Abstract:
Seventy-one participants wrote down their wisest general and practical life advice. These transcripts were then rated for wisdom by twenty independent raters, and analysed using thematic content analysis. Participants also completed questionnaire measures of wisdom (3-Dimensional Wisdom Scale, 3DWS, Ardelt 2003) mental and physical health in order to examine convergent and divergent validity for this new method of eliciting wisdom. Participants were chosen to test whether their age or background would affect wisdom. Specifically 59 participants had no psychological background in training (degrees/courses) or occupation (worked in non-psychological professions). Of these non-psychologists, 20 were young (18-30) 18 were middle aged (31-64) and 21 were older adults (over 65). The remaining 12 participants were counselling psychologists in training with at least 5 years psychology teaching and 100 clinical practice hours. Results indicated this method of eliciting wisdom correlated positively and significantly with Ardelts (2003) 3DWS. Our younger sample was significantly less wise than our middle aged, older or counselling psychologists. The counselling psychologists were significantly wiser than the young and middle aged samples, and showed a trend towards being wiser than older adults (p=.09). Qualitative analysis indicated the main general wisdom themes were persistence in the face oflifes' obstacles, do unto others as you would have done to you, look after your health, and be independent. Younger and older adults saw persistence in the face of difficulty as most important. For middle aged concerns about money predominated. For counselling psychologists the most important concerned being independent. The main themes from practical wisdom were: looking after money, the value of education, being independent, and working hard. For young the most important was gaining education and avoiding danger. For middle aged the most important was looking after your health. For older adults it was education. For counselling psychologists it was being independent.

Abstract:
The thesis is an examination of the wisdom literature preserved in the book of Proverbs, and of evidence pertinent to the nature and historical setting of this material. The first section examines the arrangement of sayings in the sentence literature, reviews the comparative Near Eastern material and its significance for the exegesis of Proverbs, and discusses the claims that early wisdom was secular, rejecting them. The second section concentrates upon the setting of the literature, with studies of 'wisdom' and 'wise men' in the Old Testament, the internal evidence for associating Proverbs with the royal court, the nature of the Joseph Narrative, Solomon's wisdom and the influence of Egypt on his administration, and, finally, the biblical and epigraphic evidence for formal education in Israel. On the basis of these studies, it is concluded that conventional views of the wisdom literature as scribal and pedagogical are ill-founded and in need of revision. It is suggested that indications within Proverbs itself are a better guide to the nature of the material, and that early wisdom literature should be viewed as an integral part of the literary culture within Israel, not as the product of an international movement or specific professional group.

Magallanes, Sophia Ann. "Bringing wisdom back down to earth : a wisdom reading of Job 28." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/5466.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to do what the poem Job 28 is trying to do in the Book of Job, which is to focus on prescribed biblical wisdom practice in order to ‘bring wisdom back down to earth’ within a discussion concerning divine justice (Job 22-31). Chapter 1 introduces what a “wisdom reading” is and why it is necessary. Chapters 2-5 of this thesis give a close reading of Job 28:1-28 and includes an intentional dialogue between how the words, phrase, and theological concepts are used in the poem and in the main three bible wisdom texts (Job, Proverbs and Qoheleth). Chapter 6 discusses the implications of reading Job 28 in light of its biblical wisdom tradition. Job 28 speaks of a hidden wisdom, but it is not obvious how this prescribed wisdom (“fear of God and avoiding evil”) is connected to divine justice until the poem is read within the of context of the three main biblical wisdom books (Job, Proverbs, Qoheleth). A close reading of Job 28:1-1 and 12-28 within the context of the biblical wisdom tradition, challenges the reader to redefine what the book of Job is saying about wisdom in ethical terms and, therefore, also provokes a redefinition of the divine gaze upon the earth in terms of divine justice. In this thesis, we shall see how wisdom and divine justice are both rooted in earthly matters. It is only when viewed as “down-to-earth” matters that we see that they are related to each other in sapiential literature, especially in Job 28. If ‘wisdom’ is understood as proper conduct on earth (avoiding evil action, Job 28:28b) prompted by an understanding that God gazes on this earth he created (fear of the Lord, Job 28:28a), then divine justice is to be understood as divine regulation of that proper conduct and attitude.

