Abstract:
The main purpose of search engines, which support the task of Information Retrieval, is to provide the users with an easy method to find information on the Web. Despite their advantages, Web search engines still have numerous limitations. Several works have been done to enhance information access systems and offer a better user experience in different fields such as distributed and contextual information retrieval, link analysis and exploratory search. This thesis deals with Web Information Foraging, which is a recent information access paradigm that aims at discovering paths leading to relevant information on the Web. The principal goal of the research undertaken during the Ph.D. has been to design and implement effective and efficient Information Foraging systems based on multi-agent technology. For this purpose, we investigated Information Foraging in different domains including health, scientific publications and social media. To address this issue, we proposed a modular architecture with two important phases for the Information Foraging system to be developed. The first phase is a learning process, which aims to locate the most relevant Web pages that might interest the user according to his/her interests. This can be performed on a fixed instance of the Web. The second phase takes into account the openness and dynamicity of the Web and it consists of an incremental learning starting from the results of the first phase and reshaping the outcomes taking into account the changes that occur on the Web. The whole system offers a tool to help users access information online easily. The development of the system went through three important steps, where different concepts and technologies were used in order to achieve both effectiveness and efficiency and also to make the system able to operate on various environments.

Web 2.0, the ultimate platform for tacit based knowledge work has finally arrived. User driven, collaborative platform based tools including wikis, web mash-ups, discussion boards, linkage based search engines, and tagging have the potential to vastly change how information is managed and how knowledge work is captured. This thesis investigates how the new paradigms and tools of Web 2.0 can be applied to the Pharmaceutical Industry and assist with information management at The Novartis Institute for BioMedical Research (NIBR). Applying Web 2.0 tools to NIBR's chemical compounds, targets, assays, people, and projects in a well thought out framework has the potential to yield tremendous productivity improvements in the drug discovery process. Effectively harnessing the collective intelligence of thousands of scientists within Novartis's worldwide research network will enable a paradigm shift. A large, extremely knowledgeable user community can more effectively annotate metadata, hyperlink to important content, establish tags, and collectively author content. Such activities will not only improve the search ability of information but also allow important scientific connections to emerge linking biology to chemistry and furthering Novartis's understanding of disease.

Abstract:
Surfing the web has moved from the stationary computers to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. As the technology moves further and more devices comes out on the market this is a trend that will continue. This makes it more important for web developers to adapt and make their websites fit not only for one device. The website needs to fit all devices. Since many of these devices are using wireless connections, the website performance has also become even more important in order to give the users a good experience.   Responsive web design is an approach for designing and developing web pages. By using the three techniques of flexible grid layout, flexible images and media, and media queries, websites can get a design that fits all devices. Responsive web techniques will also make the web page perform better on each device since it makes the web page adapt to its environment. There are several performance techniques that can be applied to a website in order to increase performance and loading time. Responsive web design including performance techniques can together make a great impact on a website's loading speed and user experience.   This thesis embraces this approach for web development. By developing a design theory, a website emerges where these approaches of web development have been implemented. During the development of the website the experiences implementing this approach and techniques is discussed. The website developed for this thesis was able to finish loading below 4 seconds on a mobile device using a 3G connection. We argue that responsive web design and performance techniques can help a website immensely to increase its user experience and performance.

Nilsson, Malin, and Louise Lantz. "Product Return Process : Developing a Web-Based Return Form to Improve the Information Flow between an Apparel Company and Its Retailers." Thesis, Högskolan i Borås, Institutionen Textilhögskolan, 2012. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hb:diva-16803.

