Abstract:
Four features make states potentially different to other litigants. First, states are still the principal player in international law—they are the parties to treaties, members of international organizations, and the makers and breakers of customary international law. They also establish courts, decide on budgets, and elect the judges. Second, states enjoy immunity from jurisdiction and from enforcement measures—courts are obliged to consider such immunity in limine litis and on their own initiative. Third, states, whether they are democracies or dictatorships, are political entities. Fourth, sovereignty is associated with notions of honor, dignity, and comity.

Abstract:
I’ve built an Internet based administration front-end for the company Allt I Brand in Jamjö. Allt I Brand’s main goals are maintenance and sale of fire preventive equipment. This front-end is programmed mostly in PHP, connected to a MySQL database. Because both Allt I Brand’s main page and my administration front-end use the same database and the database is designed to virtually fit any type of company, the result is both dynamic and powerful. The front-end design is made to make it easy to understand and nice to look at. The functionality has given my client the power to manage their main page on their own. The result, a complete administration system.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Web 2.0 represents the next generation of creating interactive applications on the Web. The purpose of this thesis was to develop a service tailored to Web 2.0 technology, where users can post ads for free. The platform is an advertising system specially designed for animals. Surveys and interviews have been done; the result is that today’s advertising services on the Internet are not interactive and user-friendly.

The users have the possibility to adapt different part of the system to their needs, such as choice of themes. Moreover, the system is prepared to support different languages.

The paper compares the different server-side languages, databases, and various AJAX-technologies that can be applied in the Web application.

The developed prototype is functional, but incomplete. It can be found on the Web at www.djurplatsen.se. The buying section is not yet in, and language support is not applied to all pages.

A survey has been done showing that the result of the developed advertiser system indicates that it is interactive and user-friendly comparing to today’s advertising services.

On the server side, PHP has been used as the programming language and MySQL as the database.

The system is tailored to the most popular browsers available on the market so that the system always looks the same regardless of which browser is used.

The essay concludes with a discussion of the problems encountered during the work especially problems that cropped up with the different browsers.

Different types of ideas are also mentioned which can be applied in the continued development of the prototype.

Kirk, Sheila. "Philip Webb (1831-1915) : domestic architecture." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/291.

Full text
Abstract:
The influence of the architect Philip Webb (1831-1915) on Arts and Crafts houses, or the so-called English Domestic revival, has been, generally acknowledged for many years, yet this dissertation is the first full-scale scholarly study-of his philosophy, and contains the first comprehensive, presentation of his work in his chosen field of domestic architecture. Webb's life, thought, and work were bound into a complete unity by his devotion to architecture, his love for the English landscape and its old buildings, and his views on art and society. For convenience and clarity, however, the thesis is divided into three main parts, the first of which is concerned with his life, including his involvement with William Morris in, the firm commonly known as Morris and Company, with the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, and with socialism. The second part is an investigation of Webb's architectural philosophy and its evolution, based on his own comments in letters and supported by evidence from his buildings, and of the clients who accepted it and of his relationships with them, and, with his assistants and contractors. The third part is devoted to the history, description, and analysis of Webb's houses and major enlargements, illustrated by 230 plates including plans of most of the buildings discussed. The dissertation demonstrates that Webb made an early and important contribution towards" preservation of "the architectural heritage, including' houses of all sizes, in''Britain and elsewhere; that he was one of the most original and influential architectural thinkers of the nineteenth century; and that he evolved a challenging philosophy which escaped from prevailing revivalism to produce, in his own hands and those of his followers, vigorous, inventive, and pleasing houses of national and local character.

