Abstract:
Mining is essential to the human well-being in many aspects. Mining activities, however, contribute significantly to pollution and other environmental impacts in South Africa. Recently much more stringent environmental legislation has been developed in South Africa due to increased public awareness and environmental disasters caused by mining activities. Authorisations constitute one of the main "command and control" instruments that can be used to influence and direct the behaviour of individuals and organisations to achieve sound environmental protection ultimately. The problem is that in the ever-changing maze of South African environmental legislation, it is often difficult for individuals and organisations to identify, obtain and maintain environmental authorisations. This article provides a legislative framework for the mining sector, explores the purpose and importance of environmental authorisations, gives an overview of the underlying relationship between environmental authorisations, risk assessment and environmental management systems before proposing a generic procedure for identifying, obtaining and maintaining environmental authorisations.

Abstract:

Denne masteroppgaven er delt i to.

Abstract:
1. Purpose of study: Water is a scarce and valuable resource in South Africa Most parts of the country do not have a high rainfall and the greater part of South Africa is semi-arid and subject to variable rainfall. Furthermore, access to water in terms of the previous Water Act 54 of 1956 was directly tied to ownership. The distribution of water rights has as a consequence been influenced by apartheid patterns of landownership. Due to this situation in South Africa, more than I6 million people do not have access to clean water for domestic use. Water is one of the most important resources determining a nation's health and wealth. The sustainable use and management of this scarce resource is of utmost importance. The National Water Act 36 of 1998 attempts to transform the injustices of the past with regard to restricted access to water and poor sustainable management of water as a scarce resource. The purpose of this research project was of a dual nature. Firstly, the aim was to make an in-depth study of the changes that the Natural Water Act 36 of 1998 brought about to the rights of all water users and secondly, to determine if the principles in the National Water Act 36 of I998 constituted deprivation or expropriation of the property rights of water users in terms of section 25 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa 108 of 1996. 2. Conclusions: The purpose of the National Water Act 36 of I998 as stated in the preamble, is 10 provide for water resource management, which achieves sustainable use of water for the benefit of all water users. The National Water Act 36 of 1998 fundamentally changes the manner in which persons obtain the right to use water from the position prior to 1998. The Water Act 54 of 1956 was in operation for more than 40 years, governing the water law in South Africa. Central to the operation of the Water Act 54 of I956 is the distinction between public and private water. The owner of the land on which private water was found had exclusive use and enjoyment of such water. It wasn't clear from the principles in the Act if water users could after 1994, vest property rights with regard to water. The conclusion made during the research is that water users had no right of ownership towards water as the Act only stated that owners of land on which water was found had the exclusive right to the use of such water. Furthermore, case law did not give a clear indication on the matter of the legal status of water found on a landowner's land. On the other hand, there was no right of ownership in public water. Generally, riparian owners used public water but it was clear from the Act that there was no right of ownership towards public water. It was realised that the Water Act 54 of 1956 did not comply with the demand of water allocation and management in South Africa's new constitutional dispensation and a process of intensive public participation resulted in the promulgation of the National Water Act 36 of 1998. The Act drastically changed the basis of water management and the legal status of water. The most important change in the new Act is the principle that all water is placed under the trusteeship of the national government. With this principle, the distinction between public and private water is done away with. The result of this principle is that no individual can have exclusive rights to the use of water and that the water resources in South Africa is a national asset managed by the state for the benefit of all The Act provides that in general any water use must he licensed. Even though no water user had ownership of water in terms of the previous Act, these water users did have rights in property as constituted in section 25 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, in the form of limited real rights and other rights as recognised in terms of the previous Act. The question arises if the principle in the new Act, which terminates the right to use water exclusively, is in accordance with section 25 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa 108 of 1996. Section 25 of the Constitution regulates the principles underlying deprivation and expropriation of property rights. As a result of the research conducted, it is held that the principles in the National Water Act 36 of 1998 constitute a deprivation of water users' property. This argument is followed due to the fact that the principles in the National Water Act regulate the property which water users had before the commencement of the Act. A deprivation of property may not be arbitrary and must be affected by a law of general application. Expropriation on the other hand, is a form of deprivation which is subject to more stringent safeguards, namely the public interest requirement and the payment of compensation. On this definition of expropriation, it seems as if the regulating of water rights in terms of the National Water Act constitute a deprivation of property by means of law of general application that operates non-arbitrary. The National Water Act passes the test of general application as well as non-arbitrary nature of the Act. Water users who are deprived from the exclusive right to use water, have no right to compensation as the taking of the rights in property do not constitute expropriation. South Africa is in the unique position to develop new water law legislation which will regulate the use of water and ensure that all people in the country have fair and equal access to water resources. Few guidelines exist towards the interpretation of the constitutionality of the principles in the National Water Act and case law on this matter is eagerly awaited.

