Abstract:
One of the indicators for the global importance of the anonymous Nibelungenlied certainly proves to be the great interest to develop new translations into modern languages, here English. William Whobrey, who used to teach at Yale University, endeavors to render this major epic poem, along with the sequel, the Klage, once again into an updated English version. He is fully aware of the many previous efforts and acknowledges them, but he insists that his translation deserves particular attention especially for three reasons. First, he worked hard to offer a maximum level of clarity particularly for the modern student reader, without moving too far away from the original Middle High German. Overall, Whobrey has achieved that goal, as numerous spot checks have confirmed. One can always quibble somewhat, so when he renders, for instance, “der Nibelungen nôt” in the very last line as “the downfall of the Nibelungen” (199). Moreover, there are many small issues that make me wonder, so when in stanza 208 it clearly says that “the warrior Hagen spoke,” which here is rendered as “commanded Hagen” (168). Hagen emphasizes that he and his companions (pl.) will keep watch, which Whobrey makes into the singular “My companion and I.” This could make sense, but it should have been annotated.

Abstract:
AbstractAt the beginning of the twentieth century, Germany moved to the institutional forefront of the art world. Through the creation of two museums, in Hagen and in Weimar, dedicated to contemporary avant-gardes in art, architecture, and design, the recently united nation propagated its claim for international leadership in the cultural sphere. Both establishments were the result of private initiatives of collectors who possessed great literary talent and artistic distinction and who were strongly opposed to the aesthetic ideals of the main arbiter of German taste, Emperor William II. This essay is the first comparative study of the museums in Hagen and Weimar, whose founders disagreed with developments in Darmstadt but were inspired by those in Hamburg and, to a lesser degree, in Krefeld. Analyzing their intellectual origins and historic development, the essay provides a comprehensive chronology as well as an articulate topography of early-twentieth-century German art institutions promoting cultural innovation.

Abstract:
Even though numerous individuals have been sentenced for committing some of the most heinous crimes known to mankind, there still does not exist clear guidelines as to the process which should be followed by courts that are in the process of determining an appropriate sentence for individuals guilty of committing international crimes. The aim of this study was to establish how South African courts should approach the sentencing of individuals guilty of committing international crimes as South Africa has not as yet had to sentence an individual guilty of committing an international crime. It is, however, significantly clear that South African courts must follow Section 51 of the Implementation of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court Act 27 of 2002 and impose a sentence of imprisonment for life except if substantial and compelling circumstance exist which justifies a departure from this standard. In the establishment of substantial and compelling circumstances the South African courts will definitely revert to the jurisprudence of the international criminal courts and tribunals and that of South African criminal courts as well. This study is comprised of a literature review consisting of international legal instruments, legislation, electronic sources, text books, academic journals and South African, as well as international case law.

Connell, David 1974. "Hazen-Williams C-factor assessment in an operational irrigation pipeline." Thesis, McGill University, 2001. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=33737.

Full text
Abstract:
In the spring of 1998, a closed end gravity flow pipeline was installed in the Lethbridge Northern Irrigation District. The pipes ranged from 900 mm to 300 mm in diameter.
Manholes were placed at several locations along the pipeline and were used to install velocity meters and pressure transducers, which recorded data every second. Pressures and velocities during periods of steady state were used to calculate the head loss, Re and the Hazen-Williams friction factor, "C", along lengths of constant diameter.
The results were compared to the industry design standard of C = 150 (used for the design of rigid PVC pipe installations) and to the theoretical hydraulically smooth line developed from the Moody diagram and the Darcy-Weisbach equation. Since the maximum and minimum calculated values of C came in the 750 mm and 900 mm diameter pipes, respectively, and all other C values, including those from the 300 mm and 650 mm diameters, fell between these, pipe diameter was assumed not to be a variable. Therefore all the field data was averaged. The average value of Re for the range studied was 9.73 x 105 . The corresponding best-fit C value is 147.7, which is 6.0% lower than the derived theoretical maximum. Since the derived theoretical maximum is the ideal condition and the recorded data was slightly lower and therefore determined be a good representation of what can be expected in true field conditions.

