Abstract:
Although, today, website design still contains many variable design elements which strongly influence its design outcome, like browser usage, platforms, user preferences, window size, connection speed, computer speed, colour support, software support, and font support, the original design idea still plays an important role. Emotion is difficult to measure or evaluate. Designers need to understand its importance and how to measure emotion efficiently in order to undertake the subsequent design stage. Positive emotions are as important as negative ones-positive emotions are critical to learning, curiosity, and creative thought, and today research is turning toward this dimension (Norman, 2004b: 19). To understand users' negative emotions can supply a better solution for design problems. Both users' likes and dislikes are important when exploring the role of emotional design. The fieldwork consisted of two pilot tests (the initial pilot test-I. P. T. and the second pilot test-S. P. T. ), a website impression test (W. I. T. ), and an improved website impression test (I. W. I. T. ). The research methods involved Think-Aloud usability testing, Emotional Probes testing (EPs testing), and questionnaires. In addition, the evaluation method used a coding system and statistics. Triangulation was used in making consistent the process methods and evaluation methods. The research outcomes include a fashion website design reference model, an insurance website design reference model, and the website impression test system. Through conducting the fieldwork, the importance of emotional design can be identified in the website design field. The whole research process and research outcomes supply one solution for researchers and designers to predict users' emotions in design outcomes.

Abstract:
This research investigates the possibility of influencing users' motivation with visual persuasion. Visual persuasion is identified as the design triggers that affect users’ first impression, which is seen as the conceptualisation of motivation. While past research studied the effect of web design towards users’ motivation, not many are looking into the persuasive value of the visual design itself. It is foreseen that visual persuasion helps to produce a more persuasive website and consequently, has an impact on web users' first impression of the website. Once motivation is positively influenced, the likelihood for them to stay on a website long enough to influence certain behaviour will be higher. Hence, this research is designed to empirically measure the effects of persuasive visual design on people’s attitude and behavioural intention. The investigation is accomplished by looking at the causal relationship between the variables in the proposed persuasive visual design model. For this purpose, a persuasive model for the destination website is extended. In the persuasive visual design model for website design, the constructs are divided into two factors: 1) the hygiene factor that consists of perceived informativeness and usability as the underlying determinants and 2) the motivation factor that is predicted by perceived credibility, visual aesthetic, engagement and social influence. Meanwhile, users’ satisfaction and behavioural intention are identified as the observed variables. In the early stage of the research, the measurement constructs were identified and pilot-tested. Two web prototypes (non-persuasive website and persuasive website) were developed for an experiment conducted in an actual online environment. Participants of the age 18 or older were recruited with the expediency of Facebook. Each of them was randomly assigned to evaluate a website and answer the relevant questionnaire. Participants were encouraged to invite their Facebook friends to also participate in the research. This makes the sample group non-representative as it relies heavily on volunteers. Once the measurement model of the research is verified and validated, the conceptual model was analysed using Partial Least Squares - Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM); amendments to the model were made as necessary. In general, the results show favourable outcomes as it confirms the significance of visual persuasion in affecting the first impressions on web design. The findings offer new insights into the role of visual persuasion in web design with respect to the relationships between predictors (dimensions of hygiene and motivation factors) and observed variables (users’ satisfaction and behavioural intention). From the theoretical perspective, the research contributes to the understanding of the persuasion process in an online environment. Furthermore, the identification of persuasive visual triggers could help web designers create more effective websites.

Abstract:
For companies operating on the web, a high usability on their website are of outmost importance for customers to keep using their services. Over the years many usability principles and methods have been developed to help companies to achieve a high usability on their systems. This thesis aims to help Beebyte identify usability problems on their website, find out how users perceive its usability, and then come up with recommendations on how to improve it. To do this a heuristic evaluation and a user test were conducted. Each user test session was accompanied by a questionnaire and a post-test interview. The result presents several of usability problems found by the heuristic evaluation and the user tests, and a summary of the post-test interviews and questionnaires. The sources of the problems are then analysed, and recommendations are presented based on established usability principles, my own experience in the area and the test participants opinions from the post-test interviews. The questionnaire answers are discussed and analysed to get a better idea on how they rank the website from a usability perspective.

Abstract:
Although Internet booking system has reached its peak in the recent years many previous researches say there is always a growing interest in the role and nature of design in HCI principles. Small difference can create a large impact in the business of Internet booking system. The future of any online booking system will be heavily depended on how easy and how friendly the system is designed. In our thesis, we are going to suggest what aspects of usability principles are important in making the user interface of current flight booking systems to reach a high degree of usability. For the above purpose we will find usability flaws in the current user interface design of flight booking systems and highlight the potential factors or aspects that make user interface more acceptable to users. To reach this purpose we will use a case study and analyze using an explanation building technique. The empirical data was collected through satisfaction questionnaire which was based on nine “preset tasks” which are designed depending on various usability principles. In our thesis, we will create an understanding on the aspects of usability principles used to make a user interface more acceptable to the users. This understanding will lead future researches in the betterment of interface design of flight booking system.

