Abstract:
An annual well-being index constructed from thirteen socioeconomic factors is proposed in order to dynamically measure the mood of the US citizenry. Econometric models are fitted to the log-returns of the index in order to quantify its tail risk and perform option pricing and risk budgeting. By providing a statistically sound assessment of socioeconomic contentment, the index is consistent with rational finance theory, enabling the construction and valuation of insurance-type financial instruments to serve as contracts written against it. Endogenously, the VXO volatility measure of the stock market appears to be the greatest contributor to tail risk. Exogenously, “stress-testing” the index against the politically important factors of trade imbalance and legal immigration, quantify the systemic risk. For probability levels in the range of 5% to 10%, values of trade below these thresholds are associated with larger downward movements of the index than for immigration at the same level. The main intent of the index is to serve as an early-warning mechanism for negative changes in the mood of citizens, thus alerting policy makers and private agents to potential future market downturns.

Abstract:
Refracturing technology is one of the key technologies to recover the productivity of horizontal wells in tight oil reservoirs, and the selection of best candidate wells from target blocks is the basis of this technology. Based on the refracturing production database, this paper analyzes the direct relationship between geological data, initial fracturing completion data, and dynamic production data, and the stimulation effect of refracturing. Considering the interaction among multiple factors, the factors affecting the stimulation effect of refracturing are classified and integrated, and a comprehensive index including geology, engineering, and production is constructed, making this index meaningful both for physical and engineering properties. The XGBoost decision tree model is established to analyze the weight of influence for the comprehensive index of geology, engineering, and production in predicting the stimulation effect of refracturing. A comprehensive decision index of refracturing well selection is formed by combining the above three for performing a fast selection of horizontal candidate wells for fracturing. Taking a horizontal well test area in Songliao Basin as an example, the target wells of refracturing are selected by this method, and field operation is carried out, and a good stimulation effect is achieved. The results show that the comprehensive decision-making index constructed by this method is reliable and has certain guiding significance for well selection and stimulation potential evaluation of tight oil reservoir.

Abstract:
Well-being is a positive perception and usually related to satisfaction allied with emotion and determined by social variables in economics, socio-cultural, environment, and health. The determination and validation of indexes of well-being applicable to Filipinos are the intentions of the study. The study utilized the descriptive research design with the total population of five thousand one hundred five (N=5, 105) and a sample size (n = 1000) of one thousand household heads in Malaybalay City, Philippines. Survey questionnaires used in the study were validated utilizing the Delphi technique and the reliability test was done using Cronbach Alpha. The top three indicators that yield the greater optimal weights are the better indicators of well-being among Filipinos. The result of the study shows that the better indicators for well-being are housing, income, and community.Keywords: well-being, health, income, housing, community

Cryptosporidium parvum is a common surface water contaminant that can cause illness in human beings. The presence of this etiological agent in groundwater identifies the groundwater as under the direct influence (GWUDI) of surface water. Currently the determination of SWUDI water sources requires an expensive, labor-intensive laboratory procedure call the Microscopic Particulate Analysis (MPA). The results of the MPA provide a risk index that rates the degree of surface water contamination. The objective of this study is to identify other methods of identifying GWUDI of surface waters, such as well characteristics and hydrogeologic factors which may contribute to higher MPA risk indices. In order to determine which public water systems that are GWUDI, a total of sixty-two wells a water treatment systems suspected of bein GWUDI were investigated. The wells sampled were distributed across seven countried in the Central Florida region. Water samples were collected and analyzed at the Department of Health Laboratory in Tampa, Florida using the MPA. The study also investigated the well characteristics and the hydrogeology of the well locations. The results also showed that 13% of the wells sampled were in the high risk range while 29% and 58% of the wells sampled were within the moderate and low risk ranges, respectively. It was also observed that some well characteristics and the hydrogeology of an area generally influence the MPA risk index. The results also suggested that older well tend to have higher risk. Karst regions were observed to be susceptible to a higher risk than sandy areas.

Nowadays many social scientists defend the advantages to define a measure of well being able to complement the GDP per capita. This work project proposes a new index of human development: the happiness index. Many studies have been undertaken in order to determine the best measurement of happiness. Happiness is much more than just feeling good, it is also living and doing well. Thus, in order to create a measure of happiness, it is required to evaluate all factors that intervene and, on the other hand, to consider the best practices, combining growth, environmental sustainability and efficiency. The estimation was made based on data for 83 countries, and then applied to 130 countries in the period 1997-2005. Countries with the highest GDP per capita or Human Development Index are not the ones with the higher happiness index.

