Abstract:
Raphanus raphanistrum L. (wild radish) is a widespread and economically problematic weed of winter crops including wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in southern Australia. Management of the weed is achieved by a range of non-chemical and chemical techniques. Current management is failing to contain the weed, which is increasing in abundance and distribution. The characteristics of staggered recruitment, dormancy, rapid growth, competitive ability and high levels of seed production contribute to its persistence. The literature review concludes that weeds formed the basis for perpetuation of R. raphanistrum, a claim further investigated by simulation modeling. The effective management of R. raphanistrum should aim to achieve declining populations and this requires the integration of all factors that regulate seed production. Reducing seed production of R. raphanistrum in wheat can be achieved by applying herbicides at reproductive stages of development. This technique has been demonstrated to be an effective, safe and practical method of reducing seed production of R. raphanistrum in wheat. Reducing seed production of R. raphanistrum by herbicides applied at reproductive stages of development is a technique that can be incorporated into an integrated weed management program to improve control

Abstract:
The extensive and continual use of herbicides in cropping situations has inevitably led to the phenomenon of "herbicide-resistance" in weeds and this has become one of the most challenging issues in modern agriculture. Herbicide-tolerant crops (HTC) were introduced to diversify weed management practices, but the lack of integrated weed management strategies, along with the continuous use of the same herbicide mode of action (MOA) demanded by the HTC has continued to impose selection pressure on weeds to evolve with herbicide resistance. Consequently, this thesis has been focused on the introduction of herbicide MOA combinations into HTC systems in an attempt to reduce the rate of herbicide resistance evolution in weeds. Raphanus raphanistrum is the number one broadleaf weed in Australia, and for this case study, the newly released ALS-inhibiting imidazolinone tolerant faba bean cultivar PBA Bendoc with its conventional cultivar, PBA Samira, were selected as the study species. ALS-inhibiting (imazamox + imazapyr and imazethapyr) and PSII-inhibiting (metribuzin) herbicides were used as the two herbicide MOAs. The herbicide sensitivity of R. raphanistrum was initially evaluated at different growth stages, in glasshouse studies using herbicide-resistant and susceptible biotypes to ALS-inhibiting herbicides. The highest susceptibility was observed at the earliest growth stage regardless of the biotype and Imazamox + imazapyr proved to be more effective in controlling both biotypes compared to imazethapyr. The same two herbicides were tested on faba bean cultivars at different growth stages to assess crop tolerance and identify the herbicide application window. The field trials conducted in 2018 and 2019 showed increased ALS-inhibiting herbicide tolerance in PBA Bendoc compared to PBA Samira even at the most advanced growth stage. Both faba bean cultivars were then evaluated for their tolerance to metribuzin in-crop application at different herbicide rates. Both cultivars responded similarly, showing progressive herbicide damage with increasing application rates. However, the reduced pod number, even at the lowest rate used, flagged the possible yield penalties that may result in using in-crop metribuzin applications. It is thus suggested that metribuzin must be used post sowing pre-emergent (PSPE) respecting the label recommendations. The potential herbicide combinations were then tested on herbicide-resistant R. raphanistrum and PBA Bendoc to evaluate their efficacies. Metribuzin was initially used as PSPE in all combinations, and was to be followed by imazamox + imazapyr applications at the same growth stages of the weed and the crop as in previous experiments. However, 100% control of R. raphanistrum was achieved using metribuzin alone, and thus no second herbicide was required. All the assessed herbicide combinations were tolerated by PBA Bendoc, proving the suitability of these herbicide combinations for incorporation into the PBA Bendoc cropping system. These results led to two potential herbicide combination strategies: (i) herbicide rotations, with metribuzin as PSPE in one year along with another potential herbicide MOA in the following year, (ii) herbicide sequential application, with metribuzin applied at PSPE and imazamox + imazapyr applied at the 2-4 leaf stage if R. raphanistrum plants survived the metribuzin treatment. A seed germination study was conducted under different temperature/photoperiods, pH levels, osmotic potentials, salinity and burial depths to identify the optimal germination conditions for R. raphanistrum. The optimum germination conditions for both herbicide-resistant and susceptible biotypes of R. raphanistrum were found to be 25ºC/15ºC temperature range under 24 hours complete dark. However, the significant interaction between photoperiod and temperature indicated that the seed germination under higher temperatures is less favoured by 24 hours dark conditions regardless of the biotype. An increased moisture stress tolerance in herbicide-resistant seeds was observed, whilst both biotypes reacted similarly to different pH levels and burial depths. In summary, this thesis has elucidated the effectiveness of two herbicide MOAs in controlling R. raphanistrum while addressing the crop tolerance to these herbicide MOA combinations. These findings will help in setting up stewardship guidelines to be used with the PBA Bendoc faba bean cultivar to mitigate the misuse of herbicides, thus ensuring their sustainable application. In addition, the demonstration of differential seed germination requirements of resistant and susceptible R. raphanistrum seeds has provided further information to help with its systematic management. Overall, this study can be used as a case study to investigate herbicide options that can be used in different HT crop cultivars to control a range of weed species.