Sim, Hyung Guen. "Wisdom and salvation history in the wisdom Psalms / by Hyung Guen Sim." Thesis, North-West University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/1844.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is an exploration of the relationship of wisdom to salvation history in the book of Psalms. The notional starting point of this thesis is a conviction that there might be a juncture at which the two themes converge because in certain psalms such as Psalm 78, the Israelite concept of salvation appears to have a close relationship with the wisdom theme. In the history of Psalm interpretation so far, the concept of wisdom psalm has not been properly dealt with due to scholastic difficulty in ascertaining the clear criteria of a genre. The process of scrutinizing the history of interpretation showed that the Psalms in their final form were far more purposeful than were previously understood. The major guiding principles of the method employed are: (1) 'the canonical approach' of Brevard Childs; (2) 'the canonical criticism' of James Sanders; (3) 'the canonical process approach' of Bruce Waltke; (4) 'the Christo-canonical approach' of Jerry E. Shepherd; and (5) 'the communito-canonical approach' of deClaissé-Walford. This thesis made use of these methodological principles by attempting to read the Psalter from the beginning to the end, and by focusing mainly on the final stage of the Psalter proposed by B. Waltke as the third stage, or the final and complete Old Testament canon associated with the Second Temple, and by purposefully limiting the scope of our study to around the post-exilic period. Having dealt with the issue of classifying the wisdom psalm, the presence of the wisdom motif in many psalms which do not fall into the wisdom category serves to add a didactic dimension to the entire Psalter. In so doing, we reach a conclusion that what we are dealing with is not merely the wisdom psalms within the Psalms, but 'the wisdom Psalter' as a literary unit. Then, it can be said that the Psalter is not merely an anthology of individual psalms used for cult, but was meant to be read also as a source of min , an instruction. This means that every psalm in the Psalter has pedagogical potential, which may have been the ostensible intent of the editor(s) at the final stage of the formation of the Psalter. On this premise, this study attempts to set up a strategy to read the Psalms from the beginning to the end from book I up to book V as a wisdom Psalter, with a particular focus on how the wisdom motif relates to the salvation history motif. The question did not merely concern their interpretation as disjointed pieces, but also what their presence in the book of Psalter meant in terms of the relationship between wisdom and salvation history. This means that the study is influenced less by a historical and form critical approach, but more from a literary and canonical perspective.

Son, Buyoung. "The wisdom of Chronicles." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2017. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/19843/.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1 and 2 Chronicles, commentators have long noted a pattern of retributive justice whereby kings who comply with Yahweh’s will are rewarded with long life and honourable burial, whereas those who do not are disgraced. However, another pattern significantly emerges from a group of kings whose careers display an unexpected reversal. No convincing consensus has emerged on the significance of this reversal pattern yet. By exploring and adopting the insights of narrative film theory, particularly of cognitive film semiotics, into the effects of macro-repetition, this thesis seeks to elucidate what the implications of these unexpected reversals may have been for the ancient audience’s comprehension of the Chronicler’s communicative intent. As the reversal pattern is interwoven with the retributive pattern, the narrative may emerge as a falsifying narration, provoking a deep scepticism as to the conventional view of retribution theology. Deleuzian film theory offers a crucial insight into how this falsifying narration works. Specifically, the destabilizing effects of the reversal pattern lead to the simplistic view on ‘seeking the Lord’, taking on a deeper existential implication, which can be related to the Chronicler’s wisdom of the theological tension in the life of faith and to his theo-anthropology. Moreover, this view of the Chronicler’s theology as distinct from Samuel-Kings is rendered more plausible when considered in the light of the canonical context of Chronicles in the Hebrew Bible, where the book belongs to Ketuvim. The particular need for theological and ontological reorientation of the post-exilic Jewish community who likely formed the Chronicler’s intended audience is also a supporting factor. Thus, this study advances not only the understanding of the practical and theological effects of the Chronicler’s reversal pattern in the audience’s perception of the narrative, but also the interpretation of 1-2 Chronicles regarding its divergent theology from Samuel-Kings.

