Abstract:
The Web Information System (WIS) is a new type of Web browser capable of retrieving and displaying the physical attributes (retrieval time, age, size) of a digital document. In addition, the WIS can display the status of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) links using an interface that is easy to use and interpret. The WIS also has the ability to dynamically update HTML links, thereby informing the user regarding the status of the information. The first generation of World Web browsers allowed for the retrieval and rendering of HTML documents for reading and printing. These browsers also provided basic management of HTML links, which are used to point to often-used information. Unfortunately, HTML links are static in nature -- other than a locator for information, an HTML link provides no other useful data. Because of the elusive characteristics of electronic information, document availability, document size (page length), and absolute age of the information can only be assessed after retrieval. WIS addresses the shortcomings of the Web by using a different approach to delivering digital information within a Web browser. By attributing the physical parameters of printed documentation such as retrieval time, age, and size to digital information, the WIS makes using online information easier and more productive than the current method.

Abstract:

The web has a broad affect on the global economy and can among other things be used for web based information systems (WIS). These systems have grown from being used as a market platform to support all activities in the work of an organisation of today. To survive in a turbulent competitive environment, companies must start to cooperate with their customers instead of just collaborate with them. Can an IT-consultant company use a WIS as a tool for keeping in contact with existing customers to attain this cooperation? A WIS could strengthen the relation between customer and supplier and through that have a possibility to increase the customer use since it can facilitate business processes and imply that services can be offered in a new way. WIS have however been characterized by lack of use and not having the expected effects on the business. The reason for this is that only a technical perspective has been taken when they have been developed and implemented, without consideration to organisational circumstances. When taking these facts into consideration, is it possible that a WIS can increase the customer use in the relation between customer and supplier? How does the customer view a WIS and what requirements would s/he have regarding the information content in such a system?

The purpose with this thesis is that through a demand analysis during pre-study, congregate possible customer requirements regarding the information content in a potential WIS, with consideration taken to the need of how information is communicated, with the intention of increasing the customer use in the relation between customer and supplier.

The pre-study took a qualitative form and consisted of deep interviews with ten potential users of a WIS. The system could function as a bridge between them and their ITconsultant company, Sigma. Sigma is the employer of this thesis. The theory that has been set as the base for the thesis can be mirrored against four building stones which can be distinguished in the purpose; information content, information handling, customer relationships and customer use. Except from these, we have also included theory regarding WIS in the aim to clarify this type of system. The study showed that there were customer requirements concerning a WIS, in the primary aim of keeping the contact with Sigma. The most prioritised function was education in the form of manuals to prior systems that Sigma had developed on the behalf of the customers. Project handling was then prioritised, in the form of among other things follow-up on projects and joint handling of documents. The customers also regarded that customer service and reports of defects, together with a vocabulary were good functions to include in a WIS. The customers considered that the handling of information could be more structured if a WIS was implemented, but most of them thought that their relation to Sigma would stay unchanged. The customer use with a WIS was regarded to principally be easier access to information for both customer and Sigma, current information and better support together with better service from Sigma.

Abstract:
Advances in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and the drastic growth of the Internet over the past decade have considerably changed the environment for end users of computer systems. Therefore, it is important to review how user satisfaction is measured with information systems, especially in a web-based environment. User satisfaction has become one of the most important measures of the success or effectiveness of information systems; however, there is a need of better understanding of its structure and dimensionality in the web environment. The objective of this research was to develop and validate an instrument for measuring user satisfaction in a web-based environment. In this research, three commercial websites were taken as representatives of Web-Based Information Systems (WBIS) for e-services. This study involved testing the validity and reliability of the end-user satisfaction over a set of heuristics, based on responses from users of three e-service websites. This thesis explores not only the role of user satisfaction but also the role of aesthetics and other factors, which play a significant role in service oriented websites. In the past, satisfaction was thought to originate from the effectiveness and efficiency of a product and less from its aesthetic qualities. This theory is beginning to change as numerous studies have indicated the importance of visual aesthetics in web design. In service interfaces, aesthetics (the perceived visual appeal and appropriateness of an object) has shown to correlate positively with many aspects of usability and emotional satisfaction.

