Barreda, Davila Albert. "Website Interactivity as a Branding Tool for Hotel Websites." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2014. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/6245.

Full text
Abstract:
The dissertation explored the relationships among Website interactivity, brand knowledge, consumer-based brand equity and behavioral intentions in the context of hotel Websites. Based on an in-depth literature review, a theory-driven model was proposed and ten hypotheses were developed. The dissertation employed an empirical study based on a survey design, and collected data via a marketing company. Respondents who booked a hotel room online using hotel branded Websites in the last 12 months were approached to complete the online questionnaire. Four hundred ninety six (496) respondents completed the online questionnaire by answering to questions related to their last hotel booking experience. Analysis was conducted in two phases: (1) Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and (2) Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The overall fit of the CFA model and the final SEM model were acceptable, indicating an adequate fit to the data. The results suggested that the two dimensions of Website interactivity, namely system interactivity and social interactivity, positively impacted the components of brand knowledge, and that system interactivity had a stronger impact as compared to social interactivity. Although, social interactivity was not found to have a significant direct effect on brand awareness, the results showed that social interactivity had a significant impact on brand image. Furthermore, the relationship between brand equity and behavioral intentions was positive and significant. The empirical study offered theoretical for utilizing Website interactivity as a branding tool in the hotel context. Additionally, the results provide practical insights into branding strategies, Website development, and behavioral intentions enhancement. Very few studies have empirically examined and incorporated Website interactivity dimensions and brand knowledge with consumer-based brand equity and behavioral intentions. This gap in the literature has been compounded by an absence of empirical studies on Website interactivity as a tool to develop brands and behavioral intentions in the context of hotel Websites. The present dissertation closes this gap in the literature by reporting on a questionnaire of US adult travelers that offered data on those theoretical associations. Conceptually, the results support the influential impact of Website interactivity on brand elements and behavioral intentions.

Abstract:
The World Wide Web has emerged as a powerful communications medium. With the development of new technologies, organizational websites are getting bigger and more complex, using design elements such as sound and motion to engage users' attention. This project will look at how users respond to the ways designers and developers present information on the web in a dynamic form which incorporates sound and motion. The research will focus on evaluating the communicative effectiveness of websites (particularly websites with different degrees of dynamic content in them), and will see if certain ways of presenting dynamic content are more effective than others. The method used will consist of observing users while they try to accomplish specific tasks on selected websites, through interviews, questionnaires and through verbal protocol ('think aloud') analysis. Effectiveness will be measured by such things as how long it takes them to complete each task, how successful they were in finding the necessary information, and the ease of use. Other factors which provide possible explanations for differences in effectiveness will also be measured; these will be drawn from two theoretical bases: communication theory (Fiske, 1982) and social psychology (Ajzen, 1991; Klobas & Morrison, 1999). The outcome of the research will be identification of problem areas associated with the effectiveness of information delivery by dynamic sites. Guidelines for communication designers, information architects and developers of websites, as they evaluate the success of dynamic sites, will be an appendix to the research.