Motivated by the reservoir engineering concept of the productivity index of a producing oil well in an isolated reservoir, we analyze a time dependent functional, diffusive capacity, on the solutions to initial boundary value problems for a parabolic equation. Sufficient conditions providing for time independent diffusive capacity are given for different boundary conditions. The dependence of the constant diffusive capacity on the type of the boundary condition (Dirichlet, Neumann or third-type boundary condition) is investigated using a known variational principle and confirmed numerically for various geometrical settings. An important comparison between two principal constant values of a diffusive capacity is made, leading to the establishment of criteria when the so-called pseudo-steady-state and boundary-dominated productivity indices of a well significantly differ from each other. The third type boundary condition is shown to model the thin skin effect for the constant wellbore pressure production regime for a damaged well. The questions of stabilization and uniqueness of the time independent values of the diffusive capacity are addressed. The derived formulas are used in numerical study of evaluating the productivity index of a well in a general three-dimensional reservoir for a variety of well configurations.

Abstract:
This study assessed the effect of variables such as life satisfaction, self-rated health, social support and coping styles on subjective well-being. The level of subjective well-being was studied in a sample of Mexican elderly persons from the state of Yucatan in Merida (n = 122) with an age range of 60-93 years. The results in women show that coping styles predicts subjective well-being in negative affects. Moreover, self-perception of health, coping styles, and satisfaction with life are adequate predictors of the cognitive dimension of subjective well-being. Results in men show that satisfaction with life and coping styles predict the cognitive dimension of subjective well-being. Findings point to the importance of exploring psychosocial variables in older adults.
El presente estudio evaluó el efecto de las variables satisfacción con la vida, autopercepción de salud, apoyo social y estilos de enfrentamiento sobre el bienestar subjetivo. Se contó con una muestra de 122 adultos mayores mexicanos del Estado de Yucatán, en la ciudad de Mérida con un rango de edad de 60 a 93 años. Los resultados en mujeres muestran que los estilos de enfrentamiento son predictores del bienestar subjetivo en los afectos negativos. En cuanto a la dimensión cognitiva del bienestar subjetivo, la autopercepción de salud, los estilos de enfrentamiento y la satisfacción con la vida fueron predictores adecuados. En hombres, los resultados demuestran que la dimensión cognitiva del bienestar subjetivo fue predicha a partir de la satisfacción con la vida y los estilos de enfrentamiento. Los hallazgos muestran la importancia del profundizar y promover variables psicosociales en los adultos mayores.
Cette étude a évalué l’effet de la satisfaction de la vie, de l’auto-perception de la santé, du soutien social et des styles d’adaptation sur les variables de bien-être subjectif. Nous avons étudié le niveau de bien-être subjectif d’un échantillon de 122 Mexicains âgés de l’État du Yucatan, dans la ville de Mérida, âgés de 60 à 93 ans. Les résultats chez les femmes montrent que les styles d’adaptation sont des facteurs prédictifs du bien-être subjectif des affects négatifs, en termes de la dimension cognitive du bien-être subjectif, l’auto-perception de la santé, les styles de confrontation et de satisfaction avec la vie étaient des prédicteurs adéquats, tandis que chez les hommes, les résultats montrent que la dimension cognitive du bien-être subjectif est prévu de satisfaction de la vie et les styles d’adaptation. Les résultats montrent l’importance d’approfondir et de promouvoir les variables psychosociales chez les personnes âgées.
Este estudo avaliou o efeito de variáveis, satisfação com a vida, autopercepção de saúde, apoio social e estilos de coping no bem-estar subjetivo. o nível de bem-estar subjetivo foi estudado no estado de uma amostra de adultos mexicanos mais antiga do Yucatan em Merida (n = 122) com uma faixa etária de 60-93 anos. Os resultados em mulheres mais antiga mostram que os estilos de enfrentamento são preditores de bem-estar subjetivo em efeito negativo em termos da dimensão cognitiva do bem-estar de saúde subjetiva auto-avaliação, estilos e satisfação com a vida de enfrentamento foram preditores adequados em homens mais antiga resultados mostram que a dimensão cognitiva do bem-estar subjetivo está previsto a partir de satisfação com a vida e estilos de enfrentamento.

