In August of 1909, Charles Gordon Jelf joined Arthur E. P. Weigall in Thebes to assist him in the preparation of the famous Topographical Catalogue. Jelf kept a notebook in which he recorded details of archaeological work carried out in the course of the 1909–10 season. The notebook, identified as Jelf’s by Donald P. Ryan and Jaromir Malek, and subsequently donated to the Griffith Institute, contains information on unpublished excavations and finds, as well as other details, including the identity of the person responsible for the rediscovery of the famous tombs of Kheruef (TT 192).

Abstract:
Abstract Factual information regarding the low-temperature tolerances of weigela (Weigela florida Bunge) cultivars is essential for identifying cultivars to grow and sell in northern regions of the country [USDA Hardiness Zone 4a;−32 to−34C (−25 to−30F) average annual minimum temperature]. In this study, laboratory freezing tests and a replicated field trial were utilized to compare the relative stem hardiness of 11 recent weigela introductions with that of four standard cultivars representing a known range of hardiness. Freezing tests were conducted monthly from October 2005 to April 2006 on containerized plants over-wintered in a minimally-heated greenhouse under a non-lethal temperature regime conducive to cold acclimation. The cultivars differed substantially in both timing and rates of cold acclimation and de-acclimation in the fall and spring, respectively, as well as maximum midwinter hardiness levels. All of the cultivars, including the cold-hardy standards ‘Minuet’ and ‘Java Red’, were relatively slow to acclimate in early October, but subsequent acclimation rates among cultivars ranged from 0.3 to 0.7C (0.6 to 1.25F) per day between mid-October and mid-November. Maximum midwinter hardiness levels of the new cultivars were within the range defined by the most and least cold tolerant standard cultivars (‘Java Red’ and ‘Variegata’, respectively). With the exception of ‘Java Red’, all cultivars had de-acclimated substantially by March 16, but actual hardiness levels among the new cultivars on this date differed by as much as 10C (18F). Overall, ‘Pink Poppet’, ‘Dark Horse’ and ‘Ruby Queen’ were the hardiest of the new cultivars evaluated with a maximum midwinter hardiness level of−35C (−31F). ‘Alexandra’, ‘Evita’, and ‘Sunny Princess’ exhibited hardiness comparable to that of the moderately hardy standard ‘Red Prince’ and would likely experience moderate to severe injury during colder winters in Zone 4a. ‘Brigela’, ‘Carnaval’, ‘Elvera’, ‘Goldrush’ and ‘Rubidor’ appear to be unsuitable for use in Zone 4a due to late acclimation, insufficient midwinter hardiness, early de-acclimation or a combination of these characteristics. Results of limited testing conducted in 2007–2008 indicate ‘Verweig’, a more recent introduction, is sufficiently cold tolerant for Zone 4a.

Abstract:
The winter-hardiness of seven ornamental shrub species was characterized based on their ability to regenerate and to maintain their ornamental characteristics following winter damage. Lonicera involucrata and Weigela hybrida 'Brystol Ruby' reached full ornamental expression in zone 5b of the Canadian Climatic Classification System, while Cotoneaster dammeri 'Skogholm', Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle, Kerria japonica, Rosa multiflora and Weigela florida 'Variegata' required warmer conditions. Rosa multiflora and Lonicera involucrata survived in zone 2a, Weigela hybrida 'Brystol Ruby' in zone 2b and the other species m zones 3 or 4. The partial expression of ornamental characteristics restricted the utilization of Lonicera involucrata to zone 2a, of Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle' to zone 2b and of Cotoneaster dammeri 'Skogholm' and Weigela hybrida 'Brystol Ruby' to zone 4. Rosa multiflora Weigela florida 'Variegata' and Kerria japonica both received two classifications based on the expression of different ornamental characteristics. Abstract:
Weigela (Caprifoliaceae) is a genus of ornamental plants popular for its phenotypic variation and hardiness, that includes species hybridized to produce the commercially available cultivars. Despite its popularity, limited genetic resources exist for the genus. Twenty genomic simple sequence repeat (gSSR) markers distributed across the genome were developed using low coverage whole-genome sequencing data of Weigela Spilled Wine®. A cross-amplification evaluation with these 20 gSSR markers on a collection of 18 Weigela cultivars revealed a total of 111 unique alleles, including 36 private alleles. A diagrammatic key was constructed to identify cultivars using only six of the gSSR markers, demonstrating the newly developed gSSR markers are immediately useful for cultivar identification. Future uses could include breeding with marker-assisted selection, determining the history of hybridization of the current cultivated lines, aiding in the construction of genetic maps, and assessing the patterns of population genetic structure of Weigela spp.

