Abstract:
Soft actuators are compliant material-based devices capable of producing large deformation upon external stimuli. Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEA) are a type of soft actuator that operates on voltage stimuli. Apart from soft robotics, these actuators can serve many novel applications, for example, tunable optical gratings, lenses, diffusers, smart windows and so on. This article presents our current work on tunable smart windows which can regulate the light transmittance and the sound absorption. This smart window can promote daylighting while maintaining privacy by electrically switching between transparent and opaque. As a tunable optical surface scatters, it turns transparent with smooth surfaces like a flat glass; but it turns ‘opaque’ (translucent) with the micro-rough surface. The surface roughness is varied employing surface micro-wrinkling or unfolding using dielectric elastomer actuation. Moreover, this smart window is equipped with another layer of transparent micro-perforated dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA), which acts like Helmholtz resonators serving as a tunable and broader sound absorber. It can electrically tune its absorption spectrum to match the noise frequency for maximum acoustic absorption. The membrane tension and perforation size are tuned using DEA activation to tune its acoustic resonant frequency. Such a novel smart window can be made as cheap as glass due to its simple all-solid-state construction. In future, they might be used in smart green buildings and could potentially enhance urban livability.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine empirically the efficiency types of Islamic and conventional banks. It seeks to show whether the efficiency level of conventional and Islamic banks significantly differs from each other. In addition, it investigates the influential factors on each type of efficiency. Design/methodology/approach The paper utilises the data envelopment analysis in its windows version to estimate the efficiency scores reflecting the time variance and compares between banking models. The paper uses pure technical efficiency (TE) and scale efficiency to achieve the objective of the study. In addition, the panel data technique is adopted to assess the determinants of the efficiency of the banks econometrically. Findings The findings of panel regression initially indicate that the pure TE is higher for conventional banks compared to Islamic banks. However, the Islamic banks are more scale efficient than their conventional counterpart. Macro and micro indicators have different impacts on the both types of efficiency. However, the unique factors that show consistent influence on the efficiency types were loans/finance, non-interest income/finance/liquidity and GDP. Furthermore, the determinants are shaped differently for Islamic and conventional banks when the banking model is controlled for. Originality/value This paper examines the efficiency types using a unique window analysis approach to examine the types of efficiency with a longitudinal set of data from 1996 to 2011.

Abstract:
This paper study dynamic DEA model and proposes weight modeling in window analysis for multi-time period performance evaluation. It uses the weights of inputs and outputs generated as a result of static temporal efficiency evaluation to restrict weight flexibility in dynamic DEA model and observe the efficiencies, thus obtained, over multi-time period. First the optimal range of weights are determined and then it is being applied in different windows to observe the stability and consistency of efficiency evaluations. We also define consistent efficiency index and give numerical illustration to observe the working of proposed model.

Abstract:
In this paper, a linear programming (LP) model is proposed to estimate the efficiency of a decision-making unit (DMU) in the framework of dynamic Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Necessary and sufficient conditions required for characterizing dynamically efficient paths are established. An LP model is proposed to estimate the dynamic cost efficiency (DCE) measure. It is proved that the aggregate CE in an assessment window is a convex combination of CEs of available periods in the assessment window. In addition, it is shown that a DMU in an assessment window is dynamically efficient when the DMU is dynamically cost/revenue efficient. Mathematical relationships between relative, cost, revenue, and profit efficiencies are studied in the framework of dynamic DEA.

Abstract:
This study analyzes the performance efficiency of six selected banks in Nigeria for the period 2010 – 2016. DEA window analysis was employed to establish the performance efficiency of the selected banks. The analysis is based on panel data for the period under review. The result of the DEA window analysis for the reviewed period showed that the average efficiency scores under constant returns to scale ranged from 84% to 91%. Under the variable returns to scale, the average efficiency scores ranged from 91% to 95%. The average inefficiency of the selected Nigeria commercial banks under the constant returns to scale model was in the range 9 – 16%. This inefficiency could be attributed to the excess of customers deposits on the balance sheet of the selected banks. The average scale efficiency for the banks was 93%. Guaranty Trust Bank was the most efficient bank on all measures. United Bank for Africa was the most inefficient bank under constant returns to scale and variable returns to scale. It was however, more scale efficient than three other banks, an indication that its inefficiency cannot be attributed to inappropriate scale size.

