McElhiney, Patrick R. "Scalable Web Service Development with Amazon Web Services." Thesis, University of New Hampshire, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10931435.
Full textThe objective of this thesis was to explore the topic of scalable web development, and it answered the question, “How do you scale a website to handle more traffic at peak times without wasting resources?” This is important research to any web company that has issues with rising costs as demand for their website increases. It would be wise for every online business to be prepared for more web traffic, before it occurs, without spending the budget of a multi-million user web company in low traffic periods. The last thing you want is an error as your customer base starts to arrive, giving them a bad experience for their first impressions, which would result in lost revenue.
Scalable software development architectures, including microservices, big data, and Kubernetes were studied, in addition to similar web service companies including Facebook, Twitter, and Match.com. A scalable architecture was designed for a social media web service, MeAndYou, using the big data configuration with a shared Aurora database, which was configured using an auto-scaling group attached to a load balancer in Amazon Web Services (AWS). It was tested using a custom threaded Selenium-based Python script that applied simulated user load to the servers. As the load was applied, AWS added more Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances running a virtual disk image of the web server. After the load was removed, the instances were terminated automatically by AWS to save costs.
Countless steps were taken to make the web service bigger and more scalable than it originally was, before testing, including adding more fields to user profiles, adding more search types, and separating the layers of code into different Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) files in the front-end. A version control system was configured on the servers using GitHub and rsync. The systems architecture designed suggests the Match Engine should use a stream processing message queue, which would allow the system to factor searches one at a time as they are created, with horizontal scaling capabilities, rather than grabbing the entire database and storing it in memory. The backend Match Engine was also tested for accuracy using Structured Query Language (SQL) injection, which determined how the match algorithm should be improved in the future.

This degree project is about Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and its implementations Jini and Web services. SOA is a description of how application integration between different platforms can be carried out by designing applications as services, which implies an easier integration with other applications. Dynamic location of services is carried out by consultation with a register service so that applications can find other applications. We design and implement a mechanism in Web services that makes it possible to change service during execution. A change of service can be interesting for two reasons, the service might be registered but not available or there might be some sort of fault during execution that makes the service unavailable.

Everything is connected to everything. El Aleph (1945), by Jorge Luis Borges[1] This thesis addresses the need to simplify and streamline web service network infrastructure and to identify business models that best leverage Web services technology and industry dynamics to generate positive business results. Web services have evolved from the simple page-display protocol of their origin and now reach beyond the links that simply updated web data dynamically from corporate databases, to where systems can automatically transact. These Web services represent a series of network business technology standards and capabilities that irrevocably change the way in which businesses will do business. In fact, every business today is a networked business and has opportunities to grow using Web services. This study focuses on the implementation challenges in the financial services market, specifically the On Line Transaction Processing (OLTP) sector where legacy mainframes interface with multiple tiers of distribution through proprietary EDI links. The OLTP industry operates under stringent regulatory requirements for availability and audit-ability of not only who performed what transaction, but who had access to the information about the information. In this environment organizational demands on network infrastructure including hardware, software and personnel are changing radically, while concurrently Information Technology (IT) budgets are under pressure. The strategic choices for deploying web services in this environment may contain lessons for other industries where cost effective large scale processing, high availability, security, manageability and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) are paramount concerns. In this paper we use a systems dynamics model to simulate the impact of market changes on the adoption of innovative technologies and their commoditization on the industry value chain, with the aim of identifying business models and network topologies which best support the growth of an Open Systems network business. From the results of the simulation we will derive strategic recommendations for networked business models and web services integration strategies to meet Line Of Business (LOB) objectives.

There are several useful web services developed at MIT by students, faculty and researchers. However, they are scattered all over MIT. Most people at MIT are unaware of the availability of these web services and hence they cannot leverage them. The thesis provides a solution to this problem called Web Services @ MIT that tracks all the web services scattered over MIT at a single location, with a brief description of the service they provide. Web Services @ MIT is intended to facilitate exploitation of both centrally and locally developed web services in a highly distributed enterprise such as MIT. While there is a compelling need for such a service, no such service is currently available at MIT. Web Services @ MIT is a portal built on top of IBuySpy Portal Solution Kit that allows one to build intranet and Internet application using ASP.NET along with Microsoft .NET Framework.

Full textIn web services context it is not possible to use the usual concept of ACID transactions because of several factors. For instance, business transaction in general have a long duration that can be extended to several months or can involve the coordination and interaction of activities executed by different partners. In these cases, atomicity is not preserved, therefore the usual recovery mechanisms cannot be used, like the rollback. In business transaction, failure treatment can be made by compensation mechanisms in which are defined actions of compensation for the actions that cannot be reverted automatically. The goal of this dissertation is to define a set of patterns that represent the common use of the recovery mechanisms at business level. A graphical notation of easy comprehension will be developed to show how the recovery mechanisms work to all kind of people with different background formation.

