Abstract:
Over the last several years, the Web Services model of Geographic Information Systems has been rapidly evolved and materialized. In this thesis project, I have reviewed the current status of integrating the general Web Services technology (SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI) and OpenGIS Consortium (OGC) Web services standards in developing distributed GIS computing. The overlap of the web service model and the technology stack between the SOAP-based Web Services and OGC Web Services indicates the feasibility of integration. OGC has named all core general Web Services Technologies (SOAP, WSDL, UDDI) in its envisioned OWS architecture. OGC has also started putting efforts for the integration by conducting experiments, which include a SOAP experiment and an UDDI experiment. However, these experiments only identified some very specific issues based on small number of testing interfaces and scenarios. There are leading GIS software vendors who have adopted both areas in their implementation. The ESRI ArcWeb Services is a good example, which implements OGC Web Services Interfaces using SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI. In my implementation experiment, Java Web Services Developer Pack is used to build a client of Microsoft TerraService. SOAP messages are constructed to retrieve DOQ images from the TerraService as the background to display ArcSDE feature data. Query functionalities on the feature data are implemented.

Abstract:
The last decade has demonstrated steady growth and utilization of Web Service technology. While Web Services have become significant in a number of IT domains such as eCommerce, digital libraries, data feeds, and geographical information systems, common portals or registries of Web Services require manual publishing for indexing. Manually compiled registries of Web Services have proven useful but often fail to include a considerable amount of Web Services published and available on the Web. We propose a system capable of finding, binding, and integrating Web Services into an index in an automated manner. By using a combination of guided search and web crawling techniques, the system finds a large number of Web Service providers that are further bound and aggregated into a single portal available for public use. Results show that this approach is successful in discovering a considerable number of Web Services in the GIS(Geographical Information Systems) domain, and demonstrate improvements over existing methods of Web Service Discovery.

Abstract:
Service Oriented Computing allows interoperability between distributed systems. In the last years, the emergence of the semantic Web opened new challenges for the research community regarding semantic interoperability on the data and processing levels. The convergence of service orientation and the semantic Web together is a promising effort to solve the problems that hampered both research fields. On the one hand, service orientation allows interoperability on the data and processing levels, and on the other hand, semantic Web allows the automation of high-level service manipulation tasks. In our research, we detail the challenges encountered by the research community to integrate the service orientation practices with the semanticWeb, more precisely, integrating REST-based services with the semantic Web implementation based on Linked Data principles to obtain RESTful Linked Services. The challenges in question are : description, discovery, selection and composition. We proposed a solution for each of these challenges. The contributions we proposed are : The descriptor structure, a semantically-enabled discovery algorithm, a Skyline-based selection algorithm and composition directories. We think that these contributions can be adopted by service providers on the Web in order to allow a seamless integration of semantic Web practices with the service technologies and REST in particular. This allows the automation of high-level service manipulation tasks, such as semantically-enabled discovery, QoS-based selection and the composition of heterogeneous services, be it on the data or processing level, in order to create value-added composite services

accomplished by using Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) where all components are

loosely coupled and communicate in a standardized way. An important part when building an

integrated solution is the Enterprise Service Bus (ESB). In this report we will explain the

Abstract:
Data integration has been an active topic of research in the past. With the advances in technology in the context of web, data integration faces new challenges imposed by heterogeneity of source, their autonomy and independence. Web services, which are universally accessible software components deployed on the web, are becoming the focus of recent researches due to their ability to interconnect systems and cost optimizations. At the same time, XML has also become one of the core technologies for business applications. By offering a standard, flexible and inherently extensible data format, XML significantly reduces the burden of deploying the many technologies needed to ensure the success of Web services. This thesis examines the opportunities for data integration in the context of web services development paradigm. It examines the existing technologies and standards of web services and XML and provides an example of how web services can be used to unlock heterogeneous systems to extract and integrate data. The approach followed to illustrate this uses embedded web service calls inside XML documents. The main contributions of this paper are: 1) comprehensive research of existing technologies 2) architecture to support invocation of embedded web services 3) implementation of an application to show the results 4) use of existing technologies to implement the proposed system.

Utvecklingen skedde mestadels i Visual Studio miljö.