Abstract:
We hereby present a dataset produced at the Wittgenstein Centre (WIC) containing comprehensive time series on educational attainment and mean years of schooling (MYS). The dataset is split by 5-year age groups and sex for 171 countries and covers the period between 1970 and 2010. It also contains projections of educational attainment to 2060 based on several scenarios of demographic and educational development. The dataset is constructed around collected and harmonized empirical census and survey data sets for the projection base year. The article present the principles and methodology associated with the reconstruction and the projection, and how it differs from several previous exercises. It also proposes a closer look at the diffusion of education in world regions and how the existing gaps in terms of generations, gender, and geography - hence called the 3Gs - have been evolving in the last forty years.

Abstract:
The resolution of spatial data has increased over the past decade making them more accurate in depicting landform features. From using a 60m resolution Landsat imagery to resolution close to a meter provided by data from Unmanned Aerial Systems, the number of pixels per area has increased drastically. Topographic features derived from high resolution remote sensing is relevant to measuring agricultural yield. However, conventional algorithms in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) used for processing digital elevation models (DEM) have severe limitations. Typically, 3-by-3 window sizes are used for evaluating the slope, aspect and curvature. Since this window size is very small compared to the resolution of the DEM, they are mostly resampled to a lower resolution to match the size of typical topographic features and decrease processing overheads. This results in low accuracy and limits the predictive ability of any model using such DEM data. In this dissertation, the landform attributes were derived over multiple scales using the concept of sliding window-based aggregation. Using aggregates from previous iteration increases the efficiency from linear to logarithmic thereby addressing scalability issues. The usefulness of DEM-derived topographic features within Random Forest models that predict agricultural yield was examined. The model utilized these derived topographic features and achieved the highest accuracy of 95.31% in predicting Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) compared to a 51.89% for window size 3-by-3 in the conventional method. The efficacy of partial dependence plots (PDP) in terms of interpretability was also assessed. This aggregation methodology could serve as a suitable replacement for conventional landform evaluation techniques which mostly rely on reducing the DEM data to a lower resolution prior to data processing.

Vilà-Giménez, Ingrid. "Non-referential beat gestures as a window onto the development of children’s narrative abilities." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/669319.

Full text
Abstract:
Co-speech gestures are children’s first path towards communication. Further in development, research has primarily focused on the role of iconic gestures in boosting children’s narrative abilities, while less is known about the effects of nonreferential gestures. The main goal of this PhD dissertation is to investigate the scaffolding role of non-referential beat gestures (i.e., rhythmic hand movements that are associated with prosodic prominence in oral discourse) in the development of oral narrative abilities in children. Given the fact that beat gestures act as highlighters of linguistic properties such as rhythm, information focus or discourse structure, we hypothesize that these gestures can help children frame discourse. In order to test this general hypothesis, this thesis includes three empirical studies ––each one described in a separate chapter. Study 1 is a longitudinal study which analyzes the speech and gestures produced by 45 14- to 58-month-old children in naturalistic interactions with their caregivers. Results show that the early production of beats, as opposed to the production of iconic gestures and hand flip gestures (i.e., non-referential gestures performed by turning the wrist of the hand), predicts later narrative abilities at 5 years of age. The other two studies (Study 2 and Study 3) use a between-subjects narrative training task with a pretest–posttest design to investigate whether non-referential beat gestures can be key in bolstering narrative discourse performance in a total of 91 5- to 6-year-old children. While the first study examines whether multimodal training in which children observe beat gestures can contribute to improving their narrative performance in terms of narrative structure, the second study analyzes whether training which encourages children to produce beat gestures ––as opposed to merely observing them–– can have the same effects in terms of narrative structure and fluency. The results of both studies demonstrate that children who observed beat gestures during training (Study 2) and children who were encouraged to produce them (Study 3) showed a significant gain in the quality of their posttest narrative performance as opposed to children who were exposed to the control conditions. Altogether, the results of the abovementioned studies show the importance of a less-studied gesture in children’s language development, i.e., beat gesture, and how this type of non-referential gesture has a strong link to children’s narrative development. While results from the Study 1 demonstrate the predictive role of beats in children’s later narrative abilities, results from Studies 2 and 3 reveal the essential role of training with beat gestures for short-term improvement in children’s narrative discourse performance. Moreover, these findings are relevant not only to understand the value of the multimodal integration between gesture and speech in child development, but also have important methodological implications for teachers and speech therapists working on narrative abilities.