Abstract:
The history of web is not so long. It’s only 20 years old. By January 1993 there were fifty Web servers across the world, by October 1993 there were over five hundred. Beginning from 2002, new ideas for sharing and exchanging content such as blogs and RSS (Rich Site Summary), rapidly gained its popularity on the Web. This new model for information exchange is called Web 2.0. Instead of using static HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) pages, nowadays there are a lot of the websites where you can actually change the content by yourself without editing the HTML, for example facebook.com, twitter.com, vk.com and much more others. Abstract:
Although, today, website design still contains many variable design elements which strongly influence its design outcome, like browser usage, platforms, user preferences, window size, connection speed, computer speed, colour support, software support, and font support, the original design idea still plays an important role. Emotion is difficult to measure or evaluate. Designers need to understand its importance and how to measure emotion efficiently in order to undertake the subsequent design stage. Positive emotions are as important as negative ones-positive emotions are critical to learning, curiosity, and creative thought, and today research is turning toward this dimension (Norman, 2004b: 19). To understand users' negative emotions can supply a better solution for design problems. Both users' likes and dislikes are important when exploring the role of emotional design. The fieldwork consisted of two pilot tests (the initial pilot test-I. P. T. and the second pilot test-S. P. T. ), a website impression test (W. I. T. ), and an improved website impression test (I. W. I. T. ). The research methods involved Think-Aloud usability testing, Emotional Probes testing (EPs testing), and questionnaires. In addition, the evaluation method used a coding system and statistics. Triangulation was used in making consistent the process methods and evaluation methods. The research outcomes include a fashion website design reference model, an insurance website design reference model, and the website impression test system. Through conducting the fieldwork, the importance of emotional design can be identified in the website design field. The whole research process and research outcomes supply one solution for researchers and designers to predict users' emotions in design outcomes.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Websites are incorporated in organizations to support their mission and guarantee effective information delivery within an efficient information workflow framework. In this context, content managers have to constantly monitor the business needs and reflect them on the structure, contents and interaction paradigm of the institutional websites. This task is not trivial, nor automated, being difficult to guarantee that these websites are synchronized with the actual business requirements. The overall goal of this work is the conceptualization, development and evaluation of an application able to assist usability experts in the analysis and visualization of interaction patterns of organizational web based systems. It should be able to highlight the most critical website areas, based on the analysis of website structure, contents and interconnections. For this purpose, a conceptual model and architecture has been proposed, as well as a set of visualization methods designed to facilitate that analysis. In order to validate the proposed conceptual models, the architecture, information structures and several visualization methods, a prototype was developed, evaluated and refined. It can be considered as an experimental research platform, capable of integrating and testing specific visualization schemes and visual correlation procedures, and is part of an ongoing research program of University of Aveiro. Specifically, this work introduces a layered architecture that supports simultaneously synchronised multiple views, as well as novel visualization, inspection and interaction mechanisms. The prototype integrates these visualization methods in an application able to capture, compile and analyze the information related to the structure, contents and usage patterns of a website. This work is meant mainly to help usability experts or content managers to organize the informational space of an institutional web site. However, this application is not supposed to directly provide solutions for the usability problems of the site but to offer the means to help its users take decisions based on the interpretation of the usability problems identified and highlighted during the analysis process.

Baker, D. "Self-harm and suicide websites : a discourse analysis of the accounts of website users." Thesis, University of East London, 2006. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.532600.

Full text
Abstract:
Our current understanding of self-harm and suicide websites is limited and few studies have attempted to explore this phenomenon. Despite this lack of knowledge, they have been heavily criticised in both the clinical literature and the wider media. They have been accused of being 'pro-suicide' and 'antipsychiatry' and some have argued that they 'encourage' suicide and should be banned. This study sets out to explore the perspective of people who use these websites. It is based on the transcripts of interviews with ten people, who were recruited directly from such sites and interviewed via e-mail. Discourse analysis indicated that the participants constructed self-harm and suicide as complex, multifaceted phenomena. The former was considered as principally a way of coping with painful and distressing experiences. The latter was described as an informed choice and a right. These constructions were used to contest the views of these behaviours that were deemed to be prevalent in wider society, namely that self-harm was a form of attention seeking and suicide was the product of mental illness. Participants drew on discourses of 'empathetic understanding', 'friendship', 'community' and 'recovery', when talking about self-harm and suicide websites. These constructed the sites as friendly, supportive communities, which play an important part in the recovery process. One possible function of the discourses is that they give website users access to positive and socially valued identities. They construct the sites as an alternative way of coping with life's difficulties; an alternative both to self-harm and to conventional medical and psychiatric services. The discourses also resist the dominant view of self-harm and suicide websites in the professional literature and the wider media. The latter offer negative constructions, which may serve to protect the status of those professions and to defend them against the idea that their interventions for self-harm and suicide are, for some at least, aversive and ineffective.