Abstract:
Doutoramento em Informática (MAP-i)
In the last decades, the field of biomedical science has fostered unprecedented scientific advances. Research is stimulated by the constant evolution of information technology, delivering novel and diverse bioinformatics tools. Nevertheless, the proliferation of new and disconnected solutions has resulted in massive amounts of resources spread over heterogeneous and distributed platforms. Distinct data types and formats are generated and stored in miscellaneous repositories posing data interoperability challenges and delays in discoveries. Data sharing and integrated access to these resources are key features for successful knowledge extraction. In this context, this thesis makes contributions towards accelerating the semantic integration, linkage and reuse of biomedical resources. The first contribution addresses the connection of distributed and heterogeneous registries. The proposed methodology creates a holistic view over the different registries, supporting semantic data representation, integrated access and querying. The second contribution addresses the integration of heterogeneous information across scientific research, aiming to enable adequate data-sharing services. The third contribution presents a modular architecture to support the extraction and integration of textual information, enabling the full exploitation of curated data. The last contribution lies in providing a platform to accelerate the deployment of enhanced semantic information systems. All the proposed solutions were deployed and validated in the scope of rare diseases.

Abstract:
Home automation has evolved from a single integration of services (provided by devices, equipment, etc.) in the environment to a more broad integration of these core services with others(external to the environment) to create some added-value services for home users. This presents a key challenge of how to integrate disparate and heterogeneous e-service networks. To this, there exist already some good approaches but with some deficiencies. First, they fail to put in place some expeditious integration approach for having services registered across service domains. And then, do not provide a good method for having target services be transparently invoked from within the source environment. Thus, an enhanced integration concept is needed for tackling these challenges. As a solution, this work proposes an integration bridge concept, composed of two key elements: one, an interoperability bridge to go from service descriptions in the target environment format to service announcement in the source environment; and two, a service bridge, to have an image of the target service exist in the source environment as a service in itself. The concept has been tested and validated in JXTA-P2P source and W3C-WebServices target environments that much relate to Home Automation scenarios.

Abstract:
A semantic model oriented transformation mechanism is developed for the centralization of intra-enterprise data integration. Such a mechanism is especially crucial in the banking domain which is selected in this study. A new domain ontology is constructed to provide basis for annotations. A bottom-up approach is preferred for semantic annotations to utilize existing web service definitions. Transformations between syntactic web service XML responses and semantic model concepts are defined in transformation files. Transformation files are stored and executed in a separate central transformation repository to enhance abstraction and reusability. An RDF-Store is implemented to store transformed RDF data. Inference power of semantic model is exposed by executing semantic queries in the RDF-Store.

Abstract:
Mestrado em Engenharia de Computadores e Telemática
The latest trends on cloud and multi-cloud computing are well established in our society. However, the lack of interoperability raised a few issues that have been tackled with open standards and integration frameworks. Still, web application development adds a few more issues when accessing and managing cloud resources in the application’s logic. This thesis describes an extensible platform architecture for portable cloud service integration, designed to satisfy requirements and usage patterns of web applications. Moreover, it implements access control policies and mechanisms for cloud resource sharing, delegation and replication. Finally, the thesis presents performance tests of the solution, along with an analysis and discussion of the results obtained.

Abstract:
The success of Web services comes from the benefits that it brings in reducing the cost and the time needed to develop data and applications by reusing them, and simplifying their integrations through standardization. However, standardization in Web services does not remove the need for adapters due to possible heterogeneity among service interface and protocol definitions. Moreover, the current service APIs are targeted toward professional programmers, but not accessible to a wider class of users without programming expertise, but would never the less like to build their own integrated applications. In this dissertation, we propose methods and tools to support both service developers and non-expert users in their data and application integration tasks. To support service developers, we propose a framework that enables rapid development of Web service adapters. We investigate particularly the problem of service adaptation focusing on business interface and protocol layers. Our study shows that many differences between business interfaces and protocols are recurring. We introduce mismatch patterns to capture these recurring differences and provide solutions to resolve them. We present the notion of adaptation aspects, which is based on the aspect-oriented programming paradigm, to enable rapid development and deployment of service adapters. We also present a comparative study between standalone and aspect-oriented adapters development. The study shows that the aspect-oriented approach is preferable in many cases, especially when adapters need to access internal states of services. The proposed approach is implemented in a prototype tool, which is used to illustrate how it simplifies adapters development through a case study. To support users without programming expertise, we propose a spreadsheet-based Web mashups development framework, which enables users to develop mashups in the popular spreadsheet environment. First, we provide a mechanism that makes structured data first class values of spreadsheet cells. Second, we propose a new component model that can be used to develop fairly sophisticated mashups, involving joining data sources and keeping spreadsheet data up to date. Third, to simplify mashup development, we provide a collection of spreadsheet-based mashup patterns that captures common Web data access and spreadsheet presentation functionalities. Users can reuse and customize these patterns to build spreadsheet-based Web mashups instead of developing them from scratch. Fourth, we enable users to manipulate structured data presented on spreadsheet in a drag-and-drop fashion. Finally, we have developed and tested a prototype tool to demonstrate the utility of the proposed framework.