This following study aimed to determine the discriminant validity of Sense of Belonging and the different types of organizational commitment, and analyse the relationship and the predictive capacity of these constructs for subjective and psychological well-being. 354 people completed surveys measuring the constructs described. The results showed that Sense of Belonging and the different types of organizational commitment are different constructs, and they have different relationships the diverse indicators of well-being according to the type of employment. The affective commitment was the most relevant predictor in entry level employees, and Sense of Belonging was the only predictor in employees with leadership positions.
Los objetivos del presente trabajo son determinar la validez discriminante del sentido de pertenencia y de los diferentes tipos de compromiso organizacional, y analizar la relación y capacidad predictiva de estos constructos del bienestar subjetivo y psicológico. 354 personas cumplimentaron un cuestionario que permitía medir los constructos descritos. Los resultados muestran que el sentido de pertenencia y los diferentes tipos de compromiso organizacional son constructos diferentes, y que se asocian de forma diferencial con los diversos indicadores del bienestar en función del tipo de puesto de trabajo estudiado. El compromiso afectivo es el predictor más importante para los empleados que desempeñan puestos de base, y el sentido de pertenencia es el único predictor para los puestos de mando.

Abstract:
An alternative model of well-being and development using an emic and post-hoc approach is presented. This method was applied to a non-educated corridor sample which includes rural and urban shantytowns (n = 550). A psychometric wellbeing battery was developed for this study. Analytical technique includes a modified version of Confirmatory Factor Analysis in order to meet the demands of the post-hoc theorisation rationale. Alternative models of universal needs, subjective life satisfaction, resources, and values are presented. A three factor personality solution is described. Discussion emphasises the advantages of these results compared to theories and approaches from Europe and United States in theoretical and empirical terms. Implications for development are also discussed.
Se presenta una propuesta alternativa a los modelos establecidos de bienestar y desarrollo a través de una metodología émica y post hoc. Esta se aplica a un corredor migratorio desde comunidades rurales hasta urbano marginales. Se aplicó una batería psicométrica desarrollada para este estudio a 550 participantes y una versión modificada del análisis factorial confirmatorio para satisfacer las demandas de teorización post-hoc del estudio. Se proponen modelos alternativos de necesidades universales, satisfacción subjetiva de vida, recursos y valores. Se encuentra una estructura de tres factores de personalidad. Los resultados son discutidos en relación con las teorías establecidas desde el referente europeo y estadounidense y se reflexiona sobre sus perspectivas para el desarrollo.

The main goal of this study is to develop a brief scale to assess perceived well being in adolescentpopulation. Besides verifying psychometric properties, we identified individual differences between genders, context and age. Participants were adolescent students recruited in three different areas of Argentina (Metropolitan area -Buenos Aires-, Norwest area- Tucuman- and Southwest area­ Patagonia- ). aged 13 Th. 18. Instruments administered consisted of BIEPS (well being scale) other classics instruments to assess life satisfaction (SWLS and D-T) anda symptom check list (SLC- 90). Results show that classic instruments to assess well being resulted in less reliable instruments to assess perceived life satisfaction considering other theories. Gender, age and context don't seem to affect subjective perception of psychological well being.
El objetivo de este estudio es el desarrollo de una escala breve para la evaluación del bienestar psicológico en adolescentes, la revisión de sus características psicométricas. En el mismo sentido se intentó verificar la presencia de diferencias individuales entre el sexo, la edad y el lugar de residencia de los sujetos evaluados. Los participantes son adolescentes entre las edades de 13 a 18 años (N= 1270) de tres regiones de la Argentina (Región Metropolitana, Noroeste y Patagonia). Los instrumentos administrados son la escala de bienestar (BIEPS-J), otras escalas tradicionales para la evaluación de la satisfacción (Escala SWLS y D-T) y un listado de síntomas psicopatológicos  (SCL-90). Los resultados señalan que las escalas clásicas que evalúan satisfacción con la vida resultan indicadores poco válidos para una evaluación del bienestar psicológico autopercibido, considerando las dimensiones teóricas comentadas. Las variables género, edad y contexto sociocultural no parecen afectar la percepción subjetiva del bienestar psicológico.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses attention on the initiative taken in China to balance the tremendous economic success of the past half-century with the social outcome of increased happiness for the population. Though counterintuitive, the evidence from various surveys suggests a generally declining trend in happiness in the country at a time when personal wealth has been increasing. The empirical analysis suggests that social comparison, hedonistic adaptation, and changes in other happiness determinants provide three potential explanations for the decline in self-reported happiness in China. In view of the profound policy implications of such findings, the second part of the thesis centers on the institutionalization of happiness reform, that is, how much the initiative of developing a happiness index in Guangdong has influenced policy and practice in public administration at local levels. Fieldwork undertaken in the province suggested a considerable gap between the rhetoric of commitment to such policy and the reality of public administrative practice. Theoretical insights from neo-institutionalism are explored and offered by way of accounting for the limited impact of this apparently ambitious public policy reform.

