Hsu, Michael. "The design and implemtation of a prototype web-portal for the integrated mobile alerting system (IMAS)." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/2746.

Full text
Abstract:
The Integrated Mobile Alert System (IMAS) is a mobile device message alerting system that provides a means for people to stay connected and receive information in a modality that is constantly available to them. The focus of this research is to develop a proof of concept for the common data format and common platform aspect of the proposed architecture. This project concentrates on the design characteristics of the IMAS-portal and server-side database. The thesis determines a way to aggregate, integrate, and sort different message formats in order to be easily displayed on a variety of mobile devices according to user profiles. It demonstrates that a web-portal written in PHP script supported by a relational database is a good configuration for IMAS. Additionally, a proof of concept system that converts messages into disseminated mobile alerts is presented. This thesis marks the founding steps in developing the IMAS.

Abstract:
Web portals are considered “gateways” to the World Wide Web. These portals are becoming very popular entry points to the Web by offering important services such as email, news, weather reports, course notes and general information. In addition, some portal sites allow users the option of customising the site according to their personal interests. However, disabled and elderly people encounter many accessibility and usability barriers while accessing web portals. A preliminary review of a university portal was conducted to identify some of these accessibility problems. This treatise presents an overview of the processes to be followed when conducting an accessibility and usability evaluation. In addition, it mentions some guidelines to be considered when specifically designing portals for use by many different users from varying backgrounds.

Abstract:
Internet portals are increasingly becoming a primary source of information. A portal is a gateway to information on the Internet or a hub from which users may locate relevant information (Strauss, 2000). Because university Web sites have various user classes, universities are beginning to adopt the portal concept for their Web sites. The study conducted aimed to determine the effect of tailoring information content and presentation style on a university Web portal. User ratings of information design on three metrics and user task performance measures of time and errors were compared for four prototypes. Three prototypes were built on the basis of user requirements and two Human-computer Interaction (HCI) theories and one was a replica of an existing academic information portal. The three metrics were derived from the HCI theories. The contributions of the study are a determination of user acceptance of and user performance with the tailored presentation styles and three metrics derived from HCI theories that can be used to compare alternative information presentation styles for portals. An important contribution is the remote data collection technique that was used in the study and a time-stamping technique that recorded clicks on hyperlinks.

Abstract:
This research is to propose a Web services based framework for e-learning portal systems designed to present a flexible integration model and to make the e-learning environment intelligent and adaptive to each individual learner. It is very important that all the learning components and applications are clearly defined, effectively discovered and loosely coupled. Web services and Portals provide an essential deployment environment to realize collaborative e-learning environment by facilitating efficient communication of components and applications. Given the proposed framework, instructor and learner will be able to use their learning objects or services based on portal (collaboration environment) universally anywhere, any time through common communication protocols (HTTP, SOAP). The key values of interoperability and accessibility in the proposed architecture enhance the future collaborative e-learning portal systems to communicate more efficiently and to share data more easily. A prototype of the proposed system is designed and implemented in a J2EE (Java 2 Enterprise Edition) combined with multi-channel, using WSRP (Web Service for Remote Portlet) for building essential Web services and for parsing SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) messages on lightweight platforms. The implementation is a successful demonstration that learning services can be easily accessed by portlet through standard Web services interface. Another implementation about role base access control is presented. An internationalization solution (I18N, L10N) based web-service e-learning portal system is successfully accomplished in this implementation.

Abstract:
The complexity in the construction industry with multiple stakeholdersinvolved during a project create a demand for good communication. Theinformation channel between contractor and customer with relevant andupdated information is important for success in a project. Manual handlingof the information can lead to loss of important information due to thehuman factor. This master thesis deals with the development of a prototype for a customerportal for the construction division at BDX Företagen AB. The aim of theproject was to create a user-friendly and intuitive customer portal to eliminateadministrative burdensome tasks. The project followed an activity-centered approach with a base in designthinking with the phases planning, inspiration, ideation and prototype & test. The phases were iterative and consisted of brainstorming, co-designworkshop, user testing and prototyping. The focus was to understand theuser’s needs in relation to the functions that needed to exist for the system towork optimal. Users were involved during the project from creating arequirement specification to user test of the final prototype. Further toachieve this, relevant theories in user experience, design, gestalt and layoutprinciples were researched in the literature review. The project resulted in two user-friendly and intuitive prototypes for acustomer portal, a mobile and computer version for the different screen size. The customer portal includes relevant project information, ordering of a newproject and changing settings for the user. The interface is associated withBDX and their colours but in a new setting.
Abstract:
The objective of this thesis project focuses on designing and implementing a game portal for web-based motion games whilst achieving high usability. Many systems lack the creativ- ity to design web-usability with all the technical requirements and this study addresses this problem by implementing a front-end system that uses agile methodology with competitive analysis and consumes the back-end system with RESTful architecture by using AngularJS web application framework. Users were involved in the implementation process repetitively and the usability test was done with think aloud protocol and System Usability Scale which involves a questionnaire on paper. It was concluded that a clear and interactive navigation bar made it very useful for users to hover through the website. Having the notifications fixed on the upper right side of the navigation bar made them easily perceived by the users and including all user-related functions under username helped the user reach them easily. It was also concluded that modal view prevented page reloading by gathering users, attention at one point. Adding visual feedback functions such as highlighting the hovered or clicked link were appreciated by the users.

ABSTRACT: This work on the area of Web interfaces was motivated by the limited number of available support services to higher education as main management tools of educational contents. The study carried out about the understanding of the new social software proved complex due to the series of commercial and technological influences, which restrict it, specially the Web, as a means of support for these activities. The main tools, which provided the development of a new social sphere on the net were studied. This sphere, named Web 2.0, led to focus this project on the scope of Interaction Design in the definition of the behavioural and constructional domain of a tool, which supports both teaching and learning at the higher education. Due to its complexity, we opted to divide the project into subprojects. To this dissertation belong both the definition of integrator graphic scenery within the general scope of the project and the interlocution of construction processes of visual messages, defined by other areas in the project. Since its foundation the project named Sapo Campus has received influence by a commercial and institutional strategic view, which defined a structural model previously developed. In this way, the philosophy of this dissertation in the conceptual definition of interfaces focused on systematizing the identity and language of SAPO services, which are used as means of support to some services of Sapo Campus platform. The design of a new identity order of services comprises three domains: the graphic, structural and navigation. These three areas served both as approach fields to the project and as analysis fields to SAPO services. In this document, besides developing the referred topics, we describe above all a narrative about the conceptual development from the thoughtful order, already limited by a structural predefinition, to the possible order, consequent of the implementation and of the organizational constraints linked to the complexity of such a project. Still about the three domains initially defined, we made the evaluation of the interfaces basing on a limited sample of participants who define the profile of visual literacy above the average of most users of the service, enabling the motivation and definitions of new possibilities toward future developments.

Herrmann, Marc-Julian. "How to re-design Supply Chains more effective when a web sales portal is applied? : Based on a web-sales implementation plan of Spare Parts in the Industrial Electronics Industry."

Full text
Abstract:
The following thesis counteracts the relationship of Supply Chain Design (SCD) and web-sales[1], and concentrates on the overall aim of “How to re-design Supply Chains more effective when a web sales portal is applied?”. In order to clarify this aim, following four research objectives are set: How does e-commerce connect to Supply Chain Design in general? What is required for a successful implementation of e-commerce? What are the costs and benefits by implementing e-commerce? Which potential risk factors in correspondence of the implementation of             e-commerce may influence the whole SCD and e-commerce interaction process?  Previous studies have not discussed the interaction of e-commerce and supply chain design on operational level at all, which accounts for a large portion of interests these days. When looking at the research objectives they have been solved in three process steps. First of all the general connection of e-commerce and Supply Chain Design had been analysed through an extensive literature review in form of i.e. suitable books and research papers. Results demonstrated that e-commerce helps to support and manage supply chain activities by offering relevant information. The connection between e-commerce and SCD insists of a close gearing. E-commerce helps to support and manage supply chain activities by offering relevant information about what kind of product is demanded, what is available in warehouses, which products are in the manufacturing processes, and which products will enter the physical facilities and customer sites. Following, research objectives two to four had been identified for which a literature review has created a firm basis on the status quo of current research studies. Combined with findings of developing a web-sales implementation plan for a leading group in power and automation technologies this work-out has been used as empirical research on how a real life company is carrying out these objectives. This plan had been worked out on-side the company, data has been obtained through interviews, observations, and internal system data. Requirements for a successful implementation of e-commerce are seen in strategic and organisational planning activities, as well as specific platform conditions. Concerning costs and benefits, monitoring and evaluating improvements, increasing customer satisfaction, and reducing order-cycle times stay in contrast to incidental fixed and variable costs which had been demonstrated through a detailed break-even analysis. Potential risk factors which had been identified can be countervailed through an appropriate risk management. Thirdly, the overall research question of “How to re-design Supply Chains more effective when a web sales portal is applied?” had been solved based on intermediate results of step one and two, combined with the project work-out, providing informative and sufficient data. The result is that in a first step a clear picture of which products and spare parts will be sold has to be defined. Secondly a precisely inventory management - discussing which parts to hold in stock, where to stock them, and how much to hold in stock - needs to be worked out. And thirdly, after analysing the possible and most plausible inventory strategy, possible distribution varieties need to be analysed. The most appropriate solution for the case company is represented in an Inventory-Distribution-Matrix. This research study has created a basis for the business unit of Power Electronics to improve possible efficiency. The knowledge and implementation steps operated for this implementation plan can be used for other business units in Switzerland and can be seen as a decision maker. Therefore this work-out has generated an enormous benefit for the case company. Instead of acting instinctively, decisions are based on qualitative and quantitative methodologies, data collection methods and data analysis techniques, and therefore follow a process strategy. [1]“Web-sales” in this context is associated with selling and buying information, products, or services via computer networks (Strader & Shaw, 1997), in this research study it is identical to “E-commerce”.

Sundström, Sofia, and Elinor Thelander. "Designing a user interface for web based project managment in film production." Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Science and Technology, 2004. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-2403.

Full text
Abstract:

The aim of this thesis project is to create a user interface for a web based film production project management portal. This implies creating a site map and a functionality specification based on the needs of the people working in the film production industry. The project was made on account of The Chimney Pot, a post production company in Stockholm. For the scope of this project, the research was concentrated on the part of film production that concerns The Chimney Pot, i.e. the procedures that take place after a film has been recorded. The research also focused on people working in the area of Stockholm, even if their clients and customers in other areas of Sweden and abroad were indirectly included in order for the project portal to be a usable tool in projects where these people are involved.

Before any visible results can be seen in a web production project, a range of preparation steps needs to be taken. Planning is essential if the final product shall work properly. Extensive research has to be done into the industry. In order to make the product usable, the intended users, their requirements, work procedures and environment need to be examined. Only when there are substantial results and enough knowledge about the industry, the actual implementation can start. The first step is to make a functionality specification, next a site map should be produced and the technical architecture should be specified. These are the areas that are covered in this project, but there are also recommendations about how the further development should be made. Important aspects in the next phase are to create a budget, to put together a development team and to create a graphic user interface. In the whole process the issues of usability need to be considered, i.e. efficiency, flexibility, learnability and satisfaction.

The key requirements for the project portal turned out to be speed and effectiveness. The user interface was designed to be intuitive and to be shallow, which means that the user should be able to perform any task with the least amount of mouse clicks possible. Another intention with the produced user interface is for it to be clearly divided into the four main areas that could be extracted from the user requirements. They are planning, project details, communication and file sharing. Directly after logging on to the project portal, the user should get an overview of all these areas. Other important considerations were security, version control and seamlessness. These issues demand a thorough planning of the technical architecture and this thesis provides some useful tips for the further development of the technical specification.

Abstract:
When creating a user interface, a developer should base their work on a number of design principles. This enables an effective user flow, where the user navigates through the system without difficulties. Thereby the user can absorb the information that the system provides to the fullest.   These design principles form the basis of the practical work that was carried out for this report. The purpose was to develop a web portal, which was used by a company for collaboration with its suppliers. By basing the development on the principles, as well as interviews with the users, improvements were to be made on the current system. This should result in a better user experience and an optimal efficiency of the system.   The practical work was divided into two stages. The first stage involved concrete changes on the current system, where smaller adjustments were introduced that could easily be implemented on the current web portal. The second stage was about an analysis of the market's leading design solutions, which should show existing smart and up-to-date solutions that could be used to improve the system. These steps constituted the process of improvement work that was to be carried out on the web portal.   The result was a user interface that satisfies the majority of users. Through the objective design principles a user friendly system with an efficient user flow was created.

This study aims to evaluate the Espírito Santo Federal University Student’s Portal, identifying factors associated with usability that affect the perception of information quality and differentiating user groups according to the usability of the Portal. To this end, a survey was performed through a questionnaire applied to its users, with predominantly quantitative approach. The profile of the students, besides the context in which they use the Portal and also how they evaluate the reports and activities were described here. From the model developed in this study, which comprised six usability dimensions (learnability, memorability, efficiency, satisfaction, errors support and utility), it was found that, except the learnability, the remaining dimensions are statistically significant in the perception of information quality, being satisfaction the most influential dimension. Through the cluster analysis, based on assessments of the factors associated with meeting of expectations and the results of the use of the website (satisfaction, efficiency and utility), three groups were identified: the first group of students that best assessed these factors as well as activities, reports and information quality of the Portal; the second which evaluated moderately; and the third one which rated worse. By simple regression using the average of the usability dimensions, it was also found that the information quality is strongly correlated (r = 0.7) with the usability of the Portal, having a predictive power of 49%. Responses were also obtained about what was more confusing and suggestions for improvements helped to formulate, in conjunction with other analyzes, the proposals of the Intervention Plan. Although it still has deficiencies, on a scale 0-5, the Portal was rated above average in the satisfaction dimension (3.42), as well as achieved obtained a general average of 3.31 in quality of information and 3.69 in usability. Thus, the results indicate that it has fulfilled its function.

Abstract:
Introduction: There is an urgent need to find new ways of improving the quality and safety of healthcare whilst achieving efficiencies of service. E-health technologies offer exciting opportunities to support patients in managing chronic disease. Following continuous advances and increasing use, the Internet provides an ideal platform to empower patients. Previous studies have demonstrated that people taking a more active role in managing their health, experience improved outcomes. Based on these principles and funded by Crohn's and Colitis UK, a new web-based care package was designed for adults with inflammatory bowel disease. Specifically 'My IBD Portal' aimed to provide greater access to information, improved communication and encourage greater engagement. Following its implementation at a single centre NHS Trust, the new IBD patient portal was evaluated in the clinical setting. Methods: Following a literature review and significant patient involvement, 'My IBD Portal' was designed and implemented within a single centre setting. The system was evaluated over a 6-month period using a pre-post observational designed study. The primary objective was to examine patient experience. Usage, usability and satisfaction were measured. Secondary objectives included assessing factors that predicted use, analysed using logistic regression models. Changes in IBD knowledge, patient engagement, medication adherence and health utilisation were also explored using univariate analysis and multiple regression models. Results: 183 participants enrolled in the 6-month observational study. 63.4% of participants visited the IBD Portal more than once and were defined as users. In total there were 2080 individual visits to the Portal. The mean number of logins was 11.4 (SD 21.5) and median 3 (IQR 1-12). The mean duration of each visit was over 5 minutes. Individual use was highly variable. Approximately a quarter of participants never or only once used the IBD Portal, with an equal proportion visiting over 10 times. Satisfaction amongst users was high. 98% of respondents were either satisfied or very satisfied. 90% perceived the IBD Portal supported their management and 32% felt it helped with treatment decisions. An overwhelming majority expressed a desire to continue using the IBD Portal after completion of the study. Viewing test results (23%) was the most common section visited, followed by clinic letters (21%). 29% of participants reported sharing their access with a partner or family member. The qualitative data supported the quantitative findings. Many users expressed considerable benefit from online provision to their IBD health record. Comparing users to non-users, logistic regression modeling showed active disease was significantly associated with use. Changes in health outcomes were explored using both univariate and regression analyses. Following multiple regression modeling, an increase in patient activation was significantly associated with Portal use (p < 0.02). A positive trend was observed in perceived support (p=0.06). Improvements in IBD knowledge and medication adherence were not observed. Health utilisation was greater amongst users with more frequent outpatient and helpline contacts observed. Conclusion: Design and implementation of an IBD Portal within the NHS setting is feasible. Technological, human and organisational factors need to be carefully considered during development to support adoption. The IBD Portal was used by a majority of participants and was perceived to support their care. Following adoption in other NHS clinical settings, a cluster randomised controlled study would provide the optimal study design to complete the evaluation process.

Abstract:
Parents do not always receive accurate, timely and comprehensive information regarding a positive newborn screening from their infants’ primary care providers. The dissertation outlines the investigation of this problem. The methodology of the study is discussed including the survey of parents and primary care providers using the past system, the development of a web portal with a focus on plain language and action focused handouts. Without a simple to understand parent handout the newborn screening process is more stressful to families. Review of the literature is detailed including newborn screening, patient education, health literacy, Internet usage, online health education, design of patient education websites and the evaluative process of learning tools. Surveys informed the content of the web-based patient portal for both parents and PCP. Abbreviated parental stress scores did not identify elevated stress in parents during the initial PCP visit when the NBS results and plan of care were discussed. Evaluation of the planned web portal was permanently delayed related to change in statewide policies; thus, a standalone website was developed using Agency for Health Care Research and Quality’s patient education material tool for understandability and actionability of both patient handouts and web portals. Physician actionable NBS handouts were also developed. Formative evaluation using experts’ input, one-to-one trials and small group trials of the handouts for the site were completed with minor revisions made to the portal. The formative evaluation using the simple survey tool would have provided any additional portal changes required. Strengths of the study to include survey response rates, rigor of the comments by both parents and PCPs as well as constructive feedback from NBS experts are highlighted. The weakness is the lack of having a final participant group identified or available related to local NBS policies. Recommendations for future research are highlighted as well as discussion of changes in federal policy that will now allow further NBS research without the limitations once imposed.

Abstract:
It is well known that physical activity can bring many benefits to people as they become older. In addition, a great deal is known about the personal and environmental motivators and barriers for older adults engaging in physical activity, yet policy imperatives have failed to deliver the change in activity levels required to even relatively modest levels of activity. This study has sought to ascertain the effect of involving older adults in the design, delivery, implementation and promotion of interventions to promote physical activity amongst their age group. Through a two phase design the study has sought to find out what the essential ingredients of a successful intervention to promote physical activity would be, before applying some of these findings to the promotion of interventions and considering their effect. The first phase of the study consisted of a qualitative study to identify older adults’ views and experiences. Some 61 older adults, aged between 49 and 87 years, were involved in 11 focus groups and 12 individual semi-structured interviews. Participants were asked why they engaged in physical activities, or what might encourage them to do so. The study was designed to identify the essential elements of a successful physical activity intervention. The second phase of the study, an action research project evolving from the qualitative study, involved older adults who were running community groups and physical activity sessions in their local areas and were keen to increase membership numbers. The Action Research Group, consisting of six older adults, two community development workers and the researcher, identified a number of problems to address as part of the study. New promotional literature for the community groups was developed, using the findings from the first study. Easy access, enjoyment, fun and affordability were highlighted on posters and leaflets that were distributed in the local communities. The studies established that there are various factors that make engaging in physical activities accessible and appealing to older adults. Participants reported that activities must be flexible; affordable; accessible; sociable; enjoyable and that engagement is seasonal. Factors relating to personality and lifestyle were also important. Not feeling the need to be active, and being unmotivated to do so, cannot be easily influenced by external promotion of physical activity. However, ensuring that activities are as easy as possible to engage in could help to encourage older adults to try activities that they might otherwise rule out. The health benefits of physical activity were far less important to the participants than the social benefits. Involving older adults in the promotion of activities, focussing on the characteristics of activities that appeal to them, had some success. Difficulties in appealing to older adults across a broad age range emerged, as many participants in both studies were put off attending any activity labelled as for ‘over 50s’. They did not identify themselves as ‘over 50’. Both studies highlighted the additional difficulty of attracting men to existing activity groups and sessions. A multilevel, social ecological model is presented, which highlights the influences on engagement in physical activity at individual and environmental levels. The future promotion of physical activity should focus on the social benefits and enjoyment that can be gained through participation, rather than on potential health benefits. How activities are labelled and promoted requires careful consideration and local older adults should be involved in local interventions. Community groups delivering interventions must receive tangible support.

