Abstract:
Considering the strong need for improvement of security and multimedia systems in the automotive industry, wiring harness production is becoming more and more important. Adapting to the integration of new technologies on the vehicle is a challenge for wiring harnesses manufacturers. Now the production of wiring harnesses is still quite dependent on human resources, the way of distributing the workload on the workstations having a large share in increasing productivity. Components such as terminals, connectors and seals are getting smaller and smaller, making the manual handling more difficult. A solution to this problem could be increasing the automation degree in wiring harness production. The objective of the research topic approached in this article is to identify solutions for optimizing the wiring assembly flow by partially automating the production flow. The concern for the application of automated processes in the production of car wiring is not new, but so far, the wiring manufacturers have been more focused on automating the prefabrication of the elements that compose the harness and not the wiring harness assembly line. From an economic point of view, the automation of the assembly flow would increase productivity by reducing fabrication time and the uncertainty given by the human resource dependence.

Abstract:
In the automotive industry, the assembly of wiring harnesses is done mostly manually. This leads to high labour costs as well as a high number of defects. In order to minimize these disadvantages, both industry and research made huge efforts in recent decades to increase the level of automation in the assembly of wiring harness modules. The fully automated crimping and blockloading machine e.g. Komax Zeta 656, is already successfully used in the industry as a machine for the automated assembly of small wiring harnesses. But still, there is a great potential to increase efficiency and quality in the assembly of wiring harnesses. This paper presents a newly developed machine concept for the fully automated assembly of wiring harnesses. It is shown that the new system can provide higher production efficiency compared to both the competitive systems and manual assembly. The presented concept also helps saving resources as it uses the standard crimping machine as e.g. Komax Alpha 355 as a basis which is already present in many wiring harness factories. To set up the presented mounting machine the Komax Alpha has not to be fully replaced, but only to be extended by a few components.

Development of modern information technology provides a technical platform for the wide application of virtual instrument technology. Here we apply virtual instrument technology to test the faults of wiring harnesses, such as short circuit , broken circuit , wiring error , poor contact, poor insulation and unsatisfactory impedance and monitor the product quality at real-time. We use LabVIEW of the graphical programming language based on virtual instrument as the tool to develop the testing software. It realizes the functions such as the data acquisition, storage, analysis and display, single point wiring harness testing, all wiring harness testing, impedance testing, query and statistics, etc. We uses software instead of hardware so that functions can be added or cut down at random without adding any other hardware facilities.

Abstract:
Abstract Crosstalk in wiring harness has been studied extensively for its importance in the naval ships electromagnetic compatibility field. An effective and high-efficiency method is proposed in this paper for analyzing Statistical Characteristics of crosstalk in wiring harness with random variation of position based on Polynomial Chaos Expansion (PCE). A typical 14-cable wiring harness was simulated as the object of research. Distance among interfering cable, affected cable and GND is synthesized and analyzed in both frequency domain and time domain. The model of naval ships wiring harness distribution parameter was established by utilizing Legendre orthogonal polynomials as basis functions along with prediction model of statistical characters. Detailed mean value, mean square error, probability density function and reasonable varying range of crosstalk in naval ships wiring harness are described in both time domain and frequency domain. Numerical experiment proves that the method proposed in this paper, not only has good consistency with the MC method can be applied in the naval ships EMC research field to provide theoretical support for guaranteeing safety, but also has better time-efficiency than the MC method. Therefore, the Polynomial Chaos Expansion method.

Abstract:
Since the installation and strapping of the harness, and the vehicle motion state of the automotive is different. The crosstalk automotive wire harness is not a fixed value, but a certain dynamic range in the actual situation. Through the analysis of the factors of influence cable crosstalk can draw a conclusion that the cable relative position and disturbed line termination impedance is a major factor in the production of dynamic change. We analyze the dynamic range of crosstalk of 14 core wire harness model by using a statistical method, as a result of the change of the relative position of cable far-end crosstalk (FEXT) range within 1 dB, but when the disturbed line termination impedance changes from 50Ω to 1000Ω, the cable far-end crosstalk range reached 15 dB. It provides reference basis for the automotive wiring harness electromagnetic compatibility design.

