Abstract:
The path from science text to science television show is a rocky one. The fragmentation of the television market place with the growth of cable television has pushed science documentaries into a headlong pursuit for higher viewer ratings in a medium dominated by works of fiction. In response to this, science documentary has steadily been pushed to alter the techniques it uses, and adapt its content to become more dramatic. Varying market pressures have led to the rise of two dominant methods of dramatization; narrative imposition and visual spectacle (typically CGI). However, in addition to making science shows more dramatic these two techniques have acted to create a hybridized format, blending subjective speculation with traditional expositional documentary techniques. The result of such hybridization has been to blur the lines between fact and fiction and to allow for the creation of dubious subjunctive documentaries, and almost entirely fictive narrative documentaries. This has acted to uphold the cultural practice of misinterpreting science in order to support fantasy and fiction, and has led to a rise in pseudoscience, which could be potentially very damaging to society. The growth in the public misinterpretation of science could leave our societies woefully unprepared to make informed decisions about the future. To avoid this, I suggest that we find ways to adapt science for television that are more accurate in showing the true nature of science. Instead of bending science to conform to preconceived, linear dramatic narratives, I suggest we look at alternative narratives such as those seen in discursive \'essay\' films. And, instead of stretching spectacle and visualization so far as to create fantastical dramatic fictional worlds, I believe we should focus on creating shows that use metaphor and analogy to help us visualize the real, hidden nature of science. By utilizing scientists as guides and peers rather than as heroes and elitists, by choosing discourse over teleology, and by incorporating visually rich metaphors and analogies into science shows, we can render the strange and unfamiliar understandable and engaging.

Abstract : This comparative study focuses on the politics of gender representation through subversion in the characterization of Doctor Watson in its adaptation from 19th century literature to 21st century television. The interest of this study lies on the celebrated stories of Mr. Holmes and Dr. Watson, more specifically, on the latter. Many studies have analyzed Sherlock Holmes, but few have focused on his less famous companion, and even less have investigated Watson?s recent adaptation to television in which the character is portrayed as a woman. With the objective of investigating whether this character has a politically subversive role, I bring the hypotextual character to analysis in order to compare and contrast it to its hypertextual televisual version. On the literary scope, I analyze John H. Watson mainly through the novel The Hound of Baskervilles (1901-1902) by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and on the televisual scope, I examine the only female version of Dr. Watson ever portrayed, Joan Watson, via three episodes of the series Elementary (2012-) created by producer Robert Doherty. Since the present time still requires discussion about women?s rights, in turning this lead character and story narrator into a woman, the main question that has instigated my academic curiosity was whether this gender swap could represent a political impact in the postmodern era in which it is inserted. In pursuance of this answer, I utilize, among others, Raymond William (1973)?s notion of alternative-hegemony, Ella Shohat and Robert Stam (2014)?s considerations about politics of representation, and Mimi White (1992)?s discussion of ideology in television. This thesis demonstrates that while the literary character is very representative of his Victorian era, the televisual character challenges gender hegemonic notions of her postmodern era, thus representing an alternative to the 21st century dominant ideological system of gender.

Abstract:

This creative research explores connections between the fields of scientific research, weapons proliferation and ceramic art making. My work consists of a twisted world of these themes seen and told through childhood imagery and subjects. The juxtaposition of violence and destruction against innocence and playfulness and the cyclical way that I engage both intuitively and through calculation with my artwork are vital in impressing a notion of conflict’s early presence and danger in our lives. The overlap of weapons, chemistry and art is embodied in the relationships of the characters within these compositions and their iconographic meanings. This amalgamation is constructed through installations, sculptures and miniature models employing numerous kinds of ceramic and non-ceramic materials such as metal, wood, plastics and glass.

