Abstract:
German musicology has customarily situated a paradigm shift in musical aesthetics some time during the first half of the sixteenth century. This dissertation examines the suggestion that German Reformation theology inspired a modern musical aesthetic. In Part One, the existing narrative of relationship between theological and musical thought is tested and rejected. Chapter 1 analyses twentieth-century music historians' positive expectation of commensurability between Luther's theological ideas and the sixteenth-century concepts of the musical work and musical rhetoric, concluding that their positive expectation was dependent on a Germanocentric modernity narrative. Chapter 2 assesses Listenius' Musica (1537), the textbook in which the concepts of the musical work and musica poetica were expounded for the first time. I argue that, since Listenius' textbook was intended as a pedagogical tool, it is inappropriate to read his exposition of musica poetica and opus as if logical sentences on musical aesthetics. Part Two investigates the treatment of musica in the theology of early German Reformation disputants. Chapter 3 finds that Luther's early musical thought was borrowed from the late mediæval mystics, and resisted the influence of the Renaissance Platonists. Chapter 4 shows that, far from embracing humanist ideas of musical rhetoric, Luther's Reformed musical aesthetic became increasingly anti-rational and sceptical of music's relation to verbal meaning. Chapter 5 examines the discussions of music by the German Romanist polemicists. It finds that their music-aesthetic assertions were opportunistic attempts to situate the Lutherans outside the bounds of orthodoxy. The dissertation concludes that the discussions of music in early German Reformation texts ran counter to the general sixteenth-century trajectory towards a humanistic or modern aesthetic of music. It further argues that the aesthetic proposals of sixteenth-century German theologians should be taken seriously in the formation of our present-day picture of sixteenth-century musical thought.

Abstract:
In this thesis we study the BPS spectra of Wilsonian low energy effective N = 2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills gauge theory with gauge group SU(3). We formulate a consistent picture of the moduli space of supersymmetric vacua of the theory. This entails the moduli space being partitioned by curves of marginal stability, the topology of which we describe. We list the charges of the BPS states present within each region, and how these transform under the monodromy group as they pass through branch cuts which lie between singularities in the space. We postulate the existence of cores at places where one of the two residual U(1) gauge symmetries is strongly coupled. Within these cores exist a smaller BPS spectrum. Moreover, we also study double cores where both U(1)'s are strongly coupled. We show that within these regions the theory has a finite number of BPS states, consisting of states which become massless on a nearby singularity, together with three BPS glueballs - bound states of two different massive gauge bosons - plus two other states not present in the spectrum at weak coupling.

Abstract:
We establish the existence of a symmetry within the Gromov-Witten theory of CPn and its blowup along points. The nature of this symmetry is encoded in the Cremona transform and its resolution, which lives on the toric variety of the permutohedron. This symmetry expresses some difficult to compute invariants in terms of others less difficult to compute. We focus on enumerative implications; in particular this technique yields a one line proof of the uniqueness of the rational normal curve. Our method involves a study of the toric geometry of the permutohedron, and degeneration of Gromov-Witten invariants.
En este trabajo establecemos la existencia de una simetra en el marco de la teora de Gromov-Witten para CPn y su explosion a lo largo de puntos. La naturaleza de esta simetra queda codicada en la transformacion de Cremona y su resolucion en una variedad torica del permutoedro. Esta simetra expresa algunos invariantes difciles de calcular junto con otros que no lo son tanto. Nos centramos en implicaciones enumerativas; en particular esta tecnica ofrece una prueba enuna lnea de la unicidad de la curva racional normal. Nuestro metodo involucra un estudio de la geometra torica del permutoedro, as como el de la degeneracion de los invariantes de Gromov-Witten.