Abstract:
Malaria is a disease affecting millions of people in 109 malarious countries and territories, causing approximately one million deaths annually. In 2004 one of the parasites causing human malaria, Plasmodium falciparum, was among the leading global causes of death from a single infectious agent, especially in Africa (WHO, 2008:23). Treatment of this disease with single active pharmaceutical ingredients has led to the emergence of resistant P. falciparum parasites, resulting in the most severe form of this illness. Alarmingly, the poor quality of commercially available antimalarial products, especially in Africa, has increasingly been reported as a major cause of resistance to antimalarials. In Pakistan it was found that a P. falciparum epidemic that initially was attributed to drug resistance, was actually caused by substandard sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine products, causing a 50 times higher incidence of malaria in these areas than elsewhere (Leslie et al., 2009:1758). Other results indicated that up to 10% of sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine tablets, sampled in six African countries, failed the assay test, whilst up to 40% failed the USP dissolution test. Furthermore, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that 20 - 90% of products failed quality requirements during 1999 and 2000 in seven African countries (WHO, 2003:263). Cases like these have raised the awareness of the vast number of inferior products that are being distributed. The subsequent need for establishing mechanisms to proactively detect substandard medicines, specifically antimalarials, easily and effectively had indirectly led to the origin of this study, long before it was formally undertaken. Testing monographs for pharmaceutical products are developed to formalise, or standardise, the regulation of pharmaceutical dosage forms. Problems have, however, been reported with regards to the inadequacy of existing antimalarial monographs in assuring quality medicines, fit for their intended use. The WHO had requested the Research Institute for Industrial Pharmacy, incorporating the Centre for Quality Assurance of Medicines (RIIP®/CENQAM®), both operating at the Potchefstroom Campus of the North–West University, to develop monographs for three immediate–release antimalaria dosage forms, namely amodiaquine tablets, sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine fixed–dose combination tablets and mefloquine tablets. The undertaking of these projects, to develop specifications for the quality control of these pharmaceutical products, formed the object of this research study. Data had been accumulated since 2000, as a result of continuous requests by the WHO to help solve problems that had been experienced with analytical test methods, especially from manufacturers. These requests either led to the refinement of existing methods, or to the development of new ones. The success with which these outcomes were implemented worldwide, finally led to the decision to publish these research findings under the umbrella of this project. The proud product is a comprehensive package of tests for three commercial antimalarial products, the outcomes of which are hoped to contribute towards the combat against resistance formation to these important disease fighters.

Wessels, Abraham Albertus. "Extraction of Helianthus Annuus (sunflower) oil with supercritical carbon dioxide / Albert Wessels." Thesis, North-West University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/603.