Abstract:
The project that is presented in this report is the result of a master thesis for the Industrial Design Engineering programme at Luleå University of Technology. The project was conducted towards and together with the company Leosol during the fall of 2020.  For the past couple of years, Leosol has invested time and money into online advertisement. Their advertisement generates a greater visit flow onto their website; however, it rarely produces any bookings of their services. Leosol wants to increase the number of bookings done through their website. This master thesis is conducted to contribute towards Leosol’s goal regarding the online bookings. Therefore, the focus of this project has been to strengthen Leosol’s brand by exploring options for a new graphic profile and a visual brand language. These brand tools were be implemented in a new website.  To achieve this, an altered version of IDEO’s Human-Centered Design process was implemented. By working close to the user, in this case, Leosol’s clients, the current issues and solutions was clarified. Throughout the process, the graphic profile and the wireframe was developed separately. In the last phase of the project, the two was combined into the final concept.  The project resulted in a repositioning of Leosol’s brand, creating a new, more professional tone. The graphic profile was summarized through a poster, describing the new logotype, colours, fonts, imagery and a short description of how to apply them.  This new graphic profile was applied onto the new wireframe, creating the final website. The layout of the website was developed so that the user can quickly identify Leosol’s identity and mission. By implementing a website that truly represents Leosol, there is a bigger chance that the number of bookings increase.

Abstract:
Research reports that the search for health information is the fourth most popular activity being done on the web (Pew Internet & American Life Project, 2004). However, for disabled persons, barriers experienced when interfacing with the Internet may cause healthcare websites to be inaccessible to them. This study explores the level of accessibility of healthcare websites and the relationship between accessibility and usability by determining how compliant state department of health and human services websites are with accessibility and usability guidelines. A content analysis of each state’s department of health and human services website was conducted. Results revealed that state department of health and human services websites are not very compliant with accessibility guidelines, are somewhat compliant with usability guidelines, and overall are not very accessible. The findings also indicate that there is a significant moderate relationship between accessibility and usability which suggests that the two concepts are interconnected.

Abstract:
Since 1997 the non profit organization Friends has worked towards a world where no child should become victim to bullying. In 2017 Friends initiated the international forum World Anti-Bullying Forum where researchers and practitioners can meet and share knowledge. A next step in the development of the forum is to develop a website that can be used for the purpose of establishing the forum further and to create a meeting place during the years between each forum. This master thesis deals with the development of a prototype for a permanent website for the World Anti-Bullying Forum. The main focus of the project has been to create a userfriendly and inspiring platform for the two main target groups, re- searchers and practitioners. In order to achieve this, both literature and creative methods have been used and the work has followed a modified version of the design process Human-Centered Design Approach by IDEO. In order to follow Friends wishes for a website that is as- sociative with their brand, focus on visual communication and illustrations has been key. The project resulted in a user-friendly and vivid website designed for the two main target groups. The website is a platform designed for information and registration regarding upcoming forums as well as a place to find facts and inspiration. The website is associative with the Friends brand while its colour choices and elements indicate that the forum is also something of its own.

Abstract:
Introduction: The purpose of this master thesis at the Luleå University of Technology within the area of Industrial Design Engineering was to improve the design for the website Filmriket.com. By analyzing the website Filmriket, the strengths & weaknesses of the interface and the content were found, and improvements were made to create a more pleasing experience with the website for the users. Background: The website Filmriket.com is an educational website for teachers/ educators and schoolchildren with a focus on movies and moviemaking within the school. The fundamentals of Filmriket are to Watch, Discuss and Create. These three are all connected to the Swedish school curriculum. The website is a nonprofitable initiative, owned by the movie production company Filmpool Nord, intending to reach out to as many schools and moviemaking interested children as possible. All the material on the website has been collected and developed with the help of educators within both schools and the Swedish movie institute. Methods: A literature review was performed to find relevant theories regarding interface design guidelines. A current state was performed to analyze the current website, locating strengths and weaknesses. A benchmarking provided inspiration and knowledge of how similar content to Filmriket can be presented. Interviews were performed with five educators which gave insight into how they interpreted the current website. Two Workshops were held with students and schoolchildren, where 16 schoolchildren got to give feedback on the current website and to create improvements of their own. A major brainstorming session based on user feedback and guidelines within interface design provided a lot of ideas that could be merged into three different concepts. The Circle, Rectangular & Movie theme. The users got to vote for the best concept. One final concept emerged based on user feedback and a concept evaluation based on relevant theory.  Result: The final result presents a clickable prototype of the new website with the following improvements: A search engine is implemented. A new menu is present on every page. A new video layout creating better balance, more content visible in the same space, and less visible text. Better contrast between the background and the written text. More colors, specifically pastel colors. Less need to scroll by being able to close down content and by implementing drop-down menus that take up less space. More informational text that better describes the different pages.

