Abstract:
The molecular flexibility of an inhibitor in ligand-binding process has been investigated by the mass-weighted molecular-dynamics simulation, a computational method adopted from the standard molecular-dynamics simulation and one by which the conformational space of a biomolecular system over potential energy barriers can be sampled effectively. The bimolecular complex of the aspartyl proteinase from Rhizopus chinensis, rhizopuspepsin, and an octapeptide inhibitor was previously studied in a mass-weighted molecular-dynamics simulation; the study has been extended for investigating the molecular flexibility in ligand binding. A series of mass-weighted molecular-dynamics simulations was carried out in which libration of the inhibitor dihedral angles was parametrically controlled, and threshold values of dihedral angle libration amplitudes were observed from monitoring the sampling of the enzyme binding pocket by the inhibitor in the simulations. The computational results are consistent with the general notion of molecular-flexibility requirement for ligand binding; the freedom of dihedral rotations of side-chain groups was found to be particularly important for ligand binding. Thus the critical degree of molecular flexibility which would contribute to effective enzyme inhibition can be obtained precisely from the modified molecular-dynamics simulations; the procedure described herein represents a first step toward providing quantitative measures of such a molecular-flexibility index for inhibitor molecules that have been otherwise targeted for optimal protein-ligand interactions.

In this paper we introduce two types of simulations (forward and backward) and five types of bisimulations (forward, backward, forward-backward, backward-forward, and regular) for weighted networks with weights taken in a quntale, we describe their basic properties and provide procedures for testing the existence of a simulation or bisimulation of a given type and computing the greatest one, in cases when such simulations or bisimulations exist.We also describe basic properties of homogeneous simulations and bisimulations, which relate actors within the same weighted network, and establish relationships between heterogeneous bisimulations between two different networks and homogeneous bisimulations on these networks. In addition, we characterize the greatest forward, backward and regular bisimulations between weighted networks by means of multi-valued multimodal logics.

In binary classification problems, two classes of data seem to be different from each other. It is expected to be more complicated due to the clusters in each class also tend to be different. Traditional algorithms as Support Vector Machine (SVM) or Twin Support Vector Machine (TWSVM) cannot sufficiently exploit structural information with cluster granularity of the data, cause limitation on the capability of simulation of data trends. Structural Twin Support Vector Machine (S-TWSVM) sufficiently exploits structural information with cluster granularity for learning a represented hyperplane. Therefore, the capability of S-TWSVM’s data simulation is better than that of TWSVM. However, for the datasets where each class consists of clusters of different trends, the S-TWSVM’s data simulation capability seems restricted. Besides, the training time of S-TWSVM has not been improved compared to TWSVM. This paper proposes a new Weighted Structural - Support Vector Machine (called WS-SVM) for binary classification problems with a class-vs-clusters strategy. Experimental results show that WS-SVM could describe the tendency of the distribution of cluster information. Furthermore, both the theory and experiment show that the training time of the WS-SVM for classification problem has significantly improved compared to S-TWSVM.

The present work aims to investigate the accurate method of performing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) — Acoustic analysis for axial flow fans in split air conditioner system. A comprehensive simulation procedure is developed to predict flow-induced noise in a system. The three-dimensional domain using k–ε turbulence model and Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings (FW-H) acoustic model is considered to predict noise generated by the fan blade surface. The acoustic and flow performances of the fan are predicted simultaneously using a computational aero-acoustic technique (combining steady flow and noise propagation analysis). The different cases are simulated by varying the blade angle, blade depth, blade width and serrations at trailing edge of fan blade. An impact of each of these parameter on A-weighted sound pressure level (SPL) and mass flow rate at outlet is determined. The numeric value of obtained A-weighted SPL by CFD simulation is found to be in close agreement with the experimental result within 5.4%. Finally, above mentioned parameters are varied in simulation and optimized design is proposed based on A-weighted SPL and cubic feet per minute (CFM). All simulations are carried out in commercially available CFD solver; ANSYS FLUENT 13.

