Musto, Joseph C., and Nicholas R. Konkle. "Computation of Member Stiffness in the Design of Bolted Joints." Journal of Mechanical Design 128, no. 6 (December 13, 2005): 1357–60. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/1.2338578.

Abstract:
In designing bolted connections in machinery applications, it is necessary to estimate the stiffness of the clamped members. The method of Wileman et al. (Wileman, J., Choudhury, M., and Green, I., 1991, ASME J. of Mech. Des., 113, pp. 432–437) has become a standard approach to estimating the member stiffness. In this method, finite element studies are used to estimate the stiffness of the clamped members of a single material type. In this paper, the studies performed by Wileman et al. (Wileman, J., Choudhury, M., and Green, I., 1991, ASME J. of Mech. Des., 113, pp. 432–437) are extended to include the case where the clamped members are of different material types. Results for a steel/aluminum joint are presented in detail, and a generalized technique for estimating the member stiffness for any material combination is derived. The method developed in this brief is shown to provide accurate estimates of member stiffness over a range of aspect ratios and joint compositions.

WU, SHIPHER. "Discovery of the genus Pseudepione Inoue, 1943 in Taiwan, with description of a new species (Lepidoptera: Geometridae: Ennominae)." Zootaxa 4486, no. 1 (September 26, 2018): 96. http://dx.doi.org/10.11646/zootaxa.4486.1.10.

Full text
Abstract:
The genus Pseudepione Inoue, 1943 is a small geometrid taxon comprising only two species, the typo species P. magnaria (Wileman, 1911) and P. shiraii Inoue, 1943. They are known to distribute in Japan (Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku), south and central Korea (Choi 2012; Choi & An 2010; Jung & Oh 2012), the former species was also reported in Jiangxi of China (Fang 2003). The genus seems to be univoltine since adults can only be found in the autumn season (Wileman 1911; Inoue 1943, 1982; Parsons et al. 1999; Kim & Beljaev 2001; Sato 2011; Choi 2012). The combination of the absence of forewing fovea, tuft of scales of third abdominal sternite, gnathos, socii and cormata is quite unique in Ennominae. So far, the phylogenetic affinity of Pseudepione is unclear since the closely related genus has never been proposed and still no morphological or molecular phylogenetic studies, i.e. Beljaev (2006a; 2006b; 2016), Sihvonen (2011), Yamamoto & Sota (2007), Jiang et al. (2017), considering the palaearctic subfamily or tribal levels sampled this genus. The dense fundamental surveys conducted in recent 7 years in the cloud forests of Taiwan acquire the opportunity to collect this genus new to Taiwan. After comparing the Taiwanese specimens with the known two species in both sexes, it’s clear the Taiwanese specimens are a distinct species needed to be described in the present study.

Abstract:
AbstractLarvae of the Manchurian catalpa shoot borer Sinomphisa plagialis (Wileman) mainly damaged young shoots of Manchurian catalpa (Catalpa bungei) and ovate catalpa (Catalpa ovata). The typical symptom was production of spindle galls on damaged parts of shoots or branches, usually confined to seedlings, vigorously growing shoots, twigs and branches, as well as young trees below 3 m in height. Feeding occurred from early April to late October. In the Jiaodong peninsula, where there were one to two generations in a year, whereas in the mountainous area of central and southern Shandong, there were always two generations. Larvae had five instars. The longevity of adults was 3–11 days; eggs of the summer generation 7–9 days, overwintering generation 4–6 days; larvae of the summer generation 42–48 days; pupae of the summer generation 13–16 days, of the overwintering generation 22–26 days. Most overwintered in the pith as fifth instar larvae.

Abstract:
The primary structure of polypeptides is converted to their final tertiary and quaternary structure by sequential maturation steps, and the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) provides the environment for the polypeptides to attain their proper 3-dimensional architecture. Proteins that misfold or fail to oligomerize with their partners (Chen et al., 1998; Wileman et al., 1990) are quickly degraded, as unfolded or unassembled proteins could interfere with normal cellular function. Retrotranslocation is the process by which terminally misfolded or unassembled ER proteins are translocated back into the cytosol for degradation mediated by the proteasomal machinery. Increasing amounts of evidence now support the fact that the same translocon pore that is involved in the translocation of polypeptides into the ER is also used for the retrotranslocation process. But questions, like how the misfolded proteins are recognized and targeted to the translocon pore, whether the process requires energy, and what pulls the polypeptides as they emerge out of the pore into the cytoplasm, remain to be elucidated. This review addresses our current knowledge about the retrotranslocation process.

