The aim of this thesis project was to migrate an existing excel-based application, used

to analyze energy use and carbon dioxide emission of companies, to a web-based application.

Special development questions were put around which software development process,

solution stack and user interface to be used according to the company needs. The spiral

lifecycle model has been chosen because it provides a clear view of the process and has the

concept of early prototypes. A solution stack based on Linux, Apache, PHP and MySQL has

been chosen because such approach has met the company requirements in terms of cost,

security, support, and maintenance. As a result, the developed web-based system overcomes

the problems normally found in excel-based applications, such as application deployment and

maintenance, and provides a more usable and richer user interface.

Abstract:
The emergence of what we call today the World Wide Web, the WWW, or simply the Web, dates back to 1989 when Tim Berners-Lee proposed a hypertext system to manage information overload at CERN, Switzerland (Berners-Lee, 1989). This article outlines how his approaches evolved into the Web that drives today’s information society and explores its full potentials still ahead. The formerly known wide-area hypertext information retrieval initiative quickly gained momentum due to the fast adoption of graphical browser programs and standardization activities of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). In the beginning, based only on the standards of HTML, HTTP, and URL, the sites provided by the Web were static, meaning the information stayed unchanged until the original publisher decided for an update. For a long time, the WWW, today referred to as Web 1.0, was understood as a technical mean to publish information to a vast audience across time and space. Data was kept locally and Web sites were only occasionally updated by uploading files from the client to the Web server. Application software was limited to local desktops and operated only on local data. With the advent of dynamic concepts on server-side (script languages like hypertext preprocessor (PHP) or Perl and Web applications with JSP or ASP) and client-side (e.g., JavaScript), the WWW became more dynamic. Server-side content management systems (CMS) allowed editing Web sites via the browser during run-time. These systems interact with multiple users through PHP-interfaces that push information into server-side databases (e.g., mySQL) which again feed Web sites with content. Thus, the Web became accessible and editable not only for programmers and “techies” but also for the common user. Yet, technological limitations such as slow Internet connections, consumer-unfriendly Internet rates, and poor multimedia support still inhibited a mass-usage of the Web. It needed broad-band Internet access, flat rates, and digitalized media processing to catch on.

The policy of education for all has increased students' numbers in both public and private universities. Applicants seeking admission in universities have increased, and many universities have come up to tap the large numbers. Efforts have been made to give access to applicants for university education. However, applicants still find problems for applying due to absence of online application systems. This implies that universities have to adopt online application systems to enhance their admissions to graduate programs. The purpose of the chapter is to present a developed online application system for supporting admission at Kampala University (KU). This chapter also presents the weaknesses of the existing application system at KU to applicants and developed an online application system designed using HTML, PHP, CSS, Zend Engine, MySQL, SQL, and JS. Thus, KU should implement the online application system and provide clear guidelines to applicants on how to use the system.

Abstract:
This chapter introduces the method to assess similarity based on Facebook Graph API and user movements. All movements of users are collected and analyzed. The chapter presents an additional method for analyzing user-generated images on Instagram Graph API. The chapter presents a two-step multiparameter algorithm that generates recommendations based on user social activity and movements. A flexible mechanism for the calculations of time that one spends on a variety of social activities to more accurately identify the relationships between users is presented. To reduce the load on the application, the algorithms of data analysis and transfer optimization are proposed. The ultimate result of the study is to build a platform based on the “client-server” model and includes a mobile app on the iOS platform and server, which would be set up on the “LAMP” platform (L - Linux operating system, A - Apache web server, M - MySQL database, P - PHP programming language). The given result can be used and applied in various spheres of our lives to identify different relationships between people.

Abstract:
In the 21st century, the ability of citizens to participate in online democracy is a key issue for governments in the developing nations because of its attendant benefits. Information and Communications Technology (ICT) facilities support the establishment of electronic interaction between citizens and the various organs of government. Towards this, a variety of efforts have been made, and many systems have been developed, but few attempts have been made to combine more than one mode of access for e-Democracy system. It is difficult for people with visual impairment to be involved in issues of governance and communicate with government representatives such as public office holders. For these people, having access to an electronic means of communicating with these representatives is necessary as a way of enhancing participatory democracy among the citizens. In this chapter, the authors propose an access method for e-Democracy system using Multimodal SMS, Voice and Web (Multi-SVW) system. The system was implemented using VoiceXML and PHP for the user interfaces and MySQL as the database. The system was evaluated using cognitive walkthrough strategy. The results of the usability evaluation suggest that the prototype Multi-SVW application presented in this chapter has “good usability” based on the total mean rating. The system provides accessibility options to citizens who are able-bodied and citizens who are blind or vision impaired as a way of promoting digital citizenship.

