Abstract:
In this paper we analyze an asymmetric 2 × 2 buffered switch, fed by two independent Bernoulli input streams. We derive the joint equilibrium distribution of the numbers of messages waiting in the two output buffers. This joint distribution is presented explicitly, without the use of generating functions, in the form of a sum of two alternating series of product-form geometric distributions. The method used is the so-called compensation approach, developed by Adan, Wessels, and Zijm.

Abstract:
The aim of this article is to provide a critical review of the theories and the model used in the field of geometry education research. The article critically discusses van Hiele’s theory, Fischbein’s theory of figural concepts, Duval’ s theory of figural apprehension, the Spatial Operational Capacity (SOC) model by Wessels and van Niekerk, and the Sfard’s commognition theory. The van Hiele’s theory proposed a sequential order of development through which the learners construct their understanding of geometry concepts. Fischbein’ s theory of figural concepts suggested that a geometric figure is always comprised of a visible representation and a concept. Duval’s theory of figural apprehension underscored the heuristic value of a geometry figure for solving geometry problems. The SOC model by Wessels and van Niekerk emphasised the importance of instructional design incorporating a variety of physical and mental objects to work with to develop geometry concepts. Finally, the article discusses Sfard’s commognition theory that emphasises the communicative function of language in developing geometry concepts. There are two major concerns highlighted with respect to these theories and the model. Firstly, these theories and model emphasise the development of the two-dimensional geometry concepts, neglecting the development of the concepts of three-dimensional geometry. Secondly, these theories and the model fail to acknowledge the multilingual context of geometry class. The article aims to highlight the dearth of studies that explore the multilingual context of geometry class and calls for future studies in this direction.

Abstract:
Abstract A new mineral species, meieranite, ideally Na2Sr3MgSi6O17, has been found in the Wessels mine, Kalahari Manganese Fields, Northern Cape Province, South Africa. It occurs in isolated aggregates embedded in a matrix mainly of sugilite, along with minor aegirine and pectolite. Crystals of meieranite are up to 0.5 × 0.5 × 0.4 mm in size. No twinning is observed. The mineral is light blue to blue in transmitted and under incident lights, transparent with white streak, and has vitreous luster. It is brittle and has a Mohs hardness of 5.5; cleavage is good on {010} and no parting was observed. The measured and calculated densities are 3.41(3) and 3.410 g/cm3, respectively. Optically, meieranite is biaxial (–), with α = 1.610(1), β = 1.623(1), γ = 1.630(1) (white light), 2V (meas.) = 70(1)°, 2V (calc.) = 72°. The calculated compatibility index based on the empirical formula is –0.007 (superior). An electron microprobe analysis yields an empirical formula (based on 17 O apfu) of Na1.96(Sr2.91Ba0.03Ca0.03Pb0.02)Σ2.99(Mg0.62Mn0.28Co0.07Fe0.01)Σ0.98Si6.03O17, which can be simplified to Na2Sr3MgSi6O17. Meieranite is orthorhombic, with space group P21nb and unit-cell parameters a 7.9380(2), b 10.4923(3), c 18.2560(6) Å, and V 1520.50(8) Å3. Its crystal structure is characterized by two kinds of layers that alternate along [010]: layers of corner-sharing SiO4 and M2+O4 tetrahedra (M2+ = Mg, Mn, Co, Fe) and layers of NaO6 and SrO8 polyhedra. The tetrahedral layers consist of eight-, five-, and four-membered rings and are composed of [Si6O17] ribbons (parallel to [101]) linked together by MO4 tetrahedra. Most remarkably, the structure of meieranite is topologically identical to that of the nordite group of minerals, which has the general chemical formula Na3SrR3+M2+Si6O17, where R = Ce and La and M = Zn, Fe, and Mn. Accordingly, chemically, meieranite may be obtained through the coupled substitution of 2Sr2+ for (Na+ + R3+) in nordite.

Abstract:
In spite of its importance in European Union decision making, research on the functioning of the Council is scarce (Wessels, 1991). Based on empirical findings this article gives some new insights in the way Council decision making is institutionalized. The first part focusses on the characteristics of Council working groups and the different positions of actors in the decision making network. Our findings confirm the definition of the Council as a highly bureaucratized institution. Interesting is that the diversity of tasks of the different actors(working groups, Coreper, CSA etc.) strengthens the impact of national administrations in Council decision making. The second part explores the reasons for this impact. This article adds to the functional approach, which over-emphasizes the adaptive character of the Council, the perception of the Council as an intergovernmental component in a supranational system.

Abstract:
Two months old moose calves exhibiting neurological signs were videotaped, killed and necropsied. The parasite Elaphostrongylus alces (Steen et al 1989) was found epidurally along the meninges of the spinal cord, and in the muscle faciae of the thoracic and lumbar regions. Progressive inflammatory processes were present in the epineurium, perineurium and endoneurium. Accumulations of inflammatory cells, eosinophils, lymfocytes and macrophages, were found around eggs and larvae and frequently, around regional blood wessels. The neurological disturbances in the moose calves were pronounced, with locomotive abnormalities and ataxia. They showed weakness in the hindquarters, with uncoordinated and swaying movements of the hind legs. In addition, one of the calves was lame on the left forelimb. The muscles of the leg were visibly atrophic. The lesions produced by E. alces at the lumbar nerve roots and in the cauda equina are suggested to be the cause of the clinical signs observed.
