Nelson, Christopher Mark. "Vibration-induced white finger in dockyard employees." Thesis, University of Southampton, 1992. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/192427/.

Full text
Abstract:
Vibration-induced white finger (VWF) is a vascular condition associated with occupational exposure to hand-transmitted vibration. The fingers are prone to intermittent blanching attacks which may be triggered by cold conditions and are usually accompanied by numbness and tingling or pain. VWF has been associated with the use of various tools and processes, among which are the percussive and rotary metal-working tools used in ship repair work. This thesis describes a study of dose-effect relationships for VWF in dockyard employees. A review of the literature revealed more than 40 epidemiological studies of VWF in workers using hand-held metal-working tools. Measurements of tool vibration have also been reported, but few researchers have combined epidemiological studies of VWF with measurements of the vibration exposures Involved. Some dose-effect relationships have been suggested and current standards contain tentative doseeffect guidance. Some recent authors have suggested that the frequency weighting and time-dependencies assumed In current standards are inadequate. Methods for the measurement of hand-transmitted vibration were assessed. The vibration characteristics of sixteen pneumatic tools commonly used in dockyard work were measured in the laboratory. Repeated measurements were made In three axes at each hand position and analysis included the computation of narrow-band spectra, acceleration magnitudes in octave bands and overall frequency-weighted and unweighted acceleration magnitudes. A survey of vibration-exposed employees in a dockyard was conducted by questionnaire. Information related to symptoms of VWF, and the history of use of vibrating tools was obtained from each individual. The severity of blanching in each affected individual was recorded using a scoring system. The severity and prevalence of symptoms were related to various measures of vibration 'dose' (i.e. combinations of measured vibration magnitudes and reported exposure times) by logistic regression and survival analysis. A highly significant relationship between VWF severity and exposure time was demonstrated. However, the use of frequency-weighted acceleration in dose calculations reduced the goodness of fit, while unweighted acceleration gave a small improvement in some cases. This suggests that higher frequencies in the range 6.3 Hz to 1250 Hz are of greater Importance than current standards imply. The effect of vibration magnitude was found to be small compared with that of exposure time and no clear effect of vibration direction or vibration frequency was demonstrated. No evidence was found for a time-dependency of the form assumed in current standards. It is possible that the risk of VWF may not be directly related to the vibration magnitude, but that a 'threshold' magnitude exists, below which the hazard is small and above which it is proportional to a function of the exposure time. Further Investigation of this hypothesis is recommended.

Abstract:
White Gilt This exhibition is a dissection of American masculinity and institutional oppression. The systematic mistreatment of people within certain social identity groups is supported and perpetuated by society. My work is a personal investigation of this flawed system, my place therein and its ramifications. The fragility of masculinity provokes immeasurable violence. Whiteness can be stereotyped as a toggle switch between bland culture, and self-entitled bigotry. These works are a confrontation with the dark parts of the human psyche, and the fears surrounding vulnerability, power and sexuality. Through discomfort we can deepen empathy and cultivate progress. Rather than to arrive at any conclusions, my goal for creating this narrative is to understand a tension between expectations: of systematic rationality and subjective knowledge, of play and display. I understand that my work productively fails to r-r-resolve contradictions about the way things are.

Bogasatswana: Rebuilding the Boat while Sailing, is an attempt to both transmit and disrupt a story-world whose make-up is based on my country of origin, Botswana. It is an exercise in worldbuilding through painting, wherein I establish post-colonial Botswana as a fictional place through the interrogation of gaps within the historicised national myths of the country and locate myself in said place and medium as a subject in the contemporary moment. Rather than the presentation of a fully realized fictional world, this project privileges the attempt at articulating a subjective world-version as informed by my positionality. As with solving a mathematical equation, I endeavour to show my working in the making visible of this space.