Le théorème principal de cette thèse établit le lien suivant : les coefficients de genre 0 de la série de Witten-Kontsevich quantique définie par Buryak, Dubrovin, Guéré et Rossi sont égaux aux coefficients des polynômes définis par Goulden, Jackson et Vakil dans leur étude des nombres de Hurwitz doubles. Nous prouvons aussi d’autres résultats concernant la série de Witten-Kontsevich quantique. La série de Witten-Kontsevich classique est une série génératrice de nombres d’intersections sur les espaces de module des courbes. La conjecture de Witten, prouvée par Kontsevich, affirme que cette série est le logarithme d’une fonction tau de la hiérarchie de KdV. En 2016, Buryak et Rossi ont introduit une nouvelle façon de construire des hiérarchies intégrables quantiques, ils ont en particulier construit une hiérarchie de KdV quantique. Buryak, Dubrovin, Guéré et Rossi ont ensuite défini des fonctions tau quantiques, l’une d’entre elles est la série de Witten-Kontsevich quantique. Cette série dépend de deux paramètres : le paramètre de genre _ et le paramètre quantique ~. Elle se restreint à la série de Witten-Kontsevich lorsque l’on substitue ~ = 0. The main theorem of this PhD thesis states the following: the genus 0 coefficients of the quantum Witten- Kontsevich series defined by Buryak, Dubrovin, Guéré, and Rossi are equal to the coefficients of the polynomials defined by Goulden, Jackson, and Vakil in their study of double Hurwitz numbers. We also prove several other results on the quantum Witten-Kontsevich series. The classical Witten-Kontsevich series is a generating series of intersection numbers on the moduli spaces of stable curves. The Witten conjecture, proved by Kontsevich, asserts that this series is the logarithm of a tau function of the KdV hierarchy. In 2016, Buryak and Rossi introduced a new way to construct quantum integrable hierarchies, including a quantum KdV hierarchy. Buryak, Dubrovin, Guéré and Rossi then defined quantum tau functions, one of which is the quantum Witten-Kontsevich series. This series depends on two parameters: the genus parameter _ and the quantization parameter ~. It reduces to the Witten-Kontsevich series when we plug ~ = 0. One-part double Hurwitz numbers count non-equivalent holomorphic maps from a Riemann surface of genus g to P1 with a prescribed ramification profile over 0, a complete ramification over 1, and a given number of simple ramifications elsewhere. Goulden, Jackson and Vakil proved that these numbers are polynomial in the orders of ramification over 0. We show that the coefficients of these polynomials are equal to the coefficients of the quantum Witten-Kontsevich series with _ = 0. In Chapter 1, we present the setting of the classical and quantum integrable hierarchies that we will use. We also present the construction of classical and quantum tau functions. In Chapter 2, we present the moduli spaces of curves Mg;n and their tautological rings. We briefly review the Witten conjecture. Then we introduce the double ramification cycle and discuss various methods for computing it. This cycle is needed to define the Hamiltonians of quantum integrable hierarchies. In Chapter 3, we present the quantum KdV hierarchy and some of its properties. We then define the quantum Witten-Kontsevich series as a particular quantum tau function of this hierarchy. In Chapter 4, we introduce Hurwitz numbers. We first present a remarkable link between the quantum KdV hierarchy and the cut-and-join equation. Then we introduce the so-called one-part double Hurwitz numbers. Their relation with the quantum Witten-Kontsevich series is the main result ot this thesis. In Chapter 5, we present Eulerian numbers. These numbers appear in the computations of the coefficients of the quantum Witten-Kontsevich series. Their properties are crucial for our proofs. In Chapter 6, we formulate and prove our main theorem and other results on the quantum Witten- Kontsevich series