In this paper, we present a weighted network model for the simulation of railway network. Here the stations and section tracks of the railway network are respectively regarded as the nodes and edges of the network model. Using the model proposed in this paper, we measure the distribution of trains and the mean waiting time of trains etc. The simulation results indicate that the proposed model can be successfully used for the simulation of railway network. Some phenomena observed in real railway networks can be reproduced, such as the characteristic behavior of train movement. A comparison with real data for the Netherlands (i.e., the Dutch railway network) is included. It supports the practical values of the proposed model.

The purpose of this paper is to assess the statistical characterization of weighted networks in terms of the generalization of the relevant parameters, namely, average path length, degree distribution, and clustering coefficient. Although the degree distribution and the average path length admit straightforward generalizations, for the clustering coefficient several different definitions have been proposed in the literature. We examined the different definitions and identified the similarities and differences between them. In order to elucidate the significance of different definitions of the weighted clustering coefficient, we studied their dependence on the weights of the connections. For this purpose, we introduce the relative perturbation norm of the weights as an index to assess the weight distribution. This study revealed new interesting statistical regularities in terms of the relative perturbation norm useful for the statistical characterization of weighted graphs.

In this article, we focus on the efficient estimators of the derivative of the nonparametric function in the nonparametric quantile regression model. We develop two ways of combining quantile regression information to derive the estimators. One is the weighted composite quantile regression estimator based on the quantile weighted loss function; the other is the weighted quantile average estimator based on the weighted average of quantile regression estimators at a single quantile. Furthermore, by minimizing the asymptotic variance, the optimal weight vector is computed, and consequently, the optimal estimator is obtained. Furthermore, we conduct some simulations to evaluate the performance of our proposed estimators under different symmetric error distributions. Simulation studies further illustrate that both estimators work better than the local linear least square estimator for all the symmetric errors considered except the normal error, and the weighted quantile average estimator performs better than the weighted composite quantile regression estimator in most situations.

The multi-model ensemble (MME) approaches are highly regarded in climate prediction and risk assessment for their capacity to integrate multiple global climate models (GCMs) and minimize uncertainties associated with individual models. However, the quantitative impacts of spatial scale, weighted ensemble, and bias correction on the spatiotemporal comprehensive performance of MME remain unknown. In this study, we comprehensively assessed the historical simulation capabilities of 41 CMIP6 GCMs at national, basin, and grid scales. Additionally, we investigated the impact of bias correction and weighted ensemble on enhancing climate simulation performance. The results indicate that CMIP6 models exhibit notable differences in simulating regional climate characteristics of China across different scales. Weighted multi-model ensemble schemes incorporating better-performing models consistently outperform equal-weight approaches, achieving an average 20.67% reduction in the DISO (distance between indices of simulation and observation) index, with temporal performance improvements being particularly pronounced. Bias correction played a critical role in the enhancement of MMEs, reducing DISO values by 41.60% on average, particularly in the spatial dimension. Among all MMEs, the grid-scale optimized ensemble (GBQ), combining bias correction, model selection, and performance-based weighting, demonstrated superior comprehensive performance, achieving the lowest DISO values across spatial and temporal dimensions. These findings provide new insights for enhancing regional climate simulation and evaluation, and they provide more reliable scientific information for investigating climate change and formulating adaptation strategies in China.

Abstract Numerical simulations of the atmospheric boundary layer require careful representation of the surface heterogeneity, which involves the upscaling parameterization scheme for the heterogeneous surface parameters. In this study, the sensitivity comparisons of an effective aerodynamic parameter scheme against the area-weighted average scheme in simulating the land–atmosphere interaction over heterogeneous terrain were carried out by conducting multinested simulations with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model at coarse and fine resolutions, for a typical sea–land breeze case in the Bohai Gulf of China. The results show that the limited-area model is sensitive to the aerodynamic parameter scheme and the effective aerodynamic parameter scheme exhibits a better performance in simulating the variables and parameters in the land–atmosphere interaction process, such as surface wind speed, sensible heat flux, latent heat flux, friction velocity, and surface air temperature, among others, for short-term simulations. Particularly, the underestimation of sensible heat flux and overestimation of latent heat flux over heterogeneous terrain with area-weighted average scheme for aerodynamic parameters can be improved with the effective parameter scheme in the coastal regions, where the mean simulation error with the effective parameter scheme is about one-half of that with the average scheme for sensible heat flux and one-third for latent heat flux.

