Autora, Grupa. Psychology in the function of the well-being of the individual and society - BOOK OF ABSTRACTS. Filozofski fakultet Niš, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.46630/awb.2021.

Full text
Abstract:
As the guidelines of human attitudes and behavior, the values are extremely important for individuals and for the society. All major societal flaws (violence, war, aggression, criminal, delinquency, lawlessness, corruption, ecological devastation, terrorism, totalitarianism, exploitation, misery, poverty, hunger, starvation, ignorance, fanaticism and others) are result of behavior that is as odd with basic human values. Thus, a value-congruent behavior is a necessary condition for stable and successful society and the strengthening of value-aligned behavior is a planetary task. Psychological research convincingly demonstrated that the values represent and occupy a great field of attitudes and beliefs, one of the three great domains of the psychological trilogy (personality; attitudes, beliefs and values; cognitive abilities). In psychology, we need a clear and elaborated theoretical explanation of values. A comprehensive theoretical model of values (CTV) was therefore developed in last decades. It comprises all important aspects of the values: the structure, hierarchical organization, development, cross-cultural validity and differences, connections to other important psychological and behavioral domains and the role of values in our life. The knowledge of values is necessary, yet it is not enough in order to cope with all risks of individual and societal welfare. Another requirement is therefore crucial, namely the abovementioned alignment of values and behavior. Values that are not accomplished or realized in our behavior are useless. Thus, the research of value–behavior relations is extremely important in psychology. It is one of essential pillars in the scientific basis of a stable society and has therefore tremendous practical consequences. It also brings us closer to the perennial question connected with the role of values in our life: does the behavior that is aligned and congruent with values make us happier or not. Thus, the final part of my lecture will be focused on the empirical answers to that question. And, as research results are proving, the life and behavior which are congruent with the values factually correlate with the happiness and general wellbeing.

Anjum, Rani Lill, and Stephen Mumford. Does Science Need Laws of Nature? Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198733669.003.0018.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a view that as well as causation, science invokes general laws of nature. In one account, the universe is law-governed, but it is not clear whether this is to be understood literally or not. The generality of laws is useful in prediction and explanation. Laws provide also systematicity and simplicity. But it is questionable what the real being of laws is. Their being might reduce to singular powers or tendencies of individual things. While laws could be used in prediction and explanation, it is not clear that laws are indispensable for this purpose. Singular powers might be able to play the same role: or play it better.

Brace, Paul. State Economic Development. Edited by Donald P. Haider-Markel. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199579679.013.026.

Full text
Abstract:
The brief survey of American political development presented in this chapter reveals that state economic development has always been a dominant feature of our politics and economics. Interstate economic competition dates to the Colonies. And throughout our history states have pursued opportunities to use their powers to secure public and private economic advantage, all the while constrained by national government policies and interventions. This chapter considers these developments and current issues in state economic development, which are nested within stable and unstable features of American federalism. The chapter makes it clear that there are opportunities for subnational governments to adopt policies to limit firm and investor tax exposure to attract or nurture coveted economic enterprises. These opportunities can be attractive to voters as well as the demands of powerful and well-organized economic interests seeking private benefit where costs can be socialized. The author makes clear throughout the chapter that economic development efforts have promised broad benefits but in practice they have produced unbalanced rewards and costs.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates the particulars of Marzia's and Jamila's decisions to marry, the circumstances of their marriages, and the impact of their new status on their professional activities. It was clear that marriage had changed their lives, bringing both joys and disappointments. Jamila's life was especially changed because she had produced two children in four years. Both women believed they had married worthy men and had used their knowledge of how marriage practices should work to affect how they would work in their own marriage arrangements. In their situations, it was also clear that region, economic capacity, education, and individual family practices affected their expectations of spouses and married life as well as their experiences as married professional Afghan women.

Abstract:
Chapter 4 considered the family’s behaviour at court when things were going well for them. This chapter picks up those threads at times of political crisis, which were, it is clear, more frequent for this family than is sometimes recognized. As well as the falls of Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard in 1536 and 1541–2, Howard women were involved in rebellion in Wales between 1529 and 1531; a poorly timed clandestine marriage in the middle of 1536; and, possibly, the Pilgrimage of Grace towards the end of the same year.