Abstract:

As the internet has become an increasingly growing market for companies, it has also subsequently revolutionized shopping. There are countless different options on the internet for individuals. If a website does not live up to the expectations, there is always another one just a few clicks away. This raises the demands on the retailers, in terms of development and maintenance of their e-commerce websites. In order to succeed, there are many things that have to be considered and addressed. This thesis research discusses some of the most essential questions that may arise during the development of an e-commerce website. The process has been divided into four different sections; graphical design, information design, interaction design, and online trust. Each one of these sectors is important and every website developer should be familiar with them.

Abstract:
With increasing student access to technology and the Internet, Texas school districts have invested in content management systems (CMS), improved technology infrastructure, and professional development with little research available about best practices and current use of class websites. Using the technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) framework, this study investigated how contextual factors predicted the number of website components related to the teacher information, communication, classroom management, and teaching content section of a class website designed by a Texas high school teacher. This quantitative, predictive correlational research design included data collected from a proportional allocation of 191 Texas high school teacher websites representing 20 geographic areas, 5 content areas, 5 grade levels, Title 1 designation, campus enrollment levels, and self-reported teacher technology readiness. Multiple regressions revealed the campus' Title 1 designation was a significant predictor of the number of teacher information and teaching content components included on the class websites of Texas high school teachers. The study revealed that opportunities to access online resources through class websites were reduced for students in Title 1 designated schools. Several possibilities that positively contribute to social change were discovered. Educational decision makers and administrators may use this information to determine where expenditures should be made to ensure development of class websites that meet students' needs. Estimates show a 2-day professional development to create class websites for Texas secondary teachers would cost $93,237,200. Ensuring funds spent results in sites that provide optimal academic support to students could improve learning and bring significant social change.

LaValley, Christopher Travis. "Holistic Model of Website Design Elements that Influence Trustworthiness." UNF Digital Commons, 2018. https://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/812.

Full text
Abstract:
Trustworthiness of a website relies foremost on a good first impression which includes the visitor’s perception of the user interface. The focus of this research is to investigate the effects of website design elements on user perception of trustworthiness of a site and provide a set of guidelines for website designers. The research design is based on Yosef Jabardeen’s (2009) “conceptual framework analysis”. In this research paper, a holistic model is developed to depict the relationships among website design elements and trustworthiness. The model was tested, validated and updated using the results of the repertory grid technique, a process that elicits perceptions about a topic from an individual. For this research, the topic was website trust, the objects were the website design elements, and the constructs were elicited perceptions regarding those website design elements. The repertory grid technique was applied in two stages to a set of participants made up of website users and website designers. Analysis yielded useful information regarding website design associations and correlations of perceptions. The research findings confirmed original suggestions regarding associations and produced an updated, validated model of website design elements. The research indicated that while all design elements had their importance regarding trust, those elements that provided for the function and security of the website rated the highest in importance and expectation. The validated model will aid website designers in understanding what elements are appealing to the visual senses and conjure credibility and trust. Most importantly, this new understanding may help designers to create websites that attract and retain new users and establishing a successful presence on the Internet.

Design practice is explored within Advanced level General Certificate of Education (commonly referred to as AS/A2) Design and Technology, in order to define its particular characteristics. The study uses a theoretical position developed from the Assessment of Performance Unit s (APU) discussion document from 1982 as a framework to explore information retrieval within designing. The position of the study within designing and its place within research related to the use of knowledge, skills and values in designing is clarified. A literature review conducted conceived information retrieval as a characteristic of skill in the APU model. This study has established a consensus position on what is good practice in website development and design, and illustrates the structure of selected sustainable design websites, as well as assessing their navigation. The study indicates which types of information AS/A2 level student designers are seeking and how they use websites within their design work. The drivers behind sustainable design decision-making are identified. The understood consensus of sustainable development and sustainable design as an emerging area in designing is defined. The research is situated within the Sustainable Design Award (SDA) scheme that aimed to implement sustainable development into Design and Technology education and also outlines the content embodied in selected sustainable design websites. AS/A2 level Design and Technology education is used as the context for the main study. Action research was used to help develop the SDA website which was created as a primary assessment tool for the research study, concentrating on students aged 16 to 18. The usability of the selected websites was assessed by undergraduate designers from Loughborough University. A framework was developed and the effectiveness of the SDA website was measured before use, during use and after use . Quantitative and qualitative research methods were used to gather data from the students such as questionnaires, folio assessments and interviews. The results indicate a prominence of website use and sustainable design within AS/A2 level design work, however sustainable design is taught as a separate entity and is not fully integrated into design practice. Sustainable design websites were accessed by half of the 72 students questioned, but only 28% had used the SDA website. The information that the student designers sought fell into two categories: specific information and inspiration, supporting Lofthouse (2001a). The use of these decreased dramatically as projects progressed in AS/A2 level and undergraduate level design education, this pattern was consistent in website use, sustainable design and sustainable design website use. Cluster analysis was carried out on the sustainable design websites with the informative cluster identified as representing the appropriate strategy for effective higher level website design. This cluster included characteristics such as comprehensive content information on sustainability, inspirational images and product examples. Appropriate approaches to the detailed design and development of the SDA website are reported. Future recommended work includes a focus on before use, to investigate the affects of increasing awareness of the website. Relating wider sustainability issues to AS/A2 Design and Technology education is discussed, investigating further the use of eco-design tools as the discussion highlights conflicting opinions. An expansion to the cluster analysis to help define further the four website cluster groups. The development of a website that correlates the emerging patterns of website, sustainable design and sustainable design website use, with work on value judgements completed by Trimingham (2007).

