Abstract:
The adhesion of wet fibers is usually explained by the presence of capillary forces, which keep the swollen fibers together. These bonds are due to the free water present outside the wall of the swollen fibers. However, what happens when the free water is being removed and the tensile strength of the wet web continues to increase is not well understood. Tensile strength's measurements of refined fibers in presence of polyelectrolytes and mineral particles suggest that no enhancement of bonding occurs between the fibers when the free water is gone. The addition of microfibrils tends to enhance the wet web strength. This indicates strongly that fiber entanglement due to mechanical interactions may be the major interaction responsible for keeping the swollen fibers together in the transient region where neither capillary forces nor hydrogen bonding dominate.
The interactions between fibers, precipitated calcium carbonated (PCC) and retention aids, revealed that the wet web strength of PCC-filled handsheets is detrimental in the presence of flocculated PCC particles, while no detrimental effect is observed in the presence of stable PCC particles. Friction generated by the deposition of small and/or single particles on the fiber surface can explain their enhancement of strength, whereas bigger particles may prevent the entanglement of fibers. Finally, the addition of polyelectrolytes to swollen fibers reduces the wet web strength. The presence of an additional polymer layer results in an increased electrosteric repulsion between fibers, which decreases the friction between fibers. This reduction of friction makes the fibers slide more easily over each other, resulting in poor wet web strength.

Abstract:
The World Wide Web has had a significant impact on basic operational economical components in global information rich civilizations. This impact is forcing organizations to provide justification for security from a business case perspective and to focus on security from a web application development environment perspective. This increased focus on security was the basis of a business case discussion and led to the acquisition of empirical evidence gathered from a high level Web survey and more detailed industry surveys to analyse security in the Web application development environment. Along with this information, a collection of evidence from relevant literature was also gathered. Individual aspects of the data gathered in the previously mentioned activities contributed to the proposal of the Essential Elements (EE) and the Security Criteria for Web Application Development (SCWAD). The Essential Elements present the idea that there are essential, basic organizational elements that need to be identified, defined and addressed before examining security aspects of a Web Engineering Development process. The Security Criteria for Web Application Development identifies criteria that need to be addressed by a secure Web Engineering process. Both the EE and SCWAD are presented in detail along with relevant justification of these two elements to Web Engineering. SCWAD is utilized as a framework to evaluate the security of a representative selection of recognized software engineering processes used in Web Engineering application development. The software engineering processes appraised by SCWAD include: the Waterfall Model, the Unified Software Development Process (USD), Dynamic Systems Development Method (DSDM) and eXtreme Programming (XP). SCWAD is also used to assess existing security methodologies which are comprised of the Orion Strategy; Survivable / Viable IS approaches; Comprehensive Lightweight Application Security Process (CLASP) and Microsoft’s Trust Worthy Computing Security Development Lifecycle. The synthesis of information provided by both the EE and SCWAD were used to develop the Web Engineering Security (WES) methodology. WES is a proactive, flexible, process neutral security methodology with customizable components that is based on empirical evidence and used to explicitly integrate security throughout an organization’s chosen application development process. In order to evaluate the practical application of the EE, SCWAD and the WES methodology, two case studies were conducted during the course of this research. The first case study describes the application of both the EE and SCWAD to the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery’s Online Photo Library (HOPL) Internet application project. The second case study presents the commercial implementation of the WES methodology within a Global Fortune 500 financial service sector organization. The assessment of the WES methodology within the organization consisted of an initial survey establishing current security practices, a follow-up survey after changes were implemented and an overall analysis of the security conditions assigned to projects throughout the life of the case study.

Abstract: The amount of scientific data, services and on-line tools available on the Web offer an unprecedented opportunity to conceive new kinds of laboratories blending resources. Existing experimental and collected data can substantiate asynchronous laboratories. Combined with mashup enabled software, it is possible to produce hybrid laboratories to confront, for example, synthetic simulations with observations. This work addresses this opportunity in the Education context through our metalaboratory, an authoring environment to produce laboratories by combining building blocks encapsulated in components. We introduce here the lab composition patterns and the active Web templates as fundamental mechanisms to support a lab authoring task. These laboratories can be embedded and mashed-up in Web documents. This work shows practical experiments of producing Web virtual and hybrid laboratories

Gomes, Daniel. "Web Modelling for Web Warehouse Design." Doctoral thesis, Department of Informatics, University of Lisbon, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10451/14294.

