Abstract:
This study was undertaken to explore the market and value chain of apple in Jumla and Nepaljung in January 2014. Primary and secondary data were used for this study. All together 10 respondent farmers were selected for production related data, five retailers from Jumla and Nepaljung, one wholesaler from Nepaljung and 10 consumers for market study. Highest wholesale price was observed in May/June - June/July (NRs. 145/kg) while lowest was in Sept./Oct.-Oct./Nov. (NRs. 83/kg). Similarly highest retail price (NRs. 185/kg) was in the month of June/July and lowest (NRs. 115/Kg) was in Sept./Oct-Oct./Nov. The average farm gate price of apple is too low (NRs.26.93/kg) as compared to wholesale, retail and consumers prices. The producers, traders, transporters, wholesalers and retailers were the main marketing actors of apple. Contractual system before and during production were observed in marketing. Price spread of Jumla apple was assessed with the different actors (contractors, traders, wholesalers, retailers and consumers) in value chain. Apple is the major commodity for income generation so better knowledge on production marketing and value addition through processing should be imparted to the farmers.

Distribution of pharmaceutical products from the pharmaceutical industry before reaching the pharmacy service point must be through wholesale. Good distribution practice methods are a set of standardized routine working methods, which ensure the quality, safety, and efficacy of pharmaceutical products remain intact from the very beginning to the end of the expiration period. Good distribution practice methods must be implemented by all wholesale in Indonesia so that wholesale operations can run effectively and efficiently. All pharmaceutical wholesalers must have standard operating procedures, personnel with integrity, and a good documentation system.

Abstract:
As Sistan and Blouchistan province is one of the most important date producers in Iran, an attempt is made to estimate the economic function of factors affecting the date marketing margin in the province. The data required in this research have been collected through the field survey and document analysis. The results of the estimation of marketing margin functions was obtained through utilizing of the combination of models including the Price Increase Model, Relative Price and Marketing Margin. The data analysis indicates that the farm-gate price and the harvest margin of dates are among the highly influential factors on the entire marketing margin. The retail-margin function is influenced by the retail price and the retailer cost and the wholesale margin function is affected by the wholesale price and the wholesaler cost. Calculation of the market transparency determination criteria shows that due to the fact that the total of the farm-gate price and marketing costs are less than the retail sale, there is a lack of transparency in the studied marketing channels which in turn resulted in the declining market efficiency.

Abstract:
Inefficient marketing service increases price spread, which is a common feature in developing countries. The study aimed to analyze factors affecting retail-price spread of rice in Nepal using the Relative Price Spread (RPS) model with cross section data collected from four districts namely Jhapa, Morang, Chitwan, and Rupandehi in 2008. The flow of the product was traced forward and backward from the selected wholesaler respondents for selecting the farmer and the retailor respondents randomly. The marketing margin is higher in the farm to wholesale market as compared to the wholesale to retail market. The result revealed that the marketing cost, wholesale price of rice, retail prices of rice, and market information to the farmer significantly influence the marketing margin. Reduction in the transportation cost, improving the market information system, and improving the role of farmer in price determination help reduce the marketing margin. Abstract:
Samples from carcasses, personnel surfaces, equipment, and minced meat, packaged and displayed in cabinets were taken at a city abattoir, a wholesaler, and 10 different supermarkets. Bacteria enumerated were 1) psychrotrophs; 2) Enterobacteriaceae; 3) enterococci; 4) micrococci; 5) Pseudomonas spp; and 6) Brochothrix thermosphacta. The non integrated production system of abattoirs, wholesalers, and retailers yielded psychrotrophic and enterococci counts at retail which compared fairly well with those reported in literature, while the Enterobacteriaceae and micrococci counts were higher. Besides the psychrotrophs the pseudomonads were the most numerous group in the final product. Different surfaces were not sanitized with the same efficacy, while a general tendency towards lower counts at one supermarket group was monitored. The counts described 96% of the variation in the psychrotrophic count at the abattoir, while the success in using these counts in estimating the psychrotrophic count at the wholesaler and retailers was not as significant. At the abattoir the Enterobacteriaceae and psuedomonads were the biggest contributors to the psychrotrophic count, at the wholesaler the Enterobacteriaceae and micrococci counts, and at the retailers the micrococci and pseudomonads respectively. This indicates that Enterobacteriaceae might be common psychrotrophs in the meat production chain, maybe originating from the abattoir and wholesale environments.