Abstract:
This thesis was carried out at the Laboratory of Pharmacognosy and the Laboratory of Pharmaceutical technology, at the UFR Sciences de Santé, circonscription Pharmacy, in the University of Burgundy Franche-Comté, to find new natural molecules to encapsulate. First of all, we focused on the natural saponins from plants of the Vietnam biodiversity and the french horticulture, belonging to the three genera Dracaena, Cordyline (Asparagaceae) and Weigela (Caprifoliaceae). The work led to the successful isolation and elucidation of 42 natural saponins using various chromatographic techniques. The structures were determined by ESI mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy. Among the 17 pure compounds obtained from three species of the Weigela genus, 9 oleanolic acid and hederagenin glycosides are previously undescribed ones. From the two species Dracaena braunii and Cordyline fruticosa “Fairchild red”, we isolated and characterized 18 steroidal saponins including 7 new spirostane-types and 6 new furostane-types ones. The cytotoxic activities of the majority of isolated saponins were evaluated against mouse colon cancer (CT26 cells), mouse melanoma (B16 cells) and human liver cancer (HepG2 cells) by MTS assays. The structure / activity relationships were also proposed. On the other hand, we selected a well-known natural molecule to develop encaspulation tests. Among the natural products, curcumin has very interesting therapeutic properties but exhibits both a poor solubility and a low bioavailability, limiting the administration by the oral route. The purpose of this study was to improve the solubility and bioavailability of curcumin as well as simultaneously achieve controlled release in gastrointestinal tract. Pectinate gel beads were prepared based on ionotropic gelation method with the presence of vaious surfactants. After drying, these beads were investigated for physicochemical characteristics (morphological aspects, encapsulation efficiency, stability, physical state) and dissolution kinetics (in vitro release). Antioxidant activity was also determined with DPPH assay. Kolliphor HS15® seems to be the best promising surfactant to increase stability and bioavailability of curcumin

Abstract:
The main objective of the present study is to demonstrate accurate low frequency transient turbulent combustion modeling. For accurate flame dynamics some improvements were made to the standard TFC combustion model for lean premixed combustion. With use of a 1D laminar flamelet code, predictions have been made for the laminar flame speed and the critical strain rate to improve the TFC (Turbulent Flame Speed Closure) combustion model. The computational fluid dynamics program CFX is used to perform transient simulations. These results were compared with experimental data of Weigand et al [1]. Two different turbulence models have been used for predictions of the turbulent flow.

Abstract:
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">A novel one-dimensional multiphase and multicomponent spray model - hereafter referred to as the Kattke-Weigand model - has been developed to predict the penetration length of both vapor and liquid gasoline sprays under flash-boiling conditions, such as superheated injections. Its formulation is based on mass and momentum equations for unsteady jets and is therefore capable of capturing dynamic effects. Experiments were conducted in a constant volume chamber using various ambient and fuel temperature conditions and a six-hole GDI injector with a separated jet. Macroscopic spray parameters were extracted from the measurements to verify the model's ability to predict both liquid and vapor penetration length and the corresponding spray angles.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">Apart from the separated jet of the injector used, the other five jets interact strongly with each other under flash boiling conditions, resulting in spray collapse, and thus affecting spray characteristics. The prediction of collapse is very sensitive to calculations of vaporization and air entrainment. Since these submodels cannot be validated directly, a calibration method was developed, that is based on a three-dimensional reconstruction of all fuel sprays of the injector used. For this purpose, all optical measurements performed in the constant volume chamber are utilized. As a result, a three-dimensional representation of the spray collapse can be calculated from the combination of the 3D spray reconstruction and the entrainment and vaporization submodels. The validation of the collapse leads indirectly to the calibration of the entrainment and vaporization submodels in the Kattke Weigand model. Latter is applied to gain a deeper understanding of the interaction between spray collapse and both liquid and vapor phase penetration.</div></div>