Full text
Abstract:
Users require applications to help them obtaining knowledge from the web. However, the specific characteristics of web data make it difficult to create these applications. One possible solution to facilitate this task is to extract information from the web, transform and load it to a Web Warehouse, which provides uniform access methods for automatic processing of the data. Web Warehousing is conceptually similar to Data Warehousing approaches used to integrate relational information from databases. However, the structure of the web is very dynamic and cannot be controlled by the Warehouse designers. Web models frequently do not reflect the current state of the web. Thus, Web Warehouses must be redesigned at a late stage of development. These changes have high costs and may jeopardize entire projects. This thesis addresses the problem of modelling the web and its influence in the design of Web Warehouses. A model of a web portion was derived and based on it, a Web Warehouse prototype was designed. The prototype was validated in several real-usage scenarios. The obtained results show that web modelling is a fundamental step of the web data integration process

Oosthuizen, Craig Peter. "Web usage mining of organisational web sites." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/399.

Full text
Abstract:
Web Usage Mining (WUM) can be used to determine whether the information architecture of a web site is structured correctly. Existing WUM tools however, do not indicate which web usage mining algorithms are used or provide effective graphical visualisations of the results obtained. WUM techniques can be used to determine typical navigation patterns of the users of organisational web sites. An organisational web site can be described as a site which has a high level of content. The Computer Science & Information Systems (CS&IS) web site at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) is an example of such a web site. The process of combining WUM and information visualisation techniques in order to discover useful information about web usage patterns is called visual web mining. The goal of this research is to discuss the development of a WUM model and a prototype, called WebPatterns, which allows the user to effectively visualise web usage patterns of an organisational web site. This will facilitate determining whether the information architecture of the CS&IS web site is structured correctly. The WUM algorithms used in WebPatterns are association rule mining and sequence analysis. The purpose of association rule mining is to discover relationships between different web pages within a web site. Sequence analysis is used to determine the longest time ordered paths that satisfy a user specified minimum frequency. A radial tree layout is used in WebPatterns to visualise the static structure of the organisational web site. The structure of the web site is laid out radially, with the home page in the middle and other pages positioned in circles at various levels around it. Colour and other visual cues are used to show the results of the WUM algorithms. User testing was used to determine the effectiveness and usefulness of WebPatterns for visualising web usage patterns. The results of the user testing clearly show that the participants were highly satisfied with the visual design and information provided by WebPatterns. All the participants also indicated that they would like to use WebPatterns in the future. Analysis of the web usage patterns presented by WebPatterns was used to determine that the information architecture of the CS&IS web site can be restructured to better facilitate information retrieval. Changes to the CS&IS web site web were suggested, included placing embedded hyperlinks on the home page to the frequently accessed sections of the web site.

Medjahed, Brahim. "Semantic Web Enabled Composition of Web Services." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27364.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation, we present a novel approach for the automatic composition of Web services on the envisioned Semantic Web. Automatic service composition requires dealing with three major research thrusts: semantic description of Web services, composability of participant services, and generation of composite service descriptions. This dissertation deals with the aforementioned research issues. We first propose an ontology-based framework for organizing and describing semantic Web services. We introduce the concept of community to cluster Web services based on their domain of interest. Each community is defined as an instance of an ontology called community ontology. We then propose a composability model to check whether semantic Web services can be combined together, hence avoiding unexpected failures at run time. The model defines formal safeguards for meaningful composition through the use of composability rules. We also introduce the notions of composability degree and tau-composability to cater for partial and total composability. Based on the composability model, we propose a set of algorithms that automatically generate detailed descriptions of composite services from high-level specifications of composition requests. We introduce a Quality of Composition (QoC) model to assess the quality of the generated composite services. The techniques presented in this dissertation are implemented in WebDG, a prototype for accessing e-government Web services. Finally, we conduct an extensive performance study (analytical and experimental) of the proposed composition algorithms.