Vulnerability is a major concern for power networks. Malicious attacks have the potential to trigger cascading failures and large blackouts. The robustness of power networks against line failure has been of interest in the past several years. However, this scenario cannot cover weighted situations in the real world. This paper investigates the vulnerability of weighted power networks. Firstly, we propose a more practical capacity model to investigate the cascading failure of weighted power networks under different attack strategies. Results show that the smaller threshold of the capacity parameter can enhance the vulnerability of weighted power networks. Furthermore, a weighted electrical cyber-physical interdependent network is developed to study the vulnerability and failure dynamics of the entire power network. We perform simulations in the IEEE 118 Bus case to evaluate the vulnerability under various coupling schemes and different attack strategies. Simulation results show that heavier loads increase the likelihood of blackouts and that different coupling strategies play a crucial role in the cascading failure performance.

In the realm of web information retrieval, the effectiveness of ranking algorithms plays a pivotal role in providing accurate and relevant search results. This simulation-based comparative analysis aims to explore the performance of two prominent ranking algorithms, namely PageRank and Weighted Page Ranking, in the context of web pages and link queries. By leveraging a comprehensive dataset comprising web pages and links, we conduct a meticulous simulation study to evaluate the effectiveness of these algorithms. Through iterative calculations and convergence analysis, we determine the rankings assigned to web pages based on their importance and connectivity within the web graph. The comparison is carried out using multiple evaluation metrics, including precision, recall, and mean average precision, to assess the algorithm’s performance in retrieving relevant web pages and handling link queries. The simulations provide valuable results of both PageRank and Weighted Page Ranking algorithms, shedding light on their applicability in various information retrieval scenarios. In this paper, we propose a distinctive pilot power allocation algorithm to maximize the sum rate in a multi-cell multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. The algorithm optimizes pilot powers by polarizing the corresponding SINR values. In order to polarize SINRs, the difference between average SINR per cell and individual SINR is calculated for each user of the whole cells. The exponential form of the difference is used in the calculations of the weights for power allocation. New power values are obtained in proportion to these weights. Therefore, the power budget is utilized more efficiently thanks to these optimized power values. The efficiency of the algorithm is measured using the cumulative average SINR of the simulation system. Furthermore, equal pilot power allocation (EPPA) and water-filling pilot power allocation (WF-PPA) schemes are also implemented to compare the performances under the same simulation environments. A vast number of simulations results prove that our proposed heuristic approach is more efficient than EPPA and WF-PPA methods.

Abstract:
This study aims to verify the weighted Computed Tomography Dose Index (CTDIw) coefficients of 3D rotational angiography (3DRA) procedure using Monte Carlo simulation. The Monte Carlo simulation EGSnrc usercode was employed for 3D dose simulations of the rotational angiography procedure. A virtual phantom resembles the head CTDI phantom was constructed, with a diameter of 16 cm and a density resembling polymethyl methacrylate (1.13 g/cm3). A series of virtual phantoms consisting of 5 images with ionization chamber detectors at the center position, 12 o'clock, 9 o'clock, 6 o'clock, and 3 o'clock were acquired. Simulations were performed with photon sources of 70 and 109 kVp for 200-degree x-ray tube rotation. The field of view was divided into narrow, wide, and full beam with diameters of 1.7 cm; 4.9 cm; and 8.6 cm, respectively. The simulated doses at the ionization chamber were processed into weighting factor for weighted CTDI and compared with direct measurements. The dose ratio between peripheral and center positions for 360° CBCT and 200° 3DRA was 1:1 and 1:3 in this study. The weighting factors for 3DRA were determined as CTDIcenter = ¼ and CTDIperiphery = ¾. The measured average percentage difference of CTDIw between our weighted factor and conventional CTDIw was 1.75 % (-3.99 % to 6.08 %). The x-ray tube position of 3DRA impacted the accuracy of weighting factor of CTDIw, with implications for the proposed weighting factor (Wcenter = ¼ and Wperiphery = ¾) when using a 3DRA machine.