Abstract:
An empirical research was carried out with the aim of exploring in levels of anomy, social well-being and institutional trust and their relationship. Is a descriptive correlation study with a non experimental design based on a convenience sample composed by 585 participants (34.7% males and 65.3% females, age: M = 28.50; SD = 11.02) from Buenos Aires and other Argentinian cities. Results show a general positive perception of social well being -with a lack in others confidence-, low levels of institutional trust and high punctuations inanomic frustration. Convergent validity was corroborated and group differences showed up.
La presente investigación busca conocer la percepción de frustración anómica, confianza institucional y bienestar social de los sujetos así como la relación entre estos indicadores. El estudio es descriptivo correlacional, de diseño no experimental transversal, con una muestra no probabilística intencional compuesta por 585 participantes (34.7% hombres y 65.3% mujeres. Edad: M = 28.50; SD = 11.02) de Buenos Aires y otras ciudades de Argentina. Los resultados arrojan una percepción positiva en el bienestar social con un déficit en la confianza en los otros, bajos niveles de confianza en las instituciones y niveles altos de frustración anómica. Se corrobora la validez convergente y surgen diferencias a partir de variables de agrupación.

Abstract Hydrocarbon reserves in carbonate reservoirs account for 38% - 60% of total world reserves, according to different estimates. In Tatarstan, carbonate reservoirs are found, mostly, in the eastern slope of the Melekess Depression and the South-Tatarian Arch. The carbonate reservoirs are confined to the Middle and Lower Carboniferous sediments, the Upper Devonian (including the domanik sediments), and the Upper Permian (the Kazanian heavy oil accumulations). Considering an extensive geographic and stratigraphic range and differing tectonic and sedimentation environments, the carbonate rocks are characterized by a variety of reservoir properties. In contrast to terrigenous rocks, the carbonate void space is complicated by secondary processes that took place much later than the sedimentogenesis-lithogenesis stage. Numerous fissures, caves, sutures, and stylolites form the void space of the reservoir rock matrix containing commercial hydrocarbon reserves. In addition to fracturing and vugginess contributing to increase of void space of carbonate rocks, the secondary processes include sulphatisation and secondary dolomitization (in limestones), adding to deterioration of reservoir properties. The secondary processes impede understanding and evaluation of reservoir properties and saturation potential, in particular, determination of the oil and gas saturation factors (Dyakonova T.F. et al, 2019, Akhmetov R.T. et al, 2017)/ In the western slope of the South-Tatarian Arch, carbonate reservoirs are confined to the Middle and Lower Carboniferous sediments. Numerous RCAL and SCAL investigations provided valuable insight into these targets. In this paper, we used data from the laboratory experiments and studies of core and oil samples from the six neighbor fields on the western slope of the South-Tatarian Arch. Because of common sedimentological and tectonic sedimentation environments and lithological similarity of rocks within the stratigraphic referencing, the six fields under analysis were considered as analogous, and the results of the laboratory studies of the samples were reviewed collectively.

The global prevalence of excess adiposity increases annually, including in Indonesia. High energy intake from sugar becomes a global concern since it causes weight gain, tooth decay, and non-communicable diseases. This cross-sectional study assessed the association between body mass index and sugar-sweetened beverage consumption among college students. The study was conducted in Universitas Indonesia, West Java, Indonesia, during March – June 2019. The respondents were 161 college students living in dormitory aged 19-21 years old. They were enrolled using convenience sampling. Anthropometric measurement was obtained to calculate body mass index. The 7-days fluid record was the tool for assessing sugar-sweetened beverage consumption. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20. The median body mass index was 20.6 (15.11–41.29) kg.m-2, and added sugar intake in beverage was 23.4 (0–134.4) grams per day. 24.2% of respondents had excess adiposity status, and 11.8% of respondents consumed added sugar in beverages exceeding 50 grams a day. Most of the respondents had inadequate total energy intake and low physical activity levels. Adjusted to total energy intake, physical activity level, and gender; body mass index significantly associated with sugar-sweetened beverages consumption in added sugar intake (p-value=0.048, β=1.810, 95% CI 0.014–3.606, r = 0.229, R square=0.028).