Abstract:
The free or open source software (OSS) movement, pioneered by Richard Stallman in 1983, is gaining mainstream acceptance and challenging the established order of the commercial software world. The movement is taking root in various aspects of software development, namely operating systems (Linux), Web servers (Apache), databases (MySQL), and scripting languages (PHP) to mention but a few. The basic tenet of the movement is that the underlying code of any open source software should be freely viewable, modifiable, or redistributable by any interested party, as enunciated under the copyleft concept (Stallman, 2002) This is in sharp contrast to the proprietary software (closed source), in which the code is controlled under the copyright laws. In the contemporary software landscape, the open source movement can no longer be overlooked by any major players in the industry, as the movement portends a paradigm shift and is forcing a major rethinking of strategy in the software business. For instance, companies like Oracle, Microsoft, and IBM now offer the lightweight versions of their proprietary flagship products to small—to-medium businesses at no cost for product trial (Samuelson, 2006). These developments are signs of the success of the OSS movement. Reasons abound for the success of the OSS, viz. the collective effort of many volunteer programmers, flexible and quick release rate, code availability, and security. On the other hand, one of the main disadvantages of OSS is the limited technical support, as it may be difficult to find an expert to help an organization with system setup or maintenance. Due to the extensive nature of OSS, this article will only focus on the database aspects. A database is one of the critical components of the application stack for an organization or a business. Increasingly, open-source databases (OSDBs) such as MYSQL, PostgreSQL, MaxDB, Firebird, and Ingress are coming up against the big three commercial proprietary databases: Oracle, SQL server, and IBM DB (McKendrick, 2006; Paulson, 2004; Shankland, 2004). Big companies like Yahoo and Dell are now embracing OSDBs for enterprise-wide applications. According to the Independent Oracle Users Group (IOUG) survey, 37% of enterprise database sites are running at least one of the major brands of open source databases (McKendrik, 2006). The survey further finds that the OSDBs are mostly used for single function systems, followed by custom home-grown applications and Web sites. But critics maintain that these OSDBs are used for nonmission critical purposes, because IT organizations still have concerns about support, security, and management tools (Harris, 2004; Zhao & Elbaum, 2003)

Abstract:
The advancement of technologies of information and communication has motivated the development of the most different and innovative manners of propagating knowledge through the Web. The teaching-learning process must be designed in such a way as to allow a perfect integration between technological tools and learning actions used in education. In this work, we have developed a statistics calculator for webpage with the purpose of performing the descriptive analysis of database. The web programming language used to develop this calculator was PHP together with other web languages, such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript. This web application is going to be an important tool to help both our undergraduate and graduate students as professors in their statistics lectures or in the data analysis of their research projects. The descriptive analysis is the initial part of the data analysis used to describe, organize and summarize the collected data (Larson & Farber, 2003). Before performing the descriptive analysis is necessary to classify variables as qualitative and quantitative. In our case, we are interested in calculating the measures of location and the measures of dispersion of the quantitative variables. The measures of location calculated are minimum, maximum, mode, mean, and percentiles. The measures of dispersion calculated are range, interquartile range, variance, standard deviation and coefficient of variation. In the main window page of the statistics calculator, the sequence of data should be typed manually or imported from a text file (txt extension). Therefore, it is possible that the web application calculates the measures of position and the measure of dispersion of this database. These results are displayed in html format and the print of this content can be also requested. A test of the white-box type (Pressman, 2010) was done to validate the source code of the web application in order to evaluate its internal structures and to repair some found semantic errors.

Abstract:
Abstract This research addresses the problems associated with hydrocarbon accounting reconciliation and allocation from the production facility to the export terminal. This paper further discusses the security of the hydrocarbon accounting database and the overall automation of the production value chain, providing transparency to the joint venture partners involved in the crude oil export agreement to avoid revenue loss. It also provides a system that is not prone to malware or data alteration and promotes hydrocarbon allocation among the injectors, production data management and production data security. The existing system mostly in the sub-saharan Africa lacks trust and greater transparency. A new technology will be devolped using Blockchain Hyperledger which is a distributed ledger technology. For the purpose of this research Javascript, PHP, MySQL on Apache virtual machine was used to design and simulate the blockchain network. The web interface of the system was tested using katalon web test framework using Agile methodology. The system will have to integrate with the Lease Automation Custody Transfer (LACT) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), A LACT-SCADANode synchronized system will be implemented in the custody transfer point in the export pipeline, so all the oil and gas Exploration and Production (E&Ps) companies injecting crude oil can view what each company in the network injected and also the quantity that got to the export terminal daily. This will be achieved by having all the custody transfer nodes of the E&Ps and export terminal node in a network of consensus. Production data will be distributed at strategic points during the transportation among the nodes uniformly at the same time, making it impossible for cyber-invasion on all the nodes at the same time. The outcome of this research will achieve an advanced secured transparent system to store production data for accurate hydrocarbon allocation, in which the consensus attribute of the implemented blockchain technology will give each node autonomy. Hence, making the production data highly reliable and reconciliation will be achieved at real-time. This innovation further presents a new knowledge in the application of mechatronics engineering to the oil and gas sector, with its multidisciplinary focus on electronics, mechanical and computer systems. It is the integration of a software system to a LACT and sensors on the crude oil pipelines to acquire data, compute in a Hyperledger fabric network and display at real-time for hydrocarbon allocation settlement