Full text
Abstract:
The principal objective of this study was to extract sunflower (Helianthus annuus) oil from seed with supercritical carbon dioxide (sc-C02) as an alternative to the cold-press method and subsequent 3-stage refining of the acquired crude oil. Extractions were performed on laboratory scale with a commercially available supercritical fluid extractor of the latest design. A minimum number of extraction runs based on a statistical design was performed to establish the conditions (time, pressure, temperature) required for a maximum yield of oil by virtue of surface response analysis and kinetic yield-versus-time data fitting. Several additional extraction runs were performed at randomly selected conditions to properly reveal the temperature, pressure and density dependence of the extraction process and thereby elucidate its mechanism. The physical appearance, chemical quality and composition of the sc-C02 derived sunflower oil were evaluated against the crude and refined oil obtained by the cold-press method as well as a standard specification for commercial sunflower oil. This evaluation was done by chemical analysis performed in the quality control laboratory of a commercial sunflower oil supplier and by GC and GC-MS analysis of samples of both sc-C02 and cold-press obtained sunflower oil. It was concluded that sunflower oil of a superior quality can be obtained by sc-CO2 extraction, especially when de-hulled seed is used to minimise the wax content of the extract. Extraction runs were performed on seed with natural moisture content as well as on oven-dried, freeze-dried and sun-dried seed in order to establish the crucial role played by moisture content as a yield-determining factor. Preliminary results of up scaling on a supercritical pilot-plant suggest that sc-C02 extraction of sunflower oil could be performed on industrial scale should an extruder based continuous feed mechanism and a viable process of de-hulling of seed be implemented.

Wessels, Elsabé. "Teacher knowledge and implementation of phonological awareness in Grade R / Elsabé Wessels." Thesis, North-West University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/4512.

Abstract:
South Africa’s current performance on national and international studies is an indication that all is not well with our literacy teaching. In spite of the implementation of the National Curriculum Statement Grade R-9, illiteracy is currently a serious problem in South Africa. Current international and national documents call for direct, explicit, systematic teaching of reading and language concepts to beginning readers. The five principal components of reading instruction, namely phoneme awareness; phonics; word study and spelling; reading fluency; and text comprehension encompass language instruction at the phoneme, grapheme, syllable, word, sentence, and discourse levels. Teachers need specific and explicit linguistic knowledge to recognise and address the needs of all learners on the continuum of reading and language proficiency. Phonological awareness skills are considered as the most important indicators of early reading skills. Literature suggests a strong positive correlation between phonological awareness skills and reading skills development. Longitudinal studies show that children who don’t have phonological awareness skills have difficulties in reading. Experimental studies on phonological awareness suggest that the implementation of phonological awareness training has positive effects on the development of reading and spelling abilities. Phonological awareness is a key component in the prevention of reading failure. The information collected through the assessment of phonological awareness, enables teachers to make informed decisions about modifications of the literacy learning programme and implement reading interventions to prevent failure of reading acquisition. This early, preventative intervention reduces the possibility that learners fall behind in reading. The teaching of phonological awareness is par excellence for emergent literacy in the grade R class. Phonological awareness can be improved through the systematic, explicit instruction thereof. Therefore, teachers need to be able to implement a variety of phonological awareness activities in their classroom instruction. Teachers need content knowledge about phonological awareness, and how to implement it successfully. The purpose of this study was to determine: What a SWOT analysis reveals about grade R-teachers’: * Current in-depth knowledge of phonological awareness. * Preparedness to teach phonological awareness. * Implementation of instructional practices relevant to phonological awareness. * Perceptions of the support received from DoBE, in terms of relevant documentation, teaching and learning support material and professional development. The limitations, if any, in the teacher support documents of the DoBE, regarding the teaching of phonological awareness in grade R and to make suggestion with regard to the improvement thereof. What the perceptions of grade R teachers are about their in-depth knowledge, instructional practices and preparedness, concerning phonological awareness, after the implementation of a teacher training programme, focussing specifically on phonological awareness. The study was conducted utilizing a case study with thirteen grade R teachers from Lichtenburg, and the surrounding towns, Koster, Coligny and Itsoseng in the North West Province, Department of Basic Education, in South Africa. Data was collected in three phases, using questionnaires, interviews, observations and document analyses. In the first phase, the researcher gathered information on the knowledge and implementation of phonological awareness before the intervention (i.e., a teacher training programme). In the second phase, the teachers received training about the concept of phonological awareness and its relevance in reading acquisition. The training programme included relevant teaching activities as well as learning and teaching support material. In the third phase, the researcher trained the participants in the implementation of phonological awareness and gathered data about the implementation process. The results indicated that if teachers received explicit training about phonological awareness and are provided with relevant learning and teaching support material, they are able to implement phonological awareness activities in grade R classrooms. The results of this study have implications for teacher training. The concept of phonological awareness, its relevance in reading acquisition as well as relevant teaching activities need to be included in the training of grade R teachers.

