McElhiney, Patrick R. "Scalable Web Service Development with Amazon Web Services." Thesis, University of New Hampshire, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10931435.

Abstract:

The objective of this thesis was to explore the topic of scalable web development, and it answered the question, “How do you scale a website to handle more traffic at peak times without wasting resources?” This is important research to any web company that has issues with rising costs as demand for their website increases. It would be wise for every online business to be prepared for more web traffic, before it occurs, without spending the budget of a multi-million user web company in low traffic periods. The last thing you want is an error as your customer base starts to arrive, giving them a bad experience for their first impressions, which would result in lost revenue.

Scalable software development architectures, including microservices, big data, and Kubernetes were studied, in addition to similar web service companies including Facebook, Twitter, and Match.com. A scalable architecture was designed for a social media web service, MeAndYou, using the big data configuration with a shared Aurora database, which was configured using an auto-scaling group attached to a load balancer in Amazon Web Services (AWS). It was tested using a custom threaded Selenium-based Python script that applied simulated user load to the servers. As the load was applied, AWS added more Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances running a virtual disk image of the web server. After the load was removed, the instances were terminated automatically by AWS to save costs.

Countless steps were taken to make the web service bigger and more scalable than it originally was, before testing, including adding more fields to user profiles, adding more search types, and separating the layers of code into different Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) files in the front-end. A version control system was configured on the servers using GitHub and rsync. The systems architecture designed suggests the Match Engine should use a stream processing message queue, which would allow the system to factor searches one at a time as they are created, with horizontal scaling capabilities, rather than grabbing the entire database and storing it in memory. The backend Match Engine was also tested for accuracy using Structured Query Language (SQL) injection, which determined how the match algorithm should be improved in the future.

Abstract:

This degree project is about Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and its implementations Jini and Web services. SOA is a description of how application integration between different platforms can be carried out by designing applications as services, which implies an easier integration with other applications. Dynamic location of services is carried out by consultation with a register service so that applications can find other applications. We design and implement a mechanism in Web services that makes it possible to change service during execution. A change of service can be interesting for two reasons, the service might be registered but not available or there might be some sort of fault during execution that makes the service unavailable.

Everything is connected to everything. El Aleph (1945), by Jorge Luis Borges[1] This thesis addresses the need to simplify and streamline web service network infrastructure and to identify business models that best leverage Web services technology and industry dynamics to generate positive business results. Web services have evolved from the simple page-display protocol of their origin and now reach beyond the links that simply updated web data dynamically from corporate databases, to where systems can automatically transact. These Web services represent a series of network business technology standards and capabilities that irrevocably change the way in which businesses will do business. In fact, every business today is a networked business and has opportunities to grow using Web services. This study focuses on the implementation challenges in the financial services market, specifically the On Line Transaction Processing (OLTP) sector where legacy mainframes interface with multiple tiers of distribution through proprietary EDI links. The OLTP industry operates under stringent regulatory requirements for availability and audit-ability of not only who performed what transaction, but who had access to the information about the information. In this environment organizational demands on network infrastructure including hardware, software and personnel are changing radically, while concurrently Information Technology (IT) budgets are under pressure. The strategic choices for deploying web services in this environment may contain lessons for other industries where cost effective large scale processing, high availability, security, manageability and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) are paramount concerns. In this paper we use a systems dynamics model to simulate the impact of market changes on the adoption of innovative technologies and their commoditization on the industry value chain, with the aim of identifying business models and network topologies which best support the growth of an Open Systems network business. From the results of the simulation we will derive strategic recommendations for networked business models and web services integration strategies to meet Line Of Business (LOB) objectives.

There are several useful web services developed at MIT by students, faculty and researchers. However, they are scattered all over MIT. Most people at MIT are unaware of the availability of these web services and hence they cannot leverage them. The thesis provides a solution to this problem called Web Services @ MIT that tracks all the web services scattered over MIT at a single location, with a brief description of the service they provide. Web Services @ MIT is intended to facilitate exploitation of both centrally and locally developed web services in a highly distributed enterprise such as MIT. While there is a compelling need for such a service, no such service is currently available at MIT. Web Services @ MIT is a portal built on top of IBuySpy Portal Solution Kit that allows one to build intranet and Internet application using ASP.NET along with Microsoft .NET Framework.

