Santoni, Ronald E. "Bad Faith and Character in Jonathan Webber’s Sartre." Sartre Studies International 26, no. 1 (June 1, 2020): 38–60. http://dx.doi.org/10.3167/ssi.2020.260105.

Abstract:
I have two aims: to analyze Jonathan Webber’s analysis of bad faith and compare it to my own, traditional, account and to show that Webber’s focus on character, as a set of dispositions or character traits that incline but do not determine us to view the world and behave in certain ways, contributes further to understanding Sartre’s ‘bad faith’. Most Sartre scholars have ignored any emphasis on ‘character’. What is distinctive and emphatic in Webber’s interpretation is his insistence ‘on bad faith’ as a ‘social disease’ distorting the way one views, interprets, and even thinks about the world. (Matt Eshleman also moves in this direction). But, again, this pattern is not deterministic. Early in his work, Webber tells us that Sartre does not claim that we have bad faith by ‘ascribing character traits where there are none but by pretending to ourselves that we have ‘fixed natures’ that e.g. preclude the behaviour or character trait of which one is being accused.Though hardly disagreeing radically with Webber (or he with me) I do offer critical considerations. While Webber focuses on character, I focus on Sartre’s contention that the ‘most basic’ or ‘first act’ of bad faith is ‘to flee from what [the human being] cannot flee, from what it is’, specifically human freedom. And I disagree partially with Webber’s articulation of the ‘spirit of seriousness’, and strongly with both Sartre’s and his supporting claim that bad faith cannot be cynical. I also demur from Webber’s overemphasis on the ‘social’. For me, the root of all bad faith is our primitive ontological condition; namely, that at its very ‘upsurge’, human reality, anguished by its ‘reflective apprehension’ of its freedom and lack of Being, is disposed to flee from its nothingness in pursuit of identity, substantiality - in short, Being.

Shah, Raj. "‘Perhaps we may frighten away the ghost of so many years ago’: Gaston Leroux’s haunting of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera." Studies in Musical Theatre 14, no. 3 (December 1, 2020): 255–72. http://dx.doi.org/10.1386/smt_00040_1.

Full text
Abstract:
This article investigates the ambivalent relationship between Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1986 megamusical The Phantom of the Opera and its 1910 source novel, Gaston Leroux’s Le Fantôme de l’Opéra. Lloyd Webber and his collaborators initially differentiated the megamusical from previous adaptations by heralding a return to the spirit of Leroux’s narrative. In doing so, however, Lloyd Webber lay down the limitations of his own creative authority over the material by establishing a ‘knowing audience’ primed to experience both the ‘hypotext’ of the novel and the ‘hypertext’ of the musical through the prism of the other. This article demonstrates how Leroux’s novel was subsequently marginalized via a strategic project of displacement in the megamusical’s ‘paratexts’, such as programme notes and media interviews. Examining these paratexts and Lloyd Webber’s later reworkings of the material (as seen in its 2004 film adaptation and its 2010 sequel), this article argues that the composer-producer’s attempts to appropriate the ‘phantom’ legend have been repeatedly disrupted by the novel’s spectral resurgences in the public imagination.

Abstract:
Mango Leaf Webber (Orthaga euadrusalis Walker, 1858) is a phytophagous insect feeding on mango leaves by scraping the leaf surface leaving behind midribs and habitat inside the webbed leaf bunch, which is one of the major pests of mango in south Asian nations including Nepal. The infestation of the pest has the potential to cause production loss of 25-100% if not managed. Thus, the management of the pest is crucial to protect mango production and collateral economics. For management, the web nest can be scraped off and burnt along with pupa and larva. Integrated management practices include biological methods using predators like Brachymeria lasus, Hormius, Hormiusa, Pediobius bruchicida, Oecama sp., etc. pathogens like Serratia marcescens and Beauveria bassiana, etc., pruning and removal of old and infested branches and planting resistant variety like Amrapali, the legal method by regulating mobility of plant parts as well as the chemical method by using chemical pesticides like Quinalphos, Cypermethrin, Chlorpyriphos, Acephate and botanical pesticides like Nimbicidine, Nemactine, etc. for management of the pest. The management methods given in this paper would be a valuable resource for mango growers, researchers, and consumers in managing the mango leaf Webber problem.

