Abstract:
This volume presents new perspectives on how an agonistic understanding of politics, which emphasises disagreement and conflict, can be made fruitful for debates on state theory. It deals with the theories by Chantal Mouffe, Ernesto Laclau, Bonnie Honig, William Connolly, James Tully and other theorists who advocate an agonistic understanding of politics. The volume discusses parliament, parties, political representation, the demos, law, the constitution and science. In addition, it shows what it means to understand stabilised social practices and discourses as institutions. The volume is aimed at students and teachers in higher education as well as researchers who are interested in the further developments of agonistic democratic theory. With contributions by Christoph Held, Steffen Herrmann, Dirk Jörke, Oliver Lembcke, Miriam Malte, Franziska Martinsen, Danny Michelsen, Milos Rodatos, Luzia Sievi, Rieke Trimҫev, Stefan Wallaschek, Manon Westphal and Gabriele Wilde.

Abstract:
This article examines the city of London—its history, topography, governance, people—as a most fruitful subject of books in the late medieval period. It considers a poem that praises London’s “renown, riches and royalte” as an example of metropolitan textual production and transmission during the period. It also explores some of the contexts in which manuscript and print were brought together, or conversely kept apart, in the decades which immediately followed the introduction of printing to England by William Caxton in c.1476. In addition, it looks at London readers as a significant audience for texts of wider national significance, the interpenetration of different forms of book production in London at the start of the sixteenth century, and three manuscripts: the two separate volumes of theNew cronyclesplus the Guildhall manuscript of theGreat Chronicle.

Balcerski, Thomas J. Bosom Friends. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190914592.001.0001.

Abstract:
The friendship of the bachelor politicians James Buchanan (1791–1868) of Pennsylvania and William Rufus King (1786–1853) of Alabama has excited much speculation through the years. Why did neither one ever marry? Might they have been gay, or was their relationship a nineteenth-century version of the modern-day “bromance”? Then, as now, they have intrigued by the many mysteries surrounding them. In Bosom Friends: The Intimate World of James Buchanan and William Rufus King, Thomas Balcerski explores the lives of these two politicians and discovers one of the most significant collaborations in American political history. Unlikely companions from the start, they lived together as messmates in a Washington, DC, boardinghouse. They developed a friendship that blossomed into a significant political partnership. Before the Civil War, each man was elected to high executive office: William Rufus King as vice president in 1852, and James Buchanan as the nation’s fifteenth president in 1856. This book recounts the story of their bosom friendship through a dual biography of Buchanan and King. Special attention is given to their early lives, the circumstances of their boardinghouse friendship, and the political gossip that has circulated about them ever since. In addition, the author traces their many contributions to the Jacksonian political agenda, manifest destiny, and the debates over slavery, while finding their style of politics to have been disastrous for the American nation. Ultimately, Bosom Friends demonstrates that intimate male friendships among politicians were, and continue to be, an important part of success in the clubby world of American politics.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the opening salvos in the legal battle between the Federal League and the American and National Leagues that lasted from December 1913 to June 1914. It all began on December 27, 1913, when star shortstop and future Hall of Famer Joe Tinker signed a three-year contract with the Chicago Federals, or “ChiFeds.” Tinker jumped to the Federal League after his contract was sold from the Cincinnati Reds to the Brooklyn Dodgers. His defection forced organized baseball to begin taking the Federal League challenge more seriously. The Federal League was able to secure a total of fifty big league players for the start of the 1914 season, with catcher William Killefer proving to be the most significant legally. This chapter examines the lawsuits in which the Federal League lost, including the ones involving Killefer and Samuel “Howie” Camnitz.

Trotter, Joe William, and Dick Gilbreath. Pittsburgh and the Urban League Movement. University Press of Kentucky, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5810/kentucky/9780813179919.001.0001.

Abstract:
During the Great Migration, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, became a mecca for African Americans seeking better job opportunities, wages, and living conditions. The city's thriving economy and vibrant social and cultural scenes inspired dreams of prosperity and a new start, but this urban haven was not free of discrimination and despair. In the face of injustice, activists formed the Urban League of Pittsburgh (ULP) in 1918 to combat prejudice and support the city's growing African American population. In this broad-ranging history, Joe William Trotter Jr. uses this noteworthy branch of the National Urban League to provide new insights into an organization that has often faced criticism for its social programs' deep class and gender limitations. Surveying issues including housing, healthcare, and occupational mobility, Trotter underscores how the ULP -- often in concert with the Urban League's national headquarters -- bridged social divisions to improve the lives of black citizens of every class. He also sheds new light on the branch's nonviolent direct-action campaigns and places these powerful grassroots operations within the context of the modern Black Freedom Movement. The impact of the National Urban League is a hotly debated topic in African American social and political history. Trotter's study provides valuable new insights that demonstrate how the organization has relieved massive suffering and racial inequality in US cities for more than a century.
