Abstract:
For the past few decades there have been repeated calls from within and without the National Park Service for more inclusive interpretation in the park system. Concurrently there has been great concern about the lack of diversity among visitors to Park Service units. The 2009 Comprehensive Survey of the American Public, repeatedly cited in the popular press, reported that recent visitors to a Park Service unit were “disproportionately” “white, non-Hispanic.” This paper looks to problematize this survey and its conclusions that concern for the environment is predominantly white, that attendance at NPS sites is tantamount to national belonging, and that future support for NPS is threatened as the United States becomes majority nonwhite. The paper also looks to question the link between the racial and ethnic identity of visitors and “relevant” interpretation.

Abstract:
In this paper I explore white attempts to move toward a proactive position against racism that will amount to more than self-Criticism in the following three ways: by assessing the debate within feminism over white women's relation to whiteness; by exploring “white awareness training” methods developed by Judith Katz and the “race traitor” politics developed by Ignatiev and Garvey, and; a case study of white revisionism being currently attempted at the University of Mississippi.

Abstract:
In this article, the author uses the critical race theoretical construct of master narrative to explore historical and ideological assumptions about the Civil Rights Movement held by two Black youth in an urban community. Master narrative is defined as the dominant social mythologies that mute, erase, and neutralize features of racial struggle. Through a synthesis of literature by critical race theorists and critical social historians, the author outlines four themes present in master narratives about the Movement, and illustrates how each theme functions to reinforce ideologies of White supremacy. Through counterstory, the author examines ways in which these themes seem to constrain participants’ understandings of race, racism, and racial struggle. The author concludes posing questions to encourage urban social studies educators to think deeply about their historical content knowledge, curriculum, and classroom practices, and restating the need for continued exploration into the implications of master narrative in Black, urban students’ understandings of history and their contemporary conditions.

Abstract:
How do members of dominant groups, like White people in the United States, react when their privileged social status is threatened, for example, by the prospect of numeric decline? Prior studies identify two sets of reactions: (1) White people identify more strongly with ingroup members, and (2) they withhold material and symbolic resources from outgroup members. This study explores another possibility: White people may alter the boundary around Whiteness by redefining the criteria for membership. I use an original survey experiment to examine how demographic threat affects how White people in the United States classify people who are ambiguously White, and specifically people who are ambiguously White or Latino. The results reveal that White people are less—not more—likely to classify people who are ambiguously White or Latino as “White” under threat. The results contribute to a growing literature on the racial classification of multiracial and racially ambiguous people that has previously ignored ambiguity around the Latino category. They also speak to an active debate about demographic projections and the classification decisions on which they rest.

Abstract:
The presence of a white cane considerably aids blind and/or visually impaired people in Orientation and Mobility (OM). Their white cane was insufficient to meet all of their demands, such as marking puddles or marsh areas that would be traversed. As a result, the goal of this study is to construct white canes to aid blind and/or visually impaired people's orientation and mobility in wetland environments. This study used Research and Development model with a 4D design, which included processes such as defining, designing, developing, and disseminating. The participants were blind and/or visually impaired people living on wetland areas in South Kalimantan. Interviews, action tests, questionnaires and observations were used to collect data. To test the effectiveness and practicality of developing white canes, they were analyzed using descriptive statistics. This research resulted in a produced stick with an auditory capability that could detect impediments such as potholes, puddles, and fires while moving around and determine the location point using the Global Positioning System. The study findings revealed that the smart white cane created has an effectiveness of 82 percent when used with very effective criteria; however, the practicality is around 70% in practical criteria. In conclusion, the development of white canes can help blind and/or visually impaired people in mobility on wetland areas especially web based design.

Abstract:
Congratulations to the organisers of the ‘Unmasking Whiteness’ conference for their courage in putting on the first ever conference dealing specifically with Whiteness in Australia. It does indeed take courage given that whiteness is, I have found, a disturbing and perturbing topic, not only to white people but also, I believe, to people of colour.I'd therefore like to preface my paper by stating that I am speaking about my experience only, my life only, my interpretation only. I speak only for myself. I definitely am not speaking on behalf of others, especially other Aboriginal people. I state this up front, for just as whites who question their whiteness are often considered traitors to their race, I have found the same reaction when I have said to certain Aboriginal people who misunderstand my point and my pain: ‘I'd really like to be white, for a change’. Such a statement has been seen as a betrayal and a violation of Aboriginality when in fact it is a cry from the heart which has been ravaged by racism. Thus should anybody, black or white, be offended by my remarks, I take no responsibility for your interpretation, only for my intention, which is to share rather than to offend. I would also like to say that my paper is not an academic one, for which I make no apologies.

Abstract:
BackgroundGrey matter changes have been described in individuals who are pre- and peri-psychotic, but it is unclear if these changes are accompanied by changes in white matter structures.AimsTo determine whether changes in white matter occur prior to and with the transition to psychosis in individuals who are pre-psychotic who had previously demonstrated grey matter reductions in frontotemporal regions.MethodWe used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to examine regional white matter volume in 75 people with prodromal symptoms. A subset of the original group (n=21) were rescanned at 12–18 months to determine white matter volume changes. Participants were retrospectively categorised according to whether they had or had not developed psychosis at follow-up.ResultsComparison of the baseline MRI data from these two subgroups revealed that individuals who later developed psychosis had larger volumes of white matter in the frontal lobe, particularly in the left hemisphere. Longitudinal comparison of data in individuals who developed psychosis revealed a reduction in white matter volume in the region of the left fronto-occipital fasciculus. Participants who had not developed psychosis showed no reductions in white matter volume but increases in a region subjacent to the right inferior parietal lobule.DiscussionThe reduction in volume of white matter near the left fronto-occipital fasciculus may reflect a change in this tract in association with the onset of frank psychosis.
