Eckenroth, Lauren D. "Dear Mr. Wilson: Dame Edith Sitwell's letters to J.G. Wilson, 1933-1959." Thesis, Boston University, 2012. https://hdl.handle.net/2144/12357.
Full textThis collection gathers and annotates letters from avant garde poet and biographer Dame Edith Sitwell to John Gideon Wilson, manager ofJ&E Bumpus Ltd., booksellers in London from 1923 to 1959. They were composed while Sitwell was completing Victoria ofEngland (1936) and writing-among other works-/ Live under a Black Sun (1937), Still Falls the Rain (1942), and Fanfare for Elizabeth (1946). The letters reveal their friendship and their fine taste in judging new authors, including Dylan Thomas. In the 1920s and 1930s Sitwell became notorious for her self-promotion, theatrical readings, and eccentric sense of style. These letters to J.G. Wilson show a fascinating and personal side to a woman who built a contentious literary reputation.

The aim of this research is the appreciation and documentation of Wilson Choji Iguti’s significant manual shaping through his most relevant works. His manual technique has stood out in the growing universe of digital processes, which is generally called 3D printing. The chapter Modeling and Design discusses the importance of these two processes and their main features in design courses and also highlights manual modeling as essential in developing new products as part of design thinking. The procedures that substantiate this work employ qualitative research. It makes use of interviews with context interpretation and cases, which are most suitable for collecting data about the life of a professional. This research is supported by the method of Oral History by tape recording interviews and testimonials which had their own strategies to drive the narrative. In addition to documentation, this method allows the transcription of information as interviewee’s quotes along the work. After diving in the work of more than thirty years of Estudio Iguti, which contributed to the toy market and also other products, models produced by Wilson Choji Iguti were judiciously selected and organized in chronological order from the 1980s to the present. Iguti’s working method was documented by two products, in the case of one of them we accompanied and recorded the modeling process on a daily basis. His deep knowledge of industrial processes, his experience with different materials and techniques, his self-criticism and the “flow” of his creative process make the difference between him and other manual modelers evident. Five cases were selected from the interviews and they are intrinsic parts of stories he told. Wilson Choji Iguti shares his experience with those who wants to talk to him about his work; this is the way he spread his knowledge, on the other hand he never bothered to register his own production. This work wishes to leave references of the manual modeling method for future generations.

This thesis describes the process I used to research, draw, paint and finally design the costumes for Temple University's theatrical production of Pudd'nhead Wilson written by Charles Smith. I present the differences between the novel by Mark Twain and the script by Charles Smith. The early design process is then described including meetings with the director Doug Wager, the scenic designer Ian P. Guzzone and the lighting designer Christopher Hetherington. My preliminary costume research is illustrated in the text and the accompanying appendices followed by full color gouache renderings. I discuss the creation of the costumes from first fittings through final dress rehearsal and the challenges that were overcome. A separate chapter, including costume and make-up design, is dedicated to the controversial character of The Minstrel. Finally, the conclusion contains images enabling the reader to visualize the design of each character from preliminary collage, rendering and finally a production photo. These are combined with my thoughts and reflections on the final designs.

Full textQuantum Chromodynamics with two light quark flavors is considered in the lattice regularization with improved Wilson fermions. In this formulation chiral symmetry is explicitly broken by cutoff effects linear in the lattice spacing a. As a consequence the isovector axial currents require improvement (in the Symanzik sense) as well as a finite renormalization if they are to satisfy the continuum Ward-Takahashi identities associated with the isovector chiral symmetries up to small lattice corrections of order a^2. In exploratory numerical simulations of the lattice theory algorithmic difficulties were encountered at coarse lattice spacings. There the hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm used suffers from a distorted Dirac spectrum in the form of unphysically small eigenvalues. This is shown to be a cutoff effect, which disappears rapidly as the lattice spacing is decreased. An alternative algorithm, the polynomial hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm, is found to perform significantly better in the presence of exceptionally small eigenvalues. Extending previously used methods both the improvement and the renormalization of the axial current are implemented non-perturbatively in terms of correlation functions formulated in the framework of the Schrödinger functional. In both cases this is achieved by enforcing continuum Ward identities at finite lattice spacing. Together, this restores the isovector chiral symmetry to quadratic order in the lattice spacing. With little additional effort the normalization factor of the local vector current is also obtained. The methods developed and implemented here can easily be applied to other actions formulated in the Schrödinger functional framework. This includes improved gauge actions as well as theories with more than two dynamical quark flavors.