Shu, Shujing. "Towards Integration of SOAP-Based Web Services and OGC Web Services." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2004. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/469.

Abstract:
Over the last several years, the Web Services model of Geographic Information Systems has been rapidly evolved and materialized. In this thesis project, I have reviewed the current status of integrating the general Web Services technology (SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI) and OpenGIS Consortium (OGC) Web services standards in developing distributed GIS computing. The overlap of the web service model and the technology stack between the SOAP-based Web Services and OGC Web Services indicates the feasibility of integration. OGC has named all core general Web Services Technologies (SOAP, WSDL, UDDI) in its envisioned OWS architecture. OGC has also started putting efforts for the integration by conducting experiments, which include a SOAP experiment and an UDDI experiment. However, these experiments only identified some very specific issues based on small number of testing interfaces and scenarios. There are leading GIS software vendors who have adopted both areas in their implementation. The ESRI ArcWeb Services is a good example, which implements OGC Web Services Interfaces using SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI. In my implementation experiment, Java Web Services Developer Pack is used to build a client of Microsoft TerraService. SOAP messages are constructed to retrieve DOQ images from the TerraService as the background to display ArcSDE feature data. Query functionalities on the feature data are implemented.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, we present a novel approach for the automatic composition of Web services on the envisioned Semantic Web. Automatic service composition requires dealing with three major research thrusts: semantic description of Web services, composability of participant services, and generation of composite service descriptions. This dissertation deals with the aforementioned research issues. We first propose an ontology-based framework for organizing and describing semantic Web services. We introduce the concept of community to cluster Web services based on their domain of interest. Each community is defined as an instance of an ontology called community ontology. We then propose a composability model to check whether semantic Web services can be combined together, hence avoiding unexpected failures at run time. The model defines formal safeguards for meaningful composition through the use of composability rules. We also introduce the notions of composability degree and tau-composability to cater for partial and total composability. Based on the composability model, we propose a set of algorithms that automatically generate detailed descriptions of composite services from high-level specifications of composition requests. We introduce a Quality of Composition (QoC) model to assess the quality of the generated composite services. The techniques presented in this dissertation are implemented in WebDG, a prototype for accessing e-government Web services. Finally, we conduct an extensive performance study (analytical and experimental) of the proposed composition algorithms.

Abstract:
This report describes the development of a RESTful web service for mobile applications. The web service makes resources from an existing system called kompetensdatabasen ("the competence database") available. Kompetensdatabasen holds information about the capabilities of consultants and about assignments carried out at the IT consultant business Nethouse AB. The web service was developed according to the principles of REST and ROA (Resource Oriented Architecture) which puts focus on making resources available. The resources are made available through the HTTP protocol and the methods associated with it. This means it was designed to use the same technologies as the world wide web. Following these principles when designing the system has been of great importance. To make sure that the service does not leak information to competing companies or violate the Personal Data Act some kind of solution for securing the service had to be implemented. A model for authentication was produced to make the system accessible only for employees of the company.

