Abstract:
Master thesis in Business Administration, Swedish Business School at Örebro University, spring semester 2012 Authors: Anders Oskarsson & Christian Uhlander Title: I’m going to make you rich! -With a little help from Piotroski Research objective: This paper examines whether a simple account-based analysis strategy, F_SCORE, can improve returns earned by an investor. The results show that F_SCORE generated a 69,7 % annual return between 2001-2010 at the Swedish market, which was better than the further developed model A_SCORE. Overall, the evidence suggests that the market does not incorporate historical information into prices in a timely manner. Methodology: The foundation for this thesis is based on a quantitative approach and empirical material is gathered from Thomson Reuters Datastream for the Swedish market.

Abstract:
After school, Kenyan graduates struggle in a labour market that does not offer enough employment opportunities. Some graduates search for years, get disillusioned, and give up ever finding formal employment. Some find jobs, but not necessarily in the field of their profession, and possibly below their qualification. Kenya invests in and accumulates human capital that is untapped or even lost. One way to improve one’s job search is the use of personal social networks. By applying social network and social distance theories, this study explores the conditions under which networks can become helpful to a jobseeker. Personal experiences of young Kenyan graduates were used to find out about their job search strategies and their social networks. Insights from recruiters’ perspectives about recruitment processes offered a wholesome view on how jobseekers get connected to jobs. The main data sources were online interviews and an online survey. The findings suggest that a network’s willingness to help might depend on level of reciprocity, that many jobseekers do not have access to helpful networks, and that the ability of a network to help might be restricted due to level of influence or applicability. The study concludes that a combination of various job search strategies offers the best chances to connect a jobseeker to a job, but also that companies need to adapt their recruitment processes in include people who are less connected.

Abstract:
A major challenge in medical genetics is to identify the mutations underlying heritable diseases. Dogs are excellent genetic models in the search for causative mutations, as they constitute a large library of naturally occurring heritable diseases many of which are analogous to those suffered by man. In addition, these animals have a genome structure well suited to gene mapping. The Shar-Pei dog has two breed-specific features; a strongly selected for wrinkled skin and a high predisposition to an autoinflammatory disease (AID). Abnormalities in the innate immune system cause this type of disease, presenting as spontaneous attacks of inflammation. Persistent inflammation puts an affected Shar-Pei at risk of amyloidosis, organ failure and premature death. In humans, similar AIDs occur and for a majority of cases, no underlying genetic cause has yet been identified. The aim of this thesis was to use the Shar-Pei as a genetic model for autoinflammation in order to find new genes and signalling pathways involved in disease. In paper I, a pleiotropic mutation was identified that could explain both the wrinkled skin and autoinflammation in Shar-Pei. The mutation is associated with an up-regulation of Hyaluronic Acid Synthase 2 (HAS2). Increased expression of HAS2 leads to abnormal depositions of hyaluronic acid (HA) in the skin, resulting in the wrinkled appearance. When fragmented, HA also function as a damage signal sensed by the innate immune system which then responds with inflammation. By selecting for the wrinkled skin, the autoinflammatory disease has inadvertently been enriched in the breed. In paper II, five different inflammatory signs could be associated with the same genetic risk factor, allowing the introduction of a new terminology: Shar-Pei autoinflammatory disease (SPAID) to describe the whole disease complex. In addition, a modifying locus containing several biologically attractive genes was suggested to contribute to varying incidence of amyloidosis in Shar-Pei. In paper III, signs of pathological changes in HA metabolism were investigated in human AID. HA concentration was found to be both higher in subjects with no molecular diagnosis and also associated to disease activity and severity. Taken together, this suggests HA is also involved in human AID.

Abraham, Martin. "With a little help from my spouse: the role of trust in family business." Universitätsbibliothek Leipzig, 2016. http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bsz:15-qucosa-208201.

