Kennedy, Melissa. ""Striding both worlds" : cross-cultural influence in the work of Witi Ihimaera." Thesis, University of Canterbury. English, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/3931.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis engages with aspects of Witi Ihimaera's oeuvre that demonstrate influences from cultures other than Maori. These may be overt in the fiction, such as plot settings in Venice, Vietnam and Canada, or implicit in his writing mode and style, influenced by English romanticism, Pakeha cultural nationalism, Katherine Mansfield's modernist epiphanies, and Italian verismo opera. In revealing Ihimaera's indebtedness to cultural and aesthetic influences commonly seen as irrelevant to contemporary Maori literature, this thesis reveals a depth and richness in Ihimaera's imaginary that is frequently overlooked and undervalued in New Zealand literary interpretation. Illuminating cross-cultural influence in Ihimaera's works calls into question the applicability of biculturalism as a comprehensive manner of accounting for both Maori cultural ambitions of self-determination and the Maori relationship with Pakeha on the national level. Far from an "us-versus-them" dialectic based on a separatist notion of two individually self-sufficient and complete cultures, Ihimaera's fiction shows Maori culture to have been shaped by a long history of interaction and influence with the colonial British and the Pakeha. This is manifest in the way that the Maori sovereignty and renaissance movements, which gathered force in the 1970s, have been inspired by European concepts of modernity, the structures of nation building and, more recently, by Western globalization described in the theories of transculturation and diaspora. Similarly, in New Zealand literature, Maori writing is commonly considered a parallel genre which describes a distinctive Maori worldview and literary style. Contrary to the familiar interpretation of Ihimaera's fiction from this standpoint, this thesis argues that an emphasis on difference tends to lose sight of fiction's capacity to bring into play issues of differentiation, originality and hybridity through its very form and function. In effect, Maori negotiation of its sovereign space in its literature takes place in its forms rather than in its storyline, for example in multiple linguistic significations, in the text's unstable relationship with reality, and the way that imagery escapes concrete, definitive explanation. In this optic, this thesis analyses little-discussed aspects of Ihimaera's fiction, including his love of opera, the extravagance of his baroque lyricism, his exploration of the science-fiction genre, and his increasing interest in taking Maori into the international arena. While reading against the grain of current New Zealand literary practice, this thesis does not intend to contest such reading. Rather, it endeavours to present an additional, complementary analytical framework, based on a conviction that contemporary Maori-Pakeha cultural and literary negotiation and contestation is far from unique, but a local manifestation of other international and historical efforts for recognition and respect.

Abstract:
In many former British colonies independence from colonial rule has produced a myriad of post-colonial tensions. Increasingly, writers from the indigenous race in these former colonies have felt moved to respond to these tensions in their imaginative fiction. This study has undertaken a comparative cross-cultural analysis of the works of two writers from such societies whose indigenous cultures share common assumptions, to explore the underlying impetus of these tensions, and the writers proposals for resolving them. Chapter One assesses Witi Ihimaera as a writer, and explores his concept of biculturalism, with particular emphasis on the distinctly Maori point of view which informs his analysis of contemporary social problems. Chapter Two assays Ihimaeras pastoral writings, Pounamu Pounamu, Tangi, and Whanau, tracing in them the development of his concept of biculturalism, and also the changes in Ihimaeras writing that culminated in The new Net Goes Fishing, with the hardening of attitude that it expresses. Chapter Three looks at the revisionism of Ihimaeras view of New Zealand history from a Maori viewpoint. It uses Ihimaeras The Matriarch not only as a means of exploring this revisionist Maori perspective, but also as evidence of the radicalisation of Ihimaeras views, and the broadening of the concept of biculturalism to embrace not only cultural, but social and political matters. Chapter Four considers Ihimaeras The Whale Rider as a feminist restatement of earlier views and highlights the growing dilemma he faces concerning the concept of biculturalism. Chapter Five focuses on Achebe, the writer, and his view of the role of the African writer in contemporary society. It argues that Achebe views himself as a seer, a visionary writer who has the answer that could regenerate his society. Chapter Six analyses Achebes Things Fall Apart and Arrow of God, and argues that contrary to accepted views of Okonkwo, this character is not actually representative of his society but a deviant. It further argues that the post-colonial African societies affictions with irresponsible leaders were already manifest in the colonial period, through characters such as Okonkwo and Ezeulu, whom Achebe sees as guilty of gross abuses of power and privilege. Chapter Seven looks at both No Longer at Ease and A Man of the People, and argues that the failure of the first indigenous administrative class stems both from their having an incomplete apprehension of all the aspects of their heritage and the responsibility which power imposes on those who exercise it, and also from lack of restraint in wielding of power. It further argues that the unbridled scramble for materialism has resulted in the destruction of democratic principles. In the context of contemporary New Zealand society, Ihimaera sees the solution for Maori post-colonial tensions as bicultural integration, but he is having problems with the concept in the face of increasing radical activism from Maoris who see it as little better than assimilation. Achebe, however, has opted for re-formism, having discarded traditionalism because it is inadequate for people in the modern world.

