Newell-Fugate, Annie Elizabeth. "The effects of two formulations of deslorelin on the reproduction of male African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus)." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/30381.

Full text
Abstract:
The African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) is the second most endangered carnivore in Africa. Although several high-profile endangered species are imperiled due to poor fertility, inadequate genetic diversity, and a reliance on specific niches, the wild dog is threatened by decreasing land space and human hunting practices. Wild dogs are highly fertile with an average litter size of nine at De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Centre. Wild dog males have 3 million to 900 million sperm per ejaculate and 45-75% progressive motility during the breeding season. Wild dogs released into small nature reserves in South Africa experience increased survival rates due to sizeable litters, abundant prey, and increased hunting success along fence lines. Furthermore, the current demand for captive-bred wild dogs is low due to lack of demand by overseas zoos and the inability of nature reserves to accommodate more dogs. Long-acting GnRH analogues have been used for fertility control in many wildlife species. However, dosing and efficacy differ among species and individual animals. This study assessed the efficacy of the GnRH analogue, deslorelin, on reproductive parameters of male African wild dogs. Seasonal effects on reproduction were also evaluated. Captive male African wild dogs housed at the De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Centre were administered either a 4.7 mg deslorelin implant (Suprelorin,® Peptech Animal Health (Pty) Ltd, Sydney, Australia; n = 10), an experimental 9.4 mg deslorelin injection (n = 11) or a placebo injection (n = 6). Treatment was administered during the non-breeding season (Month 0), and dogs were assessed at Months 3, 5, 6, and 7. Reproductive parameters evaluated before and after treatment included: serum testosterone, testicular and prostatic volume, and semen quality. Serum testosterone was assessed with a previously validated double antibody DSL testosterone radioimmunoassay kit (Diagnostic Systems Laboratories, Inc, Webster, TX). Testicular volume was calculated from testicular dimensions measured with a calliper and prostatic volume from dimensions obtained by trans-cutaneous ultrasound. Data were analyzed with ANOVA. Although the 4.7 mg deslorelin implant was safe for use in male wild dogs, there was wide variation in efficacy among dogs. The serum testosterone of implant dogs did not decrease to baseline after treatment and only half the dogs administered an implant became azoospermic post-treatment. The experimental long-acting deslorelin injection was ineffective for contraception of male African wild dogs. All three groups of dogs experienced an improvement in reproductive parameters during the months of February through May, the rainy season in northern South Africa and the period during which female African wild dogs enter oestrus, suggesting that a breeding season not only exists in the female African dog but also in the male. Testis and prostatic volume increased, serum testosterone concentrations and semen quality improved during that time of year. Further studies of deslorelin in male wild dogs are warranted to determine the appropriate dose, pay-out pattern, delivery method, and season of delivery necessary for adequate contraception in this species.

Abstract:
Both overtly and subtly, the early twentieth century American author Willa Cather (1873-1947) gives her readers a sense of a spiritual realm in the world of her novels. '!'his study explores Cather's changing conceptions of spirituality and ways_in which she portrays them in three of her novels. I propose that though Cather is seldom considered a modernist, her interest in spirituality parallels Virginia Woolf's interest in moments of heightened consciousness, and that she invented ways to express ineffable connections with a spiritual dimension of life. In 0 Pioneers! (1913), Cather proposes that those who use their intuition to express themselves recognize and unite with a spiritual current that runs underneath and through all experience and natural phenomena. In The Professor's House (1925), Cather questions whether union with the spiritual current can endure, and doubts the ultimate value of such a union. In Death Comes for the Archbishop (1927), she suggests that recognition of this spiritual current comes and goes, and resigns herself to the need for spiritual traditions, such as Catholicism, to be able to sustain belief in the current, to sense it, and to value a union with it. All her life, Cather searched for spiritual meaning, expressed in her interest in the philosopher Henri Bergson, in connections between art and religion, and in the Episcopal Church. Cather's conception of spirituality changes, but the spiritual dimension of her novels commonly includes a sense of space, place, transcendence and ambiguity. Because the spiritual realm is beyond words, Cather uses juxtaposition and repetition to create an expansive, imaginative space that resonates silently through her stories. Powerful landscapes express the spiritual realm, and enhance characters' ability to recognize it. Awareness of this realm allows characters to transcend mental and cultural barriers and experience a common consciousness. Cather embraces darkness and contradictions as part of the spiritual realm, resulting in powerful ambiguities. As her spiritual vision changes during her life from exuberant to deeply reserved, these ambiguities become increasingly highlighted in her novels.

