Abstract:
In designing bolted connections in machinery applications, it is necessary to estimate the stiffness of the clamped members. The method of Wileman et al. (Wileman, J., Choudhury, M., and Green, I., 1991, ASME J. of Mech. Des., 113, pp. 432–437) has become a standard approach to estimating the member stiffness. In this method, finite element studies are used to estimate the stiffness of the clamped members of a single material type. In this paper, the studies performed by Wileman et al. (Wileman, J., Choudhury, M., and Green, I., 1991, ASME J. of Mech. Des., 113, pp. 432–437) are extended to include the case where the clamped members are of different material types. Results for a steel/aluminum joint are presented in detail, and a generalized technique for estimating the member stiffness for any material combination is derived. The method developed in this brief is shown to provide accurate estimates of member stiffness over a range of aspect ratios and joint compositions.

WU, SHIPHER. "Discovery of the genus Pseudepione Inoue, 1943 in Taiwan, with description of a new species (Lepidoptera: Geometridae: Ennominae)." Zootaxa 4486, no. 1 (September 26, 2018): 96. http://dx.doi.org/10.11646/zootaxa.4486.1.10.

Full text
Abstract:
The genus Pseudepione Inoue, 1943 is a small geometrid taxon comprising only two species, the typo species P. magnaria (Wileman, 1911) and P. shiraii Inoue, 1943. They are known to distribute in Japan (Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku), south and central Korea (Choi 2012; Choi & An 2010; Jung & Oh 2012), the former species was also reported in Jiangxi of China (Fang 2003). The genus seems to be univoltine since adults can only be found in the autumn season (Wileman 1911; Inoue 1943, 1982; Parsons et al. 1999; Kim & Beljaev 2001; Sato 2011; Choi 2012). The combination of the absence of forewing fovea, tuft of scales of third abdominal sternite, gnathos, socii and cormata is quite unique in Ennominae. So far, the phylogenetic affinity of Pseudepione is unclear since the closely related genus has never been proposed and still no morphological or molecular phylogenetic studies, i.e. Beljaev (2006a; 2006b; 2016), Sihvonen (2011), Yamamoto & Sota (2007), Jiang et al. (2017), considering the palaearctic subfamily or tribal levels sampled this genus. The dense fundamental surveys conducted in recent 7 years in the cloud forests of Taiwan acquire the opportunity to collect this genus new to Taiwan. After comparing the Taiwanese specimens with the known two species in both sexes, it’s clear the Taiwanese specimens are a distinct species needed to be described in the present study.

Abstract:
This study investigated whether a predictive tool developed by authors in the United States (Konvalina, Stephens and Wileman) could be used with University students in Australia (in particular the Australian Capital Territory) to predict their success in first year University computing courses. It also investigated the effect of demographic and past academic factors in conjunction with, and instead of the predictive test. The study examined differences in performance between male/female students, English as a Second Language (ESL)/non-ESL students and full-time/part-time students. It also examined the effect of all the above factors on the continuing success of students in the course. While significant differences in first-time performance were found between ESL and non- ESL students, no differences were found between the other pairings. No differences were found between any of the groups in the continuing success in the course. The KSW Test, while being an indicator of first year success, was not a strong enough model to be able to be used as a predictive tool. The demographic and previous academic data from students recently at High School, in particular, the Tertiary Entrance Score, level of mathematics studied, and previous computing study, were found to be more useful as an indicator of success in fust year, explaining 53% of the variation in h a 1 unit score. In addition, 67% of the variation in continuing success in their course was also explained by the Tertiary Entrance Score, ASAT verbal and ASAT quantitative scores.

Cleven, Nathan R. "Role of Dolomite Content on the Mechanical Strength and Failure-Mechanisms in Dolomite-Limestone Composites." 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/1112.

Full text
Abstract:
Variably dolomitized limestone samples from the Rundle Group in Western Alberta, Canada were deformed under a variety of confining pressures and at room temperature in a triaxial rock press. The aim of this research is to establish the mechanical behaviour and brittle constitutive laws of limestone and dolomite composites. This data can then be used to develop strength profiles of thrust faults in the Rocky Mountain Fold and Thrust Belt. For example, many of the thrust faults in the Canadian Foreland are composed of limestone–dolomite composites, yet the mechanical properties of these composites remain unknown. Sample protoliths were selected for their similar grain sizes and grain size distributions, low porosity and low silica content in order to best examine relationships between these parameters and the distribution of strain between the dolomite and calcite. This study shows that increasing dolomite content correlates to an increase in strength at low and medium confining pressures. At high confining pressures, distributed brittle deformation adds complexities that are attributed to textural controls. Microstructural analysis of deformed samples shows that at approximately thirty to forty-five weight percent dolomite is interconnected via a dolomite grain network that provides a load-bearing capacity to the dolomite. This load-bearing capacity correlates to dramatic jumps in the strength of dolomite–limestone composites observed with increasing confining pressures. Inherent weaknesses in calcite grains such as twin planes and cleavage intersections are exploited by fractures resulting in reduced peak strengths of calcite-rich composites. Calcite generally absorbs strain and distributes it into finer spaced fracture networks than in dolomite. In dolomitized rock that still contains calcite cleavage within dolomite is not exploited, rather transgranular cracks break dolomite down into irregular and angular particles. At near pure dolomite content and at high confining pressure dolomite will fracture and disaggregate along cleavage. Comminuted dolomite grains commonly show a larger distribution of sizes and have more irregular shapes than contiguous comminuted calcite grains. Comminuted calcite particles are commonly much smaller than comminuted dolomite grains and show more regular shapes and an even grain size distribution.

The morphological phenotypic characters involving sexual selection but with highly individual variability are likely to challenge the prezygotic isolating mechanism driven by differentiation of mechanical structures. This kind of characters may also puzzle species identification and taxonomy. Therefore clarifying the correlation between the phenotypic variability and biological/non-biological factors becomes necessary in order to understand the role of this phenomenon under natural selection and sexual selection. The Syntomini represents one of the few lepidopterous groups that exhibit highly individual variability in both wing pattern and reproductive structures. The evolutionary and taxonomic significance of this phenomenon, however, has never been studied using modern methods although it has been documented for long. In order to test several hypotheses relevant to phenotypic variability, the present study focuses the phylogenetic relationship of Amata wilemani Rothschild, 1914, a subalpine moth species with extremely high variability in wing coloration and genitalia. The phylogenetic relationship between the three color morphs of A. wilemani and 38 Syntomini species plus 2 Lithosiinae outgroups was reconstructed using fragments of COI, EF1a and 28S. All color morphs of A. wilemani were recovered to form a monophyletic group under all data partitioning strategies with Amata formosensis (Wileman, 1928) or its closely related species in China as the potential sister group. The result of gene network analysis suggests low divergence between haplotypes of A. wilemani. Because no correlation between color morphs, phenology, geographical distribution, altitudinal gradient, and genitalic morphlogy was detected, it is concluded that A. wilemani should be regarded as a single species with high phenotypic variability, and this may suggest existence of intraspecific competition. The present study also found that Amata karapinensis (Strand, 1915), which was synonymized with A. wilemani by previous authors, should be revived. The incongruence between the phylogenetic relationships based on morphological and molecular characters shows a need of a comprehensive phylogenetic study of this highly diverse group.