Abstract:
Digital divisions are getting smaller in Sweden which makes the range of users wider than ever before. This results in higher expectations and requirements on web in order to be sufficient for everyone. This study investigates how web agencies work with web accessibility, why some do not work with it and solutions making daily operations more efficient. This is a qualitative study with an inductive approach, where semi-structured interviews were used to gather empirical data. Six web agencies in Jönköping took part of the study through interviews. In order to analyse the empirical data we used thematic analysis. No unknown methods or techniques were discovered along the study. There were surprisingly few agencies that worked with accessibility at all of those who took part in the study. Some of them more than others, but overall it was low prioritized. Lack of knowledge within the subject became the main reason for not develop for accessibility. An immature and non-standardized industry might be the explanation behind that. Not surprisingly, resources in form of economy is also a reason. It turns out to be hard for agencies to motivate customers to pay for accessibility. However, the motivation process with customers is rarely supported by enough knowledge and leads therefore to insufficient arguments, which does not motivate customers enough to pay for it. Further on, include web accessibility as a given part of CSR plans on both agencies side, but also motivating it for customers. The importance of a mature dialog about it is crucial for survival of accessibility. All parties of a development process should take their responsibility. Everyone can and should participate in the journey towards a more equal society.

Abstract:
This thesis builds upon the work on the Social Semantic Web, a research perspective on the complementarity and coevolution of two aspects of the Web, the social and semantic one. Web development in recent years has given rise to a huge graph of semantically structured data, partly resulting from user activity. We are particularly interested in the use of this graph in order to facilitate access to information found on the Web, in a useful, informative manner. This problem is particularly studied in scenarios related to innovation on the Web - practices to use Web technologies to contribute to the emergence of innovation. A notable specificity of this context, so far little discussed in literature, is the need to encourage serendipity and discovery. Beyond the simple relevance sought in any search and recommendation situation on the Web, the context of innovation requires a certain openness to allow the user to access information relevant yet unexpected, and should also open opportunities to learn and translate ideas from one domain to another. The work presented in this thesis therefore aims to assist, directly or indirectly, the innovators online (eg, companies seeking to innovate, experts and carriers of ideas) to make discoveries. We address each of these challenges in different parts of the thesis. This vision is principally implemented through the construction of an expert search system, Hy.SemEx, a system for keyword recommendation allowing to discover unknown relevant keywords, HyProximity, and an approach for recommending collaborators to experts in order to help them face multidisciplinary problems

Abstract:
Roaming the Internet, users sometimes encounter severe problems or feel dissatisfied using a particular site. E-government websites are the public gateways to access information and services but there is still no agreement on how to assess a government's online presence. Failure of e-government projects in achieving their goals is common and there is uncertainty about how best to evaluate an e-government website. It has been argued that existing evaluation frameworks have some methodological limitations and they mostly neglected citizens. There is a lack of an engineering approach for building web systems and the literature on measuring the quality of website is limited. There is an uncertainty in the selection of evaluation methods and some risks of standardizing inadequate evaluation practices. Managing the complexity of web applications, Web Engineering is emerging as a new discipline for the development and evaluation of web systems to promote high-quality websites. But web quality is still a debatable issue and web metrics is considered a valuable area of ongoing research. Therefore this research focuses on the methodological issues underlying web metrics and how to develop an applicable set of measurement for designing websites. The main aim is to create new metrics for web engineering and develop a generalizable measurement framework for local e-government since research in this field is limited. This study adopted a positivist quantitative research and used triangulation web evaluation methods (heuristic evaluation, user testing, automatic link checkers, and Alexa) to test multiple-case study of Saudi city websites. The proposed E-City Usability Framework is unique in integrating 3-dimension measures (website usability, e-services, and the number and type of e-services), and in using multi-orientations to cover several aspects of e-government: output (information and services), outcomes (citizen-centricity indicators), model, and model-based assessments. Existing e-government models were criticized, and the findings employed in developing the proposed framework. The best web evaluation methods were heuristic evaluation and user testing, while link checkers and Alexa proved to be unreliable tools; nevertheless, they can be used as a useful complementary approach. Saudi city websites were ranked by website quality, e-services, and overall evaluation. Common usability problems in these websites were found to be: the sites were not citizen-centered, limited e-services and information, no e-transaction, no emergency alerts, no municipal budget, and no city council reports. They also suffered from broken links, an inactive city map, a poor eComplaint section, and a nonfunctioning search facility.