Abstract:
The objective of this Ph.D. research was to identify new and novel mechanisms of wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum L.) resistance to photosystem II (PSII) inhibitors, auxinics, and acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS) inhibitors. PSIIinhibitor resistance was demonstrated to be target-site based, and conferred by a Ser264 to Gly substitution of the D1 protein. Auxinic resistance was associated with reduced herbicide translocation to the meristematic regions of resistant wild radish plants. Two new resistance mutations of wild radish AHAS were discovered, including one encoding the globally rare Asp376 to Glu substitution, and another encoding an Ala122 to Tyr substitution, which has never been identified or assessed for resistance in plants previously. Characterization of the frequency and distribution of AHAS resistance mutations in wild radish from the WA wheatbelt revealed that Glu376 was widespread, and that some mutations of AHAS are more common than others. Computer simulation was used to examine the molecular basis of resistance-endowing AHAS target-site mutations. Furthermore, through the computer-aided analysis, residues were identified with the potential to confer resistance upon substitution, but which have not previously been assessed for this possibility. Results from this Ph.D. research demonstrate that diverse, unrelated mechanisms of resistance to PSII inhibitors, auxinics, and AHAS inhibitors have evolved in wild radish of the WA wheatbelt, and that these mechanisms have accumulated in some populations.

Abstract:
[Truncated abstract] Wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum L.), an outcrossing annual plant, is one of the most widespread and successful colonising weeds in the Australian wheat belt. It was introduced accidentally during the latter part of the 19th century, apparently independently through the major ports of southern Australia. The widespread success of wild radish, and therefore the likelihood of distinct populations, gives us the opportunity to study the colonizing process with adaptation in annual outbreeding species, and to explore their genetic diversity. The aims of this thesis were to study the genetic diversity of wild radish and to investigate which factors are important in its success. After an initial review of the literature (chapter 2), the thesis describes experiments where genetic variation between and within populations was compared at 55 sites in transects across the wheat belt and high rainfall zones of temperate Western Australia (chapter 3). In chapter 4, variation in life history traits was compared with variation in AFLP molecular markers. The role of seed dormancy in the survival of the species was examined in chapter 5, and variation in the oil content of seeds and their fatty acid composition was examined in chapter 6. Finally, the results were discussed in chapter 7 with special reference to the adaptive value of outcrossing in annual weeds. The results suggest that wild radish has evolved to fit the Australian environment. However, measurement of 14 morphological and phenological characters showed that in most cases within site variation was much greater than that between sites. Most of the variation between sites was associated with geoclusters, a name given to zones of similar environmental conditions in regard to rainfall and temperature. Thus plants from areas with high rainfall and low temperature produced longer, wider pods with more segments, heavier seeds and flowered later than plants from more arid areas.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The electromagnetic and mechanical design aspects of an optimally designed double-sided rotor radial flux permanent magnet wind generator with non-overlap iron-cored stator windings are analysed in this thesis. The generator topology proposed in this study aims to reduce the strength demand on the generator structural support, caused by the magnetic attraction forces between the rotor and stator iron components, and in so doing reducing the overall generator mass. The proposed design has very good cooling properties. Compared to a conventional iron-cored permanent magnet generator and an air-cored permanent magnet generator, the double-sided rotor iron-cored topology performs the best with reference to mass and efficiency.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The electromagnetic and mechanical design aspects of optimally designed doublesided rotor radial flux permanent magnet wind generators with non-overlap aircored (iron-less) stator windings are analysed in this thesis. The wind generator is implemented in a battery charging system for use in rural settlements and farms. The optimal generator and system design is based on an accurate analytical model and is confirmed with finite element analysis. It is shown, amongst other things, that the electromagnetic design and surprisingly not the mechanical design, determines the rotor yoke dimensions and, hence, largely the mass and cost of the generator. Alternative battery charging systems are also considered and discussed.

Optimizing renewable distributed generation in distribution systems has gained popularity with changes in federal energy policies. Various studies have been reported in this regard and most of the studies are based on optimum wind and/or solar generation planning in distribution system using various optimization techniques such as analytical, numerical, and heuristic. However, characteristics such as high energy density, relatively lower footprint of land, availability, and local reactive power compensation ability, have gained increased popularity for optimizing distributed wind generation (DWG) in distribution systems. This research investigated optimum distributed generation planning (ODGP) using two primary optimization techniques: analytical and heuristic. In first part of the research, an analytical optimization method called “Combined Electrical Topology (CET)” was proposed in order to minimize the impact of intentional structural changes in distribution system topology, in distributed generation/ DWG placement. Even though it is still rare, DWG could be maximized to supply base power demand of three-phase unbalanced radial distribution system, combined with distributed battery energy storage systems (BESS). In second part of this research the usage of DWG/BESS as base power generation, and to extend the ability to sustain the system in a power grid failure for a maximum of 1.5 hours was studied. IEEE 37-node, three-phase unbalanced radial distribution system was used as the test system to optimize wind turbines and sodium sulfide (NaS) battery units with respect to network real power losses, system voltage profile, DWG/BESS availability and present value of cost savings. In addition, DWG’s ability to supply local reactive power in distribution system was also investigated. Model results suggested that DWG/NaS could supply base power demand of a threephase unbalanced radial distribution system. In addition, DWG/NaS were able to sustain power demand of a three-phase unbalanced distribution system for 1.5 hours in the event of a power grid failure.

