Abstract:
Carmen Blacker was an outstanding scholar of Japanese culture, known internationally for her writings on religion, myth and folklore – her most notable work being The Catalpa Bow: A Study of Shamanistic Practices in Japan. Importantly, a third of the volume comprises significant extracts from the author’s diaries covering a period of more than forty years, together with a plate section drawn from her extensive photographic archive, thus providing a rare opportunity to gain a personal insight into the author’s life and work. The volume includes a wide selection of writings from distinguished scholars such as Donald Keene and her former pupil Peter Kornicki in celebration of her work and legacy, together with various essays and papers by Carmen Blacker herself that have hitherto not been widely available. In addition to her scholarship, Carmen Blacker was also highly regarded for her work in promoting Japanese Studies at Cambridge and played a vital role in helping to re-establish The Japan Society, London, post-war.

Full text
Abstract:
In the motion standstill illusion, a pattern that is moving quite rapidly is perceived as being absolutely motionless, and yet its details are not blurred but clearly visible. The illusion can be observed in a wide variety of special moving stimuli that either disadvantage or fatigue the motion systems to the point where no motion is perceived but where the shape, texture, color, and depth systems are still able to function sufficiently to extract a stable image from the moving display. It demonstrates that visual processing systems for attributes such as shape, texture, color, and depth extract stable representations from moving images; only visual motion systems are capable of producing the sensation of motion.

Full text
Abstract:
Titles in the Complete series combine extracts from a wide range of primary materials with clear explanatory text to provide readers with a complete introductory resource. Complete EU Law combines extracts from leading cases and articles to take a fresh and modern look at the constitutional and substantive law of the EU. It starts by looking at the origins of EU integration and more recent developments such as the implications of the UK ‘Brexit’ vote. It then examines the role of EU institutions within the legislative process, and the sources of EU law. Next, it explores the relationship between the EU and the Member States; the supremacy of EU law and its impact upon the principle of UK parliamentary sovereignty; the direct and indirect effect of EU law in the national courts; and the ability of those national courts to request preliminary rulings from the Court of Justice. The book also examines the obligations that EU law imposes on Member States, including the operation of infringement actions and Member State liability in damages for breaches of EU law, and the obligations that it imposes on both the EU institutions and the Member States to protect human rights in the EU. It then discusses economic integration within the internal market and how EU law regulates the rights of individuals and businesses under the ‘four freedoms’, focusing on the free movement of persons and goods. Finally, the book considers competition law and its enforcement within Member States.

Full text
Abstract:
This short anthology contains extracts from three Castilian prose texts, one from the second half of the thirteenth century (General estoria IV of Alfonso X the Wise), one from the first half of the fourteenth century (El conde Lucanor of don Juan Manuel), and one from near the mid-point of the fifteenth century (Atalaya de las corónicas of Alfonso Martínez de Toledo, Arcipreste de Talavera). These passages illustrate in context many of the phonological, orthographic, morphological, syntactic, and lexical features of medieval Hispano-Romance described in the body of this book. A linguistic commentary discussing relevant forms and constructions, as well as the meaning of lexical items no longer used or employed with different meanings in modern Spanish, with cross references to the appropriate sections in the five main chapters, accompanies each selection.

Full text
Abstract:
The distal occlusion balloon thrombectomy technique involves placement of an occlusion balloon immediately distal to the thrombus or embolus. The balloon overlaps the antegrade wire. With the balloon inflated, the thrombotic/embolic material is removed over the antegrade wire using the desired thrombectomy catheter or device. The inflated balloon prevents distal migration of the embolic material during removal. Intermittent digital subtraction angiography is performed to assess for residual debris. When sufficiently extracted, the balloon is deflated and removed. Most commonly, this is performed with the balloon inserted in a retrograde manner. However, if distal access is not feasible, the antegrade sheath can be upsized.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter uses a scene in Plautus’ Amphitruo to reconstruct contemporary Roman oratorical practice in the context of the diplomacy of intervention, offering a close reading of a monologue by the slave Sosia (Amph. 186–218). In this extract Sosia describes the composition of a ‘victory speech’ for his master’s wife and, within the speech, recounts the diplomatic activity that preceded the war. Traces of the fetiales formula in the latter can be contextualized in terms of a rhetoric of intimidation, used to establish Roman supremacy even before the outbreak of war. The monologue itself, in depicting Sosia’s doubts and concerns while composing his speech, sheds light on the disposition of speakers in tense situations.

