Full textThe purpose of this study was to develop a new drivetrain for Wedas current robot pool cleaner W50. Currently, the pump is integrated in the drivetrain which contains only one motor running both wheels and pump. This causes a critical problem affecting cleaning when encountering inclinations in the pool, the robot slides down the slope. To get a better understanding of how the product works, the project group made study visits to Weda. The group documented and observed how the current model and its components are mounted. Interviews were conducted with caretakers and janitors at various municipal swimming pools and hotel pools to get a deeper understanding of how these robot pool cleaners are used and what areas for improvement that exists. The research was used as a foundation for suggestions of new and alternative components for the new concept. The different solutions were then evaluated using a decision matrix to determine which components should be included in the final concept. The work has been carried out in close cooperation with Adigo Drives, which assisted the group with their expertise regarding motors and powertrains. The results culminated in a final concept with a new powertrain and a lower weight than the existing robot.

Full textThis thesis has been carried out at Weda AB regarding their bottom suction robot B600. The purpose of the project has been to achieve an increase in the robot's degree of automation to eliminate the need for monitoring and at the same time reduce the robot's operating time per cleaning cycle. To increase the degree of automation, a deviation of the course that occurs in connection with the robot's transition from the deep part of the pool to its shallow part has been investigated. The focus has been on reducing this deviation by developing a mechanical accessory that can be easily mounted on the robot. Two iterations of the prototype have been manufactured and tested. The second iteration could not validate the solution due to unforeseen problems. As a result, a third iteration has been theoretically proposed with the aim of solving these problems. Continued testing of the third iteration will thus be decisive for whether the concept as a whole will work as intended.

Full textThe underwater machine YT-800 is one of Weda AB's largest cleaning robots sold and used today. To succeed in selling and marketing this product in the best possible way, Weda thinks that the more data they have for the product, the more attractive it will be to future potential customers. Therefore, one of Weda's goals was to compile a CAD model of the underwater machine with associated drawings. Since Weda's staff lacks this knowledge, the documentation assignment was offered as a thesis project to two students at KTH in Södertälje. During this process, information on the selection of material, tolerance, drawing format and CAD assembly procedure was gathered to obtain the necessary recourses to perform the documentation. With an update of the product drawings, it is possible to order products without the need of other companies.

Full textThe purpose of this thesis is to examine and generate alternative concepts for the pool brushes and bottom plates used in the W50 underwater cleaning robot. The reason is that the current rotating brushes used on the W50 require thorough and consistent servicing to function as advertised, the other cause is that the bottom plate is produced in stainless steel which causes electrolytic corrosion on the surfaces of other components that are made in aluminum. Brainstorming, material research, 3D-modeling and prototyping were used to achieve tangible results. Several tests were conducted during the execution phase to give a live demonstration of how the final product is meant to perform. The results of the execution phase became fixed brushes for the W50, redesigned control arms and a bottom plate in ABS plastic. The results of this thesis work were demonstrated with the help of both 3D-modeling and physical models. Finally, the goals and purposes of this thesis were achieved.

Full textThe thesis work aims to find a MEMS gyroscope for the W2000, a cleaning robot available at Weda AB. The gyroscope will be used to correct the course of the cleaning robot when it deviates from its specified route. Currently the W2000 does not have a sensor to adjust. To find the most suitable gyroscope for the cleaning robot, several MEMS gyroscopes were examined by gathering information and contacting various companies for guidance with our situation. The MEMS gyroscope which was found and implemented in W2000 was OMNI LPMS-CU2. The gyroscope was chosen because it had the same output type and communication protocol as the PLC built into the W2000. A test was performed to see if the implemented gyroscope could correct the course as it was turned from programmed path. The result of testing was successful which shows that the W2000 was able to adjust when it deviated. The degree project proposes recommendations and improvements for further work on this project. Although it was a satisfying result, it was only the first step in making it functional. Several tests and investigations must be done on the W2000 in order to implement the MEMS gyroscope as a whole.to insert text