Abstract:
This paper's aim is to design and implement a tool transforming REST Web APIs into APIs which facilitate the integration process. The improvement of integration is mainly divided into two parts: The embedding of semantic data in order to establish a common understanding of objects, properties and relations and the possibility to navigate through the API structure in an easy and automated way. The theoretical part is dealing with the fundamentals of Web APIs, today's related trends and the API's shortages and points of improvement. Another objective of this paper is to compare current data standards of output formats for so called Hypermedia APIs, whereas the most suitable components will be chosen as the output format of this paper's resulting tool. The practical part is dealing with the design and implementation of the tool being developed. Included, there is the description of test scenarios, related benefits for the tool's users as well as a final evaluation of the resulting tool and a discussion of the tool's future potential. The benefits of the tool are evaluated in a case study.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Scientific databases often need to be accessed from a variety of different applications. There are usually many ways to retrieve and analyse data already in a database. However, it can be more difficult to enter data which has originally been stored in different sources and formats (e.g. spreadsheets, other databases, statistical packages). This project focuses on investigating a generic, platform independent way to simplify the loading of databases. The proposed solution uses Web services as middleware to supply essential data management functionality such as inserting, updating, deleting and retrieval of data. These functions allow application developers to easily customise their own data entry applications according to local data sources, formats and user requirements. We implemented a Web service to support loading data to the Germinate database at the New Zealand Institute of Crop & Food Research (CFR). We also provided language specific client toolkits to help developers invoke the Web service. The toolkits allow applications to be easily customised for different platforms. In addition, we developed sample applications to help end users load data from their project data sources via the Web service. The Web service approach was evaluated through user and developer trials. The feedback from the developer trial showed that using Web services as middleware is a useful approach to allow developers and competent end users to customise data entry with minimal effort. More importantly, the customised client applications enabled end users to load data directly from their project spreadsheets and databases. It significantly reduced the effort required for exporting or transforming the source data.

In this dissertation, we propose a novel approach for the automatic composition of DaaS Web services (DaaS Data-gs-g-S.ervice Web services). Automatic DaaS Web service composition requires dealing with three major research thrusts: (i) describing the semantics of DaaS Web services, (ii) selecting and combining relevant DaaS Web services, and (iii) generating composite service descriptions (i.e. the compositions' plans). We first propose to model DaaS Web services as RDF views over domain ontologies. An RDF view allows capturing the semantics of the associated DaaS Web service in a "declarative" way based on concepts and relationships whose semantics are formally defined in domain ontologies. The service description files (i.e. WSDL files) are annotated with the defined RDF views using the extensibility feature of the WSDL standard. We then propose to use query rewriting techniques for selecting and composing DaaS Web services. Specifically, we devised an efficient RDF-oriented query rewriting algorithm that selects relevant services based ontheir defined RDF views and combines them to ans~wer a posed query. It also generates an execution plan for the obtained composition/s. Our algorithm takes into account the RDFS semantic constraints (i.e. "subClassOf", "subPropertyOf", "Domain" and "Range") and is able to address both specifie and parameterized queries. Since DaaS Web services may be used to access sensitive and private data; we also extended our DaaS service composition approach to handle data privacy concems. Posed queries are modified to accommodate pertaining privacy conditions from data privacy policies before their resolution by the core composition algorithm. Our proposed privacy preservation model takes user' s privacy preferences into account