Abstract:
Emerging web services technology has introduced the concept of autonomic interoperability and portability between services. The number of online services has increased dramatically with many duplicating similar functionality and results. Composing online services to solve user needs is a growing area of research. This entails designing systems which can discover participating services and integrate these according to the end user requirements. This thesis proposes a Dynamic Web Services Composition (DWSC) process that is based upon consideration of previously successful attempts in this area, in particular utilizing AI-planning based solutions. It proposes a unique approach for service selection and dynamic web service composition by exploring the possibility of semantic web usability and its limitations. It also proposes a design architecture called Optimal Synthesis Plan Generation framework (OSPG), which supports the composition process through the evaluation of all available solutions (including all participating single and composite services). OSPG is designed to take into account user preferences, which supports optimality and robustness of the output plan. The implementation of OSPG will be congured and tested via division of search criteria in dierent modes thereby locating the best plan for the user. The services composition and discovery-based model is evaluated via considering a range of criteria, such as scope, correctness, scalability and versatility metrics.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Web services are a new paradigm for building software applications that has many advantages over the previous paradigms; however, Web Services are still not widely used because Service Requesters do not trust services that were built by others. Testing can assuage this problem because it can be used to assess the quality attributes of Web Services. This thesis proposes a framework and presents a proof of concept tool that can be used to test the robustness and other related attributes of a Web Service. The tool can be easily enhanced to assess other quality attributes. The framework is based on analyzing Web Services Description Language (WSDL) documents of Web Services to find what faults could affect the robustness quality attributes. After that using these faults to build test case generation rules to assess the robustness quality attribute of Web Services. This framework will give a better understanding of the faults that may affect the robustness quality attribute of Web Services, how these faults are related to the interface or the contract of a Web Service under test, and what testing techniques can be used to detect such faults. The approach used in this thesis for building test cases for Web Services was used with many examples in order to demonstrate its effectiveness; these examples have shown that the approach and the proof of concept tool are able to assess the robustness of Web Services implementation and Web Services platforms. Four hundred and two test clients were automatically built by the tool, based on the test cases rules, to assess the robustness of these Web Services examples. These test clients detected eleven robustness failures in the Web Services implementations and nine robustness failures in the Web Services platforms. Also the approach was able to help in comparing the robustness of two different Web Services platforms, namely Axis and GLUE. After deploying the same Web Services in both of these platforms; Axis showed less robustness and security failures than GLUE.

Abstract:
Workflow systems orchestrate various business tasks to attain an objective. Web services can be leveraged to handle individual tasks. Before anyone intends to leverage service components, it is imperative and essential to evaluate the trustworthiness of these services. Therefore, choosing a trustworthy service has become an important decision while designing a workflow system. Trustworthiness can be defined as the likelihood of a service functioning as it is intended. Selection of a service that satisfies business goals involves collecting relevant information such as security mechanisms, reliability, performance and availability. It is important to arrive at total trustworthiness, which incorporates all of the above mentioned multi-facet values relevant to a service. These values can be gathered and analyzed to derive the total trustworthiness of a service. Measuring trustworthiness of a service involves arriving at a suitable value that would help an end-user make a decision for the given business settings. The primary focus of this thesis is to gather relevant details and measure trustworthiness based on inputs provided by the user. A conceptual model was developed after extensive literature review to identify factors that influence trustworthiness of a service. A mechanism was created to gather concept values for a given service and utilize those values to calculate trustworthiness index value. A proof-of-concept prototype was also developed. The prototype is a web-based application that implements the mechanism to measure the trustworthiness of the service. The prototype was evaluated using a scenario-based analysis method to demonstrate the utility of the trustworthiness mechanism using three different scenarios. Results of the evaluation shows that trustworthiness is a multidimensional concept, the relevant conceptual values can be collected, a trustworthiness index value can be calculated based on the gathered concepts, and a trustworthiness index can be interpreted to select the most relevant service for a given requirement.