Full text
Abstract:
Handling product returns has become a critical activity for organizations as the volume of gods flowing back through the supply chain rapidly increases. Few research studies have published specific empirical data concerning the reverse logistics practices of companies. Information technology and information support has long been recognized as a competitive weapon – capable of enhancing company performance and achieving efficient reverse logistics. Reverse logistics is very unlike the forward, as it is more reactive and also has less visibility. Unlike forward logistics, incoming products from reverse logistics are not tracked broadly because of the lack of information systems resources necessary. The investigated apparel company in this study is operating on the global market and expands their sales twenty per cent each year, resulting in increased pressure in the return flow. To meet this future demands, the return process has to be more efficient and not so time consuming. This study emerged from a case study made at the return department of this apparel company based on a research question. An improvement area was discovered through interviews, internal documents and observations. This area was investigated in existing theories through books and scientific research papers. From the theories and the case study, a hypothesis was created in order to be tested. To strengthen the hypothesis, an experiment was developed and performed at selected retailers and at the apparel company.Research Question Where in the product return process can improvements be made in order to make the information flow more efficient between retailers and an apparel company?HypothesisBy creating a web-based return form, the information flow between retailers and an apparel company will be more efficient, resulting in a more effective and structured product return process.Through the experiment, various factors that strengthen the hypothesis were discovered. For instance, the information flow becomes more effective when retailers have clear guidelines how to send back products and when inserting the information into the computer system before returning. As the apparel company knows what is coming back, the disposition of returned products can be predetermined which will speed up the return process. Shared and available information across various parties facilitate the daily work with better communication. Furthermore, activities that are existing today within the return process can be eliminated which result in more effective product return process. Refund for retailers can be made quicker which result in more satisfied retailers and creates stronger relationships.

Abstract:
The evolution of digitization permeates large parts of society where information technology has contributed to previously unthinkable possibilities and benefits. At present, organizations have rationalized most business processes where technology is considered to be a fundamental starting point. The advancement of information technology brings about changes in communication where the concept of interoperability is introduced as: collaboration between two or more systems with the purpose of exchanging information. In addition, circular economics have gained more attention in recent years, the purpose of which is to improve the problem of resource management and recycling. This study aims to provide the basis for the design of an information system, supported by an interoperability framework, with the purpose of supporting co-transport activities. This has been done using a qualitative research effort where interviews have been used as a data collection method in which the study has been delimited to micro, small and medium-sized organizations. These are located within a sparsely populated municipality in Sweden, where business representatives from Orust Municipality contributed empirical data.

Abstract:

This essay explores how men and women in different age groups experiences Flashapplications, depending on their perception of colour and form. The participants, teenagers at a junior high school, students who just have finished their degree and senior citizens have by answering a form and by taking part in a semi structured interview been able to express their opinion of the following Scandinavian web pages: Santa Maria, Ecco and Indiska.

The participants identify the flash objects by their movements. The participants want to be able to choose weather or not to see the animations and other applications created in Flash, to avoid loosing focus on the other information the trademarks wants to express. The students have the most critical approach to colour, form and the use of Flash objects. The female participants have a more liberal approach to colour and form then the male participants.

Abstract:
The Cognitive Walkthrough for the Web (CWW) is a Usability Evaluation Method that can be used as an approach to evaluate a website. Unfortunately, the original formulation of CWW has been applied by researchers in the area as a set of a semi-manual processes, which have proven to be extremely time-consuming, and as with any semi-manual process, error-prone. This thesis presents a web-based approach to automate CWW, which we call ACWW. The automation of these processes implies, on the one hand, that researchers can reduce the amount of time dedicated to computing the results associated with performing various analyses. On the other hand, it implies that the accuracy of computed results can be improved. ACWW is available from http://autocww.colorado.edu/~brownr/. Finally, ACWW has been mentioned in a paper by Dr. Marilyn Blackmon, a leader in usability research, at the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI) in April of 2005 [Blackmon05].