Abstract Effects of diurnal variations on tropical heat and water vapor equilibrium states are investigated based on hourly data from two-dimensional cloud-resolving simulations. The model is integrated for 40 days and the simulations reach equilibrium states in all experiments. The simulation with a time-invariant solar zenith angle produces a colder and drier equilibrium state than does the simulation with a diurnally varied solar zenith angle. The simulation with a diurnally varied sea surface temperature generates a colder equilibrium state than does the simulation with a time-invariant sea surface temperature. Mass-weighted mean temperature and precipitable water budgets are analyzed to explain the thermodynamic differences. The simulation with the time-invariant solar zenith angle produces less solar heating, more condensation, and consumes more moisture than the simulation with the diurnally varied solar zenith angle. The simulation with the diurnally varied sea surface temperature produces a colder temperature through less latent heating and more IR cooling than the simulation with the time-invariant sea surface temperature.

Abstract:
Optimal efficiency of least squares (LS) estimation requires that the error variables (residuals) have equal variance (homoscedasticity). In LS applications with multiple output variables, heteroscedasticity can even cause bias. In weighted LS, weights are chosen to compensate for differences in variance. The selection of these weights can be challenging, depending on the specific application. This paper introduces a general method, Geometric Weighted Least Squares (GWLS) estimation, which estimates weights using the inequality between the geometric and arithmetic means. A simulation study explores the performance of the method.

This paper considers and proposes new estimators that depend on the sample and on prior information in the case that they either are equally or are not equally important in the model. The prior information is described as linear stochastic restrictions. We study the properties and the performances of these estimators compared to other common estimators using the mean squared error as a criterion for the goodness of fit. A numerical example and a simulation study are proposed to explain the performance of the estimators.

Abstract:
A weighted densely connected convolution network (W-DenseNet) is proposed for reinforcement learning in this work. The W-DenseNet can maximize the information flow between all layers in the network by cross layer connection, which can reduce the phenomenon of gradient vanishing and degradation, and greatly improves the speed of training convergence. The weight coefficient introduced in W-DenseNet, the current layer received all the previous layers’ feature maps with different initial weights, which can extract feature information of different layers more effectively according to tasks. According to the weight adjusted by learning, the cross-layer connection is pruned to remove the cross-layer connection with smaller weight, so as to reduce the number of cross-layer. In this work, GridWorld and FlappyBird games are used for simulation. The simulation results of deep reinforcement learning based on W-DenseNet are compared with the traditional deep reinforcement learning algorithm and reinforcement learning algorithm based on DenseNet. The simulation results show that the proposed W-DenseNet method can make the results more convergent, reduce the training time, and obtain more stable results.

Data modeling is a very crucial stage for decision making in applied sectors. Probability distributions are considered important tools for decision making. So far, numerous probability distributions have been developed and implemented. Most of these distributions are developed by introducing from one to eight additional parameters. Sometimes, the addition of new parameters leads to re-parameterization problems. To avoid such issues, we introduce a novel probabilistic approach. The proposed approach may be termed as a new weighted sine-G method. The beauty and key advantage of the new weighted sine-G method are that it has no additional parameters. Through using the new weighted sine-G method, a new weighted sine-Weibull distribution is introduced, which is a modification of the Weibull distribution. The estimators of the new model are also derived. Furthermore, a simulation study is carried out to evaluate the estimators of the new weighted sine-Weibull distribution. Finally, a practical application from the reliability sector is considered to evaluate the new weighted sine-Weibull distribution. Based on certain decision tools, it is observed that the proposed model is the best competing distribution for applying it in the reliability sector.

Abstract:
This paper forecasts global mean sea level (GMSL) changes from 2024 to 2100 using weighted singular spectrum analysis (SSA) that considers the formal errors of the previous GMSL time series. The simulation experiments are first carried out to evaluate the performance of the weighted and traditional SSA approaches for GMSL change prediction with two evaluation indices, the root mean square error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE). The results show that all the RMSEs and MAEs of the weighted SSA are smaller than those of the traditional SSA, indicating that the weighed SSA can predict GMSL changes more accurately than the traditional SSA. The real GMSL change rate derived from weighted SSA is approximately 1.70 ± 0.02 mm/year for 1880–2023, and the predicted GMSL changes with the first two reconstructed components reaches 796.75 ± 55.92 mm by 2100, larger than the 705.25 ± 53.73 mm predicted with traditional SSA, with respect to the baseline from 1995 to 2014. According to the sixth Assessment Report of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC AR6), the GMSL change by 2100 is 830.0 ± 152.42 mm/year with the high-emission scenarios is closer to weighted SSA than traditional SSA, though SSA predictions are within the prediction range of IPCC AR6. Therefore, the weighted SSA can provide an alternative future GMSL rise prediction.

