In recent years, we witnessed a huge growth of multimedia data on the Web. New lower-cost technologies and greater bandwidth allowed the Web to evolve into a multimedia format. However, the lack of tools that can make multimedia format easily accessible on the Web led us to a non-searchable and non-indexable data of the Web, also known as Deep Web. In line with these observations, this dissertation addresses the problem of how to publish audio and video content on the Web. We present a tool and a novel approach that facilitates the indexing and retrieval of the objects with the help of traditional search engines. The tool automatically generates static Web pages that describe the content of the objects and organize this content to facilitate locating segments of the audio or video which correspond to the descriptions. The static Web pages can be translated to others languages to reach other user populations. An annotation process is also performed to embed machine-readable data into the Web pages. The dissertation also presents an in-depth experiment, publishing learning objects based on audio and video, to assess the efficacy of the technique.

Abstract:
This work is concerned with the increasing relationships between two distinct multidisciplinary research fields, Semantic Web technologies and scholarly publishing, that in this context converge into one precise research topic: Semantic Publishing. In the spirit of the original aim of Semantic Publishing, i.e. the improvement of scientific communication by means of semantic technologies, this thesis proposes theories, formalisms and applications for opening up semantic publishing to an effective interaction between scholarly documents (e.g., journal articles) and their related semantic and formal descriptions. In fact, the main aim of this work is to increase the users' comprehension of documents and to allow document enrichment, discovery and linkage to document-related resources and contexts, such as other articles and raw scientific data. In order to achieve these goals, this thesis investigates and proposes solutions for three of the main issues that semantic publishing promises to address, namely: the need of tools for linking document text to a formal representation of its meaning, the lack of complete metadata schemas for describing documents according to the publishing vocabulary, and absence of effective user interfaces for easily acting on semantic publishing models and theories.

A distinction can be made between the electronic journal and a hypertext or hypermedia journal (throughout the rest of this paper the terms e-journal and h-journal will be used) that categorizes them as belonging to two different stages in the evolution of electronic documents [1 ]. While the e-journal contains unstructured text and mimics the print model of journal publication, the h-journal builds upon both. It contains structured text, hypertext, and incorporates notions of user centrality to document creation acknowledging thereby that certain kinds of electronic documents can also function as information systems.

Abstract:

Human beings have always aspired to share their thoughts with each other. Historical inventions such as letters, writing and, later, the printing press have served to underscore this basic need. With the advent of the Internet, and the World Wide Web, people can now reach a global audience in a cost-effective manner, with an almost insignificant barrier of entry.

Services such as blogs and online photo galleries allow users to share their content with their acquaintances or other people located around the world. A characteristic of the Web 2.0 revolution is that people are moving from a passive reader role to a more active one. Previously, the desktop was the only platform that could be used to publish content to the web; however, that is no longer the case.

With the advent of mobile devices, the sharing, and thus publishing of content, is moving steadily from the desktop to the mobile.

This move creates some challenges due to the constraints placed by the mobile platform. There are multiple kinds of mobile devices, each of them with its own capabilities and limitations.

In this thesis, different architectures are compared in order to find a proper design capable of providing an application environment conductive for mobile blogging. Such an environment carries a number of requirements on what it should facilitate. Some of these requirements are essential to enable publishing from the mobile, whereas other enhances the overall functionality of the service.

Two different prototypes have being implemented in order to evaluate theadvantages and drawbacks of the most useful architectures.