Siau, Nor Zainah. "A teachable semi-automatic web information extraction system based on evolved regular expression patterns." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2014. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/14687.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores Web Information Extraction (WIE) and how it has been used in decision making and to support businesses in their daily operations. The research focuses on a WIE system based on Genetic Programming (GP) with an extensible model to enhance the automatic extractor. This uses a human as a teacher to identify and extract relevant information from the semi-structured HTML webpages. Regular expressions, which have been chosen as the pattern matching tool, are automatically generated based on the training data to provide an improved grammar and lexicon. This particularly benefits the GP system which may need to extend its lexicon in the presence of new tokens in the web pages. These tokens allow the GP method to produce new extraction patterns for new requirements.

Nowadays, every single company needs to operate with large amount of data to support daily operation. Although there is pretty good market offer with information systems for managing various kinds of data, only small part of them is suitable for the company that does not deal with sale of goods but provides services, particularly marketing services or IT services (e.g. programming). This thesis describes the design and development of such a system which has a main goal to satisfy the needs of small to medium companies whose needs are still different than what currently marketed products can offer. Such a system will, apart from other functions, be able to manage projects and track work time of employees.

Romano, Nicholas Charles 1963. "A Web-based system for collaboration." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/288860.

Full text
Abstract:
Today's complex environmental and organizational pressures lead to business teams distributed along the dimensions of space, time, and computing resources. Distributed teams often need to collaborate to solve complex problems together. Many information systems support simple information sharing, however group research has shown that productive problem solving extends far beyond this. Group Support Systems (GSS) researchers and product reviewers suggest that simple discussion tools fall short of supporting additional phases of group problem solving. Research into distributed collaboration is needed to understand this complex domain. This dissertation describes an investigation into distributed collaboration to design, develop, implement, evaluate, and iteratively refine a prototype World-Wide-Web (Web) based distributed GSS. The research addresses requirements derivation, architecture design, prototype implementation, evaluation, iterative refinement, and the nature of roles played by participants. The literature review examines the areas of meeting analysis, hypertext, the Web, GSS, distributed GSS, collaborative interface design, group facilitation and systems engineering. The systems development research method is applied according to the following stages: Conceptual Framework Development, Requirements Identification, Systems Architecture Development, Systems Design, Systems Implementation and Systems Evaluation. An evolutionary prototyping approach incorporates evaluator suggestions and evolving technology into the system. Systems requirements are derived from the literature review, interviews with dozens of GSS researchers, practitioners and developers and hundreds of users from around the world. The initial specification employs the data model and interface design of an existing face-to-face GSS. A Distributed GSS architecture, consisting of a Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)/JavaScript client interface and a centralized HyperText Transport Protocol (HTTP)/Common Graphical Interface (CGI) server, is proposed, designed, and implemented. The logical data model is extended for distributed collaboration through identification of relevant data entities and relationships. The interface is extended through iterative prototyping based on observations, user feedback and technical enhancements. Prototype systems functionality is extended based on lab and field observations and direct feedback from users. Research contributions include a new distributed architecture, knowledge about distributed GSS interfaces, functionality, facilitation, leadership and participation, a prototype for additional research, and knowledge about the processes and group dynamics for distributed teams.

Abstract:
Information System (IS) effectiveness assessment is an important issue for the organizations as IS have become critical for their survival. With the incorporation of Internet technologies into the business environment, it is now more difficult to measure IS effectiveness, because Internet provides a borderless, non-stop, flexible communication medium. Assessing the effectiveness of web-based information systems (WIS) is vital for survival and competitive advantage which is a complicated subject since there are several interacting factors to consider. In the literature there are several methods proposed for IS assessment. However, those studies have been far from providing a broad, comprehensive evaluation framework for any type of web-based IS independent of its domain. In this study, a generic WIS effectiveness assessment framework is proposed. The framework is applied in case studies consisting of four organizations in e-commerce and e-banking domains.