Abstract:

Abstract:
Introduction of web technology have turned the current world into a global village and web design becomes a huge challenge to develop a website in a better way. To develop a user friendly interface and easy access environment of webpage is the key issue of usability in this field. Improved and user friendly interface of a web site is becoming more popular. There are so many mistakes being committed when a designer develops end users interface of a web site. The main purpose of usability in this field is to provide a user friendly, easy access environment. This paper reveals a guideline for usability of the website design. Most of the designer or developer thinks about their websites outlooks rather than thinking about users’ concern. If it becomes difficult to use their website, people won’t revisit their site. So if designers want to have a successful website, they have to ensure that their design fulfills the users’ requirement. The purpose of this paper is to indicate the existing common usability issues which are being overlooked by the designers and developers, and to provide some possible solutions to reduce these usability problems. It also suggests some simple but effective tips and techniques as well as some guidelines for website design that could be helpful for designer and developer if they keep these in mind during designing a website. The results of the paper specify that there should be the interest to designers and developers who are concerned about improvement of usability and more accessibility of their websites by users. In this thesis, I am committed to create the understanding on the aspects of usability principles suitable to make a user interface more acceptable to the users. This understanding will surely be a pilot project for upcoming future researches on the development of interface design.

Baeshen, Yasser Ali Mohammed-Saleh. "Investigating website design factors that influence customers to use third-party websites for booking hotels : the Saudi customers' perspective." Thesis, Brunel University, 2017. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/15467.

Full text
Abstract:
Customers are influenced in the physical world by their surroundings; important factors such as packaging, human interaction and atmosphere (environment) play important roles in any purchase decision customers make. Today's customers are moving towards faster, and more efficient ways of purchasing products/services. One of the most influential features in online purchase decisions is the Virtual Store Atmosphere (VSA). VSA is a marketing tool that not only influences purchase decisions, but it also measures the level of satisfaction in tourism and other industries. A high level of customer satisfaction increases the chance that they will recommend the product/service to other customers. However, despite different studies concerning information technology development and the impact of Electronic Word of Mouth (eWOM) on online Customer Purchase Decisions (CPD), eWOM has been little explored in the sphere of web design. It is vital that this research gap should be addressed, based on the online customer nature and the number of online bookings made in the tourism sector. Based on the above, this study aims to critically investigate and examine the impact of the online shopping environment on eWOM and customer purchase decisions, with respect to online bookings in the hotel industry, and develops a framework. The study aims to assess whether or not this impact is due to customers' web satisfaction and willingness to book a hotel online. Additionally, it looks at the influence of the online tourism environment on eWOM and Saudi Arabian customers' purchase decisions with respect to trust and the perceived risks in the area of hotel bookings made online. This research mainly adopts a quantitative method to achieve the objectives. Therefore, a conceptual framework has been developed based on existing literature concerning eWOM, web design and the hotel industry. The proposed framework has been validated using a measurement scale from previous validated studies. The research embraced and applied two main theories in the study, which are the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Stimulus-Organism-Response model (S-O-R). The research used an online survey of 1,002 respondents, which was distributed between two groups (Saudi national undergraduate students and Saudi national academic employees). Interviews, focus groups, and a pilot study were conducted to validate the survey too. Data analysis applied Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to validate the relationships between constructs and to test the research hypotheses. The findings from this study show that the majority of the environmental factors selected (web design) affect ES and motivate users to book a hotel online; these are: Perceived Ease of Use, Perceived Usefulness, Website Content, Intrusive Marketing Tools 'Pop-up Ads and Banner Ads', Search Engine and Enjoyability, but not System Quality. In addition, the results suggest that one of the organism factors, i.e. eWOM, does not influence CPD. As a result, this study contributes to the customer behaviour and web design/quality literature within the travel/tourism context in Saudi Arabia. It contributes to the existing knowledge and supports practitioners of third-party hotel websites in shaping their web development priorities and enables them to focus on the most influential and critical factors.