Abstract:
The World Wide Web is transitioning from being a mere collection of documents that contain useful information toward providing a collection of services that perform useful tasks. The emerging Web service technology has been envisioned as the next technological wave and is expected to play an important role in this recent transformation of the Web. By providing interoperable interface standards for application-to-application communication, Web services can be combined with component-based software development to promote application interaction and integration within and across enterprises. To make Web services for service-oriented computing operational, it is important that Web services repositories not only be well-structured but also provide efficient tools for an environment supporting reusable software components for both service providers and consumers. As the potential of Web services for service-oriented computing is becoming widely recognized, the demand for an integrated framework that facilitates service discovery and publishing is concomitantly growing. In our research, we propose a framework that facilitates Web service discovery and publishing by combining clustering techniques and leveraging the semantics of the XML-based service specification in WSDL files. We believe that this is one of the first attempts at applying unsupervised artificial neural network-based machine-learning techniques in the Web service domain. Our proposed approach has several appealing features: (1) It minimizes the requirements of prior knowledge from both service providers and consumers, (2) It avoids exploiting domain-dependent ontologies,(3) It is able to visualize the information space of Web services by providing a category map that depicts the semantic relationships among them,(4) It is able to semi-automatically generate Web service taxonomies that reflect both capability and geographic context, and(5) It allows service consumers to combine multiple search strategies in a flexible manner. We have developed a Web service discovery tool based on the proposed approach using an unsupervised artificial neural network and empirically evaluated the proposed approach and tool using real Web service descriptions drawn from operational Web services repositories. We believe that both service providers and consumers in a service-oriented computing environment can benefit from our Web service discovery approach.

Abstract:

The Department of Computer Science of Växjö University has a web based system where thesis finished by the students as well as available thesis can be seen. Research work made by the faculty members of the Department is also available here.

The Växjö University Library also has a web- based System called DiVA. DiVA stands for Digitala Vetenskapliga Arkivet (Academic Archive Online). It enables students and researchers to publish their research work to University Library. Students and Researchers can also search, research made by other researchers.

Each year researcher/student publishes their result in conference papers, journal articles, thesis report, books etc. These publications should be register both at the Växjö University Library and RICS (Research in Computer Science) web site in a systematic way so to avoid any kind of redundancy and errors. To develop a system which follow the principle” publish once and view every where” is the objective of this project.

The System makes it possible to extract the already published publication at DiVA and put that publication’s information into RICS web site.

When a user requests for registering a publication, the system should verify whether he/she is eligible to register a publication. If he/she qualifies, that is if he/she is a registered user, then the system will register the publication along with the required information like title, author, date of publication, kind of publication etc. on different Web sites.

The web-based publication information system was   implemented in C#.NET.

The project was successfully completed but the deliver system requires more live testing.

The aim of the present study is to describe the experiences of high school students as regards the effects of their activities, in and out of lessons, being published on the web. In addition, a further purpose is to acquire knowledge about whether a website could be used as means of increasing the students level of attention, and focus, to their activities in school; and, furthermore, how such a website should be designed to correspond with the students requests. The implemented methods are interviews with students, school administrators and teachers. A survey was conducted covering the student’s personal experiences and opinions. Furthermore, an interface test of the website was performed. Grades and absences from earlier students were also included in the study. According to the interviews the students experienced that they were affected by the increased level of attention but also that their fellow-students were more affected than they were themselves; and, furthermore, higher grades and fewer absences were registered. The study was conducted at a high school in Stockholm where courses in art and design, with concentrations in industrial design, architecture and urban planning are offered in the Technical Program. Altogether 62 students were included while doing their first year of a total of three years.