Abstract:
Today, infectious animal diseases and the propagation speeds of these diseaseshave been threatening the human health. Threats from animal disease outbreakssuch as Avian Influenza have increased in both number and complexity. So, it is extremely important to determine the animal diseases at first appearances and totake precautions according to propagation speeds of the diseases. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become an important tool inveterinary epidemiology, surveillance and monitoring of animal diseases. Such approaches can be used for public health planning and predicting disease risks. This study aims to build a GIS web-based animal health surveillance system in Turkey in order to monitor and analyse disease outbreaks. Different sources of data
geographical data, animal holding locations, disease outbreak recordings, reporting information and special GIS functions have been incorporated in the application. It enables to determine the first, second and third degree risk zones of a disease, query the animals, holdings and disease events, create thematic maps and show the results of explored landscape features associated with Avian Influenza outbreak of 2006 and present graphically illustrated reports. This study will make the management of the disease outbreak situation easier, enhance the response mechanism of the decision makers, help to make better decisions, control the disease as quickly as possible, protect both the animals and humans against diseases, also provide a tool to evaluate different strategies to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. So, in an infectious disease case, emergency precautions can be taken and control strategies can be planned.

Abstract:
The greatest wealth is health. It is sometimes said your health is a function of what you are not doing, not what you are currently doing. The degree to which individuals can attain, process, and comprehend the necessary health information and services they need to make proper health decisions is vital for optimal health and well-being. This project documents the analysis, design, development, and implementation of a prototype web-based data-driven health & wellness system targeted for college students. The architecture for this system uses business intelligence to develop a smart online platform for real-time analysis based on inputs entered by its users. The objective is to develop modules that can be used to provide meal plan options that dietitians can recommend to students, while also providing a standard wellness health check. This also promotes constant awareness for students with specialized health diets. User-health and wellness history of each Student is collected and stored for generating progress and wellness reports for end users. The dietitian can monitor the user in real time through the data collected and stored in the data server. Users can monitor their own progress. The system incorporates user context and feedback to personalize each user's lifestyle. Implementation of this system provides a complete and easy to use integrated system that promotes the process of analyzing wellness and improving the user’s overall health. The system is designed to be in a non-clinical setting and hence more lifestyle-oriented compared to other health-oriented systems. It is thus more relevant and convenient to student’s everyday life context.

Abstract:
We have inorganically increased the use of web applications to the point of using them for almost everything and making them an essential part of our everyday lives. As a result, the enhancement of privacy and security policies for the web applications is becoming increasingly essential. The importance and stateless nature of the web infrastructure made the web a preferred target of attacks. The current web access control system is a reason behind the victory of attacks. The current web consists of two major components, the browser and the server, where the effective access control system needs to be implemented. In terms of an access control system, the current web has adopted the inadequate same origin policy and same session policy for the browser and server, respectively. The current web access control system policies are sufficient for the earlier day's web, which became inadequate to address the protection needs of today's web. In order to protect the web application from un-trusted contents, we provide an enhanced browser based access control system by enabling the dynamic scoping. Our security model for the browser will allow the client and trusted web application contents to share a common library and protect web contents from each other, while they still get executed at different trust levels. We have implemented a working model of an enhanced browser based access control system in Java, under the Lobo browser.

Abstract:
As tourism has become one of the most promising industries in the world, tourism information management systems have become increasingly popular. People are more and more dependent on such systems nowadays. The systems themselves have evolved, from being systems in which the users can only accept information passively, to systems which aim to integrate the users as an important part of the system. The users can be information providers as well, i.e. share what they have learned from their travel. The aim is to build an open, unified standard, and a well-functioning platform for all users. This project follows the software development process, i.e. requirement collection, system design, detailed design, database design and finally implementation and testing. The UML language is used to model the system, and for analysis of the functional and the non-functional requirements. Moreover, the project uses the .NET framework, C# language and the SQL Server 2005 DBMS to implement the web based tourisminformation management system. The system includes an information sharing platform, which allows sharing of user experiences for all users. In addition, the system employs a two-dimensional user management model, which allows not only authority management but also management of the scope of the user's authority.

With the overwhelming amount of biomedical textual information being produced, several manual curation efforts have been set up to extract and store concepts and their relationships into structured resources. Since manual annotation is a very demanding and expensive task, computerized solutions were developed to perform such tasks automatically. Nevertheless, high-end information extraction techniques are still not widely used by biomedical research communities, mainly due to the lack of standards and limitations in usability. Interactive annotation tools intend to fill this gap, taking advantage of automatic techniques and existing knowledge bases to assist expert curators in their daily tasks. This thesis presents Egas, a web-based platform for biomedical text mining and assisted curation with highly usable interfaces for manual and automatic inline annotation of concepts and relations. Furthermore, a comprehensive set of knowledge bases are integrated and indexed to provide straightforward concept normalization features. Additionally, curators can also rely on real-time collaboration and conversation functionalities allowing discussing details of the annotation task as well as providing instant feedback of curators interactions. Egas also provides interfaces for on-demand management of the annotation task settings and guidelines, and supports standard formats and literature services to import and export documents. By taking advantage of Egas, we participated in the BioCreative IV interactive annotation task, targeting the assisted identification of protein-protein interactions described in PubMed abstracts related to neuropathological disorders. Thereby, when evaluated by expert curators, Egas obtained very positive scores in terms of usability, reliability and performance. These results, together with the provided innovative features, place Egas as a state-of-the-art solution for fast and accurate curation of information, facilitating the task of creating and updating knowledge bases in a more consistent way.