Abstract:
Dissertação de Mestrado em Engenharia Informática
In web services context it is not possible to use the usual concept of ACID transactions because of several factors. For instance, business transaction in general have a long duration that can be extended to several months or can involve the coordination and interaction of activities executed by different partners. In these cases, atomicity is not preserved, therefore the usual recovery mechanisms cannot be used, like the rollback. In business transaction, failure treatment can be made by compensation mechanisms in which are defined actions of compensation for the actions that cannot be reverted automatically. The goal of this dissertation is to define a set of patterns that represent the common use of the recovery mechanisms at business level. A graphical notation of easy comprehension will be developed to show how the recovery mechanisms work to all kind of people with different background formation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Current technology for locating and validating composite services are not sufficient due to the following reasons. • Current frameworks do not have the capacity to create complete service descriptions since they do not model all the functional aspects together (i.e. the purpose of a service, state transitions, data transformations). Those that deal with behavioural descriptions are unable to model the ordering constraints between concurrent interactions completely since they do not consider the time taken by interactions. Furthermore, there is no mechanism to assess the correctness of a functional description. • Existing semantic-based matching techniques cannot locate services that conform to global constraints. Semantic-based techniques use ontological relationships to perform mappings between the terms in service descriptions and user requests. Therefore, unlike techniques that perform either direct string matching or schema matching, semantic-based approaches can match descriptions created with different terminologies and achieve a higher recall. Global constraints relate to restrictions on values of two or more attributes of multiple constituent services. • Current techniques that generate and validate global communication models of composite services yield inaccurate results (i.e. detect phantom deadlocks or ignore actual deadlocks) since they either (i) do not support all types of interactions (i.e. only send and receive, not service and invoke) or (ii) do not consider the time taken by interactions. This thesis presents novel ideas to deal with the stated limitations. First, we propose two formalisms (WS-ALUE and WS-π-calculus) for creating functional and behavioural descriptions respectively. WS-ALUE extends the Description Logic language ALUE with some new predicates and models all the functional aspects together. WS-π-calculus extends π-calculus with Interval Time Logic (ITL) axioms. ITL axioms accurately model temporal relationships between concurrent interactions. A technique comparing a WS-π-calculus description of a service against its WS-ALUE description is introduced to detect any errors that are not equally reflected in both descriptions. We propose novel semantic-based matching techniques to locate composite services that conform to global constraints. These constraints are of two types: strictly dependent or independent. A constraint is of the former type if the values that should be assigned to all the remaining restricted attributes can be uniquely determined once a value is assigned to one. Any global constraint that is not strictly dependent is independent. A complete and correct technique that locates services that conform to strictly dependent constraints in polynomial time, is defined using a three-dimensional data cube. The proposed approach that deals with independent constraints is correct, but not complete, and is a heuristic approach. It incorporates user defined objective functions, greedy algorithms and domain rules to locate conforming services. We propose a new approach to generate global communication models (of composite services) that are free of deadlocks and synchronisation conflicts. This approach is an extension of a transitive temporal reasoning mechanism.

Abstract:
The last decade has demonstrated steady growth and utilization of Web Service technology. While Web Services have become significant in a number of IT domains such as eCommerce, digital libraries, data feeds, and geographical information systems, common portals or registries of Web Services require manual publishing for indexing. Manually compiled registries of Web Services have proven useful but often fail to include a considerable amount of Web Services published and available on the Web. We propose a system capable of finding, binding, and integrating Web Services into an index in an automated manner. By using a combination of guided search and web crawling techniques, the system finds a large number of Web Service providers that are further bound and aggregated into a single portal available for public use. Results show that this approach is successful in discovering a considerable number of Web Services in the GIS(Geographical Information Systems) domain, and demonstrate improvements over existing methods of Web Service Discovery.

HTTP, Web service, personal service, Broker, browser, HTTP redirection, name server. The purpose of this thesis was to devise a mechanism to allow Web servers (or services) to nd out and use other Web services running locally to Web clients (personal services). To do so, we had to create a solution for having a local name server to nd out personal services (i.e., resolve names to service handles) and a solution for allowing Web servers to invoke personal services given those handles. The communication between the Web servers and the local name server or the personal services is mediated by the Web client (a browser) using a new HTTP redirection mechanism.