Due to the development of Information and Communication Technologies, Information Science has been forced to rethink the traditional posture of information management. Hypertext, arising mainly through the Web environment, further increased the complexity of the information handling. The popularization of the Internet has led the Web to a more interactive and a more collaborative environment, bringing wiki systems, for example, to manage information in a collaborative way. Conceived by Tim Berners-Lee, there is the Semantic Web initiative in which machines are able to analyze data on the network. In this context, semantic wikis arise: wikis characterized by the use of Semantic Web technologies. Therefore, we believe that Information Science, which cares about the development of the Web and the Semantic Web, should also care about semantic wikis. Thus, by a descriptive and an exploratory research, the objective is to explore, to present and to describe the characteristics of the semantic wikis on the activities of representation, retrieval and exchange of information supported by Semantic Web technologies in order to facilitate the understanding, the discussion, and the use of these technologies in digital information environments. After a presentation about the origins of the Semantic Web, we highlight the data representation, encoding, description, relation, and query standards (URI, XML, RDF, RDFS, OWL and SPARQL) which, with other technologies, form the basis of the Semantic Web and support the functioning of semantic wikis. Semantic wikis are presented and defined as wiki systems that use Semantic Web technologies in order to incorporate formalized knowledge, content, structure and links on their pages. After that, we describe the main activities for information description, retrieval and interchange on Semantic MediaWiki, the most popular and most used semantic wiki engine so far. As conclusion, we consider that semantic wikis can promote understanding, discussions, and use of Semantic Web technologies in digital information environments.

Abstract: Due to the development of Information and Communication Technologies, Information Science has been forced to rethink the traditional posture of information management. As conclusion, we consider that semantic wikis can...

Abstract:

The objective of this thesis was to explore the topic of scalable web development, and it answered the question, “How do you scale a website to handle more traffic at peak times without wasting resources?” This is important research to any web company that has issues with rising costs as demand for their website increases. It would be wise for every online business to be prepared for more web traffic, before it occurs, without spending the budget of a multi-million user web company in low traffic periods. The last thing you want is an error as your customer base starts to arrive, giving them a bad experience for their first impressions, which would result in lost revenue.

Scalable software development architectures, including microservices, big data, and Kubernetes were studied, in addition to similar web service companies including Facebook, Twitter, and Match.com. A scalable architecture was designed for a social media web service, MeAndYou, using the big data configuration with a shared Aurora database, which was configured using an auto-scaling group attached to a load balancer in Amazon Web Services (AWS). It was tested using a custom threaded Selenium-based Python script that applied simulated user load to the servers. As the load was applied, AWS added more Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances running a virtual disk image of the web server. After the load was removed, the instances were terminated automatically by AWS to save costs.

Countless steps were taken to make the web service bigger and more scalable than it originally was, before testing, including adding more fields to user profiles, adding more search types, and separating the layers of code into different Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) files in the front-end. A version control system was configured on the servers using GitHub and rsync. The systems architecture designed suggests the Match Engine should use a stream processing message queue, which would allow the system to factor searches one at a time as they are created, with horizontal scaling capabilities, rather than grabbing the entire database and storing it in memory. The backend Match Engine was also tested for accuracy using Structured Query Language (SQL) injection, which determined how the match algorithm should be improved in the future.

Abstract:
Advancements in web technology such as the integration of operating platforms, the application of mobile applets and connectivity with databases into an encompassing web environment has promoted the development of complex web-based systems for enterprise computing. In this integration the inherent security flaws and associated problems of these technological advancements are also brought together under this web environment. These flaws, when exploited, could lead to system compromises of various kinds including stealing of security sensitive information, system take-over fabrication of fake electronic documents and illegal alteration to web sites contents. Therefore, the successful, prompt and appropriate responses of these complex web-based systems to security threats and breaches, such as in the cases of document tampering and misrepresentation from illegal users, are imperative in promoting the user's willingness and confidence when interacting with these systems. Accordingly, this has become one of the major concerns in development, management and operation of web-based systems. This thesis also studies the authentication of dynamic web contents through the application of a one-time digital signature. To this effect, relevant concepts and possible approaches have been discussed. Authentication and verification of dynamic contents, efficiently in the web environment, is suggested as a separate research area and as a direction for future work.

Abstract:
The research project "Semantic Web" has the objective to propose a data storage model with parameters derived from the information in the social networks of university using the technology of the same name. If it is true, there are various storage models or ontologies related to social networks, but they lack parameters identified in a social and university context, or just contemplate one context or have parameter. So this model integrates these two previously contexts solving inadequate organization, overload and heterogeneity of information on the web. To perform this project, it is realized an exploratory research, whose aim is to discover and make an overall analysis of the Semantic Web technology and also a Ontology Development 101 methodology for the design of the main objective: the ontology. In addition, contextual parameters that support the design of the storage model in terms of the Semantic Web technology are identified and, then, benchmarking of possible semantic tools that are actually in the market is performed, which both support the model validation. The contribution of this work is the storage model called "Ontology of data from social networks university" which is based on the academic and social contexts. For these ontology, contextual parameters of location, activity, social network, relationships, events, friends, user link, album, page are defined; which then can be used in a deployment of Context Awareness to facilitate communication and information sharing between different entities or identified parameters.