Haimes, Paul William. "Designing for communities in bushfire-prone situations: Redesigning the FireWatch website interface." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2015. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/1620.

Full text
Abstract:
This research describes the redesign of Landgate’s FireWatch service – a web-based map application that uses data derived from satellites to provide near real-time bushfire information. FireWatch was originally built for emergency services personnel, but recent Australian state government inquiries have called for individuals, households and communities to have independent access to bushfire information. Therefore, it was necessary to redesign FireWatch with a new remote community-based audience in mind. The thesis describes multiple iterations of a user-centred action research design process that resulted in a publicly accessible web application known as MyFireWatch. Due to delayed access to actual community–based users, scenario-based design and a personas frame-work were created to consider the user’s perspective. These personas then informed the recruitment of community-based users in the remote Western Australian town of Kununurra. Working with these remote community-based users quantified what functionality provided by FireWatch could be useful to this new audience. It also revealed that the information presented to them could be used in unanticipated ways and that satellite information can assist users in identifying key landmarks. However, user feedback indicated a lack of awareness of bushfire map applications in Australia, including FireWatch. Results from an online questionnaire verified that the design process undertaken resulted in a usable interface that met the needs of the majority of users, although several participants noted that the interface was slow to respond to user input. There was significant support for user-sourced fire information, although several participants raised concerns of how the information would be verified and how user-sourced information would impact the usability of the application. Participants used social media but were also highly reliant on traditional media and word of mouth – something that Landgate will need to consider in future efforts to increase awareness of MyFireWatch Two frameworks arose from the research undertaken: a pattern language for presenting map-based hazard information and a personas framework for designing for remote Australian community based users.

Abstract:
This phenomenographic research investigated variation in web professionals' understanding of information literacy. The outcome is of value for the education of practitioners both in the areas of information literacy, and web design and development. Analysis of 23 in-depth interviews with web workers from different stages of web design and development process revealed that they experience information literacy as staying informed, building a successful website, solving a problem or participating in a community of practice. The present research advances the existing understanding of the concept of information literacy, especially in an occupational context. Additionally, using the web professionals' world as the context of the study, the research also contributes to the field of website design and development by shedding light on less-researched experiences of people involved in this industry.

"Evaluation of four ecommerce websites for specific website design features." Thesis, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/3890.

Full text
Abstract:
Many companies involved in the seed industry have launched ecommerce ventures, these include amongst others, Starke Ayres, Johnny's Selected and Opposition 1. Amazon.com is the undisputed leader in ecommerce retailing. There are various website design features that are available that can be used to enhance the users online experience; however the implementation of these features are inconsistent across ecommerce websites. The websites of Starke Ayres, Johnny's Selected, Opposition 1 and Amazon.com were evaluated against a list of website design features (best practices model) that would enhance the user's online experience when interacting with the website. The best practices model was setup considering the user enhancing website features that would satisfy the website functional requirements of Content, Communication, Commerce and Community, as well as user enhancement through the use of navigation features. The cluster analysis was conducted to establish the relatedness of the four websites for the implementation of the website design features identified in the best practices model. It was found that the websites used a varying number of website design features that would enhance the user's online experience. Also, none of the sites satisfied the best practices model completely, thus there is room for improvement even for Amazon.com. It was recommended that Starke Ayres and Opposition 1 commence the improvement of the website with the implementation of the low cost features which are relatively easy to implement as these would significantly improve the website without the requirement of large amount of capital. Significant investment of capital will however be required to improve the website so that it is at the cutting edge of website design. The website needs to be developed into a cutting edge website in the industry so that the company can develop its ecommerce venture into a strong competitive advantage.

The fact that in a laboratory there are several players in the development of different projects and that there is no place to combine all this information makes, not only the process of storage complex, but also the exposure of that same material to the target audience. The lack of a repository, whether it’s on an online platform or not, prevents the transmission of knowledge between members and laboratory projects as well as between them and the outside world, which makes it difficult to disseminate and communicate the laboratory with potential stakeholders. That way, this dissertation presents the design and implementation of a website for the Context Lab that allows not only to externalize what is done in the scope of the laboratory, but also to make it easier for its members to update it in a simple and quick way, allowing not only to create a knowledge store but also to acquire an online presence. This platform was designed and developed according to the website that the laboratory has, also taking into account the interests and needs of its users. For that, it was necessary to develop an investigation on the themes that this project required, as well as an analysis of the target audience and the websites of other entities that serve a similar purpose to what we want to achieve here.————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