The insert of new protocols and new functionalities in the architecture of web services can allow the applications to find available services in the internet and, besides, they can measure the quality of the available service and like this to address his call for the best service. Abstract:

Abstract:
Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) represents an emerging architectural approach that is able to tackle challenges in the contemporary service-based economy, in which the global market revenues are shifting from the manufacture of traditional off-the-shelf products to the provision of diversified services that suffice for customers’ needs. In such a service-based economy, one can envisage an entirely “service-oriented” world, where a massive number of distributed services with different natures and capabilities are provided by various professionals around the world. Problems arise when business applications demand desirable services through different sources and providers that are appropriate for their own benefits and preferences. Therefore, it can be very challenging to design an SOA infrastructure that enables users to exploit this great level of service heterogeneity and quantity. One of the key issues in service-oriented architecture is to achieve efficient service discovery and loosely-coupled service distribution while maintaining a satisfactory degree of scalability, usability, and Web consistency. This thesis deals with SOA infrastructure-level design and implementation issues. It approaches this SOA infrastructure within the scope of Web services, which capture an important, and perhaps the best, ‘realisation’ of SOA. It investigates and formulates how public Web services distributed across the World Wide Web can be augmented by a software platform that enables scalable, user-centred,semantic-enabled, and integration-oriented service retrieval, selection, and matching. The primary goal of this thesis is thus to propose a conceptual framework of an enhanced SOA infrastructure with regard to service distribution and discovery. It also aims to design and implement a platform (PWSP), by means of which a large number of public Web services on the Web can be distributed based on service demands, retrieved based on service descriptions, selected based on service qualities, and matched based on service messages in a user-centred, scalable, and Web-consistent manner without augmenting existing Web services standards.

Abstract:
Web services and their compositions have become increasingly pervasive in recent years. Web service orchestrations are Web service compositions involving a central entity - the ''orchestrator'' - which calls other Web services in various orders (in parallel/sequence, etc), combining their responses in different ways to form a new Web service in itself. In business environments, the non-functional - or the Quality of Service (QoS) - behaviour of the services is of high importance and it can alone decide the success or the failure of a service. In this thesis we propose a theory of QoS for Web Service orchestrations, and develop a framework for the management of QoS in orchestrations. We adopt a /contract-based/ approach for managing QoS, where the services called by the orchestrator are seen as its 'sub-contractors', and have contracts with the orchestrator. These contracts specify the behaviour of both the functional and the non-functional or the QoS aspects of the service. We propose the use of ''soft probabilistic contracts'', to capture the inherent variability in QoS behaviours. A contract-based approach implicitly assumes that when the performance of a contracted service improves, the performance of the orchestration as a whole in turn improves. We show that this property, that we call ``monotonicity'', can be easily violated in orchestrations. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for monotonicity to hold. We show how probabilistic contracts can be composed to derive a contract that the orchestrator can offer to its own clients. We also give a method to monitor these probabilistic contracts, using statistical techniques. Our whole framework is supported by an implementation over a Java interpreter of Orc, an orchestration language

This Master thesis enhances an existing library search system with a new dynamic web interface and introduces the ability to perform remote searches by using Web Services. The remote search functionality also includes the ability to compress SOAP-messages, this functionality is optional. The system is implemented using the Microsoft.NET Framework with Visual Studio C#. A library needs to store information about articles and we have chosen to use a Sybase Adaptive Server Anywhere database.

The practical part of this thesis describes the architecture of our implementation and the design process.

The theoretical part is a comparative study between dynamically created web pages and static pages, SOAP-compression versus no compression, SOAP-optimization versus no optimisation and the use of Web Services locally versus local classes.