These works present conflict as similar to chemistry - omnipresent and unavoidable. The truths explored here feature a convoluted personal narrative, where family portraiture is seen through the lenses of our scientists and the imaginations of our children. Within the microcosmic worlds that the characters and environments in this work construct, the viewer is presented with simultaneous situations of destruction and unity. It is my intent through this imagery to lead my audience towards a greater appreciation of multiple views and non-binary biases.

By a Galton-Watson tree T we mean an infinite rooted tree that starts with one node and where each node has a random number of children independently of the rest of the tree. In the first chapter of this thesis, we prove a conjecture made in [7] for Galton-Watson trees where vertices have bounded number of children not equal to 1. The conjecture states that the electric conductance of such a tree has a continuous distribution. In the second chapter, we study rays in Galton-Watson trees. We establish what concentration of vertices with is given number of children is possible along a ray in a typical tree. We also gauge the size of the collection of all rays with given concentrations of vertices of given degrees.

Abstract:
Cloud services are one of the fast expanding fields of today. Companies such as Amazon, Google, Microsoft and IBM offer these cloud services in various forms. As this field progresses, the natural question occurs ”What can you do with the technology today?”. The technology offers scalability for hardware usage and user demands, that is attractive to developers and companies. This thesis tries to examine the applicability of cloud services, by combining it with the question: ”Is it possible to make an automated thesis examiner?” By narrowing down the services to IBM Watson web services, this thesis main question reads ”Is it possible to make an automated thesis examiner using IBM Watson?”. Hence the goal of this thesis was to create an automated thesis examiner. The project used a modified version of Bunge’s technological research method. Where amongst the first steps, a definition of an software thesis examiner for student theses was created. Then an empirical study of the Watson services, that seemed relevant from the literature study, proceeded. These empirical studies allowed a deeper understanding about the services’ practices and boundaries. From these implications and the definition of a software thesis examiner for student theses, an idea of how to build and implement an automated thesis examiner was created. Most of IBM Watson’s services were thoroughly evaluated, except for the service Machine Learning, that should have been studied further if the time resources would not have been depleted. This project found the Watson web services useful in many cases but did not find a service that was well suited for thesis examination. Although the goal was not reached, this thesis researched the Watson web services and can be used to improve understanding of its applicability, and for future implementations that face the provided definition.

ABSTRACT: This Master's thesis investigates one particular aspect of sexuality in colonial Anglo America--the products of non-marital intercourse. Earlier historical research emphasized the importance of economic considerations in the creation of bastardy laws and the prosecution and punishment for violators of these statutes. Undoubtedly, financial anxieties were a major concern in out-of-wedlock births, but they were only one concern of many. Class, race, and gender dynamics were prominent in colonists' conceptualization of illegitimacy and largely defined who was at risk for having an "insolent and contemptuous carriage" and the resulting punishment for the debauched act. Elite, white officials made women, servants, and Africans increasingly vulnerable to bastardy prosecution, thereby, marginalizing a large segment of the colonial populace.
ABSTRACT: Gendered relations, class biases, and racial inequities structured colonial society, and, therefore, merit consideration in a study of illegitimacy. This research aims to culturally describe and analyze bastardy within the context of the Chesapeake and New England regions. There is more to the study of colonial illegitimacy than economic concerns. Thus, applying cultural factors to a study on colonial bastardy further explores one of the many concerns that influenced colonists' understanding of illegitimacy.