Wessels, Elette. "Crossover of engagement and life satisfaction among dual-earner parents / E. Wessels." Thesis, North-West University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/5056.

Abstract:
An individual has the ability to project feelings and emotions onto someone else, to the extent that the other person reacts to them, whether in a similar or opposite manner. These are known as crossover effects. Crossover research investigates the influential relationship and behavioural changes between partners. It sheds light on the occurrence of similar reactions that develop across work and home domains because of interpersonal relations between partners. However, previous crossover research primarily focused on negative symptoms, disregarding the positive. This one-sided approach caused a disparity in crossover research, because one can only gain a holistic understanding of the significance and effects of working if research is extended to include positive aspects. The general objective of this study was to test a structural model of job resources, work engagement and life satisfaction, and to determine the crossover effects of work engagement and life satisfaction among dual-earner parents in South Africa. A cross-sectional survey design was used. A convenience sample of 125 couples (N = 250) was taken in the North West and Gauteng Provinces. A job resources questionnaire, the 'Utrecht Work Engagement Scale' (UWES) and the 'Satisfaction with Life Scale' (SWLS) were administered. Cronbach alpha coefficients, Pearson product-moment correlations, and structural equation modelling were used to analyse the data. Results indicated positive relationships between job resources (autonomy, support and development), work engagement and life satisfaction for both partners. Job resources explained variances of 62% for males and 72% for females in work engagement. A variance of 12% with regard to life satisfaction of males was explained by their work engagement, whilst a combination of female work engagement and their spouse's life satisfaction explained 10% of the variance in female life satisfaction. Unfortunately, expectations about crossover effects of work engagement between partners were not met. The final structural model only confirmed a crossover effect of life satisfaction between partners from male to female. Recommendations were made for the organisation and for future research.

Dixon, Roger. "Sugilite and associated metamorphic silicate minerals from Wessels Mine, Kalahari manganese field." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/17066.

Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 143-151.
Sugilite, a purple mineral belonging to the milarite group, occurs in the lower manganese orebody at Wessels Mine, in the Kalahari Manganese Field. This orebody was formed in the lowermost manganiferous horizon of the Hotazel Member of the Voelwater Jasper Formation, part of the volcanogenic sedimentary iron formation of the Griqualand West Sequence. At Wessels Mine, which is located northwest of Kuruman in the northwestern Cape Province, evidence of a widespread and pervasive hydrothermal event which took place around 1300 Ma is found in the form of upgrading of the manganese-ore horizons and the formation of zoned silicate-mineral assemblages. The presence of unusual minerals such as glaucochroite, iron akermanite, xonotlite and hydrogarnets of various types constrains the main phase of metamorphism to between 400 and 450 °C in a low pressure, hydrous environment with XCO2 ≤ 0,02. All the minerals which occur in these assemblages are described and discussed in terms of their chemistry and formation.

