Abstract:
The Web is an extraordinary success, for its simplicity. This simplicity has brought disadvantages, because with vast amounts of information available, the search is a difficult, time-consuming and sometimes inefficient task, creating the need for a strategic information management. To overcome this need came the portals. The characteristics of portals differ from each other, which made them appear different definitions. Also arose several classifications of portals, one of which considers three dimensions to classify them: the scope of content, the aim of the portal and the range of its intended users. With this work, the authors intend to build a Web Portal to support one or more serious games. A database is shared with the Web Portal. This portal will serve to make an interface between the user and the games, for the dissemination and support of these and as a platform for managing and monitoring results.

Abstract:
Several systems integration proposals have been suggested over the years. However these proposals have mainly focused on data integration, not allowing users to take advantage of services offered by Web portals. Most of the mentioned proposals only provide a set of design principles to build integrated systems and lack in suggesting a systematic way of how to develop systems based on the integration architecture they propose. In previous work we have developed PISA (Web Portal Integration Architecture)—a Web portal integration architecture for data and services—and MIDAS-S, a methodological approach for the development of integrated Web portals, built according to PISA. This work shows, by means of a case study, how both proposals fit together integrating Web portals.

Abstract:
Web analytics are typically branded as a tool for measuring website traffic. They can be equally used as a tool for business research, results of advertising campaigns, and market research. Web analytics provide data on the number of visitors, page views, measure a visitor’s navigation through a website, etc. This collection of data is typically compared against some metrics to indicate whether the web site is delivering expected values, what improvements should be considered, and so on. These metrics are also used to improve a web site or marketing campaign’s audience response. Tracking portal visits are important in order to obtain a better understanding of which parts of the portal are delivering value. However, portals have unique attributes associated with the page composition techniques, page, and portlet refresh. Portal always presents multiple topics on the same page, which pose specific challenges to explore exciting opportunities allowing the web designer to gain insights about portal usage and user behaviour. Furthermore, portals are inherently multidimensional, and effective tools to monitor and analyse portal data usage must be able to support multidimensional analysis.

Abstract:
Abstract Using maps is inevitable in many human activities as well as in mountaineering. Until recently, most of the spatial and attribute data of the mountaineer’s interest could have been found only in analog form. With the development of information technology, global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), easily accessible measuring sensors and digital cameras, it is easier to collect, store, visualize, share, and update spatial data. The web GIS with its associated applications assumes dominance in browsing and dissemination of spatial data, and is applied in areas where there is a need for processing, analysis and visualization of various data that contain a spatial component, including mountaineering. When planning hiking, mountaineers need both spatial and attribute information on mountaineering facilities, checkpoints, and hiking trails in the form of GNSS traces. Through the interactive web application interface, it is possible to connect all these data, enabling easy viewing, browsing and analysis, or performing various spatial queries, which greatly facilitates the planning of hiking excursions. This paper presents a review and comparison of four most visited Croatian mountaineering portals: HPS’s Interactive Mountaineering Map of Croatia, Mountaineering portal and Geodetic mountaineering portal developed at the Faculty of Geodesy of the University of Zagreb and planinarenje.hr portal developed by the group of mountain enthusiasts. Numerous data on Croatian mountains and peaks, mountain facilities, huts and hiking trails are now accessible through portals to anyone with Internet connection, either with the computers, tablets or smartphones. All users can browse, filter and download data from the portal, and there are additional options for authorized users such as commenting on portal content. Several thematic portals of neighboring countries were also analyzed (portal of the Slovenian Mountaineering Association, Slovak mountaineering portal and one Swiss mountaineering portal) and compared with Croatian portals. Finally, the importance of the web GIS portals for the development of mountaineering tourism was emphasized, as well as the ecological culture and the sustainability of the mountaineering environment (preservation of mountain trails and facilities, protection of endemic plants, karst and geological features, etc.). Highlights for public administration, management and planning: • The presented web GIS represent an effective and efficient tool for planning and conducting trips in mountain areas as it allows better organization and management of mountain content for the tourists and other hikers. • Registered users can participate in the portal update (e.g. peak or hill endonyms) and this can be used by State Geodetic Administration for their register of geographical names (http://rgi.dgu.hr/pretrazivanje) • The Web GIS can also be used as a support in the tourism development of local mountain areas with respect to the ecological culture and sustainability of the mountain environment.