Abstract:
Lithosiini genera of the Asura / Miltochrista generic complex related to Barsine Walker, 1854 sensu lato and Asura Walker, 1854 are overviewed. Barsine is considered to be a group having such an autapomorphic feature as a basal saccular process of valva only. Many species without this process are separated to the diverse and species-rich genus Ammatho stat. nov., which is subdivided here into eight subgenera including Idopterum Hampson, 1894 downgraded here to a subgenus level, and six new subgenera: Ammathella Volynkin, subgen. nov., Composine Volynkin, subgen. nov., Striatella Volynkin & Huang, subgen. nov., Conicornuta Volynkin, subgen. nov., Delineatia Volynkin & Huang, subgen. nov. and Rugosine Volynkin, subgen. nov. A number of groups of species considered previously by various authors as members of Barsine are erected here to 20 new genera and four subgenera: Ovipennis (Barsipennis) Volynkin, subgen. nov., Ovipennis (Coccinigripennis) Volynkin & Huang, subgen. nov., Barsura (Tenebrasura) Volynkin, subgen. nov., Argentosine Volynkin, gen. nov., Esmasura Volynkin & Huang, gen. nov., Matsumursine Volynkin & Huang, gen. nov., Floridasura Volynkin, gen. nov., Fossia Volynkin, Ivanova & Huang, gen. nov., Wittasura Volynkin, gen. nov., Disparsine Volynkin, gen. nov., Moorasura Volynkin & Huang, gen. nov., Sarbine Volynkin, gen. nov., Sarbine (Processine) Volynkin, subgen. nov., Hampsonascia Volynkin, gen. nov., Cernysura Volynkin, gen. nov., Barsilene Volynkin & Huang, gen. nov., Nanarsine Volynkin, gen. nov., Amphisine Volynkin, gen. nov., Karolia Volynkin, gen. nov., Niveutane Volynkin, gen. nov., Rubrindiania Volynkin & Huang, gen. nov., Barsaurea Volynkin & Huang, gen. nov., Integrivalvia Volynkin & Huang, gen. nov. and Aberrasine Volynkin & Huang, gen. nov. The genus Nebulene Volynkin & Černý is downgraded to a subspecies of Ovipennis. The genus Eutane Walker, 1854 is downgraded to a subspecies of Asura. The genera Miltasura Roepke, 1946 and Gymnasura Hampson, 1900 are synonymised here with Cyme Felder, 1861 and Asura respectively. The genera Asuropsis Matsumura, 1927, Neasuroides Matsumura, 1927 and Asuridoides Daniel, 1951 are synonymised with Miltochrista Hübner, [1819]. Other six new synonyms are established: Barsine pardalis (Mell, 1922) = Barsine miranda Kishida & Wang, 2017, syn. nov., Barsine striata striata (Bremer & Grey, 1852) = Miltochrista quelparta Okamota, 1924, syn. nov., Floridasura tricolor (Wileman, 1910) = Barsine coccinea Moore, 1886, syn. nov., Disasuridia metaphaea (Hampson, 1900) = Disasuridia flava Fang, 1991, syn. nov., Aberrasine aberrans aberrans (Butler, 1877) = Miltochrista decussata (Moore, 1877), syn. nov. and Cabarda nigripuncta (Wileman & South, 1919) = Asura lunilinea Schaus, 1922, syn. nov. In addition, it is stated that Miltochrista quadrifasciata Rothschild, 1913 described from New Guinea and currently belonging to the genus Cyme (a junior synonym of Cyme sexualis (Felder, 1864)) is an invalid name, being a secondary junior homonym (homonym nov.) of Cyme quadrifasciata (Rothschild, 1913), comb. nov. described from Sulawesi. A full check-list of members of the Asura / Miltochrista generic complex with 370 new combinations is present.

