Abstract:
This study focused on how individuals used personal home pages to present themselves online. Content analysis was used to examine, record, and analyze the characteristics of personal home pages. Data interpretation revealed popular tools for self-presentation, a desire for virtual homesteaders to affiliate with online homestead communities, and significant relationships among home page characteristics. Web page design was influenced, to a certain extent, by the tools Web page space providers supplied. Further studies should consider personality characteristics, design templates, and Web author input to determine factors that influence self-presentation through personal home pages.

Abstract:
We present a new approach in web search engines. The web creates new challenges for information retrieval. The vast improvement in information access is not the only advantage resulting from the keyword search. Additionally, much potential exists for analyzing interests and relationships within the structure of the web. The creation of a hyperlink by the author of a web page explicitly represents a relationship between the source and destination pages which demonstrates the hyperlink structure between web pages. Our web search engine searches not only for the keywords in the web pages, but also for the hyperlink structure between them. Comparing the results of structural web search versus keyword-based search indicates an improved ability to access desired information. We also discuss steps toward mining the queries input to the structural web search engine.

Abstract:
There are several Search Engines to categorize the web content and show us on base of our search query. These search engines are continuously visiting the pages/sites and gather the information using different techniques called crawling/spidering. On basis of daily content collection all search engines are managing their own indexes for searches. For every business there is a need to make its pages as most top rated/ranked pages by making structurally and content wise batter so that any crawler can easily crawl it and can rank it among the top 10 results. In this thesis only, structural behavior is being discussed in which internal graphical relationships between pages and the loading time of pages in terms of all supportive content .Structural overview includes the HTML tags structure which works as tree flow starting from tag and then moving towards child nodes.Page speed identifies the loading time of a page, it helps search engine to categories pages for mobile devices as well.Sometimes there is a thunder option on mobile search with rank it represents that this page is super-fast in loading. Page loading includes the loading of all content except Ajax base content.According to Google Page, rank is based on page content, page structure and page loading time.As discussion is only Page structure and page loading time so Google already gave some instructions related to Page structure and page loading speed but those instructions are not enough also it need to discover the new dimensions to make business pages among the top-rated results.

Abstract:
Web records are structured data on a Web page that embeds records retrieved from an underlying database according to some templates. Mining data records on the Web enables the integration of data from multiple Web sites for providing value-added services. Most existing works on Web record extraction make two key assumptions: (1) records are retrieved from databases with uniform schemas and (2) records are displayed in a linear structure on a Web page. These assumptions no longer hold on the modern Web. A Web page may present records of diverse entity types with different schemas and organize records hierarchically, in nested structures, to show richer relationships among records. In this paper, we revisit these assumptions and modify them to reflect Web pages on the modern Web. Based on the reformulated assumptions, we introduce the concept of invariant in Web data records and propose Miria ( Mi ning r ecord i nvari a nt), a bottom-up, recursive approach to construct the Web records from the invariants. The proposed approach is both effective and efficient, consistently outperforming the state-of-the-art Web record extraction methods on modern Web pages.

Abstract:
Social bookmarking Websites are popular nowadays for they provide platforms that are easy and clear to browse and organize Web pages. Users can add tags on Web pages to allow easy comprehension and retrieval of Web pages. However, tag spams could also be added to promote the opportunity of being referenced of a Web page, which is troublesome to users for accessing uninterested Web pages. In this work, we proposed a scheme to automatically detect such tag spams using a proposed text mining approach based on self-organizing map (SOM) model. We used SOM to find the associations among Web pages as well as tags. Such associations were then used to discover the relationships between Web pages and tags. Tag spams can then be detected according to such relationships. Experiments were conducted on a set of Web pages collected from a social bookmarking site and obtained promising result.

In the last decade, new approaches focused on modeling uncertainty over complex relational data have been developed. In this paper, one of the most promising of such approaches, known as probabilistic relational model (PRM), has been investigated and extended in order to measure and include semantic relationships for addressing web page classification problems. Experimental results show the potential of the proposed method of capturing the "strength" of existing relationships (links) and the capacity of including this information into the probability model.

Abstract:
Motivated by applying Text Categorization to classification of Web search results, this paper describes an extensive experimental study of the impact of bag-of- words document representations on the performance of five major classifiers - Na?ve Bayes, SVM, Voted Perceptron, kNN and C4.5. The texts, representing short Web-page descriptions sorted into a large hierarchy of topics, are taken from the dmoz Open Directory Web-page ontology, and classifiers are trained to automatically determine the topics which may be relevant to a previously unseen Web-page. Different transformations of input data: stemming, normalization, logtf and idf, together with dimensionality reduction, are found to have a statistically significant improving or degrading effect on classification performance measured by classical metrics - accuracy, precision, recall, F1 and F2. The emphasis of the study is not on determining the best document representation which corresponds to each classifier, but rather on describing the effects of every individual transformation on classification, together with their mutual relationships. .

Rapid analysis of massive data can lead to innovation and concepts of the theoretical value. Compared with results from mining between traditional data sets and the vast amount of large heterogeneous data interdependent it has the ability expand the knowledge and ideas about the target domain. We studied in this research data mining on the Internet. The various networks that are used to extract data onto different locations complex may appear sometimes and has been used to extract information on the web technology to extract and data analysis (Marwah et al., 2016). In this research, we extracted the information on large quantities of the web pages and examined the pages of the site using Java code, and we added the extracted information on a special database for the web page. We used the data network function to get accurate results of evaluating and categorizing the data pages found, which identifies the trusted web or risky web pages, and imported the data onto a CSV extension. Consequently, examine and categorize these data using WEKA to obtain accurate results. We concluded from the results that the applied data mining algorithms are better than other techniques in classification and extraction of data and high performance.

