Polak, Iva. "Native Apocalypse in Claire G. Coleman’s The Old Lie." Humanities 9, no. 3 (July 28, 2020): 69. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/h9030069.

Full text
Abstract:
Claire G. Coleman’s science fiction novel The Old Lie (2019) evokes the blemished chapters of Australia’s history as the basis of a dystopian futuristic Earth. By using the metaphor of a secular apocalypse (Weaver) wrapped in the form of a space opera, she interrogates historical colonialism on a much larger scale to bring to the fore the distinctive Indigenous experience of Australia’s terra nullius and its horrific offshoots: the Stolen Generations, nuclear tests on Aboriginal land and the treatment of Indigenous war veteran, but this time experienced by the people of the futuristic Earth. Following a brief introduction of the concept of the “Native Apocalypse” (Dillon) in the framework of Indigenous futurism, the paper discusses Coleman’s innovative use of space opera embedded in Wilfred Owen’s famous WWI poem “Dulce et Decorum Est”. The analysis focuses on four allegedly separate stories in the novel which eventually interweave into a single narrative about “the old lie”. In keeping with the twenty-first-century Indigenous futurism, Coleman’s novel does not provide easy answers. Instead, the end brings the reader to the beginning of the novel in the same state of disillusionment as Owen’s lyrical subject.

Abstract:
The technique of deep hypothermia with circulatory arrest has been important in the history of the evolution of cardiac surgery. Wilfred G. Bigelow, working in Toronto in the late 1940s, performed pioneering research on hypothermia, and developed a workable technique of hypothermia in human cardiac surgery.1Based upon Bigelow's experimental premises, F. John Lewis, at the University of Minnesota, also conducted a number of experiments utilizing hypothermia. On September 2, 1942, Lewis operated on a 5-year-old girl with an atrial septal defect under general hypothermia with inflow occlusion. He was assisted by Richard Varco, Mansur Taufic, and C. Walton Lillehei. Rubberized refrigerated blankets were used to cool the patient to 28°C. The septal defect was closed during five and a half minutes of inflow occlusion. This was the world's first successful open operation on the human heart performed under direct vision, and marked the beginning of the era of open heart surgery. Now, as amazing and as primitive as that methodology may seem, those of you who read Life magazine, or watch the Discovery Channel on television, are aware that, in parts of the Soviet Union, a large fraction of today's open heart surgery is performed not using the technique of cardiopulmonary bypass, but rather using the methodology of immersion hypothermia from the 1950s, with surprisingly good results.

Ricks, Brian William. "Closing the Church University in 1894: Embracing or Accommodating Secularized Education." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2012. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3894.

Abstract:
The late 1800s have been noted as a major transitional period for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When the beleaguered pioneers first arrived in Utah they were isolated from the influence and expectations of the United States. During that time, leaders of the Church became influential in every aspect of life in Utah. By the end of the nineteenth century, however, the period of isolation had come to an end. Nationally, the social norms had changed and religion was expected to stay in the churches and out of politics. Church leaders were faced with serious questions regarding what policies and practices could be altered without betraying doctrines and principles of the gospel. Education was at the forefront of this tension in Utah. Members of the Church tried to hold on to an integrated approach to education that incorporated both the spiritual and the secular. Others, however, adamantly opposed such an approach in public schools. In 1892, the First Presidency announced a new educational institution that would become the administrative head of all Church schools: The University of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Willard Young became the President and James Talmage was placed over the science department. Talmage traveled to Europe to purchase the best scientific equipment. With the scientific apparatus and a new building the leaders of the Church hoped to persuade the youth of the Church to obtain higher education at home rather than traveling east to attend secularized universities. The Church's first private university seemed destined to become a major influence in Utah education. However, after one successful semester, President Woodruff closed the school and donated over sixty thousand dollars to the University of Utah. The following research explores the history of the Church University and the circumstances surrounding its closure. The paper shows how a combination of the financial panic of 1893, the effort to obtain statehood, and a rare opportunity to quietly gain influence at the University of Utah factored into the decision to close the Church's first private university.

Andil, Jan. "Motiv "noci" u Jana od Kříže a v současné spiritualitě." Master's thesis, 2018. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-390318.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the theme of the dark night in the work of St. John of the Cross and its influence on the formation of contemporary spiritual authors. Firstly, it focuses on the Spanish Carmelite mystic, John of the Cross social and biographical facts. These provide background to John's spiritual formation and without them the symbol of the dark night loses its historical context. This is followed by a list and brief description of the key works of John of the Cross. Of these texts, the dark night motif is dealt with in "Ascent of Mount Carmel" and "Dark Night," which constitute two aspects of a single journey leading to union with God. We encounter the dark night motive itself in the third chapter. First, we look at the dark night as described by John from the Cross. Then we focus on the symbolism of the dark night in the saint's work, its articulation and outcome. The last chapter introduces us to the view of contemporary spiritual authors, namely Thomas H. Greene, Thomas Halik, Iain Matthew, Gerald G. May, and Wilfrid Stinissen on the dark night theme.

Abstract:
How can the new dynamic in European integration politics during the second half of the 1980’s be explained? What were the driving forces behind the Single European Act, the achievement of the Single Market, the Schengen agreement, the EC’s expansion to the south, and the new steps towards Monetary Union and the Common Foreign and Security Policy? In this book, using numerous discoveries from the archives, historians from 12 countries show how the European Community reacted to the challenges of globalisation and the reform initiatives by Mikhail Gorbachev. In doing so, they write a new chapter in the history of European integration: the emergence of the European Union.