Abstract:
The significant increase in amount of information readily available on the World Wide Web (WWW) makes it difficult for users to locate the information they desire in a timely manner. Modern information gathering and retrieval methods focus on simplifying this task by enabling the user to retrieve only a small subset of information that is more relevant and manageable. However, often the majority of users will not find an immediate use for the information. Therefore, it is necessary to provide a method to store it effectively so it can be utilised as a future knowledge resource. A commonly adopted approach is to classify the retrieved information based on its content. A technique that has been found to be suitable for this purpose is Multiple Classification Ripple Down Rules (MCRDR). MCRDR constructs a classification knowledge base over time using an incremental learning process. This incremental method of acquiring classification knowledge suits the nature of Web information because it is constantly evolving and being updated. However, despite this advantage, the classification knowledge of MCRDR is not often utilised for browsing the classified information. This is because MCRDR does not directly organise the knowledge in a way that is suitable for browsing. As a result, often an alternate structure is utilised for browsing the information which is usually based on a user's abstract understanding of the information domain. This study investigated the feasibility of utilising the classification knowledge acquired through the use of MCRDR as a resource for browsing information retrieved from the WWW. A system was implemented that used the concept lattice based browsing scheme of Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) to support the browsing of documents based on MCRDR classification knowledge. The feasibility of utilising classification knowledge as a resource for browsing documents was evaluated statistically. This was achieved by comparing the concept lattice-based browsing approach to a standard one that utilises abstract knowledge of a domain as a resource for browsing the same documents.

Abstract:
There is a body of evidence indicating that the implementation of current Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry business models and practices have caused negative impacts on global energy supply, ecosystems, and local or regional economies. In order to eliminate such negative impacts, AEC practitioners are seeking new business models in which the Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology can be considered an important technology driver. Despite the fact that the majority of AEC practitioners have used BIM tools for construction-level modeling purposes, some early adopters of BIM technology began to use BIM tools to better inform their design decisions. Corresponding to the increasing demand for decision support functionality, a number of studies showed that a part of BIM technology will be developed toward decision support and artificial intelligence domains. The use of computer-based systems to support decision making processes can usually be found in the business management field. In this field, decision support and business intelligence systems are widely used for improving the quality of managerial decisions. Because of its theories and principles, Decision Support Systems (DSS) can be considered as one of the potential information technologies that can be applied to enhance the quality of design decisions. The DSS also has the potential to be constructed as a system platform for implementing building information contained in BIM models associated with other databases, analytical models, and expert knowledge used by AEC practitioners. This study explores an opportunity to extend the capability of BIM technology toward the decision support and artificial intelligence domains by applying the theories and principles of DSS. This research comprises the development of a prototype BIM interoperable web-based DSS for vegetated roofing system selection. The prototype development can be considered a part of an ongoing research agenda focusing on the development of the integrated web-based DSS for holistic building design conducted within the College of Architecture and Urban Studies (CAUS), Virginia Tech. Through a post-use interview study, the developed prototype is used as a tool for evaluating the possibility for the DSS development and the usefulness of DSS in improving the quality of vegetated roofing system design decisions. The understanding gained from the post-use study is used to create a guideline for developing a fully functional DSS for holistic building design that will be developed in the future.