Abstract:
This thesis has as a starting point the development of a website for the theater company Teatrão in Coimbra. The original challenge was focused around the redesign of their website aiming for a better, more appealing and more effective website in the communication with their audience. That challenge quickly evolved for something more embracing, exploring Teatrão’s role on society, the importance of its pedagogical activity and its online presence.Teatrão considers communication, the ability for his activities to reach its audience, one of their main focuses. That was the cause of an internship with the objective of rethinking Teatrão’s link with its audience, speci cally on its online presence. The way it is intended to reach the objectives proposed is fromthe personal connection and experiences created during the internship, between myself and the company. That way will be supported with the analysis of several websites, of other theater companies for instance, with the objective of understanding what are the most useful techniques and ways to present information. The internship has two main goals. The first one is rethinkingthe way teatrão communicates with its audience, in a period where portuguese theater is struggling to keep itself in business. This objective has a practical conclusion of redesigning its website so that it becomes more appealing and functional, transmitting in a clear way what is, and what is done, at Teatrão as an institution, explaining its three main parts: theater company, municipal theater and educational service. The second objective focuses around the information gathering, study and analysis regarding websites of other portuguese theater companies, with the purpose of realising if Teatrão’s problem is uniqueto itself, or its something that affects the remaining portuguese theater companies. More than a solution for Teatrão’s problem, this thesis intends to question and analyze the state of the websites of portuguese theater companies, and serve as a possible solution.

This work presents the results of three studies that investigated the influence of website design on consumers’ emotions and purchase intention for travel websites using a stimulus–organism–response framework. The first two studies addressed how the website’s background color and picture layout can influence consumers’ emotions and purchase intention, whereas the third study investigated the influence of the size and quantity of pictures on consumer’s emotion and purchase intention. The results of these experiments demonstrated that consumer’s emotion and purchase intentions are more positive with regard to buying online from travel websites that are designed with warm colors, and whose layouts feature such as left-hand side images and right-hand side text as well as a few large pictures. These results suggested that sellers and managers should improve the design of travel websites to stimulate consumer’s emotions and purchase intentions.

A website not only spreads the message, but also narrows the distance between a visitor and the site owner. Web design and layout affects the readability and usability of a website. Good visual design gives the visitor a deep impression and increases the visit rate and page views. However, most non-professional designers lack the expertise and experience of visual design. Many books or articles propose the site design guidelines, but there are sometimes ambiguity and inconsistency in the guidelines, so that they may be not easily followed by a non-professional designer. This study does not attempt to propose new subjective visual design guidelines for the sites. Instead, we collect the relevant guidelines proposed by experts, and then determine the visual features which can be quantified. Next, we select a set of excellent award-winning websites and a set of general websites, and then calculate the feature values of their pages. Finally the objective design rules can be obtained through the quantitative analysis of these feature values. A non-professional designer can produce better visual quality of the site by following these rules.

In order to develop an irrigation system for farming, the early ancestors in Taoyuan Plateau dug thousands of spleen-shaped farm ponds. Those ponds formed a very unique feature of the landscape and bring the famous name "the hometown of thousand ponds" to Taoyuan. The "tight-knit" distributed irrigation ponds all over the rural land not only made the unique characteristics of the culture, but also become an important tourist attraction. It is alsoan ecological resource of Taoyuan County. In the recent years, countries all over the world have begun to pay great attention to ecotourism market. It has created an eco-tourism prevalent trend. Therefore, the capture of the tourist information will be an important source of media for extended promoting for tourism charm of Taoyuan Bade and enhancing the economic benefits. “Website” in the internet will play a major interacting role. The creation of this project is to design a dedicated website of eco-tourism information for the "Ba-de Ponds Eco-Park" by use of the interactive web site and multimedia features. Throughout the process of the project, we study the literatures of Ba-de, farming ponds eco-tourism, and website designed theory. . We also analyze those relationship and design principles and regard it as the basis of case studies and website creation. Finally, based on the website structure, the website functionalities, and the website visual elements , we sum up the same type or the similar eco-tourism information website. Then we analyze the types of site structures, the content-navigation modes, and the web design elements of visual composition. We then identify one of the most comprehensive elements that construct the whole website and the navigation of ecological tourist information website. We can use this study to plan and create the further project, and even learn for the future design reference.

This thesis is based on the development and implementation of the Marmocaima platform, located in the city of Vale de Cambra. The proposal will have been launched by the company itself, which consists in the of a new look of the existing website, thus involving a very strong premise - to make a platform without dynamism and very outdated in a useful tool for business, with a modern image, appealing and efficient in its communication with the public. Without intending to deviate to other fundamentals than those of the company, the objective is to radically change the websites, but without deviating from the directory of a company in the industry and commerce sector. As Marmocaima is a company that sees the exhibition and publication of its work as a crucial point for the business, as well as enabling its customers to have greater work transparency, the opportunity for an internship focused on a new opportunity for online presence and company communication arose. For this purpose, it was necessary to carry out an investigation on the company, in addition to the bibliographic survey that is essential for sustaining and developing the proposed challenge. In order for all these intentions to be assured, we intend to carry out an analysis of several websites that are the same or similar to the industry and commerce sector in the marble, granite and related processing sector. Through this collection it will be possible to see the best path to follow for the platform’s success. The main objective of the internship is to rethink visual, textual and conceptual communication strategies between Marmocaima and users, in order to guarantee an appealing and functional website.