Abstract:
A conventional radial-field FSPM machine was designed and studied. The research focussed on the effectiveness of using a parametric study to obtain an optimized solution compared to using a computerized optimizer; as well as an in-depth core loss analysis. The designing process started with an analytical design that was used for initial design purposes, and this was followed by numerical simulations to get an optimized solution. Within the numerical simulations, the parametric analysis and optimization were performed. The final optimized design was designed to be manufactured and compared to both the analytical and numerical results for validation. The analytical and numerical results were obtained using MathWorks MATLAB 2019a and Ansys Maxwell 19.1 respectively. The results show that an optimizer is more effective in finding an optimized solution in the design space, however, the parametric analyses are still useful in order to determine the design regions for the optimizer and how sensitive certain parameters are towards the FSPM machine's performance. In the end, these analyses are used to speed up the design process by minimizing computational time, and also provides an understanding to the designer of parameter changes on the FSPM machine's performance.

Abstract:
I present a detailed study of the behaviour of the exotic X-ray binary Cygnus X-3 at radio, (sub)mm, infrared, red-optical and X-ray wavelengths. Further unusual properties of the system are unearthed and previously expounded models are refined by new observations. In order to address the broader picture, a multiwavelength comparison of Cygnus X-3 with other ‘radio-jet’ X-ray binaries is also undertaken. Infrared observations of Cyg X-3 at high time resolution reveal many rapid flare events superimposed upon the 4.8 hr (presumed) orbital motion. Photometry simultaneously in the H & K-bands allows strong constraints to be placed upon T & Nε for the flaring component. Dereddening of RI- J-H-K-L-L’ photometry places limits on the likely extinction to Cyg X-3 of 4.5 ≤ AJ ≤ 7.5 mag. Further infrared study, simultaneous with radio monitoring and observations with OSSE/GRO and the INT shed greater light on the source, including possible orbital colour changes and a longterm correlation between radio and infrared flux levels. Deep imaging of the field reveals many previously undiscovered infrared sources within a few arcsec of Cyg X-3. Simultaneous millimetre and radio observations of Cyg X-3 reveal anomalously strong mm fluxes. Interpreting this in terms of significant absorption of the cm fluxes during the passage outwards of the radio-emitting plasmons, strengthens the case for a dense stellar wind in the Cyg X-3 system. Further radio and sub(mm) observations of Cyg X-3 during outburst confirm previously observed phenomena such as quenched radio emission prior to outburst, and establish the importance of radiation loss mechanisms in the decay of radio plasmons ejected from the source. A model describing the qualitative behaviour of the source during outburst is presented.

Lotz, Stefanus Ignatius. "Empirical modelling of the solar wind influence on Pc3 pulsation activity." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1005249.

Full text
Abstract:
Geomagnetic pulsations are ultra-low frequency (ULF) oscillations of the geomagnetic field that have been observed in the magnetosphere and on the Earth since the 1800’s. In the 1960’s in situ observations of the solar wind suggested that the source of pulsation activity must lie beyond the magnetosphere. In this work the influence of several solar wind plasma and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) parameters on Pc3 pulsations are studied. Pc3 pulsations are a class of geomagnetic pulsations with frequency ranging between 22 and 100 mHz. A large dataset of solar wind and pulsation measurements is employed to develop two empirical models capable of predicting the Pc3 index (an indication of Pc3 intensity) at one hour and five minute time resolution, respectively. The models are based on artificial neural networks, due to their ability to model highly non-linear interactions between dependent and independent variables. A robust, iterative process is followed to find and rank the set of solar wind input parameters that optimally predict Pc3 activity. According to the parameter selection process the input parameters to the low resolution model (1 hour data) are, in order of importance, solar wind speed, a pair of time-based parameters, dynamic solar wind pressure, and the IMF orientation with respect to the Sun-Earth line (i.e. the cone angle). Input parameters to the high resolution model (5 minute data) are solar wind speed, cone angle, solar wind density and a pair of time-based parameters. Both models accurately predict Pc3 intensity from unseen solar wind data. It is observed that Pc3 activity ceases when the density in the solar wind is very low, even while other conditions are favourable for the generation and propagation of ULF waves. The influence that solar wind density has on Pc3 activity is studied by analysing six years of solar wind and Pc3 measurements at one minute resolution. It is suggested that the pause in Pc3 activity occurs due to two reasons: Firstly, the ULF waves that are generated in the region upstream of the bow shock does not grow efficiently if the solar wind density is very low; and secondly, waves that are generated cannot be convected into the magnetosphere because of the low Mach number of the solar wind plasma due to the decreased density.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis was to investigate the typical radial pattern of density and microfibril angle within Pinus radiata with respect to structural stability. In order to investigate changes in mechanical stability with different radial patterns, first experimental work was carried out in order to obtain elastic constants, Poisson ratios and limits of proportionality for green corewood and outerwood, these values, a discussion on their accuracy and the implications of the values are included along with a comparison to previous literature. These constants were used to parametrise a finite element model of a tree stem with different radial patterns, including patterns not observed in nature, wind loadings were applied to the stem and failure evaluated. It was found that patterns consisting of high density stiff wood and/or low density high flexibility wood could withstand the greatest wind speeds for a given stem and canopy, while high density flexible and low density stiff profiles generally performed poorly. The analysis was considered at ages 5, 10 and 15 years, each providing similar results. Why these profiles perform best, what errors need to be considered, and other evolutionary pressures which could narrow this list of profiles were discussed. The need for further research, and the directions for this research are suggested.