Abstract:

The Internet and the Web are the dominant communication methods nowadays. There is also a trend in using web technology to replace or supplant the more traditional communication methods, for example using the internet to make Voice over IP telephone calls.

This thesis proposes an efficient solution to integrate VoIP/SIP call controlfunctionality into Web containers. It presents the communication convergence of Web technology, VoIP networks, and PSTN circuit switched (CS) networks.

The Web Call Software Development Kit (SDK) is the implementation of thissolution. It consists of three sub-projects: a SIP Call Control Component, a web application, and a Java ME Client Application. Using the SDK it is possible to easily implement SIP call functionality in Java EE web containers and other Java applications.

Abstract:
Context Web engineering is a new research field which utilizes engineering principles to produce quality web applications. Web applications have become more complex with the passage of time and it's quite difficult to analyze the web metrics for the estimation due to a wide range of web applications. Correct estimates for web development effort play a very important role in the success of large-scale web development projects. Objectives In this study I investigated size metrics and cost drivers used by web companies for early web cost estimation. I also aim to get validation through industrial interviews and web quote form. This form is designed based on most frequently occurring metrics after analyzing different companies. Secondly, this research aims to revisit previous work done by Mendes (a senior researcher and contributor in this research area) to validate whether early web cost estimation trends are same or changed? The ultimate goal is to help companies in web cost estimation. Methods First research question is answered by conducting an online survey through 212 web companies and finding their web predictor forms (quote forms). All companies included in the survey used Web forms to give quotes on Web development projects based on gathered size and cost measures. The second research question is answered by finding most occurring size metrics from the results of Survey 1. List of size metrics are validated by two methods: (i) Industrial interviews are conducted with 15 web companies to validate results of the first survey (ii) a quote form is designed using validated results from industrial interviews and quote form sent to web companies around the world to seek data on real Web projects. Data gathered from Web projects are analyzed using CBR tool and results are validated with Industrial interview results along with Survey 1.  Final results are compared with old research to justify answer of third research question whether size metrics have been changed. All research findings are contributed to Tukutuku research benchmark project. Results “Number of pages/features” and “responsive implementation” are top web size metrics for early Web cost estimation. Conclusions. This research investigated metrics which can be used for early Web cost estimation at the early stage of Web application development. This is the stage where the application is not built yet but just requirements are being collected and an expected cost estimation is being evaluated. List of new metrics variable is concluded which can be added in Tukutuku project.