Abstract:
This thesis examines Ratnakarasanti's (ca. 970-1045 C.E.) explication of Prajnaparamita in his doxographical works and his Saratama. Based on extant Sanskrit and Tibetan primary sources, it argues that Ratnakarasanti's main teacher was Dharmakirtisri (late 10th C.E.) and that Ratnakarasanti's Saratama sought to replace his teacher's Yogacara-Madhyamika framework with a causal explanation of Prajnaparamita through redefining the term Prajnaparamita as the path to awakening, rather than its goal. By unpacking that causal explanation in light of his broader system, the thesis demonstrates the way that Ratnakarasanti's own version of Nirakaravadin-Yogacara-Madhyamika refutes cognitive images (akara) as unreal ultimately, but claims they are still perceived by buddhas out of compassion. This conclusion debunks the long-standing theory that Ratnakarasanti was an Indian proponent of the controversial Tibetan gZhan-stong despite later gZhan-stong propon-ents' attempts to claim him as their own. There are two parts to the study. The first part introduces Ratnakarasanti's life, philosophy and doxography based upon evidence from a Tibetan colophon to his Madhyamika commentary and the Tibetan hagiography of his student Adhisa (a.k.a. Atisa) and upon a comparative analysis of his doxographical works that are prerequisites for reading his Saratama. The second part consists of an annotated translation of the Saratama's introductory section, contrasted with the prior standard interpretation by Haribhadra's (9th century C.E.). In the two appendices are included a Tibetan critical edition and a separate hybrid Sanskrit and Tibetan critical edition of the Saratama's first parivarta based on the extant 11th and 13th century incomplete MSS and on the Tibetan translations in the sDe dge, Peking and sNarthang editions. The hybrid edition also includes my provisional critical edition of the root text - i.e. the first parivarta of the Aryasta - sahasrikaprajnaparamitasutra - and my own translation of two small sample sections of the Saratama, which are extant only in Tibetan, back into Sanskrit.

He, Jipeng. "A Process Theory of Wisdom." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Lyon, École normale supérieure, 2024. http://www.theses.fr/2024ENSL0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation seeks to offer an account of wisdom, drawing particularly on contemporary Anglophone epistemological literature. Given wisdom’s complexity, the aim is not to cover every aspect but rather to highlight one interesting phenomenon: the epistemic normativity of the wisdom concept. Specifically, it delves into the expectation that “wise/wisdom” will consistently pick out the same feature across different contexts, such as in the contrasting examples of a hermit’s reclusive wisdom versus a social leader’s worldly wisdom. This particularly prompts epistemological discussions, as the focus is on how the wisdom concept “ought to” be recognized and applied, especially in epistemic activities such as understanding and evaluating one’s achievement of wisdom, which is also significantly influenced by the agent’s epistemic state. The exploration of a plausible interpretation of wisdom, considering its epistemic normativity, commences with an examination of epistemic relativism, which purportedly addresses the underlying concern of reconciling conflicting wisdom concepts. The examination reveals an implicit, second-order inclination beneath the tangible first-order epistemological debates, favoring theories that help preserve successful epistemic practice. This inclination hints at setting aside incompatible theories like epistemic relativism and viewing epistemic linguistic practice as a facilitator within our broader epistemic process. This process understanding implies both a proposal to theorize epistemic notions based on mainstream epistemic discourse, and a defense against criticisms of the proposal’s reliance on past experience. experience. In this light, the dissertation develops a process theory of wisdom based on a refined understanding of the received pursuit of truth in epistemology, positioning wisdom as the ultimate goal of epistemic process. It advocates interpreting the use of “wise/wisdom” as primarily denoting ideal epistemic outcomes from first-person perspectives. With supplementary specification, this approach effectively addresses the issue of conflicting wisdom conceptions and other prominent considerations about wisdom

Abstract:

During the fall of 2008 a prototype of an educational multiplayer role-playing game called World of Wisdom (WoW) was developed as part of the specialization project TDT4570. WoW focuses on using knowledge for progressing through the game. The goal of this thesis was to design and develop a user-interface for teachers, that could be used to generate new content for WoW. In this thesis we described the design and implementation of such a user-interface called the WoW World Editor. The World Editor supports generating new maps, creatures, objects and questions for World of Wisdom. By making it easier to create the worlds, the course staff can focus on creating the knowledge for the game. For the students to be able to interact with the course staff while playing the game, we suggest a seperate client for the course staff. This client will then have additional functions that can be used to aid the students with problem, and to get valuable feedback from the players.