Abstract:
The genus Thysanoptyx Hampson, 1894 is a member of the subtribe Lithosiina, tribe Lithosiini (Arctiinae). It was described as a monotypic genus for Lithosia tetragona Walker, 1854 from Silhet [Sylhet], [Bangladesh].Hampson (1900) treated Thysanoptyx as a synonym of Eilema Hübner. Daniel (1954) placed it under Lithosia Fabricius, whereas Birket-Smith (1965) treated it as a junior subjective synonym of Teulisna Walker. Later, Kishida (1993) considered Thysanoptyx Hampson as a valid genus. Fang (2000) reported four species from China: Thysanoptyx tetragona (Walker, 1854), T. fimbriata (Leech, 1890), T. signata (Walker, 1854), and T. brevimacula (Alphéraky, 1897). However, the male genitalia of T. tetragona figured by Fang (2000) belong to a probably new species (Singh, pers. obs.). Holloway (2001) considered four species, Thysanoptyx tetragona, T. oblonga (Butler, 1877), T. sordida (Butler, 1881), and T. incurvata Wileman & West, 1928 from Oriental region. Kirti & Singh (2015) described a new species, T. pseudotetragona Joshi, Singh & Kirti from South India (Kerala) and reported T. incurvata for the first time from India. However, the new reporting of T. incurvata seems to be incorrect (see the remark below). Recently, Volynkin & Dubatolov (2017) subdivided Thysanoptyx into five species groups: tetragona species group, oblonga species group, sordida species group, signata species group, and fimbriata species group, with the description of two new species: T. indosinica Volynkin & Dubatolov, 2017 from Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam and T. mirifica Volynkin & Dubatolov, 2017 from Vietnam. At present the genus comprises 10 valid species distributed from China, Taiwan to India and South East Asia.

Abstract:
This edition of the journal sees the launch of a new regular trainee-orientated section. Over the course of a rolling five-year cycle we will be publishing a series of articles which will cover the ‘Emergency Presentations’, ‘The Top 20 Common Medical Presentations’, ‘Other Important Presentations’ and ‘Practical Procedures’ outlined in the curriculum for Acute Internal Medicine 2009. Articles will take the form of a problem-based review that uses a brief clinical case (real or fictional) and its development to illustrate the assessment, differential diagnosis and management of the common presentations to Acute Medicine. We hope these reviews will highlight recent evidence-based guidelines and provide readers with clinically useful ‘pearls and pitfalls’ from specialist experience that can be easily applied to future practice. Although many of these reviews will be commissioned directly by the editors of the journal, if you do have a particular interest in producing a review relating to a specific curriculum topic, please contact me at tomheaps@hotmail.co.uk. Similarly, I would welcome any early feedback relating to the content and format of this new journal section. This edition features reviews of the management of GI bleeding and paraplegia which I hope will be of interest to readers of various levels of seniority. Dr Joe Wileman has also produced a ‘Journal Watch’ section, which we plan to repeat in future editions (again contact me directly if you are interested in undertaking this for a future edition) and there is a ‘trainee update’ from Alice Miller.

Full text
Abstract:
The T cell antigen receptor (TCR) is an oligomeric protein complex made from at least six different integral membrane proteins (alpha beta gamma delta epsilon and zeta). The TCR is assembled in the ER of T cells, and correct assembly is required for transport to the cell surface. Single subunits and partial receptor complexes are retained in the ER where TCR alpha, beta, and CD3 delta chains are degraded selectively. The information required for the ER degradation of the TCR beta chain is confined to the membrane anchor of the protein (Wileman et al., 1990c; Bonifacino et al., 1990b). In this study we show that the rapid degradation of the TCR beta chain is inhibited when it assembles with single CD3 gamma, delta, or epsilon subunits in the ER, and have started to define the role played by transmembrane anchors, and receptor ectodomains, in the masking proteolytic targeting information. Acidic residues within the membrane spanning domains of CD3 subunits were essential for binding to the TCR beta chain. TCR beta chains and CD3 subunits therefore interact via transmembrane domains. However, when sites of binding were restricted to the membrane anchor of the TCR beta chain, stabilization by CD3 subunits was markedly reduced. Interactions between membrane spanning domains were not, therefore, sufficient for the protection of the beta chain from ER proteolysis. The presence of the C beta domain, containing the first 150 amino acids of the TCR ectodomain, greatly increased the stability of complexes formed in the ER. For assembly with CD3 epsilon, stability was further enhanced by the V beta amino acids. The results showed that the efficient neutralization of transmembrane proteolytic targeting information required associations between membrane spanning domains and the presence of receptor ectodomains. Interactions between receptor ectodomains may slow the dissociation of CD3 subunits from the beta chain and prolong the masking of transmembrane targeting information. In addition, the close proximity of TCR and CD3 ectodomains within the ER may provide steric protection from the action of proteases within the ER lumen.

