Abstract:
We construct two families of few-weight codes for the Lee weight over the ring $R_{k}$ based on two different defining sets. For the first defining set, taking the Gray map, we obtain an infinite family of binary two-weight codes which are in fact $2^{k}$-fold replicated MacDonald codes. For the second defining set, we obtain two infinite families of few-weight codes. These few-weight codes can be used to implement secret-sharing schemes.

Abstract:
A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary inorganic and organic trace minerals in two levels of supplementation regarding performance, diarrhea occurrence, hematological parameters, fecal mineral excretion and mineral retention in metacarpals and liver of weanling pigs. Seventy piglets weaned at 21 days of age with an average initial body weight of 6.70 ± 0.38 kg were allotted in five treatments: control diet (no added trace mineral premix); 50% ITMP (control diet with inorganic trace mineral premix supplying only 50% of trace mineral requirements); 50% OTMP (control diet with organic trace mineral premix supplying only 50% of trace mineral requirements); 100% ITMP (control diet with inorganic trace mineral premix supplying 100% of trace mineral requirements); and 100% OTMP (control diet with organic trace mineral premix supplying 100% of trace mineral requirements). Feed intake and daily weight gain were not affected by treatments, however, piglets supplemented by trace minerals presented better gain:feed ratio. No differences were observed at calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, sodium and sulfur excreted in feces per kilogram of feed intake. Treatments did not affect calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sulfur and iron content in metacarpals. Trace mineral supplementation, regardless of level and source, improved the performance of piglets.

Abstract:
In this thesis we study the application of trace maps over Galois fields and Galois rings in the construction of non-binary linear and non-linear codes and mutually unbiased bases. Properties of the trace map over the Galois fields and Galois rings has been used very successfully in the construction of cocyclic Hadamard, complex Hadamard and Butson Hadamard matrices and consequently to construct linear codes over integers modulo prime and prime powers. These results provide motivation to extend this work to construct codes over integers modulo . The prime factorization of integers paved the way to focus our attention on the direct product of Galois rings and Galois fields of the same degree. We define a new map over the direct product of Galois rings and Galois fields by using the usual trace maps. We study the fundamental properties of the this map and notice that these are very similar to that of the trace map over Galois rings and Galois fields. As such this map called the trace-like map and is used to construct cocyclic Butson Hadamard matrices and consequently to construct linear codes over integers modulo . We notice that the codes construct in this way over the integers modulo 6 is simplex code of type . A further generalization of the trace-like map called the weighted-trace map is defined over the direct product of Galois rings and Galois fields of different degrees. We use the weighted-trace map to construct some non-linear codes and mutually unbiased bases of odd integer dimensions. Further more we study the distribution of over the Galois fields of degree 2 and use it to construct 2-dimensional, two-weight, self-orthogonal codes and constant weight codes over integers modulo prime.

Crossbred bull calves at high risk for morbidity (n = 190; BW = 159 ± 68 kg) were received at a commercial stocker operation to evaluate the effects of meloxicam administered at the time of castration on performance and health through d 30 post-arrival. Calves were assigned randomly to receive either a whey-powder placebo (CON), 0.5 mg/kg BW meloxicam (LOW), or 1.0 mg/kg BW meloxicam (HIGH) administered orally. Calves were vaccinated, knife-castrated, and received experimental treatments on d 0. Meloxicam had no effect on ADG (P ≥ 0.63), morbidity (P = 0.66), or mortality (P = 0.62). A second study was conducted using crossbred calves from the southeastern US and Mexico (n = 472; BW = 227 ± 45 kg) to evaluate effects of an injectable trace-mineral solution administered at time of arrival at a commercial stocker operation on animal performance, health, and serum concentrations of Cu, Mn, Se, and Zn on d 0 and d 45. Calves were assigned randomly to receive saline (CON; 1.0 mL/45 kg BW) or injectable trace mineral (ITM; 1.0 mL/45 kg BW) on d 0. Average daily gain from d 0 to d 42, overall ADG from d 0 to d 139, mortality, and morbidity were not different (P ≥ 0.31) between treatments. Calves originating from the Southeastern US had greater (P < 0.01) overall ADG from d 0 to 139. There were no source effects (P ≥ 0.21) on initial serum mineral concentrations for Mn or Zn; however, cattle originating in Mexico had lesser serum Cu (P < 0.01) and cattle originating in the Southeastern US tended to have lesser serum Se (P = 0.06). On d 45, there were no treatment differences (P ≥ 0.20) in serum concentrations of Cu, Mn, or Zn but cattle that received ITM tended (P = 0.09) to have elevated serum Se concentrations compared to those that received CON.