Abstract:
Web services are often used for search computing where data is retrieved from servers providing information of different kinds. Such data providing web services return a set of objects for a given set of parameters without any side effects. There is need to enable general and scalable search capabilities of data from data providing web services, which is the topic of this Thesis. The Web Service MEDiator (WSMED) system automatically provides relational views of any data providing web service operations by reading the WSDL documents describing them. These views can be queried with SQL. Without any knowledge of the costs of executing specific web service operations the WSMED query processor automatically and adaptively finds an optimized parallel execution plan calling queried data providing web services. For scalable execution of queries to data providing web services, an algebra operator PAP adaptively parallelizes calls in execution plans to web service operations until no significant performance improvement is measured, based on monitoring the flow from web service operations without any cost knowledge or extensive memory usage. To comply with the Everything as a Service (XaaS) paradigm WSMED itself is implemented as a web service that provides web service operations to query and combine data from data providing web services. A web based demonstration of the WSMED web service provides general SQL queries to any data providing web service operations from a browser. WSMED assumes that all queried data sources are available as web services. To make any data providing system into a data providing web service WSMED includes a subsystem, the web service generator, which generates and deploys the web service operations to access a data source. The WSMED web service itself is generated by the web service generator.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Immediately after its appearance in 1999, Web Services has become the hottest topic in the information technology industry. Web Services was primarily fostered by the exponentially growing demand for highly efficient Business-to-Business (B2B) solutions.
Web Services is a highly modularized application level framework. Its fundamental idea is to enable Web applications to interact with each other regardless of platforms, languages or network infrastructure used. This understanding has been accepted and shared by current Web Services vendors, users, professionals and standards organizations. Meanwhile, Web Services concepts, architecture, components, working models and direction are still under debate. This thesis provides an introduction to these topics based on a thorough research across existing materials.
The first part of this thesis clarifies the architecture and basic concepts of Web Services. The second part provides a complete introduction and analysis of the two groups of technologies stated above, and shows how these technologies work together. The third part of this thesis presents a discussion of the advantages and potential applications of Web Services. It is based on the perspectives of a variety of technical experts and solution designers. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Abstract:
Web Services form the basis of the web based eCommerce eScience applications so it is vital that robust services are developed. Traditional validation and verification techniques are centred around the concept of removing all faults to guarantee correct operation whereas Dependability gives an assessment of how dependably a system can deliver the required functionality by assessing attributes, and by eliminating threats via means attempts to improve dependability. Fault injection is a well-proven dependability assessment method. Although much work has been done in the area of fault injection and distributed systems in general, there appears to have been little research carried out on applying this to middleware systems and Web Services in particular. There are additional problems associated with applying existing fault injection technologies to Web Services running in a virtual machine environment since most are either invasive or work at a machine level. The Fault Injection Technology (FIT) method has been devised to address these problems for middleware systems. The Web Service-Fault Injection Technology (WS-FIT) implementation applies the FIT method, based on network level fault injection, to Web Services to create a non-invasive dependability assessment method. It allows targeted perturbation of Web Service RFC parameters as well as more traditional network level fault injection operations. The WS-FIT tool includes taxonomies that define a system under test, fault models to apply and failure modes to be detected, and uses these taxonomies to generate fault injection campaigns. WS-FIT has been applied to a number of case studies and has successfully demonstrated its effectiveness. It has also been successfully applied to a third-party system to evaluate dependability means. It performed this dependability assessment as well as allowing debugging of the means to be undertaken uncovering unknown faults.

Abstract:
The challenge of securing of Web based transaction services continues to influence the development and evolution of ecommerce and Web Services. This problem had driven the computer industry and standards organizations to introduce a number of security measures in an attempt to compensate for the growing security concerns of enterprises and the software development community. These efforts have not yielded a standardized architectural framework to securing Web based transaction services. The research that was conducted provided a solution to this problem by using a unique combination of technologies and architectural design techniques that provided a security framework for these transactions. The research model defined an architectural framework that incorporated infrastructure technologies, including Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and Lightweight Directory Protocol (LDAP), along with XML security and a set of SOAP specification extensions that when used in conjunction with custom Java components provided an environment for secure web based transaction services. This framework used a centralized operational model that represented behavioral, security and resource location parameters in an LDAP repository. The custom Java components of the framework provided client driven capabilities that allowed a client and service provider to establish a secure transaction relationship by using a predetermined negotiation protocol that captured these parameters in the LDAP repository. The parameters defined the trust relationship in the LDAP repository and were communicated in SOAP messages using Directory Service Markup Language (DSML). These DSML SOAP messages were used with custom SOAP extensions that applied a set of operational design patterns that communicated transaction behavior between client and service provider to ensure security of the Web based transactions. The research model used this extended SOAP model and XML security to provide message level confidentiality, authentication, authorization, content integrity and non-repudiation. The framework provided these security characteristics within a SOAP messaging environment that provided end-to-end message security, application independence, transport protocol independence, intermediary soap server processing capabilities, message protection during transmission and storage and notary service capabilities.