Lyngarkos, Barbara. "Examination of the relative importance of website elements for users of manufacturers representative websites." Thesis, Northcentral University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3723180.

Abstract:

The purpose of this quantitative non-experimental study was to extend and enhance the growing body of research related to electronic commerce by examining the relative importance of content, ease-of-use, promotion, made-for-the-medium, and emotion elements of manufacturer’s representatives’ websites from the perspectives of site users, and to determine if the relative importance of these website elements varies as a function of occupational category. As these things are currently unknown, manufacturer’s representatives do not currently understand how to apply these critical elements to create a successful web presence. In this study, participants consisted of 90 graduates from four year accredited programs having earned a degree related to the art or science of illumination with a minimum of 5 years involvement in the lighting industry. The mean for content (M = 38.34, SD = 13.45) and ease-of-use (M = 34.17, SD = 12.96) indicated they were the most important website elements. Substantially lower means were found for emotion (M = 7.23, SD = 6.30) and promotion (M = 7.40, SD = 6.55) as well as made for the medium (M = 12.86, SD = 8.48) indicating these website elements to be less important. The mean ratings for the five website elements as a function of occupational group indicate little variation between the occupational groups in terms of the relative importance of the five website elements. Content and Ease-of-use were rated as more important than Promotion, Made for the Medium, and Emotion for all five occupational groups. The findings of this research suggest future research is needed taking industry specific contexts into account. In order to accomplish this, future research could be performed on a larger scale, with multiple industries. As the Internet continues to evolve, more research will be needed to evaluate how new technologies will affect the design of websites, and the effect on website element importance. Future research could also examine the relationship of industry, income, age, gender, or other demographics to website element preference. Research relating to the application of existing theory in an electronic commerce context is also an area for future research.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to establish what techniques Swedbank can employ to improve the performance of their external website. Several optimisation techniques for improving front-end performance are presented from user experience and server load perspectives. The website is then evaluated based on the principles identified to determine if and how it can be improved, whereupon testing is employed to determine the benefits of implementing these techniques. The evaluation shows that the Swedbank website can be improved in several ways; the most important being to employ text file compression, caching headers and to combine images together. The report concludes that Swedbank should implement at least these three techniques as they are the most cost-effective from both a user experience and server load perspective.

Abstract:
Research reports that the search for health information is the fourth most popular activity being done on the web (Pew Internet & American Life Project, 2004). However, for disabled persons, barriers experienced when interfacing with the Internet may cause healthcare websites to be inaccessible to them. This study explores the level of accessibility of healthcare websites and the relationship between accessibility and usability by determining how compliant state department of health and human services websites are with accessibility and usability guidelines. A content analysis of each state’s department of health and human services website was conducted. Results revealed that state department of health and human services websites are not very compliant with accessibility guidelines, are somewhat compliant with usability guidelines, and overall are not very accessible. The findings also indicate that there is a significant moderate relationship between accessibility and usability which suggests that the two concepts are interconnected.