Abstract:
Nowadays, Enterprise Applications Integration (EAI) performs a fundamental function in the scenery of enterprise systems integration. This can be done in different forms, for example by sharing the database access or working with Web Services, in which a service is provided by the system and can be called by other systems to be integrated. Those two solutions are being applied successfully, even though both present advantages and disadvantages that must be analyzed. Thus, the goal of this work is first to compare those two integration approaches, (Based on the standard ISO-IEC 9126-1) through a bibliographical review complemented by a systematic review and professional reports from the author of this work and her supervisor. In order to confirm this comparison, an experimental study was done, which resulted in quantitative answers about the best approach to perform systems integration: EAI-Data and EAI-WS which refer to effort required to deploy each. Thus, the assessment was conducted to answer the following question: In terms of development time and code produced, is easier to perform EAI-WS or EAI-Data? Finally, five patterns were proposed to EAI, which aim to support developers with similar problems of applications integration. These patterns can be reused in many integration contexts, following the rules of specific business to be considered in the moment of integration, and accelerating the modeling of the solution through the instantiation of the most adequate pattern to each situation

Abstract:
Most epidemiological systems described in the literature are built for evaluation and analysis of specific diseases, such as Influenza-like-illness. The modeling environments that support these systems are implemented for specific diseases and epidemiological models. Hence they are not reusable or extendable. This thesis focuses on the design and development of an integrated analytical environment with flexible data integration methodologies and multi-level web services for evaluation and forecasting of various epidemics in different regions of the world. The environment supports analysis of epidemics based on any combination of disease, surveillance sources, epidemiological models, geographic regions and demographic factors. The environment also supports evaluation and forecasting of epidemics when various policy-level and behavioral interventions are applied, that may inhibit the spread of an epidemic. First, we describe data integration methodologies and schema design, for flexible experiment design, storage and query retrieval mechanisms related to large scale epidemic data. We describe novel techniques for data transformation, optimization, pre-computation and automation that enable flexibility, extendibility and efficiency required in different categories of query processing. Second, we describe the design and engineering of adaptable middleware platforms based on service-oriented paradigms for interactive workflow, communication, and decoupled integration. This supports large-scale multi-user applications with provision for online analysis of interventions as well as analytical processing of forecast computations. Using a service-oriented architecture, we have provided a platform-as-a-service representation for evaluation and forecasting of epidemics. We demonstrate the applicability of our integrated environment through development of the applications, DISIMS and EpiCaster. DISIMS is an interactive web-based system for evaluating the effects of dynamic intervention strategies on epidemic propagation. EpiCaster is a situation assessment and forecasting tool for projecting the state of evolving epidemics such as flu and Ebola in different regions of the world. We discuss how our platform uses existing technologies to solve a novel problem in epidemiology, and provides a unique solution on which different applications can be built for analyzing epidemic containment strategies.

Abstract:
Service Oriented Architecture SOA is a well recognized and immensely applied reference model for service oriented computing, both in industry and research. Because of its fastidious features, such as reusability, interoperability, scalability and flexibility a Web Based SOA is adopted, in the areas like Enterprise Application Integration EAI. These days the Web Based Services, such as XML Web Services are not limited to fixed servers but can also be deployed on mobile devices in order to enhance the capability to become the service provider as well, such Web Services are known as Mobile Web Services MobWS. With the limited capabilities of mobile devices, the performance of XML based Mobile Web Services is affected due to the requirements of XML manipulation and parsing over the Representational State Transfer REST architecture. This Thesis work aims to develop and design a lightweight JSON Binding using the REST architecture. This will enhance the REST architecture to enable service creation and management for the synchronous as well as for the asynchronous Mobile Web Services MobWS. Initially, the existing synchronous and asynchronous server architecture is analysed to establish the foundation of the JSON Framework. Then the JSON Binding is developed in conformance with the analysed architecture. Therefore, the existing XML messaging constructs are redefined and optimized by using the JSON. Additionally JSON Binding developed in this work is used to enable service consumption in the IMS. This work is done by developing IMS client side modules in the middleware using Ericsson’s Mobile Java Communication Framework (MJCF). Finally the performance analyses have been done to evaluate and compare the impact of JSON Vs XML Binding over the synchronous as well as for the asynchronous server architecture. Thus, the architectural capability of the MobWS middleware has been customized to select the appropriate content type to handle and process the client requests.