Full textThe academic field of organization studies has paid, in the past several years, a growing attention to the social and environmental impacts of economic activities, to their management as well as their governance. The idea of a corporate social responsibility (CSR) came to materialize and embody the commitment of corporations against unsustainable activities, even if the voluntary or constrained character of this phenomenon remains a matter of debate. Additionally, the prospects of CSR in terms of concrete transformations leading to more sustainable and democratic practices are still questioned. Critical scholars of CSR have, more recently, tackled these issues by pointing to the need for bringing power struggles back in the study of CSR. Although CSR principles aim at managing a multiplicity of stakeholders, critical scholars have highlighted that CSR practices took shape as a discursive power designed for maintaining and enforcing existing practices and power asymmetries, thanks to a marginalization of protestors and those trying to threaten their continuity.This doctoral project is precisely drawing upon such critical perspectives on CSR in order to understand comprehensively the political mechanisms according to which a corporate power manages to rise so as to counter potential protests and secure its own perpetuation. More particularly, this project devotes a significant attention to the implications of such corporate power on powerless stakeholders, highlighting the specific means implemented to manufacture powerlessness, starting from the following research questions: what are the modalities, mechanisms and black boxes upon which the legitimation process of corporations’ social and environmental impacts relies? What are the techniques and technologies of power designed and implemented by corporations in order to do so? How do they manage to maintain and renew their power in the face of struggles, contests and denunciations trying to challenge it?The design of this doctoral project relied on two different stages: an exploratory study of a multiplicity of CSR discourses articulated within and around a political CSR arena of the mining industry ; an in-depth case study of Weda Bay Nickel, i.e. a mining project undertaken by a French multinational corporation, Eramet, in far-off Indonesia. The methodological background of the doctoral project draws upon pragmatic constructivism and qualitative methods in order to comprehend and deconstruct the paradox according to which the Weda Bay Nickel case is at the same time praised for its exemplariness and fiercely contested. Data collection consisted in a systematic inventory of published data, interviews with a multiplicity of stakeholders (N = 41), as well as a period of three weeks ethnography in the Indonesia North Maluku region, where the mining deposit is located. Data analysis was conducted following a descriptive narrative approach, allowing for the production of a narrative which starts from the context of manufacture of corporate powerfulness, from a mere object of geological then financial speculation to a project of development that must be achieved, thanks to historical contingencies, return-on-investment self-fulfilling imperatives, as well as the forging of a coalition of interests. The narrative continues to portray the manufacture of powerlessness of protesters, rebellions and social movements, highlighting that the failure to contest corporate power cannot be associated to a powerlessness per se. Accordingly, the manufacture of powerlessness is shown to be of a socially constructed nature, relying on the implementation of framing and coercive forms of power by the corporation and its allies. Framing and coercion being the cornerstones of a policy that seems to go far beyond a search for legitimation. Instead, they can be subsumed into the idea of a domination process, experienced as non-disputable and non-reversible by the powerless stakeholders

Full textDuring this project the possibilities to monitor and adjust the direction of a pool cleaning robot with a MEMS gyroscope are evaluated. The robot chosen for the evaluation is manufactured by Weda AB. The concept is to add a MEMS gyroscope to the robot, which will give the control unit (PLC) feedback regarding the direction of the robot. The evaluation includes general information about MEMS gyroscopes, where they are used, common built in errors etc. To be able to select a suitable MEMS gyroscope the needed sensitivity is calculated. The needed sensitivity is based on requirements from Weda AB. The evaluation also includes a market survey which shows that the needed sensitivity cannot be fulfilled by products available on the market. The market survey is based on nine manufacturing companies and a recommendation from a distribution company called Avnet. One of the prominent MEMS gyroscopes was used to carry out two tests. The tests were designed to mimic motions of the pool cleaning robot. The test result shows that the gyroscope has good repetition accuracy, but it is not trustworthy when the rotation speed is low. The test result was discussed with the manufacturer and they think that the non positive result is caused by the automatic calibration.