Full text
Abstract:
The global decision-making methodology is a simple and effective tool for decision-making. It bypasses the need to determine the cost of service or cost of product as well as the product’s or service’s profit. Global decision-making methodology works well for pricing decisions, make-or-buy decisions, termination of services, bid pricing, determining service mix, and investment decisions. The methodology consists of three stages and provides practical tools for decision-making such as the measurement profile and the cost-utilization diagram. The methodology takes into consideration economic benefits as well as strategic benefits and intangible ones. It is simple to use, intuitive, and clear to communicate.

Levesque, Roger J. R. Empirical Assessments of the Implementation of Laws Addressing School Segregation and Diversity. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190633639.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter analyzes research related to the necessity of remedial approaches as well as potential alternatives to addressing racial disparity and the segregation of schools. These constitute critical analyses due to the manner in which the US Supreme Court addresses group classifications relating to race. These analyses reveal scant empirical evidence that addresses the law’s direct needs. Notably, it is not clear that integration efforts that use racial classifications are necessary to address the ills described by the legal system. In addition, it is not clear that alternatives, such as using economic status to shape school districts, increase integration in ways that reduce the harms associated with discrimination. In the end, the conclusion is not that these approaches could not receive empirical support; rather, it is that researchers simply have not engaged in the type of research needed to address key legal claims.

Korkeila, Maarit, Bengt Lindholm, and Peter Stenvinkel. The obese patient (metabolic syndrome). Edited by Giuseppe Remuzzi. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199592548.003.0168.

Full text
Abstract:
Overweight and obesity cause pathophysiological changes in renal function and increase the risk for chronic kidney disease in otherwise healthy subjects. This should not be a surprise as the risk factors for metabolic syndrome largely overlap with those for chronic kidney disease. Intentional weight loss has beneficial effects on risk factors, but long term effects are less clear. Bariatric surgery does seem to achieve rapid benefits on blood pressure and proteinuria as well as on other aspects of metabolic syndrome, but its long term implications for kidney function are less clear cut as there may be an increased risk of nephrolithiasis, and possibly AKI and other complications.Obesity in haemodialysis patients is one of those paradoxical examples of reverse epidemiology where a factor associated with negative outcomes in the general population is associated with better outcomes in dialysis patients. The same is true for high blood cholesterol values. Interpretation is complicated by complex competing outcomes and confounders.

Abstract:
This book provides a clear and accessible account of kangaroos, showing how their reproductive patterns, social structure and other aspects of their biology make them well adapted to Australia’s harsh climate and demanding environment. Since the last edition of this book nearly 20 years ago, much more is now known about the biology and ecology of these iconic animals. This completely revised edition describes these new perspectives and attempts to counter the many urban and rural myths that still exist.

Bowes, Ashley. A Practical Approach to Planning Law. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198833253.001.0001.

Abstract:
Planning law is one of the most fast moving legal areas, with major structural changes to the planning system occurring since 2014 . In this continually evolving arena the fourteenth edition of A Practical Approach to Planning Law is an authoritative and reliable resource for all those working in the area, providing a comprehensive and systematic account of the principles and practice of planning law. The text guides the reader through each stage of the planning process, from permission applications through to disputes and appeals in a clear and accessible style. Containing coverage of all recent cases as well as important legislative and policy developments since the publication of the previous edition, particularly those arising out of the Neighbourhood Planning Act 2017, the Housing and Planning Act 2016, the Infrastructure Act 2015, and the Deregulation Act 2015, this new edition provides an invaluable introduction to the subject for professionals and students alike. The A Practical Approach series is the perfect partner for practice work. Each title provides a comprehensive overview of the subject together with clear, practical advice and tips on issues likely to arise in practice. The books are also an excellent resource for those new to the field, where the expert overview and clear layout promote clarity and ease of understanding.