Abstract:
The transformations of equipment and computer systems, and therefore their introduction in various spheres of human activity have influenced the way society creates and communicates. Originating from these changes, the Internet and the World Wide Web have enabled a cultural distinct movement, by which it is also observed a textual production directed to the dissemination and consolidation of scientific knowledge. In this scientific context created by digital tools, some questions arise, namely: One can consider the existence of an emerging academic-scientific genre (the cyberarticle) in the context of the Web? Is there a production context adjusted for the production and dissemination of cyberarticles? What are these digital technological tools to produce cyberarticles? In view of this, this thesis aims to characterize the cyberarticle as an emerging academic genre on the Web. This research was based on Bakhtin (1992) and his macro analytic studies on the genres, and Marcuschi (1999; 2008; 2010), Koch (2010) and Xavier (2001; 2009; 2010), especially when they refer to the relationship between genres and digital tools. These theories have articulated to the contributions of Lévy (1993; 1996) on the Cyberspace, the Cyberculture and the virtuality; to the contributions of Tapscott (2010) and Prensky (2001a; 2001b) on the Digital Generation and the digital natives and immigrants, respectively; and finally, to the contributions of Berners-Lee (1996; 2001; 2006) and O´Reilly (2005) on the Web. For a better understanding of the communication process through scientific journals, the studies of Biojone (2003) have become fundamental for research presented in this thesis. The methodological approach is constituted by two procedures of data observation and data collection: first, there was a cataloging of scientific journals and articles oriented to online publication, giving greater focus to the publications of the Universidade Federal de Sergipe and to proposals for scientific publication different from traditional forms; in the second procedure, a experience for production of cyberarticles in the Ciencidade (www.ciencidade.com.br) was accomplished with the participation of the students and professors of the UFS. By analyzing the virtual scientific journals of Universidade Federal de Sergipe it was verified that the text is limited to the use of static images and normalized links (ABNT, journal) and/or links created automatically by virtual word processors, which makes it a traditional scanned article. Moreover, in respect to proposals for different forms of publishing, along with the materials collected from the experience in the Ciencidade, it was clear that the production of cyberarticles is possible since there is a context that stimulates such production of cyberarticles. Thus, the cyberarticle can be considered an emerging academic and scientific genre in the context of the Web, because it is different from the genre of traditional scientific article due to the fact that it is characterized by integration of different languages and tools made possible by digital technology.

Lindoo, Edward C. "The Future of Newspapers A Study of the World Wide Web And Its Relationship to electronic Publishing of Newspaper." NSUWorks, 1998. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/672.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects that the World Wide Web (Web) is having on newspaper publishing. With the development of the Web, more than 4,000 electronic publishers have created Web sites, and are now in competition, not only with each other, but also with traditional media such as newspaper, magazines, radio and television. Due to a variety of factors, including advertisers expanding into Web markets, newspaper publishers perceive this new competition to be not only the most immediate, but also the most serious, systemic, long-term threat to traditional newspaper publishing to date. Therefore, the goal of this dissertation was to study the development of electronic newspapers, to ascertain how newspapers are currently using the World Wide Web, to suggest how new technologies, such as the Web, might be used by newspaper companies in the future to keep their share of the information dissemination marketplace, and to draw conclusions as to the importance of the Web to newspapers, now, and in the future. Millions of dollars have been spent by newspapers to get their product on the Web, and millions more will be spent to keep their presence on the Web. However, few publishers are making money on the Web, and some have ceased Web operations, almost as quickly as they started. Through the implementation of a survey, questions such as profitability, staffing, pricing, promotion, and Subscriptions were answered. Ultimately, this information can be used by newspaper publishers to enhance their Web product as they move into the future. The success of this project was based on the literature review, the results of the survey, and the final analysis, which has put into perspective where the electronic publishing industry is today, and what newspaper publishers need to do in the future to remain competitive, while maintaining their share of the market. Although the literature contained much hype about the Web, the final results of this paper show that the newspaper industry, as a whole, is not in as much danger as most publishers fear. And because most newspapers have created Web sites, they have positioned themselves well to fight off competition.

Abstract:
Every scientific research begins with a literature review that includes an extensive bibliographic search. Such searches are known to be difficult and time-consuming because of the vast amount of topical material existing in today's ever-changing technology base. Keeping up-to-date with related literature and being aware of the most recent publications require extensive time and effort. The need for a WWW-based software tool for collecting and providing access to this scientific body of knowledge is undeniable. The study explained herein deals with this problem by developing an efficient, advanced, easy-to-use tool, WebBiblio, that provides a globally accessible WWW environment enabling the collection and dissemination of searchable bibliographies comprised of abstracts and keywords. This thesis describes the design, structure and features of WebBiblio, and explains the ideas and approaches used in its development. The developed system is not a prototype, but a production system that exploits the capabilities of the WWW. Currently, it is used to publish three VV&T bibliographies at the WWW site: http://manta.cs.vt.edu/biblio. With its rich set of features and ergonomically engineered interface, WebBiblio brings a comprehensive solution to solving the problem of globally collecting and providing access to a diverse set of bibliographies.