Abstract:
Chapter five contains my conclusions of the connections I find. In addition, I use examples from Witi Ihimaera's fictional novel The Uncles Story, as well as many other of his plays and novels, to show examples of influences from Maori culture, Mormonism, and his homosexuality on Ihimaera's work.; Recent artists like Norwegian Recycling and E-603 have created a new genre of art within music: digital recycling. These artists take many different well-known and less-known lyrics, music, and spoken word and combine them together. This meshing of multiple pieces of art has new historical roots. The different images, auditory and visual, that these creations produce and often enhance meaning and connections through popular media. These connections interest me most. Through the lenses of post-colonial, gender, and queer theories, I examine Witi Ihimaera's creative work. I splice in different theorists' words, my own thoughts, and images to enhance and accent Ihimaera's "Singing Word" (Juniper Ellis 170). According to Ihimaera, the written word and the "novel is alien to the indigenous form, and that where Maori are going now is probably where it's most natural, and that is into theatre or into poetry...and oral storytelling" (Ihimaera 170). As the first published playwright in New Zealand and as an English professor at the University of Auckland, Witi Ihimaera is a role model and leader to many other Maori and New Zealand playwrights and writers. I am most interested in understanding what and how he has been influenced as an artist. I craft a document that extends the idea of a written word in a Maori context, in which I explore the major influences on Ihimaera as a theatrical creator and influencer of other Maori artists. Chapter one introduces Witi Ihimaera and my methods. Chapter two includes my research on the Maori culture with the following subsections: the people, their traditions, and their paternal systems of power. Chapter three is my research on the influx of Pakeha authority highlighting the Mormon take over and how that affected author and playwright Witi Ihimaera. Chapter four is my research on how Ihimaera's homosexuality has influenced his creations and the contemporary Maori Performance.

Abstract:
Traditional approaches to knowledge collaboration and sharing have proven to be limited in the sense of addressing organizational needs of dynamic and distributed knowledge. More recently, the emergence of social media and the second generation of web technologies have introduced new ways and possibilities for sharing knowledge in organizations. In particular, the wiki technology, as one type of social media, is argued to mark a shift in the way people collaborate and share knowledge with each other on the web. It represents a new, open style of knowledge collaboration and sharing which allows anyone to freely and openly create and shape knowledge. In this respect, organizations have been attracted by this new dynamic approach which is based on open collaboration and flexible participation. More organizations are using wikis in order to effectively leverage distributed knowledge and improve their competitive edge. Against this backdrop, this research is concerned with examining how such organizations use social media, the wiki technology in particular, for sharing knowledge among individuals and groups. The aim is twofold: to develop an understanding of the ways by which these individuals and groups exchange and share knowledge with each other and to identify different factors that influence knowledge collaboration and sharing using a wiki in an organizational setting. The research is based on three published research papers which provide both theoretical and empirical accounts of knowledge collaboration and sharing using wikis. To these ends of this research, an interpretive case study was used as an empirical research method with interviews as primary sources of data. Several other data sources have been triangulated during the empirical inquiry including field visits, observations, and documents. The case took place at a large multinational organization that used a wiki as a collaborative platform to support knowledge sharing among members of several professional communities of practice. Eventually, the outcome of the research is a thorough understanding that describes knowledge collaboration and sharing using a wiki as a dynamic social process involving recursive and dynamic social interactions among members of communities of practice through which knowledge is collaboratively constructed and reconstructed and thus shared. It also presents a dual impact of wiki openness on knowledge collaboration and sharing within organizations.