Abstract:
The rapid growth of text based information on the World Wide Web and various applications making use of this data motivates the need for efficient and effective methods to identify and separate the “main content” from the additional content items, such as navigation menus, advertisements, design elements or legal disclaimers. Firstly, in this thesis, we study, develop, and evaluate R2L, DANA, DANAg, and AdDANAg, a family of novel algorithms for extracting the main content of web documents. The main concept behind R2L, which also provided the initial idea and motivation for the other three algorithms, is to use well particularities of Right-to-Left languages for obtaining the main content of web pages. As the English character set and the Right-to-Left character set are encoded in different intervals of the Unicode character set, we can efficiently distinguish the Right-to-Left characters from the English ones in an HTML file. This enables the R2L approach to recognize areas of the HTML file with a high density of Right-to-Left characters and a low density of characters from the English character set. Having recognized these areas, R2L can successfully separate only the Right-to-Left characters. The first extension of the R2L, DANA, improves effectiveness of the baseline algorithm by employing an HTML parser in a post processing phase of R2L for extracting the main content from areas with a high density of Right-to-Left characters. DANAg is the second extension of the R2L and generalizes the idea of R2L to render it language independent. AdDANAg, the third extension of R2L, integrates a new preprocessing step to normalize the hyperlink tags. The presented approaches are analyzed under the aspects of efficiency and effectiveness. We compare them to several established main content extraction algorithms and show that we extend the state-of-the-art in terms of both, efficiency and effectiveness. Secondly, automatically extracting the headline of web articles has many applications. We develop and evaluate a content-based and language-independent approach, TitleFinder, for unsupervised extraction of the headline of web articles. The proposed method achieves high performance in terms of effectiveness and efficiency and outperforms approaches operating on structural and visual features

Abstract:
The use of information technologies to plan activities and monitor through the geographical position, whether during the distribution, delivery or geolocation of orders has become quite important today. Consequently, the present project proposes an automation of the distribution process through web and mobile GIS technology solutions, based on the analysis of the activities carried out in said process. The objective of this proposal is to reduce the manual tasks that are carried out in this process, as well as to enable a means of real-time monitoring of the distributors and customer orders. To achieve the proposal, a conceptualization and analysis of the company is carried out using the Zachman frameworks at level 1 and 2 and TOGAF, in this way the problematic situation, the project objectives and indicators of success are identified. This information was the basis for diagramming the current processes and those improved with the use of BPMN. Then, to design the technological solutions, requirements engineering was used to finally translate that analysis into four-level architecture diagrams using the C4 model as a guide. Finally, the PMBOK guide is used to manage the project, which as a result allowed to plan the activities, estimate the execution times and the costs involved in the implementation of the automation proposal.

Presents an intervention in the regime of information in the camp of archives Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB), with goal to promote dissemination of archival information produced by the Standing Committee of Document Evaluation (CPAD), on scope the Campus I institution's, by building of one virtual space communication in the web and of actions of information appropriate. Broaches the process of mediation information in organizations as a set of information actions established based on the relations between the subjects and the networks Socio-communicational primary and secondary formed in the context of information regime that, through the resources offered by the infrastructure of cyberspace, are grouped into a single information environment in a form dynamic and effective. These actions are developed during the stages of production, organization and dissemination of information on the web, to which are find on collaboration of nature multidisciplinary between Marketing and Information Architecture for the web, the essential conditions for achieving the goals according to the characteristics and information needs of users. Accordingly, we used the methodology of action research so that permits the opinions, needs and experiences of subjects involved in the process of document management of CPAD to be considered regarding the planning and implementation of information actions. We departed from the application of semi-structured interview to obtain subsidies for the production and organization of information available on the web, following to the record of users' opinion regarding the evaluation of the information architecture of the website and then, ending with dissemination of information available on the web (website) through direct marketing. We conclude that both the construction of the website institutional of CPAD, as regards to the content of information architecture, regarding its dissemination, met the expectations of the servers involved in document management, as well as assisted in the promotion of CPAD within the institution, that is, giving visibility to the Table of Temporality document (TTD), the archival information and, especially, management practices that comprise the life cycle of documents.