Abstract:
This research investigates the feasibility of web technology as a means of delivering facility information for better support of facility operations and maintenance. This study proposes a web-based feedback system as a pragmatic solution to the limitations of current facility management (FM) processes, increasing the efficiency of these processes via web technology. In practice, work orders and records are often misplaced, resulting in reduced efficiencies, redundancies, and time-consuming, costly tasks. This problem may be overcome by use of a system that stores information digitally and provides a web-based interface. The interface could allow operations personnel to create documentation, share and monitor work orders, provide feedback for service online, and facilitate communication between facility teams. The benefit for a FM department is that it can receive feedback on performance, which would improve the quality of service and build a record of practical experiences. In this research, the software was tested using two types of prototype testing: first, system testing to evaluate functionality, usability and capability; and second, a post-task questionnaire survey was conducted to test and review the concept, interface, and usability of the system. Facility Management Industry Advisor Council (FMIAC) members answered the questionnaires after using the system posted on the web. By using web-based feedback system, a facility web site can be created and maintained easily through a standard web browser. The questionnaires from the FMIAC members were analyzed to test research questions. The tests show that the software aids facilities managers in maintaining living documents of their facilities.

We present a network management information system which is designed with JAVA, which is an object-oriented computer programming language. With our system, network managers can easily manage their network systems through a web browser. For either network managers or ordinary users , there is no need to worry about the problem of platform. Since JAVA is platform independent, we can execute our program on any machine. To strengthen the system''s abilities, it can be incorporated with the technique of Data Mining. With the technique of Data Mining, we can survey deeper the data which we collected, and extract more valuable information. This data might be used for planning and decision-making of Network Management Policies. Furthermore, it can be used to prevent crimes and decrease illegal or pornography web sites. Our system is modularized and flexible. Users can add-on or remove any of its functions depending on their exact application. Each function in our system is an object, and all of them are reusable. We implement Simple Network Management Protocol and make it as the communication protocol among the network we managed. This protocol has become the standard of the network. All the network device support it. Our system has been deployed on managing our campus network system.

With the changes of the business environment, the consumers’ conscious of their rights and interests are gradually raised in the recent years. As a result, it is important for the modern companies to provide the best service in good time to the existing and potential customers. This research adapt Gartner Group’s planning model of customer services to helps the enterprises to set up the infrastructure of customer services on the web. The original Gartner Group’s planning model does not include knowledge database. This thesis integrates the knowledge database system into the planning model such that the enterprise can offer quality customer service by successfully achieve Knowledge Management, professional techniques accumulation and internal experiences inheritance. The approach of this research is to apply Object-Oriented technique of Unified Modeling Language(UML) to perform three main stages of development procedure, including system analysis, system structural design and component design. All three stages have corresponded UML diagrams. In addition, techniques of 3-tier architecture, workflow, intelligent agent, Role-Based Access Control(RBAC), knowledge base are integrated with ERP to develop a Web-based Service Information System. The result of this research is to design and implement a Web-based Service Information System. Under the group collaboration environment, this system provides a solution of workflow automation in the Web. Furthermore, its two sub-systems, Problem Tracking Record(PTR) and Return Merchandize Authorization(RMA), enable 24-hours of global customer services over the Internet. Hence, the enterprise can rapidly expand its marketplace and product service all over the world wherever reachable by the Internet. Recently Web-Based Information Systems (WBIS) are getting significant interests among business process practitioners. More and more web site development methods are proposed, but most of them focus on kiosk-type to navigate users to desired information. However, a WBIS not only disseminates information, but also needs to process business data, and communicate and collaborate with colleagues. For this purpose, we propose a systematic approach to designing the web-based information system. Our goal is to efficiently develop web-based applications that are best suited from user perspective. Our method starts from goal-driven use case, uses the object-class diagram for the static aspects, and adopts scenarios for the dynamic aspects. The object class diagram provides a basis for relating these web resources. The scenario analysis defines how web resources are accessed, used, and changed. By using the information provided in the previous stage, a navigational model is constructed and transformed into a web-based markup language description. Here, we choose an automatic way to generate the web system from the description produced in the transformation stage. A web-based Journal Submitted/assignment management system is used as illustrative an example to demonstrate our approach.

Abstract:
The Web is apparently an ideal source of answers to a large variety of questions, due to the tremendous amount of information available online. This paper describes a Web-based question answering system LAMP, which is publicly accessible. A particular characteristic of this system is that it only takes advantage of the snippets in the search results returned by a search engine like Google. We think such “snippet-tolerant” property is important for an online question answering system to be practical, because it is time-consuming to download and analyze the original web documents. The performance of LAMP is comparable to the best state-of-the-art question answering systems.