Abstract:
In 2007 I completed a meandering two-year pilgrimage on foot across Sydney, from my home in urban Rozelle to suburban Dundas, where I grew up. In 2011 I swam home. Discombobulated and increasingly remote from the local at a time of ever-faster global connectivity, I had felt the need to re-acquaint myself with my ‘country’, the seemingly bland ‘relaxed and comfortable’ mortgage-belt municipalities of the Parramatta River corridor. Walking west from the city via Victoria Road I immersed myself in a suburbia laced with three generations of my family, seeking out strands of lost and lesser-known cultural fabric. Whilst acknowledging the flâneur and the work of more recent walking artists, my path echoed increasingly with antipodean walking traditions: those of aboriginal people, early settlers, artists and swagmen. At the core of my journey lay a quest for memories I felt that I should, but did not, possess. This latency, which also has infused my photo-based studio work, is pursued, teased out and examined in the chapters which follow. In the midst of a golden age of plenitude here in the South (when most of us lack only time) I have demonstrated, to myself at least, that by slowing to a walking pace and immersing oneself physically in local place, by following one’s nose hither and thither, it is possible to re-enchant one’s locale, one’s ‘country’. Wild Ryde is a municipal embroidery, an idiosyncratic local emotional history. Born of six years’ practice-based creative research and experimentation, the dissertation is my means of making home, and an artwork in its own right.

Abstract:
WILD EMBRACE is a collection of poetry that explores the themes of abuse, survival, and fragility. The speaker of these poems, older and distanced from the abuse, asks what it means to be a survivor, and explores our obligation of compassion that, as human beings, we owe one another. While much of the work in this collection is rooted in personal experience, it is not intended to be read as memoir or autobiography. Many of these poems may have begun as lived experience, but between memory, the transcription of memory, and their final form on the printed page, they have been run through a variety of embellishment, artistic license, and shifting narrative forms. The poems in this collection attempt to capture a heightened emotional truth that can’t be attained by mere reporting of fact. WILD EMBRACE sifts through the ashes of suffering and loss, and constructs a mythology as personal as it is collective.

Abstract:
The Wild Beasts springs from my desire to thank my ever-expanding queer chosen family and mentors for their strength. Working through the often violent and othering aspects of the lens and photographic histories I create floral portraits responding to each person’s being and our relationship. Using the 19th century, 8x10 large format view camera—the same used by colonialists and ethnographers to “capture” the divinity of Nature—I erect each as a traditional still life studio setup at the threshold between the natural world and that constructed by humans. These environments speak both to the character of each friend and also to the use of Nature against queer people in most legal systems across the planet. We are deemed unnatural and made criminals through inequitable semantics. The 8x10 negative becomes a portrait, a darkroom contact print that is gifted to each of The Wild Beasts, an intimate artifact of my gratitude. At these borders I lash at the histories of oppression, remaking these lineages and tools into spaces for empathy, tenderness, and love.

Emily Dickinson's seclusion is explored in light of her family's strange entanglement with the Todds. Austin Dickinson's affair with Mabel Loomis Todd, and the effect on the lives of Susan Dickinson, Lavinia Dickinson, Martha Dickinson Bianchi, David Todd, and Millicent Todd Bingham, provide a steamy context for the posthumous publication of Emily Dickinson's poetry. The screenplay includes original music (inspired by the dashes and an old hymn) for two poems: "Wild Nightsl Wild Nights!" and "Better - than Music!" Also included are visualizations of many of Dickinson's images, including "circumference," "Eden," "the bee," and "immortality."