ABSTRACTClassroom action research with the theme “Improving the Practical Ability of Karawitan in Surakarta Style II” on the second semester students of the ISI Surakarta Karawitan Department is an effort to improve the literacy practice skills for second semester students of Class C Karawitan. applied in karawitan practice courses. The application of this learning model is in its efforts to handle students who encounter difficulties and delays in the process of learning musical practices so that they can quickly follow other friends. In order to accelerate and succeed in the learning process of musical practice, especially in the transfer of twists and turns, the drill learning method is used. Cengkok learning, especially wiledan, which is weighty and valid in musical society and can be mastered precisely can only be done by drill learning, which is to practice repeatedly and continuously until the wiledan is truly mastered. This study aims and enhances the ability of musical practice for students of the Surakarta II style Karawitan lecture participants, at least in that class of students the average musical ability is good. It is hoped that the success of this learning model can become a reference for karawitan practice models and other classes.

Tekst jest omówieniem książki Davida Wilesa Theatre and Citizenship: the History of a Practice (Cambridge 2011), której lektura inspiruje autora do rozważań dotyczących historycznego i aktualnego znaczenia praktyki teatralnej dla propagowania idei obywatelskich.

Abstract:
Literature on innovation emphasises the potential for organisations to collaborate and network instead of carrying out innovation individually. Integrating suppliers, customers and other organisations into the innovation process is perceived as a key to success in innovation management (Chesbrough, 2003). Furthermore, the management of the initial phase of the innovation process has proven vital to the overall innovation success (Kim and Wilemon, 2002a,b). Although the merits of network-based innovations are widely acknowledged, the managerial challenges of the initial integration of external organisations in an innovation network are somewhat neglected in the literature. The aim of this paper is hence to address the challenges that an organisation faces when integrating a plurality of suppliers, customers and other organisations into the Fuzzy Front End of the innovation process.

Abstract:
This class action research was conducted to improve the ability of students in kendangan ciblon irama dadi in Karawitan Surakarta II. The mastery of kendangan ciblon irama dadi is considered very important for it is the foundation for kendangan ciblon irama wiled in the form of inggah ladrang, kethuk 4, and kethuk 8 in the next course. Kendangan ciblon irama dadithat are emphasized are gambyongan ciblon which has a high complexity. Therefore,it needs more attention. So far, there are still many problems encountered in the learning process of the course, especially in mastering kendangan ciblonduring the middle semester, namely semester III, IV, IV. The problems include the scheme of kendangan, sekaran ciblongambyongan and wiledan. It may happen because most sudents do not master well the ciblon irama dadi at the second semester. It needs an appropriate learning method. In order to increase the students’ abilities in kendangan ciblon irama dadi semester II, during this time, the method of speech, drill and demonstration seem insufficient to overcome the problem, so that it is necessary to use another method namely the Stad Type Cooperative Learning Model. This method is in fact very effective and useful to improve the students’ practical skills. This is indicated by an increase in group learning activities and a more live class and the good student achievement. Keywords: learning, ability, ciblon

