Abstract:
In questa tesi si applica un’indagine multidisciplinare guidata dall’analisi strutturale per studiare l’evoluzione tettono-metamorfica di rocce ultrafemiche appartenenti a unità ofiolitiche affiorati nella parte occidentale delle Alpi o intrappolate nel basamento prealpino durante la collisione varisica. L’analisi si focalizza sulla Zona Zermatt-Saas (ZSZ) in alta Valtournanche (AO), al contatto di questa zona e la parte esterna del bordo meridionale della Zona Sesia Lanzo nella Valli del Tesso e del Tessuolo (TO) e nel Massiccio dell’Argentera, in alta Valle Gesso (CN). Le prime due aree si trovano nella Zona Piemontese che include unità derivanti da litosfera oceanica ristrutturate durante la convergenza alpina. L’ultima zona è situata nei Massicci Cristallini Esterni delle Alpi che includono in prevalenza rocce di origine continentale con scarsi relitti di rocce di probabile origine oceanica, ristrutturate e pervasivamente riequilibrate durante il ciclo Varisico. L’analisi meso- e micro-strutturale è stata integrata dall’analisi minero-chimica, dalle stime termo-barometriche e dalla modellazione petrologica delle associazioni di minerali metamorfici all’equilibrio, dalla datazione radiometrica dei fabric e dall’analisi geochimica di micro-domini selezionati. Le serpentinite di Créton in Valtournanche sono state interpretate come una scaglia di litosfera originariamente adiacente alla dorsale medio oceanica della Tetide Alpina, metasomatizzata e percolata da Fe- e Mg-gabbri, che ha raggiunto condizioni di ultra alta pressione (UHP) durante la convergenza Alpina, come registrato dalle associazioni a Ti-chondrodite e Ti-clinohumite, precedentemente allo sviluppo della foliazione di alta pressione, dominante a scala regionale, e datata a 60-70 Ma. Il paragone delle condizioni metamorfiche registrate con un modello numerico di subduzione Alpina ha convalidato l’evoluzione ricostruita e ha permesso di restaurarne la posizione nel sistema di subduzione in funzione dell’evoluzione termo-barica dedotta per queste rocce. La serpentinite di Gias Vej in Valle del Tesso ha registrato un’evoluzione strutturale comune alle rocce ofiolitiche e continentali ad essa adiacenti e ha raggiunto un picco metamorfico eclogitico, come testimoniato dalle paragenesi di alta pressione a Ti-clinohumite, durante la subduzione Alpina. Presso il Lago Brocan dell’alta valle Gesso in Argentera, boudins di serpentinite e diopsidite, associati a boudins di anfibolite e marmi, si trovano avvolti e allineati dalla foliazione migmatitica regionale di età tardo-Varisica. Essi verosimilmente rappresentano, analogamente alle rocce Alpine studiate, i relitti della sutura dell’oceano Reico, riequilibrati in condizioni di alta temperatura-bassa pressione e trasposti durante la collisione Varisica ed il successivo collasso tardo orogenico. In conclusione, i risultati ottenuti mostrano come l’utilizzo integrato di tecniche laboratoriali e modellistiche, basate su un solido lavoro di terreno, possano descrivere e individuare unità tettono-metamorfiche nei domini di affinità oceanica in catene montuose risultanti da uno o più cicli di Wilson e dare un contributo alla ricostruzione delle loro evoluzione geodinamica, anche quando scaglie di crosta oceanica sono frammentate e disperse nella cicatrice profonda di un’antica sutura continentale.
The tectono-metamorphic evolution of serpentinites and associated rocks has been investigated in the Alpine ophiolitic Piemontese Zone (PZ) – in the Zermatt-Saas Zone (ZSZ) and near the Sesia-Lanzo Zone (SLZ) rim – and in the Variscan migmatites of the Argentera External Crystalline Massif (ECM). Materials selected for laboratory work contain sequences of meso- and microstructural imprints containing parts of the tectonic evolution of both mono- and poly-orogenic environments (in our case the Piemontese Zone in the Penninic of the Western Alps and the Argentera EMC – Provençal domain of the Alpine collisional front at the Alpine belt termination within the Western Mediterranean). In the Zermatt-Saas Zone serpentinite of Valtournanche, meso- and microstructural analyses have been coupled with petrological investigation, geochemistry, and radiometric dating. In Valtournanche, Créton serpentinite has been interpreted as a slice of mid-ocean ridge lithosphere, affected by gabbroic percolation and hydrothermalism, deeply involved in the Alpine subduction complex, reaching UHP conditions (2.9-3.3 GPa and 600-630 °C) prior to be exhumed at HP conditions 60-70 Ma and incorporated in a mix of slices of oceanic material of heterogeneous origin and metamorphic evolution. Gias Vej serpentinite registered Eclogite facies conditions and was coupled with slices of continental material at the southern border of the Sesia Lanzo Zone before the record of Pmax conditions. At Lake Brocan in Valle Gesso, remnants of serpentinised spinel lherzolite and diopsidite are suggested to represent a most probable vestigial suture zone of the Rheic Ocean in the External Crystalline Massif of Argentera; this relict survived repeated transpositions and dismembering during migmatisation of the deep Variscan crust related to Variscan continental collision. The obtained results indicate that investigation of ultramafic rocks by a structure-driven multidisciplinary approach, can unravel the most complete memory of the divergent and convergent tectonic evolution of old oceans. Similar investigation strategies of laboratory procedures, based on solid structural fieldwork, may more diffusely support circumscription of tectonic units in ocean-derived sequences and contribute to redefine their translational tectonic trajectories during mountain-building processes.

