Abstract:
Website hierarchy is a central principle for organizing information in websites with implications for user orientation on the Web. Employing websites for children as case studies, this paper proposes a conceptualization of website hierarchy developed by adapting a tool from systemic functional linguistics to the analysis of websites. This new conceptualization draws on the strengths and reconciles the differences of existing ones in order to reflect the fluidity of websites as hypermedia texts on the WWW and the role that the interaction between content organization, webpage and navigation design plays in revealing a website's hierarchical organization and thereby orienting users within it.

Abstract:
This work presents the results of three studies that investigated the influence of website design on consumer emotion and purchase intention in travel websites with the use of the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) model. The first two studies addressed how the website's background color and picture layout can influence consumer emotion and purchase intention, whereas the third study investigated the influence of the size and quantity of pictures on consumer emotion and purchase intention. The results demonstrated that consumer emotion is more positive toward buying online from travel websites that are designed with warm colors and with layouts having such feature as left-hand side images and right-hand side text, along with a few large pictures. Additionally, the results also showed that consumer emotion has a positive influence on purchase intention in a travel website. These results suggested that sellers and managers should improve the design of travel websites to stimulate consumer emotion and purchase intention.

Abstract:
At present, web applications are one of the most widely used software applications in different organizations. A website is a virtual representation of the structure of any organization. Good user experience of a website is highly dependent on the content organization or design of a website. Thus, the design is a very important factor to develop a high usability standard website. Different types of design techniques are used to develop different types of websites. It is a very challenging task to develop information-intensive websites using a suitable design technique so that the website can serve its intended purpose with enhanced usability and user experience. Therefore, the objective of this research is to compare the performance of two alternate design techniques for developing an information-intensive website. To achieve this objective, the existing design techniques were explored; and selected the Card Sorting and Interactive Dialogue Model (IDM) techniques to design two websites for an orphanage system. Later, the developed orphanage web systems were evaluated with ten participants through a user study; and found that the IDM design technique performs better than the Card Sorting technique in terms of the system’s usability and user experience.

Abstract:
The complexity of Web sites are increasing and transforming into Web applications that contain business logic, interactivity, transaction handling and states. This phenomenon forces the Web developers to adapt more traditional software engineering techniques to keep the Web applications error free, maintainable, reusable, well documented etc. Many Web developers do not use any engineering techniques at all and design mainly to create as fashionable applications as possible with no regards on the application’s functionality. This results in applications that are hard to maintain and with poor functionality. The purpose with this thesis was to see if the use of a more traditional software engineering technique, namely the Unified Modeling Language with the newly added Web Application Extension, resulted in a Web application with good design regarding the maintainability of the application . To investigate the maintainability of an application, the maintainability was further divided into three sub criteria: extensibility, reusability and documentation. These three criteria were then applied on a case study were a Web application was designed. From the analysis of the final design, using the three criteria, the maintainability was derived. The result of the entire investigation showed that the UML WAE had a good support for extensibility, fair support for reusability and very good support for documentation. From these results the main conclusion was derived, that the use of UML WAE resulted in good design regarding the maintainability. However, the result is limited to our case study and the design created in that case. The result may have been different if the three criteria had been applied on a different case. Another aspect to consider is that the quality of a design is often dependent on the knowledge of the persons that carry out the design.

Abstract:
Flat website design has become more and more popular in recent years due to its simplicity and elegance. Nevertheless, the current flat design thinking is mainly applied to conventional websites such as corporate websites. Recently, the increase in public demands has significantly increased the browsing frequency of government websites. To optimize the government website, this study establishes a government website design framework from the perspective of flattening. The established framework can extract flat design elements from the massive flat website design schemes in the past. Based on flat design elements, the particle swarm algorithm (PSO) algorithm in the established framework realizes the design and optimization of government websites. Subsequently, the performance of the CNN, which is used as the fitness function of the PSO algorithm, in predicting public acceptance is analyzed with a case study. The case results show that the average relative errors between the prediction results predicted by CNN and the real public acceptance in two provinces are 2.5416% and 1.4788%, respectively, which indicates that the predicted and real results are in good agreement. Moreover, the linear correlation coefficients between predicted and real public acceptance are 0.9553 and 0.9937, respectively, which further indicates that CNN is reliable as a fitness function of the PSO algorithm. Therefore, it is feasible to use the PSO algorithm to optimize the government website design scheme.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to explore the aesthetical features of corporate recruitment websites, including the website design, style, and color, and to investigate their impact on organizational attractiveness and applicants' intention to apply. By doing so, the study also examines the effects of corporate websites on applicants' perception of the corporate culture and measures the mediating impact of perceptions of organizational culture on organizational attractiveness and applicants' intention to apply for the jobs in the context of Pakistan. The study is based on a laboratory experiment with three hundred undergraduate business students conducted at a university computer lab. Correlation, Independent T-test, One-way ANOVA, and Simple Linear Regression were applied to analyze variables using SPSS. The findings of this study support the hypothesis that website features have a significant positive impact on applicants' perceived organizational attractiveness. However, the website's design does not seem to impact applicants' intentions to apply for the job substantially. The regression analysis results also revealed that the perceived organizational culture partially mediates the relationship between website features and organizational attractiveness and fully mediates the relationship between website features and intentions to Apply.