Abstract:
Chapter is an exploration of the meanings which may underly the title of this novel. I have tried initially to establish what kind of "expedition" is undertaken, and have come to the conclusion that "expedition" has a multidimensional meaning, that it implies a search, an expedition into different things: an expedition to the city of rose-quartz; the slave woman's expeditions from the baobab tree and back; an inner expedition to gain self-knowledge; an expedition into womanhood; an expedition into the history of Africa, into religion, into language. The second part of the chapter examines the nature of "baobab", since this tree, like the "Tree of Life", is regarded as one growing upside-down. It is this upside-down nature of the tree which led me to believe that many existing stereotypes and myths are turned upside-down in the novel: about slaves, about woman, language, the Afrikaans literary tradition, the "traditional" structure of the novel, culture transcending nature, the slave woman's language. In chapter 2 I have examined only one of these expeditions, viz. the slave woman's inner expeditions consisting of her experiences as a slave and her journeys of reminiscence. These journeys at the same time embrace all the other expeditions. Her inner expeditions are signified by a number of codes, which fulfil literally the function of processes of knowledge, of self- knowledge, as well as of systems in which meaning is contained. By undertaking this inner expedition, the woman gains greater clarity of vision concerning her own existence and the existence of man/woman in general. Chapter 3 deals mainly with the concept of possession/ownership, which results in two diametrically opposed groups: the owner class and the owned class. The peculiar institution of slavery has given rise to these two irreconcilable groups, and therefore a brief history of slavery is included in this chapter. The slave woman is initially one of the owned class, but through indoctrination, she too aspires to become a member of the owner class. In the second half of the chapter, then, the woman is discussed as owner. Her position becomes a reflection of the position of her owners, to illustrate the peculiarity of the capitalist system in which there will always be the rulers and the subjects, the oppressor and the oppressed, the owner and the owned.

Abstract:
Hurricane Wilma: A Love Story is a coming-of-age memoir about the two years the narrator spent rebuilding his hurricane-damaged condo in Miami Beach in order to provide a home for the woman he would eventually marry. The torturous rebuilding process forced the narrator to confront his deepest insecurities, to overcome a lifelong mother dependency and to assume adult responsibility. He learns to accept and even love the imperfections and particularities of his apartment, just as he does those of his girlfriend. The writing style aspires to the elegance of Tobias Wolff’s This Boy’s Life, the integrity of William Finnegan’s Crossing the Line, the irreverence of Carl Hiaasen’s Basket Case and the insight of Calvin Trillin’s Remembering Denny. The memoir is a tale of growing up despite oneself, of a young journalist who comes to learn, through a series of missteps and misadventures, the true meaning of home.

This study has as its aim the analysis of the play The Importance of Being Earnest (2007), written by Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), in accordance with the aesthetic theoretical perspective, of which Wilde was a major exponent. A method of analogical comparison was utilised, contrasting Oscar Wilde’s theory, taken from some of his critical essays, with the text of the play The Importance of Being Earnest, as a representation of his dramaturgy in practice. The theoretical and critical texts by Wilde were chosen according to the aims of this proposal, the most relevant being: “The Critic as Artist”, “The Decay of Lying”, “The Truth of Masks” and “Pen, Pencil and Poison”, all of which were published together in the book Intentions, republished in Oscar Wilde’s Complete Works (2007). The research moved from the theoretical conceptions of the Aesthetic Movement (general) to the aesthetic conceptions found in Wilde’s articles (specific), therefore the aforementioned essays are used as the aesthetic theoretical approach which was chosen to lead the research. Considering that the main theorist of the Aesthetic Movement was Walter Pater (1839 – 1894), his works, Appreciations, with an Essay on Style (1889) and The Renaissance: Studies in Art and Poetry (1873), were analysed in order to clarify the theoretical premises of the Aesthetic Movement and which of these are shared with Oscar Wilde. Taking these conjectures as a starting point, the impact of these theoretical concepts on Wilde’s practice was then analysed

Parveen, Nazia. "Oscar Wilde and Victorian psychology." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/10387.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines Oscar Wilde’s theories of art in connection with specific debates ongoing in Victorian psychology as it emerged in the periodical press. By cross examining Wilde’s periodical contributions with psychological theories, concepts and discussions disseminated through periodicals this thesis offers a contextual account of Wilde’s creativity. Scholars generally look to Wilde’s Oxford Notebooks to gain an insight into his interaction with scientific culture. While the notebooks are an invaluable source to scholars they only cover Wilde’s learning in the 1870s and therefore exclude the influential context of the 1880s when he was engaged as a journalist for numerous periodicals and newspapers. Chapter one will demonstrate how reading Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray alongside neighbouring articles in the Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine reveals the hidden context of psychology in which the editors of the issue attempted to establish the text. The second chapter explores Wilde’s engagement in the disputes over psychological nomenclature alongside the psychology of George Henry Lewes, James Sully and other contributors. The third chapter will investigate the network in which Wilde’s reviewing for the Pall Mall Gazette established him. Wilde’s exchanges with aesthetic theorists and fellow reviewers Sully and Grant Allen will also be documented. The fourth chapter will demonstrate how Wilde creatively engaged with theories of atomism, emotionalist psychology and physiological aesthetics. The final chapter will examine the ethical questions posed by Wildean aesthetics in relation to scientific naturalism. Wilde originally communicated his theories through periodicals but also delivered lectures (which were reported in magazines), as well as eventually transforming his periodical articles into book publications. While this thesis places the onus on the periodical formats of Wilde’s texts, his lectures and revised editions of his writings will also be examined where relevant.