As the applications of Internet and the fashion of world wide web and the technol-ogy for developing website becoming mature, the number of websites grows with a sur-prising speed. But the lower threshold of website construction also means that the qual-ity of websites can vary drastically since many websites are built by amateurs with little experience. Many factors affect the management performance of the website. Website quality evaluation is thus becoming an important subject. The intentions of this research go deep into analyzing and developing a set of cri-teria suitable for evaluating the quality of shopping websites; build evaluation criteria for shopping websites by literature review as well as interviews with experts question-naire survey and real-site evaluation. Design evaluation criteria and relative weight, to investigate the satisfaction rate of the automated website evaluation system(AWES) that was developed according to the evaluation criteria. Basis consulted to assist web de-signers for design and a tool for analyzing websites, and possible improvements for a website. The results showed that evaluation criteria for shopping website include five major groups: “shopping functions” , “interactive functions” , “website management func-tions” , “administrative tool functions” and “multimedia use functions”. These groups could be further divided into 37 evaluation factors. And then AWES as compared with human inspection result, as well as to compare their differences, data extraction and evaluation accuracy of system. The experimental results are promising and the system has demonstrated its practicability as a great automated website evaluation system.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate and explore the visual comfort appreciation and the influential factors of web pages. Factors that would influence the visual comfort were first specified through literature review and think aloud methodology. Such factors include the layout, hyper links, colors, white space amount, and iconic graphics. According to the result of the pilot test, 15 questions were offered to evaluate the degree of visual comfort of web page design. From factor analysis and regression analysis, the following conclusions have been found: 1. The factors affecting visual comfort of web page design can be reduced to three principal components: the layout design factor, the color design factor, and the information design factor. These factors have positive relationships with the degree of visual comfort appreciation. Among them, the layout design factor has the highest correlation coefficient (Beta=0.820); the color design the second (Beta=0.369) and the information design factor the least (Beta=0.167). 2. The result of a five-scaled semantic differential experiment demonstrates that, among 12 representative web page samples, the typical samples, those with highest and least degrees of visual comfort, reflect that (1) the best proportion of graphics to texts is 3:1, which will make it more comfortable for users to browse through the web pages; (2) the addition of a background block to the text will make it look like a graphic object; (3) the change of font will help catch the user’s eyes; (4) when there are more colors, the harmony among colors should be paid attention to; (5) when the tone of the background is too similar to that of the foreground, the main thesis cannot stand out; (6) the visual balance of the total composition lies in the center, which helps gather the user’s focus; (7) the white space amount is best to be 50%; (8) when the color is too similar to the background, the total image tends to be too spacious due to the increase of white space amount.

