Abstract:
This article investigates the relationship between industrial heritage and regional identity during deindustrialization in three Australian regions. Newcastle, in the state of New South Wales (NSW), was a coal-mining and steel-production center located north of Sydney. Wollongong, also in NSW, was a coal-mining and steel-production region centered around Port Kembla, near the town of Wollongong. The Latrobe Valley was a brown coal-mining and electricity-production center east of Melbourne. All regions display a limited profile for industrial heritage within their formal policies and representations. In Newcastle and Wollongong, the adoption of the language of the postindustrial city has limited acknowledgement of the industrial past, while the Latrobe Valley’s industrial heritage is increasingly framed by concerns over current economic challenges and climate change.

Abstract:
In Australia, bushfires are a natural part of the country’s landscape and essential for the regeneration of plant species; however, the 2019–20 bushfires were unprecedented in their extent and intensity. This paper is focused on the 2019–20 Australian bushfires and the resulting surface and column atmospheric carbon monoxide (CO) anomalies around Wollongong. Column CO data from the ground-based Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) and Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC) site in Wollongong are used together with surface in situ measurements. A systematic comparison was performed between the surface in situ and column measurements of CO to better understand whether column measurements can be used as an estimate of the surface concentrations. If so, satellite column measurements of CO could be used to estimate the exposure of humans to CO and other fire-related pollutants. We find that the enhancements in the column measurements are not always significantly evident in the corresponding surface measurements. Topographical features play a key role in determining the surface exposures from column abundance especially in a coastal city like Wollongong. The topography at Wollongong, combined with meteorological effects, potentially exacerbates differences in the column and surface. Hence, satellite column amounts are unlikely to provide an accurate reflection of exposure at the ground during major events like the 2019–2020 bushfires.

Abstract:
Throughout the 1980s, there was a trend in Australia towards increased participation rates in post-compulsory education. This study examines factors that influence Year 12 retention rates in four Government secondary schools within the Wollongong Sub-Region. Factors that were thought to influence students to continue to Year 12 and sit for the New South Wales Higher School Certificate Examination included those related to Gender, Socio-economic (relating to occupation of parents, government financial assistance, and language background), Educational and Career. The study involved surveying over 400 Year 10 students in four schools by questionnaires. These schools were chosen for their geographical location and to include two schools with a history of high retention rates and two schools with low retention rates. The questions in the survey were incorporated with a larger survey conducted in 1989 by the Faculty of Education at the University of Wollongong under the coordination of Dr. Noeline Kyle ("Everyone expects you to know; A report on careers advice and industry attitudes towards female students in non-traditional study and work in the Illawarra", 1990). The questionnaire was piloted in 1988 and after seeking recommendations from students, teachers and the NSW Department of School Education Research Group, the survey was administered in 1989. The study used descriptive research methodology, and Chi-square analysis was used to establish significance levels in the data. With regard to gender, the data clearly demonstrated that female students were more inclined than male students to stay on to Year 12, and have positive reasons for their decision. Concerning Socio-Economic factors, the results of this study showed that students whose parents have a professional background are more likely to stay on to Year 12. In addition, the achievement of the Higher School Certificate as a preIV requisite for further study was a strong motivating factor for students staying on to Year 12. However, students in receipt of Austudy did not appear to relate in a statistically significant manner with any of the factors that influence the student to stay on to Year 12. As well, no statistical inference could be drawn from intention to sit for the HSC and the language most used at home by parents. With regard to educational factors, the responses from each of the four schools surveyed showed a high percentage (82 to 85%) of students intending to stay on to Year 12 and sit for the HSC examination. None of these schools had an appreciably higher proportion of students intending to sit the HSC exam. However, it was found that students from one particular school were more likely to undertake further study and students from this school had a high percentage of both parents with a professional occupation than any other school. The findings relating to career factors showed that students who have a professional career in mind are more likely to proceed to Year 12. It was also found that students who had school work experience in a professional occupation were more likely to proceed to Year 12. The study relates the survey findings to the research literature in Australia, and also includes a discussion of the limitations of the survey.