Abstract:
Nowadays, the achievement of tasks made in groups has become a habitual concern by people. In this way, a rise of using and developing computer programs that support cooperative work process has been noted. The programs aim to provide productivity improvements on work made by groups. Integrating the software could result in increasing functionalities, augmenting both its use possibilities and flexibility. Integrated softwares have, in general, more features and use's potential than isolated applications. As a result, WS4CSCW (Web Services for Computer Supported Cooperative Work) -- a Web Service to assist CSCW application's integration was developed. WS4CSCW allows management of users, groups, resources, permissions, and user and group roles, by making available functionalities to applications for group work, making easy the integration among these applications and providing a straighter, more cohesive and consistent cooperation.

Abstract:
In addition to storing 70-75% of their data and business logic in legacy mainframe systems, global corporations have countless custom applications and off-the-shelf ERP products residing within their networks. Increasing competition and shrinking budgets have left managers scouring for innovative, cost-effective methods to maximize the potential of these enormous sunk costs. There is, as a result, an overwhelming need to not only web enable these existing legacy assets in order to quickly and cost-effectively deliver data to both customers and business partners alike, but also to amalgamate these disparate systems into a unified, homogeneous, real-time enterprise. Integration efforts to date, focused predominantly on the development of proprietary point-to-point adapters, have unfortunately proven to be a daunting task with countless failed projects and losses in the millions. The advent of XML web services does, however, have the potential to revolutionize existing integration strategies; the cost savings and ease of implementation associated with wrapping virtually all systems, past, present and future, with standardized, code-independent, data-centric interfaces is truly astounding. As the future success of this platform is, however, strictly dependent upon the interoperability of its endpoints, we have proposed several fundamental amendments to the existing flawed WSDL specification. A generic reference architecture, leveraging both this improved web services model as well as established component middleware technologies, is then proposed for the web enablement of legacy assets on an enterprise scale. In order to ensure the adoption of this methodology, a toolkit designed to automate the transformation has also been devised. This new paradigm will not only allow information to flow freely from deep within the enterprise, but will ultimately serve as the cornerstone of a new generation of enterprise integration solutions.

Abstract:

This thesis describes the development of a SOA-based architecture for integrating large EDI-using manufacturing companies purchasing processes with smaller non-EDI capable manufacturing companies, using online services.

The underlying need for this project lies with the fact that these small manufacturing companies risk to miss out on business, due to their inability to communicate via the industry standard EDI format. At the same time, getting EDI-capable involves significant investments in software licenses, connectivity services and consulting or training that these small companies may not be ready to make. The mentor company of this thesis project, System Andersson, produces resource planning software for this type of companies and would like to be able to provide them with an easy to use way of “jacking in” EDI support into their businesses, without having to make such significant investments. Ideally this feature would be developed as a standalone subscription based service that could be provided to users in such a way that their existing System Andersson software could connect to it and no further hard- or software would be needed on site. This EDI-enabling should be as easy as to be entirely transparent for the end-user companies. The task handed to the author was thus to develop an architecture for how such a subscription based service could be developed. Furthermore, in order to promote re-use and simplify development, the architecture was to be based on SOA concepts.

As a result of the project, such an architecture has been developed. The architecture details two services for translating and storing for later delivery a number of EDI message types of the EDIFACT variety. The architecture also specifies communications protocols (SOAP over HTTPS and AS2 over HTTPS) and APIs (web services) for how to communicate with these services. These specifications can be used to implement a system that performs the necessary integration, so that the smaller companies may indeed communicate via EDI.

The fitness of the developed architecture has been tested by implementing a prototype version of such a system based on it. It has also been validated by way of comparing to how well it adheres to SOA design principles. All in all, this design appears to be quite sound and presents a working solution to the studied problem.

Abstract:
Next Generation Networks (NGNs) aim to provide a unified network infrastructure to offer multimedia data and telecommunication services through IP convergence. NGNs utilize multiple broadband, QoS-enabled transport technologies, creating a converged packet-switched network infrastructure, where service-related functions are separated from the transport functions. This requires significant changes in the way how networks are managed to handle the complexity and heterogeneity of NGNs. This thesis proposes a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) based management framework that integrates heterogeneous management systems in a loose coupling manner. The key benefit of the proposed management architecture is the reduction of the complexity through service and data integration. A network management middleware layer that merges low level management functionality with higher level management operations to resolve the problem of heterogeneity was proposed. A prototype was implemented using Web Services and a testbed was developed using trouble ticket systems as the management application to demonstrate the functionality of the proposed framework. Test results show the correcting functioning of the system. It also concludes that the proposed framework fulfils the principles behind the SOA philosophy.