Full text
Abstract:
Late twentieth-century debates on post-modernism have led to a new understanding of the variegated and contestatory nature of modernism, favourable to historical materialist analysis. W.B. Yeats is now seen as a paleo-modernist, using old forms in new ways, and as a pre-cursor of post-colonial writing. He was thus an enabling example for Dylan Thomas and Vernon Watkins as belated Welsh modernists. Chapter One examines the Swansea origins of Thomas and Watkins, their meeting, the help Watkins gave Thomas with the revision of Twenty-five Poems, and the consequences for the work of each Chapter Two details Watkins’s meeting with Yeats, and his enthusiasm for Yeats’s mature modernist work, and shows how Thomas’s early interest in the same work is seen in the Notebook poems. Chapter Three examines the influence of Yeats in Watkins’s poetry, with a detailed consideration of the Watkins collection after Yeats’s death whose long poems are read as a memorial work, and the process of dialogue between Thomas and Watkins as writers of ‘ballads’. Chapter Four considers Thomas’s strategic use of influences as an outsider poet, and uses local archive material to establish the politicisation of his modernism, and adoption of a ‘dialectical method’, thanks to Swansea Marxist Bert Trick. The chapter looks closely at the deliberate, complex and dignified allusions to Yeats in Thomas’s late poems. In conclusion the thesis examines Watkins’s emergence as a prose writer after Thomas’s death in 1953, and the poetry of grief and preoccupation with Thomas that continued until his own death in 1967. This thesis draws, for the first time, on the substantial holdings of Watkins papers at the National Library of Wales.

Abstract:
Benefits of testing automation according to current literature are reusability, repeatability and effort saved in test execution, while some of the current difficulties lie in maintainability, initial investment and test case creation. This thesis presents a brief literature review on the state of testing automation and a larger literature review on the use of Selenium and Watir in web context. Literature review on the use of Selenium and Watir contains an introduction to the history and use of the tools, as well as a look on the academic literature and blogosphere on the subject. The aim of this research is to identify differences on performance of configurations used by open source testing tools Selenium and Watir in web context. This thesis presents a quantitative controlled experiment measuring and comparing execution times, memory use and lines of code used by different testing configurations used by Selenium and Watir. Tools used are Watir and C#, Java, Python and Ruby bindings for Selenium. These tools are paired with browsers Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Opera for a total of 20 benchmarked configurations. Results of this study show that by selecting efficient pieces to the configuration in the form of tools, language bindings and web browsers, increased performance can be achieved as shorter execution times, less used memory and more concise code. Even for the purposes of cross-browser testing, the selection of tool affects the performance of testing configuration.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Globally, the debate regarding vaccinations in both healthcare and society is increasing. Each year, a new flu vaccine adapted for the virus that is believed to dominate during the season is also created. Nurses working in health care indirectly need to take a personal position on whether they want to vaccinate themselves or not against influenza. Aim: The aim was to describe nurse’s attitude towards being vaccinated against influenza.   Method: A qualitative method was used to describe the nurses' experiences regarding vaccination. The Cinahl complete and Medline with full text databases were used to find scientific articles as the basis for the literature review. A total of ten qualitative articles were analyzed to form themes in response to the purpose. Results: The result consists of five themes: influenza vaccine was perceived as less important, negative experiences of influenza vaccination, autonomy and the desire for more information. Discussion: The nurses had a negative attitude towards influenza vaccination and they stated their own knowledge about such vaccination as inadequate. In health care, it is important that nurses possess evidence-based knowledge in order to be able to educate patients regarding influenza and influenza vaccination. In accordance with Jean Watson's holistic description of the nurse's work, the nurse also has a moral responsibility to protect and guard the patient's safety against disease and spread of infection.