Abstract:
In 1998, Burton Clark published his seminal work, 'Creating Entrepreneurial Universities: Organizational Pathways of Transformation' (1998) arising out of an international study of five European Universities: Warwick, Twente, Strathclyde, Chalmers and Joensuu. His study explored the significant research question 'How do universities, by means of entrepreneurial action, go about transforming themselves?' The major findings of the research gave rise to what Clark describes as pathways of transformation and in his view, 'five elements constitute an irreducible minimum'. (Clark 1998, p.5) These are defined as: • A strengthened steering core; • An expanded developmental periphery; • A diversified funding base; • A stimulated academic heartland; and • An integrated entrepreneurial culture. The key research question for this study was defined as follows: Using Clark's (1998) five pathways of transformation, is the UOW an entrepreneurial university? The research, both quantitative and qualitative, was conducted as a case study. The quantitative study involved the use of an online survey and the findings of the sample group represent the totality of staff perception. The qualitative study, using a semi-structured interview program, again focused on the UOW and the extent to which a sample of its senior executive and management staff, perceive the UOW to be an entrepreneurial university. The findings of the research, based upon the case study, supported by the views and perceptions of its staff, support the contention that the UOW is an entrepreneurial university, as characterized by Clark's (1998) five pathways of transformation. However, they also provide insights into the extent to which the UOW adheres to the five pathways of transformation, the critical nature of the leadership role of the Vice-Chancellor, and how different staff constituencies, including gender, perceive the entrepreneurial culture of the UOW.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the past ten years the emergence of studies in the area of effective schools has focused a good deal of attention on the role adopted by principals in the process of change. Few can deny the importance of this role in the development and implementation of new/changing curriculum statements. This is especially noticeable in schools that are part of a large 'centralised' system. This study is concerned with the role adopted by four principals in schools in Wollongong N.S.W. where a new syllabus in Writing K-6 was being implemented. It examined the implementation activities used and then focused specifically on the role adopted by the principal in that process.1 To enable the success or otherwise of the implementation activities to be identified, the C-BAM techniques developed by Hall, Hord et al were modified and used. The role adopted by each of the four principals was then considered in an effort to identify the contribution it made to the implementation activities. The findings suggest that the principal does play a significant role in Curriculum Implementation and that he/she needs additional skills and understandings to enable the process used to be successful. It is recommended that the C-BAM techniques would be one useful tool that principals could use.

Thesis, Malmö universitet, Institutionen för konst, kultur och kommunikation (K3), 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mau:diva-45601.

Abstract:
In spite of Australia’s border closure during the pandemic, the number of displaced people seeking refuge has continued to rise. For those lucky ones that are granted a visa to Australia, social inclusion and connectedness in the host country are crucial and closely linked to the indicators often used when measuring resettlement success. Yet refugee women particularly struggle with creating social connections. This thesis aims to investigate the role of social media in refugee women’s process of gaining social capital. In the context of this research, social capital refers to Bourdieu’s definition of the concept and is complemented with his notion of field.            To determine the role of social media for acquiring social capital, this research is based on interviews with 11 women from refugee backgrounds in Sydney and Wollongong, NSW. Six semi-structured interviews were conducted in a one-on-one setting, while five women participated in a focus group. The results from these interviews revealed various barriers to using social media for social capital and reinforced the claim that refugee women face significant challenges when forming social connections especially with those of differing social identities. The responses revealed lack of trust, together with gender socialisation and cultural differences, to be one of the more critical obstacles to utilising social media.             This research thus highlights the importance of considering the special needs and abilities of refugee women when incorporating social media in services aiming to increase their social inclusion. Where online means are deployed, further emphasis should be placed on including trusted agents to connect refugee women with the online channels. Moreover, this thesis underlines the pressing need to bridge the connection gap between refugee women and the general population in order to diminish social inequalities, which often manifest in reduced access to services, employment, wellbeing, and social exclusion.