Abstract:
The ability to reach a wider public using the Internet has brought the world a wide varietyof online retailers offering their customers to purchase almost anything from the comfortof their home. With this increase in online retailing, a need for automation has been developedby the users. To be able to decrease the administrative tasks to a bare minimum allowsretailers to focus on their core business instead. With this new request for automation, businesssystems are becoming more and more popular and to be able to integrate the web sitewith a business system results in lower administrative workload. A variety of systems arealready available for the public to use for integrating a web shop to a number of differentbusiness systems. These systems are however often restrictive and will provide a frameworkfor developing the web shop themselves. One web content management system that lacksthis kind of support is SiteVision. On behalf of Soleil IT, a Proof of Concept was developedto investigate the feasibility of integrating a web shop developed in SiteVision, with a businesssystem for automation of administrative tasks. The implementation included featuressuch as retrieving products from the business system and displaying them on the web site, and the ability to purchase a set of products which should generate an order in the businesssystem. RESTful web services was used to transmit data between the business system andthe web shop. This project resulted in a successful integration of the business system VismaAdministration and a web shop developed in SiteVision. The project showed the feasibilityof performing such an integration and also exposed any restrictions that the setup may have.

Abstract:
The role of data warehouse for business analytics cannot be undermined for any enterprise, irrespective of its size. But the growing dependence on web services has resulted in a situation where the enterprise data is managed by multiple autonomous and heterogeneous service providers. We present our approach and its associated prototype DaWeS [Samuel, 2014; Samuel and Rey, 2014; Samuel et al., 2014], a DAta warehouse fed with data coming from WEb Services to extract, transform and store enterprise data from web services and to build performance indicators from them (stored enterprise data) hiding from the end users the heterogeneity of the numerous underlying web services. Its ETL process is grounded on a mediation approach usually used in data integration. This enables DaWeS (i) to be fully configurable in a declarative manner only (XML, XSLT, SQL, datalog) and (ii) to make part of the warehouse schema dynamic so it can be easily updated. (i) and (ii) allow DaWeS managers to shift from development to administration when they want to connect to new web services or to update the APIs (Application programming interfaces) of already connected ones. The aim is to make DaWeS scalable and adaptable to smoothly face the ever-changing and growing web services offer. We point out the fact that this also enables DaWeS to be used with the vast majority of actual web service interfaces defined with basic technologies only (HTTP, REST, XML and JSON) and not with more advanced standards (WSDL, WADL, hRESTS or SAWSDL) since these more advanced standards are not widely used yet to describe real web services. In terms of applications, the aim is to allow a DaWeS administrator to provide to small and medium companies a service to store and query their business data coming from their usage of third-party services, without having to manage their own warehouse. In particular, DaWeS enables the easy design (as SQL Queries) of personalized performance indicators. We present in detail this mediation approach for ETL and the architecture of DaWeS. Besides its industrial purpose, working on building DaWeS brought forth further scientific challenges like the need for optimizing the number of web service API operation calls or handling incomplete information. We propose a bound on the number of calls to web services. This bound is a tool to compare future optimization techniques. We also present a heuristics to handle incomplete information

With Service-oriented Architectures (SOA) companies are facing a paradigm shift towards services as the key unit of their enterprise architectures. An exploitation of the potential of Service-oriented Architectures is up to the applicability of semi-formal business models for a transformation into service compositions. However, several conceptual shortcomings prevent semi-formal models from being a suitable resource of an automated transformation process. Problems result from a multitude of modeling aims, objects, and procedures. Enhancements in order to solve these problems require both systematic preparation, and a methodical approach. This thesis provides a modeling method for business process-oriented SOA design using a meta-model based approach. An integrated modeling environment gives an overview of business requirements and allows appropriate assignment of SOA services to the business functions at the same time. The research refers to the example of process-oriented analysis and optimization of administrative procedures in German universities