Abstract:
There is a need of storing and keeping track of things. As the amount of information increases, so does the demand for suitable applications that can manage the data. This thesis has had its focus on developing a web administration interface for relational databases, where the focus has been on managing and visualizing the data, where relationships between data within the database could be predicted through an algorithm. During the thesis, it was revealed that administrators can utilize naming conventions for databases, a property which can be used to predict its relationships. Furthermore, existing applications for managing databases has been compared with the thesis' implementation. Notable differences are that existing solutions are focused towards the structure of the data, rather than the data itself. To accomplish all this, an agile method was chosen for fast results within the deadline, together with standardized web development tools and JavaScript frameworks. The resulting implementation consists of a front- and backend. The frontend was developed using the Ember.JS framework for making web applications and the backend was implemented using Node.JS, together with a component for handling different database dialects called Sequelize. It has been concluded that the prototype this thesis has resulted in works as a proof of concept, complete with a prediction algorithm that can suggest relationships within databases that utilizes convenient and consistent naming conventions. In the future, further research and tests could be conducted to evaluate the security, reliability and usability of the application, to ensure its production quality.

Abstract:
The main hypothesis of the thesis is that between two systems identical in functionality and usability, differences in aesthetics may positively influence users perceived usability. To date, a narrow focus on the engineering aspects of aesthetics has adversely affected the scope and success of experiments, therefore previous work in the field needed to be revisited. The thesis reviews literature and theory in usability and aesthetics, the latter from the point of the view of philosophy, theory, and application. It also explores the relationship between aesthetics, usability and user engagement; discusses a distinct new trend research that identifies a link between beauty and perceived usability of website interaction; and develops a pilot for an experimental methodology. Based on conclusions from the review of the field of usability, two experiments where designed and carried out, an independent measures and repeated measures. The findings of these experiments confirmed the hypothesis that perceived usability was positively influenced by higher aesthetics.

Abstract:
With the number of web applications on the internet increasing rapidly it has become very important to engineer them in ways similar to how we develop and maintain mainstream software. Most of the existing web applications were developed using ad hoc techniques and as a result, most of them are suffering from various structural flaws. This increases the effort and cost required to maintain the application and decreases component reuse. In this study titled ‘Restructuring Of Web Applications Based On Particle Swarm Optimization Using Web Page Relationships And Metrics’ we tried to improve the quality of existing web applications by removing structural flaws that exist in its implementation. Previous research has used genetic algorithm (GA) to optimize a web application and used coupling and cohesion to create clusters of web pages. The results showed that changing the structure provide an impact on the quality of the application. We extend that work by using particle swarm optimization for restructuring purposes in an attempt to improve the quality of the web application.

Web usage mining which extracts knowledge from Web server log is an application of data mining method. The mining results can be used for improving the Web design, predicating user behavior and personalizing Web site. Web usage mining has three major stages: data preprocessing, pattern discovery and pattern analysis. Data pre-processing, which normally spends more than 60% of the whole mining process, is most time consuming. Cooley divided data preprocessing into four and one optional steps. They were data cleaning, user/session identification, path completion, page view identification and transaction identification which is optional. Until now, the preprocessing of Web usage mining must gather external domain knowledge, such as Web structure and Web content classification, which greatly affects the application of Web usage mining. It takes more time for the analyst to be familiar with Web structure and content. For Web administrator, she/he may have concerns with the confidential Web data when giving the detailed Web structure to the analyst. Thus, we want to solve the problem by creating a platform between analysts and Web administrators to help them better communicate during the Web usage mining progress. In this thesis, we propose a framework that can reconstruct Web structure and discover the page relationship from Web server log’s implicit information. The experimental results showed that Web site reconstruction and page relationship discovery with precision of more than 90%. This method that can be easily embedded in the popular preprocessing stage is a workable and practical substitute method.

In recent years, search engines have already played the key roles among Web applications, and link analysis algorithms are the major methods to measure the important values of Web pages. They employ the conventional flat Web graph built by Web pages and link relations of Web pages to obtain the relative importance of Web objects. Previous researches have observed that PageRank-like link analysis algorithms have a bias against newly created Web pages. A new ranking algorithm called Page Quality was proposed to save this issue. Page Quality anticipates future ranking values by the difference rate between current ranking values and previous ranking values. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm called DRank to diminish the bias of PageRank-like link analysis, and attain the better performance of Page Quality. In this algorithm, we model Web graph as a three-layer graph which includes Host Graph, Directory Graph and Page Graph by using the hierarchical structure of URLs and the structure of link relation of Web pages. At first, we discuss the aggregated phenomena of link relations within host level and directory level and according to what we observe we assign different weight to different types of links. We then calculate the importance of hosts, Directories and Pages by weighted graph we built. We find two phenomena: One is that hosts or directories that have higher rank value contain the majority of important pages and we observe that directory level is a better block level to prove new pages created within an important blocks have the higher probability to be important pages. The other is that there are ladder-graphs within directories while we sort ranking values within directories in the decreasing order. By combining Page Quality algorithm and the two phenomena we state above, we can predicate the more accurate values of page importance to diminish the bias of newly created pages. Experiment results on our data shows that DRank algorithm works well on anticipating future ranking values of pages, and the performance of DRank is better than Page Quality.