Abstract:
Gamification - is a methodology that enchants on-games context with game mechanics and game design. Document is a study of project management system gamification. Project management system is gamified by adding game layer to it. Paper introduces “Trogon” project management systems based on three-layer architecture. Paper overviews project management systems gamifications. According to a formal system description gamification is a set G, which consists of game elements and relevant parts of project management system. Technical view into gamification solution implementation consists of two parts - data classes and visualization classes. This model of gamification can be applied to any system that implements gamification data contract. In this paper we have described the performed quality analysis of the system, during which a study was done of system maintenance metrics and their changes in different versions of the system. Different versions study allows us to determine system compliance with second and fourth Lehman laws. Following a detailed assessment of system final version determined system maintenance metrics and possible system maintainability improvements. Experimental study consists of two parts: color analysis of several system pages in compliance with WCAG 2.0 contrast ratio requirements for accessibility and gamification usability evaluation. For color analysis paper proposes a new methodology for evaluation color contrast ratio requirements of pages using... [to full text]

Presents a focused study on aspects related e-Accessibility and Information Architecture (AI) for Web contained in online catalogs, also known as Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). The objective is to evaluate whether international accessibility guidelines and assumptions of AI are being contemplated. From the bibliographical project, resting on the exploratory and descriptive methods, we chose the case study as a research strategy. The analyzed sample is in the OPAC of the Management Academic Activities System (SIGAA) of the Federal University of Paraiba (UFPB). Involves the combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches, respectively, based on the verbal assessment of blind students with the OPAC and the automatic analysis of Web Accessibility. With the combination of scientific methods tool, carried out a triangulation between methods or intermethods capable to bring the holistic result expected for the phenomenon under study. It was concluded that the OPAC system SIGAA specifically UFPB, needs to pass through reformulations that meet international accessibility guidelines for Web, since it doesn t pass in the test battery with minimum level recommended by WCAG 2.0 document and in many respects was rated unfavorably by the research participants. Regarding the assumptions of AI for the Web that are contained in the OPAC , assessing that need to be better implemented in the environment , given that many participants found it difficult to interact with the OPAC as a result of informational complexity.

Abstract:
The World Wide Web provides a well standing environment in any kind of organizations for exposing online products and services. However, no one ensures that web products or services which provided by organizations or enterprises, would receive the proper visibility and accessibility by the internet users. The process of Search Engine Optimization examines usability in design, architecture and content that an internet-based system has, for improving its visibility and accessibility in the web. Successful SEO process in an internet-based system, which is set under the paternity of an organization, ensures higher recognition, visibility and accessibility for the web services that the system provides to internet users. The aim of this study characterized with a trinity of axes. In the first axe, an internet-based system and the web services that provides is examined in order to understand its initial situation regarding its visibility and accessibility in the web. In the second axe, the study follows a user-centric approach on how and in what way the examined system could be improved based on its users’ needs and desires. After the encapsulation of needs and desires that the users expressed as regards the usability of the system in design, architecture and content, the third axe takes place. In the third axe, the extracted needs and desires of users are implemented in the under-examined system, in order to understand if its visibility and accessibility has improved in the World Wide Web.For the completion of this trinity of axes, the Soft Systems Methodology approach is adopted. SSM is an action-oriented process of inquiry which deals with a problematic situation from the Finding Out about the situation through the Taking Action to improve it. Following an interpretative research approach, ten semi-structured interviews take place in order to capture all the participants’ perceptions and different worldviews regarding of what are the changes that they need and desire from the examined system. Moreover, in this study, the conduction of three Workshops, constitute a cornerstone for implementing systemically desirable and culturally feasible changes where all participants can live with, in order to improve system’s visibility and accessibility in the internet world. The results indicate that the adoption of participants’ needs and desires, improved the levels of usability, visibility and accessibility of the under examined internet-based system. Overall, this study firstly contributes to expand the knowledge as regards the process of improving the visibility and accessibility of internet-based systems and their web services in the internet world, based on a user-centric approach. Secondly, this study works as a practical toolbox for any kind of organization which intends to improve the visibility and accessibility of its current or potential web services in the World Wide Web.