Echium hypertropicum Webb and Echium stenosiphon Webb subsp. stenosiphon are endemic capeverdian shrubs used in folk medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases and cough, respectively. The two species had their alkaloidal fractions obtained by acid-base extraction. GC-MS and ESI-MS/MS analysis indicated the presence of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) and purified substances were also analyzed by 1D and 2D NMR experiments. A total of 10 alkaloids were isolated and identified, which 8 were identified by comparing their molecular masses and mass fragmentation patterns with NIST database and literature data for the genus. The hepatotoxic diesters echimidine and 7-(2-methylbutyryl)-9-echimidinylretronecine were identified in both species. The alkaloids 7-senecioylretronecine, 9-angeloylretronecine, lycopsamine, 7-acetil-lycopsamine and echihumiline were identified in the leaves of E. hypertropicum, whereas the 7-(2-methylbutyryl)-9-equimidinylretronecine N-oxide was identified in the leaves of E. Stenosipnhon. Echimidine was the major component in the diethyl ether fraction from leaves of E. hypertropicum, whereas the 7-(2-methylbutyryl)-9-echimidinylretronecine was the major component in dichloromethane fraction from leaves of E. stenosiphon. The alkaloid 7-(2-methylbutyryl)-9-echimidinylretronecine N-oxide was identified for the first time in Echium genus. In addition, 22 essential oil components were identified in E. hypertropicum flowers, with trans-phytol (30.64%), n-pentacosane (8.28%) and n-tricosane (6.73%) as the major components. The triterpene friedelin was also isolated from E. hypertropicum leaves. The antimicrobial susceptibility tested with the ethanolic extract and the alkaloid 7-(2-methylbutyryl)-9-equimidinilretronecine against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213 showed a MIC of 250.0 μg/mL and 25.0 μg/mL, respectively. The anticholinesterasic activity was evaluated and echimidine was able to inhibit the enzyme at the concentrations tested with p value = 0.0011. The alkaloid 7-(2-methylbutyryl)-9-equimidinilretronecine retarded the growth of phytophagous Dysdercus peruvianus at the concentration of 1mg/mL. For the antiviral activity, the ethanolic extracts from E. hypertropicum and E. stenosiphon (3.9 μg/mL) were analyzed against HSV. The ethanolic extract of E. hypertropicum showed an inhibition percentage (IP) of 27.5% against HSV-1S and 43.8% against HSV-2S. Also showed high cytotoxicity for the Vero cells, used as host for the herpesvirus (CC50 140.10 μg/mL and 96.86 μg/mL). The chemical composition and biological activities of the leaves and flowers of E. hypertropicum and E. stenosiphon subsp. stenosiphon are reported for the first time. The identified pyrrolizidine alkaloids could be used in future as chemotaxonomic markers for Echium genus

Megersa, Kelbesa. Strengths and Weaknesses of Different Funding Types for CSOs. Institute of Development Studies, May 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2022.117.

Abstract:
Donors and civil society organisations (CSOs) have a shared interest in having an effective way of funding CSO projects or programmes – as well as an efficient and transparent process for awarding grants. CSOs that are looking for development financing generally prefer less bureaucracy from donors, simpler rules, and a shorter wait between the date they apply for funding and when they actually obtain their contract and payment. Many CSOs also often emphasise the importance of fair, transparent procedures providing opportunities to a wide variety of CSOs via a suitable mix of funding modalities (Webb et al., 2020; CONCORDE, 2020; FCDO, 2022; Wieners, 2022; Verbrugge and Huyse, 2018).

Abstract:
The accelerating Arctic cryosphere decline severely impacts the land on which northern communities live through the presence of coastal and marine geohazards and coastal erosion, which further places the cultural heritage of coastal archaeological sites at risks. Sea ice decline also compromises the formation of polynyas, with unknown consequences for the regional ecosystems. From the 10th to the 18th of July 2022, a scientific cruise onboard the research vessel William-Kennedy allowed the collection of a suite of samples and data from the marine coastal environment of Nain, Nunatsiavut. In total, 42 surface sediment samples, 29 sediment cores, 41 conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) profiles, 13 water samples, 24 phytoplankton nets and 13 zooplankton nets were collected. The cruise allowed the deployment of 2 moorings equipped with sediment traps in Nain Bay and within deeper offshore waters. Triangulation showed that the 2 moorings were correctly placed near their target locations. Drop camera transects were deployed in Webb Bay and at the easternmost tip of Paulmp;gt;'s Island to image the seabed and study benthic habitats. Finally, acoustic sub-bottom profiling along the entire study area allowed a high-resolution characterization of the stratigraphy of the seafloor, helped identifying locations for sediment sampling and inferring geological information about the depositional environments. The material and data collected during the research cruise will be key to 1) evaluating the productivity and dynamics of small recurring polynyas (i.e., rattles) on diverse timescales, 2) assessing marine and coastal geohazards (e.g., landslides) in relation to the deglacial history of Nain, 3) investigate the seabed geomorphology in Webb Bay and linkages with permafrost and sea-level changes and 3) conducting benthic habitat characterization. Co-led by the University of New Brunswick (UNB) and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), this cruise was done in collaboration with the Government of Nunatsiavut, Université du Québec à Montréal, Université Laval, Dalhousie University and Memorial University, and was funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and NRCan.