Abstract:
PART I of this two-part volume is a reprint of Crutchfield and Zellner's pioneering work on the economic theory of regulation in marine resources (with special reference to the Pacific Halibut fishery), first published in 1962 by the U.S. Department of the Interior. The original publication quickly went out of print and, although some individual analyses from the study were published in academic journals, the volume in its entirety was not reprinted, and thus has been unavailable to most people. The reprint of the original study is followed in Part 2 with a commentary, where leading contemporary resource and environmental economists comment on the original study's relation to general developments in the field since. Commentaries are made by David Zilberman (University of California, Berkeley), Anthony Scott (University of British Columbia), James E. Wilen (University of California, Davis) and Frances R. Homans (University of Minnesota). The volume concludes with a recent history of the International Pacific Halibut Conservation Program by Donald McCaughran, which includes the current impact of conservation measures and policy recommendations originally made by Crutchfield and Zellner.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to characterize in detail 25 sour cherry cultivars and provide data on their industrial processing into high-quality sour cherry cloudy juices (ScCJ). Anthocyanin composition was identified and quantified by LC-PDA-ESI-MS QTof, UPLC-PDA. Kinetic degradation (k × 103, t1/2, D value) and color (CIE La*b*) were measured before and after 190 days of storage at 4 °C and 30 °C. A total of five anthocyanins, four cyanidins (-3-O-sophoroside, -3-O-glucosyl-rutinoside, -3-O-glucoside, and -3-O-rutinoside) and one peonidin-3-O-rutinoside were detected across all investigated juices. Total anthocyanin content ranged from ~590 to ~1160 mg/L of juice, with the highest levels in Skierka, Nagy Erdigymulscu, Wilena, Wiblek, and Safir cvs., and the lowest in Dradem and Nanaones. During 190 days of storage a significant change was observed in the content of anthocyanins. Their degradation depended rather on the storage conditions (time and temperature) than on the type of anthocyanin compounds present in the ScCJ. Half-life values of ScCJ ranged from 64.7 to 188.5 days at 4 °C and from 45.9 to 112.40 days at 30 °C. Sample redness changed more rapidly than yellowness or lightness and Chroma or hue angel. These results may be useful for the juice industry and serve as a starting point for the development of tasty sour cherry juices with high levels of bioactive compounds.

Abstract:
This study empirically compares the hedging performances of the newly listed Japanese yen (JPY) and European euro (EUR) currency futures in the KRX relative to that of the us dollar (USD) currency futures. For this purpose, assuming the situation of foreign-asset investment the minimum variance hedging models based on OLS and ECM are compared with a simple 1: 1 hedge. The difference between previous studies and this one is in that the latter uses various kinds of hedging performance measures and analyzes the hedging performances by different hedging horizon. According to the empirical results, the USD currency futures outperforms the JPY and EUR currency futures when considering the risk only. However, the results are reversed wilen incorporating the return as well as the risk. With respect to the comparative advantages among hedging types, the ECM-hedge turns out to be better than the others for evaluating the risk only, and the 1: 1 hedge proves to be superior to the others when considering both of the return and risk aspects. Based on the risk-reduction aspect. the hedging performances are gradually improving as the length of hedging period increases, while they deteriorate for considering both the return and risk aspects.

Full text
Abstract:
Current trends in assessment, no longer based on the view that language learning entails a passive accumulation of skills, have led to the increasingly more common use of assessment procedures that differ quite drastically from standardized norm-referenced measures of language proficiency (Calfee and Hiebert 1991, Calfee and Perfumo 1993, Gifford and O'Connor 1991). Increasing criticism of standardized tests, especially in light of current educational reform movements, has also brought into question the value of other indirect approaches to assessment (Clay 1990, Cohen 1994, Damico 1992, Haladyana 1992, Oller 1992, Pikulski 1990, Worthen 1993). Additionally, interest groups representing both linguistically and culturally diverse students and students with special education needs have called for a change in our approaches to assessment. The goal is to ensure equity in educational opportunities and to strive toward educational excellence for all students (Council of Chief State School Officers 1992, Fradd, McGee and Wilen 1994, Hamayan and Damico 1991, LaCelle-Peterson and Rivera 1994). Although some researchers suggest that it is false to assume that alternative assessment approaches automatically ensure equity for diverse populations (Darling-Hammond 1994), these approaches nonetheless provide a wealth of information which must minimally serve as a context for a more valid interpretation of all standardized test results. In a more central capacity, information from these alternative assessment procedures can constitute the sole basis for much educational and instructional decision-making (Damico 1992).