Abstract:
In recent years, WiFi has a very rapid growth due to its high throughput, high efficiency, and low costs. Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) and Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) are two key technologies for providing high throughput and efficiency for WiFi systems. MIMO-OFDM provides Channel State Information (CSI) which represents the amplitude attenuation and phase shift of each transmit-receiver antenna pair of each carrier frequency. CSI helps WiFi achieve high throughput to meet the growing demands of wireless data traffic. CSI captures how wireless signals travel through the surrounding environment, so it can also be used for wireless sensing purposes. This dissertation presents how to improve WiFi sensing and networking with CSI. More specifically, this dissertation proposes deep learning models to improve the performance and capability of WiFi sensing and presents network protocols to reduce CSI feedback overhead for high efficiency WiFi networking. For WiFi sensing, there are many wireless sensing applications using CSI as the input in recent years. To get a better understanding of existing WiFi sensing technologies and future WiFi sensing trends, this dissertation presents a survey of signal processing techniques, algorithms, applications, performance results, challenges, and future trends of CSI-based WiFi sensing. CSI is widely used for gesture recognition and sign language recognition. Existing methods for WiFi-based sign language recognition have low accuracy and high costs when there are more than 200 sign gestures. The dissertation presents SignFi for sign language recognition using CSI and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). SignFi provides high accuracy and low costs for run-time testing for 276 sign gestures in the lab and home environments. For WiFi networking, although CSI provides high throughput for WiFi networks, it also introduces high overhead. WiFi transmitters need CSI feedback for transmit beamforming and rate adaptation. The size of CSI packets is very large and it grows very fast with respect to the number of antennas and channel width. CSI feedback introduces high overhead which reduces the performance and efficiency of WiFi systems, especially mobile and hand-held WiFi devices. This dissertation presents RoFi to reduce CSI feedback overhead based on the mobility status of WiFi receivers. CSI feedback compression reduces overhead, but WiFi receivers still need to send CSI feedback to the WiFi transmitter. The dissertation presents EliMO for eliminating CSI feedback without sacrificing beamforming gains.

Abstract:
The history of 'the blind' has been one of degradation and oppression. Even in these times of so-called 'enlightenment', when there is a move towards the concept of 'integration', people with this type of impairment often find themselves on the margins of society, both vocationally and relationally. The interpretations of impairment applied by professionals, and by those with impairments themselves, frequently draw from models which are essentially inadequate as a means of evaluating experience and initiating change. Conflicts arises, therefore, as attempts are made to clarify the tension between 'impairment', for emphasis upon the one fails to encompass a realistic understanding of the other. The person facing the onset of impairment, therefore, is confronted with a situation which is essentially threatening with regard to every aspect of life. Loss and change are fundamental to human experience. The commonly understood elements of 'grief work' present as a useful framework for evaluating the potential crisis of sight loss. Sight loss is described as a major life crisis, which ultimately challenges the individual's perception of himself in terms of personhood. Although many become 'integrated', a more adequate means of working towards full 'inclusion' needs to be found. The church as The Body of Christ should offer a context wherein those with impairments find acceptance and fulfilment. Nevertheless, categorisation and abusive practises have infiltrated life and worship. People with impairments often find themselves alienated by the same reductionist attitudes which characterise broader society. Such negation emerges from a misunderstanding of scripture, with regard in particular to issues of suffering and healing, and as to what in fact constitutes 'wholeness'. The work of Christ stands as evidence of his participation in, and identification with, people with impairments. Thus, he is a "disabled God" carrying the marks of stigma in his resurrected body. The Body of Christ needs to work towards a model of inclusion emergent from a renewed understanding of God's acceptance of those who are "different" as his unique creation.