Mahmoud, Siham Mukhtar. "Evaluating and enhancing websites : a case study of an Eritrean state owned media website - shabait.com." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/49952.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2004.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Ministry of Information of Eritrea is basically aimed at providing the society with news, information, education and entertainment. In addition to its service presentation through radio, TV and printed press the Ministry of Information has taken the initiative to present its services in the digital way by publishing a website known as shabait.com. But as the technique is new to the country as well as to the organization, it is to be expected that there will be inaccuracies in the way the website was designed. Hence, evaluating and redesigning shabait.com with the goal of making it informative, attractive and easy to use will be very beneficial to the organization as well as to users of the website. This recently launched website is not very attractive and not successfully directed to its users. Therefore, the main aim of this study is to assess and find the best way of presenting information digitally to the Eritrean society, as well as to anyone interested in finding out about Eritrea through the State owned media website. This study was firstly approached by gathering previously written relevant information from books, journals, and the Internet. In addition to that interviews with concerned people in Eritrea were held to understand the aim, difficulties and challenges of the website. Subsequently the website was assessed according to the evaluation criteria developed, based on the literature review. The evaluation of the website assumed three different approaches of qualitative as well as quantitative types. A usability test with both quantitative and qualitative questions was done through a questionnaire, which was analyzed statistically. A competitive analysis, of qualitative type with two international websites was also made. In order to create a good quality website, it is essential to have clearly specified goals, policies and strategies, and adequate advanced human as well as technological resources, so that it will be easy to overcome the common challenges such as competition, diversity of users, budget constraints, and inadequacy of policy instruments. The findings of the evaluation of shabait.com indicate that the website is not attractive, is user unfriendly, of low content quality as well as with low download speed and, more importantly, was not advertised well. Therefore, shabait.com is not fit to be considered as a sole first hand information provider website for the Eritrean society as well as for anybody who is concerned about Eritrea. At the end of the study recommendations of how the website can be modified to be successful are listed.

Abstract:

To be able to reach new audiences and to be able to target new markets, companiesnowadays find great need for localizing content of their online gaming sites. Thisreport highlights the different pitfalls and best practices that need to be consideredwhile targeting an online gaming site towards international customers. These bestpractices have been extracted from contemporary literature and reports and havethen been used to evaluate the work of a company providing an online gaming site. This evaluation has only taken into account the work done by the teams developingthe site, thus no managerial and marketing staff have been approached. The evaluationof the company globalization work has shown that their main problems lie in theprocesses and communication surrounding this kind of work. Many of the pitfalls thatthe company have fallen into may very well be removed by deciding on neededartifacts, processes, and software solutions that could remedy these problems. Suchsoftware could be for example translation memory software that may aid translatorsin their day to day work, providing more consistent translations to the site.

Lafleur, Mary-Lou Terry. ""Spirit Camp" : indigenous website preferences." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/31733.

Full text
Abstract:
The Internet has become an important medium for disseminating information about archaeology to the public. Research by archaeologists on how they can use the Internet is in its infancy. This thesis examines an Indigenous group's perspectives on the delivery of archaeological content through websites. The Spirit Camp archaeological site is located in Stó:lo Territory in the Fraser Valley, British Columbia. The Spirit Camp website project was created to explore the Stó:lo people's preference regarding graphic design and interactivity in two otherwise identical websites. Understanding Indigenous perspectives is essential for collaborative projects and is beneficial to both archaeology and Indigenous communities if done with respect and trust, as this can lead to a better understanding of history. This thesis discusses and analyzes feedback obtained from the Stó:lo about the two Spirit Camp websites and the dissemination of knowledge about their ancestors via the Internet. The more graphical website guides the viewer with a storybook-like interface while the other website allows readers to view material in plain text with a standard menu and scrollbar. Feedback from 24 participants was collected through an individual survey questionnaire, and three age-based focus groups: youths, adults, and Elders. This research shows that enhanced graphic design and increased levels of interactivity in websites do influence website preference. Elders telling stories, colour, photos, games, music and moving objects are examples cited by Stó:lo members as additions to future websites which enhance their experience. All the male participants preferred the more graphic website, while women's preferences were 53% in favour of the more graphical website. Data from the focus groups demonstrates that viewers' opinions vary by gender and age. This research informs us how to effectively work with and respect Indigenous peoples. It does so by suggesting the use of culturally sensitive methods, such as interviews and focus groups, to acquire Indigenous perspectives on the presentation and dissemination of archaeological information.