Abstract:
Willa Cather (1873-1947) has been seen by many critics as a regional novelist of marginal importance. Attention has largely been confined to her portrayal of the American Midwest during the pioneer age and it has been assumed that she was primarily an elegist for the passing of the frontier. This study attempts to view her work in the larger context of European culture and to demonstrate that she is not, as has so often been suggested, an old-fashioned local colourist but a major writer of international significance. The thesis makes extensive reference to Cather's unpublished letters which are housed in over sixty separate collections. Due to the stipulations in Cather's will, several libraries do not permit her letters to be reproduced in any form but I was able to read them in person. This unpublished material confirms that Cather's main themes are the interaction of the Old World with the New and the power of art to sanction life. The thesis begins with a short biography, showing particularly the influence of Cather's immigrant neighbours on her early life, and an account of how her preoccupation with the European heritage informed her perspective of America. It also outlines briefly the contrast between Cather and most of her contemporaries and the special difficulties faced by American women writers. This study analyses Cather's novels, in loose chronological order, in the light of her absorbtion in Wagnerian music drama, Virgilian epic and nineteenthcentury French and Russian literature, in order to reveal how her particular cultural awareness influenced her experiments with narrative form and the development of her distinctive style. I hope to show how, through this means, Cather's work acts not only as a corrective to the aggressively masculine tendencies in the literature of the American West, but how she endowed local concerns with universal significance and appeal.

Abstract:
Eleven out of the twelve novels that Willa Cather wrote, that is all but the last one, depict the movement in search of culture, self-fulfillment and a place away from the small town life of the Midwest. In spite of the beauty of the landscape the only solution is escape to the big cities of the eastern seaboard and often further east to Europe. The characters' attraction to the east is bound up with the author's love of France. The numerous references to this country throughout the canon (the 'Frenchness') attest to the belief in the supremacy of French culture which comes to its head in Death Comes for the Archbishop and Shadows on the Rock. The journey of quest is often undertaken by characters whose childhood has been influenced by the presence of European immigrants. The basis of the movement from west to east, occasionally with a return to the west, is the transcription of Cather's own experience as an immigrant in Nebraska. This original displacement and the new surroundings marked her life and her writing. The desire for something else, and the longing and restlessness the protagonists experience create the current of nostalgia tangible throughout all the novels. Even when they succeed professionally they cannot help wondering if their movement has been worth the sacrifice. Abstract:
Oscar Wilde’s fairytales have been read to children for more than a century. Nevertheless, since the time of their publication in 1888 and 1891, the target audience of The Happy Prince and Other Tales and A House of Pomegranates have been the concern of critics. Delving into the context behind the rich and colourful imagery, one can find implications of homosexuality, the Paterian aesthetic and religious connotations. According to Carol Tattersall, The Happy Prince and Other Tales successfully mislead the public that it is innocent of any intention to undermine established standards of living or writing. Tattersall’s argument is based on comparing the first collection to Wilde’s second, A House of Pomegranates, which was perceived as “offensive and immoral” (136). On the other hand, William Butler Yeats states in his introduction to The Complete Works of Oscar Wilde that overall the reviewers of The Happy Prince and Other Tales were hostile because of Wilde’s aesthetic views (ixxvi). But Yeats overlooks the fact that Wilde was very pleased and proud, dashing notes to friends and reviewers and signing copies to many people (Tattersall 129). In general, the reception of Wilde’s first collection was more positive than that of the second because it was milder and more subtle in its controversial themes.