Abstract:
The thesis aim is to offer a general assessment of potential of offshore wind deployment in Italy. More specifically, it aids with the identification of the most promising locations and estimates the levelized cost of energy of the areas found suitable. Furthermore, the thesis develops a simple technical feasibility study at one of these sites, which specifically focuses on the design of the wind turbines foundations, considering and comparing different geotechnical solutions. It is been found that, in Italy, the offshore area suitable for the installation of wind farms is approximately 110,000 km2, with an estimated theoretical annual energy production of 188.25 TWh, more than half of the Italian electricity need. Locations identified as promising are the Adriatic Sea, and the Ionian Sea of the Apulia region and the South-West part of Sicily. For these areas the LCOE analysis has yielded values ranging between 90 $/kWh to 130 $/kWh, in line with European average. The case of study indicated that anchors’ cost strongly depends on local met-ocean conditions, as it is found by comparing the results obtained for the Italian case study with Hywind Scotland pilot floating wind farm, used as benchmark. Comparison between two different anchor solutions has also shown that the foundation choice has also a significant impact on the overall cost for a plant set-up.

Abstract:
SummaryThe development of wind energy is concentrating in forests, as windy and thus economically favourable sites can often be found here. However, the conflict with species conservation in general and bat conservation in particular is especially high in forests. We here examine the impact assessment on bats in the context of the legally prescribed normative framework in wind farm planning in the forest – from the study design to the methods used and the assessment itself. With regard to bats, the focus here is on avoiding direct killing and reducing the impairment of their habitat. Guidance documents for the German federal states define the extent of the surveys, the survey methods, and the spatial and temporal scope of a survey. They also recommend measures to compensate for potential negative impacts of wind energy plants (WEP). However, their effect on the quality of the expert reports on bats is low. In most cases, the search for roost trees, mist netting, different types of acoustic monitoring (active and passive) and radio tracking are used. In particular, numerous methodological problems at the technical and analytical levels reduce the validity of acoustic surveys. The success of mist netting bats also depends on numerous parameters. The success of roost tree surveys can be significantly improved by radio tracking. However, for a meaningful quantification of the habitat requirements of a bat population, radio tracking is usually used on too few animals for too short a time. The evaluation of the collected data, shown here on the basis of acoustically determined activity densities, is subjective because evaluation criteria are lacking. The most frequently recommended and thus implemented methods of conflict mitigation are CEF (= Continued Ecological Function and FCS (= Favourable Conservation Status) measures as well as nacelle monitoring and selective shut-down of wind turbines. These measures also show some weaknesses, but we consider the maintenance and development of forest sites as or into ecologically valuable habitats, as well as the reduction of the number of bat fatalities by means of specific algorithms (ProBat tool), to be sensible. Finally, we make suggestions for improving and objectifying the impact assessment of wind-energy facilities in forests.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper aims to survey, identify and present the relevant studies and their findings regarding the efficiency of banking systems in Europe with the application of the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) window technique approach. Notwithstanding, another goal is to provide a background on the DEA methodology and present the window technique approach and highlight its strengths and limitations. This article implements an extensive literature review of studies that employ the WDEA (window DEA) methodology in the efficiency evaluation of European banking. The conducted literature review has surveyed the Scopus, Web of Science (SSCI and SCI papers) and CROSBI (Croatian Scientific Bibliography) databases with „Data Envelopment Analysis“, „Window“ and „Bank“ as keywords for the search, which resulted in a total of 89 hits (41 in Scopus, 47 on WoS and 1 on CROSBI). Thereafter, a manual survey of these studies has been conducted, which eventually resulted in 12 papers regarding the efficiency of European banking. This study identifies all the relevant previous work regarding the efficiency of European banking with the application of WDEA (DEA-window technique) as well as a presentation of their used models, the selected variables and their findings. This literature review indicates that the surveyed studies have been published in the period between 2007 and 2020 and have included the time frame from 1995 to 2017. The longest study includes 13 years, whereas the shortest includes 3 analysed years. The findings primarily show the applicability of WDEA in the literature.

Abstract:
Anomaly intrusion detection in Host-based Intrusion Detection System (HIDS) is a process intended to monitor operations on a host to identify behaviors that differ from a “normal ” system behavior. System call based HIDS uses traces of calls to represent the behavior of a system. Due to the volume of data generated by applications and the operating system, sliding windows are applied in order to asses an online environment, allowing intrusions to be detected in real time while being still executed. The respective study explores the impact that the size of the observation window has on Machine Learning (ML) one-class algorithms.

Full text
Abstract:
Screw piles need to be upscaled for offshore use e.g. being an alternative foundation and anchor form for offshore floating wind turbines, although the high demand of vertical installation forces could prevent its application if conventional pitch-matched installation is used. Recent studies, using numerical and centrifuge physical tests, indicated that the vertical installation force can be reduced by adopting over-flighting which also improved axial uplift capacity of the screw pile. The current study extends the scope to axial cyclic performance with respect to the installation approach. Using quasi-static discrete element method (DEM) simulation it was found that the over-flighted screw pile showed a lower displacement accumulation rate, compared to a pitch-matched installed pile, in terms of load-controlled cyclic tests. Sensitivity analysis of the setup of the cyclic loading servo shows the maximum velocity during the tests should be limited to avoid significant exaggeration of the pile displacement accumulation but this may lead to very high run durations.