Abstract:
AbstractResearch is based on wholesale and distribution operations of real-life case company, and in this setting, the most critical part of company’s supply chain is the inventory replenishment to warehouse (Distribution Center) as well as fulfilling and delivering customers’ orders. Different Economic Order Quantity (EOQ)-based models have been considered (Reorder Point, Reorder Point with pipeline on order inventory, and “pulse train”). Simulation system evaluates annual total logistics costs. Results show that in an environment, where local warehouse inventory levels are rather high and replenishment order quantity is rather small, it is important have frequent shipments divided in suitable intervals. In simulation model, this could be done e.g. with the use of “pulse train” function or incorporating pipeline on order inventory in order decision. The research findings are valid for a small-scale supply chain servicing small and geographically limited markets with clients assuming high customer service levels (e.g. 24-hours lead time). For bigger markets, the cross-docking based supply chain models are worth considering in simulations.

Lupo, Zoya Sara. "Impact of low carbon technologies on the British wholesale electricity market." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/33080.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the late 1980s, the energy sector in Great Britain has undergone some core changes in its functionality; beginning with the early 1990s privatisation, followed by an increased green ambition, and commencing a transition towards a low-carbon economy. As the British energy sector prepares itself for another major overhaul, it also puts itself at risk for not being sufficiently prepared for the consequences this transition will have on the existing generating capacity, security of supply, and the national electricity market. Upon meeting existing targets, the government of the United Kingdom risks becoming complacent, putting energy regulation to the backseat and focusing on other regulatory tasks, while introducing cuts for thriving renewable and other low-carbon energy generating technologies. The government has implemented a variety of directives, initiatives, and policies that have sometimes been criticised due to their lack of clarity and potential overlap between energy and climate change directives. The government has introduced policies that aim to provide stable short-term solutions. However, a concrete way of resolving the energy trilemma and some of the long-term objectives and more importantly ways of achieving them are yet to be developed. This work builds on analysing each low-carbon technology individually by assessing its past and current state in the British energy mix. By accounting for the changes and progress the technology underwent in its journey towards becoming a part of the energy capacity in Great Britain, its impact on the future wholesale electricity prices is studied. Research covered in this thesis presents an assessment of the existing and incoming low-carbon technologies in Great Britain and their individual and combined impact on the future of British energy economics by studying their implications for the electricity market. The methodological framework presented here uses a cost-minimisation merit order model to provide useful insights for novel methods of electricity production and conventional thermal energy generation to aid with the aftermath of potential inadequate operational and fiscal flexibility. The thesis covers a variety of scenarios differing in renewable and thermal penetration and examines the impact of interconnection, energy storage, and demand side management on the British wholesale electricity prices. The implications of increasing low-carbon capacity in the British energy mix are examined and compared to similar developments across Europe. The analysis highlights that if the optimistic scenarios in terms of green energy installation are followed, there is sufficient energy supply, which results in renewable resources helping to keep the wholesale price of electricity down. However, if the desired capacity targets are not met, the lack of available supply could result in wholesale prices going up, especially in the case of a natural gas price increase. Although initially costly, the modernisation of the British grid leads to a long-term decrease in wholesale electricity prices and provides a greater degree of security of supply and flexibility for all market participants.