Abstract:
Abstract Chapter 3 recounts the case history of Harijs Svikeris, a senior officer in a notorious Latvian killing unit called the Arãjs Kommando, which killed thousands of Jews in Latvia, including the Rumbula Forest massacre in Riga. The elimination of Latvian Jewry could not have been accomplished without willing, locally recruited collaborators such as Harijs Svikeris, who was one of three suspects about whom the Hetherington-Chalmers Inquiry said there was a prima facie case to answer. The head of Scotland Yard’s War Crimes Unit thought the evidence was strong enough to take to court but the CPS declined to prosecute because of a lack of eyewitness testimony. This case exemplifies the core problem: that the application of normative juridical rules hamstrung the prosecution of even the most egregious Nazi collaborators. However, it also confirms that, in the absence of much historical documentation, war crimes investigations have played a valuable role in unearthing facts about the Latvian Holocaust and local complicity. The chapter looks more broadly at Latvian collaborators, including the odyssey of Konrad Kalejs, who fled to Australia after the war but also briefly sought sanctuary in the UK in the 1990s.

Abstract They [the New Haven authorities] then enquired of her if she knew who it was. She replied, no. They then enquired, do you suspect any one. She said, no. On enquiring again if she had any reason to mistrust any one, on any account, she replied, I know of no one who owes me a grudge except William Grimes. Whilst he lived in this house, over my room, he used to have a great deal of noise there, which disturbed me; I said considerable about it, which was the means of his quitting his shop. He then threatened to be revenged for it. I can think of no other person.

Abstract The year 1931 was also notable for Walton because it saw the start of Frederick Ashton’s ballet to the music of Façade. This, however, was not the first Façadeballet: Gunter Hess had choreographed it for the German Chamber Dance Theatre in Hagen, Westphalia, in September 1929. Hess visited London the next year and is said to have exchanged ideas with Ashton. The music for the ballet was taken from the orchestral suite. Edith Sitwell had refused to give Ashton permission to use the original entertainment as a ballet, though Walton was willing.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the ambivalence of the Romantic familiar essay form towards the city by looking at the two main literary tributaries that fed into it—the current of self-consciously pro-metropolitan prose writing that had been inaugurated by Steele and Addison, and the more anti-commercial tradition of retirement poetry epitomized by William Cowper and the Lake poets. It looks at the way in which Leigh Hunt, William Hazlitt, and Charles Lamb in particular strove to bury their continuing misgivings about the polis as a centre of commercial rapacity and unruly popular politics in celebrations of the city as being, under certain controlled conditions, a precious haven of imaginative activity, personal reminiscence, and literary tradition. Their aim, even if it was never quite articulated as such, was to turn the Romantic periodical essay into a prose medium that was as sensitive as Wordsworth’s poetry to the ravages of recent historical change, while maintaining, in the end, a more progressive and forward-looking attitude to it.

Abstract:
This chapter delves into the dynamics of accusation and investigates what motivated people to denounce others as witches. It recounts how William Meaker of New Haven initiated a slander suit against his neighbor, Thomas Mullenner, for claiming that the defendant had called him a witch in 1657. It also explains how Meaker's case illustrates the important link between witchcraft and interpersonal conflict in early New England. The chapter explains the social context of witchcraft and examines the social situations that gave birth to fears of malefic attack as well as the motives that drove one person to accuse another of black magic. It examines how Puritan colonies closely match dynamics of witch-hunting across the early modern English Atlantic.

Abstract In 1754 Benjamin Franklin was performing his duties as a member of the Pennsylvania Assembly, as one of two deputy postmasters general for North America, and as a delegate to the Albany Congress which adopted his proposals for uniting the colonies against the French. He was also preoccupied with the task of starting a printing business in New Haven, Connecticut. After receiving an honorary master’s degree from Yale the previous autumn, Franklin had determined, as he wrote to William Strahan, his London business associate, that the location offered “a considerable Town in which there is an University, and a Prospect that a Bookseller’s Shop with a Printing House may do pretty well.” Franklin asked Strahan to ship books, stationery, type, and a press modified to meet his specifications.