Abstract:
Touting, as practised by conveyancers in the four Northern provinces of South Africa, is reaching alarming proportions. Owing to the institutional nature of the attorneys' profession, rules and regulations are applied to establish and manage the ethical behaviour of members of the profession. The question arises as to whether there could be an alternative way of management with a value system and ethical conduct as the underlying principles. According to the organisational behavioural science, the alternative method is to manage an organisation by means of value driven leadership style. The research questions of this study are: 1. Which teleological and deontological values will be suitable as elements of a shared value system for the attorneys' profession? In order to reach this goal, the following objectives are established: 2. To obtain exhaustive knowledge of the concepts 'values' and 'value-driven' by means of a literature study and empirical research in order to understand the phenomenon touting, as practised in the attorneys' profession. This objective was reached through an investigation of the concepts values and value-driven. The focus was particularly on the following aspects: J the development of the concept values J the principles of values and ethics 4 the division and classification of the concept values 4 the role and application of the concept values in management science and J values and leadership Based on the results of the limited availability sample, the empirical findings were that the respondents are ethically sensitive. It is evident that touting is a deliberate and unconstitutional disregard of instrumental and terminal values, and that the promotion of self-interest leads to the detriment of the principal, the profession and the public. 3. To establish the shared values of the attorneys' profession from the perspective of the deontology and teleology. This objective was reached through a literature study into the concepts value driven and shared values. From this investigation, it is evident that a relationship no doubt exists between terminal and instrumental values on the one hand and teleological and deontological values on the other hand. The investigation further found that specific effective teleological and deontological values are contained in the sources of knowledge of the attorneys' profession. These values can be used to develop a shared value system for the attorneys' profession. The results of the study, based on a limited availability sample indicate that the majority of respondents could not identify the critical value, namely to guard against self-interest. The absence of this value implies touting within the context of this investigation. 4. To identify and describe the ways and means of the transformation of the attorneys' profession from a rule-and-regulation orientation to a value-driven orientation with regard to ethical behaviour. In order to reach this objective, an empirical investigation was undertaken into the perceptions of respondents of a specific availability sample in regard of the existing rules applicable to ethical behaviour and their perception of the Law Societies of South Africa. The empirical investigation in regard to the perceptions show that a substantial portion of the respondents perception of the Law Societies of South Africa is negative - founded on the reality experience that the Law Societies of South Africa is not capable of cracking down on touting. The literature study demonstrates that the attorneys' profession is a learning organisation with an institutional culture. Transformation from a rule-and-regulation orientation to a value-driven orientation in regard to values and ethics, among others, requires a transformation of way of thinking in regard to basic assumptions concerning values and ethics. In summarising, it can be stated that this investigation produced evidence that effective teleological and deontological values are contained in the sources of knowledge of the attorneys' profession, that can be used to create a shared value system for the profession.

Abstract:
In many countries the introduction of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), especially computers, into schools has been praised as the necessary (although not without problems) course of action for the qualitative improvement of teaching and learning methodology. However, one of the greatest barriers inhibiting the successful adoption of a range of strategies to improve learning in a new technologically enriched framework is resistance from teachers who may feel threatened and disempowered by the change brought about by the introduction of technology into their classrooms. The purpose of the study was to investigate the factors that influence the self-efficacy of teachers in the foundation phase: Which factors influence the computer self-efficacy of foundation phase teachers? What is the relation between the identified factors and the computer self-efficacy of teachers? 0 What are the implications of the results for future training of foundation phase teachers? All teachers (N=34) in the foundation phase in the central region of Lichtenburg, a town in the Northwest province of South Africa, participated in the study. They completed a questionnaire, which consisted of two sections: The first section determined the teachers' computer self-efficacy. a The second section identified the possible factors that may influence the computer self efficacy of foundation phase teachers. To ensure that all possible data, with regard to factors that might affect teachers' computer self efficacy, were collected, the researcher also made use of interviews and observations. The data was analysed by using frequency distributions, Pearson product-moment correlations as well as Analysis of Variance, (ANOVA). The results regarding age and computer efficacy was analysed using ANOVA. The results showed a slight difference in the computer efficacy of the teachers from different age groups. Therefore, it may be possible to enhance the computer efficacy of teachers from any age group. The results indicated a relation between the computer self-efficacy of foundation phase teachers and some of the identified factors, namely formal training, computer experience and school support. The relation was statistically as well as practically significant. Age and access to a computer did not seem to have a statistically significant effect on computer self-efficacy. The results of this study have implications for teacher training. Computer training will be to the benefit of Foundation phase teachers. Explicit guidance on the choice and use of software and the integration thereof with teaching methods is essential, because computer technology is an integrated part of the 21st century generation of learners.