Abstract:
Since the discovery of the ability of a radio instrument to detect dust, several studies have been conducted to determine the physical phenomena underlying measures, the fluxes, and the dust characteristics which can be determined. The present work concerns the exploitation and the interpretation of dust observations made by WAVES instrument onboard the two STEREO probes at 1 AU, as well as modeling of dust dynamics in the interplanetary medium. This thesis began with a study of the sub-micron dust data. The results of this study showed that these data were relevant in the sense that despite the uncertainties on the data and the simplified modeling of the flux, the measurements of the direction provided by this instrument are at least as accurate as those provided by conventional instruments. We, thereafter, began a study of observations of nanoparticles at 1 AU. We showed that a typical pulse generated by a nanoparticle impact is formed by the temporary disruption of the photo-electrons return current of the antenna which is closest to the point of impact. In addition, the comparison of measured and inferred flux observations in two different domains (time and frequency) shows a consistency and agreement between measurements. Finally, the modeling of the dynamics of nanoparticles supports the fact that nanoparticles created near the Sun are accelerated by the solar wind and can reach 300 km/s at 1 AU. Statistical analysis of the results of this study to 1 AU showed a consistency with the measurements obtained with STEREO data, and also with the interpretation of these measurements and the estimation of the electric charge of the plasma cloud

Abstract:
Mode conversion processes in plasmas allow wave energy to transferred between two or more different wave modes, and are often invoked in theories of space and astrophysical phenomena. For instance, electrostatic Langmuir waves which are trapped in the solar wind plasma can be converted to electromagnetic radiation and produce radio bursts, which can propagate through the plasma and thus be observed remotely. In environments where mode conversion has been invoked there is often a significant ambient magnetic field. This modifies the dispersion relations of the wave modes and can result in additional wave modes. However, magnetization effects have been neglected in the analyses of certain mode conversion processes. This thesis presents a number of investigations into mode conversion processes as they occur in magnetized plasmas, focusing on the magnetization of the Langmuir mode.

Abstract:
Conventional methods for health assessment of wild-caught and stranded seals were used to describe the disease status of harbor seals in California. Clinical chemistry, infectious disease prevalence, immune function, and contaminant data were collected to evaluate harbor seal health with data collected from three groups of seals. Wild-caught seals of all ages were sampled at two locations: San Francisco Bay (a heavily urbanized estuary) and Tomales Bay (a less developed control site). Stranded seals entered rehabilitation from a more extensive portion of the California coast which included the locations where seals were caught. Hematology reference intervals were generated to provide a baseline for health assessment among the seals. Individual variability in blood variables among seals was affected by age, sex, location, and girth. Disease surveillance focused on pathogens known to cause lesions in harbor seals, zoonoses, and those with terrestrial sources. Specific pathogens of interest were E coli, Clostridium perfringens, Vibrio spp, Campylobacter spp, Salmonella, Giardia, Cryptosporidium, avian influenza virus, Brucella, Leptospira spp., Toxoplasma gondii, Sarcocystis neurona, and Neospora caninum, Leptospira spp, and phocine and canine distemper virus. There was evidence of exposure to all pathogens except for phocine distemper virus. Simple measures of immune response were used to evaluate the immune function of harbor seal pups in rehabilitation that had evidence of previous bacterial infection. The swelling response to a subcutaneous injection of phytohemagglutinin (PHA) was positively associated with growth rate, possibly illustrating the energetic trade-offs between growth and immunity. Blubber contaminant concentrations (PCBs, DDTs, PBDEs, CHLDs, and HCHs) in harbor seal pups were grouped by extent of suckling and strand location. The ratio of PCB:DDT was increased in San Francisco Bay and decreased in Monterey Bay compared with other locations along the coast. Pups that weaned in the wild, lost weight and then stranded had the highest contaminant levels, equivalent to the concentrations detected in stranded adult harbor seals. Dispersal and survival were monitored by satellite telemetry in harbor seal pups released from rehabilitation and recently weaned wild-caught pups to assess the effect of condition, health, and contaminant levels on survival probability. Increased contaminant levels and decreased thyroxine (T4) were associated with decreased survival probability. Increased mass, particularly among the rehabilitated pups, was associated with increased survival probability. This study demonstrates that health and survival of harbor seals pups along the central California coast are impacted by human activities such as contaminant disposal, pathogen pollution and boat traffic, although the variability in individual health measures requires carefully designed studies to detect these effects.