Full text
Abstract:
Empirically, self-employed persons often operate with the support of their partners or other household members as co-workers in the firm. The formal or informal employment of the marriage partner in particular seems to have a lot of advantages, such as fiscal benefits and low wage costs. But from a theoretical point of view, these advantages are jeopardized by serious cooperation problems: If the spouse of the self-employed decides to work in the jointly-run business, former qualifications are lost. Hence a one-sided dependence on the part of the co-working spouse arises, which increases with the amount of relation-specific investments. Hence the actors are confronted with a cooperation problem, because the decision for co-working requires trust concerning the future action of the self-employed. Within this framework, this paper is focused on the determinants which influence the decisions concerning collaborating in the business of a self employed life’s companion as well as the extent of labor provided in the case of co-working. It can be assumed that the three types of determinants investigated in this paper affect the assignment of a spouse or cohabitation partner in the business of a self-employment person: (1) economic determinants which are individual productivity and human capital of the life’s companion, (2) the situation of the family and the household, and (3) characteristics of the entrepreneur and the firm. Based on a sample of self-employed empirical analysis indicates that trust and specialization play a crucial role in explaining co-working of the life’s companions of self-employed persons. However, economic determinants like productivity and human capital do not show the expected effects on collaboration.

Abstract:

This study examines the European Unions (EU) promoting of regional cooperation, included in its programme, the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP). The thesis is based upon the agreed activities in the EU/Ukraine relation concerning regional cooperation.

The aim for this thesis is to visualise the policy outcome of the ENP concerning the EU/Ukraine relation and regional cooperation. The following questions are posed: What are the goals for the EU; what are the achievements and planned actions and what instruments are used by the EU in the ENP concerning the EU/Ukraine relation and regional cooperation?

The theoretical approach assumes that the Union is a power in international relations. It’s well suited promoting its policies in an asymmetric power environment, where the EU is the supremacy.

This study is conducted with a qualitative research method, based on text analysis on the European Unions official documents.

The result shows that the goals for the Union are the protection of its prosperity and its energy supply. Ukraine shall assist the EU, reaching these goals. In exchange, is the EU promising integration to the Unions internal market for Ukraine. But the EU has problems when this contravenes to Russia’s interests. This confirms the theory.

Abstract:
Grounded on the principles of Interactional Sociolinguistics and etnometodological Conversation Analysis this research examines the issue of repair among three copartipants in which an interactant other than the trouble-source turn speaker responds to repair initiation. Its research corpus is formed by ten hours and thirty minutes of video recordings of interactions captured from the months of april to may of 2005 in the setting of a language institute in Porto Alegre. Five excerpts of the repair type under investigation were selected in which various sequencial structures and interactional actions could be analysed. The generated data provide evidence that there are two structural sequences other than the one reported by Egbert´s (1997) classical account of the issue. It could be concluded that there is no exclusive interactional pattern in the actions employed by coparticipants regarding acceptance or inappropriateness to the responses of speakers other than the trouble source turn ones. It is suggested that this variation regards both moments in which there was evidence of conversational talk and instances of institucional talk in the language classroom. The range of participants' alignment proved to be prone to change, once it could be observed that interactants grouped up not only as dyads but also as individuals. The arrangement variation highlighted the extend to which interaction takes place on a situational basis. It could also be suggested that participants employ this kind of repair mechanism in the foreign language classroom for purposes other than exclusively that of restoring balance to their unsufficient command of the interactional language, but to accomplish other social actions which characterize an interactional scenery as we know it.

Lewis, Richard. "Every little helps : an investigation of frequency biases in comparative judgments." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2010. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/3916/.

Full text
Abstract:
Intuitive statistical inferential judgments involve the estimation of statistical properties of samples of information, such as the mean or variance. Prior research has shown that human judges are generally good at making unbiased estimates of sample properties. However, a series of recent applied consumer research experiments demonstrated a systematic bias in comparative judgments of item distributions in which the individual items are paired across those distributions, for example comparing the prices in two stores selling the same items. When the two distributions have the same mean, the distribution with the higher number of items that are smaller in magnitude than the equivalent item in the other distribution is typically judged to be the smaller of the two distributions: a frequency bias. In a series of experiments, the research in this thesis provides a robust demonstration of the frequency bias and explores possible explanations for the bias. A comparison between simultaneous and sequential presentation of information demonstrates that the frequency bias cannot solely be explained by the salience of the frequency cue. A novel web-based experiment, in which information was sampled incidentally from the environment and a naturalistic task was used to elicit comparative judgments, showed that the frequency effect persists in an ecologically-valid context. A systematic comparison between alternative cognitive models of the judgment process supports an explanation in which items are recalled from memory and compared in a pair-wise fashion, meaning the frequency bias may be found in a wide range of other judgment tasks and domains, which would have significant implications for our understanding of intuitive comparative judgments.