Abstract:
The work outlines first the process by which Aristotle laid the foundations for logic which has become the standard for correct reasoning, as well as the shortcuts which he took and has made logic virtually useless for the study of arguments as they occur in informal arguments. Then the work establishes new concepts on which actual reasoning and argumentation are based and introduces what is labeled as reasoning square, a structure on which any form of discourse can be analyzed. In order to prove the validity of the new theory, it is applied to various forms of discourse or literary devices, then to the book of Ecclesiastes, one of the most confusing books in the Bible for which no satisfactory explanation and interpretation has been offered before. And finally, the new theory is applied to analyzing scholarly works from the point of view of how consistent they are in what they say as well as their relation to the text whose meaning they claim to accurately expose

Abstract:
The study of women’s fear of crime has received considerable academic attention from a range of disciplinary directions. This thesis propels these existing debates further forward by problematising the construction of ‘fear’ and ‘safety’ in existing work and by exploring the range of ways in which public spaces are understood, and knowledge about them constructed and deployed. Using a Foucauldian and affective theoretical framework, the thesis uncovers how safe or fearful ‘knowledges’ are constituted, and reconfigures them, beyond the limits of this lexicon, as ‘at-home-ness’ and ‘un-at-home-ness’. These terms offer both broader and more precise ways of speaking about the specificity of women’s day-to-day experiences of occupying public space. With this in mind, this thesis uses a mix of qualitative methods including Walking Interviews, Map Interviews and Multimedia Diaries to investigate, with 45 female participants across three sites in the South East of England, the ways in which they situate themselves physically and emotionally in their home towns. The study begins to excavate how this knowledge, or street-wisdom, is formed and circulated, reflecting the breadth of sometimes emancipatory, sometimes exclusionary or oppressed ways in which women experience their bodies in space. By adopting this nuanced perspective on fear of crime, and by proposing an understanding of fear of crime which is more complex and contingent than existing discussions suggest, this thesis offers challenging and instructive insights into the possibilities and problematics of fear when used to inform street-wisdom.

Abstract:
This thesis explores ways of adopting elements of Calabrian folk music in compositions of contemporary music beyond the mere adoption of melodies and instruments. Through this work, I aim to create a practice for contemporary improvisation and composition that is deeply imbued with elements derived from the music theory, the sonic environment and the performance practices of Calabria. The work described in this dissertation consists of two components: ethnomusicological research and a practice-based enquiry. This research focuses mainly on three aspects of Calabrian folk music: generative principles, the tuning system and processes of bagpipes, and soundscapes created by animal bells. These aspects guided both the ethnomusicological enquiry and the creative exploration. They are first described and analysed in their original context: folk music was studied in the field, amid and within the tradition bearers; research was conducted from a cultural and musicological perspective within the methodological and ethical framework of ethnomusicology. The data emerging from the ethnomusicological investigations informed the creative enquiry carried out through practice-led research. The outcomes of my investigation into Calabrian music became the core principles of my compositions of contemporary music. Generative principles were explored from the perspectives of both composition and improvisation They informed primarily a series of pieces for saxophone solo and a composition for chamber ensemble. The tuning system and processes of Calabrian bagpipes were investigated in compositions centred on pitch and extended harmonic spaces. They informed two compositions for string quartet and a piece for saxophone quartet. Soundscapes informed the composition of a piece of spatial music for goat bells that adopts indeterminacy methods for structuring the performance. The creative work, attached to this thesis as a portfolio of compositions, is analysed through self-reflective methods and in relation to the work of other contemporary music practitioners. My enquiry of the folk sources contributes to the field of ethnomusicology with new insight into Calabrian music. The creative processes and the techniques developed throughout this research also have implications for the broader field of contemporary music, as they offer a perspective on new ways of engaging creatively with folk materials.