Abstract:
Purpose A customer’s visit to a retail website is a critical “moment of truth” during which contemporary retailers attempt to simultaneously, during a single web navigation, capture customers’ attention, build rapport, and prompt them to act. By showing how to capture customer commitment over the course of a single website visit, the concept of customer website engagement, defined as “the process of developing cognitive, affective and behavioural commitment to an active relationship with the website”, addresses strategic concerns. Drawing from literature on engagement, the purpose of this paper is to consider how retail websites can engage customers during the course of a website navigation. A conceptual model of website customer engagement underpinned by relationship marketing and communication knowledge, shows how perceptions of the website’s exploration and sense-making potential can activate consumer engagement, and is then empirically tested. Design/methodology/approach Using survey data, measures of the four dimensions of engagement (interaction engagement, activity engagement, behavioural engagement, and communication engagement) and of three drivers are developed and validated. The model is tested empirically (n=301) using structural equation modelling. Findings The results support the process conceptualisation of engagement, which identifies organismic as well as conative stages, and show the distinct roles played by perceptions of informational exploration, experiential exploration and sense-making in activating engagement. Practical implications The study provides online retailing practice with an organising framework enabling online retailing managers to consider how, depending on their product category and their size, they might (re)design their website to optimally produce customer engagement. Originality/value The study contributes to online marketing and retailing knowledge by showing the relevance of the concept of engagement as it pertains to customers’ single navigations on retail websites, and by empirically showing, through a parsimonious model, how engagement can be activated and unfold.

Abstract:
Purpose – Literature-identified website benchmarking (WB) approaches are generally time consuming, survey based, with little agreement on what and how to measure website components. The purpose of this paper is to establish a theoretical approach to WB. A comprehensive design science research methodology (DSRM) artifact facilitates the evaluation of the website against the universal set of benchmark components. This knowledge allows managers to gauge/reposition their websites. Design/methodology/approach – DSRM establishes a website analysis method (WAM) artifact. Across six activities (problem identification, solution objective, artifact design/development, artifact demonstration, artifact evaluation, results communication), the WAM artifact solves the DSRM-identified WB problem. Findings – The WAM artifact uses 230 differentiated components, allowing managers to understand in-depth and at-level WB. Typological website components deliver interpretable WB scores. Website comparisons are made at domain (aesthetic, marketing, technical) and/or functional levels. Research limitations/implications – New/emergent components (and occasionally new functions) are included (and redundant components removed) as upgrades to the DSRM WAM artifact’s three domains and 28 functions. Such modifications help keep latest benchmarking comparisons (and/or website upgrades) optimized. Practical implications – This DSRM study employs a dichotomous present/absent component approach, allowing the WAM artifact’s measures to be software programmed, and merged at three different levels, delivering a useful WB tool for corporates. Originality/value – DSRM identifies the benchmarking problem. Rough-cut set-theory and mutual-exclusivity of components allow the causal-summing of typological website components into an objective WAM artifact WB solution. This new, comprehensive, objective-measurement approach to WB thus offers comparative, competitive, and website behavioral implications for corporates.