Abstract:
This psychobiography is focused on the life of Glenda Watson-Kahlenberg, whose life history epitomises the redemptive theme of triumph over tragedy. A phenomenological approach to the study allowed the researcher to observe the participant‟s lived experience through the theoretical lens of Frankl‟s conceptualization of a meaningful and full existence. A holistic perspective of factors contributing to redemption was accommodated by the Biopsychosocial-spiritual Model. The aim of this longitudinal revelatory study was to illuminate the process of redemption in a life, which leads to restoration and wholeness. This study breaks with traditional psychobiography – in that a life in progress has been selected; and personality development is not the key focus. This psychobiographical undertaking was anchored in qualitative research in the form of a single case study. Four types of triangulation were utilized, namely: data, investigators, theory and methodological triangulation. In addition, Alexander‟s identifiers of saliency, Miles and Huberman‟s data-management guidelines, Schultz‟s prototypical scenes, and Guba‟s criteria for trustworthiness, guided the methodology to ensure reliable data extraction and interpretation. The present researcher was in search of a deeper understanding of the enabling factors facilitating a restorative process in a life that was challenged by setbacks. Given the increasing pressures facing individuals in this modern era, the redemptive theme holds particular relevance, and was graphically demonstrated in the life of the participant who experienced trauma, widowhood, divorce, single parenthood, and a spate of medical and psychological setbacks. The findings suggest that the mental health clinician‟s utilisation of Frankl‟s conceptualisation of meaning in the most challenging circumstances, proffers itself as an all-purpose life-tool which enables individuals to overcome their challenges. The study demonstrated that gaining meaning in life is inextricably tied to an implicit legacy-oriented worldview. Of significance, is the role of forgiveness which emerged as the central redemptive catalyst. In this study, the resolution of past hurts through forgiveness, and the search for meaning, merge, forming an arterial theme in the life story of the participant. The dual impact of these factors not only reversed contaminated life-scripts, it also birthed a new calling in life which set the participant on a generative life course. The findings related to a redemptive life not only confirms existing theory, but also adds perspectives not previously considered. In addition, the findings related to the role of forgiveness has positive implications for the individual‟s physical and psychological wellbeing. Greater intentionality on the part of therapists to thread forgiveness into their practice, remains invitational in the light of the eugraphic impact demonstrated in this study.

Abstract:
In this work, we are interested in Growth of Galton-Watson trees under two different models: (1) Galton-Watson (GW) forests with lifetimes and/or immigrants, and (2) Galton-Watson forests with mutation, which we call Galton-Watson-Clone-Mutant forests, or GWCMforests. Under each model, we study certain consistent families (Fλ)λ≥0 of GW/GWCM forests and associated decompositions that include backbone decomposition as studied by many authors. Specifically, consistency here refers to the property that for each μ ≤ λ, the forest Fμ has the same distribution as the subforest of Fλ spanned by the blue leaves in a Bernoulli leaf colouring, where each leaf of Fλ is coloured in blue independently with probability μ/λ. In the first model, the case of exponentially distributed lifetimes and no immigration was studied by Duquesne and Winkel and related to the genealogy of Markovian continuous-state branching processes (CSBP). We characterise here such families in the framework of arbitrary lifetime distributions and immigration according to a renewal process, and show convergence to Sagitov’s (non-Markovian) generalisation of continuous-state branching renewal processes, and related processes with immigration. In the second model, we characterise such families in terms of certain bivariate CSBP with branching mechanisms studied previously by Watanabe and show associated convergence results. This is related to, but more general than Bertoin’s study of GWCM trees, and also ties in with work by Abraham and Delmas, who study directly some of the limiting processes.

Abstract:
This work is devoted to the study of scaling limits of different functionals of random walks on a Galton-Watson tree, potentially in random environment. The randow walk we consider is a null recurrent nearest-neigbout random walk, the probability transition of which depend on the environment. More precisely, we study the trace of the walk, that is the sub-tree made up of the vertices visited by the walk. We first consider the case where in a certain sense the environment has finite variance, and we show that when well-renormalised, the trace converges towards the Brownian forest. We then consider hypotheses of regular variation on the environement, and we show that the height function of the walk (that is the sequence of heights in the tree of the walk) converges towards the continuous time height process of a spectrally positive strictly stable Lévy process, and that the trace of the walk converges towards the real tree coded by this very process. The strategy used to prove these two results is based on the study of a certain kind of trees that we introduce in this thesis: they are Galton-Watson trees with two types, one of which being sterile, and with edge lengths. Our main result about these trees states that their height functions satisfies an invariance principle, similar to that verified by simple Galton-Watson trees. These trees also find a direct application in multitype Galton-Watson trees with infinitely many types, as an explicit link between these two kind of trees allow us to show that they satisfy also the same invariance principle