Abstract:
This work has the objective of presenting the main changes in the Brazilian electrical sector institutional model, stating the whole environment and the reasons that motivated the deep changes occurred since 1995, strongly influencing the operation of the Brazilian Electrical System. It is expected that after this work it would be possible to get a better comprehension of these amendments, relating them to the context Electrical Sector history in Brazil. In order to recover the financial and expansion feasibility of the Brazilian Electric System, it was implemented the Project RE-SEB - Restructuring Project of the Brazilian Electric System in the mid of the 90, aiming at increasing the system capacity expansion, improving the appeal for private investments in efficient way, by stimulation the competition. This first stage of the sector reform has been the basis for the current model. The main result of the RE-SEB project was the creation of the Wholesale Electric Energy Market, a virtual environment for the trade in energy. In 2001 and 2002, it was necessary to rationing the electricity market, which deeply impacted the institutional model. In fact, the crisis was essential to open the eyes of society and industry to the need of further improvements, making clear the gaps that the Project RE-SEB has not filled in. In this context, the government beginning in 2003, established a new effort to improve the institutional model, giving rise to a new legal framework, taking advantage of the Re-SEB experience as well as incorporating the lessons learned during the period of rationing.

A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Economics from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
The purpose of this paper is to study the cost efficiency of multimunicipal systems operating at the bulk level in the Portuguese water sector. We will use Pooled OLS, Fixed Effects and Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) to study the role of structural variables such as water losses, network density, water sources, quality measures, rainfall and topography in explaining the cost differences among those systems. Moreover, using SFA we determine operators’ efficiency scores. We found that inefficiency of operators remained constant over time. The main source of the distance to the cost frontier is a high degree of inefficiency and not exogenous random shocks.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.C.P.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2009.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 85-91).
This thesis argues that food distribution systems must be strengthened in order to address the challenge of urban food access. The argument rests on a historical analysis of the supermarket industry and a comparative study of fresh produce sourcing in two Boston neighborhoods, North Dorchester and West Roxbury. Through a series of interviews with store owners, managers, distributors and wholesalers, the thesis illustrates the sourcing methods used by different store types (national supermarkets, local and regional supermarkets and small stores) in two neighborhoods of different incomes and different demographics. The findings reveal that store type, not store location, determines the sourcing method, of which there are two distinct systems: one for supermarkets and a secondary system for small and midsize stores. The regional wholesale produce market and local distributors play an essential role in supplying fresh fruits and vegetables to these smaller food stores, which are particularly important in low-income neighborhoods that tend to have fewer supermarkets. The thesis recommends public investment in wholesale markets and regional distribution systems to ensure that residents of urban neighborhoods have access to fresh food.

Abstract:
In the proposed monograph, optimization models for managing limited resources in logical systems are considered. Such systems are primarily used by industrial enterprises, transport companies and trade organizations, including those that carry out wholesale activities. As a rule, the efficiency of these objects largely depends on how rational use of limited resources such as: consumer camera business, labor, vehicles, etc. In this paper, various approaches to managing such resources are considered both for deterministic models and for the situation when a number of model parameters are not specified exactly, that is, for stochastic models. In this case, it is proposed to evaluate the stability of models to the occurrence of various types of risk events, both by the structure of the solution and by the functionality. It is addressed to senior students, postgraduates and masters studying in the specialty "Management" and "Logistics", as well as specialists in the field of logistics systems modeling.

Abstract:
AbstractAgainst the background of several European countries implementing capacity remuneration mechanisms (CRM) as an extension to the energy-only market (EOM), this chapter provides a quantitative assessment of the long-term cross-border effects of CRMs in the European electricity system. For this purpose, several scenario analyses are carried out using the electricity market model PowerACE. Three different market design settings are investigated, namely, a European EOM, national CRM policies, and a coordinated CRM. The introduction of CRMs proves to be an effective measure substantially shifting investment incentives toward the countries implementing the mechanisms. However, CRMs increase generation adequacy also in the respective neighboring countries, indicating that free riding occurs. A coordinated approach therefore seems preferable in terms of both lower wholesale electricity prices and generation adequacy.

Abstract:
AbstractSince the beginning of the energy sector liberalization, the design of energy markets has become a prominent field of research. Markets nowadays facilitate efficient resource allocation in many fields of energy system operation, such as plant dispatch, control reserve provisioning, delimitation of related carbon emissions, grid congestion management, and, more recently, smart grid concepts and local energy trading. Therefore, good market designs play an important role in enabling the energy transition toward a more sustainable energy supply for all. In this chapter, we retrace how market engineering shaped the development of energy markets and how the research focus shifted from national wholesale markets to more decentralized and location-sensitive concepts.