Abstract:
The eastern race of the Loggerhead shrike (Lanius ludovicianus ssp. migrans) is a grassland bird federally listed as endangered. There are approximately 30 pairs remaining in the Canadian wild today. Captive breeding and release programs have been developed in Canada to help alleviate the decline. However, little is known about the fate of the released birds and the factors influencing their reproductive success. To help in the understanding of the movement, behaviour and survival of the shrikes post-release, we tested whether radio telemetry was an effective technique to follow these birds. Despite limited behavioural effects in captivity, a tail-mount was not suitable for released Loggerhead shrikes due to unreliable retention times. The second portion of this study addressed the factors influencing reproductive success in captivity, including breeding behaviour and individual characteristics. Distance between individual pairs in their cages, female nesting activity and male origin were the best predictors of success. Recommendations for managers are made.

Full text
Abstract:
The quasi-thermal noise spectroscopy is an accurate method of determination of density and temperature in space plasmas. When an electric antenna is immersed into a plasma, it is able to measure electrostatic fluctuations caused by the thermal motion of plasma particles. These fluctuations are detected as the power spectral density at the antenna terminals, observing a spectrum at frequencies comparable to the electron plasma frequency for both electrons and protons, since the proton signal is strongly Doppler-shifted towards higher frequencies due to the solar wind drift velocity. Beside inducing the fluctuating electric field, some of the electrons are impacting the antenna surface, causing disturbances of the antenna electric potential. The signal caused by this population is directly proportional to the flux of plasma electrons impacting the antenna and is dominant if the antenna has a large surface area. In this work, we use the orbit limited theory to calculate the incoming particle flux for a non-thermal plasma described by $kappa$ velocity distribution function, commonly measured in the solar wind. The increase in the particle collection by cylindrical and spherical objects is quantified and presented as a function of the surface electrostatic potential and the fraction of supra-thermal particles. Including these results into the theory has turned out to be absolutely necessary for accurate measurements of the plasma parameters whenever the shot noise is the dominant component in the power spectrum. This is the case for STEREO because the impact noise is overwhelming on this probe, due to the presence of short and thick antennas. The comprehensive study of data on this mission is motivated by the fact that the electron analyzers are malfunctioning since launch and no information on thermal electrons is available. Results obtained are verified by comparing with the results from Wind, showing a good match between the values measured by the two spacecraft. Uncertainties of the measurements are determined by the uncertainties of the instruments used and are estimated to be around $40%$. The final outcome of this work will be establishing a database of the electron moments in both STEREO A and B that will be covering the entire duration of the mission. In the second part of the thesis, we use the kinetic approach to expand the theory of the quasi-thermal noise to plasmas where electron-neutral collisions play a dominant role. This technique is able to measure the electron density, temperature and the collision frequency as independent parameters using the wide frequency range both below and above the plasma frequency, if the ratio of the collisional to plasma frequency is not smaller than 0.1. The results presented here have can be potentially applied in laboratory plasmas and unmagnetized ionospheres, while at the ionosphere of Earth their use is limited to low frequencies due to the presence of the magnetic field