Abstract:
This research aims to suggest key design characteristics that are necessary for developing usable e-commerce websites in the Arab world. A comprehensive usability evaluation of four leading Arab e-commerce websites was conducted using the heuristic evaluation method. The results identified major and minor usability problems and major and minor good design characteristics on the selected websites. Based on the results, 51 key design characteristics were suggested. The recommended key design characteristics comprised two levels according to their priority: level one which includes mandatory key design characteristics and level two which includes supplementary design characteristics. The key design characteristics in each level were categorized under specific pages and areas that can be found on any e-commerce website. Such categorizations could direct website evaluators and designers to important pages and areas that should be considered to improve the overall usability of e-commerce websites. The results of this research are particularly important to developing countries which are still facing challenges that may affect the design and accessibility of usable and useful websites. These relate to low speed of accessing the Internet and a lack of website designers who have experience in customers’ needs and websites’ usable design characteristics.

Abstract:
AbstractThe research identifies and evaluates the content and readability of Websites of all radiotherapy departments that provide a Website. As more patients are being referred for radiotherapy treatment each year, the information needs of the public on this subject is growing. Fifty-two per cent of radiotherapy departments within the United Kingdom (UK) and Ireland were identified as providing a Website. These Websites were evaluated, over a period of 2 weeks, using an adapted Website evaluation tool. Five criteria – content, authority, navigation, design and technical aspects – were identified as important aspects of a Website. For each criterion a number of statements were listed and using a Likert scale were marked. Flesch–Kincaid readability tests were used to analyse the readability level of the Websites. Data analysis resulted in the ranking of the Websites. Evaluation scores varied greatly and the readability tests showed 92% of the Websites were written at a level too high for the public. This shows the varying quality of radiotherapy department Websites with scores ranging from 48 to 115, and the varying readability level of these Websites. The research makes suggestions for the improvement of radiotherapy department Websites including the provision of a dedicated Website team within the department, educated in Website design.

Abstract:
In e-commerce, the user interface design of a website is critical to its success. However, there is limited research on how colour and layout design elements influence the perception of e-commerce websites for mobile devices. To bridge this gap, we conducted an empirical study to investigate, how the layout of information and colour temperature of an e-commerce tourism website for mobile device influence essential Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) user experience (UX) design attributes and intention to use the website. The results of our Partial Least Square Path Modelling (PLSPM) showed that both interface design elements significantly influence perceived aesthetics, perceived enjoyment, perceived usefulness and intention to use. Specifically, layout (list = 0 and grid = 1) positively influences perceived aesthetics and perceived enjoyment, while colour temperature negatively influences perceived usefulness and intention to use. The first finding suggests that in tourism website design for mobile devices, a grid layout of products and services provides a better hedonic user experience than a list layout. Moreover, the second finding suggests that cooler-temperature (blue and green) tourism websites are viewed by users as more useful than warmer-temperature (orange and red) tourism websites. We discuss the implications of these findings in the context of website UX design for mobile devices in the tourism domain.

Abstract:
Emotional User Experience Design (eUXD) has become increasingly important for web-based services. The primary objective of this study is to enable users to use websites that are easy to understand and operate and pleasing to use. A checklist tool for an emotional user experience (eUX) assessment that supports web-based medical services is proposed. This tool measures user moods while using medical services’ websites. The tool allocates emotive design-oriented problems and thus defines relevant website design recommendations. A case study was performed illustrating the proposed tool on a website offering medical services. Five variants of this website with different design element categories were created. These variants were assessed, analyzed, and proposed for further redesign in applying the tool. The results reveal the variant and website design elements that best influenced eUX. Significant improvement in eUX is expected with implementation of design recommendations of this study. The advantages of the tool are: (1) measuring emotional responses of medical website users, (2) allocating emotive problems, (3) defining of recommendations for eUX design of web-based medical services, and (4) creation of suitable practices for eUX design of web-based medical services.

Abstract The reason for building a website is primarily to reach target audiences worldwide (or local audiences, as appropriate) and, secondly, to represent a company or organization in the online environment. And if we take the second case, namely online representation is necessary to make sure that website is always updated and that has an improved web design. Trends in web design can have multiple roles: to make a website more attractive and more functional and to increase its traffic and subsequent conversions. Given the evolution of technology, most websites have to suffer some changes so frequent visitors to enjoy right experiences regardless of how they access, so for companies that take seriously the importance of their online website, respecting future trends in the online space is the only way to start a new project. This article brings up some trends in web design, considering this issue of great interest in the online environment. Although it is quite difficult to predict which trends will later develop into the necessity, we must keep pace in this digital world where everything seems to change so fast.