Abstract:

Because data on alumnae/i is difficult to collect and change over time, obtaining up-to-date information on graduates — for the purposes of highlighting their professional achievements and facilitating networking — is a challenge faced by many higher education institutions. Social networks provide a means for alumnae/i to share successes, but viewing this information typically involves an account or a paid subscription. In this project, I address these issues by designing and implementing a free, easy-to-use, and updateable Mills Computer Science alumnae/i website backed by a database. The website has the potential to showcase the most recent or impressive alumnae/i achievements and prominently feature all graduates' accomplishments via their profiles. Additionally the database can store manually provided alumnae/i information and extract further data from LinkedIn. Evaluations of the project indicate that users and administrators find the website easy to search, navigate, and update and the information provided helpful. Because of its versatile design, this project could serve similar needs for other disciplines and institutions.

Abstract:
For companies operating on the web, a high usability on their website are of outmost importance for customers to keep using their services. Over the years many usability principles and methods have been developed to help companies to achieve a high usability on their systems. This thesis aims to help Beebyte identify usability problems on their website, find out how users perceive its usability, and then come up with recommendations on how to improve it. To do this a heuristic evaluation and a user test were conducted. Each user test session was accompanied by a questionnaire and a post-test interview. The result presents several of usability problems found by the heuristic evaluation and the user tests, and a summary of the post-test interviews and questionnaires. The sources of the problems are then analysed, and recommendations are presented based on established usability principles, my own experience in the area and the test participants opinions from the post-test interviews. The questionnaire answers are discussed and analysed to get a better idea on how they rank the website from a usability perspective.

Manuel, Sue. "Strategic management and development of UK university library websites." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2012. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/10958.

Full text
Abstract:
This research assessed website management and development practices across the United Kingdom university library sector. As a starting point, the design and features of this group of websites was recorded against criteria drawn from the extant literature. This activity established core content and features of UK library websites as: a search box or link for searching the library catalogue, electronic resources or website; a navigation column on the left and breadcrumb trail to aid information location and website orientation; homepage design was repeated on library website sub-pages; university brand elements appeared in the banner; and a contact us link was provided for communication with library personnel. Library websites conformed to 14 of the 20 homepage usability guidelines examined indicating that web managers were taking steps to ensure that users were well served by their websites. Areas for improvement included better navigation support (sitemap/index), greater adoption of new technologies and more interactive features. Website management and development practices were established through national survey and in-depth case studies. These illustrated the adoption of a team approach to website management and development; formal website policy and strategy were not routinely created; library web personnel and their ability to build effective links with colleagues at the institution made a valuable contribution to the success of a library website; corporate services and institutional practices played an important part in library website development; library staff were actively engaged in consultations with their website audience; and a user focused approach to website development prevailed. User studies and metric data were considered in the website evaluation and development process. However, there were some issues with both data streams and interpreting metric data to inform website development. Evaluation and development activities were not always possible due to staff/time shortages, technical constraints, corporate website templates, and, to a lesser extent, lack of finance.

Abstract:
Engagement of stakeholders in government website communication has emerged as an important strategy that can build trust, improve transparency and strengthen loyalty between governments and their citizens. This is because websites provide access to a broader spectrum, offer unlimited storage of information and rapid feedback. This main purpose of the study therefore was to find out how the Lesotho and South African national governments utilise their websites to engage stakeholder’s in websites communication for maintaining and building mutual relationships. The literature review for this study covered the role of public relations in government, different kinds of governments’ stakeholders and the importance of engaging stakeholders in website communication for relationship building and maintenance of such relationships. The methodology that was employed involved analysis of twenty websites which were selected using purposive sampling technique. Coding sheets were designed and used to collect data based on the three principles of dialogic communication namely: Ease of interface, Generation of return visits, Usefulness of information and the two models of communication which are One-way communication and Two-way communication. The results revealed limited efforts for stakeholder’s engagement in both Lesotho and South African government ministries and made recommendations on how this challenge can be addressed. The study concluded that the two countries can improve stakeholders’ participation and engagement in websites communication by aligning their websites with the three principles of dialogic communication and two models of communication.