This study aims to investigate the relationship between the layout and browsing routes for merchandise display pages on Taiwan’s three major e-commerce websites, as ascertained by results from eye tracking experiments and expert interviews. The study offers some overall conclusions and suggestions which may serve as a reference for future practices in designing and implementing e-commence websites. The experiment was divided into two stages, and included 23 participants whose viewing behavior was recorded; the effective sample pool was 20. The objective of the first test was to examine the merchandise viewing efficacy rendered by these three e-commerce websites. Through this experiment, the website with the merchandise page setup and browsing routes which enabled users to locate their desired merchandise in the shortest time was determined, as well as the samples’ visual fixation distributions and durations. In the second experiment, merchandise page layouts were tested. Different arrangement schemes of merchandise displayed by these same three websites were manipulated to test the effects they have on user eye fixation count and fixation time, in an attempt to understand what type of merchandise display arrangement scheme draws the most attention from viewers and encourages them to spend more viewing time. Expert interviews provided insights and suggestions from skilled web page designers and website builders regarding their perspectives on merchandise display page arrangement and user browsing routes, and in particular, the concepts employed when building their own e-commerce websites. Finally, interview data is introduced and analyzed using content analysis methodology, which may serve as a reference for e-commerce website design practices.

Abstract In face of the competitive work environment and the more and more advanced Internet technology, many designers have started acquire knowledge about using computer graphics software through online forums in recent years. However, as most of the online forums are not well-organized, and the difference of webpage presentation on different computers is not considered, inconvenience in using and learning has been resulted. Thus, many users are unable to be benefited by the advantages of online forums. The objective of this study was to investigate the difference among factors of web layouts for existing online forums. Based on the user groups of different cognitive styles, this study attempted to find out an optimal web layout and set up the design principles for forum webpage as a reference for designers and engineers to construct this type of websites in the future. First of all, according to the literature review, 10 factors of web layouts were set up. From the current online forums, this study collected 10 forums dedicated to the discussion of computer graphics software. Finally, based on the graphics software forums, an experiment was conducted on the web layouts. Through the experiment on webpage components, the analysis results showed a significant difference in white space, page division, contrast between foreground and background, and color among the factors of forum layout components. In other words, research subjects’ satisfactions with white space, page division, contrast between foreground and background, and colors were bipolar. In the aspect of white space, the difference in the proportion of white space columns was the largest. In the aspect of page division, the difference in the location of basic data and utilization of color blocks is the largest. In the aspect of foreground and background contrast, the difference in the contrast of font and background is the largest. Finally, in the aspect of colors, the difference in the number of colors applied for text columns is the largest. In addition, based on the experimental results, this study set “cognitive style”, “location of basic data”, and “utilization of color blocks” as the factors for the experiment on layout arrangement. In the experiment, Group Embedded Figure Test, GEFT, was applied to group the subjects by cognitive styles. Through computer experiment, this study further investigated the impact of different web layouts on users with different cognitive styles. The analysis indicated that users with field independence preferred the placement of basic data on the left, joined published articles with the use of different color blocks, while users of field dependence preferred the placement of basic data on the left, un-joined published articles, and the use of same color blocks.

Abstract:
The development of the Internet has led to a new platform for Web pages, Web 2.0. An interactive environment where users generate content. Facebook, which is one of the most popular social media sites, has opened up new opportunities for companies to communicate directly with individuals. Facebook has encouraged this by offering the technology and the possibility by developing the feature pages. The purpose of this study was to examine how Swedish Facebook users relate to company's presence on Facebook through pages. The study also intended to find out how Swedish Facebook users think that companies should behave on their Facebook page. We have examined the awareness, the attitudes and the expectations that Facebook users have toward pages, and how the users utilize pages. The study was conducted by method triangulation: a survey based on 728 Swedish Facebook users, and four additional interviews. The study has public relations and Customer Relationship Management as theoretical framework. Our results show that the awareness of pages is high amongst the respondents. It also shows that they understand the meaning of pages, they explain the concept in the same way as Facebook does. The general attitude to pages is positive among the respondents, still there are many who does not like pages. It also appears that the reason that respondents like pages, or not like, are often related to how they want to present their own self-image. And also because they actually appreciate the company. It is important for the respondents that the companies keep users updated through their pages. It also emerged that many of the respondents use pages passively, meaning that they read about updates through their newsfeed instead of actively going into the pages. The study also shows that the respondents ask for two-way communication on pages, but they are not willing to take the initiative themselves.

Abstract:
Abstract Eusebius the Evangelist analyzes Eusebius of Caesarea’s fourth-century reconfiguration of the Gospels as a window into broader questions of technology and textuality in the ancient Mediterranean. The four Gospels of the New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) share language, narratives, and ideas, yet they also differ in structure and detail. The sophisticated system through which Eusebius organized this intricate web of textual relationships is known as the Eusebian apparatus. Eusebius’ editorial intervention—involving tables, sectioning, and tables of contents—participates in a broader late ancient transformation in reading and knowledge. To illuminate Eusebius’ innovative use of textual technologies, the study juxtaposes diverse ancient disciplines—including chronography, astronomy, geography, medicine, philosophy, and textual criticism—with a wide range of early Christian sources, attending to neglected evidence from material texts and technical literature. These varied phenomena reveal how Eusebius’ fourfold Gospel worked in the hands of readers. Eusebius’ creative juxtapositions of Gospel material had an enduring impact on Gospel reading. Not only did Eusebius continue earlier trajectories of Gospel writing, but his apparatus continued to generate new possibilities in the hands of readers. For more than a millennium, in more than a dozen languages and in thousands of manuscripts, Eusebius’ invention transformed readers’ encounters with Gospel text on the page. By employing emerging textual technologies, Eusebius created new possibilities of reading, thereby rewriting the fourfold Gospel in a significant and durable way.