Abstract Environmental impacts due to exploration to the abandonment of oil and gas wells are a major focus when the wells are planned and drilled. However, there is no industry standard to quantify the impact due to complex indicators and associated variables. So, it is necessary to have an assessment framework and a methodology with the help of the digital transformation that provides an integrative index. This index allows a baseline to estimate the benchmarking for the well engineering not only during planning but also in real-time as the well is drilled and produced. This paper presents and validates a new model for the sustainability index for well design and engineering in the life cycle of the well. This proposed method avoids some of the vagueness of well’s sustainability and can be used and applied practically. It is based on various metrics and weightage assigned when a well is planned, designed, and engineered. Evaluating the index for well engineering is based on the following elements: environmental impact, well design and engineering, functionality and optimization impact, impact of well and maintenance costs, health and safety impact, societal impact. Each element contains sub-elements. This process involves individual indexing through backpropagation of neural networks combined with bat algorithm to obtain the final overall index.

The ability to simulate snow accumulation and melting processes is fundamental to developing real-time hydrological models in watersheds with a snowmelt-dominated flow regime. A primary source of uncertainty with this model development approach is the subjectivity related to which historical periods to use and how to combine parameters from multiple calibration events. The Hydrologic Engineering Center, Hydrological Modeling System, has recently implemented a hybrid temperature index (TI) snow module that has not been extensively tested. This study evaluates a radiatative temperature index (RTI) model’s performance relative to the traditional air TI model. The TI model for Willow Creek performed reasonably well in both the calibration and validation years. The results of the RTI calibration and validation simulations resulted in additional questions related to how best to parameterize this snow model. An RTI parameter sensitivity analysis indicates that the choice of calibration years will have a substantial impact on the parameters and thus the streamflow results. Based on the analysis completed in this study, further refinement and verification of the RTI model calculations are required before an objective comparison with the TI model can be completed.

Habitat suitability models are widely adopted in ecosystem management and restoration, where these index models are used to assess environmental impacts and benefits based on the quantity and quality of a given habitat. Many spatially distributed ecological processes require application of suitability models within a geographic information system (GIS). Here, we present a geospatial toolbox for assessing habitat suitability. The Geospatial Suitability Indices (GSI) toolbox was developed in ArcGIS Pro 2.7 using the Python® 3.7 programming language and is available for use on the local desktop in the Windows 10 environment. Two main tools comprise the GSI toolbox. First, the Suitability Index Calculator tool uses thematic or continuous geospatial raster layers to calculate parameter suitability indices based on user-specified habitat relationships. Second, the Overall Suitability Index Calculator combines multiple parameter suitability indices into one overarching index using one or more options, including: arithmetic mean, weighted arithmetic mean, geometric mean, and minimum limiting factor. The resultant output is a raster layer representing habitat suitability values from 0.0 to 1.0, where zero is unsuitable habitat and one is ideal suitability. This report documents the model purpose and development as well as provides a user’s guide for the GSI toolbox.

The prospects for doing business in countries are also determined by the business confidence index. The purpose of the article is to model trends in indicators that determine the state of the business climate of countries, in particular, the period of influence of the consequences of COVID-19 is of scientific interest. The approach is based on the preliminary results of substantiating a set of indicators and applying the taxonomy method to substantiate an alternative indicator of the business climate, the advantage of which is its advanced nature. The most significant factors influencing the business climate index were identified, in particular, the annual GDP growth rate and the volume of retail sales. The similarity of the trends in the calculated and actual business climate index was obtained, the forecast values were calculated with an accuracy of 89.38%. And also, the obtained modeling results were developed by means of building and using neural networks with learning capabilities, which makes it possible to improve the quality and accuracy of the business climate index forecast up to 96.22%. It has been established that the consequences of the impact of COVID-19 are forecasting a decrease in the level of the country's business climate index in the 3rd quarter of 2020. The proposed approach to modeling the country's business climate is unified, easily applied to the macroeconomic data of various countries, demonstrates a high level of accuracy and quality of forecasting. The prospects for further research are modeling the business climate of the countries of the world in order to compare trends and levels, as well as their changes under the influence of quarantine restrictions.