Abstract:
Introduction: Depression can be a very debilitating condition and can take a persistent course. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBI) have shown benefits for reducing risk of relapse and current depression. However, despite a strong body of evidence, there are currently few studies that have investigated the relative efficacy of MBI compared with an active control intervention. Moreover, little is known about purported mechanisms of action in MBI. The present study aimed to examine the effects of a brief mindfulness intervention as compared to a relaxation intervention in a sample of depressed patients. In addition, the study aimed to investigate which psychological variables contribute to changes in symptoms and mood. Method: Forty depressed patients (DPs) were recruited from the waiting list of IAPT services. Twenty participants were randomly allocated to a mindfulness intervention and 20 to a relaxation intervention. Participants (n= 40) attended two face-to-face assessments one week apart (active treatment phase), and had a follow-up one week later (n= 37) (follow-up phase). Participants were taught the intervention (mindfulness or relaxation) in the first assessment and were asked to practise it daily over the following week. Depressive symptoms, cognitive functioning, and emotion regulation were assessed at pre, post-intervention and follow-up. Results: From pre to post-intervention, self-reported symptoms of depression significantly decreased, cognitive functioning and emotion regulation significantly increased, changes were maintained at follow-up, but no differences between the two groups were found. Decentering and mindfulness were significant predictors of changes in depressive symptoms during the active and follow-up phases of treatment, respectively. Discussion: Both mindfulness and relaxation interventions reduced depression and enhanced cognitive functioning, which points to common elements between the two interventions. Decentering and mindfulness were common predictors of change. The findings have clear clinical implications, but also raise challenges regarding selecting a suitable active comparison treatment for mindfulness research.

Abstract:
After the students in high school have learned to integrate a function, the calculation of the volume of a solid of revolution, like a rotated parabola, is taken as a good applied example. The next step is to calculate the volume of an object of reality which is interpreted as a solid of revolution of a given function f(x). The students do all these calculations in the same way and get the same result. Consequently the teachers can easily decide if a result is right or wrong. If the students have learned to work with a graphical or CAS calculator, they can calculate the volume of solids of revolution in reality by modelling a possible fitted function f(x). Every student has to decide which points of the curve that generates the solid of revolution can be taken and which function will suitably fit the curve. In Austrian high schools teachers use GeoGebra as a software which allows you to insert photographs or scanned material in the geometric window as a background picture. In this case the student and the teacher can control if the graph of the calculated function will fit the generating curve in a useful way.

Moberg, Olofsson Christina. "Biståndsbedömarna har mycket makt, tycker jag, jag vill gärna ha lite makt själv också. : Om medbestämmande och inflytande i ALvesta hemtjänst." Thesis, Växjö University, School of Health Sciences and Social Work, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:vxu:diva-908.

Full text
Abstract:

How can co-determination and influence within the home-help service sector come about?

The aim of this paper is to find out what is considered to give co-determination and influence within the home-help service sector. The overall question was formulated from the The social workers have a lot of authority, I think; I should like to have some authority too.

- On co-determination and influence in Alvesta´s home-help service -

anticipation that there is a difference in opinion between people who have experience and those who have no experience in receiving home-help service.

Det sociala synsättets tankar (Westlund 2003), Theories about Salutogenes (Atonowski 1991), Sjöberg & Westlund 2005) and Ett socilakonstruktivistiskt synsätt om synen på äldre (Jönsson, 2001) form the main theories.

The method was constructed as a case study and was carried out in the town of Alvesta. Four groups were interviewed with three to five randomly chosen respondents in each group. Two of the interview groups consisted of persons who have personal experience of receiving home-help service and the participants in the two other interview groups lacked this experience.

The result shows that most of the participants in the interview groups, disregarded earlier experience, are of the opinion that the quality of old age care in Alvesta overall is good or very good. A certain difference in what the different groups consider to be a good life is shown. Questions about be allowed to change service, decide when it is to be done, have possibility for services without formal authority decisions after a certain age, service cheques or not, engage most participants in the interview groups that have no personal experience of home-help service. These questions do not much engage the participants in the groups that already have experience from home-help service.