Abstract:
The Lutheran accents of Bonhoeffer’s theology become more pronounced as we move from his story of creation, fall, and redemption (Chapter 1) into his specifically political reflections (beginning in Chapter 3). In order to pave the way for this transition, this chapter presents some traditional characteristics of Lutheran theology before returning to Bonhoeffer in light of them. The starting point is the doctrine of justification, generally seen as the center of Lutheran theology. Inseparable from justification is the distinction between law and gospel, which is of fundamental significance for all that follows about Bonhoeffer’s political thinking. The message of justification and the complex relationship of law and gospel implied by it set the framework for political life, including the right relationship of church and state.

Abstract:
This chapter identifies three key elements for effectively implementing the Covenants in times of financial crisis: a people-oriented, rights-based perspective, a process to foster coherence, and a new paradigm for bridging the gap between human rights and international financial regulations. It first analyses the anatomy of different types of financial crises from a rights-holder perspective and identifies the key actors and their potential impacts. It shows that, while financial crises share commonalities, their triggers, involved actors, and effects may vary substantially, leading to a complex web of relationships and responsibilities and norm fragmentation. This feeds into an expansion of focus from people to process and coherence with an analysis of the human rights responsibilities of international financial institutions and their members. The chapter concludes by suggesting translational human rights as a new paradigm for bridging the identified conceptual gaps and conflicting interests, and to pave the way for a more active role of the Covenants.

Abstract:
Ajax, perhaps the earliest surviving tragedy of Sophocles, presents the downfall and disgrace of a great hero whose suicide leads to his rehabilitation through the enlightened magnanimity of one of his enemies. This edition attempts to show that Sophocles offers no easy answer to the question of why Ajax falls, and no simple solution to the problem of how we ought to live so as to avoid tragedy in our own lives. The introductory chapter focuses on Ajax, as one of the major characters in Homer's Iliadand the only hero in the story that never received direct help from a god. It looks into the Odyssey, which provides the earliest reference of Sophocles being concerned with Ajax. The next chapter provides the original text of Sophocles's play about Ajax. It talks about how the play began with the death of Achilles and Ajax's desire to be rewarded with his armor. It also mentions Ajax's shame and intention of suicide after killing Agamemnon and Menelaus when they gave Achilles's armor to Oddyseus. The chapter discusses the ending of the play in which Odysseus insisted that Ajax should be buried properly. The final chapter gives the commentary for the play. It talks about how Sophocles began his plays with dialogue in order to provide the audience with information about the story. It also mentions the introduction of Odysseus and reveal of Athena as the goddess in the beginning of the play. This chapter analyses the relationships among Ajax, Odysseus, and Athena. The book presents Greek text with facing-page English translation, introduction and extensive commentary.

Abstract:
Drawing on in-depth interviews with a wide variety of people, this book answers two questions: How and why do we personally engage with elected officials online and offline? What influence does this personal political engagement have on our democracy? Never before has it been so easy for Americans to make their personal views known to their elected officials. Citizens can tweet their opinions to their political representatives or respond to a Facebook post on politicians' pages to convey their approval or dislike for policies. They can engage politically through virtual town halls or show up in person at a protest easily organized through digital platforms. But this mediated relationship also makes it easy for politicians to push back against the opinions of their constituents by deriding their views or even blocking them online. The New Town Hall gives readers a firsthand look at personal political experiences through vivid stories from a variety of Americans. Researcher and former journalist Gina Masullo documents how Americans feel when they are blocked on social media and demonstrates how political talk with elected officials—both online and offline—leads to more involved types of political participation, such as protests or campaigning for political candidates. She contextualizes these personal political experiences with an eye toward understanding how these interactions influence the democratic process.

Abstract:
Over the past few decades, debates about policing in poor urban areas have shifted from analyzing the state’s neglect and abandonment to documenting its harsh interventions and punishing presence. Most of this research has focused on the overt actions and inactions of the state. Yet we know very little about the covert world of state action that is hidden from public view. The Ambivalent State offers an unprecedented look into the clandestine relationships between police officers and drug dealers in Argentina. Drawing on a unique combination of ethnographic research and documentary evidence, including hundreds of pages of wiretapped phone conversations, sociologists Javier Auyero and Katherine Sobering analyze the inner workings of “police-criminal collusion” and its connections to drug markets and the depacification of daily life. Through rich descriptions of the actual clandestine interactions between drug dealers and police, they argue that an up-close examination of covert state action exposes the workings of an “ambivalent state”: one that enforces the rule of law while at the same time and in the same place functions as a partner to what it defines as criminal behavior. The Ambivalent State develops a political sociology of violence that focuses on not only what takes place in police stations, criminal courts, and poor neighborhoods, but also the clandestine actions and interactions of police agents, judges, and politicians that structure daily life at the urban margins. By way of empirical demonstration, the book makes an urgent call for scholars to incorporate clandestine action into understandings of the state.