Abstract:
John Watson's thought has not been well understood. A question suggested by previous scholarship, namely, how successful was he at his task of re-founding the Christian religion on a philosophical base? is answered first in terms of consistency with the theological tradition. His revision of Christian theology is found to be inadequate by traditional standards; it is then examined as a philosophy of religion which, to his mind, overcame the difficulties of classical theism. It is argued that, despite some advantages, his philosophy of religion is deficient in two respects. First, its method is vitiated by a strained and sometimes mistaken interpretation of the philosophical tradition, indicative of arbitrariness. Second, "Speculative Idealism" as the result of that method reveals conceptual ambiguities corresponding to the ambiguities of classical theism. As the method is not self-evident and is used implicitly by Watson, and the results are philosophically ambiguous, the appropriation of this thought was theologically or philosophically shallow. Though Watson's thought, as far as it was understood, provided an underpinning for the "social gospel" movement in Canada, it is argued that this shallow appropriation explains, at least in part, the brevity of its appeal as philosophy of religion.

Koseoglu, Gamze. "Even Sherlock needs a Dr. Watson: A theory of creativity catalysts." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/53545.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation I seek to answer the research question of who are those people that have the ability and motivation to facilitate other people’s creative thinking. Actors who are in the creator’s social environment, such as her coworkers and family members, can potentially enhance the creator’s level of creativity. Although these contacts can be active collaborators of the creator’s thinking processes and can eventually have a significant impact on organizational creativity, so far their role in organizational life has been overlooked by researchers. Consequently, in my dissertation I develop a theory of “creativity catalysts”, and define a creativity catalyst as an employee who helps to improve the usefulness and novelty (i.e. creativity) of the ideas and products produced by another employee (i.e. the creator) through direct interpersonal interaction with the creator. I examine two aspects of serving as a catalyst to another’s creativity: the intensity of a creativity catalyst’s contribution and the span of a creativity catalyst’s contribution. Intensity of contribution is conceptualized as the extent to which the creativity catalyst can improve the output generated by the creators to be more novel and useful. Span on the other hand, is the number of people that perceive an individual as a catalyst for her own creative performance. To answer the research question, I develop and empirically test a theory of creativity catalysts by integrating a social capital theory lens (i.e. structural social capital and relational social capital) with a stable motivational orientation (i.e., learning goal orientation). First, I argue that a catalyst’s relational social capital (i.e., quality of relationships with her coworkers) in the organizational communication network determines her motivation to take the role of a creativity catalyst. Second, I argue that the catalyst’s structural social capital (i.e., the extent to which she can connect with the disconnected others in her network structure) underlines her ability to contribute to others’ creativity. Integrating these two arguments, I hypothesize that the catalyst’s relational social capital (i.e., the motivation to become a creativity catalyst) interacts with her structural social capital (i.e., the ability of a creativity catalyst) in predicting both the intensity and span of the catalyst’s contribution to her coworkers’ creativity. Second, I hypothesized that learning goal orientation, a stable motivational orientation, interacts with the situational motivational characteristic of relational social capital in predicting both the span and intensity of a catalyst’s contribution to her coworkers’ creativity. To test my hypotheses, I first ran a pilot study on a sample of full-time MBA students in order to validate the creativity catalyst measure; and then tested my hypothesized model on employees from two companies, using multiple data sources over multiple phases of data collection. Consequently, I found support for both of these interaction hypotheses on the intensity and span of a creativity catalyst’s contribution to her coworkers’ creativity. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings, and future research directions are discussed.

Paz, Franco. "On the Edge of Freedom: The Re-enslavement of Elizabeth Watson." ScholarWorks @ UVM, 2018. https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/graddis/905.