This technical report documents the second of a two-phase research and development (R&D) study in support of the development of a combined Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) methodology that accommodates geotechnical as well as structural design limit states for design of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) reinforced concrete, hydraulic navigation structures. To this end, this R&D effort extends reliability procedures that have been developed for other non-USACE structural systems to encompass USACE hydraulic structures. Many of these reinforced concrete, hydraulic structures are founded on and/or retain earth or are buttressed by an earthen feature. Consequently, the design of many of these hydraulic structures involves significant soil structure interaction. Development of the required reliability and corresponding LRFD procedures has been lagging in the geotechnical topic area as compared to those for structural limit state considerations and have therefore been the focus of this second-phase R&D effort. Design of an example T-Wall hydraulic structure involves consideration of five geotechnical and structural limit states. New numerical procedures have been developed for precise multiple limit state reliability calculations and for complete LRFD analysis of this example T-Wall reinforced concrete, hydraulic structure.

Using meta-analysis we document that (across several contexts) attending sought-after public secondary schools does not tend to improve student test scores. We argue that this fact does not preclude the possibility that these schools could lead to gains in the future. We explore this notion using both administrative and survey data from Barbados. We show that preferred schools have better peers but do not improve short-run test scores. However, the same students at the same schools have more postsecondary school completion and improved adult well-being (based on an index of educational attainment, occupational rank, earnings, and health). These long-run benefits are larger for females, who also experience reduced teen motherhood.

High-volume fly ash concrete (HVFAC) is more cost-efficient, sustainable, and durable than conventional concrete. This report presents a state-of-the-art review of HVFAC properties and different fly ash characterization methods. The main challenges identified for HVFAC for pavements are its early-age properties such as air entrainment, setting time, and strength gain, which are the focus of this research. Five fly ash sources in Illinois have been repeatedly characterized through x-ray diffraction, x-ray fluorescence, and laser diffraction over time. The fly ash oxide compositions from the same source but different quarterly samples were overall consistent with most variations observed in SO3 and MgO content. The minerals present in various fly ash sources were similar over multiple quarters, with the mineral content varying. The types of carbon present in the fly ash were also characterized through x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, loss on ignition, and foam index tests. A new computer vision–based digital foam index test was developed to automatically capture and quantify a video of the foam layer for better operator and laboratory reliability. The heat of hydration and setting times of HVFAC mixes for different cement and fly ash sources as well as chemical admixtures were investigated using an isothermal calorimeter. Class C HVFAC mixes had a higher sulfate imbalance than Class F mixes. The addition of chemical admixtures (both PCE- and lignosulfonate-based) delayed the hydration, with the delay higher for the PCE-based admixture. Both micro- and nano-limestone replacement were successful in accelerating the setting times, with nano-limestone being more effective than micro-limestone. A field test section constructed of HVFAC showed the feasibility and importance of using the noncontact ultrasound device to measure the final setting time as well as determine the saw-cutting time. Moreover, field implementation of the maturity method based on wireless thermal sensors demonstrated its viability for early opening strength, and only a few sensors with pavement depth are needed to estimate the field maturity.