Abstract:
Abstract Attention and distraction are anthropological constants, central to the way we experience the world; often cast as adversaries, they are in fact closely intertwined, and their relationship is not constant but highly changeable—a barometer of social and cultural change. This wide-ranging interdisciplinary study explores the interplay of attention and distraction from the Enlightenment to the present day, with a particular focus on twentieth-century Germany. Building on the Enlightenment tradition of mental self-observation, nineteenth-century Germany was the birthplace of experimental psychology which sought to measure and potentially enhance attention. Around 1900, this new, psychologically informed understanding of the self began to shape domains such as work and leisure, consumerism and education. In the Weimar Republic, the new discipline of psychotechnics was seen as central to the effort of building a modern, efficient, and potentially fairer society. Its aspirations were mirrored and enhanced by a thriving self-help literature market, which gave readers the tools for their own cognitive optimization. Yet as attention was cast as the key mental resource, in professions ranging from train drivers to telephone operators, distraction emerged as the new buzzword of the period, evoking the spectre of mental and social fragmentation. For many early twentieth-century commentators anxious about the pace of modern life, the rise of distraction spelled the end of contemplative attention. This book shows that many leading German writers, thinkers, and artists did not simply endorse this negative assessment of distraction, but engaged with the dialectical nature of attention constructively, by enacting and reflecting (on) the intrinsically fluid nature of the human mind.

Full text
Abstract:
Australia’s coral reefs stretch far and wide, covering 50 000 square kilometres from the Indian Ocean in the West to the Pacific Ocean in the East. They have been viewed as a bedrock of coastal livelihoods, as uncharted and perilous nautical hazards, as valuable natural resources, and as unique, natural wonders with secrets waiting to be unlocked. Australia’s coral reefs have sustained a global interest as places to visit, and as objects of study, science, protection and conservation. Coral Reefs of Australia examines our evolving relationship with coral reefs, and explores their mystery and the fast pace at which they are now changing. Corals are feeling the dramatic impacts of global climate change, having undergone several devastating mass coral bleaching events, dramatic species range shifts and gradual ocean acidification. This comprehensive and engaging book brings together the diverse views of Indigenous Australians, coral reef scientists, managers and politicians to reveal how we interact with coral reefs, focussing on Indigenous culture, coastal livelihoods, exploration, discovery, scientific research and climate change. It will inform and inspire readers to learn more about these intriguing natural phenomena and how we can protect coral reefs for the future. Abstract:
AbstractDrawing from the Nordic tradition of sakprosa research, this chapter aims at analysing how generic and intertextual resources are used in Finnish companies’ corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting. Longitudinally, we study the reporting format, that is, whether the companies are reporting about their sustainability issues separately or as part of their annual report. A comparable synchronic approach is applied to intertextuality between reports and sustainability pages on corporate websites. The data stems from companies listed in the Nasdaq Helsinki Stock Exchange (OMX25 index). It comprises CSR reporting from the financial years 2016–2020 and sustainability pages of three companies. The study shows a tendency of keeping the chosen reporting format irrespective of its kind. However, two types of variability occur: selective variability referring to one format change in the investigated time span, and hybridity, combining features of different formats. Three intertextual strategies between the texts of reports and web pages were detected: convergence, adaptation, and divergence. Our results show how choices of reporting format and intertextual strategies are governed by the company context and practices, and also by governance issues and regulation. In this way, the complexity of text-society relationships as postulated by sakprosa research is illustrated in the context of business texts.

AbstractThis chapter discusses the example of Wales to give insights to how and why a Wellbeing Economy approach has been successfully initiated there, and some idea of its future prospects. The systems aspects of Wellbeing Economy are identified as being inherent in ambitions to develop transitional strategies that can achieve system change through combinations of measures across different aspects of economy, society and ecology. The example of Wales includes the historical, cultural and economic background to help understanding of the bases on which Wellbeing Economy commitments can be supported in a population. The chapter concludes with some general points about the value of systems tools and approaches in helping to really bring Wellbeing Economy topics off the page and into reality. In particular, the complexity of the task of Wellbeing Economy is suited to systems approaches that can help to map coherent relationships between different areas and also aid in moving from loose alliances to more synergies. These tools and approaches can be powerful when combined with the extensive local knowledge and motivation that exists wherever we find communities and individuals working for a better future.

AbstractThe concluding chapter of the book points to research agendas that have emerged from the contributions to the volume on movements and morality. It does not sum up each contribution, since an introduction to concepts, methods, and applications can be found in the introductory Chap. 1. Instead, the chapter identifies six lacunae in social movement studies that have become apparent in the pages of the book. A first lacuna is related to the bias in focus on left-wing groups, a second on the causal effects of morality, a third foundational lacuna pertains to the relationship between social science and moral philosophy, a fourth to how we perceive of morality and time, a fifth to the global diffusion of moral claims, and finally a sixth lacuna relates to reflections on the dilemma of universal moral claims versus particular identities and situations.

Abstract:
AbstractCritical success factors for the efficient use of electric trucks are the operational range and the total costs of ownership. For both range and efficient use, power consumption is the key factor. Increasing precision in forecasting power consumption and, hence, maximum range will pave the way for efficient vehicle deployment. However, not only electric trucks are scarce, but also is knowledge with respect to what these vehicles are actually technically capable of. Therefore, this article focuses on power consumption and range of electric vehicles. Following a discussion on how current research handles the mileage of electric vehicles, the article illustrates how to find simple yet robust and precise models to predict power consumption and range by using basic parameters from transport planning only. In the paper, we argue that the precision of range and consumption estimates can be substantially improved compared to common approaches which usually posit a proportional relationship between energy consumption and travel distance and require substantial safety buffers.