Abstract:
In a world subject to the changes that technology brings, journalism is obliged to go through a process of conversion to migrate from paper to the web and become a means of high diffusion. The job of journalist is now related with merging the concept of dynamism and immediacy, a remarkable feature of the internet, delivering to the readers quality, truthful and proven news. In addition, the journalist should include web positioning tools (SEO) that allow to locate the content in the first results of search engines such as Google and, in this way, reach more people. In view of this scenario, the following research has as a significant aim to determine whether the correct application of SEO in digital journalistic writing influences the visibility of the news flow within search engines. To this end, 35 notes published in the digital edition of the peruvian newspaper El Comercio during the pandemic by Covid-19 have been used as the subject of study. An instrument has been designed to evaluate journalistic aspects, as well as positioning and impact tools. As a result, two types of behaviors were observed in the selected notes: the first refers to a set of mass news, published under the general signature of the journal, which favor elements of web optimization, hypertextuality and multimediality to the detriment of other aspects of journalism; while the latter is limited to those notes signed by a journalist, which offers extensive texts, with various sources of information and greater processing, leaving aside positioning techniques. In this way, research concludes that while SEO influences the visibility of news content, the challenge is to incorporate the beneficial elements of traditional journalism into the versatile and still unpredictable digital culture.

Abstract:
The subject of this thesis is the influence of new technologies in the evolution of digital journalism and how its use has altered its traditional hierarchical criteria (in the form of an inverted pyramid, where the main thing was at the beginning and the rest of the note is its development or description). In this case, the research will be based on how the Peruvian media use clickbait for the development of their informative notes and how this use has changed the structure of the news. The online platforms of three media were reviewed: Diario La República as the written press, Radio RPP as the radio press, and América Noticias as the television press; chosen for having been pioneers in their fields in the transition to the digital world and also for the high level of readership and audience. To achieve the proposed objective, a content analysis was carried out with a period of time delimited by the appearance of the zero COVID-19 patient in Peru (March 6), which was the moment when the Peruvian public became aware of that the disease had reached our country; until the beginning of the quarantine was decreed (March 15), the date on which the State reacted and took measures to combat and / or prevent the spread of the virus. The most important finding in the three media is that there is a variation in the structure of the informative notes that contain a clickbait, using a mainly rhomboid hierarchization (writing structure where the main information or the response to the note holder is in the middle and not at the beginning).

Abstract:
Consequently, in this work two areas of knowledge traditionally unrelated to each other are placed in interaction: Information and Documentation Sciences (IDC) and Medieval History. The general purpose of this thesis is to approach Portuguese Medieval Historiography in the turn of the millennium from the perspective of IDC, in order to reach a truly interdisciplinary knowledge of the object of study, allowing to apprehend it through the complementary perspectives of the two interacting fields. On the other hand, the specific objectives of this work are: to conduct a focus group through which we intend to gather, among the scientific community, perceptions and insights on a number of key concepts pertaining to the current state of Portuguese medieval historiography; to develop a bibliometric analysis of the Portuguese academic literature on Medieval History from 2000 to 2010; and, lastly, to develop a controlled vocabulary on Portuguese Medieval History — a taxonomy of a domain — which allows to retrieve information by subject in a digital environment. The methodology guiding the research process was based in the application of multiple methods, triangulating quantitative and qualitative data. The results enriched both disciplinary fields: Portuguese Medieval History, on one hand, gained a general assessment of the most recent scientific literature relevant to its object of study, and a corresponding evolutionary trend; and IDC, on the other hand, especially the information services related to the fields of Medieval Studies, which henceforth have at their disposal a structure of representation of specialised information, which ensures, consistently and uniformly, the indexing, retrieving and sharing of knowledge in the Web.