Objectives: We seek to establish the basis for improving cotton productivity under arid conditions, by studying the water use efficiency - evaporative cooling interrelationship. Specifically, we will test the hypothesis that cotton productivity under arid conditions can be improved by combining high seasonal WUE with efficient evaporative cooling, evaluate whether high WUE and/or evaporative cooling are based on specific physiological factors such as diurnal flexibility in stomatal conductance, stomatal density, photosynthetic capacity, chlorophyll fluorescence, and plant water status. Genes influencing both WUE and evaporative cooling, as well as other parameters such as economic products (lint yield, quality, harvest index) of cotton will also be mapped, in order to evaluate influences of water relations on these parameters. Approach: Carbon isotope ratio will be used to evaluate WUE, accompanied by additional parameters to elucidate the relationship between WUE, evaporative cooling, and cotton productivity. A detailed RFLP map will be used to determine the number, location, and phenotypic effects of genes underlying genetic variation in WUE between cultivated cottons, as well as test associations of these genes with traits of economic importance such as harvest index, lint yield, and lint quality. Major Conclusions: Productivity and quality of cotton grown under well-watered versus water-limited conditions was shown to be partly accounted for by different quantitative trait loci (QTLs). Among a suite of physiological traits often found to differ between genotypes adapted to arid versus well-watered conditions, genetic mapping implicated only reduced plant osmotic potential in improved cotton productivity under arid conditions. Our findings clearly implicate OP as a major component of cotton adaptation to arid conditions. However, testing of further physiological hypotheses is clearly needed to account for additional QTL alleles conferring higher seed-cotton yield under arid conditions, such as three of the five we found. Near-isogenic lines being made for QTLs discovered herein will offer a powerful new tool useful toward identification of the underlying gene(s) by using fine-scale mapping approaches (Paterson et al 1990). Implications: Adaptation to both arid and favorable conditions can be combined into the same genotype. We have identified diagnostic DNA markers that are being applied to creation of such desirable genotypes. Simultaneous improvement of productivity (and/or quality) for both arid and irrigated conditions will require more extensive field testing and the manipulation of larger numbers of genes, reducing the expected rate of genetic gain These difficulties may be at least partly ameliorated by efficiencies gained through identification and use of diagnostic DNA markers. Genomic tools and approaches may expedite adaptation of crops to arid cultivation, help to test roles of additional physiological factors, and guide the isolation of the underlying genes that protect crop performance under arid conditions.

Climate and hydrology are major drivers of ecosystem structure and function, particularly in arid and semi-arid ecosystems. Understanding changes in climate, groundwater, streamflow, and water quality is central to assessing the condition of park resources. This report combines data collected on climate, groundwater, and springs at Big Bend National Park (NP) to provide an integrated look at climate and water conditions during water year (WY) 2019 (October 2018–September 2019). However, this report does not address the Rio Grande or its tributaries. Annual precipitation was higher than normal (1981–2010) for Big Bend NP at four of the five National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Cooperative Observer Program weather stations: 111% of normal for Chisos Basin, 122% of normal for Panther Junction, 155% of normal for Persimmon Gap, and 124% of normal for Rio Grande Village. Castolon had 88% of normal annual precipitation. All five stations had higher than normal rainfall in October and December, while rainfall totals were substantially below normal at all stations in November, February, and March. Monthly precipitation totals for April through September were more variable from station to station. Mean monthly maximum air temperatures were below normal in the fall months, with Panther Junction as much as 7.5°F below normal in October. Monthly temperatures from January through July were more variable. Temperatures in August and September were warmer than normal at every station, up to +9.4°F at Rio Grande Village and +8.7°F at Chisos Basin in July. The reconnaissance drought index values indicate generally wetter conditions (based on precipitation and evaporative demand) at Chisos Basin since WY2016 and at Panther Junction and Persimmon Gap since WY2015, except for WY2017. This report presents the manual and automatic groundwater monitoring results at nine wells. Five wells had their highest water level in or just before WY2019: Panther Junction #10 peaked at 99.94 ft below ground surface (bgs) in September 2018, Contractor’s Well peaked at 31.43 ft bgs in November 2018, T-3 peaked at 65.39 ft bgs in December 2018, K-Bar #6 Observation Well peaked at 77.78 ft bgs in February 2019, and K-Bar #7 Observation Well peaked at 43.18 ft bgs in February 2019. This was likely in response to above normal rainfall in the later summer and fall 2018. The other monitoring wells did not directly track within-season precipitation. The last measurement at Gallery Well in WY2019 was 18.60 ft bgs. Gallery Well is located 120 feet from the river and closely tracked the Rio Grande stage, generally increasing in late summer or early fall following higher flow events. Water levels in Gambusia Well were consistently very shallow, though the manual well measurement collected in April was 4.25 ft bgs—relatively high for the monitoring record—and occurred outside the normal peak period of later summer and early fall. The last manual measurement taken at TH-10 in WY2019 was 34.80 ft bgs, only 0.45 ft higher than the earliest measurement in 1967, consistent with the lack of directional change in groundwater at this location, and apparently decoupled from within-season precipitation patterns. The last water level reading in WY2019 at Oak Springs #1 was 59.91 ft bgs, indicating an overall decrease of 26.08 ft since the well was dug in 1989. The Southwest Network Collaboration (SWNC) collects data on sentinel springs annually in the late winter and early spring following the network springs monitoring protocol. In WY2019, 18 sentinel site springs were visited at Big Bend NP (February 21, 2019–March 09, 2019). Most springs had relatively few indications of natural and anthropogenic disturbances.