Full text
Abstract:
Elizabeth Watson was a Boston-born slave in Halifax, Nova Scotia. After a brutal assault at the hands of master-shipwright Elias Marshall, she petitioned the Halifax Inferior Court of Common Pleas. Watson won her freedom on 23 March 1778. Thirty-one days later, she was seized by Halifax butcher William Proud, who claimed Watson was his runaway slave known as Phillis. The ensuing trial is the object of this thesis, which will survey the historiography of slavery in the Maritime provinces, explore the development of slavery in New England and Nova Scotia, and provide an account of Watson v. Proud. Elizabeth Watson’s story is a departure from well-known narratives of African American freedom in Canada. Its telling complicates and nuances historical analyses of the black Atlantic world. Her actions raise important questions and convey potential answers. In petitioning the lower court, she revealed a keen understanding of the legal world she inhabited and her rights as a British subject. Watson’s story constitutes the earliest extant record of re-enslavement in the region. But she was also the first enslaved woman to seek possession of her freedom in a Maritime court of law. Elizabeth Watson oscillated from slavery to freedom and back to slavery in the space of thirty-one days. Tracing the genealogy of her unfreedom from Boston to Halifax brings both worlds into a fuller, more vivid light.

Abstract:
This thesis reads Kathleen Raine's retrospectively assembled representation of Edwin Muir, David Jones, David Gascoyne and Vernon Watkins in the light of the mode of' ...the learning of the Imagination' I, an alternative ca!l0n to Auden, Larkin etc., of which Raine is the high priest. Raine developed her canonical redress in her studies of William Blake and W.B.Yeats, which culminated in her establishing the Temenos Academy and the Temenos Academy Review. Raine is right. She is right at least that these pocts follow something ofthe same creed and practice and they do constitute an alternative to the more accepted canon of Auden, MacNeice, and Larkin. This is the main concern ofmy thesis. Whether Kathleen Raine is right in thinking that they should replace the established canon is for the reader to decide. I do not come to a decision, but the thesis may help to settle the matter. Chapters One, Two, Three and Four follow the lives of Edwin Muir, David Jones, David Gascoyne and Vernon Watkins, with individual readings of their poetry. adopting a Rainean approach, and also broader soundings in critical responses to their works both past and prcsent. The use of Platonic concepts and Christian patterning to anchor poetry is linked to Raine's critique of what constitutes the imaginative tradition, and her search for true poets perPetuating the tradition. Close consideration is given to the biographical context of each poet, and the conccpts and priorities expressed in the accompanying critical assessments of each poet. I argue then that Raine's assembling of the four poets is valid. She prompts us to appreciate a rich gathering in of conceptual, aesthetic and religious strands, a resonant binding ofthose poets isolated by plural specialisations.