Abstract:
Emotions play a crucial role in human-computer interaction. Emotion research in the field of human-computer interaction has only started recently and continuously evolving through the investigation and understanding of emotional effects. Thus, it forms an intelligent interaction between human and computer by responding effectively to the humans’ feelings. Emotional design generates remarkable user experiences for websites as the emotional experiences create an intense impression on our long-term memory. Recent scientific findings recommend emotional elements to be considered in designing websites as emotions influences one’s perception, conception and decision-making throughout the interaction with a website. A poorly designed user interface leads to bad user interaction while rising the users’ arousal and a displeasing user experience with a website elicits dissatisfaction emotion where consecutively results in avoidance and prevents revisit to the website. This proves the importance of emotional engagement in a website design. This research evaluated users’ emotions toward a Malaysian higher learning institution website which was designed in accordance with the standard Kansei-based web design guideline. The result justified the standard Kansei-based web design guideline for website of higher learning institutions in Malaysia.

Abstract:
Start-ups are young companies that are hardly known, especially during their early stages, by the relevant stakeholders. A start-up's website is, therefore, often the first point of contact for potential customers, investors, or partners. Such a website usually explains the new product or service and presents the founding team with its competencies. The user's perception of the website and its design can be crucial in determining whether the user is interested in getting in touch with the start-up or even considering the purchase of the respective product or service. User’s trust in the website and its operator is essential for this. The so-called trust elements, such as logos, testimonials, or seals, are intended to create trust on websites. So far, the influence of these elements on user behaviour has hardly been empirically proven in a real-life context. Therefore, we have applied the method of A/B testing to the website of a fictive start-up. Trust elements were placed on one variant of the website (A), whereas on the other variant, there were none (B). The experiment shows that the duration of the user sessions does not differ between the two variants. However, more requests were made on the website variant with trust elements. Abstract:
Purpose Website benchmarking theory and the website analysis method (WAM) are benchmark tested across non-commercial tropical tourism websites. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach The abridged WAM benchmarks 280 tropical tourism websites from four continental areas (Africa, Asia, Oceania, and The Americas) and presence or absence of website components objectively rank-scores. Across locations significant website benchmark score differences are determined. In all, 20 of these websites are ranked by an eight expert focus group. These experts also seek-out the existence of allocated common website components. Findings The abridged WAM approach is suitable for benchmarking tropical tourism websites. Website benchmarking scores at-level are determined. At the website, domain, and function levels significant continental area differences exist. Experts cross-check the study. They find it easier to rank websites with fewer components, and show split decisions when determining the existence of common website components. Research limitations/implications This study’s abridged version of WAM uses publicly viewable components to show significant differences across website scores, and identifies some missing components for possible future inclusion on the website, and it also supports the WAM benchmarking theory approach. Practical implications Website managers/owners can apply WAM (or an abridged WAM) to benchmark their websites. WAM is theoretically supported and it systematically allows comparison against the universal set of components and/or against competitor websites. A full or abridged WAM approach to website benchmarking is preferable to subjective or survey-based approaches. Originality/value This study successfully applies the Cassidy and Hamilton (2016) theory and approach to practical website benchmarking.

Abstract:
AbstractEnglish language learning (ELL) websites and digital resources have been recognized as an important source of linguistic and cultural knowledge for English as a foreign language (EFL) learners to explore. The up-to-date information carried by authentic materials is invaluable for learners to develop an understanding of the target language/culture. However, there appears to be a gap between what the designer intends and what the user wants. This paper investigates Chinese university EFL teachers’ perceptions of online English language websites and resources. The study focuses on a number of components of major language areas and skills in ELL websites, website materials, language users’ preferences, and website usability. A total of 1519 English academics from 139 universities across China completed the online survey, and 164 of them voluntarily participated in focus group interviews anonymously. The empirical evidence of this study has highlighted that a pedagogically-oriented ELL website, targeting audiences with a variety of language proficiencies, was much liked by the Chinese EFL teachers. A preference was observed to see more current authentic language, examination-oriented English learning materials and tasks, and Eastern/non-Anglophone topics in the websites. In addition, it is found that website usability is another key factor that would impact ELL website popularity. A well-designed ELL website can effectively assist Chinese EFL learners to enhance their language competence and achieve optimal learning outcomes. This study provides a context-specific empirical base for innovative web-based EFL learning and teaching as well as website design and materials development in China. The proposed key features of a preferred ELL website may help better inform website designers, content writers and evaluators in their ELL website design/evaluation.