In this article [Formula: see text]-class operators are introduced and some basic properties of [Formula: see text]-vectors are given. The [Formula: see text]-class operators include the [Formula: see text]-class operators and [Formula: see text]-class operators introduced by Costakis and Manoussos in 2008. This class also includes the [Formula: see text]-class and [Formula: see text]-class operators defined by Zhang [2012]. Furthermore, for the unilateral weighted backward shifts on a Fréchet sequence space, we establish a criterion under which the shift operators belong to the [Formula: see text]-class. From the criterion it is easy to obtain the existing criteria of hypercyclic backward shifts and of the topological mixing backward shifts. The obtained criterion also reveals the characteristic of [Formula: see text]-class shift operators by the recurrence property. Meanwhile, we obtain infinite topological entropy when the shifts have stronger recurrence property, which generalizes the related results by Brian et al. in 2017.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the complex aerosol dynamic processes by using this newly developed stochastically weighted operator splitting Monte Carlo (SWOSMC) method. Design/methodology/approach Stochastically weighted particle method and operator splitting method are coupled to formulate the SWOSMC method for the numerical simulation of particle-fluid systems undergoing the complex simultaneous processes. Findings This SWOSMC method is first validated by comparing its numerical simulation results of constant rate coagulation and linear rate condensation with the corresponding analytical solutions. Coagulation and nucleation cases are further studied whose results are compared with the sectional method in excellent agreement. This SWOSMC method has also demonstrated its high numerical simulation capability when used to deal with simultaneous aerosol dynamic processes including coagulation, nucleation and condensation. Originality/value There always exists conflict and tradeoffs between computational cost and accuracy for Monte Carlo-based methods for the numerical simulation of aerosol dynamics. The operator splitting method has been widely used in solving complex partial differential equations, while the stochastic-weighted particle method has been commonly used in numerical simulation of aerosol dynamics. However, the integration of these two methods has not been well investigated.

The structure and properties of public transportation networks have great implications in urban planning, public policies, and infectious disease control. This study contributes a weighted complex network analysis of travel routes on the national highway network of Pakistan. The network is responsible for handling 75 percent of the road traffic yet is largely inadequate, poor, and unreliable. The highway network displays small world properties and is assortative in nature. Based on the betweenness centrality of the nodes, the most important cities are identified as this could help in identifying the potential congestion points in the network. Keeping in view the strategic location of Pakistan, such a study is of practical importance and could provide opportunities for policy makers to improve the performance of the highway network.

The proposed family is a combination of the two existing families of distributions and is called a weighted sine-G family. A two-parameter special member of the weighted sine-G family, using the Weibull distribution as a baseline model, is considered and investigated in detail. Some distributional properties of the weighted sine-G family are derived. Different estimation methods are considered to estimate the parameters of the special model of the weighted sine-G family. Furthermore, simulation studies based on these different methods are also provided. Finally, the applicability and usefulness of the weighted sine-G family are demonstrated by analyzing two data sets taken from the engineering sector.

Generalized Pareto distribution (GPD), an asymmetrical distribution, primarily models exceedances over a high threshold in many applications. Within the peaks-over-threshold (POT) framework, we consider a new GPD parameter estimation method to estimate a common tail risk measure, the value at risk (VaR). The proposed method is more suitable for the POT framework and makes full use of data information. Specifically, our estimation method builds upon the generalized probability weighted moments method and integrates it with the nonlinear weighted least squares method. We use exceedances for the GPD, minimizing the sum of squared differences between the sample and population moments of a function of GPD random variables. At the same time, the proposed estimator uses three iterations and assigns weight to further improving the estimated performance. Under Monte Carlo simulations and with a real heavy-tailed dataset, the simulation results show the advantage of the newly proposed estimator, particularly when VaRs are at high confidence levels. In addition, by simulating other heavy-tailed distributions, our method still exhibits good performance in estimating misjudgment distributions.