Abstract:
The automation of the discovery, composition and invocation of Web Services is an important step to the success of the Semantic Web. If no single Web Service satisfies the functionality required by one user, an alternative is to combine existing services that solve parts of the problem in order to reach a complete solution. Web Services composition can be achieved manually or automatically. When composing services manually, Web Service developers can take advantage of their expertise and knowledge about the composition services and the target service. This thesis addresses issues and presents contributions related to the process of automating Web Services composition. The automatic composition of Web services requires the description and publication of the services in order to model the necessary knowledge (explicit semantics) that the developer uses to perform the manual composition. The automatic Web Service discovery is a crucial step toward the automatic composition, because it is a previous stage necessary to the selection of composition service candidates. Semantic Web Services researches explore the use of the Semantic Web technologies to enrich the Web Services descriptions with explicit semantics. Three main lines of investigation are adopted in this thesis to explore the process of automatic composition of Web Services. They are the following: Semantic Web Services modeling; automatic discovery of Semantic Web Services; and automatic composition of Semantic Web Services. Full text
Abstract:
This research investigates the complexities of artistic authorship under the production conditions of the web. It is driven by a fascination with the possibilities of expanding the authorial sphere of the artwork to include the productive capacities of other subjectivities, entities and processes. I offer the neologism ‘extra-subjectivity’ to reflect on this emerging form of production, in which the ultimate manifestation of the artwork often exceeds the author’s intentions. As well as the written thesis, it comprises seven artworks that represent a distinctive approach characterized by playfulness, humour and the use of generative computational processes. Several early works explore my authorial agency in relation to algorithmically generated variations of texts, including William Blake’s poem The Fly and the song Puff the Magic Dragon. Later, algorithmic generation is combined with the appropriation of content shared on social media, as in Infinite Violets, which displays variations of a Shakespearean verse along with images from Flickr. I draw on digital sociological methods to create a hybrid approach in which the web is understood as an evolving medium made up of digital objects and devices that can be repurposed for art practice. This approach underpins 'Flickr Nude or Noodle Descending a Staircase', which uses images programmatically accessed through Flickr’s application programming interface to remake a Marcel Duchamp painting for the web. 'Selfie Portrait' displays Instagram photographs tagged with ‘Selfie’ alongside users’ biographical information, which drives the ‘Copyright Episode’, an extended account of the legal contexts surrounding web-based art practices. Here, I demonstrate how such practices are entangled socially, ethically and legally with the distinct production conditions of the web. I argue that authorship is a question of responsibility as well as ‘ownership’, which is why ethics are as important as the law.

Abstract:
The World Wide Web offers individual writers new possibilities for producing and distributing fiction. This dissertation begins with an in-depth look at who these writers are, what they are doing and the advantages and disadvantages the Web has compared to traditional publishing venues. The common goals of these writers and the various ties which bind them suggests that a community of writers has developed on the Web. No community exists in isolation, however, so the dissertation also looks at some of the other forces at work in society which may have an effect on this community. Transnational entertainment conglomerates, for instance, are attempting to change the underlying structure of the technology in order to reap potentially great profits from it; their efforts may result in diminishing the ability of individual writers to use the Web to effectively distribute their work. Governments, to use another example, can affect the way individuals use the medium by enacting laws restricting certain categories of content online or developing copyright laws which favour the interests of large entertainment producing corporations. Finally, writers publishing on the Web may have a disintermediating effect on traditional print publishing, with ramifications for, among others, publishing houses and bookstores. What emerges in this dissertation is a portrait of the complex web of relationships between individual and institutional stakeholders in this developing technology.