Abstract The purpose of the study was to investigate the professional chef, the road to success as well as to highlight which factors affects success. This study incorporated both a qualitative content analysis and qualitative interviews. Consequently to broaden the understanding of the affect in success of chef’s as well as media's influence. Results show a correlation between the informants perception on what requires to succeed in becoming a great cook. Hard work, extended knowledge and high commitment. The lack of leadership skills is believed to be the highest of priority for the industry to evolve in. Pressed media turns out to have a stereotypic angle when publicating articles of both male and female cooks as well as White guide that assesses the quality of these operations. Conclusively media has a large impact on the road to success of the professional chefs and how they are portaitet to the public eye. There seems to be a great difference in how female and male chefs appears in the pressed media. Further there are indications that organisations baring the judgement and quality assurance of the restaurant industry in part with the media glorifies the industry. Lastly there are apparent flaws who needs to be adjusted in the industry to ensure more hirings and meet the market in addition to the younger generation chefs higher demands. The younger generation has an extended awareness considering their terms and conditions. To improve the industry leadership skills, hiring terms and an increase in standard and quality needs to be reconstructed.       Keywords: Cook, influence of the media, restaurant industry, white guide

Pettersson, Hans. "Risk of hearing loss from combined exposure to hand-arm vibrations and noise." Doctoral thesis, Umeå universitet, Yrkes- och miljömedicin, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-64191.

Full text
Abstract:
Hearing loss from noise exposure is one of the most common occupational injuries, and exposure to vibrations may increase the risk of noise-induced hearing loss. Earlier cross-sectional and longitudinal studies found an increased risk of noise-induced hearing loss among workers with vibration-induced white fingers (VWF) symptoms compared to workers without such symptoms. It has been suggested that vibrations to the hand stimulate the sympathetic nervous system and cause vasoconstriction in both the exposed hand and the ears and that this contributes to noise-induced hearing loss. The overall aim of this thesis was to examine how hand-arm vibrations (HAV) interact with noise in the development of noise-induced hearing loss. The experimental study in this thesis examined the effects of HAV and noise, both separately and combined, on the temporary threshold shift (TTS) in hearing in 22 healthy male and female subjects. The two longitudinal studies in this thesis were based on a cohort of 189 male workers at a heavy engineering workshop. The first cohort study examined the risk of noise-induced hearing loss from long-term exposure to HAV and noise. The second cohort study examined if workers with VWF had an increased risk of noise-induced hearing loss compared to workers without such symptoms. Finally, the questionnaire study in this thesis examined the occurrence of Raynaud’s phenomenon among 133 men and women with noise-induced hearing loss in relation to exposure to vibrations. In the experimental study, no differences in TTS in hearing were observed after combined exposure to HAV and noise compared to exposure to only noise. In the first cohort study, there was an increased risk of noise-induced hearing loss with increased exposure to HAV in a noisy environment. In the second cohort study, it was found that workers with VWF had an increased risk of noise-induced hearing loss compared to workers without VWF. In the questionnaire study, many men and women with noise-induced hearing loss had used hand-held vibrating machines suggesting that vibrations might contribute to noise-induced hearing loss. A high prevalence of Raynaud’s phenomenon was found among men. This thesis demonstrated that there was a long-term effect on noise-induced hearing loss from combined exposure to noise and HAV, but no short-term effect, and that having Raynaud’s phenomenon may also increase the risk of noise-induced hearing loss.

Abstract:
The artist's process in which she examines the built environment through the medium of black and white photography. By tracing the trajectory of her awareness of architecture from her early career as a dancer, to the making of photographic images, the artist illuminates the process of deconstructing architectural and pictorial space into fragmented yet illusionistically convincing photographic montages. Influenced by the urban localities in which she dwells, she tells the story of being captivated by the post-industrial landscape of Williamsburg, Brookyn, NY, followed by landing in New Orleans and her fascination with post-Katrina architecture. Grounded in the analog techniques of traditional black and white photography, Levitsky describes the various means by which she alters her images to create visionary reconstructions of buildings in transitional states.

Dittler, Matthew Jason. "Ecology of Root-Feeding Insect Assemblages in Fire-Manipulated Longleaf Pine-Wiregrass Ecosystems." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/50858.