Titles in the Complete series combine extracts from a wide range of primary materials with clear explanatory text to provide readers with a complete introductory resource. This book deals with the emergence of equity and how it differs from the common law. The trust concept is explained and the different types of trust that exist outlined. These include resulting, constructive, and charitable trusts. Trusts must obey certain basic rules such as legal formalities and the three certainties of intention, subject matter, and the need for a beneficiary. There are exceptions to these strict rules, such as proprietary estoppel and certain gifts made upon death, for example secret trusts and donatio mortis causa. The office of trustee is considered, including the methods of appointment; their powers of maintenance, advancement, variation, and investment; and the fiduciary nature of their office. Equitable remedies, such as injunctions, specific performance, and tracing are included. The use of constructive trusts in cohabitation disputes is analysed.

Abstract:
All books in this flagship series contain carefully selected substantial extracts from key cases, legislation, and academic debate, providing able students with a stand-alone resource. This chapter discusses EU anti-discrimination law, which, over the past decade and a half, has expanded significantly to cover a wide range of grounds and contexts. In addition to requiring equal treatment for women and men, the Treaty provides legislative competence to combat discrimination on a range of grounds. The Charter of Fundamental Rights, which has a chapter devoted to equality, has been incorporated into the EU Treaties. Article 21 of the Charter prohibits discrimination on any ground. Articles 8 and 10 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) contain horizontal clauses requiring the EU to promote equality between men and women, and to combat discrimination based on certain grounds, namely sex, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age, or sexual orientation in all of its policies and activities.

Abstract:
In this chapter the evolution of lithic technology during the Paleoeskimo period is explored. The diversity of lithic raw materials is considered, as well as how they have been extracted and transformed into tool blanks. This was done mainly through the production of flakes and microblades, followed by the making of a wide range of tools. The evolution from spalled burins to burin-like tools, as well as the evolution of chipped tools and microblade production, and the circulation of raw materials, are some of the main topics considered. Lithic technology helps to understand the differences that have existed and the relative homogeneity of Paleoeskimo cultures in consideration of the size of their territory.

Abstract:
This book maps and critiques the European Union’s commitment to human rights in both internal and external affairs. The book covers the evolution as well as the current state of the EU’s engagement with human rights, focusing, on the internal side, on the role of EU law in the multi-faceted system of human rights protection and, on the external side, on the EU’s efforts to bind its foreign policy to promoting human rights. This book combines analysis of key developments with a wide of range of sources, including extracts from legislation, case law, policy documents, and research of other scholars. The inclusion of both primary and secondary materials is intended to develop a deep understanding of EU human rights law and policy. This title devotes significant attention to explicating the fundamental concepts and systemic features of the EU’s human rights protection and promotion. In addition, chapters devoted to individual topics provide more depth on a range of policy areas in both the internal and external dimension of EU affairs. Topics covered by these individual chapters and examined through EU human rights lens include non-discrimination and competition law, migration, trade policy, and development cooperation.

van Ruitenbeek, Jan M. Quasi-ballistic electron transport in atomic wires. Edited by A. V. Narlikar and Y. Y. Fu. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199533046.013.5.

Abstract:
This article describes quasi-ballistic electron transport in atomic wires. It begins with a review of experiments on the conduction properties for single metal atoms. Nearly all the information on the properties of such nanocontacts should be extracted from the current and voltage only. Nevertheless, a wide range of techniques has been developed to obtain detailed information. The article proceeds by considering various experimental techniques for characterizing single-atom contacts, along with their application for the study of conducting chains of individual metal atoms and for metal–molecule–metal junctions. Using metallic point contacts and molecular junctions that are of atomic size, it demonstrates that the transport of electrons can be quasi-ballistic and the deviations from perfect transmission can be quantified and interpreted.