Abstract:
Abstract Smart sanctions are an increasingly popular tool in foreign policy. Countries and international institutions worldwide issue such lists to sanction targeted entities through financial asset freezing, embargoes, and travel restrictions. The relationships between the issuer and the targeted entities in such lists reflect what kind of entities the issuer intends to be against. Thus, analyzing the similarities of sets of targeted entities created by several issuers might pave the way toward understanding the foreign political power structure that influences institutions to take similar actions. In the current paper, by analyzing the smart sanctions lists issued by major countries and international institutions worldwide (a total of 73 countries, 12 international organizations, and 1,700 lists), we identify the hierarchical structure of influence among these institutions that encourages them to take such actions. The Helmholtz–Hodge decomposition is a method that decomposes network flow into a hierarchical gradient component and a loop component and is especially suited for this task. Hence, by performing a Helmholtz–Hodge decomposition of the influence network of these institutions, as constructed from the smart sanctions lists they have issued, we show that meaningful insights about the hierarchical influence structure behind smart sanctions can be obtained.

Abstract:
Background: A growing body of scientific literature points to the consequences of various factors related to housing status on the well-being of individuals, particularly the elderly. This project aims to develop models that guarantee high-quality care for older people living in the province of Bolzano based on quantitative data analysis. Current changes within the family structure make it increasingly necessary to find new answers to the needs of the elderly. Based on these assumptions, we will investigate which support options encourage older people to live longer in their own homes. Methods: The sample is characterized by individuals residing in South Tyrol, living in their own homes and over 60 years of age. A 14-page questionnaire was administered in 2020 in German and Italian to 536 individuals. Utilizing a latent class model, we first tried to identify which factors act as resources and which as barriers for older people. In addition, using a quantile model, we investigated some aspects of satisfaction with the neighbourhood, measured with a 10-point scale. Results: The study shows that architectural barriers and harmful sanitary conditions are negatively associated with housing satisfaction. At the same time, social activities, a good relationship with the neighbourhood and safe living conditions act as resources. The role of neighbours and voluntary work increase housing satisfaction and ensure that older people stay in their homes as long as possible, playing a crucial role in this respect. With regards to the satisfaction with the neighbourhood, we can observe that the effect tends to be much stronger and more negative for individuals with an overall low neighbourhood frequency. Discussion: as in previous research, the objective indicators showed a more significant impact, while the positive results regarding some subjective factors deserve further investigation.

Abstract:
AbstractThe title of this chapter refers to how current developments in technology are not just one further innovation of the industrial era, but will lead to decisive changes in production methods, markets, labour, consumption and, to a considerable extent, personal and social relationships. But these changes will be happening within the economic and political framework of the period prior to digitalisation and will persist in the globalisation of the economy. These pages will focus on what we believe to be key issues: changes to business and work, changes to the education and training of people in general and the active population in particular, and certain activities that will have a profound effect on the way we communicate and relate to each other. No technological innovation, not even this one, exists and acts in isolation from the socio-political framework. Therefore, it is also important to analyse the policies and strategies that might lead the digital economy in one direction or another, towards an increase in inequality or in welfare. Going further, what our analysis does not cover is how the digital revolution could be of great help to curb the climate crisis, with changes in energy production, mobility, construction and protection of the environment, provided there is political will and consequent action.

Abstract:
The paper deals with the question, how the efficiency and successfulness of web pages in information dissemination can be measured. The paper concentrates on the use of a corporate web page in public relations with different interest groups. Basic principles of public relations theory are summarized. The importance of web-page credibility is emphasized and different factors that can have influence on it are identified. Obviously, reliability, punctuality and quality of published information are of utmost importance. However other factors that can affect credibility (such as technical quality, page structure etc.), are also studied. Special attention is paid to another important topic in public relations theory - how can a web page be used to build and flourish dialogue relationships between the company and different interest groups that affect company’s performance. The newly developed model CUT (Content, Usability, Technology) for evaluation of web pages is presented. The model includes evaluation of web pages from different perspectives. While accurate, complete and up-to-date information is certainly crucial, other factors from usability and technology perspective are also emphasized. The model use is demonstrated on a case study of companies from different countries and industry branches.

"How Content Volume on Landing Pages Influences Consumer ‎‎Behavior: Empirical Evidence." In InSITE 2018: Informing Science + IT Education Conferences: La Verne California. Informing Science Institute, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.28945/4016.

Full text
Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: This paper describes an empirical investigation on how consumer behavior is influenced by the volume of content on a commercial landing page -- a stand-alone web page designed to collect user data (in this case the user’s e-mail address), a behavior called “conversion.” Background: Content is a term commonly used to describe the information made available by a website or other electronic medium. A pertinent debate among scholars and practitioners relate to information volume and consumer behavior: do more details elicit engagement and compliance, operationalized through conversions, or the other way around? Methodology: A pilot study (n= 535) was conducted in ‎real-world commercial setting, followed by a series of large-scale online experiments (n= 27,083). Both studies employed a between-group design: Two variations of landing pages, long and short, were created based on various behavioral theories. User traffic to the pages was generated using online advertising and randomized between the pages (A/B testing). Contribution: This research contributes to the body of knowledge on the antecedents and outcomes of online commercial interaction, focusing on content as a determinant of consumer decision-making and behavior. Findings: The observed results indicate a negative correlation between content volume and users’ conversions. The shorter pages had significantly higher conversion rates, across locations and time. Findings suggest that content play a significant role in online decision making. They also contradict prior research on trust, persuasion, and security. Recommendations for Practitioners: At a practical level, results can inform practitioners on the importance of content in online commerce. They provide an empirical support to design and content strategy considerations, specifically the use of elaboration in commercial web pages. Recommendation for Researchers: At the theoretical level, this research advances the body of knowledge on the paradoxical relationship between the increased level of information and online decision-making and indicates that contrary to earlier work, not all persuasion theories‎ are ‎effective online. Impact on Society: Understanding how information drive behavior has implications in many domains (civic engagement, health, education and more). This has relevance to system design and public communication in both online and offline contexts, suggesting social value. Future Research: ‎Using this research as a starting point, future research can examine the impact of content in other contexts, as well as other behavioral drivers (such as demographic data). This can lead to theoretical, methodological and practical recommendations.

Abstract:
Patent citations to science provide a paper trail of knowledge flow from science to innovation, and have attracted a lot of attention in recent years. However, most studies rely on patent front-page references. We compare these two types of references and test whether they lead to the same analytical results regarding the relationship between science and innovation. Using a dataset of 33,337 USPTO biotech utility patents and their 860,879 in-text references and 637,570 front-page references to Web of Science journal articles, we found a remarkable low overlap between these two types of references. In-text references are more basic and have more scientific citations than front-page references. In-text references are less interdisciplinary but more novel than front-page references, but the differences are small. Furthermore, they lead to very different results when investigating how basicness, interdisciplinarity, novelty, and scientific citations affect patent citations.

This paper present the main findings of evaluation of the fellowship program carried-out by "Carol I" National Defence University. Some of the findings have been reported at the final conference of the project "SmartSPODAS" and full report is available at the web page of the project. Evaluation of doctoral and postdoctoral fellowship program represents an important feedback-tool for administration and project management staff, in order to find the proper solutions for improves the management of research activities and educational services designed for students. Taking into consideration that the experience of all persons involved in this assessed program is a novelty one we appreciate more the utility of evaluation process of the program. A student satisfaction questionnaire was applied to a total of 119 students, consisting of 80 PhD students and 39 postdoctoral researchers. Fellows' satisfaction was measured by asking students to respond to 47 questionnaire items. Multiple regression method was applied to the collected data in order to explore the relationships among the students' satisfaction as dependent variable and other analysed variables as predictors. The main findings revealed that "the professionalism/competence of teaching staff" and "applicability/usage of knowledge" have the strongest impact on how satisfied a student is with his/her overall educational and research experience. Besides students' opinion as quantitative method of analysis the evaluation of the project comprises also a qualitative component of analysis, the opinion of doctoral advisers who were asked to share their in-depth view regarding their research experience and management duties. Even though there were reported some weaknesses of the project, for majority of respondents, the research fellowship program was much appreciated for increasing the managerial competency in their specific research field.

Abstract:
At present, there are many researches on the cognitive performance of digital interface information at home and abroad, but there are relatively few researches on the influence of interface beauty factors on the performance in the news web interface environment. This study selects three factors of interface beauty factors, namely balance factor, symmetry factor and density factor, as the variables of this study, to explore the influence of interface beauty factors on the cognitive performance of news web interface visual information. The research is divided into two parts: interface beauty factor calculation and interface visual information cognitive performance experiment. The results show that there is no obvious linear relationship between the three factors and visual information cognitive performance, but the model formulas of interface balance, interface symmetry, interface density and average reaction time can be obtained by quadratic curve fitting. The results are of great significance to guide designers to design and evaluate the news web page interface in a quantitative way from the perspective of improving information cognitive performance.

Abstract:
Blended Learning Concept designates a form of mixed education, that combines traditional teaching methods with tools of communication technology. In the pre-university educational system in Romania the traditional process of teaching and learning is more often used; thus, the student is studying in a certain classroom in an educational unit, being supervised by a teacher. The fast pace of e-learning development determines the emergence and use in the Romanian educational space of a new context for learning, the Blended Learning method, a new learning space, student centred. The group of Web 2.0 technologies (blog, wiki page, podcast, RSS feeds) have changed the way interpersonal communication takes place, this new perspective being associated with a rich repertoire of services and applications, creating a new context for viewing, accessing and producing information. Blended learning method thus becomes a viable alternative to traditional education methods. The main change registered in accessing the method of mixed learning is the reconfiguration of the role of the teacher and student - teacher relationship; it is recommended to adopt certain roles of the users, both in terms of their pedagogical function as well as accessing/configuring online rights. Therefore, the new environment which is constantly evolving, its development plans will be analysed. The research employed a mixed method of analysis, triangulating the data from 10 interviews realised with teachers from urban school community. Whenever data is available, the paper uses a comparative perspective with other EU countries (Finland, France, Germany), particularly regarding the BL methodology in educational process.

Abstract:
Everyone wants to be happy. Over the ages, tracts of the ancient moral philosophers – Plato, Aristotle, Confucius – have probed the question of happiness. The stirring words in the preamble to the Declaration of Independence that established ‘Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness’ as ‘unalienable Rights’ served as the inspiration that launched a nation, the United States of America. Yet, more than 240 years later, the relationship between government’s objectives and human happiness is not straightforward, even over the matters of whether it can and should be a government aim. We approach this question not as philosophers, but as social scientists seeking to understand happiness through data. Our work in these pages is intended to enhance understanding of how the well-being of individuals and societies is affected by myriad forces, among them: income, inflation, governance, genes, inflation, inequality, bereavement, biology, aspirations, unemployment, recession, economic growth, life expectancies, infant mortality, war and conflict, family and social networks, and mental and physical health and health care. Our report suggests the ways in which this information might be brought to bear to rethink traditional aims and definitions of socioeconomic progress, and to create a better – and, yes, happier – world. We explain what the data say to us: our times demand new approaches. Foreword by Richard Easterlin; Introduced by Diane Coyle.