Full text
Abstract:
Documentary production in a professional context often involves a revising process in which documents need to be proofread before validation and publication. This important task faces new challenges when dealing with digital documents. Indeed, three features of digital writing are problematic: documents evolve very frequently and cannot be proofread each time as a whole; interactions provided by hypertexts make the task laborious or even impossible; document repurposing increases the views of content to proofread. As an advanced digital writing technology, XML publishing chains are a relevant framework for studying proofreading of digital documents. Observing that the views of content proposed by publishing chains, namely the generative views (XML sources that can be modified through a WYSIWYM editor) and the published views (documents obtained by transformation of the XML sources), are not adapted for proofreading, we consider designing new views of content dedicated for this activity based on two approaches: linearization, which consists in restoring some material linearity among contents; and tabulation, which aims at parallelizing different repurposing contexts so that they can be better compared. Part of the contribution presented here has led to the development of prototypes that have been experimented in the use of Scenari publishing chains in a pedagogical context. These prototypes rely on linear proofreading views allowing in particular the comparison between two versions of the document based on a diff algorithm

Navas, Fernández Miguel. "Spanish scientific journals in Web of Science and Scopus Adoption of Open Access, relationship between price and impact, and internationality." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/401332.

Full text
Abstract:
This doctoral thesis focuses on active Spanish scholarly journals which follow internationally‐recognized quality standards, in order to analyze their main features, study the adoption of Open Access, observe the relationship between their price and bibliometric impact, and examine its internationality characteristics. Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus have been selected as the sources for identifying the journals. After depurating mistakes, a final list of 445 journals has resulted. A set of indicators has been defined and all data has been collected from the journals’ primary source (website or hard copy). Correlations and association tests have been carried out to explore relationships among variables. The population of Spanish journals indexed in WoS and Scopus grew steadily over the last years: there were 300 titles by 2012, 406 by 2013 and 445 by 2015. A 69.7% of these were launched after 1980 and their average age is 30 years. This selection of This selection of 445 journals stands for a 25% of journals published in Spain, but the subject areas are not equally distributed - Science, Technology and Medicine fields (STM) are overrepresented, while Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) appear less frequently. Indeed, 84% of all journals concentrate in only three of the seven subject areas considered for this study – 35% on Social S., 32% on Health S. and 18% on Arts & Humanities. Universities and research centers (mostly the Spanish National Research Council, CSIC) publish 43% of the journals. To run their publishing services, most of them use OJS platforms (34% of the total population). They publish mostly on Arts & Humanities (in Spanish language) and Social Sciences. Online‐only format and free access are their favorite output. Commercial publishers are the second in importance, accounting for the 32% of the journals. They focus on Health Sciences and run most of the few free‐access journals with APCs. They also account for most of the few hybrid journals, which are usually published in English. Elsevier is the largest commercial publisher, publishing about 17% of all the journals in this study. Scientific societies, professional associations and other not‐for‐profit private institutions publish 21% of the journals. They own or participate in another 24% of the journals, which are published by companies like Elsevier. Indeed, their scientific participation is crucial, reaching almost half of the population studied (45%). Government agencies publish only a 4% of all the journals. As to languages, almost half of the journals (47%) are published only in Spanish. Nonetheless, 26% are published both in Spanish and English, and 18% only in English. Remaining languages are residual. Free access is the most common type of publication (64.5%), followed by restricted (16.6%), embargo (14.4%) and hybrid (4.5%). Free‐access is associated with academic publishers and Social Sciences, while restricted‐access and hybrid journals are more common among companies and usually refer to STM fields. Open Access, as measured by free access with self‐archiving permissions, results in 56.9% of the total of journals. This indicates a sustained increase according to previous studies. Article Processing Charges (APCs) are beginning to be introduced in Spain, but only in 7% of these journals. Both free‐access and hybrid journals charging APCs are associated with commercial publishers, English language and high bibliometric impact rates. Annual subscription prices are much higher for STM, commercial companies and English language content, but the difference is lower when using price per article, because expensive journals usually provide more scientific content. APC prices are on average ten times higher in hybrid titles than in free‐access ones. Impact Factor (IF, which is only available for 27% of the studied journals), Scimago Journal Rank (SJR) and Source‐Normalized Impact per Paper (SNIP) have in general higher impact values for STM fields, journals with APCs and journals published in English. While the highest IFs usually appear in journals issued by commercial publishers, highest SNIPs are related to journals published by associations and societies. Subscription prices, both at volume and article level, have no relationship with any impact indicator. On the contrary, APC prices correlate moderately with impact indicators, but only with SJR and SNIP, not with IF. English language, foreign‐authored articles, international collaborations and foreign members at scientific teams have been identified and measured as elements that indicate internationality. Except for international collaborations, with very few appearances (especially in Arts & Humanities), all elements have global averages of around 33%, although they vary depending on subject areas and access types. The English language is most common in STM fields, journals published by companies and journals charging APCs. Foreign authors are more present in Health Sciences and Mathematics & Physics, and journals with APCs. The proportion of foreign experts is similar to that of foreign authors’, but with smoother differences among categories – also, they are lower in Health Sciences and higher in Engineering. Academic publishers usually include more members from foreign institutions than the rest. Internationality elements present a similar pattern, especially as far as the participation of foreign authors and foreign experts is concerned. Limitations of the study, future research lines and final considerations are provided.