According to recent reports from the Department of Health (DOH of R.O.C.), the nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has become the eighth most common cancer in Taiwan. The aim of this study was to assess the status of trace elements, including Zn, Cu, Fe and Se, of 25 newly diagnosed NPC patients and compare the levels of above-mentioned trace elements of these NPC patients before and after radiotherapy. The maintenance of ideal body weight is a good index of recovery for cancer patients. Our study is also interested in the possible reasons for quickly loss of body weight of NPC patients during cancer therapy. The control group with similar criteria were included for comparison. Results showed that no significant difference of serum iron, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), serum copper, serum zinc, copper/zinc ratio, plasma selenium and RBC selenium were found before and after radiotherapy. However, differences of hemoglobin, body weight and diet intake between pre- and post-radiotherapy were found. The level of serum copper of cancer patients was obviously higher than control group while the level of serum zinc was lower than control. We proposed that the absorption and metabolism of zinc and copper of NPC patients were influenced by the tumors. The body weight of patients declined during radiotherapy. However, the loss of body weight continued both 3 and 6 months after radiotherapy. The most significant loss of body weight was found in the group of patients received radiotherapy Qd combined with chemotherapy. A total of 15 patients finished the record of diet intake. The intake of calorie, protein, lipid and carbohydrate in these patients varied significantly. The average decrease of calorie intake is about 14.8%. The SMA readings of these patients showed that The levels of albumin and total protein significantly decreased after radiotherapy. It is worth, however, to mention that the readings were still in the normal range. According to our results, we proposed that the maintenance of proper nutritional status is important for cancer patients. Further studies are required for the elucidation of mechanism for the change of trace element levels.

Objectives: The marriage rate and fertility rate of alien mothers are increasing in Taiwan, and the very low birth weight neonates usually utilize more medical resources. Do the very low birth weight neonates born by alien mothers, under culture shock and language barrier, are physiologically poorer than those born by local mothers? The objective of this study were to explore whether there are difference between the two groups in health, and to understand their medical utilization and factors contributing to the differences. Methods: This study uses Group Comparison Design by selecting neonatal intensive care data from the Cardinal Tien Hospital Yung-Ho Branch. The study includes 78 neonates of local mothers and 40 neonates of alien mothers, both were randomly sampled from the neonatal intensive care data. The nationality of mothers was confirmed by telephone in order to increase the validity of this study. The neonatal intensive care refers to the neonates whose birth weight was 1500g and was followed up until 2 years after leaving the hospital. Results: There is no difference between the disease severity rate of very low bodyweight neonates between those born by local mothers and by alien mothers (p=0.345), and the length of stay in Neonate Intensive Care Unit (NICC) is also statistically insignificant (p=0.575). But comparing their subsequent visits after their discharge from intensive neonatal care, alien neonates (1.9) are less frequently than their local counterparts (3.0) (p=0.015**). Conclusions: The study suggests government agency should focus on medical care, follow-ups, and evaluation after their discharge from the hospitals instead of prenatal screening and inpatient care after birth. It is also suggested to provide more concern to family of alien mothers to empower their ability of utilizing medical resource for better full care of the very low bodyweight neonates..