Abstract:
Abstract Lexical borrowability refers to the ease with which a word or a category of words can be borrowed (van Hout and Muysken 1994:39). Over a century ago William Dwight Whitney (1881) proposed a hierarchy of categories based on borrowability, in which nouns are observed to be most readily borrowed, followed by other parts of speech and then by suffixes, inflections, and sounds. While this hierarchy has been extended and variously revised over the years by scholars such as Haugen (1950), Moravcsik (1978), Muysken (1981), and Singh (1981), the privileged status of nouns has not been seriously challenged (see especially Poplack, Sankoff, and Miller 1988:62-64). Van Hout and Muysken (p. 42) explain this as follows: “one of the primary motivations for lexical borrowing ... is ... to extend the referential potential of a language. Since reference is established primarily through nouns, these are the elements borrowed most easily.”

Abstract:
Abstract On three muggy evenings in the early summer of 1929, thousands of Lancaster Countians packed Franklin and Marshall College’s football stadium to watch their history come alive. To mark the county’s bicentennial, several hundred of their neighbors had staged a “Pageant of Gratitude” for two centuries of God’s blessing. The figure of William Penn opened the pageant, establishing the colony of Pennsylvania as a haven for the oppressed of body and spirit and proclaiming it “destined to be blessed by God.” Hans Herr and his band of Mennonites followed close behind, fleeing the Old World’s persecution to find in Lancaster County “a land of plenty where peace and liberty shall be our portion.” From there the actors traced the county’s growth through the major events of the nation’s history: revolution, civil war, and world war. Modeled after the drama of ancient Greece, the pageant came complete with a narrative chorus of Lancaster’s townships and boroughs and climaxed with a procession of the Fruits of the Soil, of Civilization, and of the Spirit before an Altar of Gratitude.

Abstract:
The analysis of filling processes in pressurized pipelines has been conducted using a steady friction model in the implementation of governing equations. This research is focused on the case of a filling process of a single pipeline without an air valve. Three equations were used to represent the phenomenon: (i) a rigid water column approach, which describes the water movement along the water system; (ii) a piston flow model, which assumes a perpendicular air-water interface to the main direction of the pipe; and (iii) a polytropic model for representing the thermodynamic behaviour of an entrapped air pocket. This research studies the filling processes occurrence using equations of steady and unsteady friction models, where Moody, Wood, Hazen-Williams, and Swamee-Jain equations are analysed. The analysis is applied to a case study of a single pipe of a total length of 1000 m with an internal diameter of 595 mm variation of pressure surges in the implementation of these formulations. Results confirm that there is a minimum discrepancy between steady and unsteady friction models since values of pressure surges pattern are similar.

Abstract:
Cooling water pipe systems are a critical part of a power generation plant. If the cooling water pipe fails, the whole plant may shut down. Due to its high tensile strength steel pipe has been used for cooling water pipe since the beginning of power generation. High density polyethylene (HDPE) has emerged as a reliable and sustainable replacement for steel pipe primarily due to its corrosion resistance. The Hazen-Williams C-factor of steel pipe decreases during the service period because of corrosion and buildup while HDPE pipe has a stable C-factor. The build up inside steel pipe reduces not only the C-factor but also the inside diameter. Steel pipe may fail in the ductile mode as a result of corrosion-related pipe strength reduction combined with the pressure surge related to the reduction of inside diameter. Ductile failure is not observed in the field for HDPE pipe. HDPE pipe is virtually maintenance-free while corrosion protection measures are used for steel pipe. HDPE pipe has advantage over metal pipe in total life cycle costs including material, installation, maintenance, and replacement costs. With these outstanding performance attributes, HDPE pipe has been used in power plants over the last 15 years to transport cooling water pipe for non-safety related applications. In November 2008, Ameren’s Callaway Nuclear Power Plant successfully completed the installation of a 36″ HDPE cooling water pipe system; the first safety related HDPE water pipe in North America for the ASME category 3 cooling pipe application. This safety related PE 4710 cooling water pipe has delivered exceptional performance since its installation.