Full text
Abstract:
Root-feeding insects can have top-down influence on vegetative composition and ecosystem processes; however, they may respond to bottom-up factors such as soil resources, site productivity, and disturbance.  My research addressed the following questions: (1) Do disturbance (fire), vegetative composition, soil resources, and fine root standing mass influence the structure of root-feeding insect assemblages? (2) What types of roots do root-feeding insects eat, and do they forage selectively?  (3) Do root-feeding insects influence fine root productivity?  To address these questions, I studied root-feeding insect assemblages in longleaf pine wiregrass (Pinus palustris-Aristida stricta) ecosystems of southwestern Georgia, U.S.A.  On a random basis, study sites were burned at least every other year (B), or left unburned (UB) for about 9 years.  Fine root productivity and root-feeding insect abundances were sampled repeatedly across 54 random plots in UB and B sites.  In Chapter 2, I characterized spatial and temporal patterns of root-feeding insect abundance, understory plant composition, soil resource availability, and fine root standing mass within each plot.  Insect population densities were low overall, but abundance, patchiness, and diversity were greater in UB sites.  Abundance patterns were significantly related to vegetative composition.  In Chapter 3, I quantified the diet of root-feeding insects by measuring the natural abundance of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) stable isotopes in insects and fine roots.  Using 13C abundance, I examined the contribution of warm season grass roots to insect diet, relative to the proportion of warm season grass roots within adjacent root standing crop samples; 15N abundance was used to detect omnivory.  Overall, insects appeared to be non-selective herbivores and omnivores that may alter foraging behavior to maintain a mixed diet (i.e. reducing or increasing warm season grass consumption when its abundance was high or low, respectively).  The extent of omnivory varied within and among taxa.  In Chapter 4, I estimated the top-down influence of root-feeding insects on fine root productivity by comparison of ingrowth cores with or without an insecticide treatment.  I detected a weak positive effect of herbivores on the productivity of non-grass fine roots (< 10% of fine root productivity).

Abstract:
The photographic series Ideal Cities that I started in 2011 is inspired by the conflict between my idea of the “west” and my evolving experience in the United States. What struck me was the popularity of what I see as model experience – a spatial experience controlled by the Spectacle. In the terms of the Situationist International and its most prominent figure Guy Debord, the Spectacle is the collapse of reality into the streams of images, products and activities sanctioned by centralized monopolist business or state bureaucracy. Thus, personal experience is replaced with preconceived notions, which control the way people perceive and understand their surroundings.

Abstract:
The What If Collection is a visual narrative that confronts white supremacy, the social, economic, and political ideology used to subjugate black civilization via colonial rule and enslavement in history and via structural racism today. Many white people have been socialized into a racial illiteracy that fosters white supremacy. This racial illiteracy fails to realize and understand the destructive effects of Western dominance on the rest of the world, particularly on past and present Africa and her diaspora. In response, utilizing discursive design, the collection constructs a counter-story that depicts a shift in the power structure in which the white oppressor is placed in the historical experience of the black oppressed. Moving forward from the past, a contemporary society is visualized where black people are the dominant force.

Mazerolle, Erin L. "REFINEMENTS TO THE CURRENT UNDERSTANDING OF FUNCTIONAL MRI ACTIVATION IN WHITE MATTER." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10222/14999.

Full text
Abstract:
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a widely used, noninvasive technique to map brain activation, and has provided considerable insight into human brain function over the past two decades. Until recently, fMRI studies have focused on gray matter; however, reports of fMRI activation in white matter are mounting. White matter fMRI activation has the potential to greatly expand the breadth of brain connectivity research, as well as improve the assessment and diagnosis of white matter and connectivity disorders. Despite these potential benefits, white matter fMRI activation remains controversial. The controversy is partially due to the existence of incompletely understood facets of fMRI signals in white matter. This thesis describes three experiments that aim to refine what is currently known about white matter fMRI activation. In the first experiment, one of the main concerns about fMRI activation in white matter was addressed; namely, whether white matter has sufficient cerebrovascular reactivity to support hemodynamic changes that can be measured with fMRI. It was demonstrated that white matter has the capacity to support detectable hemodynamic changes in the absence of partial volume effects. In the second experiment, the effect of static magnetic field strength on sensitivity to white matter fMRI activation was explored as a possible cause of the relative paucity of reports of white matter fMRI activation. The results showed greater sensitivity to white matter fMRI activation at 4 T relative to 1.5 T MRI. In the third experiment, the relationship between white matter activation and the activated network of gray matter regions was explored. This was accomplished using fMRI-guided tractography in which structural connections between activated clusters are evaluated. Structural connectivity between white matter fMRI activation and regions of gray matter activation was demonstrated, providing evidence of the functional significance of fMRI activation in white matter. These experiments provide important insights, which will allow for improved investigations of white matter fMRI activation in the future. In addition, it is posited that experimenter bias, via selective reporting of activation clusters, has contributed to the slow acceptance of fMRI activation in white matter.