Abstract:
Despite the proliferation of educational material on the Internet, few published studies document the strengths and weaknesses of using the World Wide Web as a teaching tool. This work describes the design, use, and evaluation of a site created as a supplement to the Analytical Chemistry course. The site included the following elements: content pages with textual descriptions of the concepts discussed, hyperlinks to Web that provide information about topics in chemistry that are relevant to the course, an eletronic forum that enables students to pose questions and instructors to answer them, glossary, a chatroom and a tool for writing and sending reports. The results presented here will allow us to determine how best to develop other WWW resources and how best to utilize the site discussed here. The research population consisted of two chemistry professors, one teaching assistant and 32 undergraduate chemistry students who voluntarily participated in this research. All navigation for each subject was recorded. Research tools also included semi-structured personal interviews with faculty and teaching assistant, and a student´s survey. During the semester of use, the site was accessed 560 times. The site was mainly used for writing and sending reports and reading content pages. Only a few students used the forum to contact instructors and ask them questions. The analysis of student use of the site suggests that they are able to identify the areas that cause them trouble and are able to use supplemental resources to help them in those areas. Interviews with professors indicated that none of them had used the Web as support to the teaching in the Analytical Chemistry course. Analyzing the student\'s survey, we found that they noted that access to Web-based learning materials was valuable and contributed to their learning as well.

Abstract:
The Internet has grown rapidly over the past two decades and researchers continue to discuss the potential benefits of Internet use depending on how an individual utilizes it. Researchers argue that a large part of the advantages from Internet use stem from visiting capital-enhancing websites that provide individuals with educational, financial, occupational or networking opportunities that help cultivate human, cultural, and social capital. Despite these prospective benefits, previous literature finds that women lag behind men in overall frequency and variety of capital-enhancing website use. This article extends the literature on capital-enhancing website use by testing two possible explanations for why the gender gap exists: 1) the unequal division of household labor, and 2) non-capital-enhancing website content geared towards men. The findings from an analysis of General Social Survey (GSS) data from 2000-2004 indicate that the gendered content of Internet websites may play a large role in determining women and menâs capital-enhancing website use. I conclude with a discussion of the implications for gender inequality in the digital age.

"Evaluation of four ecommerce websites for specific website design features." Thesis, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/3890.

Full text
Abstract:
Many companies involved in the seed industry have launched ecommerce ventures, these include amongst others, Starke Ayres, Johnny's Selected and Opposition 1. Amazon.com is the undisputed leader in ecommerce retailing. There are various website design features that are available that can be used to enhance the users online experience; however the implementation of these features are inconsistent across ecommerce websites. The websites of Starke Ayres, Johnny's Selected, Opposition 1 and Amazon.com were evaluated against a list of website design features (best practices model) that would enhance the user's online experience when interacting with the website. The best practices model was setup considering the user enhancing website features that would satisfy the website functional requirements of Content, Communication, Commerce and Community, as well as user enhancement through the use of navigation features. The cluster analysis was conducted to establish the relatedness of the four websites for the implementation of the website design features identified in the best practices model. It was found that the websites used a varying number of website design features that would enhance the user's online experience. Also, none of the sites satisfied the best practices model completely, thus there is room for improvement even for Amazon.com. It was recommended that Starke Ayres and Opposition 1 commence the improvement of the website with the implementation of the low cost features which are relatively easy to implement as these would significantly improve the website without the requirement of large amount of capital. Significant investment of capital will however be required to improve the website so that it is at the cutting edge of website design. The website needs to be developed into a cutting edge website in the industry so that the company can develop its ecommerce venture into a strong competitive advantage.