Abstract:
New evidence builds upon the Student Engagement IndexTM and Teacher Engagement IndexTM research (Scott-Webber, Konyndyk, & French, 2019; Scott-Webber, Konyndyk, French, & French, 2018; Scott-Webber, Konyndyk, French, Lembke, & Kinney, 2017) determining post-occupancy answers to, “Can we demonstrate that the design of the built environment for grades 6–8 impacts student academic engagement levels post-occupancy?” The early studies used respondents from grades 9–12. This one is from users in grades 6–8 (‘alpha’ pilot). All studies were conducted in the USA as convenience samples. Engagement performance is a high predictor of student success across multiple domains and learning/work experiences. Specifically, “Research that shows that engagement, the time and energy students devote to educationally purposeful activities, is the best single predictor of their learning and personal development” (Anonymous, NSSE, 2010, p. 2), and thus our research focus. From both the students and educators perspectives, design of the built space impacts engagement performance (p < .0001).

Díaz Cano, Coral Anaid. "Splitting Selves: Crip Time and the Temporalities of Disability in Georgia Webber’s Dumb: Living Without a Voice." Canada and Beyond: A Journal of Canadian Literary and Cultural Studies 11 (October 21, 2022): 9–30. http://dx.doi.org/10.14201/candb.v11i9-30.

Full text
Abstract:
In the graphic narrative Dumb: Living Without a Voice (2018), Canadian cartoonist Georgia Webber explores her acquired physical disability after a severe vocal injury leaves her voiceless. As a talkative, social young woman working as a café server, Georgia’s life is interrupted when she is forced to adapt herself to a different way of navigating the world. Previous scholarly work has analyzed Dumb to articulate a connection between comics theory and disability rhetoric (Dolmage and Jacobs 2016) and explored its fruitful linkage between voice/voicelessness and identity (Venkatesan and Dastidar 2020). Building on the path opened by these scholars, the aim of this paper is to critically examine the representation of disability and its engagement with the concept of crip time in Dumb by drawing on the interdisciplinary fields of disability studies, crip theory, and comics theory. The first section of this paper will build on Alison Kafer’s formulation of the strange temporalities of disability (2013) to investigate the ways in which Webber constructs non-conventional layouts where she incorporates different formal elements to present Georgia’s lived experience of disability as a disruption of conventional temporalities. Special attention will be paid to the endless, frustrating routine of paperwork to apply for disability welfare that the protagonist faces when her condition renders her unable to work. In the second section, I will draw on the work of Ellen Samuels (2017) to examine how Webber negotiates her shifting identity by graphically splitting her embodied self on the page, composing a parallel timeline where she visualizes her pre-disabled and disabled selves. The power of the pictorial is also extended to Webber’s clever usage of color: while her cartoonish drawings appear in black and white, she employs red to draw Georgia’s inner voice and her pain. Finally, my last section will employ the conception of crip time developed by Petra Kuppers (2014) to explore Georgia’s reconnection with herself through her breathing exercises and her orientation towards artistic creativity. Overall, I will argue that Dumb does not present a narrative of recovery, as Georgia does not heal from her injury but engages instead with her disabled existence by turning inwards and depicting her voice (lessness).

Abstract:
The ‘Knobe effect’ is the name given to the empirical finding that judgments about whether an action is intentional or not seems to depend on the moral valence of this action. To account for this phenomenon, Scaife and Webber have recently advanced the ‘Consideration Hypothesis’, according to which people’s ascriptions of intentionality are driven by whether they think the agent took the outcome in consideration when taking his decision. In this paper, I examine Scaife and Webber’s hypothesis and conclude that it is supported neither by the existing literature nor by their own experiments, whose results I did not replicate, and that the ‘Consideration Hypothesis’ is not the best available account of the ‘Knobe Effect’.

Abstract:
Tara Duncan, 1994, was established as a terrestrial genus of New Zealand talitrid amphipods, with the type species Orchestia sylvicola Dana, 1852. It was recently discovered to be a junior homonym of Tara Peckham & Peckham, 1886, a genus of salticid spiders (Araneae, Salticidae, Amycinae, Astiini). Tara Peckham & Peckham, 1886, is a valid name in current use for a small endemic genus of Australian jumping spiders recently revised by Zabka (1987). Tara Duncan, 1994, appears in the literature at least three times: in the original description of the genus (Duncan 1994), in identification keys to the terrestrial amphipods of New Zealand (Fenwick & Webber 2008), and in the recent inventory of New Zealand biodiversity (Webber et al. 2010). The new name, Dana, is proposed to replace Tara Duncan, 1994.