Full textThis thesis is motivated by the AdS/CFT correspondence and the duality between gluon scattering amplitudes and light-like polygonal Wilson loops in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. At strong coupling light-like polygonal Wilson loops and gluon scattering amplitudes have a description in terms of space-like minimal surfaces in AdS5. We use a Pohlmeyer reduction to derive a classification of all space-like minimal surfaces in AdS3xS3 that have flat projections. The classification consists of nine different classes and contains space-like, time-like and degenerated AdS3 projections. For solutions that admit a closed light-like polygonal boundary we calculate the regularized area. At weak coupling light-like polygonal Wilson loops and gluon scattering amplitudes obey the BDS Ansatz corrected by a remainder function. We present a renormalisation group equation technique using self-crossing Wilson loops to extract the divergences of the remainder function in this limit. Using this technique we analyse two different types of self-crossing. We present the leading and sub-leading divergences up to four loops for a crossing between two edges and the leading divergences for a crossing between two vertices. For a crossing between two edges we present an analytic continuation to the euclidean regime to predict certain terms that have to occur in the unknown analytic expression of the remainder function.

Full textThis thesis is dedicated to the study of Wilson loops in supersymmetric gauge theories, we will study their properties and how they are related to physical observables, such as the Bremsstrahlung function that controls to the energy radiated by an accelerating particle. We will give various examples of the computation of their expectations values using perturbative and non-perturbative techniques. For SU(N) superconformal QCD we perform a three-loop calculation of the generalized cusp anomalous dimension of the BPS Wilson loop operator using HQET formalism. We obtain an expression which is valid at generic geometric and internal angles and finite gauge group rank N. For equal and opposite angles this expression vanishes, proving that at these points the cusp becomes BPS. From its small angle expansion we derive the corresponding Bremsstrahlung function at three loops, matching the matrix model prediction given in terms of derivatives of the Wilson loop on the ellipsoid.

Full textThis thesis locates Wilson historically among institutions of higher learning in the United States; traces the development of the College in terms of its founding, governance, curriculum, and campus life; and examines events leading up to Wilson's near demise in 1979. Wilson's small size, its practice of encouraging congenial interaction between students and faculty, its commitment to teaching, its long term affiliation with the Presbyterian Church, and its close ties with the community of Chambersburg are cited as factors contributing to Wilson's renaissance.
What makes Wilson more interesting than other small women's colleges of its class was the fact that its alumnae, students, and faculty successfully fought the Trustees' decision to close the College because of financial pressures and dwindling enrolment. In 1979 Wilson became the only college in the United States ever ordered to remain open by a court of law.

From an interdisciplinary angle that takes in both literature and theater studies, this thesis turns its gaze on both language and sound in the oeuvre of American theater director Robert Wilson in the three decades that separate two of his works: Deafman Glance (1970), a play characterized by the absence of words and sound, and Monsters of Grace II (2013), his first work for radio. Wielding theoretical propositions from postdramatic and performative theater, this analysis investigates the process by which Wilson came to reconcile himself with oral language, as well as exploring new approaches to the use of voice in theater. The central object of this study, Monsters of Grace II is examined in greater detail, be it in the context of productions at the crossroads between theater and radio or as a framework by which to investigate the material and corporeal possibilities of experimentation in radio.

