Abstract:
The very existence of such athing as the “Australian Western” has been the subject of scholarly debate. This article utilizes the lens of Ned Kelly filmic representations to explore the development of the Western genre in Australia, and especially the ways in which historical consonances and dissonances, and processes of transatlantic cultural exchange have led to the development of films that can be reasonably recognized as both distinctly Western and distinctly Australian. Thus, this article gives consideration to the history, production and themes of Ned Kelly filmic representation in order to illuminate the development of the Western in Australia. Such consideration highlights the ways in which the Western genre functions as alanguage through which to explore the meaning of settlement in occupied spaces, but whose dialectic differences reflect particular national contexts and relationships to Hollywood soft power.„TAKI JEST WESTERN” — PRZEGLĄD AUSTRALIJSKIEGO WESTERNU NA PODSTAWIE FILMÓW O NEDZIE KELLYMSamo istnienie czegoś takiego jak „australijski western” jest tematem akademickiej dyskusji. Abstract:
Harpobittacus Gerstaecker is the largest of the six genera of Australian Bittacidae. Adults occur in eastern, south-eastern and south-western Australian eucalypt woodland and coastal heathland during spring and summer and sometimes autumn. The genus contains 11 species, which are diagnosed in the present revision: H. australis (Klug) [= australis rubripes Riek, syn. nov., = corethrarius (Rambur), = intermedius (Selys-Longchamps)] (south-east Australia, including Tasmania); H. albatus Riek, stat. nov. (= limnaeus Smithers, syn. nov.) (coastal eastern Australia); H. christine, sp. nov. (inland south-east Queensland); H. tillyardi Esben-Petersen ( = nigratus Navás) (coastal eastern Australia); H. rubricatus Riek (inland south-east Australia); H. scheibeli Esben-Petersen (= brewerae Smithers, syn. nov.) (inland and coastal eastern Australia); H. septentrionis, sp. nov. (coastal north Queensland); H. nigriceps (Selys-Longchamps) (mainland south-east Australia); H. similis Esben-Petersen, H. quasisimilis, sp. nov., and H. phaeoscius Riek (all south-west Western Australia). Cladistic analysis has produced the following hypothesis of relationships: (((australis (albatus christine)) (tillyardi rubricatus)) ((similis quasisimilis) ((scheibeli septentrionis) (nigriceps phaeoscius))). Immediate sister-species show little or no overlap in their geographic distributions.

Abstract:
This introductory article maps out the main directions to be observed in contemporary transnational Westerns. It looks specifically at three areas beyond the United States where the films in the Western genre have assumed the most symptomatic forms: Europe, Australia and Japan. European Westerns seem to comprise awider scope of artistic possibilities offered by the genre than elsewhere, as they subscribe to one of the following models: apopular action/sensational formula, an artistic engagement with the convention, or aparody. The Australian Western is related to the American genre primarily through historical analogies, while the Japanese Western has developed thanks to the similarity of the archetypal plots of U.S. Westerns and Japanese samurai films. WSPÓŁCZESNE WESTERNY TRANSNARODOWE: TRAJEKTORIE I KONSTELACJEArtykuł omawia pokrótce główne tendencje we współczesnych westernach transnarodowych. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na trzy obszary geograficzne, gdzie gatunek przybrał w ostatnich kilkunastu latach najbardziej symptomatyczne formy: Europę, Australię i Japonię. Westerny europejskie dają najszerszy przegląd możliwości kreacyjnych i oscylują między trzema modelami: film akcji, parodia i artystyczny dialog z konwencją. Westerny australijskie korespondują z amerykańskimi przede wszystkim z uwagi na analogie historyczne, a produkcje japońskie — z racji podobieństw archetypów obecnych w westernach i filmach samurajskich. przeł. Abstract:
During the past five years, the Onshore Energy Security Program, funded by the Australian Government and conducted by Geoscience Australia, in conjunction with state and territory geological surveys, has acquired deep seismic reflection data across several frontier sedimentary basins to stimulate petroleum exploration in onshore Australia. This extended abstract presents data from two seismic lines collected in Western Australia in 2011. The 487 km long Yilgarn-Officer-Musgrave (YOM) seismic line crossed the western Officer Basin in Western Australia, and the 259 km long, Southern Carnarvon Seismic line crossed the Byro Sub-basin of the Southern Carnarvon Basin. The YOM survey imaged the Neoproterozoic to Devonian western Officer Basin, one of Australia's underexplored sedimentary basins with hydrocarbon potential. The survey data will also provide geoscientific knowledge on the architecture of Australia's crust and the relationship between the eastern Yilgarn Craton and the Musgrave Province. The Southern Carnarvon survey imaged the onshore section of the Ordovician to Permian Carnarvon Basin, which offshore is one of Australia's premier petroleum-producing provinces. The Byro Sub-basin is an underexplored depocentre with the potential for both hydrocarbon and geothermal energy. Where the seismic traverse crossed the Byro Sub-basin it imaged two relatively thick half graben, on west dipping bounding faults. Structural and sequence stratigraphic interpretations of the two seismic lines are presented in this extended abstract.

Abstract:
The genus Planchonia Blume is reviewed for Australia with two species recognised. Planchonia rupestris R.L. Barrett is described as a new species apparently endemic to the sandstone plateaux of the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Lectotypes are designated for Cumbia australis Britten, Planchonia crenata Miers and Planchonia arborea var. australis Benth., each of which are synonyms of Planchonia careya (F.Muell.) Kunth. Illustrations, distribution maps and a key to the Australian species are presented.