Abstract:
This thesis describes a connected component of the space of numerical stability conditions of certain CY3 triangulated categories using the period map of a meromorphic differential on a family of elliptic curves. The motivation for this result comes from studying meromorphic quadratic differentials on Riemann surfaces. On the one hand, a meromorphic quadratic differential on a Riemann surface defines a double cover, its spectral curve, together with a meromorphic abelian differential on it known as the Seiberg-Witten differential. On the other hand certain strata of meromorphic quadratic differentials determine a CY3 triangulated category such that the periods of the Seiberg-Witten differential define the central charge of a stability condition on the category. The simplest examples of this construction involve two-dimensional strata of meromorphic quadratic differentials on the Riemann sphere in which case the spectral curves are elliptic curves. There are 10 such strata in bijective correspondence with the Painlev\' equations whose families of spectral elliptic curves include the original examples of Seiberg-Witten curves and certain degenerations thereof. In these cases the periods of the Seiberg-Witten differential satisfy a hypergeometric differential equation, so that its period map is described by the Schwarz triangle theorem. In all but one of these examples this period map can be lifted to a map to a canonical connected component of the space of numerical stability conditions of the associated category.

It is well known that very few models of interacting systems particularly those in dimension higher than two, can be solved exactly. The mean-field treatment is the first step in approximate calculations for such models. Although mean-field approximation leads to sufficiently accurate results of the thermodynamic properties of these systems away from critical points, most often it fails miserably close to the critical points. In this thesis, we propose to study direct methods (not based on any mean-field type approximations) for proving the exponential decay of the two point-correlation functions and the analyticity of the pressure (free energy per unit volume) for models of Kac type. The methods are based on the Helffer-Sjöstrand formula for the covariance in terms of Witten's Laplacians.

Die Frage nach dem Verstäandnis der Topologie symplektischer Mannigfaltigkeiten erhielt immer größere Aufmerksamkeit, insbesondere seit den Arbeiten von A. Weinstein und V. Arnold. Ein bewährtes Mittel ist dabei die Theorie der Gromov-Witten-Invarianten. Eine Gromov-Witten-Invariante zählt Schnitte von rationalen Zyklen mit Modulräumen J-holomorpher Kurven, die eine fixierte Homologieklasse repräsentieren, für eine zahme fast komplexe Struktur. Allerdings ist es im Allgemeinen schwierig, solche Schnittzahlen zu definieren, ohne zusätzliche Annahmen an die symplektische Mannigfaltigkeit zu treffen, da mehrfach überlagerte J-holomorphe Kurven mit negativer Chernzahl vorkommen können. Die vorliegende Dissertation folgt einem alternativen Ansatz zur Definition von Gromov-Witten-Invarianten, der von K. Cieliebak und K. Mohnke eingeführt wurde. Dieser Ansatz liefert für jede fixierte Homologieklasse einen Pseudozykel für jede geschlossene glatte Mannigfaltigkeit mit einer rationalen symplektischen Form. Wir erweitern diesen Ansatz in der vorliegenden Arbeit für eine beliebige symplektische Form. Wie bereits in der ursprünglichen Arbeit betrachten wir nur den Fall holomorpher Sphären. Wir zeigen, dass für jede Klasse der zweiten Koholomogie eine offene Umgebung existiert, so dass für zwei beliebige rationale symplektische Formen, desser Klassen in der gewählten Umgebung liegen, die dazugehörigen Pseudozykel rational kobordant sind. Der Beweis basiert auf einer Modifikation der Argumente des Ansatzes von Cieliebak und Mohnke für den Fall von zwei sich transversal schneidenden Hyperflächen, die jeweils zu verschiedenen symplektischen Formen gehören.
The question of understanding the topology of symplectic manifolds has received great attention since the work of A. Weinstein and V. Arnold. One of the established tools is the theory of Gromov-Witten invariants. A Gromov-Witten invariant counts intersections of rational cycles with the moduli space of J-holomorphic curves representing a fixed class for a tame almost complex structure. However, without imposing additional assumptions on the symplectic manifold such counts are difficult to define in general due to the occurence of multiply covered J-holomorphic curves with negative Chern numbers. This thesis deals with an alternative approach to Gromov-Witten invariants introduced by K. Cieliebak and K. Mohnke. Their approach delivers a pseudocycle for any closed symplectic manfold equipped with a rational symplectic form. Here this approach is extended to the case of an arbitrary symplectic form on a closed symplectic manifold.As in the original work we consider only the case of holomorphic spheres. We show that for any second cohomology class there exists an open neighbourhood, such that for any two rational symplectic forms, whose cohomolgy classes are contained in this neighbourhood, the corresponding pseudocycles are rationally cobordant. The proof is based on an adaptation of the arguments from the original Cieliebak-Mohnke approach to a more general situation - presence of two transversely intersecting hypersurfaces coming from two different symplectic forms.