Abstract:
Background Web portals providing health information online have the potential to reach large numbers of people. Yet few studies have assessed usage and costs of health portals, especially over an extended period of time. Objectives First, to assess the usage of a web portal on prevention and health promotion that was initiated by the German states of Berlin and Brandenburg. Second, to estimate average cost per pageview over the full web portal life-cycle. Methods Usage data were gathered through Google Analytics. The main usage metric assessed was pageviews originating from an IP address in Berlin or Brandenburg. Project cost data were reported by the local government and from own records. Descriptive and regression analyses were used to determine time trends in pageviews. Results The redesigned web portal Praeventionsatlas.de launched August 2011 and was discontinued March 2018. Analyzing the full calendar years only, the annual pageview number increased from 2012 (8492) to its peak in 2014 (11,876) and steadily decreased to its minimum in 2017 (7232). Pages of the web portal were most often viewed around lunchtime (12 to 1 p.m.), in the middle of the week (Wed to Thu), and at the beginning of the year (Jan to Feb). Adjusting for year, month, and weekday, the number of daily pageviews dropped on major public holidays (Easter −9, Pentecost −12, Christmas −12 and New Year’s Eve and Day −20; p < .001) and increased during the fasting period before Easter (+6; p < .001). Average cost per page viewed from relaunch until the web portal went offline was estimated to be €0.38 (€0.33 to €1.67) per pageview. Conclusion Usage of the web portal showed temporal variation and peaked before the middle of its 6.5 year life-cycle. Development and need for updates may require substantial investment in a web portal, such that a pageview can come at a considerable expense, even in small-scale projects. Assessing and discussing the cost-effectiveness of a web portal is therefore desirable.

Abstract:
Organizations providing enhanced electronic services to their customers have exponentially increased in past years. The benefits of web-portals to companies and to customers are well evident and are considered an IT artifact manifested in entry points to Internet-based information presentation and exchange by communities of common interest. Despite much research done on the benefits of web portals to companies, no research exists that focuses on impact of adoption of web-portals on a company’s market valuation. In this paper, the authors look into impact of web-portal announcements on company’s stock prices (market value). Using event-study methodology, they provide empirical evidence on the effect of announcements of web portals on the market valuation of the company for a sample of 25 publicly traded companies in 2008. The study examines stock data to access investors and shareholders’ reactions to web portal announcements. Results indicate that web portal announcements significantly and positively influence investors’ perceptions toward financial worth and future prospects of the company. The authors discuss these findings in detail and present implications for both research and practice. Findings offer insight that can be used by managers and executives in understanding the role and effect of a companies’ market value.

Abstract:
Electronic government implies the use of information and communication technology (ICT) for improving the way public services are provided to all citizens. In order to create an interface, through which citizens can use these services, web portals are developed. The web portal that represents the interface for the use of services intended for citizens in the Republic of Croatia, as key users, was developed in the frame of e-citizens project, initiated by the Croatian government in year 2013. Since its inception, the portal has been continuously upgraded and complemented by new electronic services. The usage of the e-citizens portal however, despite the availability of services, does not follow the developing trends according to researches by the local Ministry of Administration and the Eurostat data. Citizens access the portal, but mostly to collect information and do not use its advanced additional functionalities. This paper analyses Croatian government web portal, its functionalities, attitudes toward it and its use by citizens. Finally, based on data analysis improvement of the accessibility/usage of Croatian government portal will be proposed.

This article investigates the evolution of two different types of Web portals, one in Bangladesh and the other in Australia. The initial data collection was conducted in the early 2000s and revisited in 2009. The idea of a Web portal is not new, but in the last few years the portal concept has gained considerably in importance as new types of portal are developed and new uses found for portal technology. The article begins with a brief classification of the types of portals in use today and then considers some of the advantages conferred on a business in using portal technology. Developed and developing countries have different problems in making use of e-commerce and see the advantages and problems of using portals rather differently. In the article the authors examine and compare case studies of a Horizontal B-B Industry Portal in Melbourne, Australia, and a Vertical Industry Portal in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Abstract:
Redesigning of the whole portal or some of its webpages does not always lead to a positive result despite the designers' expectations. Nowadays the opinion on how to carry out the redesign of web portals varies. A web portal being in service and in a wide use, a sudden change in its design may result in a drop of the number of clients. The usability evaluation has become important to make a decision on what design of webpages to choose. The paper proposes a method to redesign of commercial web-portals which is based on usability evaluation of some webpages. The evaluation can be undertaken by surveying the staff of the business organization where such a web portal is being developed. The hierarchy made of the Choquet integrals aggregates the results of the questionnaire and allows for the interdependencies between individual metrics of usability. Then, a decision about the redesign of a certain webpage is made on the basis of the aggregated results. The described experiment has shown a great impact of this innovative approach.