Abstract:
Text in English
Developments in Internet technology and pervasive computing over the past two and half decades have resulted in a variety of Web-based applications (WBAs) that provide products and services to online users or customers. The Internet is used not only to transfer information via the web but is increasingly used to provide electronic services including business transactions, information-delivery and social networking, as well as e-government, e-health and e-learning. For such organisations, e-service quality, usability and user experience are considered to be critical determinants of their products’ or services’ success. Many studies to model these three concepts separately have been undertaken as part of broader studies of software quality or service quality modelling. However, to the current researcher’s knowledge, none of the studies have focussed on proposing an evaluation model that integrates and combines the three of them. This research is an effort to fill that gap. The primary purpose of this mixed-methods research was to develop a conceptual integrated model for evaluating e-service quality, usability and user experience (e-SQUUX) of WBAs and then contextualise it to evaluation of a University web portal (UWP). This was undertaken using an exploratory sequential research design. During a qualitative phase, an extensive extensive systematic literature review of 264 relevant sources relating to dimensions of e-service quality, usability and user experience, was undertaken to derive an integrated conceptual e-service quality, usability and user experience (e-SQUUX) Model for evaluating WBAs. The model was then empirically refined through a sequential series of validations, thus developing various versions of the e-SQUUX Model. First, it was content validated by a set of four expert reviewers. Second, during the quantitative phase, in the context of a University web portal, a questionnaire survey was conducted that included a comprehensive pilot study with 29 partipants, prior to the main survey. The main survey data from 174 particiapants was used to determine a validated model, using Exploratory factor analysis (EFA), followed by producing a structural model, using partial least square – structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). This version consisted of the components of the final e-SQUUX Model. Consequently, the research enriches the body of knowledge on IS and HCI by providing the e-SQUUX Model as an evaluation tool. For designers, developers and managers of UWPs, the model serves as a customisable set of evaluation criteria and also provides specific recommendations for design. In line with the Exploratory sequential design of mixed methods research, the findings of the qualitative work in this research influenced the subsequent quantitative study, since the potential Likert-scale questionnaire items were derived from the definitions and meanings of the components that emanated from the qualitative phase of the study. Consequently, this research is an exemplar for developing an integrated evaluation model for specific facets or domains, and of its application in a particular context, in this case, a University web portal. Keywords: e-service quality, usability, user experience, evaluation model, integrated model, exploratory factor analysis, partial least square – structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM), mixed methods research, Exploratory sequential design, quantitative study, qualitative study, validation, Web-based applications, University web portal

The contribution of this thesis focuses on addressing the challenges of improving and integrating the UniFrame Discovery Service (URDS) and Multi-level Matching (MLM) concepts. The objective was to find enhancements for both URDS and MLM and address the need of a comprehensive discovery service which goes beyond simple attribute based matching. It presents a detailed discussion on developing an enhanced version of URDS with MLM (proURDS). After implementing proURDS, the thesis includes details of experiments with different deployments of URDS components and different configurations of MLM. The experiments and analysis were carried out using proURDS produced MLM contracts. The proURDS referred to a public dataset called QWS dataset. This dataset includes actual information of software components (i.e., web services), which were harvested from the Internet. The proURDS implements the different matching operations as independent operators at each level of matching (i.e., General, Syntactic, Semantic, Synchronization, and QoS). Finally, a case study was carried out with the deployed proURDS. The case study addresses real world component discovery requirements from the earth science domain. It uses the contracts collected from public portals which provide geographical and weather related data.

The accumulation of knowledge advances technology while the share of knowledge creates infinite value. A library is one of the places that store up the wisdom of human beings - traditional books, and besides that, numerous e-books. That makes it an essential issue, as a result, to manage efficiently these books, documents, and journals for the convenience of sharing. According to this, we employ the RDF technology to build a semantic web portal. The protal is divided into content layer and program layer. The contents of the portal are represented in RDF according to the schema defined in ontologies. The program layer consists of application and indexing programs. The application programs includes conceptual search, direcotory navigation, forum service and personalization service. The indexing programs consist of ontology editor, RDF parser, and content extraction program. The separation of content and program makes it easy to reuse of program for different domains. At present we take library as the domain of this reseach. According to this framework, this thesis hopes to provide users with better access to information and facilitate exchange of knowledge than ever. Thus, we build the ontology based semantic web site that consists of concepts defining and structuring important terms, attributes specifying properties and relations, and rules allowing inferences and the generation of new knowledge. In the web, users can view author, publisher, and title information that they need. System also provides some services through agents to retrieve and manipulate RDF documents. In the future, we hopes to demonstrate a knowledge-share framework on the basis of ontology, and even further, to reuse the program layer by replacing content of another domain.