"Perspectives on Learning and Information in Flexible Learning Environments." University of Technology, Sydney. Department of Media Arts, Communication & Information, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/2100/321.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the perspectives of teachers and learners in flexible learning environments in relation to information and learning, and the implications of these perspectives for the design of effective library and information services. It adopted a case study methodology to investigate three flexible learning academic subjects offered at the University of Wollongong in Autumn Semester (March to June) 2000. Using a contextual and document review, teacher and student questionnaires, and in-depth interviews, data were gathered on participant perspectives on the following key areas of research interest: concepts of flexible learning; the flexible learning environment; the role of the teacher; the role of the learner; methods of communication; concepts of information; methods of presenting information; using information resources and services; the role of the librarian; concepts of learning; the learning process; and the relationships between information, learning and knowledge. Interview data were analysed using the constant comparative method to identify conceptual categories and higher-level themes within individual cases as well as collectively across all three cases. The main conclusions of the study were that: (1) the ways in which information and learning are conceived are central to understanding information use as part of the learning process; (2) there are a number of identifiable processes or phases involved in using information to learn; (3) the integration of information resources and communication mechanisms is a major benefit of the online learning environment; and (4) the design of the flexible learning environment influences student approaches to learning and the use of information and learning resources. The implications of the study conclusions for library and information services include the need for librarians to develop an understanding of the relationship between information and learning; the need to encourage active engagement with information, qualitative/deep approaches to learning, and critical and interpretative thinking; the need to integrate library resources, services and communication systems into online learning environments; and the need for librarians to develop their roles as collaborative partners with teachers, as guides and facilitators of student learning, as designers of information environments, and as advocates for the incorporation of information resources and services into flexible learning environments. Suggestions for further research include ongoing studies on information conceptualisation and use within flexible learning environments, and a larger scale phenomenographic study of conceptions of information.

Taiwan has become the aging society since 1993, the proportion of older people aged 65 is increasing continuously. In the end of 2009, the aged population reached 2,457,648 people, it was 10.63% of total population, the ageing index was 65.05%, although it was lower than the developed countries such as Europe and the United States and Japan, it was still higher than other Asian countries. In 2010, CEPD also expected that the aged population would reach 14% in 2017 and become an aging society. Besides, with social change, the population of the metropolitan area is constantly growing and the problem of care for the elderly of the metropolitan area is imminent. In recent years, scholars have proposed the concept of "aging in place" and expected that senior citizens in their own circle of life can enjoy a high quality of life in old age, in May of 2005, Ministry of the Interior also started with implementation of community care stronghold, that means public sector has got down to community care for the elderly through community-based organizations, but this violated the idea of “Bottom-up” built by the community., so, community workers got down to care for the elderly in conditions of lack of resources. However, after nearly a decade of practice, each community has their own experience; this study is to confer how metropolitan area communities establish a community care model which is friendly to the elderly. Enabling senior citizens play an important role in their later years of life and obtain better quality lives are the research of this article. Therefore, this study confers community geriatric’s community involvement experience, sense of community and feelings of community involvement, and combines community workers’ actual implementation of the plight for analysis. Taking Lion Grove Community, Taoyuan County and Tatsuoka community, Taoyuan City as case studies and conducting depth interviews. In addition to selected community workers and the elderly over 65 and the elderly family members as subjects of study, non-participants are included as well. Based on the findings, community development must avoid the intrusion of politics. The community building capacity of community leaders is the key core. Acquisition and integration of resource help the community operate more smoothly and there is a better grasp of community autonomy, in addition, in response to the half live alone model of the elderly in metropolitan areas, most of the activities have to be set during the day time in order to fill the window period when family members are not at home, thus, the elderly can do emotional exchange with other participants of the elderly so as to enhance the strength of social support.