Abstract:
Today semantic web technologies and Linked Data principles are providing formalism, standards, shared data semantics and data integration for unstructured data over the web. The result is a transformation from theWeb of Interaction to theWeb of Data and actionable information. On the crossroad lies our daily lives, containing plethora of unstructured data which is originating from low cost sensors and appliances to every computational element used in our modern lives, including computers, interactive watches, mobile phones, GPS devices etc. These facts accentuate an opportunity for system designers to combine these islands of data into a large actionable information space which can be utilized by automated and intelligent agents. As a result, this phenomenon is likely to institute a space that is smart enough to provide humans with comfort of living and to build an efficient society. Thus, in this context, the focus of my research has been to propose solutions to the problems in the domains of smart environment and energy management, under the umbrella of ambient intelligence. The potential role of semantic web technologies in these proposed solutions has been analysed and architectures for these solutions were designed, implemented and tested.

This report describes how today's technological processes look like in the production of applications for interactive publications. An interactive publication is a digitally created magazine with an extra layer of information that you can interact with. Examples of interactivity is slideshows and video and data streams in real time that are displayed directly in the magazine. The report focuses on what it is that adds value to a digital interactive publication, and what functions which may provide cause to this. Through a comparative analysis of digital publications and the newspapers, four designaspects have been developed as an basis for how the interactive elements should be handled in the production of digital publications.  A prototype of an interactive publication was developed to show how the designaspects can be applied and to show how information can be presented in a more interactive way.

Background: Patients diagnosed with melanoma frequently search the internet for treatment information, including novel and complex immunotherapy. However, health literacy is limited among half of the German population, and no assessment of websites on melanoma treatment has been performed so far. Objective: The aim of this study was to identify and assess the most visible websites in German language on melanoma immunotherapy. Methods: In accordance with the common Web-based information-seeking behavior of patients with cancer, the first 20 hits on Google, Yahoo, and Bing were searched for combinations of German synonyms for “melanoma” and “immunotherapy” in July 2017. Websites that met our predefined eligibility criteria were considered for assessment. Three reviewers independently assessed their quality by using the established DISCERN tool and by checking the presence of quality certification. Usability and reliability were evaluated by the LIDA tool and understandability by the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT). The Flesch Reading Ease Score (FRES) was calculated to estimate the readability. The ALEXA and SISTRIX tools were used to investigate the websites’ popularity and visibility. The interrater agreement was determined by calculating Cronbach alpha. Subgroup differences were identified by t test, U test, or one-way analysis of variance. Results: Of 480 hits, 45 single websites from 30 domains were assessed. Only 2 website domains displayed a German quality certification. The average assessment scores, mean (SD), were as follows: DISCERN, 48 (7.6); LIDA (usability), 40 (2.0); LIDA (reliability), 10 (1.6); PEMAT, 69% (16%); and FRES, 17 (14), indicating mediocre quality, good usability, and understandability but low reliability and an even very low readability of the included individual websites. SISTRIX scores ranged from 0 to 6872 and ALEXA scores ranged from 17 to 192,675, indicating heterogeneity of the visibility and popularity of German website domains providing information on melanoma immunotherapy. Conclusions: Optimization of the most accessible German websites on melanoma immunotherapy is desirable. Especially, simplification of the readability of information and further adaption to reliability criteria are required to support the education of patients with melanoma and laypersons, and to enhance transparency.