The object of this paper is to research how to simplify the complicated portal site webpage and the using web usage mining to be the way. In the research, I combine the PHP and MySQL to reach the purpose of the customized data research. Because of the way to selection the database is limited on the interactive webpage programs. So in this object I use the character of array with program to control the sort of data and it’s appeared or not by the determination of the website management. I use Neural Network and Cluster analysis and they are the novel way to research the customized data. At the same time, I use Template to separate the coding and art designing to reach the purpose which is let the webpage interface can variety and also convenient to the website management. In the feature research, we can use the better web usage mining process and use automatic operational analysis program, and the website management just need to write new Templates and data update, and the webpage can become various. The same way can also use to other webpage example of the PDA or mobile phone etc.

Abstract:
As a process inherent to the HCI area, UX Research can be seen as a strategy that supports the development of digital products, namely when usability and accessibility guidelines are used to drive the approach adopted. Practices and strategies based on user experience can facilitate understanding the generation of inputs to drive the digital products development as well as support requirements. In this context, this research is focused on the observation of the UX Research process in the development of the new web portal of the University of Aveiro aiming to investigate how UX Research practice can support the methodological approach used, regarding requirements support, identification of typology interface problems, and collection of information towards the continuous improvement of the development of the University of Aveiro (UA) New Portal. For this purpose, a Mixed Methodology was used based on the Grounded Theory framework, by the inductive process of data observation, delimited to the observation of the new News area of the web portal. Data saturation allowed us to know which UX Research sources had more capacity to raise data from the end-users, support requirements, identify types of interface problems, and supply the development of product solutions. As a consequence of the data processing, this research presents a UXR flow proposal to support data collection and engage stakeholders with the end-user needs and interests.

Abstract Because of the rapid development of World Wide Web (WWW), humans do things, such as learning, working, entertaining and communicating, all can make use of the Internet. This makes the design issue that the usability of web interface becomes more important. Also because current research related to Web 2.0 usability is limited, this study not only collects the representative samples of widgets, but also searches for relevant research studies regarding personal portal. In addition to the investigation of representative samples, experts’ viewpoints pertinent to user interface research and personalization of portals were also collected. A series of systematic research steps related to theory explorations and prototype testing were conducted in this study. The experiments conducted in this study are divided into three stages. At the first stage, by means of questionnaire survey and in-depth interview, current the visualization and interaction flow pertaining to sampled Web pages were analyzed. The results were used for the design of interaction prototype. At the second stage, two different personal portals, i.e., Netvibes and My Yahoo!, were compared based on users’ requirements. Users’ task performances were also recorded for further analysis. According to the results generated from the post hoc comparison, two factors, i.e., the screen layout and interaction flow, had great influences on users’ task performance, interface usability, and satisfaction. At the third stage, an innovative prototype of personal portal was created for the experimental purpose. A one-way ANOVA was conducted based on the main effect of interaction flow. The prototype was proven to provide better task performance, interface usability and satisfaction. The generated research findings regarding personal portal concluded that: (1) The planning of interaction flow for personal portal: Because the personal portal possesses three issues, i.e., setting, Web screen, and modules, an interaction designer should consider the rationale among these three issues. By so doing can decrease users’ recognition process and enhance their path learning experience. (2) The module design for personal portal: An interaction designer should provide easy-to-recognize functions for the personal portal. The setting of individual portal should be grouped in the same screen section. The functions of status inspection, setting area, and action confirmation should be provided as well. (3) The error prevention for personal portal: Based on current research, the operation setting provided instant preview. However, users often could not perceive slight change and control the addition of new module. Therefore, a screen section or a dialog box should be used for action confirmation purpose.

A complex shopping website often confuses users. A poor web design refrains the user from obtaining the desired information. Current academic research lacks a criterion for the home page layout design. This study offers suggestions to help web designers on the design of web page block re-layout. According to proximity compatibility principle, a mental compatibility and the integration of attention, a better design by re-layout or re-display web page blocks with a cluster closed each other can reduce waste of scanning and attention, and ultimately, it improves the readability of the webs. Yahoo Shopping Website is the most common shopping website in Taiwan, so it was used as the case in this study for redesign. The card sorting method was utilized to identify subjects'' metal models on the proximities of home page blocks on the shopping web portals. Two independent variables, block layout and color, were design in the experiment. Subjects'' eye movement was collected and analyzed through a gaze tracking system. Results showed that the best design was the re-layout of the page blocks. The findings of this study suggest that using the Proximity Compatibility Principle for designing web pages should be able to reduce the waste time of obtaining information and enhance browsing efficiency.
