Abstract:

Seit Mitte der 1970er Jahre hat sich für die Musik von Manfred Trojahn, Wolfgang Rihm, Reinhard Febel, Hans-Jürgen von Bose, Wolfgang von Schweinitz und Detlev Müller-Siemens die Bezeichnung "Neue Einfachheit" als typologischer und historiographischer Terminus durchgesetzt. Durch die gemeinsamen Lehrer György Ligeti und Klaus Huber entwickelten die untereinander vielfach befreundeten Komponisten eine Art Gegenschule zur Darmstädter Schule. Im engeren Sinne schulbildend wirkten sie jedoch erst seit den 1980er Jahren als Lehrer der heute dreißig- bis vierzigjährigen Komponisten. Anhand der Musik von Matthias Pintscher wird die Frage diskutiert, inwiefern es sich bei der Musik dieser jüngeren Generation um eine Reformulierung von Ansätzen ihrer Lehrer aus den 1970er Jahren handelt. Ihr Verhältnis zur Musik der Tradition, insbesondere zu Gustav Mahler, zu tonalen Formen und musiksprachlichen Gesten, zu Hans Werner Henze und Helmut Lachenmann, sowie ihre Ablehnung der seriellen und postseriellen Avantgarde legt dies nahe. Angesprochen ist auch die Musik von Rebecca Saunders, Jörg Widmann, Johannes Maria Staud und anderen. Die exemplarische Erörterung des Begriffs einer "Zweiten Neuen Einfachheit" anhand von Pintschers "Fünf Orchesterstücken" (1997) versteht sich als ein erstes Diskussionsangebot über und mit dieser jüngeren Komponistengeneration.

The world première of Jörg Widmann's new opera Babylon, conducted by Kent Nagano at the Bayerische Staatsoper, on 27 October 2012, was an evening to remember, for both the spectacular production and the musical performances. It began with a poignant announcement from the stage that Widmann had dedicated the performance in gratitude to the memory of his teacher, Hans Werner Henze, who had died that very morning in Dresden at the age of 86. One's thoughts turned to Henze's own wonderful operatic oeuvre, especially The Bassarids, which shared with Babylon an interest in ancient myth and pastiche. Yet curiously, it was a totally different postmodern influence on Widmann that seemed more evident here: that of another mentor, Wolfgang Rihm.

An den Schluss seiner ersten unter dem programmatisch-spöttischen Titel Lieblose Legenden veröffentlichten Prosa-Sammlung setzt Wolfgang Hildesheimer effektvoll Das Ende einer Welt.1 Dem eschatologischen Beiklang der Rede vom Ende wird schon im Titel lakonisch Paroli geboten: Es handelt sich nur um das Ende ,,einer“ Welt, jedoch einer, die in aller hyperbolischen Absurdität2 mit europäischer Kunst und Kultur assoziiert werden kann, deren gewaltsamer Untergang in Diktatur und Krieg den Lesern sowohl 1952 als auch nach der letzten revidierten Publikation 1962 noch deutlich vor Augen gestanden haben dürfte. Das ,,Echte und Bleibende“,3 das die Marchesa di Montetristo (eine schon namentlich gekennzeichnete melancholische Version von Alexandre Dumas’ rachedurstigem Grafen4) auf ihrer künstlichen Insel südöstlich von Murano pflegt, lässt sich als Sammelsurium alteuropäischer Kulturbeflissenheit lesen: an Personen ein Abraham-a-Santa-Clara-Forscher und ein Neo-Mystiker gleichen Namens, eine polnische Tänzerin, die als ,,Doppelbegabung“ (EW, 9) zugleich den Jugendstil erneuert, eine italienische Astrologin, die Kulturgeschichte betreibt, ein womöglich deutsch-italienischer monarchistischer Politiker, ein Schweizerischer Musikforscher (und -fälscher), ein französischer Flötenvirtuose und Nachfahre Jean-Pierre Bérangers, eine vermutlich irische Anhängerin keltischer Folklore. Der Palazzo der Marchesa gleicht äußerlich jenem venezianischen Gebäude, in dem Richard Wagner starb, in seinem Inneren sind gar ,,alle Stilepochen von der Gotik an vertreten“ (EW, 9), ein Cembalo gehörte einst Jean-Philippe Rameau, auch die konzertierende Flöte scheint von historischem Wert;5 Kleidung, Musik und die Säle, in denen sie aufgeführt wird, sind fein aufeinander abgestimmt.

Abstract In staging his Iphigenie auf Tauris, Johann Wolfgang Goethe stages reception itself. The story about a Mycenaean maiden who, exiled from her home in the South, was welcomed and sheltered by the barbarian people of the North, readily represents how the corpus of ancient Greek culture, detached from its native historical context, came to be received and curated by German artists, poets, and scholars, including, of course, by Goethe himself. If Goethe’s text is indeed understood as an allegory of reception, then subsequent readings of his Iphigenie should exhibit any number of ways in which reception itself has been formulated and assessed. The investigations here all turn on the issue of verbal aspect. By turning to key German interpretations of Goethe’s drama by Theodor Adorno, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and Hans Robert Jauss, which emerged during the socially and politically tumultuous period of 1967–73, the present study aims to give a critical account of receptive paradigms — an account based on an investigation into the varied aspects that distinguish different historical receptions of reception.