Western prairie clover [Dalea ornata (Douglas ex Hook.) Eaton & J. Wright] is a perennial legume that occurs in the northern Great Basin, Snake River Basin, and southern Columbia Plateau, whereas Searls prairie clover [Dalea searlsiae (A. Gray) Barneby], also a perennial legume, occurs in the southern Great Basin and surrounding areas. Understanding the genetic and ecotypic variation of these prairie clovers is a prerequisite for developing populations suitable for rangeland revegetation in the western USA. DNA sequences of internal transcribed spacer (ITS/5.8S) and trnK/matK were used to study the phylogeny of these species. The species were distinguished by DNA sequences from both regions and conserved haplotypes were observed between and within species. Common-garden plots of 22 collections of western prairie clover from Idaho, Oregon, and Washington and 20 collections of Searls prairie clover from Utah and Nevada were established in northern Utah for phenotypic evaluation. Significant variation was detected among the collections for all traits measured in the common gardens for both species. Flowering date was correlated with collection-site temperature and elevation in western prairie clover collections, whereas biomass-related traits were closely related with collection-site precipitation in Searls prairie clover. Population structure from amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers resulted in two distinct, genetically differentiated groups and a third admixed group in western prairie clover, and flowering date played a significant role in discriminating those genetic-based groupings of collections. For western prairie clover, two populations are recommended for development, one from the Deschutes River watershed and another from the remaining collections. For Searls prairie clover, two genetically different groups of collections were identified from southern Utah and eastern Nevada and from northwestern Utah. Three western Nevada collections exhibited close association with eastern Nevada and southern Utah groups for AFLP-markers but with collections from northwestern Utah for phenotypic traits. Strong isolation by distance was observed for Searls prairie clover collections suggesting that genetic drift and gene flow are major factors for determining population structure in this species. As a result, two regional seed sources should be developed for Searls prairie clover, one from northwestern Utah and the other from eastern Nevada and southern Utah.

Substance abuse among adolescents is a global problem and South Africa is no exception. In the Western Cape there is an alarming popularity and increased use of an illicit highly addictive substance, locally known as 'tik-tik'/methamphetamine. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the neurotoxic effects of this substance and there is an urgent need to address the 'tik-tik' problem in the Westen Cape. Tik/methamphetamine has thus become a great concern to educators, social workers and health practitioners in the province. The goal of this study was to explore the life-world of the adolescent methamphetamine/'tik-abusers' in order to describe their experiences of personal, social and environmental issues in the process of tik-addiction.