Web services have expanded to become popular in application development. Web services technology represents an important way of communication between different applications across different platforms. Unlike traditional client/server models, such as a Web application or Web page system, Web services do not provide the user with a GUI. Instead, Web services share business logic, functionality and data through a programmatic interface across a network. Web services are services or functionalities that are exposed to the internet and serves as online or web APIs. These services which are online APIs can be called from your code and use the results in your applications to offer specific functionality to users. This project consists of two applications the client and the server application. The server application is an online REST API (Web Services developed using REpresentational State Transfer (REST) protocol) which provides all the functionalities as a service across the network that are required to develop a social networking web application. The client application is similar to any other social networking web application where you can create a profile, delete profile, send messages to your friends, post things, like and comment a post. This applications sends request to the server application using HTTP requests and get the responses. These responses are then consumed in the application to provide the required functionalities to the end user.

Abstract:
In this work is presented the integration of an established system of intelligent instrumentation with the Web Service?s architecture, in accordance with the IEEE 1451.1 standard. It is suggested the association of a data-communication protocol with the concept of Transducer Electronic Data Sheet (TEDS) to a Web Service for making possible the remote configuration of a data acquisition system. Through a remote supervisor interface, accessible via Internet from any browser, the user can, at the first moment, identify which are the smart sensors connected in a network, using an unique identification associated to its characteristics (type, data formatting, etc.). In the same graphical interface the user can choose which sensors wants to monitor and, after the selection, will have available the monitoring interface that enables data visualization through a graph and allows the user to save the collected data in a text file. In the same monitoring interface the Web Service is also available; it admits modifications on the data collection interval. A group of computers in a local network (Intranet) simulates the smart sensors network. In the same network is connected a server responsible for supplying the remote supervisor interface.

Abstract:
This dissertation addresses issues for the efficient access to Web databases and services. We propose a distributed ontology for a meaningful organization of and efficient access to Web databases. Next, we dedicate most of our work on presenting a comprehensive query infrastructure for the emerging concept of Web services. The core of this query infrastructure is to enable the efficient delivery of Web services based on the concept of Quality of Web Service. Treating Web services as first class objects is a fundamental step towards achieving the envisioned Semantic Web. Semantics-aware processing of information requires intensive use of Web services. In our research, we propose a new query model where queries are resolved by combining Web service invocations. To efficiently deploy such scheme, we propose an optimization strategy based on aggregating Quality of Web service (QoWS) of different Web services. QoWS is adjusted through a dynamic rating scheme and multilevel matching. Web service rating provides an assessment of their behavior. The multilevel matching allows a larger solution space by enabling similar and partial answers.

Abstract:
První část je věnována vymezení pozice a úlohy webových služeb v rámci celého IS/ICT.

Abstract:
The goal of this research is to make it easier to design and create web services for relational databases. A web service is a software service for providing data over computer networks. Web services provide data endpoints for many web applications. We adopt a plug-and-play approach for web service creation whereby a designer constructs a “plug,” which is a simple specification of the output produced by the service. If the plug can be “played” on the database then the web service is generated. Our plug-and-play approach has three advantages. First, a plug is portable. You can take the plug to any data source and generate a web service. Second, a plug-and-play service is more reliable. The web service generation checks the database to determine if the service can be safely and correctly generated. Third, plug-and-play web services are easier to code for complex data since a service designer can write a simple plug, abstracting away the data’s real complexity. We describe how to build a system for plug-and-play web services, and experimentally evaluate the system. The software produced by this research will make life easier for web service designers.