Abstract:
Abstract This thesis studies the ionospheres of the Earth and Mars by combining the observations of versatile instruments providing information on various aspects of the planetary environments. The work on the terrestrial ionosphere focuses particularly on solar wind–magnetosphere–ionosphere coupling, while the work on the Martian ionosphere is based on the development of a new approach to analyse radio-occultation data to retrieve the atmospheric and ionospheric profiles. In the Earth's ionosphere, two papers study the effects of solar wind high-speed streams on the ionospheric F-region peak electron density and on cosmic noise absorption resulting from the precipitation of energetic (>30 keV) electrons into the D region. For the first paper, a modified version of the superposed epoch analysis method, called phase-locked superposed epoch analysis method, was developed. The main finding is that a depletion near the F-region peak takes place in the afternoon and evening sectors during high-speed stream events. This could be explained by an increase in the electron loss rate as a consequence of ion-neutral frictional heating, which enhances the ion temperature and leads to neutral atmosphere expansion. In addition, dayside and post-midnight F-peak electron density increases are observed, probably related to soft particle precipitation. The second study reveals that cosmic noise absorption occurs during up to 4 days after the arrival of a high-speed stream, as substorm-injected energetic electrons precipitate in the midnight to early-afternoon ionosphere, principally at auroral latitudes. A third study reports for the first time observations of a modulation of cosmic noise absorption at periods near 10 s, associated with pulsating aurora. This suggests that the energetic component of the precipitating ux is modulated consistently with the auroral (1–10 keV) energies. At Mars, radio-occultation experiments have been performed by the Mars Express spacecraft since 2004. In this thesis, a new data analysis approach is developed, based on the numerical simulation of radio wave propagation through modelled Martian atmosphere and ionosphere. This approach enables one to overcome limitations inherent in the classical inversion method which has been in use so far. It also gives access to new parameters such as ion density profiles. The new method is tested by analysing the data from two radio-occultation experiments
Tiivistelmä Tämä väitöskirja tutkii Maapallon ja Marsin ionosfäärejä yhdistämällä useiden eri instrumenttien havaintoja, joilla saadaan tietoa planeettojen ympäristöistä. Maapallon ionosfääriä koskeva työ tutkii aurinkotuuli–magnetosfääri–ionosfäärikytkentää, kun taas Marsin ionosfääriä koskevan työn tavoite on uuden radio-okkultaatiomittauksen data-analyysimenetelmän kehittäminen, joka tuottaa ilmakehän ja ionosfäärin profiileja. Maan ionosfäärin tapauksessa yhdessä julkaisussa tutkitaan nopeiden aurinkotuulivirtausten vaikutuksia F-kerroksen elektronitiheyteen ja toisessa julkaisussa tutkitaan energeettisten (>30 keV) elektronien sateesta johtuvaa kosmisen radiokohinan absorptiota D-kerroksessa. Ensimmäisessä julkaisussa on kehitetty uusi versio data-analyysimenetelmästä, jota kutsutaan vaihelukituksi epookkien superpositiomenetelmäksi.

Abstract:
Globally, there are approximately 900 000 telecommunication radio base station sites (RBS-sites)located in areas without access to the electrical grid. Traditionally, these sites are powered by dieselgenerators, consuming large amounts of fossil diesel fuel. Diesel combustion is connected both toenvironmental impacts and high economical expenses for the mobile operators. As the mobilenetwork expansion is increasingly located in off-grid areas of developing countries, the search forrenewable power alternatives has been intensified. This Master thesis presents results from a life cycle assessment (LCA) of photovoltaic and windturbine hybrid power configurations for off-grid RBS-sites. The LCA covers environmental impactsfrom all life cycle activities of the hybrid system: from raw material extraction, manufacturing, andtransportation, to on-site usage, and disposal. To enable assessment of variable hybrid configurations, four scalable sub-models were constructed:one diesel sub-model including the generator and yearly diesel consumption, one back-up batterysub-model, one PV module sub-model and one wind turbine sub-model. Included in the sub-modelswere required site equipment; e.g. foundations for generators, PV modules and battery banks, powerconverters, fuel tanks and possible housings. The number of generators, liters of fuel consumed peryear, number of battery cells, square meters of PV module and number of wind turbines were set asvariables. Hereby RBS-sites with different capacities and availability of renewable source could bemodeled. A hybrid configuration including 21 square meters photovoltaic modules, one wind turbine, a storageof 36 (12 V) batteries and one generator back-up consuming 1500 liters of diesel fuel per year wasevaluated. The hybrid site represents between 11 and 16 percent of the different environmentalimpact potentials, global warming potential specifically representing 13 percent, caused by acorresponding traditional diesel site consuming 20000 liters of fuel per year. The most importantparameters influencing the environmental performance of the renewable hybrid site following thediesel fuel production and combustion are the production energy mix and energy intensive processesincluding the up-stream silicon and lead processing. The thesis confirmed great environmental benefits of using wind and solar power at RBS-sites. Theadditional gain of applying wind power when feasible to decrease the PV module area or batterycapacity required was also demonstrated. The great importance of manufacturing location andelectricity mix should encourage Ericsson to map supplier manufacturing locations, searchingpossibilities to decrease the environmental impacts from the manufacturing phase of the differentsub-systems.

The main objective of this research was to compare evaporation measured in two Class A evaporation pans. The first one installed 15 cm over the surface and the second one installed at surface level in a small reservoir. The experiment was carried out at the Fisheries Station of the Federal University of Ceará, in Fortaleza. An automated weather station was installed at the same site. During February to November of 2008, evaporation data were measured in a daily basis. The weather data were collected in a weekly basis using a radio frequency system. The evaporation measured at a soil surface was 5.3% higher than the evaporation measured at a water surface level of the reservoir. The different installation conditions were influenced differently by the weather parameters. The evaporation estimation methods of Penman, Linsley and Linacre underestimated the evaporation measured in the reservoir, and the Penman method presented the smaller error

The main objective of this research was to compare evaporation measured in two Class A evaporation pans. The first one installed 15 cm over the surface and the second one installed at surface level in a small reservoir. The experiment was carried out at the Fisheries Station of the Federal University of CearÃ, in Fortaleza. The evaporation estimation methods of Penman, Linsley and Linacre underestimated the evaporation measured in the reservoir, and the Penman method presented the smaller error.