Abstract:
Business process analysis and integration are key endeavours for today's enterprises. Recently, Web services have been widely adopted for the implementation and integration of business processes within and across enterprises. In this dissertation, we investigate the problem of enabling the analysis of service interactions, in today's enterprises, in the context of business process executions, and that of service integration. Our study shows that only fraction of interactions in the enterprise are supported by process-aware systems. However, enabling above-mentioned analyses requires: (i) a model of the underlying business process to be used as a reference for the analysis, and (ii) the ability to correlate events generated during service interactions into process instances. We refer to a process model and the corresponding process instances as a "process view". We propose the concept of process space to refer to all process related information sources in the enterprise, over which various process views are defined. We propose the design and development of a system called "process space discovery system" (PSDS) for discovering process views in a process space. We introduce novel approaches for the correlation of events into process instances, focusing on the public processes of Web services (business protocols), and also for the discovery of the business protocol models from the process instances of a process view. Analysis of service integration approaches shows that while standardisation in Web services simplifies the integration in the communication level, at the higher levels of abstractions (e.g., services interfaces and protocol models) services are still open to heterogeneities. We characterise the mismatches between service interfaces and protocol specifications and introduce "mismatch patterns" to represent them. A mismatch pattern also includes an adapter template that aims at the resolution of the captured mismatch. We also propose semi-automated approaches for identifying the mismatches between interface and protocol specifications of two services. The proposed approaches have been implemented in prototype tools, and experimentally validated on synthetic and real-world datasets. The discovered process views, using PSDS, can be used to perform various analyses in an enterprise, and the proposed adaptation approach facilitates the adoption of Web services in business process integration.

Integration and exchange of information across the Internet is a universally recognized need, in a wide variety of domains. Nowadays, the Web is the main source of information, providing many ways to access this content. However, making this information available to the user in an integrated way is still a challenge. New promising application fields such as Semantic Web Services can improve the integration process of data and processes available in Web portals. The goal of the present research is to accomplish the integration of the different functionalities offered by portals available in the Web, making use of domain ontologies through Semantic Web Services. In order to achieve the proposed goal, a search and integration system, named W-KIS, was designed and developed. The system provides the user with a unified and transparent view of the whole information available in a number of Web portals, related to a specific application domain. Two application domains were explored in this work through two case studies: the Biomedicine and the Geology, each one providing its own domain ontology. Semantic Web Services were designed to encapsulate Web portals in both domains, allowing the system to accomplish the integration in each domain, separately. The application proposed in this project was validated through the evaluation of its behavior in both domains, besides other tests with final users and comparisons with other approaches for integration in the Web, and traditional search engines. Making use of Semantic Web Services, W-KIS is able to find and execute the services in an automatic way, besides dealing with the semantic heterogeneity in the information sources by means of domain ontologies. This way, the system provides the user with information contextualized to its interest.

Abstract:
Information technology has woven itself into the fabric of every organization. As organizations grow and develop specialized needs, specialized software applications emerge to address the needs. Often the business processes take shape around the capabilities of the software applications and the technology infrastructure, until the two are inseparable from one another. When an organization decides to incorporate new processes or upgrade its information architecture, the new system may lack compatibility with the old system. The old, incompatible software is typically referred to as a "legacy application". In an effort to integrate the old applications with the new, organizations are typically faced with expensive, proprietary Enterprise Application Integration solutions. Fitting Out and Supply Support Assistance Center (FOSSAC) is an organization facing a legacy application integration challenge with the implementation of the Navy-Marine Corps Intranet. This thesis examines the applicability of traditional Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) methodologies for FOSSAC as way to preserve access to its legacy applications. As an alternative integration solution, this thesis explores the potential of the emerging Web Services architecture. The Web Services architecture employs standard Internet protocols to facilitate application integration and information sharing across a variety of computing-platforms.

Enterprises typically have their data spread over many software systems, such as custom made applications, CRM systems like SalesForce, CMS systems, or ERP systems like SAP. In these setting, it is often desired to integrate information from many data sources to accomplish some business goal in an application. Data may be stored locally or in the cloud in a wide variety of ways, demanding for explicit transformation processes to be defined, reason why it is hard for developers to integrate it. Moreover, the amount of external data can be large and the difference of efficiency between a smart and a naive way of retrieving and filtering data from different locations can be great. Hence, it is clear that developers would benefit greatly from language abstractions to help them build queries over heterogeneous data sources and from an optimization process that avoids large and unnecessary data transfers during the execution of queries. This project was developed at OutSystems and aims at extending a real product, which makes it even more challenging. We followed a generic approach that can be implemented in any framework, not only focused on the product of OutSystems.