Abstract:
Information systems literature calls for websites providing a site architecture that is as close as possible to the mental model of the user. To assure that users will be satisfied, website designers need to be aware that users interpret elements offered on a website based on their physiological and psychological factors. Creating a compelling online experience for diverse groups of e-customers is a challenge and of utmost importance for a website's success. However, in the field of tourism literature that discriminates between requirements based on motivational or cognitive aspects of certain user-groups is scarce. Therefore, the hypothesis examined in this dissertation is that there are differences between a priori defined user-groups regarding their satisfaction with web 2.0 websites. Further, this research is aimed at not only taking the demand side into account but also the supply side by asking whether the supply side is aware of the increasing importance of web 2.0 contents and its potentials for information presentation and market research. To bring the project into a coherent framework three more aspects are tackled. First, due to the fact that there is no existing typology for travel-blogs this dissertation tries to fill this gap by means of a qualitative approach. Second, an alternative, more parsimonious measurement approach for website performance is proposed. Finally, a study on measuring emotional mental models, a topic which seems to be neglected in information systems literature as well as in the field of tourism, is included. In order to investigate all these issues nine empirical studies are conducted. The approaches used include online surveys, content analysis, and quasi-experimental design. For data analysis methods such as Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling, Covariance Based Structural Equation Modeling, and Artificial Neural Network Analysis are applied. The results indicate that there are differences between a priori defined user groups regarding their satisfaction with web 2.0 websites. For instance, the influence of motivational factors on the importance of website features differs between travelers who seek relaxation and those who seek adventure. Moreover, the main drivers for value and satisfaction for a goal-directed search are content quality followed by usefulness. These effects are attenuated for the experiential search. The study focusing on communication modes suggests that for verbalizers content is most essential while for visualizers the most important aspect is design. A further study, investigating the influence of hotel guest reviews on customer hotel preferences, reveals that in certain instances the subjects' willingness to pay is significantly higher than their reference price. Additionally, the findings indicate that people who read consumer reviews online do not belong to only one homogeneous group but perceive the importance of review categories differently. Pertaining to the supply side findings show that managers in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland assess user generated content as highly important and that managers have a rather positive attitude towards negative reviews. However, there is evidence that hotels and museums are not seizing opportunities the Internet provides in terms of information presentation. Concerning the formative measurement developed for website performance cross validation proved that the index works well. The last study sheds light on measuring emotional models and gives insights into changes of users' emotional mental models before and after their visitation of a virtual world. The final chapter "Discussion and conclusions" critically discusses the results of the nine studies from a theoretical point of view, debates the approaches used and methods applied, and gives managerial implications and suggestions for future research. With the internet improvement and academic research prevalence, conference is holding more and more frequent. There are two kinds of method for paper submission in the internet, one is sending email with attached paper file and the other one is sending paper to FTP site of organization. For the organization administrator, the former method causes the inconvenience of the administrator and the latter method must spend much money and time to program the multifunction website. In this paper, we developed a Conference Website Generator system with modular design and implementation for conference website. Without writing any program of servo webpage, the organization just selects and fills in the required items from the options and then the website with the functions of online submission, paper reviewing, registration, and administration was established automatically. The entire management system provides not only the functions of reviewing papers, revising author’s information, and managing paper’s file, but also the functions of the database’s backup, the statistic figure’s display, the format’s transform, and the website information’s modification. On the other hand, the administrator could add, delete, and modify the items and the bulletin board of homepage without any code’s modification. In this paper, the results indicated that the conference conduct could accomplish the entire website and the collection publication with the simplest way, the least time and manpower.

This work emerges from a UI/UX and front-end implementation project of a gamified platform built for discovering music through the sharing of musical knowledge amongst work colleagues. Random Jukebox (beta version) is the platform that will be approached, having been presented as an internship and followed by HYP: a web and mobile solutions development company from Coimbra. The redesign challenge presents itself as a problem of how an intervention of this level could be aligned with Gamification principles to create a better experience discovering new music in a socially prone environment. The development of this project contemplates research, an iterative process of prototyping and code implementation to deliver a functional prototype. This platform exists because and for HYP’s team, meaning to represent their team spirit, their will, and passion for games. Therefore, the ultimate goal is to design this web space in their image, making sure that the use isn’t at all tiring but rather fun. Striving to achieve an experience more game-like then it already is, while always putting the user’s needs and preferences first.

Touch screens develop rapidly in recent years, such as smart phones, tablet PCs, electronic touch panels, etc. People interact with digital information being no longer limited to keyboard or mouse. As the rise of the touch screens the application software become popular, such as e-books, Atlas and games. This boom has gradually spread to the desktop computer. People usually use the computers to receive or search information. The trend of miniaturization technology will make people to internet access anytime and anywhere. Touch page is one application for the touch screen. As Microsoft launched windows 7 software, the multi-touch websites were used more widely. People just buy the touch screen devices then can use the touch functions. The general websites are no particular design criteria and standards now, so the interface is not optimal. It is difficult to operate and the parts of our body will fatigue quickly. The purpose of this study is to research how to construct one interface that is easy to use on touch screen for a case of Kaohsiung tourism website. Analyze the layout, vision, tactile, operation of the page to establish the best way to browse websites. Find out the results by testing and questionnaire survey. It would be useful for designers to convert general web page to touch page. Let users operate the page more natural and intuitive in the future. The results show the design rules are feasibility.
The Third Industrial Revolution was a moment in history, beginning in the second half of the twentieth century, when electronic technology advanced at an extraordinary rate, transforming many areas of human activity. Graphic design was irrevocably changed by this event. (Meggs, 2012) Companies started looking for different solutions for the dissemination of their brands and it was necessary to create visual identities that would adapt to new media, namely screens. This thesis focuses on the creation of a new visual identity for the company Tapestry Software and subsequent design and implementation of a new website, in order to make it more appealing and pleasant, since currently some of the existing information is not up to date and there is still a lack of a portfolio where it can show the work developed so far in the different areas of activity. In this sense, a research was made on visual identities, in particular dynamic visual identities, since this was one of the main requirements for a new identity. Different Content Management Systems were also investigated, in order to understand the best platform to use when creating the website. The website was developed using the WordPress platform. The steps of the creation process are shown, including the first experiences related to the identity, the final identity development process, initial and final website mockups that mirror the changes made and finally the prototype implemented in its desktop version and in its mobile version.