Di, Meo Natalie L. "Understanding the Inheritance and Mechanism of Auxinic Herbicide Resistance in Wild Radish (Raphanus raphanistrum L.)." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10214/4039.

Full text
Abstract:
Auxinic herbicide-resistant (i.e., resistant to 2,4-D and MCPA) wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum L.) was discovered in the Western Australian wheatbelt, providing an opportunity to integrate auxinic herbicide resistance into cultivated radish (R. sativus L.) using conventional breeding methods. It was hypothesized that the inheritance of auxinic herbicide resistance in wild radish is conferred by a single, dominant nuclear gene and, therefore, will be relatively easy to introgress from wild radish to cultivated radish; and the mechanism of auxinic herbicide resistance in wild radish is through an altered target-site. Visual injury data of the F2 progeny suggested that resistance was conferred by a quantitative trait with the susceptible allele(s) exhibiting dominance with minor cytoplasmically inherited genes masking the susceptible trait. In conclusion, the resistance allele(s) were quantitative and, thus, make selection for resistance difficult. Therefore, the introgression of the resistance allele(s) was not successfully completed. To determine the mechanism of resistance, the wild radish plants resistant WARR6-26 (R) and susceptible WARR7-5 (S) were treated with radiolabeled MCPA. There was no difference in metabolism of [14C]MCPA between R and S plants. Based upon the decline in the total 14C recovered over 72 h in R and S it was clear that both were “losing” [14C]MCPA; however, R plants were losing MCPA more rapidly. It was hypothesized that because R plants exude 14C more rapidly from their roots than S plants, this accounted for the resistance of R plants.

The significant role of plants can be observed through the dependency of animals and humans on them. Oxygen, materials, food and the beauty of the world are contributed by plants. Climate change, the decrease in pollinators, and plant diseases are causing a significant decline in both quality and coverage ratio of the plants and crops on a global scale. In developed countries, above 80 percent of rural production is produced by sharecropping. However, due to widespread diseases in plants, yields are reported to have declined by more than a half. These diseases are identified and diagnosed by the agricultural and forestry department. Manual inspection on a large area of fields requires a huge amount of time and effort, thereby reduces the effectiveness significantly. To counter this problem, we propose an automatic disease detection and classification method in radish fields by using a camera attached to an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to capture high quality images from the fields and analyze them by extracting both color and texture features, then we used K-means clustering to filter radish regions and feeds them into a fine-tuned GoogleNet to detect Fusarium wilt of radish efficiently at early stage and allow the authorities to take timely action which ensures the food safety for current and future generations.

Taiwan is located in the northeastern pacific region where tropical cyclone is very active and thus a major path for typhoons. Every typhoon season, approximately 30 typhoon forms in the northeastern pacific region. When the typhoon approaches Taiwan, the track and circulation of the typhoon changes dramatically due to the complex geographic features of the island, so it’s difficult to predict the typhoon’s track and rainfall. Compared with conventional data, radar observations have an advantage of high spatial and temporal resolutions, and Doppler radars are capable of capturing detailed characteristics of flow fields, including typhoon circulation. The observation of radar network in Taiwan was used to investigate the impact of radar data assimilation for typhoon simulation. The case of Typhoon Nanmadol(2011)was chosen for this study, it struck Taiwan from 28 Aug 2011 to 29 Aug 2011. The purpose of this study was to adjust the initial field of the numerical model to improve the short-term typhoon predictions near Taiwan by using Doppler radar radial wind data assimilation. The typhoon track, structure, and precipitation were also inspected to clarify the effect of radar data assimilation simulated when typhoon approaching Taiwan. In this study, Weather Research and Forecasting(WRF V3.2.1) model and 3D-VAR method of WRF Data Assimilation system(WRFDA V3.2.1)were used in doppler radar data assimilation.. The horizontal grid resolution of nested domains is 15 and 5 km, respectively, horizontal grid points were 301×253 and 241×241, model vertical layers extended from the surface up to 50 hPa with 35 levels. Initial conditions at 0000 UTC 28 Aug, and the WRF 3DVAR cycling from RCKT of CWB at 0600、0900、1200、1500 and 1800 UTC 28 Aug. The 3DVAR influence factor of horizontal scale for radar data assimilation was set R1 = 0.06 and R2 = 0.12. After a series of experiments, we obtained some conclusions :(1) Compared with the one-time radar data assimilation, cycling of the multiple-time radar data assimilation has more positive impact on typhoon simulation, (2)Larger influence factor of horizontal scale (R2 = 0.12) also has more positive impact than smaller influence factor of horizontal scale(R1 = 0.06)for typhoon simulation in Taiwan. More assimilation cycle collocate with a larger influence factor of horizontal scale(R2 = 0.12), had improved the accuracy of the numerical simulation. Compared with the non-assimilate experiment, the precipitation pattern and typhoon track in the assimilation experiment were closer to the observations.