Abstract:
The focus of this study was to better understand the state of homeless services in Western Riverside County’s unincorporated areas and cities. Though various services are available to the homeless in these areas, the distance between the appropriate services and some residential parts of the county can be vast. This study sought to obtain an understanding from the administrators of homeless services providers on the deficiencies in services across the county, striving to understand where and what type of increased services are needed. This study used a qualitative research design. Data were collected from nine homeless service administrators from around Western Riverside County using face-to-face recorded interviews. This study found that greater services to help those suffering from mental illness or those unable to afford housing were needed. This study also found that increased collaboration between agencies has been working to improve services. It is recommended that homeless agencies continue working together in collaboration to increase the effectiveness of services and to bring the needed funding which will sustain and increase the services required to end homelessness in Western Riverside County.

Western aesthetic convention represents an accrual of inherited societal perspectives on the artist, the artifact and its consumer. A review of its history and the etymology of its terminology discloses a twofold problem. The first aspect concerns the separation of the manufacture of aesthetic objects from their economic raison d'etre. The second involves the categorization of these artifacts into art or craft. This problem is compounded when considering Western judgements on non-Western aesthetics. Inuit handicraft provides an appropriate model to illustrate the fact that present convention and nomenclature prove inadequate in addressing both intra and especially extra-cultural concerns. A broader and more inclusive orientation is needed.

The subculture of gang violence has become a most feared phenomenon in many povertystricken communities in South Africa and especially in the Western Cape. The gang violence that is prevalent in these communities affects mostly the adolescents, who are supposed to be &lsquo
the leaders of tomorrow&rsquo
. The purpose of this research study was to focus on adolescents in a community where gang violence is rife and in turn reveals their perceptions on gang violence, what the causes of gang violence are and how they are affected by it as expressed in their own words. The researcher establishes the significance and necessity of focusing on adolescents as influenced by gang violence through a phenomenological exploration of their lives. The position that is developed affirms that adolescents are adversely affected by gang violence both from a behavioral and cognitive standpoint. The dire extent of gang violence on these adolescents&rsquo
lives is illustrated by using Fanon&rsquo
s six dimensions of violence. Furthermore various theoretical hypotheses are provided to explain the or igin of gang violence in comparison to the explanations expressed by the adolescents themselves from the interviews conducted. The study is concluded with recommendations extracted from relevant literature as well as comments expressed by the participants of this study. The main limitation within this study was the lack of research outputs within the South African context on the topic of how gang violence affects adolescents who are not gang members. The rich information produced by this study in conducting in-depth interviews with adolescents makes this study significant.

Abstract:

Numerous theories were established as to why doctors are leaving the country. A collection of stressors have presented itself and are seen as the contributing factors that lead to the outflow of doctors to other countries. Masia et al (2010) suggest that heavy workloads, afterhour calls, conflicts between work and personal lives, and dealing with life and death situations are stressors that form part of the daily routine of medical practitioners as well as financial pressures, insufficient budgets, a challenging working environment, information overload and threats of litigation can threaten the health and well-being of the medical practitioner. Various reasons contributed to doctor&rsquo
s leaving the country and can be explained and addressed by the push-pull theory of migration. Investigations were conducted to identify the reasons for doctors leaving the country. The significant push factors that were identified as most frequently noted in investigations were poor remuneration and wages, lack of job satisfaction, lack of future prospects (further education and career development), poor working conditions, HIV/AIDS, lack of quality of life, high levels of crime and violence, civil conflict and political instability, and a decline in the quality of the school education system. Relevant non-financial incentives shown to be significant in retaining medical practitioners include support, teamwork and feedback from supervisors. Training and recognition was also noted by medical practitioners as deciding factors on whether to stay in a rural area. South Africa has witnessed a major outflow of doctors that have left the country to seek employment elsewhere and has been seen as a potential problem for the near future. However, not enough research has been conducted to study the various sources of stress and determine ways in which to combat these stressors. This study aims to present an understanding of the various sources of stress that doctors face on a daily basis and also distinguish between various coping mechanisms. A sample of 150 doctors was used for the purpose of this study and was selected primarily from 3 Western provincial hospitals. Informed consent was obtained from the relevant authorities before participating in the study. A 36-item Stressor Checklist and a Ways of coping checklist, which were adapted from previous research, were administered. No significant differences in sources of stress were found, although males evaluated their experiences as being more stressful. Significant differences were, however, obtained in terms of coping mechanisms utilised. Female doctors had a greater propensity to utilise problem and appraisal-focused coping. However, males were more apt to utilise avoidance-coping. The research findings indicate a need for further research to be done, and can be highly beneficial for the purpose of therapeutic intervention.