Abstract:
New methods are reviewed for forming images of faint objects. Camera data are modeled as a doubly stochastic Poisson process to account for quantum limitations and apparent jitter from propagation of light through weak turbulence, camera vibration, and tracking errors. The new methods fall into two categories depending on the model that can be assumed for the jitter. An approach that generalizes the Richardson-Lucy iteration for image restoration from quantum-limited data is obtained via statistical estimation theory when a stochastic model for the jitter is available. Faint-object (i.e., quantum-limited) and bright-object alternatives to the phase retrieval methods of Fienup for second-order correlation data and of Weigelt for third-order correlation data are obtained when the jitter is assumed to be piecewise constant during snapshots of the object.

Full text
Abstract:
Bispectral imaging is one of the most promising methods for high angular resolution imaging through turbulence. On astronomical objects, crowded star fields with individual stars as faint as 16th magnitude have been imaged by Weigelt et al. with a 1.5 m telescope in a few minutes of observing time. One virtue of the technique is its claimed insensitivity to telescope aberrations. In this paper we present a computer study of the effects of aberrations (including de-focus) on the bispectral transfer function. Two major conclusions can be drawn: (i) as the seeing deteriorates, the bispectral transfer function becomes less sensitive to telescope aberrations, and (ii) the average phase of the bispectral transfer function is not exactly zero for a finite number of images, and its departure from zero (for a fixed number of images) increases as the aberration increases.

The naphthalene sublimation and the liquid crystal technique are two methods being used for measurements of the heat transfer coefficient on turbine airfoils. In this paper the results obtained with the two methods for the same compressible flow conditions are compared. The measurements were performed in a free jet test facility on a flat plate and a cylinder. The free stream Mach number ranged from M=0.4 to 0.8. The naphthalene sublimation technique was applied to obtain the local Nusselt number, based on the Sherwood number, applying a new analogy function (Häring, Weigand (1995)). These results were compared with measurements on the same test arrangement using the transient liquid crystal technique. A good agreement between the two measurement techniques and correlations was found for the entire Mach number range. An application of both techniques on a turbine airfoil confirmed this observation. The sublimation technique was also applied to measure the local heat transfer coefficient on a turbine vane at exit Mach numbers up to M=0.9 and exit Reynolds numbers up to Re=1.8e6. The experimental results were compared with the two dimensional boundary layer code TEXSTAN (Crawford, 1986).

Abstract:
The deciduous shrubs ornamental varieties reproduction is an urgent issue for nursery management at the present time. Due to the increased demand for planting material for landscaping needs, there is a need to analyze and improve the reproduction technologies of ornamental plants. Propagation by green cuttings is one of the most effective methods of vegetative propagation, in which all the varietal characteristics of the parent plant are preserved. The purpose of the study is to identify the various species and varieties of ornamental shrubs green cuttings general rooting trends in the Voronezh region, which will be later used for landscaping. All of the 11 experimental varieties show above-average rooting rates. 10 varieties have a rooting coefficient above 0,8. According to the data, obtained during the study, the most promising variety turned out to be the Physocarpus opulifolius `Little Angel`, which showed 100% rootability. The Cornus alba ‘Sibirica Variegata’ demonstrated rootability by 88%. Weigela florida 'Alexandra' has taken root by 91%, and among the spiraea varieties, the best rooting result showed Spiraea japonica ‘Little Princess' - 91%. The Euonymus alatus also has a high rooting rate of 92%.