Abstract:
Gram-negative plant pathogenic bacteria employ specialized type-III secretion systems (TTSS) to deliver an arsenal of pathogenicity proteins directly into host cells. These secretion systems are encoded by hrp genes (for hypersensitive response and pathogenicity) and the effector proteins by so-called dsp or avr genes. The functions of effectors are to enable bacterial multiplication by damaging host cells and/or by blocking host defenses. We characterized essential hrp gene clusters in the Stewart's Wilt of maize pathogen, Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii (Pnss; formerly Erwinia stewartii) and the gall-forming bacterium, Pantoea agglomerans (formerly Erwinia herbicola) pvs. gypsophilae (Pag) and betae (Pab). We proposed that the virulence and host specificity of these pathogens is a function of a) the perception of specific host signals resulting in bacterial hrp gene expression and b) the action of specialized signal proteins (i.e. Hrp effectors) delivered into the plant cell. The specific objectives of the proposal were: 1) How is the expression of the hrp and effector genes regulated in response to host cell contact and the apoplastic environment? 2) What additional effector proteins are involved in pathogenicity? 3) Do the presently known Pantoea effector proteins enter host cells? 4) What host proteins interact with these effectors? We characterized the components of the hrp regulatory cascade (HrpXY ->7 HrpS ->7 HrpL ->7 hrp promoters), showed that they are conserved in both Pnss and Fag, and discovered that the regulation of the hrpS promoter (hrpSp) may be a key point in integrating apoplastic signals. We also analyzed the promoters recognized by HrpL and demonstrated the relationship between their composition and efficiency. Moreover, we showed that promoter strength can influence disease expression. In Pnss, we found that the HrpXY two-component signal system may sense the metabolic status of the bacterium and is required for full hrp gene expression in planta. In both species, acyl-homoserine lactone-mediated quorum sensing may also regulate epiphytic fitness and/or pathogenicity. A common Hrp effector protein, DspE/WtsE, is conserved and required for virulence of both species. When introduced into corn cells, Pnss WtsE protein caused water-soaked lesions. In other plants, it either caused cell death or acted as an Avr determinant. Using a yeast- two-hybrid system, WtsE was shown to interact with a number of maize signal transduction proteins that are likely to have roles in either programmed cell death or disease resistance. In Pag and Pab, we have characterized the effector proteins HsvG, HsvB and PthG. HsvG and HsvB are homologous proteins that determine host specificity of Pag and Pab on gypsophila and beet, respectively. Both possess a transcriptional activation domain that functions in yeast. PthG was found to act as an Avr determinant on multiple beet species, but was required for virulence on gypsophila. In addition, we demonstrated that PthG acts within the host cell. Additional effector genes have been characterized on the pathogenicity plasmid, pPATHₚₐg, in Pag. A screen for HrpL- regulated genes in Pnsspointed up 18 candidate effector proteins and four of these were required for full virulence. It is now well established that the virulence of Gram-negative plant pathogenic bacteria is governed by Hrp-dependent effector proteins. However; the mode of action of many effectors is still unresolved. This BARD supported research will significantly contribute to the understanding of how Hrp effectors operate in Pantoea spp. and how they control host specificity and affect symptom production. This may lead to novel approaches for genetically engineering plants resistant to a wide range of bacterial pathogens by inactivating the Hrp effectors with "plantabodies" or modifying their receptors, thereby blocking the induction of the susceptible response. Alternatively, innovative technologies could be used to interfere with the Hrp regulatory cascade by blocking a critical step or mimicking plant or quorum sensing signals.

Udo-Udo Jacob, Jacob. Researching Violent Extremism: Considerations, Reflections, and Perspectives. Edited by Kateira Aryaeinejad, Alastair Reed, and Emma Heywood. RESOLVE Network, May 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.37805/rve2023.1.

Abstract:
As the nature of violent extremism continues to evolve—both locally and globally—research is essential in our efforts to craft better policy and programming aimed at preventing and addressing it. Research provides information that can help answer some of our most pressing questions about the phenomenon so that we can craft informed and contextually appropriate solutions and avoid potentially negative outcomes. However, while the body of knowledge from research on violent extremism has notably increased and expanded, there is still more to know, learn, and understand, especially given the pace at which global and local dynamics evolve. Using and understanding research on violent extremism goes beyond just reading a research report or journal article. Instead, one must also understand the processes, data, and decisions behind the research and how they may have impacted the findings. This edited volume includes chapters providing unique insight and honest, collective reflection on experiences with conducting research on violent extremism, including the challenges of data collection, choosing research and analysis methods, and managing and building research relationships. These reflections are helpful for those conducting research, those using research to make policy and programmatic decisions, and those seeking to better understand research findings. The chapters not only walk readers through some of the perspectives, insights, methods, and thought processes behind research in this field, they also provide important food for thought for those seeking to undertake or improve their own research on violent extremism and for those using research findings to inform their own policy or programmatic decisions.
