Abstract:
One way to interpret the organisation of refugee welcome in Europe is by thinking about the tension between the official response and the grassroots response to the events. This tension has evolved in different ways in different countries, but in general it is possible to distinguish between a bureaucratic tendency to abstract welcome into a specific problem or policy domain, and a different, often opposite, tendency to welcome in spontaneous, solidaristic and autonomous ways. Starting from the premise that welcome necessarily entails more than simply permitting entry and is inherently emotional and relational, this lecture explores a series of questions. How can genuine, spontaneous welcome be preserved under the pressure of statist and nationalistic logics and demands? How can we hold onto welcome as something meaningful when it seems to be under attack from not only right-wing nationalists and factions that draw spurious connections between refugees and security threats, but also the very architecture of bureaucracy? What relationship does welcome share with legalistic logics and practices? To what extent can welcomers and welcoming initiatives be supported by international cooperation, global organisational and communication systems, and resource-gathering mechanisms? And what role can research play in improving our understanding of welcome? By raising these questions the lecture aims to initiate a discussion about the nature, practicalities and possible futures of welcome in geography and the social sciences more broadly.

Abstract:

Rocco, Madeline. "Welcome to the Family." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2016. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/762.

Abstract:
My family is a collection of characters and big personalities, often with very strange, but brilliant characteristics and interests. When looking for a model that would be consistent with the look and concept I envisioned – witty, comedic, populated with eccentric characters, with carefully and specifically detailed visuals – the films of Wes Anderson, particularly The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), Moonrise Kingdom (2012), and The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), came to mind immediately. Each of his stories is very deliberately structured with a playful sense of chaotic charm, which is the tone I hope to capture in my storytelling. And, not coincidentally, I noticed that when people talk about my extended family, they refer to us as ‘the real-life Tenenbaums,’ meaning that each person is unapologetically who they are with larger-than-life personalities. Growing up hearing wild tales of life with my grandparents in their New York apartment from my mother and extended family, I was inspired to create my own film version of these stories. In choosing to emulate this director’s style within my film, I intend to capture the light-hearted spirit of my family in a manner that is easily recognizable and which is in keeping with its character.

Pope, Turia R. "Welcome to the Branch." VCU Scholars Compass, 2006. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/917.

Full text
Abstract:
Welcome to the Branch is a two-act play that investigates issues of cultural differences in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (or LDS church), more commonly known as the Mormon Church. Set in modern-day, downtown Richmond, Welcome to the Branch follows two very different members of the LDS church as they examine and try to understand both their religion, in the context of its cultural and social history, and their place in it. One is Molly, a Caucasian, middle-class young woman from Utah, in Richmond temporarily for her husband's graduate school; the other is Aina, an African American, single mother living in Mosby Court who has recently joined the LDS church. While Aina struggles for survival and looks for meaning in a church where, historically, she would not have felt welcome, Molly slowly comes to terms with the limitations of her own sheltered background.

Abstract:
Casual empiricism suggests that the arrival of a major technology company into an area has the ability to transform the local economy. I examine the economic impact on residential real estate rental prices by the opening of offices by four of the top technology companies—Apple, Facebook, Google, and Microsoft. Rents are about 2.8% lower in metropolitan areas with top technology company presence compared to metropolitan areas without top technology company presence. Taking this economic outcome into account may influence the public and policymakers’ willingness to give tax breaks and other incentives to attract major technology companies.

Krause, Shane Peter. "Not Welcome: Writing Horror in Australia." Queensland University of Technology, 2005. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/16449/.

Full text
Abstract:
"Not Welcome" is a thesis containing an original dark genre screenplay called Acolytes and an exegesis called "Not Welcome": Writing Horror in Australia. The screenplay is about two boys, victims of years of bullying, who find a way to rid themselves of their bully for good, exchanging one problem for something much worse. But it's an elaborate and calculated lie. The truth is Acolytes is about the concealment of a crime and not the vengeance of a victim. Acolytes is intentionally moody, oppressive and obtuse--it has a true crime-scene ambience. The power of the story lies in its truth--the truth that it seeks to uncover and the truth of the style of its telling--and, just as is the case with real-life crime, the "truth" is often murky and far from clear-cut. The accompanying exegesis explores the domestic funding and production climate for dark genre projects. It argues that Australian genre scriptwriters and filmmakers have often faced hostile funding agencies and genre-timid producers. It examines the requirements of dark genre scriptwriters and filmmakers in bringing their work from page to screen. It argues that the onus is on Australian dark genre writers and filmmakers to think beyond funding agencies and institutionalised Australian producers to realise their projects.