Thompson, Kirsty M. "THE CULTURAL WORLD OF PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE WITH FAMILIES OF CHILDREN WITH A DISABILITY: A NEW UNDERSTANDING OF FAMILY-CENTRED PRACTICE." University of Sydney, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/2097.

Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy
Human service professionals provide a range of services to support the health and development of children with a disability and to assist their families. Over the past two decades, family-centred approaches have become widely acclaimed as a means of providing quality services. To date, research has focused predominately on identifying or measuring discrete elements of professionals’ practice with families, such as parent–professional partnerships, family-centred practice and family empowerment, often neglecting to consider the broader practice context. What is missing is an empirical and contextually grounded understanding of how professionals interpret and enact the multiple concepts informing practice. This study addresses this gap by exploring how professionals think, feel and act when working with families and by examining more broadly, the multi-dimensional and contextual concept of ‘professional practice’. In this study, professional practice with families is conceptualised as a cultural activity. The study sought to identify and describe the culture of professional practice with families and how this culture is instantiated in daily work practice. The theoretical framework underpinning this study comes from Jerome Bruner’s cultural psychology, and specifically his writings on situated action, culture and narrative. Accordingly, narrative was considered a means to identify, describe and understand the daily work practices of professionals ‘situated’ in their cultural setting and their own intentions when working with families. One hundred and sixty three stories about professional practice were collected in focus groups and individual interviews with human service professionals in New South Wales, Australia. These narratives were analysed deductively to identify the culture of professional practice. This culture comprised of ten components reflecting professionals’ understanding of the culturally acceptable ways of working with families. The cultural components reflected principles underlying family-centred practices as well as traditional medically framed and emerging business-like principles associated with managerialism and economic rationalism. Narrative analysis was employed to inductively develop four cultural core narratives grounded V in participants’ stories: Making it work, having to fight, hopeless struggle and making the best of it. Professionals potentially have all of these narratives available to them to explain their actions in each practice situation. The results of this study provide a description and analysis of the cultural world of professional practice with families. For family-centred approaches to become a reality, these findings emphasise the critical importance of education, policy and staff development for professionals working with families that addresses the broader practice context. Suggestions are made regarding further exploration of the crosscultural validity and the application and implications of these narratives for professionals and families. By exposing the culture of professional practice and the four cultural narratives, this study challenges professionals, managers, academics and policymakers alike to critically examine the practice culture and their contribution to creating and sustaining it.

Abstract:
Following the continuous increase of the mobile data traffic, the 5G technology has been introduced to offer additional capacity and higher data rate. WiFi APs integration with mobile networks are considered as potential candidate towards the heterogenous networks. We first propose in this thesis an algorithm for the estimation of the WiFi physical channels load through the observation of the non-overlapped channels and estimating as a result the load of the entire physical channels. Then, in our second proposed algorithm, we propose to dimension the WiFi network to offload LTE network and transfer the users that consume the high level of transmission power. The algorithm calculates the minimum needed number of APs that will support the extra offloaded LTE traffic. Finally, we evaluate the benefit of the cooperation by estimating the profit share of LTE and WiFi. We calculate for each player the profit using a coalition game concept based on Shapley value

Abstract:
The focus of this research is an exploration of the use of collaborative intersectoral approaches to service delivery as a means of improving responsiveness to the complex needs and issues presented by vulnerable adolescents and young people. There are three central domains and contexts that inform this research:- young people with complex needs- their problematic history of access to, and engagement with a particular cohort of service systems and- the common issues that arise when these service systems interact. The central research question that this thesis has explored is:- What are the principles and guidelines that will inform services operating within an integrated collaborative approach for children, adolescents and young people with complex needs? A multi method design informed by an interpretative research paradigm utilising qualitative research methods was used which consisted of:(i) An analysis of key policy directions within Australia, United Kingdom and United States relating to young people with complex needs.(ii) An analysis was undertaken of current local, national and international literature that relates to policy, program and practice for children, adolescents and young people with complex needs.(iii) In-depth interviews conducted with five stakeholder groups involved with an inter-sectoral service initiative consisting of cross-sector care teams providing a therapeutic service to young people living in residential units.