Abstract:

In 1992, the Web was invented by Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) as an application over the Internet using TCP/IP protocol as stated in the World Wide Web Consortium (WC3). Accessing local IS to process data is no longer appropriate in the revolution of distributed processing. Web environments are heterogeneous and portable. First, the Web was developed for textual publishing purposes. However, in parallel the rapid advances of related technology and the incredible growth of ubiquitous data, the Web has evolved from a static medium for information sharing into an interactive multimedia platform that includes video, sound, animation, with dynamic links. In the light of these advancements, Web accessibility and associated problems (eg. People with deafness), represent a serious obstacle that prohibits people with special needs from accessing telecommunication systems. The Deaf Community’ is almost a closed community that has its own language (i.e. sign language), customs and traditions. There is little research around the world investigating direct machine translation of sign language. To avoid machine translation and associated problems, this thesis built on current Web technology to integrate Signage Information into the Web environment. As part of this integration, it made use of an ‘Intermediary Signage Object’ rather than intermediate transmission of video-based sign language. Finally, this thesis provides a Sign Language Annotation tool. It generates an XML document in order to process signage object content. The Graphical Usage Interface (GUI) contains a display window that plays customized sign language clips according to the sign viewers’ preferences. The Signage Tool extends IBM VideoAnnEx Tool to include sign language attributes and related data. In addition, it has been developed for different types of users involved with the deaf community (i.e. hearing impairment, hard of hearing, and sign language interpreters.)

Abstract:
This research explores an approach to learning types of usability concerns considered useful for the management of Web sites and to identifying usability concerns based on these learned models. By having one or more Web site managers rate a subset of pages in a site based on a number of usability criteria, the approach builds models that determine what automatically measurable characteristics are correlated to issues identified. To test this, the approach collected usability assessments from twelve students pursuing advanced degrees in the area of computer-human interaction. These students were divided into two groups and given different scenarios of use of a Web site. They assessed the usability of Web pages from the site, and their data was divided into a training set, used to find models, and a prediction set, used to evaluate the relative quality of models. Results show that the learned models predicted remaining data for one scenario in more categories of usability than did the single model found under the alternate scenario. Results also show how systems may prioritize usability problems for Web site managers by probability of occurrence under context rather than by merely listing pages that break specific rules, as provided by some current tools.

Abstract:
User Modeling and Machine Learning for User Modeling have both become important research topics and key techniques in recent adaptive systems. One of the most intriguing problems in the `information age´ is how to filter relevant information from the huge amount of available data. This problem is tackled by using models of the user´s interest in order to increase precision and discriminate interesting information from un-interesting data. However, any user modeling approach suffers from several major drawbacks: User models built by the system need to be inspectable and understandable by the user himself. Secondly, users in general are not willing to give feedback concerning user satisfaction by the delivered results. Without any evidence for the user´s interest, it is hard to induce a hypothetical user model at all. Finally, most current systems do not draw a line of distinction between domain knowledge and user model which makes the adequacy of a user model hard to determine. This thesis presents the novel approach of conceptual user models. Conceptual user models are easy to inspect and understand and allow for the system to explain its actions to the user. It is shown, that ILP can be applied for the task of inducing user models from feedback, and a method for using mutual feedback for sample enlargement is introduced. Results are evaluated independently of domain knowledge within a clear machine learning problem definition. The whole concept presented is realized in a meta web search engine called OySTER.