Full text
Abstract:
The World Wide Web is a rich source of information and continues to expand in size and complexity. Mainly because the data on the web is lack of rigid and uniform data models or schemas, how to effectively and efficiently manage web data and retrieve information is becoming a challenge problem. Discovering web page communities, which capture the features of the web and web-based data to find intrinsic relationships among the data, is one of the effective ways to solve this problem. A web page community is a set of web pages that has its own logical and semantic structures. In this work, we concentrate on the web data in web page format and exploit hyperlink information to discover (construct) web page communities. Three main web page communities are studied in this work: the first one is consisted of hub and authority pages, the second one is composed of relevant web pages with respect to a given page (URL), and the last one is the community with hierarchical cluster structures. For analysing hyperlinks, we establish a mathematical framework, especially the matrix-based framework, to model hyperlinks. Within this mathematical framework, hyperlink analysis is placed on a solid mathematic base and the results are reliable. For the web page community that is consisted of hub and authority pages, we focus on eliminating noise pages from the concerned page source to obtain another good quality page source, and in turn improve the quality of web page communities. We propose an innovative noise page elimination algorithm based on the hyperlink matrix model and mathematic operations, especially the singular value decomposition (SVD) of matrix. The proposed algorithm exploits hyperlink information among the web pages, reveals page relationships at a deeper level, and numerically defines thresholds for noise page elimination. The experiment results show the effectiveness and feasibility of the algorithm. This algorithm could also be used solely for web-based data management systems to filter unnecessary web pages and reduce the management cost. In order to construct a web page community that is consisted of relevant pages with respect to a given page (URL), we propose two hyperlink based relevant page finding algorithms. The first algorithm comes from the extended co-citation analysis of web pages. It is intuitive and easy to be implemented. The second one takes advantage of linear algebra theories to reveal deeper relationships among the web pages and identify relevant pages more precisely and effectively. The corresponding page source construction for these two algorithms can prevent the results from being affected by malicious hyperlinks on the web. The experiment results show the feasibility and effectiveness of the algorithms. The research results could be used to enhance web search by caching the relevant pages for certain searched pages. For the purpose of clustering web pages to construct a community with its hierarchical cluster structures, we propose an innovative web page similarity measurement that incorporates hyperlink transitivity and page importance (weight).Based on this similarity measurement, two types of hierarchical web page clustering algorithms are proposed. The first one is the improvement of the conventional K-mean algorithms. It is effective in improving page clustering, but is sensitive to the predefined similarity thresholds for clustering. Another type is the matrix-based hierarchical algorithm. Two algorithms of this type are proposed in this work. One takes cluster-overlapping into consideration, another one does not. The matrix-based algorithms do not require predefined similarity thresholds for clustering, are independent of the order in which the pages are presented, and produce stable clustering results. The matrix-based algorithms exploit intrinsic relationships among web pages within a uniform matrix framework, avoid much influence of human interference in the clustering procedure, and are easy to be implemented for applications. The experiments show the effectiveness of the new similarity measurement and the proposed algorithms in web page clustering improvement. For applying above mathematical algorithms better in practice, we generalize the web page discovering as a special case of information retrieval and present a visualization system prototype, as well as technical details on visualization algorithm design, to support information retrieval based on linear algebra. The visualization algorithms could be smoothly applied to web applications. XML is a new standard for data representation and exchange on the Internet. In order to extend our research to cover this important web data, we propose an object representation model (ORM) for XML data. A set of transformation rules and algorithms are established to transform XML data (DTD and XML documents with DTD or without DTD) into this model. This model capsulizes elements of XML data and data manipulation methods. DTD-Tree is also defined to describe the logical structure of DTD. It also can be used as an application program interface (API) for processing DTD, such as transforming a DTD document into the ORM. With this data model, semantic meanings of the tags (elements) in XML data can be used for further research in XML data management and information retrieval, such as community construction for XML data.

Abstract:
The Web Information System (WIS) is a new type of Web browser capable of retrieving and displaying the physical attributes (retrieval time, age, size) of a digital document. In addition, the WIS can display the status of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) links using an interface that is easy to use and interpret. The WIS also has the ability to dynamically update HTML links, thereby informing the user regarding the status of the information. The first generation of World Web browsers allowed for the retrieval and rendering of HTML documents for reading and printing. These browsers also provided basic management of HTML links, which are used to point to often-used information. Unfortunately, HTML links are static in nature -- other than a locator for information, an HTML link provides no other useful data. Because of the elusive characteristics of electronic information, document availability, document size (page length), and absolute age of the information can only be assessed after retrieval. WIS addresses the shortcomings of the Web by using a different approach to delivering digital information within a Web browser. By attributing the physical parameters of printed documentation such as retrieval time, age, and size to digital information, the WIS makes using online information easier and more productive than the current method.

Abstract:
The fundamentals of software testing and related activities are often elusive in undergraduate curricula. A direct consequence of the lack of software testing efforts during education is the huge losses suffered by the software industry when applications are not sufficiently tested. Software practitioners have exhorted faculty members and institutions to teach more software testing in universities. The purpose of this research is to provide answers to the needs of such practitioners and introduce software-testing activities throughout the curriculum. The most important goal is to introduce software-testing education without requiring a significant amount of extra effort on behalf of faculty members or teaching assistants. The approach taken comprises the development of the Web-based Center for Automated Testing (Web-CAT) and the introduction of test-driven development (TDD) in courses. Web-CAT serves as a learning environment for software testing tasks and helps automatically assess student assignments. A comparison of student programs developed using Web-CAT with historical records indicated a significant decrease in the number of bugs in submitted programs. Undergraduate students also received exposure to the principles of software testing and were able to write test cases that were on an average better than those generated by an automated test case generator designed specifically for the assignment.

