Fox, Alistair. A Māori Boy Contests the Old Patriarchal Order: Mahana (Lee Tamahori, 2016). Edinburgh University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474429443.003.0016.

Abstract:
Based on a comparison with Witi Ihimaera’s novel Bulibasha, King of the Gypsies (1994), the source for the adaptation, this chapter discusses Lee Tamahori’s Mahana as further evidence of two tendencies apparent in coming-of-age films on Māori subjects: an increasing inclination to reconfigure indigenous stories through a process of generic standardization, especially involving genres characteristic of Hollywood, and a willingness to contest, with a view to reforming, certain attitudes and practices of traditional Māori culture –in particular, the patriarchal assumptions of male elders in the whānau, or extended family group.

Abstract:
Through a comparison with the film’s source, Witi Ihimaera’s novel The Whale Rider (1987), this chapter explores why many Māori found the film culturally offensive on account of the way that its Pākehā director, Niki Caro, imposed a euro-centric feminist ideology on the story in the process of adaptation that was at odds with the kaupapa Māori approach taken by Ihimaera in the original. The film is discussed as illustrating a trend whereby national coming-of-age stories would increasingly be subjected to a conventionalized generic treatment in order to reach a prospective international audience sought by funding bodies.

Moffat, Kirstine. The Novel in English in Australasia to 1950. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199609932.003.0010.

Abstract:
This chapter examines English-language novels in Australasia. The history of the pre-1950 novel in Australasia is a history of two distinct emerging literary experiences: the Australian novel and the New Zealand novel. Interrogating the divergences and convergences between the pre-1950 novels of these nations, the chapter concentrates on five broadly chronological and overlapping literary themes: encounters; settlement; social, moral and political agendas; cultural nationalism; interior lives. It is important to note that the Australian and New Zealand novelists writing before 1950 were all of European heritage: the first Aboriginal novel, Mudrooroo's Wild Cat Falling, was not published until 1965, with Witi Ihimaera's collection of stories Pounamu Pounamu following in 1972 and his novel Tangi, the first by a Māori writer, in 1973.