Further, the study shows that nearly all group members, experience or no experience of home-help service, are of the opinion that the line of decision is unclear, a question that above all is regarded as urgent. Another important question for the respondent is the continuity in staffing. There is also a strong opinion about starting a communication regarding the reconstruction of the old nursing home “Högåsen”.

Finally, the result shows that there is a great interest from the participants, who have no personal experience of home-help service, that everybody is offered an outreach programme from a certain age.

In the following research work, the factors for the operation of a digital start-up have been identified, based on the service of virtual workshops for children between 6 and 12 years old. Currently, the whole world and our country, Peru, are going through a health crisis, due to the spread of COVID-19, which triggered the prohibition of some activities, such as face-to-face classes, as a security measure. According to the situation, Little Brains originates, a virtual platform that offers seven individual and family workshops, for children from 6 to 12 years old, who, in their free time, seek new options to enjoy this and may decrease with the levels of sedentary lifestyle. The project will be carried out through personalized workshops, where the user will be offered to learn at an appropriate pace and enjoy their free time. To identify potential customers, four experiments were carried out on their social networks and Landing Page, through publications and advertising campaigns where information regarding the workshops, prices and payment methods was provided to obtain potential customers and complete the purchasing process. Finally, the budgets assigned as investment were evaluated so that the company can start operating and estimated income data, so that with this information it is possible to evaluate whether the company in the next three years would be profitable. Also, the financing methods that will be taken by us to start the business.

Abstract:
Little Paintings is a document that describes the creation, influences and process of two films, "Betty Creek" and "New Berlin". The films are personal responses to my experiences growing-up and living in the Southern United States. The Thesis illustrates the influences of painters such as Jimmie Lee Sudduth and Willie Jinks and how their raw painting methods inspire the development of my films using a tactile approach to filmmaking.

Abstract:
Leaving Little Havana is the story of a young girl who leaves her comfortable middle-class home in La Habana just after the Cuban Revolution and, fighting to overcome cultural and language barriers, forges a new life in Miami. Dealing with a torn identity and discovering her voice are at the center of the narrative. After an endless string of escapades, she finally pulls herself together, learns the value of her inner strength by rising above bleak circumstances and gets accepted to journalism school in California. The book examines the devastating effects of immigration on a family and the struggle of a child of Cuban exiles, coming of age in a foreign society, to beat the obstacles that stand in her way to a stable and satisfying life. The narrator shows that Cuban immigrants share similar challenges with all who have aspired to make America their home.

Abstract:
This document attempts to capture the main ideas and evolution of my art making process during the three years of graduate studies at the University of New Orleans. My art making practice is an ever-evolving exploration of materials and ideas. Through art processes and experimentations I am able to overcome negative feelings about my role in society. I get lost in my process making things, thinking about things, and trying to come up with new ideas for the world. I am attempting to heighten mundane materials like cardboard, crayons, foams and concrete with intuitive abstract shape making. I am trying to present materials to the viewers in a way that is unusual and engaging. It is my hope that in doing so they might think about similar things that I think about while making the objects.

Milstead, Mary. "Quiet Little Animals." PDXScholar, 2014. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/1620.

Full text
Abstract:
Quiet Little Animals is a novel set in early-1940s Spain. The story begins with a young couple, Carmen and Ernesto, who are expecting their first child. Carmen gives birth to their daughter Isadora in a Catholic hospital, but when she wakes up after the birth, she's told that the baby has died. However, the truth is that the baby was kidnapped by the nun Sor Eugenia, who decided that she would provide the baby with a better life by sending her away to be adopted by a more "proper" family - and a young religious woman named Ava finally gets the baby she's been trying for years to have, her little Maria. The story follows the four main point-of-view characters - Carmen, Ernesto, Sor Eugenia and Ava - as their lives move past that moment when Isadora/Maria was taken from one family and given to another. In addition to the four main points of view, there are also a number of chapters that are told in the form of fairy tales. The use of multiple points of view to tell one story allows each of the characters to have a known stake in the outcome of the narrative, and is a major stylistic interest of the piece. The central themes of the book are motherhood, grief, birth and death. It also asks questions about the creation of family, fate, and the aftermath of civil war.