Abstract Die von Giulia Cantarutti 2001 ins Leben gerufene Reihe bezieht sich mit ihrem Namen auf den Titel eines Erzählungsbandes von Umberto Saba, Scorciatoie e racconti (1946) und sind nicht nur den Kleinen Formen gewidmet, sondern allen offenen Formen, die zu oft durch das Raster der traditionellen literarischen Genres hindurchfallen, vergessen oder unterschätzt werden. International anerkannte Expertin der deutschen und europäischen Aufklärung, vor allem Lichtenbergs, hat sie einen Gutteil ihrer wissenschaftlichen Arbeit der Aphoristik gewidmet, zu deren herausragendsten internationalen Kennern sie zu zählen ist. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes gehen auf eine Tagung in Bologna zurück, die sich einem besonderen Gebiet der aphoristischen Gattung zuwendete, der abecedarischen Literatur, die wie der Aphorismus selbst ein eher unerklärliches Schattendasein in den Literaturgeschichten führt, obwohl das Abecedarium seit dem frühen Mittelalter ein zentraler Texttyp der Sachliteratur ist. Neben heute durchaus noch bekannten Werken und Autoren gilt hier die Aufmerksamkeit vielen auch dem Literaturwissenschaftler nicht mehr unbedingt geläufigen Texten. So rückt Wolfgang Adams Praeludium Erdmann Neumeisters De Poetis Germanicis hujus seculi (1695) in den Blick, der darin einen kritischen Überblick der deutschen Barockdichtung lieferte. Jean Mondot untersucht die Aphoristik Lichtenbergs unter dem Aspekt ihres subversiven Charakters. Als Dialog mit dem heute auch Germanisten kaum mehr bekannten Schriftsteller und Satiriker Gottlieb Wilhelm Rabener stellt Giulia Cantarutti Lichtenbergs kurze satirische Wörterbücher vor: Dizionarietti satirici e aforismi nel Settecento tedesco. Giovanna Perini Folesani widmet sich den erst postum publizierten Aphorismen Johann Heinrich Füsslis. Abstract:

Every theory of superconductivity can be disproved! This tongue-in-cheek theorem struck a chord when Felix Bloch announced it in the early 1930s. Virtually every major physicist then working on theory—including Bloch, Niels Bohr, Wolfgang Pauli, Werner Heisenberg, Lev Landau, Leon Brillouin, W. Elsasser, Yakov Frenkel, and Ralph Kronig—had tried and failed to explain the mysterious phenomenon in which below a few degrees kelvin certain metals and alloys lose all their electrical resistance. The frequency with which Bloch's theorem was quoted suggests the frustration of the many physicists who were struggling to explain superconductivity.Neither the tools nor the evidence were yet adequate for solving the problem. These would gradually be created during the 1940s and 1950s, but bringing them to bear on superconductivity and solving the long-standing riddle required a special set of talents and abilities: a deep understanding of quantum mechanics and solid-state physics, confidence in the solubility of the problem, intuition about the phenomenon, a practical approach to problem-solving, patience, teamwork, and above all refusal to give up in the face of repeated failures. When John Bardeen took on the problem of superconductivity in the late 1930s, he held it like a bulldog holds a piece of meat, until he, his student J. Robert Schrieffer, and postdoctoral candidate Leon Cooper solved it in 1957.

Abstract:

The article contributes to research into the topos of furor poeticus or poetic madness and its prominence during the romantic period. In particular, it compares how the life story of the mad Italian poet from the Renaissance, Torquato Tasso, was represented in fictionalized versions across media and art forms. Romantic versions of Tasso’s life in drama (Wolfgang Goethe and B. S. Ingemann), poetry (Lord Byron), painting (Eugène Delacroix) and instrumental music (Franz Liszt) are analyzed with the aim of highlighting which aspects of Tasso’s life are portrayed, how the affordances of the medium affect the depiction and how intermedial references and transpositions are in play. In addition to intermediality theory, the transmedial narratology of Werner Wolf is introduced and employed to compare to what degree the different media and art forms can convey prototypical aspects of narrativity. Moving from the most prototypical to the least prototypical narrative genre, the article finds that the more representations of Tasso focus on his time spent in a madhouse, the more the narrative stresses experientiality at the expense of investment in plot development. The affordances of strong narrative media and strong and weak narrative-inducing media may highlight different aspects of the experientiality of furor poeticus, but in all cases the representation of Tasso is performed in an innovative romantic style.

Physiol. 83(1): 18–24, 1997.—In prior studies of perfused lungs, endotoxin priming markedly enhanced thromboxane (Tx) generation and Tx-mediated vasoconstriction in response to secondarily applied bacterial exotoxins. The present study addressed this aspect in more detail by employing precursor and intermediates of prostanoid synthesis and performing functional testing of vasoreactivity and measurement of product formation. Rabbit lungs were buffer perfused in the absence or presence of 10 ng/ml endotoxin. Repetitive intravascular bolus applications of free arachidonic acid provoked constant pulmonary arterial pressor responses and constant release reactions of TxA2 and prostaglandin (PG) I2 in nonprimed lungs. Within 60–90 min of endotoxin recirculation, which provoked progressive liberation of tumor necrosis factor-α but did not effect any hemodynamic changes by itself, both pressor responses and prostanoid release markedly increased, and both events were fully blocked by cyclooxygenase (Cyclo) inhibition with acetylsalicylic acid (ASA). The unstable intermediate PGG2 provoked moderate pressor responses, again enhanced by preceding endotoxin priming and fully suppressed by ASA. Vasoconstriction also occurred in response to the direct Cyclo product PGH2, again amplified after endotoxin pretreatment, together with markedly enhanced liberation of TxA2 and PGI2. In the presence of ASA, the priming-related increase in pressor responses and the prostanoid formation were blocked, but baseline vasoconstrictor responses corresponding to those in nonprimed lungs were maintained. Pressor responses to the stable Tx analog U-46619 were not significantly increased by endotoxin pretreatment, but some generation of TxA2 and PGI2 was also noted under these conditions.