Internet marketing is being fast developed with the prevailing of internet, but domestic website evaluation activities mostly emphasize homepage design and content quality at present (Hsi-Peng Lu, 2000). The study will build the evaluation structure of information content from the perspective of the internet marketing. We expect to pay administrators and experts to assess websites by different angles. In addition, we try to integrate the evaluation structure into design of website evaluation decision-making model, and expect to help administrators and experts to assess website more efficiently. The research develops hierarchical structure of website evaluation by relevant literature review including websites evaluation, internet marketing, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). An AHP questionnaires survey was conducted and the weights of each evaluation criterion were obtained. Then we build a website evaluation system, and choose travel website as verification of our model. Three major travel websites-ezTravel, ezfly, startravel were selected to be the object of evaluation, and make analysis and discussion to the result. By literature review,“product”,“price”,“promote”,“place” and “Customer’s relation”(namely 4P + 1C) are the main information content themes. The weight of each group are 13%, 42%, 21%, 9% and 15% for the importance of a travel website. These groups could be further divided into 15 criteria items and 56 concrete criteria. Then we use website evaluation system to assess travel websites, and analyze the performance of each website in 4P +1C criteria groups. The research result provide specific criteria for website design and developing, and make administrator effectively assess website’s performance in internet marketing, and then is regarded as improved reference further.

Often, the only feedback that the user receives in websites is visual feedback. In comparison with visual feedback, for which there have been many empirical studies, exploration of sound has been slower, but the use of sound in websites is becoming increasingly popular due to the potential benefits it offers, and there is a great deal of general literature on how to design auditory feedback. However, scant specific guidance is available on the relationship between auditory feedback and situation. When providing unnecessary feedback, auditory feedback becomes noise that distracts the user from the task. Thus, the major purpose of this study was to investigate the role of situation in auditory feedback. In this investigation, we designed a website named UN.com that has three scenes and added different numbers of auditory feedback types. The independent variable was the different numbers of auditory feedback types. The dependent variable was the degree of helpfulness and annoyance. All of the earcons and auditory icons followed appropriate guidelines. A two-phase experiment was designed to explore the application of auditory feedback. In the first phase, the better situation in which to use auditory feedback was determined. In the second phase, a redesigned website was verified. The questionnaire consisted of three sections, the first intended to elicit demographic information from the respondents. The second section asked respondents to rate their accepted degree of auditory feedback. In the last section, we modified the system usability scale (SUS) for suitable auditory feedback to focus on the usability of auditory feedback. We found a significant correlation between auditory feedback and website usability. Some auditory feedback emerging more frequently may have a negative effect. For example, the slip sound could be annoying when the number of occurrence exceed five times. In the last phase of the experiment, we achieved the best score in SUS. The present study enhances previous studies’ finding by providing a much more detailed examination of auditory feedback. The results may provide web designers with guidelines for auditory feedback to prevent negative effects.

Taking into consideration the existing financial crisis in Spain and the opportunity it carries for real estate agents and rooms/apartments owners to rent out their properties, roomsDB.net propose to launch a new room rental website to take advantage of the current niche existing in Madrid, Spain. The management team have direct knowledge of developing and running a successful room rental website in Singapore with six years of experience. In the big market of real estate we determined that the best option for us in Madrid is non-luxury apartments/rooms. We are confident that we are not going to find fierce competition in the medium-term and we will take advantage of this to become the leaders in this segment of the market. Moreover, some of the current competitors do not have the option for agents to post their offers in their websites and we do will offer this service. The website will be different from competitors in customer oriented service, user friendly platform, immediate response to enquiries as well as achieving a lower cost base. The promoters plan to raise an initial €60,000 to launch the website with a forecast of obtaining the 25% of the market share in the industry in Madrid. Based on case scenarios forecast, the website is forecast to generate cash from the first year of operation and the business will be also cash generative from the same year. The attached case scenario forecasts show a rapid growth and producing attractive returns. By year five, the return on investment is 55 per cent.