Abstract:
AbstractMore than 40 years after Rittel and Webber published the first articles on the theory of wicked problems this theory has been applied to a wide range of fields involved in real-world problem solving. Interest in the theory seems greater than ever. This has led to an interest in rethinking the theory. A number of authors do this by imposing interpretations on the theory that are incompatible with each other and with the statements of the theory's authors. We agree that it is time to critically reexamine the theory and rethink what implications it has for design. However, rather than imposing an incompatible interpretation, our approach is see what new conclusions can be drawn from a systematic and critical examination of what Rittel and Webber actually said. This reexamination of their specific claims and arguments is what we calluntangling wicked problems. From this untangling, we derive new conclusions about how designers should tackle wicked problems and how design rationale can aid them in doing so.

Abstract:
The 197 entries including two checks (SI-250 Resistance check and TC-25 Susceptible check) of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) representing varied geographic and genetic diversity were tested at three diverse climatic locations of India viz., Jabalpur, Mandor and Vriddhachalam, against leaf webber and capsule. None of the screened entry was found to be free from infestation by leaf webber and capsule borer. The average plant, flower and capsule damage over the locations varied from 6.58 to 27.17, 7.80 to 23.71 and 3.33 to 15.43%, respectively. At vegetative stage, the entries SI-0018-B (6.33%) and IS-353-A (6.58%) at flowering, the entry KMR-7 (7.80%) and at capsule stage, the entries SI-0018-B (3.33%), MT-67-25 (3.65%) and RJS- 56-A (3.80%) were recorded the lowest damage. Further, the response of promising entries under artificial pest load conditions over the locations showed that the entry SI-271-B was superior to others with respect to lowest plant and flower damage while at capsule stage, the entry NIC-8510-B was superior. Under artificial pest load condition, the entries SI-271-B, NIC-9839 and MT-67-25 showed the lowest damage whereas under natural condition, the entries IS-178-C and SP-3267 were superior to others with respect to lowest damage. The feeding preference studies showed that the entries SI-271-B, IS-178-C, MT-67-25 and S-OO-17-B were least preferred by the leaf webber and capsule borer and recorded the lowest leaf area damage. Abstract:
Because of fundamental changes in the competitive environment, the amount of resources and knowledge needed in research and development (R&D) activities has become overwhelming for a single organisation. Moreover, new technologies create lucrative new possibilities for new service development, which are out of reach for a single organisation. Thus, there is a strong need to perform R&D activities in networks. This study increases the understanding of R&D networks by presenting an empirically grounded process model of the formation of such networks. The model has three main elements: the initial conditions, the role of network webber and the sub-processes through which the formation progresses. The process model highlights the importance of the network webber both in triggering the formation process and in managing the process. Moreover, the model suggests a view of the process that is overlapping and iterative, i.e., the sub-processes of enabling the network, acquiring actors, assuring continuity, formal structuring, learning and developing commitment do not follow each other in a certain order.

In the wake of the legal challenge to Quebec’s law on state secularism,1 Professor Grégoire Webber, lawyer Éric Mendelsohn, and Dean Robert Leckey jointly published a post. In that post, they argue that the invocation of the "notwithstanding clause" in section 33 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms does not preclude a court from making a declaration of "consistency." By such a declaration, a Court would declare the mere "inconsistency," not the invalidity or inoperability, of legislative provisions for which section 33 had been invoked with the constitutional rights from which they validly derogate.2 Their arguments ought to be reviewed and assessed, as they constitute creative but ultimately erroneous development in legal thought on section 33 in Canadian law. 1 Act Respecting the Laicity of the State, CQLR c L-0.3.2 Grégoire Webber, Eric Mendelsohn & Robert Leckey, “The faulty received wisdom around the notwithstanding clause” Policy Options Politiques (10 May 2019) online: <irpp.org/magazines/ may-2019/faulty-wisdom-notwithstanding-clause/>.