In many situations, from economists predicting unemployment rates to chemists estimating fuel safety, individuals have differing opinions or predictions. We consider the wisdom-of-the-crowd problem of aggregating the judgments of multiple individuals on a single question, when no outside information about their competence is available. Many standard methods select the most popular answer, after correcting for variations in confidence. Using a formal model, we prove that any such method can fail even if based on perfect Bayesian estimates of individual confidence, or, more generally, on Bayesian posterior probabilities. Our model suggests a new method for aggregating opinions: select the answer that is more popular than people predict. We derive theoretical conditions under which this new method is guaranteed to work, and generalize it to questions with more than two possible answers. We conduct empirical tests in which respondents are asked for both their own answer to some question and their prediction about the distribution of answers given by other people, and show that our new method outperforms majority and confidence-weighted voting in a range of domains including geography and trivia questions, laypeople and professionals judging art prices, and dermatologists evaluating skin lesions. We develop and evaluate a probabilistic generative model for crowd wisdom, including applying it across questions to determine individual respondent expertise and comparing it to various Bayesian hierarchical models. We extend our new crowd wisdom method to operate on domains where the answer space is unknown in advance, by having respondents predict the most common answers given by others, and discuss performance on a cognitive reflection test as a case study of this extension.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of environmental philosophy has thus far heavily depended on the extension of rights to nonhuman nature. Due to inherent difficulties with this approach to environmental problems, I propose a shift from the contemporary language of rights and duties to the concept of character development. I claim that a theory of environmental virtue ethics can circumvent many of the difficulties arising from the language of rights, duties, and moral claims by emphasizing the cultivation of certain dispositions in the individual moral agent. In this thesis, I examine the advantages of virtue ethics over deontological and utilitarian theories to show the potential of developing an ecological virtue ethic. I provide a preliminary list of ecological virtues by drawing on Aristotle's account of traditional virtues as well as on contemporary formulations of environmental virtues. Then, I propose that certain types of rules (rules of thumb) are valuable for the cultivation of environmental virtues, since they affect the way the moral agent perceives a particular situation. Lastly, I offer preliminary formulations of these rules of thumb.

Abstract:
This thesis, to be examined for the degree of PhD from Murdoch University, concerns the possible impact of the Jewish Wisdom tradition upon the text of Col l:3-3:4. (This section of the text has been chosen because it more or less delineates the extent of sapiential language in Colossians.) The impact of Torah is also to be examined, especially as it concerns the identification of Christ as both Wisdom and Torah. This is to be accomplished by a linguistic study of the sapiential language which occurs in the epistle. Chapter 1 is the Introduction: Aims and Method in which the goals of the thesis are specified and the methods used to achieved them are outlined. Chapter 2 is the Review of the Current Literature which examines and comments on other work which has been done in this or related areas. Ch3 examines the passages in the OT and other literature pertinent to our research. Ch 4 outlines a structural analysis of the whole of the sapiential section l:3-3:4. Chapters 5 to 9 are concerned with the exegesis of the passages in question and a study of the grammatical and stylistic structures which tie them together. These provide the evidence for the thesis. We have become aware of echoed terms, chiastic structures and thematic and linguistic units which carry the Wisdom/Torah motif. These are brought together to show what the writer has been doing all the time. We can see that in his use of wisdom language he has been employing the language in which the opponents couched their position. Furthermore, he has used these terms to build a christology which completely assimilates the tradition which the opponents had been claiming as their own. Instead he has built a solid case for Christ as the embodiment of Wisdom and Torah.

Abstract:
This thesis describes a program of research which aimed to explore the role of relationship self-regulation (or relationship "effort") and wisdom in relationship satisfaction. Three separate studies were conducted to examine the association between self-regulation and satisfaction, and the mechanisms for this association. Study 1 examined self-regulation, wisdom and satisfaction, using a sample of 61 couples in long-term relationships, and found that while wisdom shared little association with satisfaction, self-regulation was a significant correlate of satisfaction for men and women. Study 2 examined whether the association between self-regulation and satisfaction was mediated by communication skills in a sample of 101 couples in the early stages of their relationship. Results replicated the self-regulation/satisfaction association found in Study 1, but provided no evidence for mediation by communication. Study 3 tested for mediation of the self-regulation/satisfaction association by attributions in a sample of 73 newly-wed couples. The association between self-regulation and satisfaction was partially mediated by attributions, but self-regulation also had a direct relationship with satisfaction. It was concluded that self-regulation is an important correlate of satisfaction in relationships, and that this association cannot be fully explained by communication or attributions. Several directions for future research were provided, including the need to examine self-regulation and its predictors longitudinally, ways in which a behavioural measure of self-regulation could be developed, and the implications of self-regulation for couple therapy.