Abstract:
Emergency preparedness typically involves the preparation of detailed plans that can be implemented in response to a variety of possible emergencies or disruptions to the transportation system. One shortcoming of past response plans was that they were based on only rudimentary traffic analysis or in many cases none at all. With the advances in traffic simulation during the last decade, it is now possible to model many traffic problems, such as emergency management, signal control and testing of Intelligent Transportation System technologies. These problems are difficult to solve using the traditional tools, which are based on analytical methods. Therefore, emergency preparedness planning can greatly benefit from the use of micro-simulation models to evaluate the impacts of natural and man-made incidents and assess the effectiveness of various responses. This simulation based study assessed hypothetical emergency preparedness plans and what geometric and/or operational improvements need to be done in response to emergency incidents. A detailed framework outlining the model building, calibration and validation of the model using microscopic traffic simulation model WATSim (academic version) is provided. The Roadway network data consists of geometric layout of the network, number of lanes, intersection description which include the turning bays, signal timings, phasing sequence, turning movement information etc. The network in and around the OIA region is coded into WATSim with 3 main signalized intersections, 180 nodes and 235 links. The travel demand data includes the vehicle counts in each link of the network and was modeled as percentage turning count movements. After the OIA network was coded into WATSim, the road network was calibrated and validated for the peak hour mostly obtained from ADT with 8% K factor by comparing the simulated and actual link counts at 15 different key locations in the network and visual verification done. Ranges of scenarios were tested that includes security checkpoint, route diversion incase of incident in or near the airport and increasing demand on the network. Travel time, maximum queue length and delay were used as measures of effectiveness and the results tabulated. This research demonstrates the potential benefits of using microscopic simulation models when developing emergency preparedness strategies. In all 4 main Events were modeled and analyzed. In Event 1, occurrence of 15 minutes traffic incident on a section of South Access road was simulated and its impact on the network operations was studied. The averaged travel time under the incident duration to Side A was more than doubled (29 minutes, more than a 100% increase) compared to the base case and similarly that of Side B two and a half times more (23 minutes, also more than a 100% increase). The overall network performance in terms of delay was found to be 231.09 sec/veh. and baseline 198.9 sec/veh. In Event 2, two cases with and without traffic diversions were assumed and evaluated under 15 minutes traffic incident modeled at the same link and spot as in Event 1. It was assumed that information about the traffic incident was disseminated upstream of the incident 2 minutes after the incident had occurred. This scenario study demonstrated that on the average, 17% (4 minutes) to 41% (12 minutes) per vehicle of travel time savings are achieved when real-time traffic information was provided to 26% percent of the drivers diverted. The overall network performance in delay for this event was also found to improve significantly (166.92 sec/veh). These findings led to the conclusion that investment in ITS technologies that support dissemination of traffic information (such as Changeable Message Signs, Highway Advisory Radio, etc) would provide a great advantage in traffic management under emergency situations and road diversion strategies. Event 3 simulated a Security Check point. It was observed that on the average, travel times to Sides A and B was 3 and 5 minutes more respectively compared to its baseline. Averaged queue length of 650 feet and 890 feet worst case was observed. Event 4 determined when and where the network breaks down when loaded. Among 10 sets of demand created, the network appeared to be breaking down at 30% increase based on the network-wide delay and at 15% based on Level of Service (LOS). The 90% increase appeared to have the most effect on the network with a total network-wide delay close to 620 seconds per vehicle which is 3 and a half times compared to the baseline. Conclusions and future scope were provided to ensure continued safe and efficient traffic operations inside and outside the Orlando International Airport region and to support efficient and informed decision making in the face of emergency situations.

Li, Qiao. "Using Watson perceptual model to improve quantization index modulation based watermarking schemes." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2007. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1443976/.

Full text
Abstract:
Quantization index modulation (QIM) is a popular watermarking scheme that has received considerable attention. Nevertheless, there are practical limitations of QIM. For example, traditional QIM uses a fixed quantization step size, which may lead to poor fidelity in some areas of the content. More serious problems of the original QIM algorithm include its extremely sensitivity to valumetric scaling (e.g., changes in amplitude) and re-quantization (e.g., JPEG compression). In this thesis, we first propose using Watson's perceptual model to adaptively select the quantization step size based on the calculated perceptual "slack". Experimental results on 1000 images indicate improvements in fidelity as well as improved robustness in high-noise regimes. Watson's perceptual model is then modified such that the slacks scale linearly with valumetric scaling, thereby providing a QIM algorithm that is theoretically invariant to valumetric scaling. In practice, the robustness against valumetric scaling is significantly improved, but scaling can still result in errors due to cropping and roundoff that are an indirect effect of scaling. Two new algorithms are proposed the first based on regular QIM and the second based on rational dither modulation. A comparison with other methods demonstrates improved performance over other recently proposed valumetric-invariant QIM algorithms, with only small degradations in fidelity. Spread transform dither modulation (STDM) is a form of QIM that is more robust to re-quantization. However, the robustness of STDM to JPEG compression is still poor and it remains very sensitive to valumetric scaling. We describe how a perceptual model can be incorporated into the STDM framework to (i) provide robustness to valumetric scaling, (ii) reduce the embedding-induced perceptual distortion and (iii) significantly improve the robustness to re-quantization.