Full textINTRODUCTION: Wilson\'s disease is an autosomal recessive disorder, caused by mutations in the gene ATP7B, leading to toxic copper accumulation in the body. Because it is a rare disease, large series with long-term follow-up are limited in literature. We reported the experience of Hospital das Clínicas of Sao Paulo University School of Medicine (HC-FMUSP) with Wilson\'s disease patients diagnosed between 1946 and 2010. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 262 cases was performed describing the clinical presentation, the results of diagnostic tests, the patterns of treatment response and outcome. RESULTS: The mean age at the onset of symptoms was 17.4 years (7- 49 years). Patients were followed for a mean of 9.6 years (0-45 years). The most frequent clinical presentations were hepatic (36.3%), neurological (34.7%), asymptomatic (16.8%), neuro-psychiatric (8.3%) and hematologic (1.9%). Other less common forms were renal, neurological-hepatic, and musculoskeletal. Dysarthria and clinical manifestations of decompensated liver cirrhosis were the main neurological and liver features, respectively. The diagnostic parameters observed in this cohort of patients were Kayser-Fleischer rings in 78.3%, low serum ceruloplasmin in 98.3%, high 24-h urinary excretion of copper in 73.0%, positive challenge test with d-pencillamine in 54.0% and detection of two mutations of ATP7B gene in 84.4%. The magnetic resonance of brain showed abnormalities in the basal ganglia in 77.7% of those examined. D-penicillamine was prescribed in 93.6% of 245 cases as the first drug, and 53% reported adverse effects. It was need to replace it in 50 individuals. Other drugs used were salts of zinc and trientine. There was no significant difference between the therapeutic results of these three drugs (p = 0.2). The cases with poor adherence to therapy evolved with a worse outcome when compared to regular users (p <0.0001). Nine patients underwent liver transplantation. During the follow-up 82 patients died. The main causes of death were hepatic decompensation 41.5% (variceal hemorrhage, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, encephalopathy) and pneumonia 20.7%. Three patients committed suicide. CONCLUSIONS: There is no gold standard or pathognomonic test for diagnosing this disease. Any young patient with hepatic, neurological, neuropsychiatric, hematologic, renal, or osteoarticular manifestations of unknown cause should be investigated for Wilson\'s disease. In addition to the classical pharmacotherapy, specific psychiatric evaluation is necessary to detect early symptoms of depression.

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to review Wilson loop operators in the contexto f the AdS/CFT correspondence. These operators, wich are present in any gauge theory, are important because they furnish an order parameter for confinement/deconfinement phase transitions. Besides this, they are particularly relevant in the study of the AdS/CFT correspondence because: i) they allow, in some cases, for exact results thanks to localization to matrix models and make it possible to perform highly non-trivial tests of the correspondence; ii) they are the gauge theory objects dual to strings propagating in the bulk of the space and give a rich dictionary between bulk (AdS) and boundary (CFT) quantities. After reviews of Wilson loops in gauge theories and of the Ads/CFT correspondence, we will introduce the definition of 1/2 BPS supersymmetric Wilson loops, we will compute them at weak coupling and then at any order in the coupling constant via matrix model techniques, and finally we will compare our results with minimal surface computations in the bulk, finding perfect agreement.

Full textThe 28th President of the United States (1913-1921) and founding father of the League of Nations, Woodrow Wilson, is mainly known for his oeuvre in the field of international relations. On the path from the University to the White House, his work in the fields of political theory and constitutional law is nevertheless imposing. This doctoral dissertation aims at exploring the constitutional thought of Woodrow Wilson and situating it in the context of progressive constitutionalism. It provides a thorough analysis of the Wilsonian critique of the separation of powers in the American system. It would like to show that this critique is based, under the auspices of legal realism, on an original and subtle idea of the « Living Constitution » and of its constraining force

Full textThe purpose of this thesis is to show how Wilson Harris, the Guyanese writer, transcends the traditional categories of both fiction and language to present reality as he perceives it, that is to say as a plural and fluid entity. Plurality and fluidity are the very characterisitics that make the writer's thought so complex and dense. The aim of this study is therefore to try and explain it through an analysis of its defining concepts and themes. After defining, in the first part, the characteristics of the modern world, which the Guyanese writer describes as polarized and fragmented owing to man's blindness, this study throws light on the central role of the metaphors in Harris’s writing through the analysis of their pattern of metamorphosis. It is indeed through this process of transformation that the writer accounts for the perceptual changes that take place in the protagonists of the novels enabling them to transcend the world's polarizations. The third part focusses on the poetics of fiction and especially on its originality. The aim is to show how deconstruction is at the heart of the novelist's fictional world. It is this deconstructive process that often baffles the reader and we have underlined its central characteristics, thanks to the analysis of the writer's fundamental concepts such as the "vision of consciousness" or the "infinite rehearsal," in order to make his vision more perceptible to the reader