Najoli, Herman Jumba. "Wisdom and organizational citizenship behavior in leaders." Thesis, Indiana Wesleyan University, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3567715.

Full text
Abstract:

The status of wisdom in leadership discourse has been elevated as organizations seek solutions to multidimensional challenges that have led to corporate collapses and the derailment of leaders. The study of wisdom has ancient foundations but its measurement as an organizational leadership construct is relatively new. Recent research has led to the view and operationalization of wisdom as an attribute integrating the cognitive, affective, and reflective dimensions of human performance and behavior (Ardelt, 2003).

This quantitative study explored correlations between wisdom and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) at the individual level of analysis. The hypothesized association was examined using data collected on wisdom as conceptualized by Ardelt (2003) and OCB as defined by Organ (1988). Respondents ( n=193) were selected from an online panel of leaders from organizations across America and invited to complete Ardelt's (2003) three-dimensional wisdom scale (3D-WS) and the OCB scale (Podsakoff, MacKenzie, Moorman, & Fetter, 1990) for analysis of the conjectured relationship.

Results indicated that leader wisdom, as defined in the integrative approach, and leader OCB have a significant and moderately strong positive correlation. Implications include the need for a proper value of the role of both concepts for leadership and organizational practices. The measurement of wisdom is crucial in organizations and more research is recommended in future studies.

Ellison, Kristen Lynn. "Adolescent Conceptualizations of Wisdom| A Phenomenological Study." Thesis, Prescott College, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1549714.

Full text
Abstract:

This phenomenological study explored the concept of wisdom as perceived and experienced by adolescents. The research questions were: How do adolescents conceptualize wisdom?; Which aspects of 'being wise,' if any, do adolescents believe they possess?; Do adolescents believe wisdom is attainable or desirable?; and Do adolescents believe that their formal education (school) is guiding them toward the development of wisdom? From these research questions, interview questions were created and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 24 adolescents between the ages of 10-14 across two school locations. Through a process of coding the interview data for emergent themes, the findings of this study revealed that adolescent beliefs about and definitions of wisdom are in line with the existing literature and that adolescents find wisdom both desirable and attainable. Moreover, since formal education experiences are expected to play a role in wisdom development in adolescents, implications for educator practice are discussed. In particular, critical pedagogy and experiential education may be key elements for educator practice in facilitating learning experiences which cultivate wisdom, particularly in the context of the transformation economy.

Kolby, Brock Thomas. "Wisdom from the perspective of the elderly." Scholarly Commons, 2003. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/2431.

Full text
Abstract:
For many years, research and clinical practice in gerontology has been influenced strongly by cultural concepts that lead to an overall negative perception of the elderly. Recently, psychologists have examined wisdom in order to provide an alternative viewpoint to the negative conceptions of old age. This study investigated how the elderly perceived wisdom and how the psychosocial conflict of “Integrity versus Despair” was experienced by the elderly. The elderly were approached as primary sources of knowledge for their views on wisdom. Using grounded theory methodology, twenty-one volunteer participants, 70 years of age or older, from the Sierra Nevada foothills of California, were each interviewed twice for an hour in order to form an inductive, data-driven theory concerning wisdom. The elderly described wisdom as a multi-faceted construct with a wide range of components. The resulting theory displayed a process by which the foundations of wisdom were formed during a person's lifetime, what developmental processes lead to wisdom, and the ways in which wisdom was demonstrated in a person's life. Of interest to psychotherapists and developmental psychologists, the integration of Erik Erikson's identity conflict of “Integrity versus Despair” may be facilitated through positive thinking techniques used by the elderly to overcome depression and to maintain a positive mood state. Thus, wisdom, as seen from the perspective of the elderly, may provide our society with an alternative conceptualizations of aging and a way to overcome despair in late life. Wisdom may be the pinnacle of human achievement across a lifespan of development.