The Table Mountain group aquifer system has the potential to be an important supply of water. Although the aquifer system is used to some extent, a number of aspects relating to the aquifer system are poorly understood and unquantified. This study aimed to take into consideration the importance of differenct ecosytems, which is essential in predicting the effects of groundwater abstruction. However, the ecological requirements of systems that depend on groundwater are poorly understood. This project identified "

Absenteeism can be a major problem for organisations. As pressures increase on the budgets and competitiveness of companies, more attention is being given to reduce workplace absenteeism and its cost. Job satisfaction has been noted as one of the factors influencing an employee's motivation to attend. Studies on the relationship between absenteeism and job satisfaction seem to be inconsistent. Some research has found no correlation between these two variables whereas other studies indicate a weak to moderate relationship between these two variables. The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between job satisfaction and absenteeism in a selected department within and Electricity Unit in the Western Cape.

Moreover, literature also suggests that downsizing and cost-cutting negatively impacts on the satisfaction and commitment of employees and impacts on the effectiveness of organisations. The contention is that in order to reconcile the need to achieve high quality and organisational effectiveness in an environment of declining per capita resources and change, it will be necessary to secure a high level of commitment and satisfaction from all those employed in the higher education sector. This study sought to investigate the factors that produce commitment and satisfaction in academic and support staff respectively and to understand any important similarities and differences that may exist.

Increasingly, organisations are realising that they have to establish an equitable balance between the employee&rsquo
s contribution to the organisation and the organisation&rsquo
s contribution to the employee. Establishing this balance is one of the main reasons to reward and recognise employees. Organisations that follow a strategic approach to creating this balance focus on the three main components of a reward system, which includes, compensation, benefits and recognition (Deeprose, 1994). Studies that have been conducted on the topic indicates that the most common problem in organisations today is that they miss the important component of recognition, which is the low-cost, high-return ingredient to a well-balanced reward system. A key focus of recognition is to make employees feel appreciated and valued (Sarvadi, 2005). Research has proven that employees who get recognised tend to have higher self-esteem, more confidence, more willingness to take on new challenges and more eagerness to be innovative (Mason, 2001). The aim of this study is to investigate whether rewards and recognition has an impact on employee motivation. A biographical and Work Motivation Questionnaire was administered to respondents (De Beer, 1987). The sample group (N= 184) consists of male and female employees on post-grade levels 5 to 12. The results of the research indicated that there is a positive relationship between rewards, recognition and motivation. The results also revealed that women, and employees from non-white racial backgrounds experienced lower levels of rewards, recognition and motivation. Future research on the latter issues could yield interesting insights into the different factors that motivate employees. Notwithstanding the insights derived from the current research, results need to be interpreted with caution since a convenience sample was used, thereby restricting the generalisability to the wider population.

This work centered on the tadpoles in a temporaray pond in the middle of Kenilworth racecourse, Cape Town, South Africa. Trapping was carried out over two wet seasons and five species were found. The racecourse was selected to investigate the tadpole community occupying temporary winter pools. The main focus of this study was the community of tadpoles that occur in the ephemeral ponds in the centre of Kenilworth Racecourse. This study was a very broad insight into tadpole ecology in the Western Cape.

It has become imperative to challenge the present situation in which crime has become one of the most attractive options facing our youth. Through a programme of contructive engagement, a substantial difference can be made in their rehabilitation and ultimately their active participation in building a safer society. A strong emphasis should be placed on the development and implementation of effective restorative justice principles, alternative sentencing and community-based rehabilitation programmes, particularly for young people in marginalised communities.

Planning administration in the Western Cape is at a critical juncture. It is faced with having to address planning issues and housing needs whilst at the same time demonstrating through its practices the promotion of environmentally sustainable development. This paper will discuss planning and environmental legislation and the impact that the application of the legislation has on development proposals. Current legislation addresses issues of spacial development in developed areas and new development proposals but lacks the ability to address issues within informal settlements. Although socio-economic factors are not currently considered when assessing the viability of applications, the courts seem to consider these factors. Since new housing settlements are often developed for the poor and industrial developments in close proximity to these areas have direct impact on these individuals, planning could only gain if these factors are taken into consideration.