Abstract:
Between 2014 and 2020 over 1.8 million refugees fled from Venezuela to Colombia as a result of a humanitarian crisis, many of them without a regular migratory status. We study the short- to medium-term labor market impacts in Colombia of the Permiso Temporal de Permanencia program, the largest migratory amnesty program offered to undocumented migrants in a developing country in modern history. The program granted regular migratory status and work permits to nearly half a million undocumented Venezuelan migrants in Colombia in August 2018. To identify the effects of the program, we match confidential administrative data on the location of undocumented migrants with department-monthly data from household surveys and compare labor outcomes in departments that were granted different average time windows to register for the amnesty online, before and after the program roll-out. We are only able to distinguish negative albeit negligible effects of the program on the formal employment of Colombian workers. These effects are predominantly concentrated in highly educated and in female workers.

Full text
Abstract:
Bombus terrestris constitute important pollinators of greenhouse crops. In Israel the species utilized is, whose colonies are reared commercially. This is a primitively social species with a particular colony development. It encompasses two social phases: a eusocial phase in which the queen dominates reproduction, and a competition phase in which workers compete with the queen for the parentage of males. These workers are distinguished by accelerated ovarian development, high production of JH, and elevated levels of dopamine in the brain. Queen-worker conflict is also manifested in overt aggression among all members of the nest. High aggression is correlated with dominance status of the bees and is also correlated with octopamine levels in the brain. After verifying that JH III is the only JH produced by the bees and validating the assay for its measurements (RCA & RIA), we used JH as an indicator of worker reproduction. Queens taken from colonies both before and after the competition phase were equally effective in inhibiting worker reproduction. Moreover, there is only a narrow window, around the competition point, in which workers may have the opportunity to initiate reproduction. Before that point they are inhibited by the dominant queen, while after that point both the queen and those workers with accelerated ovarian development exert strong inhibition on worker nest mates. Thus, "queen dominance deterioration" is not the primary cause in eliciting the queen-worker conflict. Queens convey their presence by means of a chemical signal that is extractable in organic solvent and that is normally spread on the cuticle. Total body extract and body washes, applied on dead virgin queens, were able to inhibit the release of JHin vitro in queenless workers. However, none of the prominent exocrine gland investigated mimicked this function. It is possible that the source of the putative pheromone is an unknown gland, or that it emanates from an assembly of glands. Chemical analyses of the prominent glands revealed a plethora of compounds the function of which should be further investigated. Understanding the social behavior of B. terrestris paves the way to facilitate colony manipulation and to adjust the colonies for specific pollination requirements.

Abstract:
Recently the statistical characterizations of financial markets based on physics concepts and methods attract considerable attentions. The correlation matrix formalism and concept of multifractality are used to study temporal aspects of the Ukraine Stock Market evolution. Random matrix theory (RMT) is carried out using daily returns of 431 stocks extracted from database time series of prices the First Stock Trade System index (www.kinto.com) for the ten-year period 1997-2006. We find that a majority of the eigenvalues of C fall within the RMT bounds for the eigenvalues of random correlation matrices. We test the eigenvalues of C within the RMT bound for universal properties of random matrices and find good agreement with the results for the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random matrices—implying a large degree of randomness in the measured cross-correlation coefficients. Further, we find that the distribution of eigenvector components for the eigenvectors corresponding to the eigenvalues outside the RMT bound display systematic deviations from the RMT prediction. We analyze the components of the deviating eigenvectors and find that the largest eigenvalue corresponds to an influence common to all stocks. Our analysis of the remaining deviating eigenvectors shows distinct groups, whose identities correspond to conventionally identified business sectors. Comparison with the Mantegna minimum spanning trees method gives a satisfactory consent. The found out the pseudoeffects related to the artificial unchanging areas of price series come into question We used two possible procedures of analyzing multifractal properties of a time series. The first one uses the continuous wavelet transform and extracts scaling exponents from the wavelet transform amplitudes over all scales. The second method is the multifractal version of the detrended fluctuation analysis method (MF-DFA). The multifractality of a time series we analysed by means of the difference of values singularity stregth (or Holder exponent) ®max and ®min as a suitable way to characterise multifractality. Singularity spectrum calculated from daily returns using a sliding 250 day time window in discrete steps of 1. . . 10 days. We discovered that changes in the multifractal spectrum display distinctive pattern around significant “drawdowns”. Finally, we discuss applications to the construction of crushes precursors at the financial markets.