Passmoor, Ross P. "Understanding whiteness in South Africa with specific reference to the art of Brett Murray." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/1042.

Full text
Abstract:
The white male artist whose self-interrogation attaches to his whiteness, difference and former centrality, inevitably exposes himself to the critical scrutiny of current discourse on race and whiteness studies. In this dissertation I examine the concept and emergence of whiteness as a dominant construct in select socio-historical contexts, more particularly in the colonial sphere. While colonial whiteness has often failed to acknowledge or foreground the faceted nature of its composition, this became particularly marked in a South African context with polarisation in the political, cultural and linguistic spheres. However in encounters with the colonised, unifying pretensions of whiteness prevailed, reinforcing difference along racial lines. I examine the work of white South African male artist Brett Murray, in which the interrogation of whiteness and associated marginalization and invisibility is again foregrounded, but predominantly in a postcolonial context. As Murray cautiously navigates his satirical gaze at the culturally and conceptually flawed hybridity of South African (male) whiteness, he inadvertently exposes a nostalgic gaze at erstwhile racial centrality. I further consider whether as a postcolonial other Murray has in fact been able to transcend racially based self-interrogation by addressing more polemic issues associated with power, corruption and inhumanity that transcend race.

Jones, Linda Sheridan. "A feminist critique of the concept of home in the work of selected contemporary white South African female artists." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/8800.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation I analyse and contextualise stereotypical notions associated with the concept of home, and what that constitutes, in the work of South African artists Antoinette Murdoch, Bronwen Findlay, Doreen Southwood and Penelope Siopis, each of whom displays a different perspective of the concept in their artwork. I further consider how these selected South African artists engage with the dichotomies surrounding issues of home and the gendered position assigned to women in this area. I address the strategies the selected artists use in bringing the realm of the private sphere into the public arena and how they transgress the boundaries of private and public spaces. In addition I consider how concepts of home are reflected in my own work and how they are informed by a feminist perspective. The choice of white female artists as the subject of this research is a conscious one, in that I wish to avoid an investigation into cross-cultural gendered subjectivities which will inevitably become entangled with questions of race, politics and culture. As western feminist thought often tends to ignore the specific experiences of ethnic groups located outside western cultural experience, my focus on artists whose context is in part shared by my own is intended to provide an insider perspective. In the context of this research, 'home' is defined as a traditionally acknowledged place where woman is identified in relation to domesticity and the family unit. The term 'home' is therefore partly applicable to a type of domestic environment regardless of its geographic and cultural associations. Home has been defined as a 'group of persons sharing a home or living space (whereas) most households consist of one person living alone, a nuclear family, an extended family or a group of unrelated people' (Scott and Marshall 2005:276). The home is regarded as a place of security where the most intimate of relationships takes place, but it is also an arena of complex human relationships associated with domestic, family, personal and cultural identity. The home is further regarded as a private space and as being somewhat inaccessible, as opposed to the public domain which is open to scrutiny. The home houses a corridor of emotion, however, and may often become a place of entrophy. A subtle shifting and subverting of the conventions which society places upon women and men to conform to particular behavioural constructs will be deconstructed to reveal the concept of home as a site where the boundaries between reality and illusion become blurred. My own artistic practice is concerned with the deconstruction of the home as an idealised space and the façade that often conceals a dystopian reality that lurks beneath such idealisation. I share assumed cultural and class values with the selected artists and will critique the subject from a personal perspective, in part as a self-narrative. Within the context of this research, the term 'middle class' is defined as 'the class of society between the upper and working classes, including business and professional people' (The Oxford English Dictionary 1994:509).

Abstract:
The first chapter is a broad review of the recent history of Chinese porcelain from the Ming period to the present day. It includes remarks on the ceramics town of Jingdezhen and on aspects of materials, construction techniques, glazing and enamelling as well as a brief summary of the types of wares. The second chapter is divided into two parts. The first part introduces the formation of the Tatham Art Gallery and the Whitwell Collection. The second part focuses, firstly, on the blue and white porcelain, secondly, on the enamelled porcelain. The pieces are individually physically examined and catalogued under these headings: General description, rim, foot ring, construction, iconography and motifs, glazes, marks and date. The last chapter compares the blue and white pieces, the enamelled pieces and both pieces. This chapter suggests the qualities and special attributes of the wares such as brush marks.