Abstract:
Hsp90 reveals phenotypic variation in the laboratory, but is Hsp90 depletion important in the wild? Recent work from Chen and Wagner in BMC Evolutionary Biology has discovered a naturally occurring Drosophila allele that downregulates Hsp90, creating sensitivity to cryptic genetic variation. Laboratory studies suggest that the exact magnitude of Hsp90 downregulation is important. Extreme Hsp90 depletion might reactivate transposable elements and/or induce aneuploidy, in addition to revealing cryptic genetic variation.See research article http://wwww.biomedcentral.com/1471-2148/12/25 webcite

Set against the political backdrop of the boycotts, arson and funerals of July 1980 in Grahamstown, this novel explores how the discovery of the dead body of a street child under the walls of St Jude’s Chapel sets events in motion that provoke the spiritual crises faced by the two protagonists. Father Philip Riley, the non-stipendiary curate at St Jude’s who had come to South Africa as a missionary inspired by Trevor Huddleston, has over the years lost any sense of his priestly vocation and his own personal beliefs. Lieutenant Daniel Broughton of the Grahamstown CID has to solve the mystery of the boy’s death, but he too has lost his idealism following a career in the South African Police that began at Sharpeville, and now hovers in a dead-end position in Grahamstown. Both these men have to come to terms with what the death of the street child requires of them. Riley has to overcome his reluctance to give the child a proper burial, and Broughton has to dig deeper than he is initially willing to, to determine how the child died. As the story unfolds, details emerge which thwart the opening attempts by both men to deflect any responsibility for the child from themselves. Riley had started life in an orphanage, and had been forced into colluding with the supervisor to cover up the cause of death of one of the orphans. He is challenged by the selfless love shown for the child by Mrs Mabata, a parishioner at St Jude’s who had tried to foster the street child. He realises that his reluctance to engage with the situation has to do with denying his own failures, based on his own life story. Giving in to pressure from a Roman Catholic priest to carry out the funeral, he discovers an inner strength to defy a police order not to conduct the funeral. The funeral goes ahead successfully, and Riley experiences moments of transcendence that allow him to re-discover his vocation. On the other hand, Broughton discovers that the street child’s involvement as an informer for the Security Police had been the cause of his death.

Abstract:
Objectives To prevent economic problems by high wild boar populations, an effective and biologically based wild boar management has to be established. A lot of wild boar research has been done in the last decades. However, game managers were not able to incorporate this knowledge into the development of effective management strategies. Thus, furthermore studies have to be accomplished to expand wild boar science and management. This thesis, based on a radiotelemetric study in southwestern Mecklenburg–Western Pomerania, presents research results on wild boar space use patterns, dispersal, grouping patterns and divisions. For all these measures I examined the influence of age classes and environmental factors affecting behavioural patterns (e.g. hunting, seasonal resources, seasonal requirements). Finally, I discussed efficiency and amount of hunting pressure of different hunting methods. Results The wild boar groups divided temporarily in 12.3 % of all observed localisations. We defined four types of divisions: short-term local, short-term extensive, long-term extensive and final division. The small home range sizes did not differ between age classes or group types with a slight tendency for larger home ranges of yearlings, especially in summer. The shift of summer home ranges was stronger in yearlings than in adults. Three space use patterns occurred in summer: field sows, commuters and forest sows. Only 15 % of all shot animals were shot outside their mothers’ home range, only one fourth of these “dispersed” animals were females. Males were shot at larger distances than females. Diurnal activity was positively influenced by daytime length, nutritional needs and fewer disturbances. Due to this reasons an impact of hunting was not clearly detectable. Hunting did influence activity and space use only in moderate intensities. Single hunt from hides is the dominating and an efficient hunting method. The sustainable harvest rate was not exhausted. Conclusions The small home ranges and low, male biased, dispersal rates denote strong site fidelity in all age and reproductive classes within female wild boar. The short distances and low dispersal rates, even within males, might be affected by all year round equably distributed high abundance of resources. Changed space use patterns in summer are mainly influenced by changed food availability. Although hunting was often presumed to be responsible for behavioural changes, little direct influences were observed in this study. The results reflect an interaction between habitat types, season, and nutritional needs on most behavioural patterns. Sound nutritional conditions and year-round low hunting pressure might be responsible for similar seasonal home ranges. Group fluctuations, occurrence of sub-groups as well as temporary and final divisions seem to be common behavioural patterns within wild boar groups, depending on age classes, reproduction, and seasonal nutritional supplies. Wild boar groups react flexible on several seasonal internal and extrinsic factors. The omnivore wild boar is enabled easily to adapt to various environments. Its wide eco-ethological plasticity enables the species to colonize new habitats and enlarge its distribution. All over Europe hunting rates seem to be lower than reproduction of wild boar. To reduce populations and thus, damages, supplemental feeding should be reduced and hunting rates have to be increased especially for females, as all age classes of females are highly reproductive. Hunting management is the most important tool for disease and damage control. As all hunting methods caused similar and negligible disturbances in this study, efficiency should get top priority. The combination of different hunting methods is necessary for reduction on comprehensive areas