Abstract:
Most existing lower limb orthosis use actuators and active controller to guide the motion of human lower limbs. Actuators with relatively large power are usually required to compensate the gravity effect of the human lower limbs, even for a normal walking. Hence, design of an orthosis for the weight balance of human lower limbs is desired. For the motion compatibility, the human hip joint is treated as a planar pair and the knee joint as a revolute pair. As a consequence, while the lower limb is in motion, the exact positions of the mass centers of the human lower limbs cannot be obtained. Hence, in this work, topological synthesis of the orthosis mechanisms, which can trace the mass centers of the human thigh and shank, respectively, is implemented. The weight balance of the human lower limbs is achieved by fitting a minimum number of zero-free-length springs. Based on the anthropometric parameters, dimensions of the lower limb orthosis is determined and the proposed design is justified by the simulation executed by the software of ProEngineer. Finally, a first generation prototype is built.

Linear-weight indicators of pilengas growth were analyzed when using feed with different protein content. When fed with granulated high – protein feed (52%), the absolute increase was 8.7 g, and the average daily increase was 0.29 g/day. Feed with a protein content of 45% showed less growth results (absolute-4.4 g, average daily-0.15 g/day). This result is due to the high content of protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and trace elements.

We present a theoretical model and parametric study of isotachophoresis based preconcentration of trace analytes in microfluidic devices. We use a simple semi-analytical model to capture the self-sharpening effect of isotachophoretic boundaries and solve the unsteady problem of fluorescent analytes preconcentration inside these boundaries. We evaluate the influence of various experimental conditions to achieve rapid preconcentration of these simple analytes. We also experimentally demonstrate the non-ideal complexities exhibited by biological samples such as proteins and DNA. These higher molecular weight species, due to additional steric hindrance and wall interactions, exhibit more complicated electromigration behavior and preconcentration.

In 1992 Gabriel Orozco, the Mexican artist based in New York, conceived the idea of his work Yielding Stone. The experience consisted in the construction of a plasticine sphere, of approximately the same weight as the artist, which was rolled through the streets of a city. The photograph used to present it summarizes the action and the concept: the soft and imperfect ball appears on a sewage grid, the corrugated marks of these bars have been imprinted on the surface. Later, in different trips, the sculpture has rolled through the streets of each city where it has been exposed, changing its shape slightly, trapping textually layers of urban waste, preserving the trace of its route, reverse trail of the trail in the streets.

Abstract:
This article describes the effect of various doses of mineral fertilizers with trace elements based on pure silicon – “Nanosilicon” on corn plants. It is important to point out that new and perfect varieties are created every year, although, without the use of fertilizers, they will not be able to give the maximum yield. The main nutrients are nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, often forgetting silicon, even though it also plays an important role in growth and development, as well as in the crop yield; in this research, we studied corn in the central zone of the Krasnodar Territory. Fertilizer “Nanosilicon” increased the height of corn plants by an average of 17 cm or 9.9 %; wet weight by 100.4 g/plant or 17.5 %; yield, as one of the main indicators, by 7.68 kg/ha or 15.4 %.

Abstract:
Over the last few years, there have been ongoing efforts funded by TransCanada PipeLines Limited to develop a more fundamentally based procedure to extract a true measure of the dynamic steady-state fracture toughness of linepipe steels. As part of this effort, considerable research has focused on the drop-weight tear test (DWTT) specimen as the baseline specimen to be used in this development. Using instrumented DWTT test equipment, dynamic load-displacement histories were extracted from the experiments. In addition, a visual measure of the crack growth, and the crack-tip-opening angle (CTOA) were obtained from high-speed video equipment. A procedure has been developed using detailed three-dimensional finite element analyses that calculate the J-integral as a function of crack growth for these dynamic experiments. The results from these analyses have been verified using published procedures on similar scale specimens. This paper presents the development of a procedure for calculating the dynamic J-R curve from the load-displacement trace of a pressed-notch DWTT specimen. The slope of the JM-R curves generated provides technical insight into the range of steady-state propagation that occurs during these experiments. The slope of the JM-R curve (dJM/da) is compared to the visually measured CTOA values and conclusions about the relationship between these parameters and the steady-state propagation energy are made. These results are key in the development of a procedure to predict steady-state fracture propagation from laboratory specimen data.