Full textWe are interested in this thesis by the Web Services personalization, specifically on how to offer a Web Services in several variants in order to satisfy a large number of different Web Services clients. The Web Services personalization increases the usability of Web Services. We propose a general framework for understanding personalizable Web Services and the Web Services personalization problem. Such a problem consists in the discovery, for a specific client, of a given Web Services (simple or composite) variant that can satisfy it. We present some models for personalizable Web Services specification where theWeb Services discovery and composition are reduced to reasoning tasks in knowledge-based systems. These models are considered as annotation languages above existing low-level Web Services description languages. We also propose a solution allowing the adaptation, in many variants, of a Web Services offered only in one variant

HTTP, Web service, personal service, Broker, browser, HTTP redirection, name server. The purpose of this thesis was to devise a mechanism to allow Web servers (or services) to nd out and use other Web services running locally to Web clients (personal services). To do so, we had to create a solution for having a local name server to nd out personal services (i.e., resolve names to service handles) and a solution for allowing Web servers to invoke personal services given those handles. The communication between the Web servers and the local name server or the personal services is mediated by the Web client (a browser) using a new HTTP redirection mechanism.

The invocations to available services in the internet are built in a static way, always referring the same web service and the same web method. When this service presents low readiness the performance of the application it will be reduced. To avoid this problem it is necessary that the application has the ability to identify the best made available service and then it can invoke it. The insert of new protocols and new functionalities in the architecture of web services can allow the applications to find available services in the internet and, besides, they can measure the quality of the available service and like this to address his call for the best service. Design patterns are not a lust, but an instrument for a better understanding of the proposed architecture

Full textWeb services and their compositions have become increasingly pervasive in recent years. Web service orchestrations are Web service compositions involving a central entity - the ''orchestrator'' - which calls other Web services in various orders (in parallel/sequence, etc), combining their responses in different ways to form a new Web service in itself. In business environments, the non-functional - or the Quality of Service (QoS) - behaviour of the services is of high importance and it can alone decide the success or the failure of a service. In this thesis we propose a theory of QoS for Web Service orchestrations, and develop a framework for the management of QoS in orchestrations. We adopt a /contract-based/ approach for managing QoS, where the services called by the orchestrator are seen as its 'sub-contractors', and have contracts with the orchestrator. These contracts specify the behaviour of both the functional and the non-functional or the QoS aspects of the service. We propose the use of ''soft probabilistic contracts'', to capture the inherent variability in QoS behaviours. A contract-based approach implicitly assumes that when the performance of a contracted service improves, the performance of the orchestration as a whole in turn improves. We show that this property, that we call ``monotonicity'', can be easily violated in orchestrations. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for monotonicity to hold. We show how probabilistic contracts can be composed to derive a contract that the orchestrator can offer to its own clients. We also give a method to monitor these probabilistic contracts, using statistical techniques. Our whole framework is supported by an implementation over a Java interpreter of Orc, an orchestration language

Full textWeb Services is a highly modularized application level framework. Its fundamental idea is to enable Web applications to interact with each other regardless of platforms, languages or network infrastructure used. This understanding has been accepted and shared by current Web Services vendors, users, professionals and standards organizations. Meanwhile, Web Services concepts, architecture, components, working models and direction are still under debate. This thesis provides an introduction to these topics based on a thorough research across existing materials.
The first part of this thesis clarifies the architecture and basic concepts of Web Services. The second part provides a complete introduction and analysis of the two groups of technologies stated above, and shows how these technologies work together. The third part of this thesis presents a discussion of the advantages and potential applications of Web Services. It is based on the perspectives of a variety of technical experts and solution designers. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Web services have expanded to become popular in application development. Web services technology represents an important way of communication between different applications across different platforms. Unlike traditional client/server models, such as a Web application or Web page system, Web services do not provide the user with a GUI. Instead, Web services share business logic, functionality and data through a programmatic interface across a network. Web services are services or functionalities that are exposed to the internet and serves as online or web APIs. These services which are online APIs can be called from your code and use the results in your applications to offer specific functionality to users. This project consists of two applications the client and the server application. The server application is an online REST API (Web Services developed using REpresentational State Transfer (REST) protocol) which provides all the functionalities as a service across the network that are required to develop a social networking web application. The client application is similar to any other social networking web application where you can create a profile, delete profile, send messages to your friends, post things, like and comment a post. This applications sends request to the server application using HTTP requests and get the responses. These responses are then consumed in the application to provide the required functionalities to the end user.

Full textIn this work is presented the integration of an established system of intelligent instrumentation with the Web Service?s architecture, in accordance with the IEEE 1451.1 standard. It is suggested the association of a data-communication protocol with the concept of Transducer Electronic Data Sheet (TEDS) to a Web Service for making possible the remote configuration of a data acquisition system. Through a remote supervisor interface, accessible via Internet from any browser, the user can, at the first moment, identify which are the smart sensors connected in a network, using an unique identification associated to its characteristics (type, data formatting, etc.). In the same graphical interface the user can choose which sensors wants to monitor and, after the selection, will have available the monitoring interface that enables data visualization through a graph and allows the user to save the collected data in a text file. In the same monitoring interface the Web Service is also available; it admits modifications on the data collection interval.