If planning administration in the Western Cape is to continue successfully and without endless litigation against the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning administrators will have to find a balance between promoting development and protecting the environment. To promote environmentally sustainable developments will require closer cooperation between the land use planning and environmental management components. The loopholes, which permit incremental development in the present legislation, have to be identified and addressed. Guidelines, which will standardize the conditions under which applications can be approved or refused, will have to be drafted to ensure decision-making that is consistent and defensible. If having a liquor store within an affluent environment is not considered desirable such applications should not be considered within lower income areas. The same should apply when dealing with applications to establish factories or industry which will have an impact on the living conditions of communities in close proximity. The MEC will have to ensure that all decision taken are within the legal framework and that such decisions benefit entire communities and protect the rights of the poorest communities as well as that of the wealthy and influential.

Environmental legislation and the growing importance of environmental protection is also having an impact on the way in which new settlements are planned and on the rights of property owners. Although, we are responsible for the preservation of the environment for the next generation, socio-economic conditions, HIV and a myriad of other considerations may have to take precedence over environmental concerns.

This study is aimed at investigating the feasibility of using the radiometric technique as an alternative to traditional methods for determining soil physico-chemical parameters which are important for terroir characterization. In-situ and ex-situ radiometric analyses of soil from three vineyard blocks of Simonsig Wine Estate in the Stellenbosch district (Western Cape, South Africa) were studied. A mobile MEDUSA gamma-ray detection system comprising a CsI(Na) crystal (length 15 cm, diameter 7 cm) and associated electronics mounted on a portable trolley were used for partial terroir characterisation. Thereafter activity concentrations of 40K, 232Th series and 238U series in soil (top ~30 cm) from the measured MEDUSA spectra (0 – 3 MeV) were extracted by means of the full-spectrum analysis (FSA) method. A lead-shielded HPGe detector was used for analyzing collected soil samples while soil physico-chemical parameters were analysed using standard methods at research and commercial laboratories.

Dubinsky, 2000). Extrinsic factors, also known as hygiene factors or dissatisfiers, have to do with a person's relationship to the context or environment in which she or he performs a job (Buitendach &
De Witte, 2005
Mehta et al., 2000). Some individuals are highly motivated by both intrinsic and extrinsic rewards. This is supported in a study amongst medical students (Beswick, 2002). In another study by Shim, Gehrt and Goldsberry (1999), it was found that students entering a career in retail viewed intrinsic aspects as the most important predictor of a retail career, followed by lifestyle flexibility aspects and then extrinsic aspects. Furthermore, research within a service organisation has indicated that various biographical factors have an influence on work motivation (Bezuidenhout, 2001). However, limited research has been conducted to determine whether biographical factors have an influence on work motivation within the retail industry.

The aim of the study was to investigate the motivation of retail managers in a retail organisation in the Western Cape. Furthermore, it investigates whether the motivation levels of retail managers are influenced by their biographical variables. The Work Satisfaction and Motivation Questionnaire developed by De Beer (1987) and a self-developed biographical questionnaire was administered to elicit work content, promotion, supervision, reward and recognition in relation to work motivation. The questionnaires were distributed to the target population (n=236) of retail managers which were inclusive of store managers, store assistant managers and department managers. Convenience sampling was used to draw a sample (n=109) of male and female retail managers. Statistical analyses involved both descriptive and inferential statistics (ANOVA, Multiple Regression Analysis, Pearson&rsquo
s Correlation Co-efficient and Scheffe&rsquo
s test). The results revealed that there is a significant positive relationship between the investigated dimensions of work motivation and satisfaction. It was found that the investigated dimensions of motivation only account for 49.5% of the variance in total motivation experienced by retail managers. Furthermore, significant differences were found between the biographical variables and responses to the questionnaire. It is suggested, for future research that a proportionate stratified random sample be drawn which will allow the findings of the study to be reliably generalised to the population. Furthermore, it is also recommended that future research consider dimensions of motivation, such as, achievement, responsibility, security, autonomy, feedback and morale, which are not investigated in this study.