Abstract:

Thesis, Rennes 1, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014REN1G005/document.

Abstract:
The rise of journalism at an industrial scale from the XIXth century was mainly based upon the economic alliance between several interests and investments sources, and which are now challenged in the digital economy context. This research aims at contributing to a better understanding of the contemporary transformations of this practice of discursive production, together with changes taking place within media organizations as well as strategies and discourses at stake. In both France and Quebec, this research focus on two media groups, Ouest-France and Québecor, notably involved in newspapers, and confronted with digital issues since the mid-1990s. Both business models and stakeholders interests are changing, while journalism does not manage to ensure economic independence. Its subordination position is somewhat reinforced through models and apparatuses gradually rolled out. This ongoing transformation is built through both organizational changes and discourse. This doctoral research was based on cross-Empirical approaches, using document analysis within and around the two groups, as well as discourse analysis. The latter was based in particular on interviews with executives, managers and information workers. This research design and the junction of these approaches reveal that the transformation of journalism and its economy appears not as mere goal to com, but as a process already at work. By leaving some records and traces, covered by this doctoral work, this transformation builds as well upon investments and discourses

Abstract:
This, the first study at doctoral level of any white female jazz instrumentalist, provides an overview to the long, active and enduring musical career of British-born, New York-based jazz pianist, Marian McPartland (born 1918). For over six decades, besides being a pianist and a composer, she has been prominent in the professional roles of educator, writer, record producer and recording artist, radio broadcaster and advocate. The scope and impact of this multi-layered career are conveyed through the medium of a Website profiling significant aspects of her professional life through textual, aural and visual presentation. Although not claiming to be exhaustive, this Website brings together a comprehensive collection of data covering all aspects of Marian McPartland's career. Data have been gathered and collated from material in the public domain, and all such sources are acknowledged and referenced. The Website is navigable through three links at the bottom of the Home Page - 1) Historical Perspective; 2) Selected Analyses; and 3) Marian McPartland In Context. Part One of the Website provides access to Marian McPartland's various professional roles in jazz, as well as public profiles, and is consolidated by listings of support material. Part Two of the Website contains formal analyses of four of her compositions, each preceded by a short introduction. The analyses are based on scores transcribed from her recorded improvisations. A discussion of her stylistic approach follows the analyses. Part Three of the Website contextualizes Marian McPartland as a woman in jazz during its major historical and stylistic movements. An Introduction and a Conclusion provide the academic framework for this study. The Introduction outlines the rationale for the study, the dimensions of the study, the methodologies used, and the research process. The Conclusion provides critical commentary on Marian McPartland's musical career, and deductions are made about her significance in and contribution to jazz, based on the evidence presented in the Website. A CD of the entire Website completes the presentation of this thesis, included under Supplementary Material in the back pocket of the thesis. This overview of Marian McPartland's entire career makes an original contribution to knowledge on this jazz artist, and, in a broader sense, provides an important resource for future research in the area of jazz music and musicians.

Chandra, Smita, and Vivek Patkar. "ICTS: A catalyst for enriching the learning process and library services in India." Elsevier, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/106060.

Full text
Abstract:
The advances in ICTs have decisively changed the library and learning environment. On the one hand, ICTs have enhanced the variety and accessibility to library collections and services to break the barriers of location and time. On the other, the e-Learning has emerged as an additional medium for imparting education in many disciplines to overcome the constraint of physical capacity associated with the traditional classroom methods. For a vast developing country like India, this provides an immense opportunity to provide even higher education to remote places besides extending the library services through networking. Thanks to the recent initiatives by the public and private institutions in this direction, a few web-based instruction courses are now running in the country. This paper reviews different aspects of e-Learning and emerging learning landscapes. It further presents the library scene and new opportunities for its participation in the e-Learning process. How these ICTs driven advances can contribute to the comprehensive learning process in India is highlighted.