Abstract:
This dissertation is a report on a study to investigate the design and development of a digital information literacy program (DILP) for an academic library. The study is concerned with the exploration of the generic profile of the South African student at higher education institutions. The criteria for a digital information literacy program were also established. Based on the criteria and the profile of the students, the digital information literacy program was designed and developed. The research objectives were to * determine a generic profile of the South African student (as a member of Generation Y). * determine the criteria for an information literacy programme (ILP). * determine the criteria that a digital information literacy program should comply with (based on the criteria for a ILP). * design a digital information literacy program by documenting the elements and principles of design, navigation features, site architecture, etcetera. * develop a digital information literacy program by documenting the specific learning objectives and content and creating the Web based program. The study comprises a qualitative research approach and is concerned with the qualities and the characteristics of a phenomenon for better understanding and explanation. A critical analysis of reported research and literature forms the foundation of the study. The design and development of a digital information literacy program were based on the guidelines for Web based instruction in academic libraries. The results of the research enabled the researcher to design and develop the digital information literacy program, by integrating the following: * Characteristics of Generation Y * The criteria for a digital information literacy program * Factors important for designing in a Web environment, namely interactivity, site architecture, navigation features, principles of design, elements of design, incorporating media and learner levels * Authoring, technical aspects and the evaluating and testing of the prototype. The digital information literacy program is designed to provide academic libraries at higher education institutions with a product - a Web published CD - that they can use as is, or adapt according to their specific needs or circumstances, in order to support their students' digital information literacy skills.

Gil-Campos, Teresa Lucia. "Impacts of Information Technology (IT) Systems on the Efficiency of Empty-Container Park Operations for the Port of Melbourne." Thesis, 2016. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/31013/.

Full text
Abstract:
As disclosed by the Port of Melbourne Corporation in 2015, full import containers significantly outnumber full export containers in the port of Melbourne, indicating that the port has become a major import container location experiencing acute pressures to manage the disequilibrium in trade flows. The report further points to increased container volumes through the port of Melbourne over the decade 2005-2015 – an increase of 650,000 twenty-foot containers. This growth in port-related containerised volumes creates capacity constraints in landside transport infrastructures and container parks’ facilities resulting from increased truck movements in and around the port of Melbourne. As specified by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission in 2011, these capacity constraints at container parks resulted from random truck arrivals patterns, which caused depots to alternate periods of low truck traffic activity with periods of excess demand that generated major delays. Also, transport carriers often arrived at container parks to be notified of the unavailability of stocks to attend to empty collections, that is, futile trips occurred on a regular basis. In this line, previous industry studies had noted in as early as 2004 and 2005 the need to implement a vehicle booking system with a view to deliver superior visibility and thus operational gains for the empty-container supply chain in an effort to address the capacity challenges already experienced in and around the port of Melbourne. This thesis examines the proposition that the adoption of information technology is central in integrating and thus streamlining container chain operations resulting in superior supply chain efficiency. For this purpose this research will explore, in a detailed case study, the adoption of the Containerchain portal by some of the empty-container parks in the port of Melbourne. In particular, this thesis seeks to shed light on the impacts this web-based application is having on the integration of chain activities and operational chain efficiency given differentiated empty-container parks and empty-container chains.

Abstract:
During the last decade, music recording and production tools, social media, and platforms for selling and listening to music in streaming have radically transformed the industry of recorded music. The decline of album sales and new models of music production, distribution, and promotion have directly affected the traditional actors of the music industry such as record labels. While some predicted that these changes would bring an end to the records labels at the benefit of self-production and self-promotion, others suggested that independent record labels could become an essential part of this new environment, provided they adapt to it and develop new services and an expertise that meet the artists’ needs. This master thesis explores the visibility of independent Quebec music artists on the social web and the role record labels plays in it. In this multiple case study, four independent Quebec music labels were selected. In-depht interviews were conducted with the Web project managers of these music labels to discuss their perception and their usage of Web platforms, as well as the strategies they employ to increase the visibility on the Web of the artistes they represent. Observational data of the Web activities of the four music labels were also collected.