Kiss, Brian W. "Survival, reproduction, movement, and habitat use of female eastern wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) in Manitoba’s Pembina Valley." 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1993/30151.

Full text
Abstract:
Vital rates and movement patterns of eastern wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) have never been studied at the northern extent of their North American range in Manitoba, Canada. Using radio telemetry during 2011 and 2012, this study collected estimates of female spring/summer survival, reproductive success, dispersal, home range size, and habitat use. Females had a 53% survival probability, 82% nesting frequency, 29% nesting success, 35% hen success, 11.3 eggs/clutch, 89% hatching success, and a natality rate of 2.3. Winter weather and relatively high predator numbers appear to have caused annual variation in survival and hen success. Spring dispersal distances and home ranges averaged 8.2 km and 554.4 ha, respectively. Home ranges were selected in relation to forests, cattle feedlots, and grasslands; while within home ranges, individuals selected areas close to grasslands, forests, and intermittent streams. These results can be used when modeling current populations, managing harvest, and structuring future releases.

This thesis proposes a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) to control wind generators with unsteady wind speed and load, because wind generators are nonlinear and the maximum power point would change under such circumstances. First, two radial basis function neural network models are proposed, one for estimating wind power and the other for estimating power, and then particle swarm optimization is used to obtain their best neuron distribution. In that, the network for estimating wind speed operates with inputting the rotational rate and the output power of the wind generator; the network for estimating power forms the correspondence between the controlled votage and output power according to the estimated wind speed and load. This thesis will employ these two models combined with particle swarm optimization to output the best controlled votage to proceed the MPP tracking. Second, to evaluate the performance of MPPT when being experimented under a artificial wind farm, this thesis measures signal data (the rotational rate, the output power, etc) of a small-scale wind generator with different wind speed and load. By the MPPT proposed in this thesis, the wind generator can operate at the optimal rotational speed to output the maximum power. Finally, the MPPT is experimented under six conditions, including with fixed, sine-waved, dramatically-changed, or randomly-changed wind speed, or variable load, or both being unstable, and then compared with traditional perturb & observe (P&O) method. The experiment results indicate that with variable wind speed and load, the MPPT in this thesis can shortly make the wind generator operate at the MPP and reduce the loss of the tracking system.

A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, School of Mechanical, Industrial and Aeronautical Engineering, University of the Witwatersrand, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Engineering. Johannesburg, May 2016
The present work describes the practical implementation of systems identification techniques to the development of a linear aerodynamic model for a small low-cost UAV equipped with a basic navigational and inertial measurement systems. The assessment of the applicability of the techniques were based on determining whether adequate aerodynamic models could be developed to aid in the reduction of wind tunnel testing when characterising new UAVs. The identification process consisted of postulating a model structure, flight test manoeuvre design, data reconstruction, aerodynamic parameter estimation, and model validation. The estimators that were used for the post-flight identification were the output error maximum likelihood method and an iterated extended Kalman filter with a global smoother. SIDPAC and FVSysID systems identification toolboxes were utilised and modified where appropriate. The instrumentation system on board the UAV consisted of three-axis accelerometers and gyroscopes, a three-axis vector magnetometer and GPS tracking while data was logged at 25 Hz. The angle of attack and angle of sideslip were not measured directly and were estimated using tailored data reconstruction methods. Adequate time domain lateral model correlation with flight data was achieved for the cruise flight condition. Adequacy was assessed against Theil’s inequality coefficients and Theil’s covariance. It was found that the simplified estimation algorithms based on the linearized equations of motion yielded the most promising model matches. Due to the high correlation between the pitch damping derivatives, the longitudinal analysis did not yield valid model parameter estimates. Even though the accuracy of the resulting models was below initial expectations, the detailed data compatibility analysis provided valuable insight into estimator limitations, instrumentation requirements and test procedures for systems identification on low-cost UAVs.

Abstract:
This thesis concentrates on 1938 radio broadcast Pravda vítězí (The Truth Will Win), broadcasted from Vienna in both Czech and Slovak languages in the two months preceding and following the signing of the Munich agreement. Its theoretical part follows the genesis of the two broadcasts, the personalities involved and also the connection between Pravda vítězí and Vlajka, the infamous Czech fascist movement. In the practical part, Nazi propaganda themes are being analyzed in both broadcasts during October 1938. Main focus is on the campaigns against president Beneš, against freemasonry and bolshevism, pro-German campaign and antisemitism. In the Slovak language broadcast, anti-Czech campaign was a significant part of the Nazi propaganda, along with the support of Slovak separatism. Comparison of the ideological focus and goals of both broadcasts is supported by numerous quotations. In the final part, the thesis offers a brief look at the reactions to the broadcasts. Also, it attempts to evaluate the broadcasts' possible effects on both Czech and Slovak audience in the light of its primary goal - the disintegration of Czechoslovakia.