Abstract:
This master thesis is profoundly exploratory, in search of establishing consistent hypotheses on the transference of the product development process of some products from the OEMs to their suppliers, evaluating the good use and improvement of national engineering competencies, as well as factors which facilitate or difficult such a movement. It is composed by two interconnected and complementary parts: a theoretical revision and a field study. Aiming at to establish the theoretical basis to the investigation, a variety of studies has been gathered and studied, particularly those related to OEMs and suppliers, making then possible to define the problem to be studied. Considering the complexity of the problem, posed in a dynamic universe, presenting interconnections which difficult to isolate the focus of the research, preliminary hypotheses were proposed, also defining the use of two main empirical proceedings. One is the search for documental sources attached to the automotive sector, working with qualitative and quantitative data, including statistical information. The other is multiple-case studies, taking the cases of two systems suppliers, one related to the electricalelectronic distribution systems (wiring harness) and the other to vehicles cockpit panel; both of them are multiplied in sub-cases. It is presented how the product development in the automotive sector has been occurring, its phases and challenges. Some of the practices in the development of world products and the role of suppliers are also approached. The product development in the Brazilian automotive sector was also approached, aiming at bringing some contribution to the understanding of the role of the suppliers engineering that has local presence and their relations, also presenting possible parallels to the global industry and its dynamics of development. The case studies were directed to analyze some areas in which the local suppliers have competencies and autonomy, in technical terms, to proceed in developing new products to the OEMs, in Brazil and abroad. Then this study seeks to explore the relations among companies, what is the participation of the OEMs, and what reasons have favored, or not, the local role of the suppliers. An analysis of differences and similarities between the cases is presented as well. The results guided to the reelaboration of the preliminary hypotheses into more consistent ones. They also pointed out that, although the good use of national engineering has been improving, it might be better used in the development of products, promoting a better role for Brazil in face of countries with emergent engineering. However, the cases point out to the fact that the national engineering competencies have been more used by means of the presence of Brazilian engineers just alone as individuals, taking their potential to develop the engineering of other foreigner centers.

Abstract:
Sixty years ago, on October 4, 1957, Sputnik, the first man-made artificial satellite, was sent into space. Its only function is to emit a radio beep at frequencies of 20 and 40 MHz to demonstrate the space power of the USSR. Since then, satellites have been multiple and their missions have diversified. Today, the missions of the satellites are so varied that some leave Earth's orbit. We speak in the case of probes, even if, in the rest of this thesis, they will be included in the term "satellite". The best-known satellite mission of the general public is the discovery of the universe and interplanetary exploration with satellite satellites such as the Hubble International Space Telescope or probes such as Rosetta, Voyager 1 and 2, ... nevertheless nowadays Although space exploration remains a major issue for humanity, most satellites have smaller missions that have a significant impact on economic and political life. The satellites in question today have two goals: defense and commercial. In both cases the satellites can be divided into two distinct groups: observation satellites and telecommunication satellites. To operate all these satellites, use an electrical harness. The electrical harness includes all the cables present in the satellite and which does not carry any customer data. As part of this we are interested in optimizing the design of the electrical harness of satellites

Abstract:
The weight of electric and electronic components of cars has been uninterruptedly increasing through the last decades, and thus the weight of their wiring harnesses. This fact has awakened the interest of car manufacturers on the weight and cost optimization of automotive wiring harnesses . For this reason, this dissertation discusses and develops approaches to reduce the amount of copper for the purpose of current conduction, i.e. the cross-sections of all of the wires of the car, without endangering safety. On the one hand, harnesses must withstand continuous operation currents. On account of this, it is necessary to know the characteristic flow of current of the in-vehicle electrical network. Nevertheless. the huge quantity of available combinations of equipment of the car produces a proportional variety of customer-specific wiring hamesses, and makes it unfeasible to simulate all of them. This thesis points attention on specific segments of the wiring harnesses. Sorne of them can have many possible compositions, which are related to the customer's car settings. Since computation time is a limiting factor here, it is proposed to predict the bundle heating behaviors by means of response surfaces, obtained from a set of finite element simulation results and the least squares method. On the other hand, the correct wire sizes must ensure that they are protected by their associated melting fuses, so that their maximum acceptable temperature is not exceeded after short circuits. Since many wires in cars are connected to other wires with splices, or may suffer short-circuits in their electric loads, these short-circuits can flow across different wires. In modular wiring harnesses, each of the wires can have different lengths and different installation ratios, their cross-section affects the cost of the wire harness with different importance, as well as the short circuit and the final temperature of the wire. The finite volume method is used to simulate the short circuit of series-connected wires. Finally, non-linear optimization is used to find the mínimum cross sections of wires respecting the constraints of maximum temperature and mínimum short-circuit current. Finally, these two different criteria for optima! wire dimensioning are combined in the analysis of the on-board network of the vehicle in order to make a complete weight and cost minimization of the cable harnesses in a particular vehicle, considering also its modularity of loads.

Abstract:
Mobile manipulators offer the potential of simultaneous mobility and manipulation to meet the challenges of complex assembly tasks. However, there have been few attempts to utilize mobile manipulators for automating the final assembly of automotive manufacturing process. In this paper, we present the development of control strategies for a mobile manipulator to perform the assembly of automotive wiring harnesses onto a moving vehicle. We highlight the coordinated control framework that incorporates pure pursuit tracking control, discuss constrained motion primitives and reactive visual servo with force constraints, examine contact forces of the wiring harness assembly, and present experimental results for both successful and failed attempts of attaching a wiring harness to a moving vehicle body. Finally, we discuss remaining challenges in achieving robotic assembly automation on moving assembly lines.