The World Wide Web (Web) has evolved from a collection of static pages that need reloading every time the content changes, into dynamic pages where parts of the page updates independently, without reloading it. As such, users are required to work with dynamic pages with components that react to events either from human interaction or machine automation. Often elderly and visually impaired users are the most disadvantaged when dealing with this form of interaction. Operating widgets require the user to have the conceptual design knowledge of the widget to complete the task. Users must have prior experience with the widget or have to learn to operate it independently, because often no user documentation is available. An automated Widget Prediction Framework (WPF) is proposed to address the issues discussed. It is a pre-emptive approach that predicts different types of widget and their locations in the page. Widgets with similar characteristics and functionalities are categorised based on a definition provided by widget design pattern libraries. Some design patterns are more loosely defined than others, and this causes confusion and ambiguity when identifying them. A formal method to model widgets based on a Widget Ontology was developed. The paradigm of the ontology provides a framework for developers to communicate their ideas, while reducing ambiguity between different types of widget. A Widget Prediction System (WPS) was developed using the concepts of the WPF. To select the types of widget for WPS evaluation, a widget popularity investigation was conducted. Seven of the most popular widgets from the investigation, done across fifty Websites, were selected. To demonstrate how WPF can be applied to predict widgets, fifty websites were used to evaluate the feasibility of the approach using WPS. On average, WPS achieved 61.98% prediction accuracy with two of the widgets > 84% accuracy. These results demonstrated the feasibility of the framework as the backend for tools that support elderly or visually impaired users.

Abstract:
The currently emerging trend of building more complex web applications to solve increasingly more involved software problems has led to the the need for a more automated and practical means for deploying resources required by these advanced web applications. As web based applications become more complex and involve more developers, greater system redundancy, and a larger number of components, traditional means of resource deployment become painfully inadequate as they fail to scale sufficiently. The purpose of this research is to provide evidence that a more sound and scalable test and deployment process can be employed and that many of the components of this improved process can be automated and/or delegated to various system actors to provide a more usable, reliable, stable, and efficient deployment process. The deployable resources that have been included for their commonality in web based applications are versioned resources (both ASCII based and binary files), database resources, cron files, and scripting commands. In order to achieve an improved test and deployment process and test its effectiveness, a web-based code deployment tool was developed and deployed in a production environment where its effects could be accurately measured. This deployment tool heavily leverages the use of Subversion to provide the management of versioned resources because of its extensive ability to manage the creation and merging of branches.

Abstract:
In 2015 the term Progressive Web Application was coined to describe applications that are getting the advantage of all Progressive App features. Some of the essential features are offline support, app-like interface, secure connection, etc. Since then, case studies from PWA’s implementation showed optimistic promises for improving web page performance, time spent on site, user engagement, etc. The goal of this report is to analyze some of the effects of PWA. This work will investigate the browser compatibility of PWA’s features, compare and analyze performance and memory consumption effect of PWA’s features compared to Regular WebApp. Results showed a lot of the features of PWA are still not sup-ported by some major browsers. Performance benchmark showed that required https connection for PWA is slowing down all of the PWA’s performance metrics on the first visit. On a repeat visit, some of the PWA features like speed index is outperforming the Regular Web App. Memory consumption on PWA increased more than 2 times the size of RWA. The conclusion is that even if some features are not directly supported by browsers, they still might have workaround solutions. PWA is slower than regular web app if https on your web server is not optimized. Different browsers have different memory limitations for PWA caches. You should implement https and PWA features only if you have HTTP/2 support on your web server, otherwise, performance can decrease.

Abstract:
Main purpose of this thesis based on analysis, searching and synthesis of accessible sources is to describe web copywriter's role concerning content, to position copywriting into web life-cycle and to prove efficiency of copywriting by its application on specific web site. Thesis' contribution, except from outlining important -- but still unappreciated -- web copywriter's role, is to integrate web copywriting into separate phases of web development life-cycle. Practical part of thesis is beneficial as an illustrative sample of application web copywriting's principles onto existing web site. Thesis is divided into four chapters (except introduction and conclusion). In first chapter, Internet culture and its specialities concerning web copywriting are described, followed by detailed specification of principles and characteristics of web copy in terms of its structure and content construction. The second chapter is dedicated to binding web copywriting to rapidly growing marketing tool called search engine optimalization. The chapter also includes description of content and qualification aspect of SEO copywriter's role. The third chapter explains integration of web copywriting activities into web life-cycle's process model. The last chapter demonstrates on application of web copywriting onto running web site on practical example. Keywords: web copywriting, web life-cycle, SEO, web copywriter, web content