Abstract:
A fundamental change in societal values and economic structures is required to address increasing pressures on ecosystems and natural resources. Transition research has developed in the last decades to analyze the co-dynamics of technological, institutional, social and economic elements in the provision of key functions such as energy, water and food supply. This doctoral dissertation provides conceptual and methodological contributions to the pro-active governance of sustainability transitions. Three research gaps are identified that are addressed in this dissertation. First, a comprehensive conceptualization of learning in sustainability transitions is currently missing that comprises learning at multiple societal levels (ranging from individuals to policy-actors). Learning concepts are often not explicitly discussed in transition research even though learning is considered as fundamental for innovation processes, niche formation and development as well as breakthrough and diffusion of innovations. Second, methods for the analysis and design of transition governance processes are lacking that specify case-specific intervention points and roles of actors in the implementation of innovations. Third, participatory modeling approaches are only applied to a limited extent in transition research despite a high potential for supporting communication and learning. The conceptualization of multi-level learning developed in this doctoral research conceptualizes learning at different societal levels as specific learning contexts ranging from individual and group contexts to organizational and policy contexts. The conceptual framework further differentiates between learning processes, intensity, objects, outcomes, subjects and factors, allowing for a more detailed analysis of learning within and across learning contexts. Thus, learning contexts can be linked by processes that involve actors from different learning contexts (e.g., community groups and policy-makers), as well as exchanges of physical aspects, institutions and knowledge (in the form of ‘learning factors’). This research has also provided a classification of model uses in transition research that supports a purposeful discussion of the opportunities of modeling and promising future research directions. The methodology developed in this doctoral research aims at the analysis and design of transition governance processes by specifying the various opportunities to contribute to sustainability transitions through purposeful action at different societal levels, as well as related roles of stakeholders in implementing such processes of change. The methodology combines different streams of previous research: 1) a participatory modeling approach to identify problem perceptions, case-specific sustainability innovations as well as related implementation barriers, drivers and responsibilities; 2) a systematic review to identify supportive and impeding learning factors from the general literature that can complement case-specific factors; and 3) a method for the analysis and design of case-specific transition governance processes. Three case studies in Canada (topic: sustainable food systems), Cyprus (water-energy-food nexus) and Germany (sustainable heating supply) have been selected to test and iteratively develop the methodology described above. The results for each case study reveal that there are learning objects (i.e., learning requirements) in all learning contexts, which underscores the importance of multi-level learning in sustainability transitions, ranging from the individual to the group, organizational and policy levels. Actors have various opportunities to actively facilitate societal transformations towards sustainable development either directly through actions at their particular societal levels (i.e., context-internal learning) or indirectly through actions that influence learning at other societal levels. In fact, most of the learning factors require cooperation across learning contexts during the implementation process. The comparing of learning factors across case studies underline the importance of several factor categories, such as ‘physical a ‘disturbance or crisis’, ‘information and knowledge’. Of the 206 factors identified by stakeholders, 40 factors are case-specific and not contained in the general, review-based factor list. This underscores the value of participatory research, as general, top-down analyses might have overlooked these case-specific factors. The methodology presented in this dissertation allows for the identification and analysis of case-specific intervention points for sustainability transitions at multiple societal levels. The methodology furthermore permits the analysis of interplay between individual, group, organizational and policy actions, which is a first step towards their coordination. The focus on sustainability innovations links the broad topic of sustainability transitions to a set of opportunities for practical interventions and overcoming their implementation barriers. The methodology presented allows for the analysis and design of these interlinkages between learning contexts. While the methodology cannot provide any ‘silver bullets’ for inducing sustainability transitions, it is flexible enough to identify an appropriate abstraction level for analyzing and designing transition governance processes. The methodology developed in this doctoral research also provides several contributions for the development of participatory modeling methods in transition research. Thus, the participatory method supports an integrated analysis of barriers and drivers of sustainability innovations, and allows application in practice and education. The concepts and methods developed in this research project allow for reflection on transition governance processes from a systemic viewpoint. Experiences in the case studies underline the applicability of the concepts and methods developed for the analysis of case-specific transition governance processes. Despite substantial differences in the geographic location, culture and topics addressed, all case studies include promising sustainability innovations and the engagement of multiple actors in their implementation. The diversity and multitude of initiatives in the case study regions provides an optimistic outlook on future opportunities for large-scale sustainability transitions.