A discrete analogue of the Witten Laplacian on the n-dimensional integer lattice is considered. After rescaling of the operator and the lattice size we analyze the tunnel effect between different wells, providing sharp asymptotics of the low-lying spectrum. Our proof, inspired by work of B. Helffer, M. Klein and F. Nier in continuous setting, is based on the construction of a discrete Witten complex and a semiclassical analysis of the corresponding discrete Witten Laplacian on 1-forms. The result can be reformulated in terms of metastable Markov processes on the lattice.
In dieser Arbeit wird auf dem n-dimensionalen Gitter der ganzen Zahlen ein Analogon des Witten-Laplace-Operatoren eingeführt. Nach geeigneter Skalierung des Gitters und des Operatoren analysieren wir den Tunneleffekt zwischen verschiedenen Potentialtöpfen und erhalten vollständige Aymptotiken für das tiefliegende Spektrum. Der Beweis (nach Methoden, die von B. Helffer, M. Klein und F. Nier im Falle des kontinuierlichen Witten-Laplace-Operatoren entwickelt wurden) basiert auf der Konstruktion eines diskreten Witten-Komplexes und der Analyse des zugehörigen Witten-Laplace-Operatoren auf 1-Formen. Abstract:
The construction of manifold structures and fundamental classes on the (compactifed) moduli spaces appearing in Gromov-Witten theory is a long-standing problem. Up until recently, most successful approaches involved the imposition of topological constraints like semi-positivity on the underlying symplectic manifold to deal with this situation. One conceptually very appealing approach that removed most of these restrictions is the approach by K. Cieliebak and K. Mohnke via complex hypersurfaces, [CM07]. In contrast to other approaches using abstract perturbation theory, it has the advantage that the objects to be studied still are spaces of holomorphic maps defined on Riemann surfaces. In this thesis this approach is generalised from the case of surfaces of genus 0 dealt with in [CM07] to the general case. In the first section the spaces of Riemann surfaces are introduced, that take the place of the Deligne-Mumford spaces in order to deal with the fact that the latter are orbifolds. Also, for use in the later parts, the interrelations of these for different numbers of marked points are clarified. After a preparatory section on Sobolev spaces of sections in a fibration, the results presented there are then used, after a short exposition on Hamiltonian perturbations and the associated moduli spaces of perturbed curves, to construct a decomposition of the universal moduli space into smooth Banach manifolds. The focus there lies mainly on the global aspects of the construction, since the local picture, i.e. the actual transversality of the universal Cauchy-Riemann operator to the zero section, is well understood. Then the compactification of this moduli space in the presence of bubbling is presented and the later construction is motivated and a rough sketch of the basic idea behind it is given. In the last part of the first chapter, the necessary definitions and results are given that are needed to transfer the results on moduli spaces of curves with tangency conditions from [CM07]. There also the necessary restrictions on the almost complex structures and Hamiltonian perturbations from [IP03] are incorporated, that later allow the use of the compactness theorem proved in that reference. In the last part of this thesis, these results are then used to give a definition of a Gromov-Witten pseudocycle, using an adapted version of the moduli spaces of curves with additional marked points that are mapped to a complex hypersurface from [CM07]. Then a proof that this is well-defined is given, using the compactness theorem from [IP03] to get a description of the boundary and the constructions from the previous parts to cover the boundary by manifolds of the correct dimensions.