Abstract:
Since the 1930s, wild horses have become a subject of public concern. They are often showcased as symbols representing the historic past of the western United States. More recently they have become symbols of a mythic, or imagined, west. Writers, scholars, politicians, advocates, ranchers, and land managers are among the few groups who have taken a role in the livelihood of these animals living freely on public rangelands. The protection movement that began in the 1950s and carried over into the 1970s ultimately resulted in the passage of the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act. This act placed all wild horses living on public rangelands under the protection of the Bureau of Land Management and the Forest Service. Before this legislation individuals in the West could round up wild horses without interference. Afterwards, only the federal government and appointed contractors were allowed to do this. As a result of all the policy changes people in the general public began learning more about the wild horse situation in the United States. Perceptions regarding wild horses have undergone some change since the passage of the 1934 Taylor Grazing Act. Case studies contained in this dissertation provide examples of perceptions in different parts of the country. The personal narratives gathered from these areas are analyzed as essential pieces to the wild horse dilemma. They help provide an additional lens through which scholars can examine the changing perceptions regarding wild horses. The second section of this dissertation delves into the developmental stages of wild horse protection in the United States. Advocates, activists, and politicians sometimes view the subject in varying ways and those are examined. Legislation, slaughter, holding facilities, and adoption methods are a few of the main areas analyzed within this section. As times have changed it has become necessary to reform and adapt under the Act of 1971. Doing this could ensure the future of wild horses living in the United States. Perceptions about them have changed, and it is still a subject wrought with emotion, but American identity is still connected to their aesthetic appeal.

This work aims study the trajectory of playwright Zeno Wilde (1947-1998) from the analysis of a selection of the author plays with emphasis on Blue Jeans (1980), drama lived by young transvestites and hustlers, who opted for the nightlife prostitution as an alternative survival. Apart from Blue Jeans (1980), whose relevance was essential to consolidate the dramaturgical scenario, the later writings of the author, nine were commented plays in this work, namely: Uma lição longe demais (1986), Anjos da Guarda (1987), Salve o Prazer (1992), A segunda morte de Pedro e Paulo (1996), Os olhos cor de mel de James Dean (1992), Zero de Conduta (1993), Quem te fez saber que estavas nu?(1989), Ritos de infância (1988) e Sabe quem dançou?(1990) .Divided into two chapters, this research brings primarily a reflection on what is marginality, contextualizing it in Brazilian theater for later review 80, bringing questions about whether the decade was, in fact, "lost " or is meant a plurality of trends arising from the numerous transformations that the time spent. Parts are discussed sequentially Blue Jeans (1980), Uma lição longe demais (1986) e Anjos da Guarda (1987), in the first chapter. The second chapter aims at tracing the experiences of Zeno Wilde with other universes to merge, the plays, the theme already present in the marginal parts of the first chapter, however, with references to the movies (James Dean and Pasolini), music (Assis Valente), the theater itself (Nelson Rodrigues) and other topics discussed. Taking as its starting point the analysis of Zeno´s plays, this work comments the theatrical production of the author and his position in the national drama, considering the theatrical text as an important tool for reading, analysis and interpretation of literary genre considering the political, artistic and cultural Brazilian events from 80s to 90s of the twentieth century. For the Brazilian drama 80s, the work of critics such as Alberto Guzik and Fauzi Arap are of great value and are present in this research, beyond thinking of authors like Sabato Magaldi and Silviano Santiago. About contextualization and understanding of modernity and its consequences, there are important contributions of theorists such as Fredric Jameson, Stuart Hall, Nestor Garcia Canclini, Beatriz Sarlo, Marshall Berman and Zygmunt Bauman

Faria, Catia. "Animal ethics goes wild: the problem of wild animal suffering and intervention in nature." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/385919.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis I claim that, on the assumption that we have reasons to assist other individuals in need, there are decisive reasons to intervene in nature to prevent or reduce the harms wild animals suffer, provided that it is feasible and that the expected result is net positive. Moreover, I claim that these reasons are as strong as those we would have to intervene in order to help human beings that were in similar circumstances. This is because: (a) all sentient individuals, including nonhuman animals, are morally considerable, irrespective of their species or other alleged species-specific attributes; (b) the interests of wild animals are systematically frustrated by different natural events, so that most of them have lives of net suffering; and (c) the various objections that may be put forward against intervention in nature ultimately fail to show that our reasons against intervening are sufficiently strong.