Abstract:
This mini-dissertation is primarily concerned with finding a solution to the problem regarding the repudiation of an inheritance by an insolvent. It is argued in the Wessels v De Jager case that when an insolvent repudiates an inheritance with the sole purpose of keeping the inheritance from being absolved by his creditors, such repudiation constitutes an act of insolvency. It is trite law that certain acts of insolvency can be rescinded in terms of section 26 of the Insolvency Act. To this end extensive use has been made of cases regarding this issue. Wessels v De Jager is the main point of departure regarding this study as it is the most recent case to establish a precedent. The court in Wessels found that the repudiation by an insolvent did not constitute an act of insolvency. In view thereof, it is suggested that the court erred in its finding in that the court based its decision primarily on the stipulation alteri. The stipulation alteri is an inherent contractual phenomenon. It is suggested that repudiation by an insolvent should be regarded as an act of insolvency. The corresponding reason for this premise is that when even at delatio certain rights exist. These rights are contingent or vested rights. The definition of asset in section 2 of the Insolvency Act is inclusive of contingent interests. Section 8 of the Insolvency Act stipulates that when an insolvent alienates his assets in such a way as to prejudice his creditors, such alienation constitutes a deed of insolvency. It is therefore argued that the repudiation of an inheritance by an insolvent heir is a deed of insolvency in terms of section 8 of the Insolvency Act which can be set aside by the court.

Abstract:
Albeit that often the only solution left to poor congregations in Africa is the practice of tentmaker ministry, this phenomenon remains problematic. There is a lack of job opportunities in the rural areas, and dividing one's time between the secular occupation and the ministry becomes increasingly complex. In the light of this situation, an (re–)evaluation of the Biblical foundations for being a tentmaker is certainly called for. Studies such as the book of Meggitt (1998), Paul, poverty and survival, stimulated renewed interest in the economic nature of Paul's ministry and the economic classes of the congregations where he ministered. Paul's offering of the gospel free of charge (1 Cor 9:18), and his sacrifice of "becoming a slave", offer interesting solutions for the poverty stricken churches in Africa, and in particular in Botswana.

Abstract:
South Africa the development of small tourism businesses are extremely vital for job creation and a development of a new economy. The South African tourism industry has to look at more innovative ways for marketing their products and services to develop the small tourism businesses. The arrival of web 2.0 led to the development and evolution of web-based communities, hosted services and web applications such as social networking sites. Social networking sites have encouraged new ways to communicate and share information on the web. When it comes to online networking, websites are commonly used. These websites are known as social networking sites and function as online communities on the internet. Social networking sites are currently one of the applications of Web 4.0 developments. This means creation by the majority and web participation a necessity. The importance of customer engagement enablement is recognised. Operating systems are in cloud-computing. The communication medium became social media systems and people sell everything via desktop, mobile, tablets and iTV. This study focuses on the Eastern Free State tourism destination and its development through social networks. The main aim of the study is to critically analyse the application and effective utilisation of social network site technologies within the Eastern Free State tourism industry and to explore this objective of social network applications used within the small businesses in Eastern Free State tourism industry. The empirical study was conducted by means of a field study using a structured questionnaire and interviews with key stakeholders. Data from 60 small tourism businesses were collected and a total of 55 businesses restricted to Eastern Free State Drakensberg were analysed in the process of collecting the peer-aided questionnaires. The biggest problems in the use of digital media are knowledge to develop a proper product that has measured marketing outcomes for the small business.

Fivaz, Jakobus Eduard Wessels. "Implementing productivity gainsharing to influence the performance of value drivers employed by EVA / Jakobus Eduard Wessels Fivaz." Thesis, North-West University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/2659.

