Abstract:
Nowadays, producers of geospatial data in either raster or vector formats are able to make them available on the World Wide Web by deploying web services that enable users to access and query on those contents even without specific software for geoprocessing. Several providers around the world have deployed instances of WMS (Web Map Service), WFS (Web Feature Service) and WCS (Web Coverage Service), all of them specified by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). In consequence, metadata about the available contents can be retrieved to be compared with similar offline datasets from other sources. This paper presents a brief summary and describes the matching process between the specifications for OGC web services (WMS, WFS and WCS) and the specifications for metadata required by the ISO 19115 - adopted as reference for several national metadata profiles, including the Brazilian one. This process focuses on retrieving metadata about the identification and data quality packages as well as indicates the directions to retrieve metadata related to other packages. Therefore, users are able to assess whether the provided contents fit to their purposes.

Abstract:
The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) is an international non-profit standards organization. Established in 1994, OGC aims to make geospatial information and services FAIR-Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. OGC specifications have greatly facilitated interoperability among software, hardware, data, and users in the GIS field. This study collected publications related to OGC specifications from the Web of Science (WoS database) between 1994 to 2020 and conducted a literature analysis using Derwent Data Analyzer and VosViewer, finding that OGC specifications have been widely applied in academic fields. The most productive organizations were Wuhan University and George Mason University; the most common keywords were interoperability, data, and web service. Since 2018, the emerging keywords that have attracted much attention from researchers were 3D city models, 3D modeling, and smart cities. To make geospatial data FAIR, the OGC specifications SWE and WMS served more for “Findable”, SWE contributed more to “Accessible”, WPS and WCS served more for “Interoperable”, and WPS, XML schemas, WFS, and WMS served more for “Reusable”. The OGC specification also serves data and web services for large-scale infrastructure such as the Digital Earth Platform of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Integrating Sensor Web With Spatial Data Infrastructures (SENSDI) aims to extend SDIs with sensor web enablement, converging geospatial and built infrastructure, and implement test cases with sensor data and SDI. It is about research to harness the sensed environment by utilizing domain specific sensor data to create a generalized sensor webframework. The challenges being semantic enablement for Spatial Data Infrastructures, and connecting the interfaces of SDI with interfaces of Sensor Web. The proposed research plan is to Identify sensor data sources, Setup an open source SDI, Match the APIs and functions between Sensor Web and SDI, and Case studies like hazard applications, urban applications etc. We take up co-operative development of SDI best practices to enable a new realm of a location enabled and semantically enriched World Wide Web - the "Geospatial Web" or "Geosemantic Web" by setting up one to one correspondence between WMS, WFS, WCS, Metadata and 'Sensor Observation Service' (SOS); 'Sensor Planning Service' (SPS); 'Sensor Alert Service' (SAS); a service that facilitates asynchronous message interchange between users and services, and between two OGC-SWE services, called the 'Web Notification Service' (WNS). Hence in conclusion, it is of importance to geospatial studies to integrate SDI with Sensor Web. The integration can be done through merging the common OGC interfaces of SDI and Sensor Web. Multi-usability studies to validate integration has to be undertaken as future research.

Abstract:
2008/2009

Abstract:
With the growth of the Internet as a global platform to share information there is also an increase in the diversity of the kinds of information shared and accessed, including geographical information. In this context there is a concern with the interoperability between systems, allowing different systems to “communicate” among themselves, sharing information and resources. This dissertation collects information about the usage of interoperability norms of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) in the Portuguese Public Administration, with a subsequent analysis and drawing of conclusions regarding this matter, taking also into account the national legal framework.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The emergency services in neighboring Jämtland, Sweden and Nord-Sør Trøndelag, Norway have identified a need to share data across department, municipality and country borders. A project is started to evaluate the possibility of sharing information through a common Web Geographic Information System (GIS). The data about resources at the various departments suffers from a high level of heterogeneity, fragmentation and protocol incompatibility. The Open Geo-Spatial Consortium (OGC) issue Web standards to harmonize the processing of geo-spatial data and promote interoperability between GIS systems. A test model based on the Thin Thread Model, emulating a potential final solution, is built to evaluate the usability of these Web standards in the situation. Successful test cases including CRUD operations and relatively smooth swapping of layer modules show that using well-established standards can be beneficial. A proposed architecture extending the test model presents the idea of a centralized proxy node and a meta data catalog. The study highlights the issue of responsibility and question of which authority should maintain centralized nodes. In order to successfully implement a Web portal, the project participants must from a technical point of view investigate how to access all desired data, agree on protocols for communication and ensure that each owner of data provides an API in agreement with the protocol. The OGC Web standards are proven a good option and focal point.

Abstract:
The enthusiasm for free and open source software has increased since the year 2000 as more open source code has become available online. Such software is interesting for both public and private sector as license expenses can be significantly reduced. Along with this development, storing data in service oriented architectures has become a more common procedure. Foran Sweden is a company that provides geographical remote sensing products. Their existing system for supplying customers with map services is based on proprietary software which leads to high license expenses. Consequently, Foran Sweden aim to migrate to a system based on free and open source software. In order to provide Foran Sweden and other comparable, with sufficient material for decision making, this work will compare a number of open source geospatial server software products with emphasis on performance. It is also important that the web services are easy to manage and administrate. Apache JMeter has been used to perform the performance tests on three widely used software products that can handle the standards of Web Map Service (WMS) and Web Feature Service (WFS). A number of common data formats with varying storage size were used to test the software products. QGIS server performed best in 10 out of 12 scenarios for WMS. In contrast QGIS was the slowest while testing WFS, and together with MapServer, they generated a high number of server errors while simulating 30 and 60 users. GeoServer was the quickest and most stable software for WFS and showed good performance in all scenarios with every dataset. The administrative interfaces of GeoServer and QGIS are both easy to learn and manage while MapServer uses a text-based interface for the management of web services, which requires more effort from the administrator.