The electromagnetic shakers (also known as voice coil actuators) are commonly utilized for computer controlled force applications. When the force trace becomes harmonic, however, the devices which use rotating eccentric masses are more feasible to operate. If, on the other hand, one wishes to vary three descriptors, the amplitude, frequency and the phase angle of these harmonics the design and the operation of the structure become more challenging. A novel design and control are presented in this paper to achieve this objective with a very favorable ratio between the peak force and the weight. The variation in the force amplitude is taken from zero to Fmax, while the frequency range varies about ±10% around the nominal operating frequency. Indefinite variations of relative phase angle (i.e., zero to 2π) with respect to a given harmonic signal can be achieved using this new device. The transition from a set of the tree descriptors to another set is achieved under an open loop control of the device. On a prototype experimental setting we demonstrate a successful deployment of the control. Such a structure can be used in some cases for generating desired harmonic force excitations, and in some mission critical application, for canceling vibration caused by quasi static harmonic forcing.

Abstract:
The suitability of aluminum alloys in a vast majority of engineering applications forms the basis for the need to understand the mechanisms responsible for their deformation and failure under various loading conditions. The material investigated in this study is AA 2219-T8 aluminum alloy. Supplied by the NASA Research Center, with high strength to weight ratio and corrosive resistance. Containing a unique mixture of aluminum, copper, and other trace elements, this alloy has potential applications in multiple fields including aerospace, defense, and commercial industries. In this paper, the dynamic high strain rate impact deformation of the AA2219-T8 aluminum alloy was performed using the split Hopkinson pressure bars. The evolution of localized strain in the aluminum samples during the deformation process obtained using high speed digital cameras is reported. Microstructural analysis of deformed aluminum samples was also performed using optical microscopes in order to determine the influence of impact strain rate on localized strain along narrow adiabatic shear bands in the AA2219-T8 aluminum alloys. Results obtained indicate that peak flow stress in the deformed aluminum sample depends on the strain rate at which the deformation test was performed. The non-uniformity of the strain obtained using the digital image correlation as deformation time progresses shows two distinct areas of non-uniform strains that may be indicating potential sites for the formation of adiabatic shear bands in the tested samples.

Abstract:
The objective of this paper is to analyze the influence of incoming periodic wakes, considering the variable width, on the integral total pressure loss for two low pressure turbine (LPT) airfoils. In order to reduce the overall weight of a LPT, the pitch to chord ratio was continuously increased, during the past decades. However, this increase encourages the development of the transition phenomena or even flow separation on the suction side of the blade. At low Reynolds numbers, large separation bubbles can occur there, which are linked with high total pressure losses. The incoming wakes of the upstream blades are known to trigger early transition, leading to a reduced risk of flow separation and hence minor integral total pressure losses caused by separation. For the further investigation of these effects, different widths of the incoming wakes will be examined in detail, here. This variation is carried out by using the numerical Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Solver TRACE developed by the DLR Cologne in collaboration with MTU Aero Engines AG. For the variation of the width of the wakes, a variable boundary condition was modeled, which includes the wake vorticity parameters. The width of the incoming wakes was used as the relevant variable parameter. The implemented boundary condition models the unsteady behavior of the incoming wakes by the variation of the velocity profile, using a prescribed frequenc. TRACE can use two different transition models; the main focus here is set to the γ–Reθt transition model, which uses local variables in a transport equation, to trigger the transition within the turbulence transport equation system. The experimental results were conducted at the high speed cascade open loop test facility at the Institute for Jet Propulsion at the University of the German Federal Armed Forces in Munich. For the investigation presented here, two LPT profiles — which were designed with a similar inlet angle, turning, and pitch are analyzed. However, with a common exit Mach number and a similar Reynolds number range between 40k and 400k, one profile is front loaded and the other one is aft loaded. Numerical unsteady results are in good agreement with the conducted measurements. The influence of the width of the wake on the time resolved transition behavior, represented by friction coefficient plots and momentum loss thickness will be analyzed in this paper.