This work presents the results of three studies that investigated the influence of website design on consumers’ emotions and purchase intention for travel websites using a stimulus–organism–response framework. The first two studies addressed how the website’s background color and picture layout can influence consumers’ emotions and purchase intention, whereas the third study investigated the influence of the size and quantity of pictures on consumer’s emotion and purchase intention. The results of these experiments demonstrated that consumer’s emotion and purchase intentions are more positive with regard to buying online from travel websites that are designed with warm colors, and whose layouts feature such as left-hand side images and right-hand side text as well as a few large pictures. These results suggested that sellers and managers should improve the design of travel websites to stimulate consumer’s emotions and purchase intentions.

A bank’s website is an important virtual channel for the bank to interact with its customers. A good design of website’s interactive functions enables the bank to keep their customers, to create more profits and marketing opportunities, and to provide the bank’s website with a competitive edge. So far, no studies on the design of interactive functions of bank websites have been done, and the interactive functions of current domestic bank websites still leave much to be desired and more to be delved into. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the design of interactive functions of bank websites. The study begins with collection and analysis of related domestic and overseas literature on website interactivity and designs of websites’ interactive functions. The compilation of the literature is presented as an Evaluation Table on Website Interactivity (see Appendix Two). It then selects several domestic benchmark bank websites as the targets for multi-case studies. Based on the Evaluation Table on Website Interactivity, the study carries out a profound analysis of four cases of bank websites and integrates the evaluation into Results of Functional Evaluation on Website Interactivity for Banks of Selected Cases (see Appendix Three). This study adopts a multi-case design, which falls in exploration-based case studies. It collects data and observes records by actually operating the interactive functions of the website of selected banks. Developing case descriptions is used as the strategy for data analysis. Both case analysis and multi-case comparison are applied to draw an in-depth description and pros and cons analysis, and to compare the websites across the selected banks. Lastly, guidelines and advice on the design of interactive functions of bank websites are proposed according to the results of the study. The results of the study show that websites of selected banks have the same strengths and weakness in terms of the design of interactive functions, which are: marketing, transaction service, communication and feedbacks, value-added entertainment, and personalization. The websites of selected banks place more emphasis on interactive functions for “marketing,” “transaction service,” “communication and feedbacks” but less emphasis on those for “value-added entertainment” and “personalization.” As the score sheet (with a full score being 232) of the Results of Functional Evaluation on Website Interactivity for Banks of Selected Cases shows, the websites of selected banks which have the best design are presented orderly as follows: Chinatrust Commercial Bank (with its score totaling 178), Jih Sun Bank (with its score totaling 162), Cathay United Bank (with its score totaling 159) and Taipei Fubon Bank (with its score totaling 137). The results for evaluations on interactive functions in all categories consistently show that the interactive functions of the websites of selected banks leave much room for improvement in that they do not conform to the principles for design. Through the outcomes of an empirical study, this study generalizes principles for the design of interactive functions for internet banks and internet ATM transaction service and principles for the design of features which should be added. It also removes evaluation principles which are not suitable for interactive functions of bank websites and propose a guideline for the design of interactive functions of bank websites (see Appendix Four) to serve as a reference index for banks to use while constructing website interactive functions. It takes a further step in sorting out the categorizations in terms of degree of importance, dividing the principles for the design of interactive functions of bank websites into three categories, namely: required principles, advantageous principles and additional principles. Banks are suggested to take the required principles as the basic, necessary principles in the designing of interactive functions of their websites. They are also suggested to provide the advantageous principles which give them competitive edge to increase the assets of their websites. As for the additional principles which are optional, it is up for banks to choose whether to provide or not based on the goals of their websites. Finally, this study suggests a direction for further studies, which is to investigate the degree of satisfaction clients hold toward using the interactive functions of bank websites. Besides, in terms of targets of studies, it is suggested that the number of websites investigated be increased and that overseas websites be included as targets of studies, so as to compare the difference between domestic and overseas bank websites in terms of their design of interactive functions.