Park, Byeong Cheol. "Current perspectives on Wisdom in Job 28." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/2188.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTh (Old and New Testament))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.
The aim of this thesis is to discern the trends in current scholarship on the concept of wisdom in Job 28. The trends differ according to methodological perspectives (literary, historical, and theological), depending on the relationship among the concepts of wisdom as the fear of the Lord, transcendent wisdom and traditional wisdom. However, in each perspective one can find some different interpretations which are also found in other perspectives. Most current scholars from the literary perspective consider Job 28 as a wisdom poem or song, anticipating the speeches of Yahweh. For them, the theme of Job 28 criticises traditional wisdom which entails the doctrine of retribution and suggests transcendent wisdom, which is inaccessible to human being. The fear of the Lord is the practical conclusion of transcendent wisdom. For the scholars working from the historical perspective, there are various opinions about the authorship, the date, the location, and the purpose of Job 28. However, for many scholars the concept of wisdom in Job 28 reveals only transcendent wisdom, which contradicts traditional wisdom that entails the doctrine of retribution. The concept of the fear of the Lord also belongs to traditional wisdom. For many scholars who work from the theological perspective, the concept of wisdom is the fear of the Lord. The fear of the Lord in Job 28 is the repetition of the Prologue and anticipation of the speeches of Yahweh. The fear of the Lord is the practical conclusion of transcendent wisdom and can coexist with traditional wisdom.

Abstract:
Content: The removal of hair from a hide or skin by dissolving it with a mixture of lime and sulfide is a fundamentally understood feature of leather technology. Or is it? For a long time, it has been accepted within the leather literature that, in water, sulfide may be present as either hydrogen sulfide (H2S), hydrosulfide (HS-) or sulfide (S2-), depending on the pH. pH < 6 6 < pH < 12 pH > 12 H2S(aq) ⇌ HS-(aq) ⇌ S2-(aq) The generally accepted mechanism of hair burning is sulfide attack at the cystine disulfide linkages in keratin. Also, it is believed that the unhairing reaction only proceeds at an appreciable rate in the presence of the dianionic S2- species, because that fits with the technological observation that unhairing reactions only proceed at pH greater than 12. However, recent publications have provided substantive proof that the S2- species does not exist in aqueous media at any pH: researchers were unable to observe any evidence of the S2- species in a solution of Na2S dissolved in hyper-concentrated NaOH and CsOH using Raman spectroscopy. The assigned second pKa for removal of the second proton has now been estimated to be 19, making the concentration of S2-(see below) vanishingly small. HS- ⇋ S2- + H+ There is a clear contradiction between the currently accepted mechanism for sulfide unhairing with the evidenced speciation of sulfide species in aqueous environment. Here the implications for this important process are discussed and possible alternative mechanisms postulated that fit with the new knowledge. Take-Away: It is a truism that we must understand the mechanistic principles of a process in order to control it. Here, we have a big change in thinking for ‘sulfide unhairing’, so it is vital that we understand the implications for leather science and leather technology of that change.

Lasnier, Monique. "John Wisdom métaphysicien : recherches sur le sens." Paris 10, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007PA100027.

Full text
Abstract:
This study attempts to account for John Wisdom’s original approach to metaphysics. The first part provides a survey of some significant developments in philosophy in the first decades of the twentieth century. Following in Moore’s and Russell’s footsteps Wisdom started his career as a logical atomist, then moved closer to positivism. He was also greatly influenced by Wittgenstein whose thought he used with considerable skill in his own work. Wittgenstein rejected metaphysics as meaningless. Wisdom used Wittgenstein’s technique but reached opposing conclusions. In the second part extracts from Wisdom’s writings are presented and analysed under three headings: philosophy of mind, philosophy of religion, moral philosophy. The approach is unusual but motivated by Wisdom’s careful attention to detail, an issue which he considered to be of major importance in philosophy. Then the question of the meaning of metaphysics is raised: are there criteria of meaning? How should the philosopher proceed? What is a metaphysical question? How can such a question be handled? How can it be answered? In the third part the study shows that Wisdom is able to support his metaphysics with further thoughts on the nature of rationality. The coherence of Wisdom’s ideas is assessed, as well as the manner in which Wisdom tackles and solves metaphysical problems
