Abstract:
The HighScope Summer Camp for Teenagers founded by David P Weikart in 1963, and operated until 2002, was an international, inclusive gifted education program that aided many young people, including those from disadvantaged social strata, in their personal development and shaped them in a special way. The six-week program stood for a high degree of structure and high expectations from the youth with regard to active thinking, problem solving and responsible action in the sciences, arts, and in social intercourse. Diversity and social justice were organically integrated, as was closeness to nature and a hands-on approach. The author worked on David P Weikart’s team during the summer of 1984 and then helped to found a similar program in Germany. The author’s personal HighScope experience remained intact over the decades and an effective background source of inspiration and orientation for his work in special and inclusive education.

Abstract:
In a widely cited follow-up study of disadvantaged preschool attendees, Schweinhart, Weikart, and Larner (1986a) found that graduates of an early childhood program using direct instruction (DI) methods exhibited higher rates of juvenile delinquency at age 15 than did graduates of two other preschool education models. The present research examined juvenile delinquency outcomes for young children with disabilities in a prospective longitudinal study that tracked the long-term impact of two preschool models—one using DI, the other using a cognitively oriented, child-directed model. We followed 171 children who had been randomly assigned to the two early childhood models. At age 15, the groups did not differ significantly in their level of reported delinquency. Analyses suggest that gender differences in delinquent behavior may provide a more parsimonious explanation than program effects for the earlier Schweinhart et al. findings.

Abstract:
ObjectiveTo find and analyze early descriptions of restless legs syndrome (RLS).MethodsDatabases and textbooks were searched to document the current knowledge on the history of RLS and to identify additional early descriptions of RLS.ResultsTwo recently discovered early descriptions of RLS are presented together with a review of the current knowledge on the history of RLS.ConclusionsThe French physician Jean Astruc described an RLS-like condition in 1736. In his Treatise of the Venereal Disease, he speaks of a minor but frightening kind of pain “wandering all over the Tibia” and leading to “restlessness and tossing of the Feet.” This text was well-known to authors in the 18th and 19th century, but apparently fell into oblivion later on. In his description of “anxietas tibiarum” or “Wadenunruhe,” Melchior Adam Weikard refers to earlier authors. As a dedicated Brunonian physician, he classified it as an asthenic condition and recommended treatment with diluted liquor.

Abstract:
Background. FD (functional dyspepsia) is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder, which lacks effective and safe treatment. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) has been applied in FD treatment for thousands of years with satisfactory clinical outcomes. Zhishi is a classical traditional Chinese medicine used to treat FD. Weikang pian (WKP) is made of flavonoids extracted from zhishi which could effectively alleviate the symptoms of FD. This research aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of WKP in FD treatment. Methods. This was a randomized, double-blinded and placebo-controlled clinical trial. The patients were diagnosed as FD according to RomeIII criteria. Then, FD patients were selected and assigned randomly to either WKP or placebo group. The subjects randomly received WKP or placebo for 4 weeks with 4 tablets each time, 3 times daily. The single dyspepsia symptom (SDS) scale and the gastric emptying function were measured before and after the treatment. Moreover, the safety of the trial and patient compliance were evaluated. Results. A total of 60 FD patients were eventually enrolled in the trial, among them 45 patients in the WKP group and 15 patients in the placebo group. The primary outcome was the SDS scale, including assessments of postprandial distension, early satiety, epigastric burning, and pain. The secondary outcome was the gastric emptying function. Compared with the placebo group, the symptoms of FD in the WKP group were relieved after 4 weeks of treatment (P<0.05). Some minor changes appeared in the four groups, but there were no significant differences in gastric emptying parameters of GER (2-hour gastric emptying rate) and GET/2 (gastric semiempty time) (P>0.05). Severe adverse events were absent. The compliance to treatment was 94%–96%, and there was no significant difference between the groups. Conclusion. WKP can relieve FD symptoms to some extent. This trial is registered with Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR): CTR 20132482.

Abstract:
Rhythmic ability (RA) plays an important role in sports in which music accompaniment is used, such as artistic swimming (AS). The aim of the present study was to investigate RA's relationship with the athletes’ overall performance in AS, as well as the independent scores of AS performance (i.e., Execution, Artistic Impression and Difficulty), taking into account their competitive category and experience. The sample consisted of 47 female artistic swimmers (age 15.8±3.3 years; athletic experience 6.6±3.3 years) divided into three competitive categories (Senior, Junior, and Comen). The High/Scope Rhythmic Competence Αnalysis Τest (Weikart, 1989) was used for the evaluation of RA of participants. Three official AS judges were used to assess athletes’ performance in the water routine session. Descriptive and inferential (i.e., two MANCOVAs) statistical analysis revealed that experience was a significant positive predictor of AS Performance and RA, indicating that as experience increased, athletes’ AS performance and RA also increased. In addition, results showed that athletes in the senior category scored higher in all variables in relation to junior and comen athletes; however, these differences were not statistically significant. <p> </p><p><strong> Article visualizations:</strong></p><p><img src="/-counters-/edu_01/0782/a.php" alt="Hit counter" /></p>