Abstract:
The creation of shareholder wealth has become the key of corporate success. A setback in achieving this is a lack of commitment and participation in productivity initiatives at shop floor level in South Africa and companies are faced with competitive challenges of promoting innovativeness relating to productivity improvement amongst employees. It has increasingly been recognized that by introducing a carefully crafted incentive scheme, it may be possible to induce workers to work both harder and smarter and use existing technologies in new and better ways that enhance their productivity. The purpose of the study is to evaluate to what extend gainsharing can be a solution to the predicament. The empirical data used during the study was based on questionnaires that were administered amongst managers of Eskort Ltd. The research established that gainsharing would induce employees to effectively participate in problem solving or productivity improvement initiatives in the company. The majority of participants feel that gainsharing will benefit the company to deliver on client requirements; help enhance teamwork; create a feeling of ownership; share a portion of saved-cost for productivity improvement purposes; stimulate organization learning; improve communication between management and employees; stimulate employees to make suggestions on ways to improve productivity; and increase profit and reduce costs. The study clearly illustrates that money can be the primary drive for motivation to certain employees within the company. Further more based on the results of the empirical study the researcher came to the conclusion that motivated employees will be more productive and as a result have a positive influence on the value drivers employed by the EVA methodology. EVA is a value based performance measure, an investment decision tool and also a performance measure indicating the absolute amount of shareholder value created.

Wessels, Madeleine Nicolette. "Molecular screening of the G3277A alteration in a Black South African diabetic population / by Madeleine Nicolette Wessels." Thesis, North-West University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/364.

Full text
Abstract:
The diabetic disorder is a collection of genetic diseases with a common phenotype of impaired glucose homeostasis and affects many different organs, resulting in a clinically heterogeneous phenotype with strong genetic as well as environmental influences. The basis of diabetes is the aberrant production and utilisation of glucose, in conjunction with factors affecting the influence of insulin on the body and its role in glucose absorption. The mitochondrion has a vital role to play in energy production, and therefore warrants investigation. A mutation at position 3243 in the mitochondrial genome has been associated with the diabetic phenotype when expressed in heteroplasmic levels of approximately 30%. This mutation has been detected in the European diabetic population but is not detected in the Black South African diabetic population. In a previous study to determine the prevalence of the 3243 mitochondrial mutation in a Black South African diabetic cohort, another alteration, G3277A, was observed in ca. 3% of a small cohort investigated. In the present study it was investigated whether this alteration could be associated with the Black South African diabetic population. Blood samples collected from 222 diabetic and 237 non-diabetic individuals were analysed via RFLP and automated sequencing techniques for the presence of this G3277A alteration as well as the A3243G mutation in the samples that were sequenced. It was observed that seven control individuals and one patient individual harboured the G3277A alteration. None harboured the A3243G mutation but three novel alterations were detected. Via statistical analysis it was determined that the G3277A alteration was not in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in either the diabetic or non-diabetic populations, therefore no assumption regarding the association of these alterations with the type 2 diabetic phenotype could be made. It is therefore suggested that in the future larger groups of individuals are screened for the A3277G alteration.

Abstract:
The left hand has always been perceived as the weaker of the two hands and since about 1840, a substantial amount of piano repertoire for the left hand has seen the light. Composers continue to show an interest in composing works in this genre and the reasons are mainly because of injuries to the right hand, to aid in the pianist's technical development, because of the challenge it poses to the composer and finally to delight audiences with an unique technical display. The technical challenges that are present in these works, differ greatly from the difficulties found in piano music for both hands. In order to give a commanding performance, the pianist is required to make certain adjustments. In music for the left hand alone, this hand is suddenly solely responsible for both the melodic lines and accompanying textures simultaneously. By addressing the technical difficulties of a composition, the interpretation of the work is invariably influenced. One of the most well-known works in this genre, A. Scriabin's Prelude for the left hand, Op. 9, no. 1, has been used to identify the technical aspects in piano music for the left hand. The question that arises, is: which specific technical aspects can be identified in A. Scriabin's Prelude for the left hand, Op. 9, no. 1? The following questions are subsequently raised: firstly, how will the pianist approach these technical aspects, and secondly, how will certain technical adjustments benefit the performance and interpretation of the work? The hypothesis holds that the pianist will have to identify and address the unique technical aspects of piano works for the left hand alone, in order to perform these works successfully. Four specific areas have been identified that could be considered the main factors contributing to the technical challenges idiomatic of music for the left hand: fingering, pedalling, balance and voicing and physical flexibility.