Abstract:
A dynamic hierarchical web-based portal was created to house a suite of web-based supply chain management applications. The portal was designed in a hierarchical manner to match the structure of large companies. Administrators of the the portal have the ability to form the portal in such a way to mimic the existing structure of their company. Access rights to the applications in the portal may be granted or denied per division and the users of the portal are placed in these divisions based on their duty in the company. In addition, users are granted roles which dictate their ability to modify how the portal behaves. This thesis covers the client-side portion of the portal which includes the user interface and several client/server interfaces. The client-side was built with the Adobe Flex SDK and the Flash Builder 4 IDE, which connects to a ASP.NET MVC 3 back end and a MSSQL database. The code was internationalized to be able to plug in a localized language resource file. Unit tests were written with FlexUnit to test the code before deployment.

Abstract:
A web portal that publicly displays user-submitted content requires administration in order to ensure undesired content, that is potentially malicious, is excluded. Other administrative aspects that come with a web portal with user-submitted content include user-support and service maintenance. This project was formed in part to develop a new version of an existing web portal for advertising degree projects. The goal of the project is to develop an improved version of the old web portal and ensure that the new version requires as little manual administration work as possible. As how to minimize administration for this type of service was deemed unknown, this thesis takes an inductive approach to exploring how to minimize administration for a web portal with user-submitted content. This thesis results in the presentation of a web portal with new functionality and modified in aspects that the product owner wanted improved. The visual layout is presented along with information on what parts were reused from the old version of the web portal. Design choices that were made with a focus on minimizing administration and design choices in general that were deemed important are presented and motivated. Finally, the thesis concludes that possible areas where administrative work could be reduced depends heavily on the requirements set on the web portal and that the methods used in this thesis were successful in identifying administrative work aspects that can be reduced or eliminated on the web portal developed in this project. It is also concluded that sufficiently advanced automated systems could be useful in reducing the administrative work needed by any type of web portal with user-submitted content.

ABSTRACT: This paper will focus on a tourism web portal whose aim is to offer ideas and suggestions about tourist destinations and routes. Inspired on Web 2.0, collaborative mechanisms are used to allow users to share their opinion with the community, thus encouraging their critical voice. Two factions of the Semantic Web are analysed comparatively – Uppercase and lowercase – with the purpose of identifying which one fulfills the purposes of the proposed system best. lowercase semantic web was shown to be the ideal solution, and its implementation was demonstrated with the use of microformats. A discussion was also initiated regarding a new microformat for tourist routes: itinerary.

Abstract:
Benefiting from Web 2.0 features, Social Media works as an online support to organizations, beyond the organization's website. Social Media allows organizations to be were the users are, creating proximity, talk with them and know what they want. Virality and word-of-mouth became easier, as these platforms allow us to share, to like and use multimediality and convergence - since it can interact together. It's a large scale communication that potentially serves to Web Portals. Even more in the competitive environment that is the online, were they struggle to get more views, better search rankings and be the homepage for the Web universe. This dissertation discusses how the Web Portals can integrate Social Media and how it is benefiting from its use. Thus, the aim is to realize how the integration of Social Media is done and the benefits achieved in a News Portal. The largest Portuguese Web Portal was selected to be focused in this case study. For data collection, three interviews were conducted and then some analytical data and internal documents of the organization were analyzed. It was found that conditions were created to accommodate and integrate the chosen Social Media platforms, but in an organic and fluid way. Although there hasn't been a mindful adoption, in most of the cases, there is a great focus in community construction and less in the absorptive capacity. The benefits achieved corroborate the literature presented.

Abstract:
